In honor of me being nervous about tomorrow, I decided to read RT reviews of TLT and man… I hate the movie but some of these reviews piss me off, particularly ones that refer to it as a HP ripoff…

And then I remember they’re not talking about the books.

[Don't Starve/DST tips for beginner players]

1. CHARACTER CHOOSING

The character you play plays a big role in the game, as they're not just for aesthetic, each character has ups and downs and as a beginner you should choose the most neutral characters before you get a handle of the game. In singleplayer Don't Starve you can only unlock new characters with XP, but in DST you have all of them available to you, so choose wisely. Here's a small guide on each character:

Wilson: he's the starting character, so naturally he's the most neutral one. He doesn't really have pros or cons, he just grows a pretty cool beard.

Willow: the firestarter. She's my main so I have a lot to say. Willow is a good character, although her sanity is low she's very useful. In regular Don't Starve she spawns with a lighter, but in Don't Starve together she spawns with a lighter and Bernie, her bear. Willow's sanity goes up if she picks flowers, like normal players, but she also gets more sanity when she's around fire or when she burns things, so when her sanity is low you might want to leave base or not walk around forests because she can start a fire. The sanity gain with fire improves during the day. She's also really useful because in DST when she's insane she can put Bernie on the floor and he'll become a huge bear and fight monsters for her. This is all amazing but as I said she loves fire, so she hates cold, and winter is especially hard for her. She can freeze quicker and it's really annoying and it's hard to do anything that involves not being around warm fire, so if you're a new player I don't really recommend playing Willow at first because winter is already hard as it is. This being said, during summer she's also more resistant to heat strokes than other characters, and she also doesn't take fire damage unlike other characters.

Wolfgang: Wolfgang has great stats and he's really strong, but you have to be constantly feeding him or else he'll get weak. Also he's 'afraid of monsters', which means his sanity drains quicker than other characters when he's around hostile mobs.

Wendy: Wendy is someone I recommend to new players, because although her stats aren't the best, and although she doesn't hit very hard, she comes with Abigail. Abigail is her dead sister that you can spawn from the flower Wendy carries, and Abigail is useful because she can fight for you. Most mobs in Don't Starve use close range and with Abigail you can use long range which is very useful. Just make sure you don't get hit because Wendy's HP isn't the best.

WX78: it's a bit of a shit character if you ask me. Definitely don't play this one. When he gets hit by lighting he gets charged up and can be a light source + walk faster, but he only eats gears (which are hard to get on their own) and he gets rusty if it rains, I honestly don't like him.

Wickerbottom: I don't have much experience on her, she's really smart and she comes with an extra crafting tab that allows her to craft books which she can use to spawn stuff. It's useful but I don't have much insight on her.

Woodie: I play him a lot in DST, and he's really great overall. He comes with an axe (Lucy) that is infinite (it doesn't wear out like other axes) and he can chop trees down really quickly. However during full moon he can turn into a Goose (runs fast), into a Moose (attacks with force) or into a Beaver (can chop trees faster and without an axe), but when he comes back to being Woodie he will be hungry (hunger will be at 0) so you have to make sure you have food around.

Wes: garbage.

Maxwell: He can create shadows to fight for him, chop for him, etc... But for every shadow he permanently looses HP (which means that, for example, if his HP sits at 150 max, when he makes a shadow the max will be 120HP). It's useful but you have to be careful not to take any damage, and as a new player that might be hard.

Wigfrid: She's a great fighter, and she's able to craft a helmet (best protection in the game I believe, at least from the regular ones) and a spear which are exclusive to her. However she only eats meat and it can be a little hard for new players as carrots and berries are the easiest food to get.

Webber: he's recently had a rework so he has a couple new things. Webber is a spider, and he can now make them passive, wake them up, and put them to sleep, which is great to farm/harvest stuff. Webber isn't attacked by spiders like other players, but since pigmen are afraid of spiders they will hit Webber as well. Not a terrible character to start with either!

Warly: Warly comes with his own special crockpot and he is a great cook, which means that your hunger heals better when you eat something he made. The downside is that he can't eat anything he didn't make in his crockpot, which can make it a little hard.

Wormwood: I recently bought Hamlet (which is how you get this playable character or DST) and man, my thoughts are divided. He's a good character as he can plant seeds without needing to make crops, however he's extremely flammable (he can't stand too close to a fire), he looses sanity every time he chops a tree or picks a flower ('cause he's a plant and he doesn't like hurting his friends). Something really annoying about him is that he doesn't heal by eating food like other characters, he only heals with the spider glands or with manure (shit). So he's not an ideal character to start with. He does grow a cool flower on his head during spring though.

Winona: She's a really badass character and I really like her. She's a builder, so she can build things other characters can't (like catapults) so she's really effective when it comes to defending the base and helping out against mobs like hounds. However she does lose sanity any time she crafts anything, so it can be a little hard to deal with her.

Wortox: I don't know much about him, but he can teleport and he can also heal players with his magic. If you ask me he's a little overpowered for the game.

Wurt: I don't know much about him and I've never had anyone play him, all I know is that he doesn't get attacked by merman since he's one of them.

Walter: he's a little scout boy that comes with a slingshot and a dog. The dog can grow big and Walter can ride him which is good for fleeing, but after riding for a while the dog will throw him off.

Sorry for not having much on the last 3 but they're fairly recent compared to others and I haven't seen much of them or played them.

Most times during DST people choose characters that help others, so you can help each other and get the most out of the game.

2. SANITY

Sanity plays a big part in this game. You lose sanity by being in the dark, or by fighting mobs. Some characters have special ways of losing sanity, for example, Wormwood loses sanity by picking flowers or chopping trees. How do you fix your sanity? For all characters (except Wormwood) you can get sanity by picking flowers. With 12 flowers you can make a garland in the hat tab and it will slowly restore your sanity. You can also pick green mushrooms and cook them for more sanity. Just like some characters lose sanity in a 'special' way, some characters gain sanity in a special way as well, such as Woodie when he chops trees and Willow when she's near fire or when she sets anything on fire.

If you let your sanity go down you will start seeing shadows, those shadows become real if it goes down enough, and said shadows will start attacking you, which isn't great because they're a lot, so watch out for that.

3. SURVIVING WINTER

Winter is hands down my least favourite season because Im a Willow main :)

What happens during winter? It starts to snow, so players can freeze, deerclops might appear, crops stop growing. The biggest issue with the winter is that food is hard to find. Crops and berries don't grow anymore so what do you do? First of all you will need to find a clockwork before winter. What are clockworks? They're metal mobs that drop gears when you kill them. You need gears to make a fridge, so you can store a lot of food for winter. If you store food in a normal chest it will rot quickly, but in a fridge they last a long time. You should also build a crockpot which is fairly easy, and in a crockpot you can make better food, you can also take nearly rotten food and make it good by cooking it, and you can use 1 stick or 1 monster meat to make good food, as you can't normally eat monster meat 'cause it drains sanity and HP.

What can you do for the cold? You need to find beefalo, and with the shears (which you can craft in the tools) you shave the beefalo, so you can make a winter hat. That hat will help with the cold. You can also make earmuffs, by catching 2 live bunnies and sticks, but the hat isn't hard to make and it's better. MAKE SURE YOU CARRY ENOUGH TO MAKE A FIRE AT ALL TIMES. In case of emergency if you get cold and start dying you need to have something to warm you up. You should also make a thermal stone. It doesn't take a lot and it keeps you warm. (You use the thermal stone by setting it down near the fire and letting it geete warm)

You should also make bird and rabbit traps to get meat during the winter.

Beware of the deerclops, if it appears try to lure it away from your base because it can destroy everything you built. If you want to fight it, make sure you fight it away from your base, but if you don't you can also lure him somewhere else and then run away. The Deerclops will de-spawn after winter is over.

Try not to make your base near the sea 'cause penguins will spawn and they're very fucking annoying + they can destroy your shit.

4. SURVIVING SUMMER

Summer is also very fucking annoying but much less than winter.

What do you need?

Some crops survive, but some of them die, so getting food isn't as annoying to get, but it's still scarce, so you should also try to get as much food as you can during spring time.

You should get ice during winter from the glaciers, and also more gears. Some crops/trees/grass might start to burn during summer, and with gears and ice you can make an ice-fligomatic. The ice flingomatic will throw ice to things when they start burning and will extinguish the fire, so when you come back to your base it's not all in flames.

