now that it's over, thoughts on Bendis' Superman as a whole?
pretenderoftheeast said: So, thoughts on Bendis' Superman and Action Comics' tenure altogether and separately now that it's over?
Anonymous said: Best and Worst things about Bendis' Superman run
Anonymous said: Now that it is over, what are your thoughts on Bendis' runs on Superman and Action Comics as a whole?
Anonymous said: Retrospective thoughts on Bendis' Superman as a whole now that it's, I guess, done?
Anonymous said: Hey so since Bendis’ Superman stuff seems to be done, what did you think of the run as a whole?
I decided to hold off a bit on writing on this one, if only so that I could reread the Action Comics side of it since Superman stood out in my memory a lot more. But now I have, and as we’re heading into a bold new era of Superman (and it’s coming in fast - just since I made my Superman in 2021 predictions we’ve gotten Ed Pinsent finally reprinting his legendary bootleg Silver Age Superman, Steve Orlando announcing his Superman analogue book Project Patron, an official shonen Superman redesign for RWBY/Justice League, PKJ’s Super-debut turning out far better than I ever expected, Superman & Lois’s first proper trailer largely taking people pleasantly by surprise, and my learning that there’s a Sylvester Stallone Old Man Superman analogue movie titled Samaritan coming out this summer) we’re ready to take a look back with at least a touch of perspective. I’ll lead with complaints, so everybody who’s been waiting for me to say that Bendis on Superman was Bad, Actually, savor this because it’s as close as you’ll get.
The Bad
* I hate to say it, but rereading that side of the run there’s no two ways about it: the structure of Action Comics as a whole is a mess. It baffled me from day one that it was the more acclaimed of the two books for so long - I guess people are hardwired at this point to think of ‘street’ stuff as where Bendis is supposed to be - because it was immediately clear that Superman had a well-defined story he wanted to tell, while Action was the usual Bendis off-the-cuff improvisation. It’s barely even a story in the same way, and it’s certainly not the ‘Metropolis crime book’ people took it as: it’s 28 issues of Superman and his supporting cast stuffed a pinball machine with the Red Cloud pinging off of each other as we wait to see who falls in the hole at the bottom, and partway through Leviathan and the Legion of Doom and 90s Superboy are tossed into the mix to keep it going a little longer. On an issue-to-issue basis it’s frequently really good, but the core plot of the book is *maybe* six issues stretched out over two and a half years.
* I’ve gone into this some before, but structure-wise Unity Saga also has problems: Phantom Planet rules but either it needed to be cut or the back half needed to be a year all its own in order to accommodate the scale of what it’s attempting. It’s got an interstellar civil war leading into the formation of the United Planets, family drama, Rogol Zaar’s whole deal, and Jon’s coming of age, and I’d say only that last one is really properly served. Even Jon forming the United Planets, while contextually somewhat justified in terms of 1. The situation being so far gone he’s the only one who’d even think in those terms, 2. Things being bad enough that these assorted galactic powers would be willing to try it, and 3. Him having the S on his chest to sell it, isn’t at all built up to within the run itself.
* Rogol Zaar sucks. He’s made up of nothing but interesting ideas - he’s an ersatz warrior ‘superman’ of a bygone age of empires up against the new model, he’s the sins of Krypton as a conservative superpower come home to roost, he’s while not outright said to be definitely Superman’s tragic half-brother and the culmination of everything this run does with Jor-El - but none of them manifest on the page, he’s just a big punchy dude with a dumb design who screams about how you should take him seriously because he’s totally the one who blew up Krypton. Even a killer redesign by Ryan Sook for Legion of Superheroes can’t fix that. There are lots of bad villains with good ideas who are redeemed with time and further effort, but I can’t imagine Zaar getting that TLC to become a fraction of whatever Bendis envisioned him as.
* The second year of Action Comics, after establishing itself in its first as one of the most consistently gorgeous books on the stands, leads with Szymon Kudranski’s weak output and then concludes with John Romita Jr. turning in some career-worst work. The latter is particularly egregious because for that first year Bendis writes a really collected, gentle Superman so him getting pushed into being more aggressive should have an impact, but Romita draws such a craggy rough-looking Superman in the first place that it mutes any sort of shock value.
* WE NEVER LEARN WHAT’S UP WITH LEONE’S CAR, WHAT THE HELL. You don’t just DROP THAT IN THERE and then NEVER FOLLOW UP.
The Good
* Superman got his real clothes back after 7 truly ridiculous years.
* Bendis fundamentally gets Clark’s voice in a way unlike almost any other writer - even all-around better writers of the character almost never approach how spot-on he is with having Superman speak and act exactly how Superman should.
* Supporting cast front and center! He writes a dynamite Lois, Perry, and Jimmy (even if many of Lois’s more out-there decisions in the run don’t end up retroactively justified the way you’d hope), Ma and Pa are more fun than they’ve been in decades in their brief appearances, he manages to turn having Jor-El in the mix into a positive, and the Daily Planet as a whole has an incredibly distinctive vibe to it like never before that I hope is taken as a baseline going forward.
* The non-Rogol Zaar baddies? All ruled. Invisible Mafia and Red Cloud are both brilliant ideas executed solidly if overextended. Zod as Kryptonian Vegeta, Mongul as a generational perpetual bastard engine primed to be incapable of self-reflection, and Ultraman as “what if Irredeemable but he’d never been a good guy and also he was a Jersey mobster” are the best versions of those characters by numberless light-eons. Lex is on-point in his sparse appearances. Xanadoth as a mystical cosmic monster older than time who still talks like a Bendis character is however unintentionally a hoot. The alt-universe Parasite is a more intimidating Doomsday than Doomsday ever was. And Synmar as an alien culture’s attempt at creating their own Superman and messing up the formula when they make him a soldier can and should be a legitimate major ongoing villain coming out of this run.
