I finally watched the movie with Judy Garland.
i ...get where some of it is coming from now but... the movie frankly mangled significant elements of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
(and you know. was generally disrespectful to mostly the health and safety—but sometimes also the dignity—of its cast)
#the “Wicked Girls” interpretation of Dorothy squares with the movie but comes totally out of left field vis a vis Baum#Baum's wicked witch of the west is demonstrably wicked (having enslaved the Winkies) but#does NOT have it out for Dorothy in particular and only ever targets her alone to trip her to take the powerful shoes#(i don't believe Baum ever says the wicked witches are sisters either)#and Glinda in the books is perhaps too provincial not venturing out to offer help BUT#through the authorial magic of NOT BEING CONFLATED WITH THE GOOD WITCH OF THE NORTH#she avoids looking like an asshole and imparting the weird bs lesson of never wishing to leave home again#(which come to think of it the whole no place like home/if it's not in my backyard thing is a bit jarring with hindsight in *1939*)#and I feel like those notes are whence the world of Wicked#aaaaaand the movie never settles the Ms. Gulch vs Toto plotline!!! which. as a reviewer pointed out.#was actually why Dorothy was trying to leave!#book Dorothy is NOT even attempting to leave the farm when she's transported to Oz#although iirc she was trying to leave the *house* itself to look for her guardians when the twister hit it