During the summer you can't stand near fire or you'll die of heatsroke. Remember Nitre? That yellow shit you leave behind after mining rocks because you need inventory space? Yeah you'll need those to build an endothermic fire. It lights up your nights and keeps you cold, however you can't cook in it.

The thermal stone from winter also works during the summer.

Keeping a bunch of ice from winter in your fridge also works. If you eat the ice it will make you colder.

RANDOM TIPS

1. Don't hit pigmen/beefalo when there's many around you. They will gather up and kill you.

2. DO NOT try to kill penguins. They might be easy to kill but not so much when they all gather around and kill you.

3. Always keep armor+spear on you in case hounds start to come and you're not at base.

4. Don't steal tall birds' eggs (blue with white dots). The tall bird is very strong and aggressive and it will follow you for the egg and try to kill you.

5. Don't eat the mushrooms unless 100% necessary. Mushrooms always have a side effect, like they might give you sanity but take HP.

6. You can use mushrooms and monster meat (which you shouldn't eat by themselves) and cook something in a crockpot, thus turning something inedible into something edible.

7. When it rains, more during the Spring than anything else, it might start raining frogs, it's not a bug, that happens. Try to get away from base so they don't swarm there, as they're very annoying.

8. ALWAYS build a lightning rod, during a storm the lightning can hit something and set it on fire, and you don't want your stuff being burned. The lightning rod collects the lightning and protects your base.

I finished Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance for the first time and wow, am I impressed. Having only played the 3DS era games and started Sacred Stones recently, I came to expect a certain range of quality and reach in terms of story. There are games that I found not overly complex but executed well (Echoes) and ones with a good premise and sloppy execution (Fates). Sacred Stones, so far, is one I find with a simple story done well. I’m not terribly enthralled with it, but there’s nothing there to annoy me either.

Path of Radiance is one of those games that takes the ‘simple/standard FE plot’ path, but the execution is brilliant, filled with both depth and heart despite the story having the same basic beats as many other FEs. I was really impressed with the worldbuilding, the character writing, the gameplay/story integration...

My biggest gripe with Awakening and Fates was that the characters were colorful, but few of them were compelling and many lacked the depth to take them beyond their archetypes. Path of Radiance did a good job making me feel that its characters all had a stake in the outcome of the battles, that they had an actual cause to fight for and didn’t just join the army just because. There is always a bit of contrivance in an FE game, but the quality of the writing can lessen or emphasize that feeling.

The gameplay mechanics change from game to game, and I find it really fun to test out the unique features of each installment and see how they influenced each other. the shoving animations are amazing

People also say this is one of the easiest FE games and I have to say, the bonus exp mechanic is probably why. I love this mechanic because of the way it allows the game to reward the player for taking certain actions encouraged by the story (like wanting to spare as many of the enemy as possible = we’ll give you bonus exp if you do). I, uh, am never doing a stealth run of the prison break chapter again though.

I went ultra vanilla and restricted myself to using only the Greil Mercenaries for this run, and I’ll leave my impressions on this post because half the fun of a FE game is building up your team.

I went with the Greil Mercenaries (+ Mia, because she joins them for the second game) for my first playthrough because otherwise I would have no reason to use both Rolf AND Shinon at the same time and Rhys would just warm the bench the whole game lol. And I was really curious to see Rolf and Shinon’s support line and actually have a use for all of those light magic tomes.

Ike: My Ike didn’t get screwed over in any stat, so absolutely no complaints other than the fact that he refused to proc Aether more than once in the Black Knight fight, making Nasir bail him out at the end of the allotted turns. I supported him with Soren because I wanted to see their support line, and have to say that it worked out really well. I was between Soren and Oscar, but it worked better this way because Oscar was always riding off with Titania at the front and Ike just lags behind unless you dedicate several units + Reyson to shoving him to the frontline. And when you’re using Mist, Rolf, and Soren, that really cuts into the units available for shoving.

Oscar: He, uh, ended up the MVP and netted the most kills in the run. Oscar can become an amazing paladin, but mine was so screwed in the strength stat for much of the early game that I had to abuse the bexp mechanic at the base to ensure he didn’t keep lagging behind. His defenses were super good by the end, and the little damage he did take was mitigated by activating Sol every other hit. Also, I have a bias for calvary units, so. Oscar. Loved him.

Titania: I...I love Titania. I love her character. She plays her role perfectly as the super strong unit who is there to support you in the beginning and falls off a little towards the end. She can still hold her own in the endgame, however, and I have no regrets for relying on her early on. There is so much experience to be had in normal mode that she doesn’t really rob anyone else of it unless you go ham and let her destroy everything. In the end, I gave her Savior so she can help deliver chip damage and save Shinon’s ass, I mean, rescue drop people.

Boyd: Super frustrating and nerve wracking to train, super hard hitter who still keeps you on your toes by the end. He is the most lopsided unit I have ever used (comparatively low defenses, speed, and skill compared to his attack and HP) but he was definitely fun and made sure I didn’t get too complacent. I don’t normally use fighters/axe units in the modern games because their accuracy is shit, their defenses are even more shit, and why bother with the headache. Once you can forge Boyd a good iron axe, though, his performance becomes more consistent. I did keep Tempest on him for a while, because I find it fun to use the skills a unit comes with, but I took it off eventually. It does help in certain situations when his hit rate isn’t so good (having the biorhythm doubled then is helpful).

Soren: I have a bias for this little asshole, lol. He’s a standard mage, basically. Kind of annoying to train in the beginning because he can barely take a hit, his movement is low, and MAGIC MAKES THE EMULATOR CRASH SOMETIMES, but if you can stick it out, you’ll be rewarded in the end with a unit that doesn’t care about how physically bulky any enemy is and can take down dragons with ease (plus, he heals A LOT because of his high magic stat even with a basic heal staff). I will admit, he’s a walking liability if Ike isn’t his support partner and magic in this game is slightly annoying because each element has its own weapon rank. He basically ate all of my Arms Scrolls because he has FOUR ranks to build (including the staff rank) and all of them have their uses, so I didn’t have him concentrate in one or the other. Although he gets weighed down by a lot of tomes because he is a twig, mine capped speed and didn’t have a problem doubling the dragons in the endgame with Thoron.

Rhys: One of the reasons I did a Greil Mercenaries run haha. He’s not a bad healer. It’s just that there’s benefit to training Mist as your main healer for that one fight later on, and having a team with THREE HEALERS is overkill (unless for whatever reason you made one of your mages use knives...). The problem is that while Soren can take a hit and Mist can run away, Rhys can do neither. His magic stat is very good though, and he was objectively better than my Mist by the end except that he wasn’t on a horse. He was really useful for the endgame since I gave him the Purge tome. Finally, he didn’t have to risk his neck to actually fight. I lowkey love his character though. 

Mist: She is so cute, but mine was so screwed in the stats department. If not for bexp, it would have been a nightmare to train her and Rhys at the same time. I early promoted both of them, but getting her to level 10 was hard. Mine ended up getting magic on so few level ups, that I gave her two spirit dusts by the endgame and it was still amazingly low. Her strength stat was 13. 13!! I love the horse, though. Makes her a lot easier to use once promoted. She has no shoving capabilities, though, whereas Rhys (frail, sickly man he is) can shove like half the army. Go figure.

Mia: I love Mia. She can have my heart and run with it. In newer games I tend not to use mercenaries/swordmasters because their movement is kind of eh, their dodge-tank capabilities are not that impressive, and I don’t like relying on crits too much, but Mia was such an awesome addition to the team. It can be a bit difficult to train her in the beginning given her low defense, HP, and strength, but once she gets going, she wrecks things like nobody’s business. Would have liked to do some Wrath combos with her, but mine had Vantage and Adept and that worked just fine with a Killing Edge or a forged sword of some sort. The only issue is her super low strength cap (22?? really??) but the reliability of her crits and/or skill procs make up for that if you can get her past the early game.

Rolf: ROLF. Literally only viable because of bexp. I actually really love how they wrote his character, but what were they thinking by making him join so late, with such low bases AND his strength growth isn’t even that good (40%, less than Oscar’s). All else could be forgiven if his strength growth was at least 50% like his speed. If you can’t actually do damage, there’s no point. Once you pour exp into him like nobody’s business, he can actually be a good unit. I do really like using him, and mine got enough defense and resistance that he wasn’t a liability, but he definitely needs investment. On the other hand, his hit rates were so good that Gamble actually worked well on him.