* Pretty much all the art other than what I mentioned already. Fabok does a good job bookending The Man of Steel and Ivan Reis does the work of his career anchoring Superman (special props to Reis as well for drawing the first ever non-Steve Rude interesting-looking take on Metropolis), and meanwhile you’ve got Jim Lee, Jose Luis Garcia Lopez, Doc Shaner, Steve Rude, Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, Patrick Gleason, Yanick Paquette, Ryan Sook, Brandon Peterson, and David Lafuente doing their own parts.
* Closely related to the art, all the little flourishes with the powers. Super-speed having a consistent visual with the background coloring changing, Clark internally putting numbers to the degrees of force behind his punches and what situations which numbers are appropriate for, ‘skidding to a halt’ mid-flight before crashing through a window, the shonen-ass major throwdowns as portrayed by Reis, how his super-hearing is handled as a prevalent element. Lots of clever bits that added flavor to what he does.
* While Unity Saga has problems, the whole of what Bendis does in Superman as a means of forward momentum for Clark and his world is excellent. The sort of three-act structure of:
** Clark is led to question his place in things over the course of a few adventures
** Involvement in the larger cosmos and the impact it has had through and on his family makes him realize the answer to his questions is that he needs to step up in a bigger way because there’s no benevolent larger universe to welcome Earth with open arms, nor a cosmic precedent for everything turning out for the best without some help
** As a consequence of the lessons learned by this change in the status quo Clark is inspired to make his own personal change in revealing his identity (with Mythological basically being an epilogue showcasing a ‘standard’ standalone Superman adventure while simultaneously highlighting his new status quo and how it fits in as a summing-up of Bendis’s take)
…does a great job of shepherding through ideas that lend a lot of forward momentum to Superman of the kind he hasn’t seen in a long time. Not perfect, but far lesser stories with far lesser ambitions have made huge impacts, so I’d certainly hope at least some of this sticks around even if, say, regardless of any retcons to the main line there are always going to be stories with Clark as a disguise and Jon as a kid. Oh, speaking of whom,
* KISS MY ASS, EVERYTHING WITH JON KENT RULED
Ahem. Probably a less confrontational way of putting that.
Do I think there was more gas in the tank for Jon as a kid? Totally, making him likeable and viable was the one really good thing the Rebirth era accomplished for Superman and I expect we’ll continue seeing more of it in the future one way or another. But whether or not him being aged up was Bendis’s decision, or working with marching orders to set up the eventually-(kinda-)discarded 5G, the coming of age narrative here is fire. He keeps the essential Clark Kent kindness and bit of Lois Lane cheekiness that reminds you he’s still their kid, which is a combination Bendis is basically precision-crafted to write, but his trials by fire give him a background entirely unlike the by-the-numbers “and here’s how Superman’s great kid grew up to be a great superhero too” narrative you’d expect while still arriving at that endpoint. If superheroes live and die by metaphors then Jon in here is what it means to grow up written as large as possible: leaving home for the first time (and seeming to shoot up overnight!), getting into the muck of how the real world works, being beaten down by authority wearing faces you’ve been taught to trust, scrambling to get through with the whole world against you, and in the end getting through by learning to rely on your own strength while keeping your soul intact and your head held high, and even managing to speak some truth to power. It gives him a well-defined life story with room to go back to and explore the intricacies of each leg of for decades to come in a way Superman hasn’t had since the original Crisis - someone someday is going to write a The Life & Times Of The Son Of Superman miniseries and it’s going to be one of the greats - and negates any question that he’s earned his stature as the heir apparent.
* Coming out of this, Superman’s world is fascinating. He’s out but rather than giving up his day-to-day life he’s openly spending part of his life as CLARK KENT: SUPER-REPORTER and part of his job on the cape-and-tights side of things is now KAL-EL: SUPER-SPACE-DIPLOMAT, Lois Lane coruns a foundation helping people whose personal continuities have been fucked over by Crisis shenanigans, Jimmy Olsen owns the Daily Planet but is still doing Jimmy Olsen stuff because that’s how he gets his kicks, and Jon Kent is going to college in the future. I’m not anywhere near naïve enough to think that’s how things are going to be forever, or shortsighted enough to think there’s no value left in the traditional setups, but god I hope these developments stick around for a long, long time to come and potentially become the new ‘normal’ as far as the ongoing shared universe stuff goes, because it all feels like the right and promising next steps to take for the lives of these characters. However it got here, for all the pluses and minuses along the way even if I maintain the former very much outweighed the latter as a reading experience, Bendis has a lot to be proud of if that’s the legacy he leaves on these titles.
* The recap pages at the desks!

All or Nothing (Chapter 2)
(Chapter 1)
The title of this fic is inspired by the song Fall by Palisades.
‘I wanna fall
And never once look back
I wanna know
I make you feel like that
I wanna make this the start of something
I wanna feel like it's all or nothing now
So can we fall and never once look back?
Cause baby I'm not looking for a "ten night stand"
I wanna make this the start of something
So can you say that you want it all?’
-------------------------------------------------
Murphy pushed the door open and took her hand, leading her through the people to the bar. People cheered and grinned when Murphy entered and she noticed a lot of curious eyes on her, which made her glance to the floor. Murphy let go of her hand once they got to the bar and Savannah noticed an older man on the other side of the bar.
“What do ye want lass?” Murphy asked her as he looked down at her by his side. She nibbled her lower lip and shrugged.
“I don't know, you pick.” She snorted, making him bark a laugh at her.
“Aye alright. Two Pints o’ Guinness and two shots o’ whiskey Doc please.” Murphy grinned to the older man.
“Comin’ r-r-right up lad...FUCK….ASS!” Savannah’s eyes widened at the man's outburst and Murphy burst into a round of laughter at her face.
“Don’t worry, he can’t help it.” He chuckled at her, making her smile and lower her head. She couldn't say she'd ever met someone with Tourettes before.
The man came back with their drinks and Murphy pushed the shot to her and he held up his own, smirking at her.
