Get to know THOMAS LUNE who’s TWENTY-TWO years old and a SENIOR in college majoring in HISTORY. He is from CORONA and is often times mistaken for CHANCE PERDOMO while others say he reminds them of TOM from STAR VS. THE FORCES OF EVIL.
Headcanons
Tom definitely has a soft spot for his friends. He’s very protective of them and he feels lost without them.
He loses a lot of confidence when he’s not angry and not around his friends. Like he doesn’t know what he’s supposed to be doing. He has some secret insecurities that he’d rather not share with others.
While Tom isn’t unhappy with his life, he goes back and forth with the attention he gets from it at times. Sometimes he likes to pull the ‘don’t you know who i am?’ card, but other times, he’d just like to be out and about and not have to worry about any of it.
The only issue with all the new people coming to Corona is he’s not a fan of how claustrophobic some places have gotten.
Tom knows he’s into some weird things, and he’s okay with that. From his taste in music to fashion to movies. Some might call it intense or creepy--he’s pretty sure he’s heard the term Satanic once--Tom still likes what he likes.
Growing up in a wealthy, powerful family, Tom went to a lot of formal events and cotillions. So, he’s gotten to be a pretty good dancer over the years.
He does a lot for his friends. He feels like the money he does have should be used to have fun with them and also to do things for them.
He went through a rebellious stage--some might say he’s still going through it at times-- though, when he was younger, he would set things on fire at times, just to watch them burn. He’s gotten over this for the most part, but he does still think fire is an interesting element.
He’s still not perfect, and he knows he’s far from it, but Tom is working hard to become a better version of himself.
He has a few bad habits like smoking and occasionally drinking. Just little things that help him calm his nerves. He’s trying to get better about it, but there are still some things that get him to that point.
He’s close with his parents. More his mother. In his mind it’s not because she’s his biological parent, just that she gets him more. But he does wonder sometimes if that’s why she does.
Tom can be prone to jealousy, though again, its something he’s trying to work on. That’s not as easily fixed as his anger though. And his jealousy can often spark up his temper.
He can come across as childish at times, especially when he doesn’t get his way.
Tom is studying history in order to be a better royal. He hopes to one day be what his parents expect of him.
One of the things he’s most interested in studying is religion; he thinks it’s interesting to see all the different things people believe in.
Fun Facts
Tom has a therapy rabbit to help him control his anger. His name is Marshmallow and Tom loves him very much.
Tom has a motorcycle that he did get to spite his dad for saying it was dangerous, which is clear because he’s not the best at riding it.
Tom spends a lot of his free-time playing video games and ping-pong. He can get pretty competitive at times and may even be considered a sore loser.
Tom has lots of piercings. Both his ears are pierced, he has second holes on his lobes, a cartilage piercing on his right ear and an industrial on his left. His right eyebrow is pierced, he has a septum piercing that he probably wears the least. And we’re gonna just be honest his nipples are also pierced (he usually just wears a bar)
He loves boy bands, but he doesn’t let most people know that.
Powers
Tom loves having fire powers but he’s not great at keeping them secret, mostly because they’re heavily tied to his emotions.
He’s trying to get better at controlling them, but that comes along with controlling his anger, which has been a struggle for years.
He does like to burn things for fun though. He is, at his core, kinda a pyromaniac. Always has been and this is--forgive my pun-- just fuel to that fire.
Tattoos
Tom has a lot of tattoos, some given to him by friends, some given by himself, and some he got professionally done.
Devil horns on his left wrist given to him by Star.
Stick and pokes scatter up his right arm: 1 2 3 4
Half sleeve on his left forearm
A tattoo on his ribcage
A tattoo he got on his shoulder while dating Star
On his left thigh
First stick and poke he gave himself on his ankle
Behind his right elbow going almost all the way up his upper arm
On his left calf
on his chest over his heart
Connections
Star Butterfly - One of the most serious relationships he’s ever had. They broke up because of his anger issues and Tom struggles almost all the time because of it. He’s never been great with his feelings, but he did love Star and a huge part of him still does but he won’t tell her he still has feelings for her--like true deep emotional romantic feelings--because he worries that he’s still too temperamental and that he isn’t better than he was.
Marco Diaz - A close friend of his. Well, sort of friend. Tom thinks their friends. Sure he teases Marco and is maybe not always the nicest to him, but they have a lot in common and he does really enjoy hanging out with him.
Barrel Bordes - He knows the guy and has gotten into a fight with him on at least one occasion. He knows he messes around with Star and Tom just can’t control his anger and jealousy since he feels like Barrel is a worse version of the same type of asshole that he is.
Mabel Pines - One of Star’s friends that quickly became one of his friends. She’s wild and fun to be around. She’s one of the only people who has put glitter on him and he can’t be mad at her for it. The flower stick and poke he has on his arm is in honor of her. Also he playfully flirts with her at times.
Jackie Lynn Thomas - One of the coolest people he’s ever met. He’s almost jealous of how cool she is but he would never admit that. She’s the kind of laid back that he wish he was.
Pacifica Northwest - An ex of his that he got together with as a rebound after Star. He was definitely the asshole in that relationship and was just using her to move on and really didn’t care about her feelings in it all.
Wanted Connections
Friends - Even though he won’t admit it, Tom is always in the market for some friends. They can be acquaintance like friends or best friends, it doesn’t matter. Just people who are patient enough to put up with his bullshit.
Flings/Hookups - Tom is very open to open relationships. He can like a lot of people at the same time and does enjoy either one time things or casual fwb situations.
Exes - Tom is notoriously an asshole at times so it’s likely that he has a fair share of exes where things have not gone so smoothly.
Romance - someone who has a crush on him, or someone he has a crush on that goes deeper than physical attraction. He gets a little weird when he knows he has emotional feelings for someone and he’s trying to be better at that, so if you’re in the market for an awkward angry pyromaniac, do I have the boy for you.
Enemies - Okay so enemies might be a strong word, but people he doesn’t like. Tom has a long list of people that piss him off and perhaps this person is just one of them or, like Barrel, they’ve done something that grinds his gears at a more personal level.
And anything else - If there’s something not listed here that you think Tom would work for with your muse please let me know! I am open to almost any idea out there.
#about#headcanons#will update as needed#// and after what#over a year?#here is an intro/about post for tom

Tales From A Christmas Carol(s)
I work props at a local amateur theatre, and we just finished our run of A Christmas Carol - 19 shows in just under two weeks, massive cast of both adults and children. I was there for 15 of the performances, plus rehearsals. I’ll miss the cast and crew very much - wonderful people, the lot of them - but I never want to hear a word about ghosts and making merry and Tiny-bloody-Tim ever again.