Shinon: The racist asshole whose only redeeming quality is his relationship with Rolf. I loved their support chain, and actually I do like how the game put him on our team (after giving you a hard time recruiting him) because of how it brings an element of realism makes these characters more human, but yikes he’s potentially worse than Rolf to train because of how long he’s gone for. If you put aside the need for even more bexp to use him, he’s a pretty good crit unit. And he can surprisingly take a hit once trained. I left Provoke on him and BOY he nearly got himself killed in the endgame, but it is pretty nice to draw aggro in order to get some enemies closer for the foot-locked units to kill.

Gatrie: I miss tanks. Newer games make them so much less fun to use because they don’t tank very well (I’m looking at you, Fates...). Gatrie can’t get places fast and only laguz can shove him, but it was fun having someone who can take a million hits and soften enemies up for the others to take care of. He can’t really one round anything because he can’t double and leaves them with a few hit points left (except if he procs Luna) but he’s a worth while addition to the team. Takes a bit of bexp though, since he often doesn’t get as many kills as the rest.

Reyson: Not a Greil Mercenary, but like I was going to pass up a dancer singer who can refresh FOUR units. It was a pain in the behind to get the Knight Ring, but he does make really good use of it. He can also use the Full Guard ring so he can enter certain areas without being murdered by ballistas. I love his bird form, and the fact that frail heron man can SHOVE people who the tiny people in my army can’t (Mist, Rolf, Soren, I’m looking at you). no but really, Reyson’s character is actually really good too, I like him. 

It was, uh, interesting getting through some of these chapters without a flier. Absolutely not necessary to have one, and if it was a chapter where I kind of needed someone, I just used Tanith or Janaff (the Naesala chapter was the only one that was annoying without a trained flier).

I genuinely had no idea who to stick skills on, haha. This was an interesting system where you really had to think about who to give a skill since they’re like old TMs in Pokemon...one use only. I like to have some limitations in the skill system though, unlike Awakening and Fates where it’s a free for all. I just like the more limited set of options.

You know, I don't remember Summer Musashi or Summer Nero or Summer Tamamo or Summer Artoria or Summer Atler being this gimmicky...honestly not even sure if Bunnytoria counts. Kiara swoops into being the latest 5-star Summer Servant, and comes in with one of the most absolutely bloated kits in the entire game. I have her and can barely be arsed to remember everything she does. To start however, and to make things simpler, let's look at her fundamentals.

Her base stats aren't amazing. Like most Moon Cancers, she has very high HP and more middling ATK. Her ATK isn't that bad, but I'll never say no to having more ATK on a Servant who has an AoE NP. Her NP generation is...very average. She'll generate on average 34% of her NP gauge with her AQA chain, which isn't spectacular really for her card set. Her star generation isn't great either, with her best chains generating 15 crit stars on average. Blame her single 3 hit Quick for that.

Moving onto her skills...first we have Mermaid's Flesh EX. It gives her a powerful 5 turns Guts on a 6 turn cooldown, which is already enough to give praise, but it also removes her debuffs, gives her a decent HP regen, boosts her NP damage, and gives her a unique buff. I know I talked up Cu Chulainn's Guts buff when it was revealed, but this makes it look laughable in comparison. Her unique buff gives her another unique buff that lasts for 4 turns, ever turn for 4 turns. What this means is at Level 10, and honestly probaby at least Level 6, you will always have some number of this unique buff active all the time, since the last one will last a couple turns in. This buff is used to power up her second and third skills, which is the primary gimmick of Kiara and her unique one. This skill is fantastic, its a great survival option, and does basically everything else you want.

Her second skill is Supernatural Power (Ink), of which I am pretty strongly annoyed that Kiara gets a stronger version of this, at base, than Hokusai does. Why did that happen? Anyways, this is an NP charge with a star bomb baked into it, granting 30% of her NP gauge and 20 crit stars at max. On a 5 turn cooldown, this is a rather fantastic skill that helps to remedy both her average NP generation and poor star generation. Of course...that's before rank-up. With one Skill Rank Up buff used, the charge is boosted to 40% and the star bomb boosted to 25, and with two, it becomes 50% and 30 stars. At max skill rank, Kiara has access to one of the most powerful NP charges in the game, and it's only really slow for its first use, since you should always have some Skill Rank buffs active from that point on. It basically solves her NP and star generation problems every time its used.

Clam Palace gives Kiara not one, but two skills with a ton of different effects. It gives the party 1 hit of evasion for 3 turns, being a slightly weaker Harp of Healing in that regard, removes Ignore Evasion buffs from the enemy, inflicts a unique mental debuff that reduces crit chance, reduces defense, and Arts resistance. This skill is her damage steroid, and its very good for what it does. It turns on the special damage clause on her NP, boosts her Arts damage by 44%, 56.25%, or 69% depending on the rank, and is even a solid support option, although one that's not immediately available. The cooldown is even reasonable for this skill. It's very good.

Even her passives are good. Extra Arts performance, NP damage, and Defense all are appreciated, especially since they're at very high levels for passive skills. It's truly something.

Onto Kiara's NP, it does okay damage if the enemy isn't inflicted with a mental debuff. Thanks to her class and low ATK, it actually doesn't do as much as one would hope, even with her steroids factored in. It's enough to kill hands, at least. But when mental debuffs are involved...the damage goes up pretty significantly. I've heard from sources I trust that this is an effective damage buff, so not only do I have to edit the Quirinus analysis, but it makes Kiara's damage very strong, more than doubling it. Her NP will do about 68k damage on average to neutral targets with just the 3 Bewitchment buffs her 3rd skill gives, which is quite notable. It's not as powerful as say, Arjuna Alter, but it's comparable. With proper supports, Kiara can also function as a decent boss killer, since her steroids are a little on the low side and she can hit some pretty high damage in the right team comp, but her efficacy compared to ST NPs is questionable.

Onto looping discussion for a moment, it's possible. Due to the way Kiara works though, it's a bit complicated to determine how to optimally farm enemies. Since all of her steroids except for the NP damage on Mermaid's Flesh are debuffs, you need to hold them for the final wave, especially since with two stacks of Rank Up buffs she'll have a maximum power NP to use. At NP 1, this will restrict her to farming Rider and Caster mobs since she can't get the necessary amount of overkill hits from even neutral NP mobs like Sabers, and even then, this has a limit of about 40,000 HP since she'll need 6 hits of overkill in total, and requires the use of Fragment of 2004's NP gen buff. With Sign of Smiling Face or Royal Icing, she can farm Saber enemies with less than 30,000 HP optimally, and again with Fragment of 2004. With Assassin and Berserker enemies, with Royal Icing / Sign of Smiling Face, she'll need to use her 3rd skill turn 1 along with Fragment of 2004 to farm, which will dramatically lower her NP damage turn 3. If you have Kiara at a higher NP level, she's far more efficient at looping, and actually becomes a pretty great looper due to being able to largely ignore strong wave 3 enemies. At NP5, she'll do more than enough damage to be able to easily beat any mob with her Skill 3 up.

Support Options: Kiara really should be used with pretty much every single Arts support you can throw at her. They'll boost his damage, her consistency, and in many cases her survivability. It really doesn't get more straight forward than that. You can do gimmicky teams with Fuuma, Summer Abby, and another Kiara focused on mental debuffs, but it really isn't that worth it to give her a bit of a stronger NP.

Command Code: You'll want to focus on Command Codes that increase the star absorption of her Arts cards, in order to give her better access to crits, and NP generating codes. The majority of Kiara's damage is focused in her NP, so she doesn't benefit from card damage boosting command codes as much as other Servants.

Craft Essences: Really depends on the team you're using her in. For the majority of situations, The Black Grail, Royal Icing, and Sign of Smiling Face are her strongest options available, dramatically boosting her damage. Dive to Blue, Sumo CE, and Painting Summer are also good options thanks to her delayed 50% NP charge, and she can even use Kaleidoscope for instant NPs if that's what you need. Favor the first batch of CEs on dedicated Arts teams, and the second batch for general use teams.

Competition: Space Ishtar is, surprisingly enough, Kiara's main competition. Kiara's advantage over Space Ishtar is her ridiculous NP damage potential, but Spishtar is a much easier Servant to use for farming. Kiara's NP damage is so good that she comes out as the best Moon Cancer DPS, outshadowing everything else. Both BBs and Jinako still have their benefits, but they can't really claim to provide stiff competition in the damage department comparatively.