“To a good night.” He toasted, making her pick up her own shot and clink it with his. She knocked back her shot in unison with him and she barely grimaced as she set the glass back down. Murphy looked at her with wide eyes.
“Fuckin’ hell, ye certainly know how te put the whiskey away don’t ye?” He laughed incredulously, making her blush like crazy.
“It’s not my first rodeo.” She smirked back at him, her cheeks blushing slightly. He quirked a brow and shook his head with a grin, grabbing both of their beers as he lead them away from the bar.
“I’ll let ye meet me brother first before we find somewhere te sit.” He said softly as she trailed behind him. He stopped at a booth where a guy with dark blonde hair sat with a hairy man with a bushy beard.
“This is me brother Connor, and that's our best pal Rocco. Guys, this is Savannah.” Murphy beamed, making her wave shyly to them. Rocco nodded with a smile but Connor stood up, surprising her just like his brother as he pulled her in for a hug. She hugged him back lightly before he moved away and he gave her a once over, one he didn't bother to hide at all and she found herself blushing and feeling mighty awkward.
“Pleasure te meet ye lass.” Connor grinned as he moved to sit back down, turning his smirk into his brother who was squinting at him a little.
“Yer a lucky bastard aren't ye Murph?” Connor laughed, making Murphy purse his lips at him, resisting the urge to clip him around the ear.
“Aye, I am.” He said dryly before putting his hand on the small of her back and leading her away. Connor shouted something to Murphy in a language she didn't know which earned a snort and a shake of Murphy's head. She wasn't sure how to deal with Murphy's brother but he seemed drunk so she would just ignore it. Murphy lead her to a booth of their own and he sat opposite her.
“Sorry about him, he’s an ass when he’s been drinkin’.” Murphy snorted dryly as he looked at her almost apologetically. She just smiled at him and shrugged.
“It’s okay.” She replied, making him relax a little and smile back at her.
An hour passed by and the pair had been drinking quite a bit. They weren't drunk but Savannah was slightly tipsy and the alcohol had relaxed her a lot. She was glad that Murphy seemed to take the lead in conversation, telling her lots of stories from back home or funny things that happened at work, most of them involving his brother. She was laughing and would chime in and the alcohol had relaxed her that much she even told him some stories of her own. She found herself really enjoying his company and she felt at ease with him, he just had this way about him that made her feel safe and happy. They were mid-conversation when Connor suddenly sauntered over with a grin.
“Scooch up lass.” He smirked, making her blink up at him for a moment, she shuffled over in the horse show shaped booth so she was sat in the middle as Connor took her place.
“Well, would ye look at that, it’s a MacManus sandwich!” He laughed with a shit eating grin, making her toy with her glass as Murphy scowled at him.
“Ye want somethin’ brother?” He asked tensely, glaring at his twin.
“What? I can't come and see how its goin’ wit’ the pretty girl?” Conor replied sounding offended as he held his chest like he was hurt. Savannah felt incredibly awkward, Connor seemed like he was causing trouble for some reason and Murphy was visibly tense and getting pissed off, it was making her feel anxious.
“Her names Savannah.” Murphy bit out, his angry eyes burning holes into his brother, but Connor seemed unfazed as he just smirked.
“Well Savannah, if me brother here ain’t showin’ ye a good time, yer more than welcome te come and sit wit’ me.” He smirked, quirking a brow at her.
Oh how awkward this was. Connor was handsome, they both were. But she was here with Murphy and she had no idea why his brother seemed to be ruining this for him, he was making her feel incredibly uncomfortable and she was starting to panic as her anxiety increased. Murphy looked ready to punch his brother and she set her drink down.
“I uh… I need to use the bathroom.” She squeaked out, her voice betraying her sudden panic and Murphy looked at her apologetically as he stood up and allowed her out of the booth. He watched her scurry off to the bathroom before he sat back down and glared at his twin.
“The fuck are ye doin’?” He hissed, his hand clenching the glass so tight he was surprised it didn't shatter.
“What we always do Murph. Ye find a girl on that app thingy o’ yers, bring her here and we both go home wit’ her.” He stated like it was obvious, it was the system they had after all.
“Aye well, not this time.” Murphy bit out as he took a long pull from his beer. Connor quirked a brow at him and leant forward on the table.
“Is that right? Not up for sharin’ this time?” He asked patronisingly, a smirk on his stupid face.
“No, I’m not. I actually fuckin’ like her so ye can leave her well enough alone.” He warned, his tone harsh. Connor looked at him for a moment before grinning, nodding as he stood up and sauntered off back to Rocco. Murphy was more than worried though at the fact he hadn't put up a fight, Connor never gave in so easy.
Murphy sat there and his fingers tapped on the table nervously as he waited for the girl to come back. He knew she was anxious, he had seen it on her all night but she finally seemed to relax and now his brother had ruined it. He wouldn't put it past her to have fled and never come back, but her bag was still there. A few minutes later she came back out and walked over, sitting back down. She looked shy again and he cursed his stupid twin.
“I’m sorry about him. Hope he didn’t make ye uncomfortable.” Murphy sighed as he looked at her sadly. She glanced at him and she hated that look on his face, he looked so much better with his cheeky smile.
“He didn't, it's fine.” She smiled, a complete lie but she wanted to make him feel better. He nodded and sipped his drink, clearly not buying it but he appreciated the fact she tried to make him feel better.
“I need a smoke, ye wanna come outside wit’ me?” He asked hopefully. He really needed a smoke and he had no intention of leaving her alone in the bar or Connor would come over and God knows what he would do. She nodded with a smile and he breathed a sigh of relief as he stood up, leading her outside.
He lit up his smoke and inhaled as he leant against the wall. The air was a little chilly now and he watched her as she wrapped her arms around herself. She looked beautiful, more beautiful than in the pictures and he didn't know how it was possible. He loved her style, she looked part hippie, part alt girl and he liked the fact she had the sense of her own style instead of copying what everyone else was wearing. He didn't realise he was staring until she glanced at him and blushed, looking down with a shy smile. He smoked in silence, trying to calm himself from his brother, and the smoke worked wonders. When he was done he rummaged in his pocket and pulled out a mint, unwrapping it and popping it into his mouth. He really hoped his brother hadn't ruined this whole thing.