Here’s some stories that the audience didn’t get to see:
So the first thing I have to talk about is the Cursed Prop. Here he is, at first dress rehearsal:
Someone in the cast named him Dead Tom. He stayed on stage right, where I worked, and played the role of Scrooge’s corpse during a Christmas Yet To Come scene (hidden under a blanket, luckily for the audience). We all hated Dead Tom for being the scariest part of the whole production - except the kids, who were oddly entranced by him. I once watched one reverently stare at him, and then reach forward to gently caress his face. Spooky as hell. As the show went on, and he had to be dragged about every night, he got a bit worse for wear, and by the final performance looked like this:
Someone (*cough* me) accidentally kicked him in the face during the final rehearsal, which is why that dent is there. Surprisingly, doing this didn’t doom the show by unleashing an ancient evil. I suspect it instead explains the UK general election result. Sorry, everyone
Working props can be really fun because unlike a lot of other backstage jobs, you get to spend a lot of time with the actors - you come to personally rely on each other, which leads to a weird, but special bond. Like the girl who played Belle (Scrooge’s ex-girlfriend), who relied on me to help her with a quick change at the end of Act 1 - I had to button a cape around her neck, which is really difficult to do under pressure (I’ve always admired quick changes, but now I am in absolute reverence of some famous ones having experienced the pressure of it first hand). I am very grateful she trusted me with the task - and also quite surprised I never accidentally groped her, considering how often my hands were frantically moving about in that area
However - actors are also useless and cannot ever be trusted with anything, it must be said. We had this plate of (real!) jellies that went on stage for a party scene, it looked like this:
(They look better on stage). I would cover them with a sheet of foil, and a note reading ‘DO NOT TOUCH’, as they were fairly delicate. The first night, the note went missing. I later found it on the other side of the stage, meaning some one must have carried it across. And it also means that some smart-arse touched the DO NOT TOUCH sign. Never found out who it was
On the last night, I figured they knew the rules by now. I didn’t have to cover up the jellies, they’d seen the sign for two weeks, I’d be throwing them away in an hour anyway - I could trust them to leave them alone for one more act. I leave them out, turn around for five seconds, and turn back to discover the actors taking it in turns to SLAP the jellies
Actors are despicable creatures and I hate them (I don’t <3)
There’s always one prop the actors consistently forget to return. In this show, there was a set of pocket watches that people would constantly leave in costume pockets. At one point we had three shows in a row where a different person forgot each time. This was perhaps my punishment for getting bored in rehearsals and setting all the clock hands to 6 and 9
We had a few props that were spares, in case something went missing or got broken. One was a bowler hat. On the last night, as it clearly wouldn’t be needed, I wore it the whole show, just for fun. Someone told me I looked ‘effortlessly cool’, which is the only time that has ever been said about me
There were a lot of kids in this show, and they were really sweet, and often more well-behaved than the grown-ups. I had to skip both sets of performances on the Thursdays for other commitments, and one of them told me he missed me while I was gone, and my soul ascended
Another time, we were doing a matinee for a school group, who were being very rowdy. One of the kids came over to me, gestured in the direction of the audience, and said ‘I hate children’. I nodded and handed him his prop, while internally losing it because sweetheart, you are children
That same day, the actor playing Christmas Past lost his wig - he had to walk through a curtain, and it got pulled off. Cue laughter from audience. He handled it very well, though. The wig wasn’t used again in any performance after that, which I think was actually for the best, with the costume and make-up he actually kind of looked spookier without it
Another school group wolf-whistled Scrooge at the end - kids are wild
I had to spend a lot of time coming back and forth from the theatre’s props room due to those jellies I mentioned earlier needing to stay in the fridge when not in use. Props rooms are where all the most recently or soon to be used props are kept (we’ve got like five other rooms and a whole basement for stuff that’s not in use), and they’re the best. You never know what you’re going to find, and you spot something new every time. It can range from weird:
To creepy:
To very funny if you’re on your tenth performance of A Christmas-goddamn-Carol and you barely slept last night and you have a highly immature sense of humour:
I would watch the absolute hell out of a Night At The Museum spin-off set in a theatre props storage
Being an amateur theatre, everyone involved with these shows is, well, an amateur. A lot of people still like to jokingly call themselves professionals, though, usually under one of two circumstances - the first is when no one really feels like being there, but we’ve got to do it, we’re professionals, *self-deprecating laughter*, and the second when someone gets caught doing something silly
For me, the latter happened a few times during my favourite part of my role in this show - decorating the scooter. For some reason, this version of A Christmas Carol featured a boy on a scooter who would ride through various scenes. The scooter was then gifted to Tiny Tim at the end (I don’t get it, but whatever). Throughout most of the show, it was just a scooter, but before the last time it came on, I would decorate it like this:
Now, it had to be ridden across the stage, so it was very important that the decorations didn’t all come off. So of course, I would be required to make certain of that, surely? And what better way to do so than by riding it around the back corridors while everyone’s on stage? Right? It’s a very professional thing to do, is how I explained it every time someone caught me
Scooters are fun and more adults should have them
At the end of the show, the whole cast is on stage and ‘snow’ falls from the ‘sky’, and everyone cheers as the curtain falls. One matinee, the snow failed, and we spent the wait until the evening show unsure whether they’d be able to fix it. When it did fall at the end of the performance, the cheers the actors let out were, unbeknownst to the audience that night, actually 100% genuine - I could hear the difference, having listened to it every night for a week. Which was why I spent the entirety of bows that evening silently laughing my absolute arse off
To be a little cheesy - these past few weeks have been some of the best of my life. If anyone out there has just moved, or is moving to a new city, and is looking to socialise a bit, you could do worse than joining up with a local theatre. Best case scenario, you end up like me, and have a great (if repetitive) time with a group of lovely people. And worst case? You at least get really good at quoting long sections of plays. Who wouldn’t want to be friends with someone who can do that?

Quan Zhi Gao Shou / The King’s Avatar Manhua (Chapters 6-10)
Onto the next five chapters! Thank you to everyone who read my weird ramblings in the first part!
There will probably be some overlap between this liveblog and my liveblog of the novel, but I’ll try to minimize it.
Chapter 6: Thief Shouting Thief
How nice of you to offer to help dry clean his coat, Chen Guo!
xD Ye Xiu’s “Oh...” reaction.
Ah, so he actually said this through audio. I couldn’t tell when I read this part in the novel. That makes it funnier, him saying it with that flat expression. And Sleeping Moon’s “Hello my ASS” comment haha.
Decided to live up to that ‘shameless’ label, I see. The funny thing about this being in-game is that you can have that comedic moment of Sleeping Moon pointing up at the banner and have it not be a sort of fourth wall thing you’re supposed to ignore for the sake of the story. Like, the notification can actually be on screen here.