Pros: -Three incredible skills with powerful and varied effects -Guts, HP regen, and Evasion give Kiara surprisingly survivability -Large NP charge and star bomb -NP damage is very high for an AoE Servant and she can easily trigger her effective damage buff -Solid looping potential -Can solo well thanks to her Guts and HP regen, especially versus Avengers

Cons: -Getting the most out of her skills is difficult thanks to the delayed nature of her Rank up buffs -Looping potential is reliant on NP level, low NP levels will farm less effectively than usual -Moon Cancer class is bad offensively, only hitting Avengers SE -Skill 3 is nothing but debuffs, meaning she generally will only hit hard for one wave -NP damage is much more mediocre without Skill 3

Kiara is probably the best offensive Moon Cancer we have right now. Her damage is pretty great, she can farm well in Arts teams, and she has good survival options. Despite her flaws natural to her kit, she's a very strong 5-star thanks to her great kit and good NP. Learning to use her might take some time, but you'll be better for it.

So after 110 hours, I finally beat Persona 5 Royal. Before going into complete FFVII mode, I wanna lay out all my thoughts.

Blah, blah, blah, spoilers for everything under the cut.

To start off, I loved Royal. The gameplay was so much fun and it felt like such a natural evolution from vanilla P5. Probably my favorite change was what wad done with Baton Pass. Trying to pass to your entire party was very fun and very satisfying, especially if Joker got the ×4 or even ×3 and got to abuse a possibly charged Hassou Tobi lategame. It was pretty broken, but I don't mind things being broken once you go to the effort of figuring things out. Speaking of broken things—

Showtime attacks are super cool. I didn't know what to think of them at first because of how stupidly strong they are, but after I got to some harder boss fights where doing about 1k damage per attack would only get rid of about a small fraction of the shadow's health, I wasn't complaining.

(Also, I never actually got to see Joker and Violet's showtime. Oops.)

The fact that the damage scaled like that was really good, especially once you get into the third semester where party members have severe and colossal damage moves and even healer Morgana can do 150 damage per basic attack without buffs on an enemy without debuffs. The enemies' damage output remained kind of sad though, but uh....you can't win 'em all ;;

To finish showtime talk, Joker and Crow's showtime was heccin' great. I never skipped it. It was Batman in my animu JRPG so it was 10/10. It also did way more damage than most of my party members' showtime attacks so ey. It finished off that Yoshitsune request boss too with around 2.4k damage so I'm obligated to like it. On that note, how is showtime damage calculated? Do certain showtimes do more damage, or does it just depend on the offensive stats of the party members using it?

Technical damage was beefed up too, and I probably should have tried to take advantage of it more than I did but I never figured out how to make technical damage reliably knock an enemy down. I know that there was a way to do it but I never figured it out. Yes, yes, I know it was because I skipped tutorials but everything else was so busted, I never felt the need to go back and read said tutorials. I did read that book about technical damage though in-game, but it just added more technical combinations.

Onto other changes though, it could have been because I was playing on hard, but status ailments became about 10 times more useful. ...Actually, no, it was definitely because I was playing on hard, but even so, I felt like more bosses were weak to them when compared to P5. They went back to being mostly immune to them, especially in the new semester, but during and before October or so, status ailments became invaluable. It could have been because I sucked that much, but my party members, and even sometimes Joker, would get left with double or even single digit HP by near everything, even if I debuffed and buffed. Queen got regulated to a forget bot, but man it carried me through some boss fights. ... i.e., Kaneshiro's fight. Well, that and Mona's confuse.

I liked the Will Seeds too. They were a fun way to kind of change up the palaces and for me to hunt down. Even though yeah, they are pretty broken (especially with the accessory you get from the 2nd palace being able to get rid of elemental weaknesses for whoever has it equipped, not to mention the ability to give charge or concentrate to another party member), I still can't say I used them over my SP adhesives most of the time. I used the one that got rid of elemental weaknesses on Crow, but that was just because I could only use him and Joker at the time and did not want enemies to get another move on him to get another chance to hit either of them.

The changes to Mementos were amazing. Like the rest of them, they were pretty busted, but still. Amazing. I feel like I'm in the minority with this, but I didn't mind Mementos. In fact, I kind of liked going through the grind of going through it. Although...tbf, I kind of liked Tartarus too. Its 264 floors were a bit much, but I liked being able to turn off my brain, put on a podcast or YouTube video in the background for me to listen to then go through Tartarus in one or two in-game nights.

Back to Mementos, collecting stamps and flowers for Jose was fun, and being able to change the cognition for Mementos was busted. Since you can get EXP from auto-killing, you get over-leveled very fast. It doesn't help that you have to backtrack floors for stamps since they randomly generate, so you get even more money, experience, and items. On the bright side though, no, I didn't need to wander around singing "I've Been Working on the Railroad" with Mona and Skull for an hour and a half trying to find the materials for the Eternal Lockpick (which was renamed in Royal to Permapick ... I guess???)

Because of the changes you can make to boost item, money, and EXP gains, Mementos became the prime grinding area. Even more than the card shuffle thing in P3. Since you got so much EXP from ramming shadows even without leveling up EXP gain. I put all my stamps into getting more items and money until I couldn't anymore and I had near max every single crafting item, and never had to worry about the cost of anything ever. Combined with the money gains from killing shadows, you can also pick up sellable treasure from the item cubes in Mementos and it can end up selling for well over a million yen. So getting to max didn't even require Joker abusing the confuse status ailment or abusing the shadows with "You can do better than that."

I didn't mind the Mementos music, even when I was playing the game without something else playing for me to listen to, but now that Mementos does have new music, yeah, I realize now how much better it is. I wouldn't listen to it alone like I would Rivers in the Desert or anything, but it was a nice change. I listened to one of the songs before the game had its western release and didn't like it all that much, but actually playing the game while hearing it made me actually like it.

I got to level 99 though before the game was over. It made it so Joker and Crow were able to tag-team the Reaper then kill it in 3 turns. I had thought that trophy would have been a lot harder to get lol. It was pretty weird seeing the Reaper in such clear lighting though due to the new Mementos area though, I have to say.

Onto the bosses though...

I loved the changes to the bosses (except the 5th one but that's just because I hate everything about the 5th palace, even if Royal did make it about a million times more bearable).

Kameshida having cognitive Shiho and Mishima as helpers for the boss fight was such a good change, and made him about that much more hateable.

Madarame's boss fight in vanilla P5 was the hardest boss in the game for me, even on normal mode, but it was made so much easier in P5R. Madarame didn't bring back his painting form, but instead brought back elemental versions of himself specifically so the player can abuse Baton Pass. Baton Pass combos are extremely satisfying to pull off, so I enjoyed it immensely. Honestly, having that as the second boss in the game was so much of a better decision than what was in P5. That, or I'm still salty about all the deaths I had from fighting him the first time.

Kaneshiro was definitely harder, and I was a little stuck when he called his cronies out to guard him. Mona and Queen using confuse and forget while Skull and Joker attacked Kaneshiro made it a lot more bearable though. I also kept using spotlights on Joker so the enemies would attack him. He had Shiki Ouji equipped and they only ever did physical moves when my status effects missed, so I was never at risk for losing the fight. ... And then of course Skull and Queen finished it off with a showtime attack after Mona got yeeted.

Sphinx mom was a lot easier. I didn't know that the right dialogue choices made it so Oracle would guard you until someone told me, so I was sitting there surprised at how much easier it was lol. I did get stuck at the end though because it didn't look like I was damaging it. I thought Oracle needed to bring back the crossbow so I just kept buffing and healing. It took about 10 minutes for me to get bored and start attacking it again and it turned out I could attack it, but it was just that sphinx mom's HP wasn't visually moving before eventually going down. Joker still used Shiki Ouji which had learned an immunity to wind so. Easy victory (ignoring the part where I'm a dumbass).

I switched to easy mode for Okumura. I just did not care at all. I hate his palace, I hate the music, and the enemies could range from being easier to kill than the enemies in the first palace to being a pain in the ass, so I wanted to have it be over. If I didn't have an unreasonable hatred for the 5th palace though, I probably would have liked the change. It was challenging without being complete BS, at least much more challenging than how it was originally in P5. Having the enemies run off though did get pretty annoying when I was trying to beat it legit but I was just so done at that point, it was more on me than the game lol.