“C’mere love.” He said softly, holding a hand out to her as he leant against the wall. She looked at him curiously for a moment before taking his hand and he pulled her closer, making her hit his chest. She looked at him with wide eyes, her lips slightly parted. She wasn't drunk but she was on her way and she looked almost dazed as his hand came to her cheek. He smiled down at her and she noticed his eyes drift to her lips, she felt butterflies bloom in her belly as he leant down and captured her lips with his. It was soft at first, almost hesitant like he was giving her a chance to move away. She didn't want to move away though. He tasted like mint, faintly of smoke and some whiskey and she found herself loving it. Her hands rested on his chest as she kissed him back, melting into him and he deepened the kiss, his tongue running along her bottom lip demanding entrance, she was all too willing to obey to him. His tongue tangled with hers and she fisted his shirt as the kiss got more heated, their bodies were pressed flush together and she could feel his hardness pushing against her belly, it lit a fire inside of her.
When he pulled away, she was completely breathless and she closed her eyes as he leant his forehead against hers.
“Need te stop.” He whispered forlornly. She felt the sting of rejection and confusion as she moved away a little, unable to hide the disappointment on her face. He shook his head and pulled her closer again.
“Nay love, it’s not that, I just don’t think I could control meself if we carry on.” He admitted softly, his hands stroking her back soothingly. She nodded and looked up at him, blinking slowly.
“Is that a bad thing?” She asked curiously, finally finding her voice. Isn't this what guys wanted? She was a little confused about why he was stopping.
“No, but...I don’t want te just have ye for one night and never talk te ye again.” He replied as he leant in, his lips ghosting hers. She chased his lips when he moved away again and he looked at her almost satisfied at her reaction.
“What do you want from me then?” She whispered shyly.
He toyed with the end of her hair and tilted his head as he regarded her, the look made her nervous, being so close to him, being so vulnerable in this moment.
“I don’t rightly know if I’m honest. I want te get te know ye better, I want te take ye out. I like ye and I don’t wanna rush it.” He admitted quietly, shocking her just a little that he hadn't wanted to meet up just for a quick fuck, not that she would have minded in this case, because he was hot as hell. She blushed deeply and couldn't fight the shy smile that worked its way onto her face, it only made him smile back at her. He leant down and kissed her again, but it was short and sweet this time, it still made her melt all the same. When he pulled away, he beamed a grin at her.
“I’ll walk ye back te the bus stop.” He smiled, making her nod. She had no idea what time it was but she knew it was late, she was glad he would walk her back. They went inside so she could grab her bag and Murphy went over to Connor, she watched on anxiously as it looked like they were sharing some heated words before Murphy stormed over, taking her hand and practically yanking her out of the place.
The walk back to the bus stop was tense and she hated it, she had no idea what happened between him and his brother but she didn't like seeing Murphy this way, especially when it seemed to have something to do with her. They stood at the bus stop waiting for the bus and she heaved a sigh and looked at him, summoning all of her courage.
“What's going on Murphy?” She asked, making him glance at her, looking caught out and a little guilty.
“Its nothin’, just Connor. He knows how te get under me skin is all.” He replied, looking at the floor. Something seemed off though and it felt like he wasn't telling her everything.
“Why's he acting this way though?” She pressed, making him look to her and chew his thumb.
“Fuck...Ye’ll be mad if I tell ye.” He frowned, shaking his head as he looked away. It only made her fucking nervous, she had no idea why she could be mad at him.
“Why?” She asked hesitantly. He stood up straighter and stuffed his hands into his pockets, looking at her through his lashes.
“Look, me and Connor...we’re twins, and more often than not, when one o’ us meets a lass...we share her.” He stated carefully, making her eyes widen just a fraction. That was interesting, it certainly put the way Connor was behaving in perspective.
“Oh.” Was all she managed to come out with, nibbling her lower lip as she glanced to the floor. He took her hand and made her look at him again.
“It’s not like like wit’ ye, I swear. I actually really like ye, but he doesn’t like not gettin’ his own way and he’s bein’ a dick about it. I don't want ye te think that's what this is, ‘cause it ain’t, it never was.” He said sincerely, wanting to ease any worries she might have had. She couldn't hold his past against him, he could do what he wanted with who he wanted, even if it was a little out there in her opinion, but it did help her feel a little better that it hadn't been some weird elaborate plan for him and his brother to both get her into bed.
“I really like ye Savannah, I don’t want ye thinkin’ otherwise.” He lamented, stepping closer to her and cupping her cheeks. All she could do was blink up at him, she felt dizzy when he was this close to her. She just nodded, smiling shyly and he beamed a grin, looking relieved.
The bus pulled up then and she felt a pang of disappointment that she had to leave. Despite the issues with his brother, she had an amazing time with Murphy and she had really enjoyed herself.
“I better go, thanks for tonight Murphy.” She smiled softly, making him smile boyishly at her and nod.
“I had a really good time.” He grinned, making her blush a little, remembering the kisses they had shared. She glanced to the bus, really not wanting to leave but she had to before it drove off, the next bus wouldn't be for another half hour and she didn't want to wait around in the dark. She took a step back but he grabbed her wrist, yanking her close to him, much like before. She squeaked and then his lips were on hers, kissing her deeply. When he moved away she felt breathless and like her legs were made of jelly, all she could do was smile up at him like a schoolgirl with a crush.
“Better get goin’ love.” He smirked at her, seemingly so pleased with the reaction he had caused from her. She nodded dumbly, moving away as she got on the bus. He waved at her through the window and she waved back with a smile before sitting down, cheeks ablaze and a stupid grin on her face. Maybe Tinder wasn't so bad after all.

Dog Myths VS Facts: Can You Guess?