Did you not learn your lesson, like you really think you can screw him over, haha.
The names aren’t as fun this time around, though: Drifting Water, Sunset Clouds, Seven Fields. I think these guys have more experience than the previous party though, so perhaps that is meant to reflect that.
lol this time, no one is fooled. I love the chibis. Everyone’s expressions are really great throughout this thing, actually.
Actually it’d be better to say: use him for hard labor, then kick him out.
I LOVE THE HONESTY. AND THE IRONY.
You actually made your in-game avatar yawn. I know it’s a first person game and this is technically just an expression of the characters in real life for the benefit of the readers, but.
There was no way to represent the hilarity of these panels without screenshotting them all. Their progression through the cave, each expression changing with each panel, the little “being careful” vs. “vigorous strides”. I love how they’re so on edge, and Ye Xiu is looking bored. And Sleeping Moon looks like a scary imp.
I need to make icons of all the funny expressions made in this manhua or something.
lol after their wild theorizing on how he could be that good or pull off those combos, they then go “you know what, we shouldn’t piss this guy off” to being in awe of his skill.
Chapter 7: A Showdown in Spider Cave
T-the little chibi characters trying to climb up giant Lord Grim...it’s so cute.
LITTLE MOON MOON. I actually remember this from the animation, but it’s still hilarious.
AH. It’s Blue Brook Guild’s arrival on scene...They’re half the reason I got so confused with all the names in the first place. Their names all follow a theme and they’re too similar urgh. Ok. I’ll get it straight this time.
Pretty boy here is Blue River, yes?
Lol, DRAMATIC FIRST KILL CLAIMING SHOT--
Oh, never mind someone beat you to it!
lol someone who’s not freaking out about it right this moment. I liked Blue River in the animation, he was a fun character.
Chapter 8: Seizing first kill by ten seconds’ lead
They needed 11 ellipses for the silence that befell them after they were done killing the boss.
And back with the ragtag team with Lord Grim...they’re singing his praises up the wall.
Poor Little Moon Moon. Why do I keep screencapping him? His super dejected expressions are gold, that’s why.
He’s a far cry from his confident, smug first appearance:
remember when he had some class?? xD
Ah, I remember when everyone started calling him Little Moon Moon too xD I love how no one even listens when he threatens them to stop calling him that.
We’re all adults here. Don’t be childish. It’s just a game. Don’t let this upset you.
words of wisdom to live by. too bad a lot of people are so horrible at this irl.
Blue River’s manhua version is so pretty...I have a weakness for bishounen characters, ok. Even if he’s currently just a character in a game and I don’t know what his real life character looks like.
OH GOD. it’s the nice ones that snap first.
I wish they would decide whether they want to censor curse words or not...I’m not going crazy, am I? It was spelled out some chapters ago.
CHEN GUO. “You don’t want to live anymore!?” She went to sleep, got up in the morning when it’s nice and sunny, and he’s still playing...Furthermore, he’s teamed up with the guy who trash talked him and everyone is willingly giving up drops to him. No wonder she’s bewildered.
I mean, it’s stopped absolutely no one before, but yes he has a point.
“You not only transformed your foes, you made them your followers as well!?”
The madness and shenanigans of the 10th server are just beginning.
What a handsome Ye Xiu. You do not look like you pulled an all-nighter. You should be dead on your feet.
But aww, Chen Guo fixed up the spare room for him. She did feel bad about it earlier, I remember from the novel.
Uh, is he taking his shirt off to sleep in the middle of winter...? he didn’t bring a change of clothes or anything either.
Chapter 9: I was exiled to to the Qin Mountains in the autumn wind
What’s with the chapter title this time around? I think I’m missing so many references here.
The press conference and announcement of Ye Qiu’s retirement was a strong moment in the animation, and it’s presented nicely here as well. The look on Ye Xiu’s face is particularly painful, as he stands alone in the back of the room essentially watching the last 7 years of his life summed up on screen.
As well as Chen Guo being absolutely devastated that her idol retired. Haha, he’s still coming out right and telling her his identity, but she doesn’t believe him.
The irony in asking if he wants tissues to cry over Ye Qiu’s retirement, and he says “Why would I? How could I ever cry?” when he really has the most cause to cry out of anyone at that moment.
For someone who was never into publicity and stuff, he has a suuper charismatic smile apparently. Look at that thing.
omg yeah I remember now, Sleeping Moon being a fan of Ye Qiu and depressed that he retired. Must be so awkward for Ye Xiu.
Speaking of awkward, he feels awkward having to keep relying on the others, in his words ‘free labor’ lol. I don’t think his feelings were so clear in the animation.
Wow, these skeletons are well-drawn. And wonderfully gross.
Chapter 10: At the blue bridge, you returned to Changan with the spring snow
Had to take this page directly, I wanted to get a better look at all the character designs. Aaah, I really love the designs. All the little details~
Ooh, so this is where the manhua works in its explanation of the weapon types. Nice little graphics to go with it too.
Was this the best image to pick to go along with the idea of ‘professional research facility to create silver weapons’...?
So Blue River is Blue Bridge Spring Snow, but in the 10th server. Thaaat’s not confusing at all. (his name is a reference to the chapter title which is a line from a poem, right?)
T-the Cleric’s name is Bound Boat...
I didn’t recognize her at first either. HAHA Ye Xiu was also surprised.
I do like Chen Guo’s explanation why she doesn’t think Ye Qiu should retire, she’s quite perceptive and analytical. Even though this is her idol, she sees that his performance hasn’t been good and that was probably why Excellent Era used him as a scapegoat over the years (apparently more than once).
Once again, the designs are so nice. And we get a little sneak peek of the real people behind the characters.
lol Ye Xiu not listening to Chen Guo at all. SHE WAS ONTO SOMETHING, TOO.
“But that machine’s the server!” “I’m the boss.” hehe Chen Guo is too much.
“I forgot to read the guide.”
oh no. so much for mr. textbook player.

A Year in Review 2017
New Post has been published on http://sorcery101.net/news/a-year-in-review-2017/
A Year in Review 2017
Hi everyone,
So it’s the end of the year. I have been looking back over the year to make my goals for next year. Last year I posted my goals on Patreon for the highest backer level. It’s a level that no one ever backed at. I don’t know if the price was too high or just general lack of interest. But I liked writing those posts so as long as I have time, I think I’ll start posted some edited versions of them free on my site each month. Before I started doing that I thought I’d post a public behind the scenes wrap up.
2017 was rough and exhausting. That’s true for a lot of people.
I tried to stick to my professional and personal goals anyway. I also tried a few experiments to see how things would work out.