Part of the reason why I was so eager to get through Okumura's palace though was to get to Sae's palace. Because I love Sae's palace, and just in general, the entire month of November. It has amazing story bits, still the height of P5's story if you ask me, a great palace, and Whims of Fate is one of my favorite tracks from P5's OST. Sae's boss was even changed to when she spins the wheel, whatever element it goes to, she uses that element and her resistances would change. I loved that, and it was extremely fun to take what you more or less should have learned about enemies' attacks and their correlating weaknesses and use them for a boss fight. So much better than the original where you don't need strategy at all other than "hit her hard lol."

Shido's boss fight was changed to be super climactic. They made it easier for the sake of Joker being able to confront the dude that got him a criminal record and directly ruining his life, and I can't complain. It felt amazing to 1v1 him. The game fixed the possibility of being screwed by it by having him attack in a certain order like the twins do in their special fight, so that was nice at least.

Yaldabaoth's boss fight was the same. Still easy enough, as long as you're careful. Or...not careful but extremely lucky. I wasn't able to finish it off while it was charging up its almighty attack, but my entire party ended up dodging it so it didn't even matter lmao. Now that I think about it, it very easily could have been because of that one Will Seed accessory that makes you dodge attacks but... I don't care. I was still super lucky I didn't get wiped and be forced to start the fight over starting from the Holy Grail.

The new boss... Uhm... It was taking way too long so I ended up cheesing it with Haru's third persona's new move that basically makes you invincible for a turn halfway through the fight. ^^; Noir was a Vault Guardian bot, Queen just healed and took advantage of one of the tentscles' nuclear weaknesses to Baton Pass to Crow when she could, and then Joker and Crow did all the work. Crow's third tier persona's almighty move kicked ass and you know what else kicked ass? Hassou Tobi abuse. The other 2 phases weren't even really fights, so at least that kept it from dragging too much, despite all the phases it had.

When Joker and the boss had that punch-out fight though, I lost my shit. I was laughing so hard I started to cry and my back was hurting. I don't even remember why I thought it was so funny, but I was laughing my ass off. I couldn't even press X to get Joker to punch because I was laughing so hard. Right before it happened, I joked to my sister that a tutorial would pop up and suddenly the gameplay will have the controls from that P4 fighting game and you have to learn that in order to have one last showdown. And then I got the prompt to punch. Then Joker punched. And I started laughing.

11/10 would punch Adam Kadmon man again

On the topic of the new stuff though...

Kasumi/Sumire/Violet was pretty fun to use but badly, badly overshadowed by both Joker and Crow, at least during boss fights. She offered to join the party before Shido's palace and she really should have joined then. Maybe she would just be absent for the Mementos dungeon & Yaldabaoth/Holy Grail boss fights, but she should have been there for Shido's palace. I liked her wanted gimmick of being the crit'er, but when you get her, Mona's third tier persona learns an AOE Lucky Punch, Joker already has high crit, and I would always baton pass to Crow because of his severe almighty AOE ×3. Plus, the way I built my Joker with practically exclusively two personas, Yoshitsune and Kuguya Picaro, he was already the phys and light attacker except with the addition of being able to have an auto-concentrate at the start of every fight (I have no idea why—it's something with Yoshitsune but idk what it is), the charge skill, Yoshitsune's nature of tripling the effect of charge, and the additional electric damage. She should have been a party member before the new semester. Obviously this isn't the case for everyone, but for me personally, I didn't often find use for her, especially since she can't do colossal or even severe magic damage. She is a very good physical party member, but again, Joker already covers that better than any other party member can, including Skull.

Crow was a great party member though. I used him in every request and boss fight after I got him. I was a little salty he couldn't switch back and forth from Loki and Robin Hood but I suppose if he did, he'd make Violet even more obsolete lol. I liked Loki while playing P3, so I'm glad I was able to use that persona again. He had Debilitate which was amazing. Queen learns Checkmate when getting to the third tier persona, which is an AOE version of it, but honestly, whenever I was fighting a boss that I thought needed it at that point in the game, I didn't need it to be multi-hitting. Plus, it costed about 90 SP and no way I was using that over her healing, defense buffs, and nuclear damage.

But anyway, back to Crow, I loved using him. He basically turned into my almighty damage dealer, even with his somewhat weaker magic, at least compared to his strength stat, but considering the final boss fight, it was extremely helpful. It did take up a lot of SP, but I had 5 Somas, a ton of SP restoratives, and had basically asked Kawakami to make me either curry or coffee every single night I was able to, so I pretty much had an infinite supply of it.

It helped that P5R made Akechi a much more likable character too. I liked him all right in P5, but didn't find him all that sympathetic, and thought that the characters treating him so sympathetically was extremely jarring considering all the horrible shit he did (which includes making orphans of both Haru and Futaba). That still kind of holds true, but since you can actually build a social link with him outside of the story, you can see more of his character and it improved him in leaps and bounds. Not to mention that his 8th confidant rank was....something else ^^; having a section of the new story too with just Joker and Akechi, (and kind of Sumire too, but mostly just those two) was awesome. I loved seeing them team up to punch Adam Kadmon man in the face. Plus, having more time with him in the Phantom Thieves without pretense had him going "I am surrounded by idiots" basically the whole time he was there. Like—I even felt disappointed that Akechi was actually dead and he didn't survive. That's a huge improvement over from me wishing one of the dialogue options was "fuck you lmao" during his death scene at the end of Shido's palace when he asked the Phantom Thieves to promise him to change Shido's heart.

For Sumire though, she had a good character arc. Like her gameplay though, she was badly overshadowed by both Akechi and Maruki. Even still, I liked her character arc and everything, and her social link. Even if I ended up liking Kasumi more in the end anyway rip

That's kind of all I have to say about her, oof. She was good, but other elements took attention away from her pretty badly.

Maruki though... Maruki was amazing. He was a fantastic antagonist because I got to punch him in the face, his palace was amazing, I loved the music, the different sections were cool, and I even liked the color maze bridge puzzle thing. I definitely wouldn't like it so much if I ever replayed it, especially if I try to get that final Will Seed, which wasn't hard, but did take kind of a while, but I don't think I will be so it's not a problem.

He had such good motivations, and the fact that he didn't ever actually hurt anyone other than when he punched Joker in the face made him really sympathetic and redeemable to me. At the end of the day, all he actually wanted to do was make people happy and not have to suffer, and was willing to destroy himself in order to achieve it. But just like with every belief, it went too far and he took away people's free will and ability to pick for themselves. The kind of moral question about the entire thing was very interesting, and I kind of wish it was more further addressed. There should have been Sojiro or some other character that was perfectly happy in Maruki's alternate reality so they could challenge the Phantom Thieves in a way Maruki wasn't able to. Still, what was done was really good and I liked it a lot.

Even all that said, I have no idea why the hell Joker could not use Satanael. There was such a perfect opportunity to use it once Maruki evolved his persona to Adam Kadmon, a giant persona. Hell, it was still small when compared to Satanael. It's after beating Yaldabaoth so Joker should have access to it. It would have been epic to be able to use a giant Satanael in a normal-ish boss fight. I'm sure there are some explanations as to why, but the game never mentions it or even acknowledges Satanael so it doesn't count and I'm still bitter. The writers forgot that Joker has a persona literally as big as a cognitive god and that kind of broke some immersion for me. Immersion completely went out the window once Joker and Maruki started punching each other but STILL. Satanael's not that great a persona, but having it show up in the story again would have been so awesome to use a persona about as big as Shibuya more than once.

Hardly comparable to my beef about Satanael, but I wish that while the party members were acting as Phantom Thieves, or at least while they're in the metaverse, the names on their text boxes would change to their Phantom Thief names. There's no reason why they didn't, especially since the characters exclusively use their Phantom Thief names to call each other anyway. It's not a huge deal or anything, but I would have liked it.

I loved Royal, and totally think it's better than P5 vanilla. Its new semester kind of takes away from the superb ending of the vanilla game, but the new stuff still makes up for it. Don't get me wrong, you can still get the original ending from the vanilla game in Royal, at least I'm pretty sure you can, but it involves you missing out on all the new content, including Violet as a party member and getting Crow back, plus Joker's showtimes so it's not worth it imo

I wasn't actually looking forward to the game when it was announced, or even planning on getting it, but I had the Phantom Thieves' edition pre-ordered for me as a Christmas present so I wasn't going to...not play it lol. I'm extremely glad I got it though, even if I otherwise wouldn't have, and now that I have finished it, I'm very happy with the game. The gameplay's improved by leaps and bounds, and the new content was all amazing.

... And I got to punch Maruki in the face.

I did end up getting the platinum trophy for Royal too, so despite the Phantom Thieves den thing, I don't see myself going back to it, at least any time soon. It was an amazing experience, but I can set my sights back to FFVII now lol.