When it comes to our canine companions, there’s a lot of information floating around out there. But what’s a myth and what is actually fact? Read on for some things that may surprise you!
1. You can’t teach an old dog new tricks.
Myth: Not only can you teach an old dog new tricks, but he may even learn quicker than a feisty younger pup. Older dogs are usually calmer, more settled in their ways, welcome the extra attention, and very much want to please you. So grab some treats and teach aging Fido a new trick or two.
2. A dogs mouth is cleaner than a humans mouth.
Myth: Um … no. It’s true that we humans don’t generally catch stuff from getting drowned in doggy kisses, but it’s not because Fido doesn’t have a mouth full of germs (because he does). Dogs have about 600 various bacterial strains in their mouths (as do we humans). The difference is that most canine germs are not compatible with humans, so we normally don’t get sick from them. Notice that I said most — not all. There are definitely some germs that can, and do, pass from dogs to humans, which can range from very mild to severe. Keep this in mind, especially if anyone in your household has a compromised immune system.
3. My dog’s nose is dry so he must be sick.
Myth: Just because your pooch has a warm, dry nose doesn’t mean he’s sick. In fact, you’ll see the temperature and moisture level change throughout the day. For example, you may notice your dog’s nose is dryer when he first wakes up from a nap. That’s partly due to the drop in body temperature, and partly because he has not been licking it while he was asleep. A few other reasons your dog’s nose may be dry: he may be dehydrated or he may have a little sunburn.
The same holds true about a cool, moist nose. It’s not a total measure of health. Moist noses could mean your dog is putting his nose to good use (because when dogs follow a specific scent, their nose develops a thin layer of moist mucus) or it could possibly be runny from respiratory illness.
4. A wagging tail means a happy dog.
Myth: A wagging tail can have many meanings and not all of them are friendly. Dogs communicate with their tails. Positioning, postures, and facial expressions can give you big clues as to your pup’s current state of mind. I’ve written an entire article on the subject — click here to check it out!
5. Every year in a dog’s life is equal to seven human years.
Myth: If only it were that simple! But, of course, it’s not. Dogs do age much quicker than humans, but not at the very familiar 1:7 ratio. Where this rule came from is unknown, but it did originate sometime in the 1950s. At that time the average canine lived for approximately 10 years and the average human for 70 years—hence: 1:7.
During a dog’s first year of life, he actually ages more than twice that number. Check out this AKC infographic to see how the researchers break down canine aging. You’ll see that the size of a dog plays a big part in the aging process. Click here to read it.
6. Dogs are colorblind and can only see black and white.
Myth: No, dogs are not colorblind. Although they don’t see the rainbow in the same vibrant way we do, they do see it in color. Being able to visualize color all comes down to specialized cells in the eyes called cones. Humans and canines both have cones, but we humans have lots more of them. To see how your dog sees color check out my article! You’ll find a graphic there so you can see exactly how Fido sees color.
7. Dogs are as smart as a 2-year-old toddler.
Fact: Believe it or not, this is actually true. Well, Fido might not be ready to sign up for preschool, but studies have proven that he can learn as many words as a toddler. Take the time to work with your pooch and he might surprise you … a lot! Check out my article titled, “How Many Words Can A Dog Understand”. According to psychologist Stanley Coren,
“The average dog can learn 165 words and dogs in the top 20 percent of dog intelligence can learn 250 words.”
8. Dogs sleep curled up in a ball to keep their organs safe.
Fact: Curling up in a ball to tuck in for a good night’s sleep is actually a throwback to their wild ancestors. It was their way of staying safe and protecting themselves from predators. Sleeping curled up protects vital organs, keeps Fido warm, snuggly, and feeling safe. Find out more about dog sleeping positions here!
9. Puppies are born blind and deaf.
Fact: Yep, puppies are actually born blind and deaf. Their eyes are not fully developed at birth and remain tightly closed. It’s the same with their ear canals. A puppy’s ear canals and eyes will open in approximately two to three weeks. Meanwhile, these little cuties have to maneuver around purely by scent. They rely solely on their noses to find their mama so they can nurse and snuggle.
10. No two dogs have the same nose print.
Fact: I’m unique, you’re unique, and Fido is unique too! That’s right! Just like no two humans have the same fingerprints, there are no two dogs that have the same nose prints. And that’s a fact!
11. A dog can suffer foot damage if his nails are kept too long.
Fact. If you hear your dog’s nails tapping on the floor when he walks then it’s definitely time to grab the clippers and trim those nails. When a dog’s nails tap on hard surfaces, it pushes their nails back up into their nail beds, which can be extremely painful. Not only can it put pressure on the toe joints, but it could also force the toe to twist to the side, resulting in soreness or even arthritis.
If you’re a little timid about cutting your pooch’s nails, you’re not alone (especially if your dog has black nails where you can’t see the quick). Check out my article on How To Cut Nails Without Being Afraid.
12. Dogs use their whiskers to sense the world around them.
Fact: Yep, you can think of a dog’s whiskers (also known as vibrissae) as little sensors that help him navigate the world. Those coarse long hairs that protrude from Fido’s face and muzzle are loaded with sensory nerves at the base of the follicles. These specialized sensory neurons send messages to the brain so your pooch will be able to assess what’s safe or dangerous while maneuvering through his environment. So, what happens to dogs that don’t have their whiskers? According to Kimberly Alt from caninejournal.com:
“If your dog’s whiskers are cut off, it can interfere with their ability to navigate their surroundings. Your dog may run into more items and be more susceptible to getting injured. The removal of a dog’s whiskers can be uncomfortable and stressful for them.”
13. Normal body temperature for a dog can be as high as 102º.
Fact: For humans, our normal body temperature is roughly 98.6º F. Knowing that, it would seem like 102º is pretty hot. But it’s actually not for Fido. Normal body temperature for a pooch can range from 101 to 102.5º. So, if your pooch feels hot to you, it’s because he is naturally hotter than you. But not to worry, he doesn’t have a fever – it’s perfectly normal. Above 102.5º would be considered a fever and a trip to the veterinarian would definitely be in order at that point.