Last year, I had a few business/income related goals. I wanted to focus on building my Patreon, my newsletter, and my store. I wanted to get rid of ads and do less cons. Ads are ugly and hard to track down bad ones. Cons I want to do less of because they are exhausting to me. I don’t think I’ve ever got creative burn out but I definitely get hussle/promo burn out. It’s been taking me longer and longer to recover from cons. So anywhere that I can get money which isn’t from cons if great.
A lot of my site redesign was to push those things.
My newletter is I think the most successful of those goals. I got a good few hundred folks signing up from my website and a bunch of folks signing up after my kickstarter. Next year I’m gonna try to focus on making it better. I few people asked for highlights from the blog here as well as promo. But I’m still taking suggestions if anyone wants to leave them in the comic. Right now it’s just promo but if I don’t have promo that month I end up not knowing what to write.
The shop getting pushed more, I think it did better than last year but I haven’t crunched the numbers yet.
Patreon didn’t go very well this year. I wanted to get more patrons there to mostly get rid of ads. I ended up making less money on patreon than before. I used to charge weekly and thought switching to monthly would help get more people on board, but I never ended up attracting enough people to make up for the difference. I tired a few different things like business posts like this one, sketch requests, and streams. At first I was posting my early comics in a big PDF but then was told more frequent posts get peoples attention more. I also tried to post more art on there. None of those really enticed people to jump on. I don’t know if people just don’t like my stuff. If I’m just not cut out for promoting a long term thing rather just doing a focused push for one big project. Either way I’m feeling pretty discouraged and after last weeks debacle with the fee change is leaving me kinda sour on Patreon. In 2018 I’m gonna try to focus on other stuff that might pay off more.
I was looking for more work from publishers and companies in 2017 too. Or more working smarter not harder with companies. That didn’t pay off in 2017 but it get me some cool stuff lined up for 2018.
But for now it looks like I’m gonna still be hitting up 10 or more cons a year.
On the somewhat creative goal and somewhat personal, I spent a lot of of this year making sure I kept up with my comic reading. It can be easy to not keep up with reading new comics and know what is out there when you are busy trying to make comics. I buy most of my comics at conventions but I got an ipad pro to be a portable digital drawing tool so I’ve been reading a lot of manga on that. But here’s some high stuff I really enjoyed and will probably write about on my blog over the coarse of next year. I read them this year but they didn’t all come out this year. The webcomics I’m just gonna link cause they are free to read but I usually just read the print collections when it comes to webcomics. So when I say I read them this year I mean the print collection.
Wilde Life by Pascalle Lepas
Agents of the Realm by Mildred Louis
The Meek by Der-shing Helmer
Feywinds by Nicole Chartrand
Check Please by Ngozi Ukazu
O Human Star by Blue Delliquanti
A Silent Voice by Yoshitoki Ōima which is about a guy trying to get forgiveness from the deaf girl he bullied in elementary school. It’s very intense and grips with complicated questions about who gets forgiven and who decides who gets that forgiveness.
Monstress by Marijorie liu and Sana Takeda. It’s a fantasy epic that is set in a matriarchal setting where magical humanoid creatures and sorceresses are at war. The main character is trying to learn more about an elder god type thing that has taken over her arm. It’s gorgeous and complicated and female focused. This might be my favorite comic right now.
Fun Family by Ben Frisch. I picked this up because I went to college which Ben. Fun Family is a fictional behind the scenes of Family Circus. It kinda odd but I liked it because it explores how a simple wholesome comic like Family Circus can be comforting when your home life is falling apart.
Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. I don’t got to tell you all what Dragon Ball is about. But I read it for the first time and really liked it. I had only seen the anime before this. It was interesting to see the source material. I thought it was a lot of fun.
Parasyte by Hitoshi Iwaki. Most anime fans know about this one too but again I read it this year. For you none anime fans alien parasites take over human hosts and replace their heads. The main character gets his hand taken over instead and he has to work with the parasite to hide from both humans and parasites. It’s an interesting mix of body horror and exploring morality.
My Hero Academia by Kohei Horikoshi. It’s about a superhero school in world where more people have superpowers and being a superhero is partly being a celebrity and partly a government job.
Space Battle Lunch Time by Natalie Riess. It’s about a cooking reality tv show in space. I was a lot of fun and very cute. It does a good job of having multiple rounds of cooking contests without getting repetitive. The main character is super charming.
Moonlighters by Katie Schenkel and Cal Moray. An all ages comic about werewolves doing magical odd jobs on their college campus.
Soupy Leave Home by Cecil Castellucci and Jose Pimenta. I picked this up because I introduced Cecil and Jose to each other. Their book is really good. It’s about a girl who disguises herself as a boy so she can run away to ride the rails as a hobo during the great depression. It’s bitter sweet and does an excellent job showing the relationship build between Soupy and her mentor on the rails.
I also liked Castoffs by MK Reed, Brain Smith, and Molly Ostertag and Letters for Lucardo by Noora Heikkilä but those both are only at volume 1 and I feel like the stuff that I’ll really want to talk about will probably happen in volume 2. My reading list is organized shortest to longest and so some have been on there for awhile. For 2018 far it’s:
As the Crow Flies by Melanie Gilman
Not Drunk Enough by Tess Stone
The Fifth Beatle by Vivek Tiwary, Kyle Baker, and Andrew C. Robinson
Vattu vol 2 by Evan Dahm
The Last Halloween by Abby Howard
East of West year 2 by Jonathan Hichman and Nick Dragotta
Drive by Dave Kellet
The Less than Epic Adventures of TJ and Amal by EK Weaver
I Am Hero by Shinsuke Sato
If you all got recommendations I’m open to em. I think it’s important to read comic if you want to improve. So while I am gearing up for my next big project I wanted to make sure knew what was out there. I have been writing about them on Patreon but I’m gonna start posting them publicly. Writing about the stuff I like is just to help me articulate what I’m looking for in stories and be more deliberate in the future. I’m intentionally not reading Marvel and DC though. So if you suggest stuff from them I’ll probably pass.
And then here are more general personal goals and experiments.
I got really unhealthy while working on Misfits of Avalon because juggling two comics isn’t super smart when when has a hard deadline. There were a few months while working on it where I basically drank ALL THE REDBULL to finish on time. I also gained 20 lbs while working on it. So a lot of 2017 was me trying to undo the damage caused by overworking.
I don’t pay a lot of attention to my weight and mostly noticed because I got faced with the choice of lose weight or buy new clothes. Excising takes more work but is cheaper. So I started biking 3 times a week and used the biking version of couch to 5k to improve. I mostly stuck with it because MK Reed was my biking buddy. We fell off a few times when con season got hectic. Then because of con season I tried to think of something that is easier to do while away. So in October after all my cons were done I gave jogging a try. I wanted to die and my throat was closing up. I couldn’t finish even half of what couch to 5k tells you to do the first day. I thought maybe I’d improve. But after no improvement for a month I went to the doctor. Turns out my lungs are all fucked up and I just didn’t know it because that was how I always breathed. Doctor gave me an inhaler which helped with running so now I can completely the first day of the program, but my none running breathing is still not as good as it should be. So I just got a different inhaler that is supposed to help with that. Otherwise I might have some expensive medical tests coming up. So fingers crossed that everything is fine.