...Although, I did hear you can fight the twins and Lavenza so uhhh maybe i won't be shelfing it so soon—

Chapter 37: In Devil’s Grip

37-1 Raining down like a hailstorm.

This chapter throws Graviton enemies at you. Luckily, I was able to roll Iskar, an A-class Photon unit, when the Wild Beast adventurers got introduced. I know people at the time were pissed that there were lower class units (which would dilute the pool) but… look, not everyone would whale for the higher units nor has the patience to max SB/Luck everyone.

In lieu of not having A’misandra nor Amina, I maxed out the Whitewyrm Wand and stuck it on Zafitte^ to make her something of a healer. The otomo casts Tera Heal, chain; so with that and Giga Regen, my party won’t be hurting for healing.

Someone asked me if I’ll tackle the two Animata bosses. I did fight them, but I dunno if I’ll post up any updates about them. Probably not.

It starts with a small number of these new enemies.

Nothing good, evidently. Anyway, in this stage twisters will spawn as you progress through it, starting with this one, adding one more as you move on,

and ending with four on the field.

We’re introduced to some new enemies.

The Incapacitators, who only attack rows

...and Fragmentors, whose Powered Point Jammer skill will make the bar charge slower than normal for three turns.

 They sacrificed themselves to destroy

 No one could have known the answer.

All that remained was the path these

unexpected benefactors had given

 "Thanks to their sacrifice, peace will be

brought to our lands, and we will be protected.

 "Would you rather send our people to certain

death? I don't understand you, Pa'keppar!"

 "And these strangers who throw away their

Four of the five fights here are against the level 79 Incapacitators.

Finally, for the last floor, there is a stronger Incapacitator. Three rows! Golly!

37-5 Became tears that fell from his eyes.

It’s noble of them, but certainly foolhardy. Still, it’s good to know there are people who are behind the crew’s backs.

37-6 Filled with the remnants of unconscious feelings…

And we meet, and get a name for, the second riftworlder.

There are only three battles, but there are a decent number of enemies. The twisters are more of an annoyance, but it’s still something to look out for.

Especially in cases like this.

Poor Bahl was on the verge of death when I cleared this part of the stage.

I guess if you’re not aware of the other floor positions or you like to clump your units together, the twisters could make moving them around a little annoying.

37-7 Come forth into this world!

“What did you create using the Animata?”

“Create?”

“Heheh... You don't know? I will show you.”

 The man cut off a cube of space and blew into it.

Smoke began to fill it, turning from grey

to purple, and then to green.

 “The life breeder hatched something interesting...”

 An awful sound, like scraping metal,

sounded. It echoed through the ground,

vibrating everything.

 “Come forth into this world!”

 The smoke-filled cube burst open, flesh

and mechanical parts combining into

some kind of bio-machine weapon.

Despite the story, we won’t see anything new in terms of enemies. Maybe it’s just to demonstrate that all the enemies the party’s been fighting were all Shin’en’s creations. Anyway, have a screenshot of Zafitte^’s Heigh-Ho attacks.

37-8 Horrified by how frozen solid she was.

Yeah, Mutoh is not a good person. This is of course meant to be tragic, but I feel it’d have a bit more of an oomph if we got to see what poor To’toa looked like.

The party, of course, has no idea that this is all happening. They’re still fighting off Incapacitators and Fragmentors.

37-9 I have a bad feeling about this.

 "Where the hell did he go?"

 The battle ended suddenly.

“No! Don't do that!”

 The lizard chief never noticed that all his

actions played right into the demons' hands.

 Now, the planet's power which had long been

dormant would be unleashed.

 It came dancing down from the sky,

penetrated the ground and spread far and

wide, just as the demons wanted.

 The ground shook with a rumble.

"What is it this time? This noise is horrific..."

 The ground split, and mystical light spilled

out from the chasm.

The light resonated with the two Animatas

sailing the skies in the distance.

 "I have a bad feeling about this."

So, 37-9 has only three battles, but the light mentioned in the pre-battle text isn’t just for fluff.

This line from, presumably, Mutoh, leads into a gimmick that this stage has. Every turn, the light mentioned earlier will blind the party and do 500 damage to them. It’s not too serious and can be healed off easily, but it’s something to be aware of, nonetheless.

Here’s a nice screenshot of what Graviton attacks look like, as well as the stage gimmick. Anyway, for the first two fights, it’s against the usual enemies.

And here is the boss of this part, Energos. Supergravity Breath is a 3x multiplier attack that also displaces your units, while Gravitonball is a 2x Graviton and weapon (staff) attack.

From my notes, Energos seems to consistently follow a pattern as such:

1. Supergravity Breath, Area (1) > Move

2. Supergravity Breath, Ring > summon reinforcements (2x Fragmentor lv 77) > Move

3. Supergravity Breath, Area 1 > Move

4. Repeat

Definitely make sure you clear out the adds as they come in, so you don’t get overwhelmed.

I believe that once you knock Energos’ health down to around 50ish%, it will start using Gravitonball, which will hit two of your units – for my run here, it started doing so at 99665/205790 HP. The wiki notes its skillset has stuff like Gravitonball (2), (3), etc. that seem to imply that as it gets weaker, Gravitonball will begin hitting more of your party until it’s attacking everyone.

Energos will continue to do its thing, by the way. But if you managed to wear it down to this point, you can finish it off. Of course, if you so wished (and had the units), you could use tap skills to one-shot it from full health.

37-10 Before you could answer, you were hit by an infernal heat wave.

So. Going into this, I have to admit I was a little worried because Iskar was my only Photon unit. But then RNGesus smiled upon me:

And I rolled her! So, not only is Sayu a great mage, but I think her character design is pretty great! (On the other hand, I don’t care for her recode’s art. It is obviously fanservice-y design, but I felt that it came at the cost of being creative.) When she was released, Sayu was actually one of my white whales for Terra Battle and I’m stoked that I managed to roll her.

I also managed to roll Kir’ue, an SS class unit who debuted same time as Iskar. The more the merrier, really! I won’t complain about having another person to cover Photon.

Some had wounds so grievous they were

unable to move at all.

Its dark aura filled those who witnessed

you were just about to be assaulted by

yet another vicious heat wave when

 “Everyone, get back!”

 Hearing the voice, you jumped back and

dodged the heat beam by the smallest

of margins.

 “Pa'keppar, why are you here?!”

“I will explain later. For now, we must

stop that!”

For 37-10, you get a pretty interesting little mechanic here. This message pops up – in a display of unity for their fellows on this planet, any Lizardfolk units you have will have their attacking stats buffed by 1.3x, and their defensives buffed by 1.5x.

Compare S’naip^’s normal stats at level 90: 434 Attk, 245 MAttk, 291 Def, 254 MDef. It’s a pretty nifty buff, and it’s worth packing a Lizardfolk party, though as you can see I only brought S’naip along. This is partly because I didn’t really have a lot of good Lizardfolk units, and I felt Ma’curi might still be a bit fragile even with the buffs.

There are three battles; the first two are against the usual enemies. They aren’t too bad, but the twisters can be annoying if your units get knocked into them.

For the third battle, the boss is faced – Relic.

Relic follows a pattern, as well:

1. Supergravity Breath (SGB), 1 column > Move

2. Synergy Wave, 1 row > Move

3. Axionball > Move > Summons a Fragmentor

4. Repeat?

5. SGB, 1 column

6. Synergy Wave

While Relic won’t summon back the other adds, the Fragmentor’s Powered Point Jammer is annoying, so definitely kill them.

As you weaken Relic, it will add moves to its pattern.

Just keep at it and you’ll make it through.

  Their only consolation lay in the fact

that even after being toyed with by

malicious beings, Pa'keppar's group's

spirit wasn't broken.

 Although the two devils plaguing their

planet are not gone for good, for now

at least the Lizardfolk can enjoy a brief

respite from terror and strife.

 Pa'keppar spoke in a voice strong and

filled with resolve.

 “We will pull through. We will never

give in! And one day we will reclaim

our skies!”

 So what was the meaning of that encounter?

The lizard planet has a long and sordid history

of sacrificing lives and grudge-bearing, and

history likes to repeat itself.

 What was it all for?

 “If you find others in the same predicament

as ours, please help them like you helped us.”

 The only thing that can be said with any

certainty is that in this endless universe,

there are many other tribes and Animatas

that you have not yet come across.