14. Paul McCartney in his hit song “A Day In The Life” included a high-pitched dog whistle sound at the end of the recording.
Fact: If you’re ever playing the Beatles Sergeant Pepper Album and you’re sitting with your dog, play the last song on the album called A Day In The Life. At the end of the song, keep an eye on your pooch. Yes, I have tried it with my dog! And yes, her big ears perked right up!
15. Look at him, he looks so guilty. He knows what he did!
Myth: Oh, how many times have we heard this or even said it? Well, it’s actually a myth. Your dog is not looking guilty. Rather, that look on his face is more than likely a reaction to you as you yell at him and shake your finger in his face. He’s confused and maybe even afraid. Dogs live in the moment so whatever he did earlier when you didn’t see him, it’s time to move on.
16. Just like a human baby, a Chihuahua is born with a soft spot at the top of his head.
Fact. Yes, this is true. Just like a human infant, a Chihuahua has a soft spot called a molera. The opening is formed where the parietal and frontal bones have not yet fused together. The opening should close within one to four months. It should be noted, though, that for some dogs the plates never pull together and close. For these dogs, precautions should be taken to protect against head injury.
17. If you are just quickly running into the store it’s okay to crack the car window and leave Fido in the car.
Myth: No, no, no…never! It’s recommended to never leave your dog unattended in a car. In winter it’s too cold and in summer the rising temperature in a car can turn deadly in minutes. Please take a minute to read my article on this subject and you can watch Dr. Ernie Ward, a famous veterinarian who’s appeared on Animal Planet, as he shows you exactly what happens in a hot car.
18. Adopting shelter dogs are a problem.
Myth: Any dog (or person for that matter) could be a problem — you just never know. But just because a dog is in a shelter doesn’t mean he’s trouble. Many of these pooches were family dogs who, for some reason, were dropped off. Sometimes people get down on their luck and can no longer keep their pets. It could be for financial reasons, maybe a move where they can’t take the dog with them, illness, or maybe they just never knew what to do with a dog. In any case, we can’t change what was, but, hopefully, we can change what’s going to be. If you’re thinking of adopting, don’t let this myth scare you away. Your shelter dog will probably need a little more TLC because he’s probably been through a lot, but he may also be way more appreciative that you cared enough to take him home.
If you’re looking to adopt and don’t know where to start, Petfinder is a great place to begin. They have lists of shelter dogs from coast to coast. You can search by, breed, age group, and sex. The website also has tons of valuable articles and content.
19. All breeders are irresponsible.
Myth: After talking about shelter dogs, I felt it necessary to touch onto the subject of buying a dog. I don’t usually delve into anything controversial on this blog, but I felt I would be remiss not to add this. I don’t quite know how, when, or why breeders have become the devil. Responsible breeders and breed clubs maintain a vested interest in the health and welfare of a breed. They work to make sure that quality standards are maintained. Breeders and breed clubs were actually some of the first rescuers.
I would definitely advise not buying a dog from any backyard breeder, pet store, or classified ad like Craigslist. Responsible breeders do not sell their dogs to pet stores or on Craigslist. But if you want a certain breed of purebred dog, and want a puppy, you should never be made to feel like you’re doing something wrong. A good place to begin a search is at the AKC website. You can find breeder referrals, all kinds of breed information, articles, and advice. It should also be noted that the AKC has been the go-to resource for all things dog since 1884.
20. Dog is man’s best friend.
Fact: You bet he his. It turns out that the research is in. Studies have shown that oxytocin, also known as the bonding hormone, is not only at work in us humans, but it has its effects on Fido as well. Just as a mother looks into her newborn infant’s eyes and bonds, that same hormonal response has been documented to happen between dog parent and dog. According to sciencemag.org, canine cognition expert Brian Hare of Duke University said:
“It’s an incredible finding that suggests that dogs have hijacked the human bonding system.”

Maxwell x MC - A Playlist
Background Info: “When his arms lace around us, it’s as if the ballroom is set on fire.” After three months of wrestling with myself to make a playlist that would do this boy justice, I’m so excited to share this with you all. ✨ Click on each song title for the link. I highly recommend listening while looking at the visuals, lyrics, and analysis. 😉
You can find Drake x MC here and Zig x MC here.
1) “She’s American” The 1975 A youthful, atmospheric alt rock ode to fleeting moments and foreigners.
A big town Synthetic apparitions of not being lonely ----- Oh, she's dancing, enthralling, I guess I gotta wait my turn I said, “Don't fall in love with the moment.” She said, “I've got a lot to learn.” ----- There's no more water in this city But be careful or you'll drown You think you've got it figured out ----- And we're socially relevant, she’s American
New York comes alive in the night, brimming with the adrenaline and anticipation of what’s next. Meeting the waitress with the beaming smile and sparkling eyes is a most appreciated welcome.
When we step out the door with hair loose around our shoulders and face flushed, he can’t help but think that America truly is a breath of fresh air. Away from the darkened memories of home, he allows himself let his mind, unrestrained, roam over the possibilities.
Even when he secures his own fate, as the palace moves closer in the airplane window, he still thinks of that night, painted indigo by our smile.
2) “Roxanne” Chase Atlantic A magnetic pop rock anthem to desperation and young love. Partially inspired this fic: “The sunlight, it scatters.”
I don't ever wanna let you down No, I just want to kiss your lips in the rain You know I'll pull you closer if you start to drown, drown ----- And now it's burning my mind That you left me inside With your lips and your thighs You pull them closer to mine ----- Roxanne I think we should go but I'm not sure enough
When his arms lace around us, it’s as if the ballroom is set on fire. As we twirl about the floor and his hands trace slow patterns on our waist, we finally understand the magic of fairytales. How it feels to be swept away into another world.