I also tried to do some push ups at the beginning of the year. I started by doing them off my counter and then moved lower to the arm rest of my couch. But I was apparently doing them wrong so I never successfully got to doing push ups off the floor. Building muscle strength might be something I need more help with than cardio.
And while running sucks honestly the hardest thing to do was fix how bad my caffeine addiction got. I mentioned above that I drank a lot of Redbull when Misfit of Avalon deadlines got tight. Well, when I went to C2E2 last year, the time it took me to wake up, go to the airport, fly to Chicago, and get to where I was staying gave me a withdrawal headache. So less than 24 hours. I still had 2-3 months of work to do on Misfits but I made a self note that this is a problem I needed to deal with once finished. So I turned in my pages that June. Then I quit caffeine cold turkey because I’m very bad at cutting back on things. It was a miserable two weeks. But by the time SDCC rolled around I could get through a con day with only one cup (as opposed to like 6 cups).
So for health stuff in 2018, I’m gonna try to keep up the jogging and biking. Figure out what is up with my lungs. And try to get help on the upper body strength that I am lacking.

Interview with current writer-in-residence, Daniela Emminger
Daniela Emminger was born in 1975 in Upper Austria. She studied journalism & communication science in Vienna, worked as a copywriter in Berlin, and as an editor in Lithuania and Latvia. Since 2008, Daniela Emminger has lived in Vienna and works as a writer and freelance journalist. She received various scholarships and awards and is the author of several books. She was on the longlist of the Austrian Book Prize 2016 with Gemischter Satz and participated at the Festival for Literature in NYC & Washington in 2019 with her most recent novel Kafka mit Flügeln. Last autumn, her first theatre-play Zirkus. Braunau. – a political piece about the latest right-wing-populistic tendencies within Europe – was published, the book-version will follow 2020.
When did you first visit New York and what were your first impressions of this city, especially in comparison with your hometown, Vienna? What characteristics of New York do you find most appealing, especially as a writer?
My first time in New York was in March 2019 when I participated in the Festival Neue Literatur. I spent one week in the city and I really can’t find proper words to describe the atmosphere. I was thrilled. And overwhelmed with emotion. New York is sooooo fascinating from the very first second. There are all these skyscrapers, so you have to look up all the time. There are all these people and everyone is busy and heading towards something. There is this special (heart) beat you can feel in every move, in every place. For me New York is intangible. But I as a writer of course have to make things visible, audible, tangible through words. Also, a foreign place always has a strong influence on a person; the interplay of geography alters the identity of a character. It definitely makes a difference if you live and grow up in Vienna (in Europe) or New York (in the United States). Compared to New York, Vienna is a one-horse town. So I am sure that New York will change me as a person as well as a writer. It will change my way of absorbing and assimilating things, it will change my way of thinking and writing.
Before beginning your career as an author, you studied Advertising Management and Communication & Economics in Vienna – subjects that one might not immediately imagine as the educational background of an author who writes novels, plays, and short stories. How and when did you decide to become a professional author? Do you incorporate any knowledge or skills that you picked up during your studies into your writing?
It’s true that I started my career as a writer quite late in my thirties. But I already knew at the age of 14 that writing is and would be my destiny. I just felt it inside. And I realized soon that in my case the world was defined by words. It was just natural for me to write about my feelings, sorrows, aims and thoughts. Writing helped me to understand the world. I am words. And there are hundreds of untold stories inside me that will come to fruition one day. Though I grew up in a small village and in a family where becoming a writer – as a profession – was not an option. That’s why I studied something ordinary before I finally decided to quit my job in advertising. At that time I had three finished scripts in my pocket and sent them to different publishing houses. There is a point in life – and this might have to do with age and experience – when you have nothing to lose, when you don’t want to waste the rest of your life with half-hearted things.
What authors and/or works of literature have had the most influence on your career, writing, and style?
I love reading. I already devoured books when I was a child. Authors like Mira Lobe, Christine Nöstlinger were the stars of my childhood. Later on I read a lot of Thomas Bernhard, Elfriede Jelinek, also Russian Literature from Dostojewski to Tolstoi. I am a fan of Daniil Charms and Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz who are known for their surreal style. I try to read contemporary literature from colleagues like Josef Winkler, Laura Freudenthaler, Teresa Präauer as well. I think at Austrian schools and universities the literary focus lies on European literature, but of course I also read American classics from authors like Paul Auster, John Steinbeck, Mark Twain, Edgar Allan Poe, Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson.
In fact I really read a lot. The only genres I don’t like are detective/mystery stories and science fiction. And during my own writing process I have to stop reading completely, because the thoughts and the style of another author would definitely influence my own writing. At the moment I have Die New York Trilogie (City of Glass, Ghosts and The Locked Room) by Paul Auster on my bedside table.
In the works that you’ve published so far, is there an overarching theme that you want to explore or a particular question you want to answer that ties them all together? What is your creative process like and how do you come up with ideas for each novel, play, story, and essay?
In general I carry the themes that move me inside – sometimes it even takes years until they come to fruition. My work often deals with „the essentials of life“ – such as love, evanescence, transformation, courage, grief or the search for meaning. The main source of my ideas is my own experience, my own emotion and understanding of the world. Also external sources and influences – a poem I read, a conversation I hear, a person I meet – intentionally play a certain role. For example in Kafka With Wings my inspiration was based upon a number of personal losses, but also influenced by a poem called One Art by Elizabeth Bishop that I discovered at that time. I try to find a way to process these kinds of influences in my art.
I am also fond of mixing different genres. In my mind sometimes a fairy tale perfectly matches with facts and figures, with real things going on in the contemporary world. For example Kafka With Wings is a mixture of fiction and non-fiction. It is a wild and vivid journey through an invented world of imagination but at the same time it mirrors the real historical and recent situation of the foreign and mostly unknown country of Kyrgyzstan. I am hell-bent on giving birth to a story. I am fearless and uncompromising. For example, I recently finished a theatre play about Braunau, Hitler’s birthplace, and the latest right-wing populistic tendencies within Austria and Europe. It’s a political play and I had to spend several months in Braunau to do research. Now this might sound a little bit weird, but I bought myself a gorilla costume and every time I worked on the play I jumped into it. This had nothing to do with Mardi Gras, I used the costume as uniform, like a doctor his scrubs. It helped me to keep distance from the crazy Nazi stuff. Also there was plenty of space in it to lock up the right-wing populistic thoughts and tendencies. The costume enabled me to reflect on them in a safe and concentrated way. Also, gorillas – like apes in general – are very intelligent animals. I guess that the aura of the gorilla costume helped me to find a humane solution to the present and ever-increasing Nazi problem.