So I had the feeling this is an in-story nod to the recoding mechanics. It’s just a little strange that it pops up now instead of earlier, given you get access to recoding as soon as you clear chapter 20. And prior to lambdas getting removed from the pool, you could roll them from the Pact of Truth... Oh well. With the threat to the Lizardfolk world beat back, so ends chapter 37.

Several hours later, Draco awoke to the feeling of something sharp pressing into his cheek over and over again. He brushed it off, but like a bird, it came directly back and started poking him again. Fearing it was a prank from one of the other Slytherins now, he quickly sat up to investigate his surroundings.

He mentally cast two spells in that instant, Lumos and Tempus. The time was around half 4 in the morning, and the glow from his wand revealed a charmed paper airplane commonly used to send messages. He exhaled in relief after the discovery. However, he couldn’t think of who would send him a message, especially so early in the morning. The Ministry was known to use these all the time, and for a second time in twenty-four hours, his stomach hit the floor.

Preparing for the worst, he opened it to see a single sentence: Meet me at the Quidditch pitch. A second wave of relief hit him just then. Still, the message wasn’t signed, and he began raking his mind, trying to figure out who would want to meet him at such an unreasonable hour.

Suddenly, the events of the previous day came rushing back to him, and it dawned on him who had sent the note. “Potter” he murmured under his breath. He threw his head back down on his pillow, sighed, and stared up at the ceiling for a moment before finally sneaking out of bed. He tiptoed past several snoring Slytherins and nearly tripped over a cloak some barbaric seventh year left laying in the walkway. He hexed the boy with blue hair for his troubles.

The communal lavatories were tolerable for students, but Draco dearly missed his private one at the manor.  He stared at himself in one of the mirrors and noticed his hair was getting long. The blond waves almost touched his shoulders. He’d been meaning to shorten it for a while because he didn’t want people having another reason to compare him to his father, but he actually liked the way this longer hair made him look. His father did have a keen fashion sense, even if all other aspects were lacking.

His grey eyes peered back at him in his reflection as he studied himself. His jawline had thickened, his shoulders broadened, and he’d gotten quite a bit taller since the previous year. To anyone else, he would appear quite handsome, even in a sleepy state, but all Draco saw when he looked at himself was the disappointment he’d become. He was a disappointment to his family, an even bigger disappointment to the wizarding world, and the biggest disappointment to himself. Shaking the thoughts away, he quickly prepared himself for the day. He pulled on his trousers that were still a bit too short, even after resizing everything that had been shrunken in his luggage. He quickly lengthened them and threw on a shirt that hugged him a bit too tightly, but he left that alone for now.

He headed toward the pitch and eventually saw Potter flying high above him, practicing various moves the Gryffindor team had added to their game strategy. He found himself admiring Potter’s finesse as he weaved in and out of the ring, but he shut down that train of thought when he realized what he was doing.     

He looked over to his left and saw a broom hovering just a few feet from the ground and assumed it was meant for him. ‘How presumptuous ’ he thought to himself, but he still grabbed the broom and mounted it.

Instead of flying directly over to Potter to make him aware of his presence, he decided to roam around a bit in the air and admire the rising sun as it’s orange glow made the lake look like liquid fire. He paused for a moment to take in the beautiful sight.

Moments later, he heard Potter pull up beside him, but he refused to acknowledge him. He would force Potter to speak first, seeing as it was his brilliant idea to meet at this absurd hour.

But he didn’t speak.

Not for a while anyway.

They both just hovered there for several minutes, watching as the sun rose higher and higher in the sky.

After what seemed like forever, Draco gave in and opened his mouth to break the uncomfortable silence. Just then, Potter blurted out, “So I was thinking about our potions project…”

Draco laughed at the blunt statement and added, “Good job, Potter. I didn’t think you were capable of thinking.” He cursed himself internally for resorting to such pettiness, especially when Potter seemed to be acting mature in this situation.

“Draco, this is serious. We don’t have a choice in this matter, and I need an ‘O’ in potions this year.” The comment was made in utter sincerity, and it took Draco aback for a moment. Also, had Potter really just called him Draco?

“Don’t be silly, Potter. You wouldn’t make a habit of skipping if you truly needed an ‘O,’ and the only reason you’d need an ‘O’ in potions is if you were planning on becoming an Alchemist or a Healer, and I don’t think you’re fit for either.” Potter’s exasperated look stunned Draco, and he cursed himself again for the petulant comment, which apparently hit Potter pretty hard because he shook his head and began descending toward the exit.     

“C’mon, Potter! It was only a joke” he responded, not willing to admit how immature he was being. Although, he didn’t know why he felt bad for hurting Potter’s feelings. When Potter didn’t acknowledge him, he tried again. “Potter, what is it you dragged me all the way down here for anyway?”

Suddenly, Potter made a beeline over to Draco and stopped directly in front of him, inches away from his face. “Oh, now I dragged you down here? That’s rich!” He paused for a moment and then added, “You’re the one who sent me a paper airplane telling me to meet you here!”

Draco moved back a few feet to get away from Potter’s accusatory position. “What are you talki---” The realization of what was happening suddenly hit him. He scowled and uttered, “Granger ” just loud enough for Potter to hear. But before he could respond, Draco bypassed him on his broom and went rushing toward the exit, ready for a confrontation with Granger.

Just then, Draco’s broom hit an invisible speed bump Potter must have wandlessly cast in an obvious attempt to show off, causing him to tumble to the ground. He got up hastily and started brushing himself off. “What the fuck is your problem, Potter!”

“Me? What is MY problem?... Fuck you, Draco!” He dismounted his broom, hit Draco with his shoulder as he passed, and made his way to the locker rooms.

Draco sighed and rubbed his temples. How was it that Potter could have him reverting to his 11-year old self? After a few moments, he realized that he should probably let Potter in on his own friend’s underhanded scheme to get them in one space together to chat. He took a deep breath and went to find the insufferable boy.

When he did find him, Potter was sitting on the edge of a bench, removing his Quidditch pads from his shins. He looked up as he heard Draco enter the room, and turned away immediately afterward. Even in the dim lighting, Draco could see just how green Potter’s eyes really were and this stopped him in his tracks for a brief moment before he collected himself again and prepared to speak.

“Potter, you really need to get better friends.” He didn’t mean for that to be an insult, but he understood why Harry reacted as if it were one. He meant to say, “Potter, you really need to keep better track of your friends,” but he couldn’t take back what had already been said, so he ran with it.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean?” he retorted as he stood up angrily.

“Your little know-it-all friend set this all up, and believe me, we’ll be exchanging a few words.” He couldn’t believe it, but he found himself smiling at how beautiful her scheme played out because even he, the king of mischievous schemes, didn’t figure it out. She’s a clever one; he’d give her that much. He took a seat at the other end of the bench and prepared himself for the conversation they were about to have.

Potter sat back down as the reality of the situation dawned on him. “Hermione, eh? So I guess she also sent you a paper airplane?... She’s clever, that one.” He smiled and looked down at his feet.

Stunned that Potter had actually figured it out, he responded, “I can’t deny it, but I also hate that about her. She’s quite annoying really.” He raked his hand through his hair and cast a sideways glance at Potter to see his reaction.

Seeing Potter actually laugh made something inside Draco’s stomach flutter. He’d rarely seen the golden boy truly smile, let alone laugh. He’d never admit it, but he thought Potter looked quite good when he smiled. The other boy turned to look at Draco and Draco could still see a bit of amusement in his eyes. He cleared his throat and continued, “Anyway, this project…. There is no way Slughorn will have mercy on us and let us switch partners, so I guess we’re stuck together for the next couple of weeks.” He looked down at his fidgeting hands, waiting for a reply.

“Guess so” Potter responded, still looking at the ground and wringing his hands together.

Draco scoffed at the response, remembering at the same time that Potter was not a master of words, so he knew he’d be the one driving this conversation. “Yeah, so maybe the best way to approach this is to separate roles, so we only have to spend limited time together and all that?” The thought came out as more of a question than he intended it to.

“We could do that…” he said still in the same position.

Potter’s tone was indifferent, but Draco felt like there was something he wasn’t saying. Potter’s non-responses were really starting to irk him at this point.  

“Is there something you’d like to add?” he said sounding annoyed as he moved his head in an attempt to get Potter to look at him.

“No…..” Potter said quickly, but then added, “well…”

“Well, what?” Draco said irritably.

