Sevilla Ch F: Roberto Carballes Baena [1] def. Daniel Altmaier [3] 6-3, 7-5 Match Stats
Tumblr media
📸 ATP official website
D. Altmaier had his fair chances as he tried to raise his game in the second set, where he noticeably hit more drop shots compared to the first set. However, it did not always work as R. Carballes Baena become more aggressive afterward, thus leaving the former little to no options as he capitalized from the third seed's errors. As a result, even if D. Altmaier created 8 break points, R. Carballes Baena optimized his chances by converting 57% of their break points.
Besides, it appeared that both players had their service game strengths throughout the match. R. Carballes Baena might have scored 2 aces than D. Altmaier's 1, but the former only scored 6% lesser first serve points than the third seed, with the latter winning 71% of his first serve points. On the other hand, D. Altmaier's second serves appeared more vulnerable with only a 37% winning percentage even if both players double-faulted once.
With this title, R. Carballes Baena successfully defended his Sevilla Challenger title that he won in 2022-23, irrespective of the clay color (yellow in 2022-23, red in 2024), winning his first Challenger title of the year. Besides, R. Carballes Baena stayed in the Top 100 range at 55 live by the end of this tournament, while D. Altmaier is now 84 live with his runner-up achievement. Staying in the Top 100, for sure.

Well one of the few good things about that match was the commentator when Andrey had his hands on his hips after missing a second serve return: "a double teapot from Rublev" 😂

Niedersachsen will gegensteuern
#Niedersachsen will gegensteuern.

Obviously Spirk and Mulder/Scully are iconic pairs, but I can't get over how low they were seeded (I'm not arguing with the data, or your awesome methods -- It's just wild).
I looked at some sports rankings and imagine if the US Open finals were Women's Tennis: Emma Navarro vs Yulia Putintseva
Men's Tennis: Daniel Altmaier vs Arthur Rinderknech
Or March Madness ended with a game between Missouri vs Kent St.
I love it!
Wangxian is the only one of the semifinalists that was seeded in the top 32! We knew going in that number of works on ao3 is a messy proxy at best for weight class in the actual polls, but it's been fascinating watching that play out in practice.

R. Carballes Baena originally had a strong start to the second set as his preceding forehand outhit D. Altmaier's forehand for the earlier break to 1-0 only to be broken back (1-1) thanks to the latter's functional drop shot paving the way before another drop shot and forehand pass finish securing his break point prior to the said break-back. Afterward, D. Altmaier survived some moments before holding his serves to 2-1.
Fast-forward to the eighth game, the German third seed had his fair moments as he produced his classic forehand pass to create 2 break points, both of which were saved for the Spanish first seed to massively hold to 4-3. It took several more games before D. Altmaier's double fault paved the way before R. Carballes Baena's working smash generated his break point, converting it right away to 6-5 afterward. As a result, R. Carballes Baena earned his chance to serve for the match, which he ultimately did as he fired an unreturned serve to take the second set 7-5, thus he successfully defended the title once again.