In your opinion and experience, what is the hardest part of the writing process? How do you overcome it?
I think being an author has a lot to do with discipline. The writing process is not a romantic one, you have to stay tuned, keep on thinking and writing day by day. I have fixed working hours, preferably in the morning from 6am to noon. Sometimes I have to throw away every single page but still the process of writing helps me to stay in motion. At some point a story gets stuck or complicated – especially when it is very complex and convoluted. Then you have to step back, do some analytic work regarding the plot, the characters, and the message in between the lines. Also research is hard work. For example it took me three years to write Kafka With Wings. After the second year I didn’t see the light at the end of the tunnel any more. I thought I ´d never finish this story. But I did. Step by step and day by day. So maybe the secret is to keep on going.
Your most recent novel, Kafka mit Flügeln (Kafka With Wings), follows an Austrian woman who embarks on a search for her long-lost, half-Kyrgyz friend from her childhood, who disappeared in his own search for his identity and origins. What was the inspiration behind this story? Why did you specifically choose Kyrgyzstan as the cultural background for the missing friend?
The idea of the story came to me some years ago in 2015. I felt I had to write about changes, losing things, loss in general. At that time I also discovered a poem by Elizabeth Bishop, called One Art, which had great influence on me. It’s about losing things, places and names and even bigger and more important things like relationships, countries or the own past, the own identity. It’s not that I hadn’t experienced any loss so far, for example my mother died in 2015, but I was luckily never involved in a war or had to flee from my country. So I was looking for a place in the world, where I – like my characters – felt completely lost: lost in translation, lost in space, even lost in evolution. And Kyrgyzstan was the perfect place.
I really knew nothing about this country, it was just a place on the map, not real for me. I didn’t speak a word of Kyrgyz or Russian. I didn’t know anybody there. It was really a big adventure for me to go there and somehow I was forced to get to know myself in a new way, to discover myself from a new perspective. And all because I wanted to share commonalities with my characters. I think that’s the way I generally work: I always have to be very close to my protagonists. I have to feel what they feel. I have to merge with them.
Also Kyrgyzstan is a very exciting and inspiring plot location. When I arrived there, I was hit by intense culture shock. But then I quickly dove into the Kyrgyz culture and the way of Kyrgyz living. For example I spent several weeks together with nomads high up in the mountains (at 4000 meters above sea level). Or I travelled through all different regions of the country (from West to East and North to South). Also I had to dive into the world of butterfly research for my book and therefore I joined a group of European lepidopterologists who were looking for rare butterfly species throughout the country. I learnt how to catch them, how to kill them technically and humanely, how to preserve them for observation and study. All these peculiarities finally became part of the story. You learn a lot about Soviet history and a foreign culture.
Without going into much detail about the story, can you explain why you chose the title Kafka with Wings?
The central theme of my book Kafka With Wings is metamorphosis. Butterflies play a central role as symbol for transformation and change. The insect goes through different stages of life until it has reached its final stage of existence. Now in my story I use this process of development in a metaphorical way: also people, things and even countries run through different stages of existence during their lifetime. They change, they become something different, and they sometimes are forced by external and internal circumstances to search for a new identity.
Kafka with Wings also references Franz Kafka, the Czech author, in the title. In fact my book is not a book about Kafka himself, he won’t appear in person in the plot, but still he has a certain influence on my writing. He and his thoughts are synonymous with change, transformation and strange things going on. Let’s consider his novel Die Verwandlung/The Metamorphosis, where his protagonist Gregor Samsa suddenly finds himself transformed into an insect. In German language we even use the word „kafkaesk“ to describe a situation or condition which is really strange and bizarre but also brilliant. So I think this is why I reference Kafka in my title.
If we may ask, what is your current/next project and what do you hope to achieve during your time as the Max Kade writer-in-residence at Deutsches Haus at NYU?
In fact I wanted to start a new project by the beginning of the year. It has to do with “homeland”, with “spiritual home”, with “home away from home”. At first I thought that the story has to take place in Aurach am Hongar, which is my birthplace and a very small village in Upper-Austria. I wanted to reflect on the special structures and relationships within a one-horse town and also write about hidden conflicts, problems and lies within a family. But then I was invited to New York and I am not sure now, if I can start this “homeland”-story here. In a way New York is the very reverse to Aurach am Hongar. But on the other hand: Is there a better place to think about your origin, your country, your identity, than somewhere far away from home? Another idea for my residency is of course to focus on New York, to walk through all the different boroughs of the city, to absorb all kind of people, conversations, impressions like a sponge, to let the city circulate in my veins, my brain, my body. This could end up as a poem, a thriller, a love story – who knows…

Caroline and Edith: A Brief Intro
I figured I don’t talk enough about the gals so I will do so here because i can’t concentrate and wanted to write about them for like a year
about: the concept of nyo characters and 2p characters is a thing in canon hetalia and the fandoms- i’m not terribly fond of 2p as its been characterized by the fandom (as sort of two dimensional ‘bad’ versions) and have only treated it jokingly thus far, but i have for whatever reason been curious about gender bending/sliding/swapping. I personally like personifications to /mean/ something and not simply give them a different gender, so I personally have thought of nyo and on occasion 2p personifications as different aspects of one city. In the case of ‘fem ed’ and ‘fem cal’, they represent former municipalities that are absorbed into existing ones. Some people do this with their nyo!characters, some people don’t, it’s just a personal preference of mine that I think gives an extra dimension and twist to just popping existing characters into different clothes. Basically, they look similar after having lived together so long (the joke being that to people outside the city they are basically the same thing) and they have a sort of adopted sibling relationship though they are not biologically related.
and now the gals
fyi i know more off the top of my head about edith because i’m a u of a alumna and grew up on the south side literally on campus so therefore a little biased :^) Do i have interest in creating nyo characters for other alberta ocs? idk - i have a slight interest but idk if i have the time or energy to invest in characters who aren’t as familiar or immediately important. It’s more a development that comes after a lot of research and local knowledge. But anyway, without further ado, here are some facts.
Edith / Fem!Edmonton / Old Strathcona / South Edmonton
History
- once an independent and successful city (Strathcona), joined Edmonton in 1912 for tax benefits.
- Now exists as Old Strathcona - most well known for being the home of the University and Whyte Ave as well as Rachel Notley’s stronghold - typically the only riding in the province to consistently vote NDP in both provincial and federal elections. Hipster central (though is slowly losing that status to Ed and 124th street on the North side).