Too soon, though, his deep blue gaze skirts away from us. His hands are up, his eyes shadowed with doubt and something else, longing. Before we can summon an apology, an explanation, his mask slips on. In a flash of regret, we’re whisked away into the arms of the prince. All he can do is stare at our retreating frame, and try to forget the warmth of our skin.
3) “The Saltwater Room” (Ocean Eyes Version) Owl City A wistful, sweet electronica duet to beachside dreaming and shy lovers.
All my islands have sunk, in the deep And I can hardly relax or even oversleep But I feel warm with your hand in mine When we walk along the shoreline I guess we'll never know, why sparrows love the snow We'll turn out all of the lights and set this ballroom aglow ----- Time together isn't ever quite enough When you and I are alone, I've never felt so at home What will it take to make or break this hint of love? Only time, only time
There is a sweet innocence to the little sparks in between us. He’s rendered speechless when we step out of the changing room; we shyly admit that the few moments we share have meant everything to us.
Even when surprise, reproach, flickers across his sunburned face, our smile wavers only a little.
As we lay back against the sand with enough distance to pretend that the burning heat comes from the sun, we close our eyes. The ocean air whisks away the rigidity of palace duties, leaving nothing but the taste of serenity and stillness.
4) “Good Girls” LANY A euphoric electro indie-pop song that evokes summer nights and chances.
Dancing on the line of a dangerous love You could break me overnight But there's no one like us Insatiably insane Equally exchanged ----- Throw it all away cause you do what you want ----- I know my way around your heart Don't start thinking, “Things have kinda changed. They're different from what they are.”
Spurred by the electric beat and the freedom of our night out, we stride over to Maxwell. His effortless confidence on the dance floor, paired with the teasing grins that he saves for us, gives us the courage to close the distance a bit more.
As we laugh and spin around in his arms, it feels as if we’re home again. Seeing our favorite guy thriving in his element lights the whole room up.
Our steps and smiles grow brighter as the night goes on.
5) “Cherry” Luna Shadows An airy, soaring dream-pop tune that aches for a relationship that cannot be. Inspired this fic: “The Time it Took to Fall”
I’m hanging from your lips, dancing in your stillness While you're killing this — But only say the words and I’ll be yours. ----- All my friends say: “stop wasting your days on a runaway — Never mind the time it took to fall” ----- Cause darling, if you call me, I'll come running Just let me turn out all the lights In the dead of night Cause I'm your lovely Burning for my turn to be your one and your only
Holding him is elusive. The dismay on his face, at our confession that we’ve strayed from the Prince, hits us as hard as rejection. But it’s only when Maxwell steers quickly around our questions and stops us from getting too close, that the ache in our chest threatens to spill over.
He refuses to see the truth—that we are not searching for the perfect lover or ending scene, but him. It’s not the promise of a future that we ask for; it’s today. And that, already, is too much for him to give.
As the glassy smile stretches across his face, we hurry away, shrinking our hope before we say too much again.
That night, Maxwell dreams of unspoken promises and faceless dance partners.
6) “Changes” Mutemath A whirring, electro-rock number to lonely reflections and towering doubts.
You pay for the right, but what is there? When every place in the world is all built up And every space in the herd is all filled up I can hear all the obsolete From a landfill, singing out I'm just suffering from changes Locked outside for good Paper cut by turning pages Sitting under dust cause I'm not understood
Desire, once set afire, cannot be doused so easily—as Maxwell soon discovers. His attempts to quell it only create more flame, and more frantic attempts to cover up the growing blaze. As tensions rise, his practiced responses and avoidance turn harsh. He cuts us off, snaps at his brother, and for the first time in weeks, gazes at us with unbridled longing in our room. For once, he does not hide. After all, letting the want surge through his veins is a welcome respite from everything he’s done wrong—from the fire that he is sure will burn down this entire, weary house.
7) “Roman Holiday” Halsey A nostalgic, synth pop ballad to youthful escapades and a love that can’t quite get the timing right.
Late December with my heart in my chest and the clouds of my breath Didn't know where we were running to But don't look back ---- I imagine the tears in your eyes The very first night I'll sleep without you ----- We'll be looking for sunlight Or the headlights Till our wide eyes burn blind ----- And our heart's gone And the timing's never right But for now let's get away On a Roman holiday
It’s supposed to be an ending. Yet that night, we dart out of the ballroom with him, giggling like teenagers. Our fears of getting caught are thrown to the wind in more than one way.
Standing but a few inches shy of us, in the hallway where this whole story began, Maxwell commits our breathless laughter to memory. It strikes him that after all this time, looking at us still feels the same way as that first magical night in New York.
As we press our cheek to his and sense the longing in his heavy sighs, in the burning gaze that he still forces away from us, we can’t help but that this is not quite what we expected.
No, it’s a million times better. We’ll drink this secluded moment in until the end. (Until the next one takes us away again.)

The Good Boston Bruins The Bad Toronto Maple Leafs The Ugly Canadiens Montreal T-Shirt
I didn’t make a nuisance of myself, not until the The Good Boston Bruins The Bad Toronto Maple Leafs The Ugly Canadiens Montreal T-Shirt end, anyway, and I never outstayed my welcome, not while there was still a welcome to be outstayed; but I was kind and sincere and thoughtful and devoted and I remembered things about her and I told her she was beautiful and bought her little presents that usually referred to a conversation we had had recently. None of this was an effort, of course, and none of it was done with any sense of calculation: I found it easy to remember things about her, because.

I didn’t think about anything else, and I really did think she was beautiful, and I would not have been able to prevent myself from buying her little presents, and I did not have to feign devotion. The The Good Boston Bruins The Bad Toronto Maple Leafs The Ugly Canadiens Montreal T-Shirt was no effort involved. So when one of Charlie’s friends, a girl called Kate, said wistfully one lunchtime that she wished she could find somebody like me, I was surprised and thrilled. Thrilled because Charlie was listening, and it didn’t do me any harm, but surprised because all I had done was act out of self-interest. And yet this was enough, it seemed, to turn me into someone desirable. Weird. And, anyway, by moving to London.