“Well, you know I’m shite at potions, so if we are going to do well, I was kind of thinking that maybe we should actually be real partners in all this.” He finally looked up at Draco, his eyes revealing his expectation of a curt retort.

Thinking about it for a bit and then not giving into Potter’s expectations, Draco responded with, “I can’t really afford anything less than an ‘O’ either, so I guess we will have to.” The sigh of relief coming from the other boy was doing nothing to help the fluttering sensation still going on in his abdomen. “However… I don’t want other students nosing their way into our business. Meet me in the library after classes, and we can work in private there.” He got up to leave, assuming the conversation was over, but Potter quickly stopped him.

“Draco, wait,” he said calmly. Draco turned, crossed his arms elegantly, and replied, “Yes, Potter?”

Potter wrung his hands together nervously, looked at him and sighed heavily, “Nevermind,” and he turned hastily and walked away in the other direction. Draco scoffed at this and headed back to his dorm to get ready for classes, not even attempting to figure out what that was all about.

I just beat the Surge. Actually I beat it yesterday, but after playing NG+ for a while I decided to give my thoughts. Here’s the obligatory review type of deal!

When I went into this game I decided to compare it to their previous game, Lords of the Fallen, instead of dark souls. And the result? They improved a lot. Lords of the Fallen was pretty good in some aspects, but it was bogged down by glitches and clunky combat. The Surge seems to improve a lot on this because I had almost zero issues with the game. The game crashed on me once during my 20 hour playthrough, and that was it. Better than LotF that crashed on me several times in a row, plus all the glitches. The combat especially felt so much better. Everything felt satisfying, smooth and the weapons had the proper impact that makes you go “unf” when you hit things. Some weapons like the heavy weapons and single rigged weapons feel slightly floaty and weird, but nowhere near as bad as LotF. The combat and movement overall felt very nice and responsive which made the game so much more enjoyable. Oh, and the fact that the game didn’t have a massive day one patch was a big plus. I got to play the game minutes after getting it.

The level design was good for the most part. There was a lot to explore, loads of short-cuts to open and little hidden things scattered here and there. There also were a bunch of NPC’s to interact with and I was surprised how much they all had to say. Sometimes they had new dialogue when you visited them later on. Although no NPC particularly stood out I enjoyed chatting with them. The variety in levels was a bit lacking and the level design was really confusing at times. I never get lost in games, but in the Surge I got lost for hours because I missed a little thing, or a way opened for me somewhere and I had no idea where it was. But despite that I did feel like the level design was good enough to make exploration fun and rewarding. The game also encourages backtracking to previous areas for doors you couldn’t open before, and sometimes the areas would change. Like new enemies would appear and you’d be able to find new pick ups. That was a fun little detail, changing things around.

The bosses in the game are a bit of wasted potential. All of the bosses visually look really damn cool. Especially Firebug, which is my favorite boss in the game. But sadly they’re all very simple and the only challenge they pose is the fact that they kill you in a couple hits. Without health boosters they’re gonna just one shot you. Their patterns are simple and if you don’t go for the hardcore kill they’re laughably easy. They’re not that memorable beyond their visual designs and that’s a shame. The final boss especially, it looks so damn cool yet I beat it my second try. At least the final boss is better than the one in LotF, I can say that much.

Now for a few things I don’t like. Most enemies are going to one or two shot you in this game, which is honestly really annoying. Towards end of the game enemies get so powerful that they can one shot you even though you have 300+ HP and you’re wearing upgraded medium armor. Yes, I got one shot from full health by an end game enemy. This is terrible balancing in my opinion, c’mon devs surely you can design challenging enemies without making them one shot you. And the games biggest flaw. The lack of variety. This game DESPERATELY needs more enemies, bosses, armors and weapons. I wore the same armor and used the same weapons pretty much through the entire damn game. Only in NG+ I’m using the weapons I got from the final boss. And you fight the same enemies throughout the entire game, there’s some variation but it isn’t nearly enough. Also why the fuck can’t we get the flamethrower from the hazmat suit enemies? Huh, can you explain that devs? The lack of variety really hurts the game. While I enjoyed the combat and loved cutting enemies into pieces it eventually loses it’s flare.

The Surge could’ve been so much better if it just had more of everything. I can safely say that the game is a lot better than Lords of the Fallen, and they learned a lot from it. But it’s still pretty flawed. That’s why I’m hoping for a sequel that’ll fix these issues. Give us more armor sets and more weapons to play with. More unique and challenging enemies/bosses to fight. The limb cutting mechanic is so good, I LOVE earning my gear. I just want to see so much more of it. I gave LotF a 5/10 because of it’s glitches, but for The Surge I can give a confident 7/10. It’s a really unique and enjoyable experience and I’m sure you’ll enjoy it too if you just don’t compare it too much to dark souls like some other people. Should you buy it right now? Depends how much you want it. But I’d personally wait for a sale.

Otherwise known as: I spent four hours on this last night when I should have been writing essays (Ok, this is actually LONGER than my essay but whatever) 

And I have no life.

He stood before them, ears flopping (over his fur, green shirt as bright as the day they had last)- No.

That wasn’t them.

:Chara?: They whispered in their mind, unsure-

He turned.

“Howdy! Are you there Chara? It’s me, your best friend.”

Frisk did not like where this was going. Neither did their partner, from the feel of the thing.

(Asriel- )

Suddenly their vision blanked. A wave of power knocked them off their feet. They looked up. And up. And-

Fuck.

The God of Hyperdeath was waiting. He spoke, voice nearly knocking them off their feet again.

“ASRIEL DREEMUR”

:Really? Dramatic much?:

(The equivalent of a mental shrug passed through their mind.)

The fight began.

(It’s the end.)

They died almost instantly after Asriel pulled the whole “God mode” thing. To be fair, they weren’t really expecting all that much. It took them by surprise. The wave of stars blasted out from the void and punctured their head.

They died.

They should have been used to it by now.

But nope….still annoying.

Something was different this time, however. A sense of determination and stubbornness, welling up from both them and their partner. They both refused. They had come to far to be beaten by a stuck-up, self important, egotistical, souless-

Alright. Maybe that was going too far.

But still.

(Their partner gave them the mental equivalent of the “I’m absolutely done with your crap face.”)

Fine.

Three seconds later, they were back, Asriel- they refused to call him by that ridiculous name- (Again the mental equivalent of someone sticking out their tongue at them) still taunting them. They held on to their hopes, their dreams. They had come too far to give them up now.

Asriel was still monologing. Frisk ignored it and focused on dodging. They couldn’t afford to get hit- not enough hp. They ducked and weaved among the lasers and swords. Dodge the lightning. Dodge the secondary attack. Get hit. Heal. Repeat.

They easily fell into the rhythm of fighting and dodging- compared to the skeleton, Asriel was easy.

Pain lanced through them as their soul was split by a… Was that a ray gun? Seriously?

They died again. Refused. Came back.

(Keep holding on.)

It fell into a pattern again. Dodge. Avoid the hole in reality. Dodg-

Wait what?

It was their turn now. Frisk edged carefully to the edge of the pitch black hole that had opened in the middle of the floor. It looked like a piece of the non-existent floor had somehow broken off and dissolved.

(He’s too powerful! Reality itself is breaking now!)

:But how-?!:

(LV! Except this is SOUL power we’re facing!)

They remembered what they were fighting for: A future. A- well not home, per say. A place they could call their own.

They remembered that skeleton. Their fight. The taste of his-

(No. Not now.)

They held on. Kept dodging. Wiped the sweat out of their eyes. Cursed Asriel for making MERCY so hard to attempt. They ignored his continued monologing- seriously. One does not need to make a ten minute long evil villain speech. Sans had managed it in four lines, after all.

Although, come to think of it-

His voice crept again into their consciousness.

“Let’s see what good your DETERMINATION is against THIS!!”

Great. Multiple exclamation points. Never a good sign.

The goat-person in front of them seemed to grow and stretch, flesh twisting in ways it was never meant to. His head was thrown back. Mouth unhinged and fell open. The rest of his body vanished, replaced by something that looked suspiciously like the Gaster Blasters.

It laughed.

Flowey always did have a dramatic streak.

A light seemed to grow from it, breaking reality wherever it touched. Darkness crumbled, and lights flashed. Beneath it all was a sense of vast emptiness; a timeless void into which the whole world would crumble. Frisk stumbled back, soul and head pounding. Desperately they turned to run and flee but to no avail. The light overtook them, washing over their head with a searing brilliance. And with it pain. The light seared their soul, then their flesh.