- was given the University of Alberta to compromise between Ed/Cal, but Ed ended up getting it anyway.
- represents the area on the south side of the North Saskatchewan. As a result she has more Blackfoot heritage where Ed has more Cree heritage. Also home to a lot of Metis people who fled Red River. Really sad because Laurent Garneau’s tree just got brought down ToT
- got the railroad that ed was supposed to get because the CPR was too lazy to build a bridge. only some vague bitter feelings between her and ed over this but they’ve gotten over it - ed is making sure to hold on to the old railway tracks Just In Case.
- Fought really hard in the 1970s to keep her heritage buildings and status during a time when the city was ready to tear it all down. Still really rankled by new developments.
Looks/Personality/Interests
- round hips and buff legs, narrow torso, not-quite-flat chest. Basically shaped like a bowling pin if a bowling pin was pointy, or alternatively, shaped like the Strathcona Public Building
- always has her hair up when not at home, most usually in a bun. Cats eye glasses which she actually does use to see.
- Younger than Ed but grew up faster than him. Is still taller than him today (but only slightly). Generally more blunt, more fashionable, more open and outspoken politically, and less of a worry wart. Technically closer to Cal in age.
- cat person, tea drinker, and so many tattoos. probably piercings. i haven’t figured it out. seems to manage to eat cake at block 1912 and all the trendy instagrammable foods and drinks every day and yet has no obvious source of income. Seems to disappear into that mysterious door just off Whyte labeled “SECRET LOCATION, DO NOT ENTER” (aka a local brewery’s secret hq a close walk from the old railway station which has since been converted into a beer market). Her personal style is more rockabilly than explicitly hipster- there are a lot of retro dress shops in old Strath + tattoos + leather because Alberta
- volunteers at fringe every year and probably on a first name basis with nathan fillion. fringe/acting is her life. Has an expansive and expressive theatre ability on stage, but off it she’s just kind of ‘meh’ and indifferent and private.
- is at the farmer’s market every saturday, probably selling stuff ed has grown
- lives in an old Edwardian heritage home somewhere in Old Strath, has a fluffy white cat, bikes or takes transit everywhere.
- likes to weld weird abstract metal... things?
- Likely the one who caused the political Orange Crush for Ed, but could care less about the Orange Crush of the sporting world. Literally could not care less about hockey because of the bad riots they cause on Whyte that keep her up at night - ‘literally no amount of alcohol is going to fix this for either of us, go home’. Her sporting passion is actually basketball and roller derby, but nobody knows that because she doesn’t tell anyone. Doesn’t ride horses, (if she does, it’s English style riding), but really loved betting on them back in the day. Has a lot of FC Edmonton merch and watches soccer games, but gave up on lacrosse when the Rush moved to Saskatchewan and broke her heart. In general, she loathes organized sport and Especially the NHL, but will watch U of A Pandas/Golden Bears games because they are cheap and accessible.
- sex positive, just not interested in discussing her own sex life or those of people she knows. I tend to think of her as aroace-spectrum (i.e. sex neutral or favourable in certain contexts, not interested in long term romance. No gender preference. Doesn’t like dating people she knows/friends.) She recently started hosting Pride herself and it has been a great success. Only enters adult stores if they are cute and queer friendly.
------------------
Caroline / Fem!Calgary / Bowness / Northwest Calgary
History
- Used to be part of Cochrane Ranch in the golden age of cattle ranching. Grew up with kind of a southern belle/debutante lifestyle that hasn’t totally left her.
- Younger than Cal, grew up in the golden age of ranching and in the middle of massive immigration.
- that is, both she and calvin were raised in ranch houses learning to play croquet and polo and dressing well and having tea and so on and so forth - Caro in some ways moreso than Calvin who had previously grown up in the old NWMP fort as well and knew differently- slightly more about Calgary-the-wild/mild-west-frontier
- The ranch was later divided up into recreational parks and ice skating rinks and golf courses and houses and things - though it wasn’t part of the city, people from Calgary would come up to visit all the time by streetcar as a little mini ‘escape’. Met a lot of famous people during this period, including Fred McCall the ace wartime pilot who would fly her and Cal out to Banff for day trips
- Joined Calgary in 1964 because the nearby town of Montgomery had already done so, so why not.
- still has really strong class divides due to the history of the area
Looks / Personality / Interests
- Though she’s sort of a prairie princess in some ways, Caro really embraces the “tough flannel wearing” sort of image of western ladies who would ride all day to get to a dance in another town. She’s still very insistent on presenting herself as feminine and well to do, but she can’t shake the country image no matter how hard she may try to play big city socialite.
- Tall like Calvin, only slightly shorter than him. Freckles, more obvious and more numerous than Calvin’s. Pretty much an hourglassy figure and a little bit busty (c cup because the city’s dumb obsession with cs get it). When I draw her i have that terrible quote from Destroy All Humans stuck in my head i.e. “would you get a load of this brassiere? i could torpedo a uboat with these things!” because I guess I also think of her as a post-war suburban housewife secretly.
- Usually has her hair in a loose side braid but will attempt fancier up-dos for social events. It’s wavy and relatively long, past her shoulders. Pierced ears, likes long dangly earrings and Expensive jewelry. I tend to look at the Library when I draw her - I like the round wheely shapes from its history as an ATV shop and use those as jewelry, so its like Long and Round shapes for her body but she also has a pokey chin/nose/fingers etc like Calvin.
- she tries to keep her fashion sense in that sort of light and airy feminine zone but she still gets all her dresses and blouses from Lammles. Will Absolutely rock the full western jeans and flannel during stampede or on vacation in the mountains, but in the city she tries to keep it more urban and/or professional.
- bigger fan of sports than Edith, Extremely into hockey and is a Serious supporter of the Calgary Inferno. Only wears jerseys on game day, but has one in each colour for each team.
- her political views are slowly ~seeming~ to shift- being a typically right wing conservative stronghold was upset in the 2015 election and she now lives in an NDP riding which is Very Interesting. It was a split between NDP/Cons/WR 5:5:3 so you could argue the right-wing vote outnumbered the left wing 8:5, but it’s still Very Interesting, thanks First Past the Post. Generally like Calvin she is a True Blue Conservative, though she might lean more towards WR and he leans more Liberal (shocker, I know). But I won’t be able to figure out whether she’d be a UCP voter yet so we will have to Wait and See who she hates more xDD
- that said, like many Albertans and particularly those in urban areas, Caro is fiscally conservative and socially liberal. She does take a longer time to understand issues that don’t obviously affect her and for that reason she is the sort of person to deny the feminist label even though she really aligns with it, but she’s learning. Generally really traditional and embraces femininity and the division of labour between genders, etc. WASPy.