I had made it easier to be liked by girls. At home, most people had known me, or my mum and dad — or had known somebody who knew me, or my mum and dad — when I was little, and consequently I’d always had the The Good Boston Bruins The Bad Toronto Maple Leafs The Ugly Canadiens Montreal T-Shirt uncomfortable feeling that my boyhood was about to be exposed to the world. How could you take a girl out for an underage drink in a pub when you knew you had a scout uniform still hanging in your closet? Why would a girl want to kiss you if she knew (or knew somebody who knew) that just a few years before, you had insisted on sewing souvenir patches from the Norfolk Broads and Exmoor on your anorak? There were pictures all over my parents’ house of me with big ears and disastrous clothes, sitting on tractors.

While the supporters of Everton played the songbook, their side grew in authority. It was also a nice tying run, as Gylfi Sigurdsson worked the ball wide for Theo Walcott.
The former winger of Arsenal drove in and delivered a fine rule with a slider in the 69th minute to score his fifth goal in nine games against Tottenham
Everton passed quickly front. Sigurdsson whipped in the corner, Michael Keane drove mighty over Ben Davies and walked to the ground.
Never before had Everton taken the ball ahead of Tottenham restored parity. Christian Eriksen sent a clinical free kick around the Everton wall and snuggled into the bottom corner of the Jordan Pickford goal.

Music I Liked In 2016
Every year I reflect on the pop culture I enjoyed and put it in some sort of order.
There was a study published a little while back that found 33 is the average age people stop keeping up with new music – and 2016 is when I turned 33. It’s kind of a bummer, but I know for a fact that I listened to less music this year. Some of this has more to do with outside factors – now working from home, I no longer have a daily commute to pop in the earbuds and with the recent podcast boom, my work hours are mostly spent with those on in the background. But I know my personal taste (alt and indie rock) continues to diverge from the general pop landscape, which I do have less and less interest in. This year, I’m down to 10 recommendations rather than my normal 15. Though I gave many other new albums a listen or two, I found myself really returning to the same key releases over and over again. So maybe quality trumps quantity this year? Or maybe I’m just getting old and lame:
10. Integrity Blues – Jimmy Eat World
A personal favorite band that’s spent the past decade putting in steady work with varied success, Jimmy Eat World returns to the form of their best records with Integrity Blues. Opener “You With Me” would be right at home on Bleed American or Futures, and the album charges on from there with lead single “Sure and Certain.” The back half contains moments of sublime beauty including “The End is Beautiful” and the elegiac but resolute closer “Pol Roger.”
9. California – Blink-182
Entertainment Weekly named this one of the worst albums of the year, so your mileage may vary. I, for one, enjoy the pop-punk savvy of Blink, and their new record provides the same rush their music did in high school – even without Tom Delonge on board. There’s nothing ground-breaking here, just a solid set of guitar-driven songs with plenty of “Whoa-oh-oh” choruses to go around.
8. Hope – Strumbellas
Canadian folk pop outfit Strumbellas have been around for several years but broke out with their 2016 album on the strength of lead single “Spirits.” The rest of Hope follows a similarly engaging template of joyful sing-along choruses laced with lyrical undercurrents of fatalism.
7. Home of the Strange – Young the Giant
The latest album from Young the Giant marks a sonic evolution, finding the band expanding their musical template without losing the distinct energy, rhythm or catchiness of previous works. Lyrically, the songs reflect the perspective of the band members’ experiences as immigrants and foreign nationals growing up in America, which couldn’t be more relevant at this moment.
6. One Wild Life: Spirit – Gungor
This year Gungor released two full-length records, the second and third parts of their One Wild Life trilogy. While Body is also worthwhile, it’s Spirit that I find myself returning to most often. From the ebullient opening salvo of “Magic” to the driving purpose of “Wonder” to the inclusive invitation of “We Are Alive,” the record reflects the deep journey of faith Michael and Lisa have been on. My personal high point is “Kiss the Night,” which somehow manages to expose the evils of oppression and be a soaring evocation of hope, all while giving way to an incredibly danceable synth beat.
5. Songs For the Late Night Drive Home – Anchor & Braille
The latest release from Anberlin frontman Stephen Christian’s other project is heavy with atmosphere, evoking neon lights refracted through late night haze. Gauzy synthpop that sinks its hooks deeper with each listen, the album is perfect for introspective evenings or the come down from a night out.
4. Big Mess – Grouplove
The world could use more upbeat rock music like Grouplove’s. Thankfully Big Mess joined the canon this year, brimming with bright hooks and a undeniable sense of joy. “Welcome to Your Life,” “Good Morning” and “Don’t Stop Making It Happen” are among the album’s many highlights.
3. Coloring Book – Chance the Rapper
Okay, so every once in awhile I am in step with the culture. Chance’s third mixtape is a joyous celebration of life, faith and his hometown of Chicago. “Angels” became a favorite upon its release in late 2015 and the accompanying album lived up to expectations in a major way.
2. Painting of a Panic Attack – Frightened Rabbit
Scotland’s Frightened Rabbit returned with another album of anthemic catharsis, exorcising demons of self-medication and failed relationships through soaring melodies. Titles like “Death Dream,” “I Wish I Was Sober” and “An Otherwise Disappointing Life” give you an idea of what you’re in for lyrically, but I promise the execution is less depressing than it sounds. Another album that was on repeat throughout the year.
1. Real Emotion – Paper Route
Nashville’s Paper Route has long been a favorite of mine, but their third full-length album is their best yet: an indie pop masterpiece that ranges from frenetic energy (“Writing on the Wall,” “Chariots”) to introspective balladry (“Balconies,” “Real Emotion”) and points in between. The haunting “Vanisher” continues their tradition of beautiful and heart-rending closing tracks, capping an album I haven’t stopped playing since its release in September.