- generally very no-nonsense and more biting verbally than Calvin, but also very much a romantic. She can be the PTA wine mom of your worst nightmares or the harlequin heroine of your dreams, just try not to get on her bad side. She likes numbers and finances because they are straight forward and say what they mean.
- I’m still divided on where she lives. Calvin is the one with the penthouse downtown, Caroline is the one in the suburbs but she probably still owns ranchland that she likes to supervise even if she doesn’t actually live there. All her horses are named after horses from Heartland or something, probably. Dog person. Hangs out in Edworthy Park to meet dogs, probably.
- literally both the girl in pumps and a pencil skirt who drives a car2go to get groceries and also the girl in rhinestone studded boots who drives a big black truck with a huge pink flowery cursive ‘oil wife’ decal on the back window, or the pink flowery cursive ‘dirty money’ across the top.
- literally to understand caroline-as-socialite pls just watch gavin crawford’s wild west - the oil wife [part one] [part two] i swear to god i cry laughing every time at ‘how about a western theme- how about not’. Everything gets me but especially the passive aggressive ordering-dessert-for-everyone and staring them down until she gets her way. You know what, just watch all of the shorts, it’s a brilliant series.

Reiki Therapy San Antonio Prodigious Ideas
This Reiki symbol's use enables you to heal themself. These are already a source of the treatment process, administering additional Reiki sessions? To learn Reiki, you will become energized. We often notice it as your body in one of about ten or so different styles of Usui Reiki attunements, people start gravitating towards those healing powers, many of the multitudes of Reiki that he practiced and taught in the body, without any contraindications.

Check out these 17 incredible pink ombré hair colors
A pink ombré hair is a hair color that changes from a shade of pink to another vibrant or natural hair color or vice versa. For daring, cotton-candy hair fans who want to get a feel of the pink hair movement, ombré should be your first step!
The Instagram feed from Philly hair color specialist Brit Evans is a sweet spot of a variety of seriously enviable pink ombré hair looks. From romantic rosy to soft pastel to hot neon pink paired with other colors and painted on pixies, lobs and beach waves – you will certainly wish you could try them all!
The pink hair trend even reached modern pop icons Lily Allen, Grimes, Jemima Kirke and Lucy Hale when they recently turned their strands into two-tone hairstyles and made their statements.
But of course, having a quirky hair color doesn't come at no cost. Your hair color change would also mean a lifestyle change because you have to be committed to keeping your dreamy strands long. Contact your trusted colorist to get the best product recommendations and care tips at home!
Take your social media by storm when you show off one of these super popular pink ombré hair colors below!
Red and pink
How would you describe this look?
I made a red to pink ombré hair dye where I used a darker red base that was blended into the light pink at the ends! I used ID hair color for the red base, brightened the medium wave and ended at level 9, and used Pulp Riot for the pink on the ends. My favorite thing about this color is how lively and fun it is!
Any advice for someone considering it?
This color definitely has some versatility. It's not your typical red or natural hair color, but it's not too wild either. My client works on cars for a living, so that she lets her personality come out with pink hair! She says she hasn't stopped complimenting her until she was in need of a fix.
What is important to know about this color is that it fades. To make it look fresh and beautiful, she has to recolour it every 6 weeks. The right follow-up steps are key to keeping the color.
For someone who wants something different, wants to stand out in the crowd and is ready to hold it, this is a really great color! It can also be customized. If anyone wanted it to be lighter pink or more rose gold, there are many ways to modify it!
Brown to pink ombré
How would you describe this look?
This is a bright, mixed summer pink balayage! The color fades into natural hair without stains or discoloration.
Any advice for someone considering it?
When someone thinks about getting a pink ombré, my first thought is: "Heck yes!"
Trying out fashion colors can be so fun! The only thing is that it is harmful in the long run if it is not conditioned regularly. This look is for people who like to stand out and don't care too much about looking "professional". The lighter the natural hair, the easier it is to bleach and dye. If someone has darker hair naturally, it can take a few processes before the desired look is achieved. It all depends on the level of dedication someone is willing to create and maintain in a healthy way.
Pink and purple ombré
How would you describe this look?
This look is a modernized pink ombré tones. It still has the classic feel of an ombré, but more mixed around the frame of the face. I also used the way the layers are in the hair to place the mixture higher up so the color placement flows. This type of color will pop more if the hair is curly or has a light texture.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Any kind of creative color is more care than natural hair color. You must have a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and conditioner for washing. Wash your hair every 3-7 days. The less it is shampooed, the longer the color lasts. Dry shampoo will be your new best friend. This type of color is best for someone who can go without shampooing for a few days. Any hair structure can have this color if the canvas is raised to a beautiful butter blonde beforehand.
Black and pink ombré
How would you describe this look?
This work is a natural dark root in a neon pink ombré. Some of my favorite things are liveliness and richness, and the mix that I was able to create with Pulp Riot color. I paired it with a bespoke cut and a ragged style to really add dimension and highlight the neon pieces.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Prepare for cold hair wash as this will be the best way to extend the life of fashion colors. The most important thing is to embrace the fade. Every time you wash your hair, it will turn more and more into a pastel shade of this color. You don't want to wash your hair every day to extend the time you have color in your hair. Dry shampoo is king. With Pulp Riot hair color I have found that the most beautiful fade out and true to tone.
Short blonde to pink ombré
How would you describe this look?
I love this shade of pink ombré because of its contrast. It is for the girl who is cute but has a cheeky side. It is hard but soft. The soft beige blonde on top is not something you usually see when you pair a bright, vivid color like magenta. I think the color draws your eye to the shape of the cut and the way it is styled.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Have fun with it! That would not be a hairstyle for my reserved, subdued customer. This is for the brave! In addition to personality, I think length and style are mostly universal. I think a lot of people could pull off this style and color as long as they have the confidence to rock it! It fades beautifully into a soft pink as long as it is not washed over and is cared for with a color-safe shampoo and conditioner.
Dark to Cotton Candy Pink Ombré
How would you describe this look?
It was a super fun project for me. I told her I wanted to give her a hair color that would turn heads and make people stop and comment, "OMG, I love your hair!" This was her first time experimenting with vivid color and she was pretty nervous to say the least. I took her previously lightened blonde hair and reworked it with a mix of cool-toned purple and pink.
I used a mix of different Pulp Riot colors from their Raven collection to give their vibrant color a certain dimension and depth. I used a flat iron to style her curls, which is not my go-to for curling, but I love the soft wave I created with it. What I loved most about her look is the instant trust my client got when she saw her new color. Her attitude and her sass came out right away, and I think the post-photos I took with her really show that.
Any advice for someone considering it?
Any customer looking at this ombré pink color must first know that the longevity on lighter vivid colors is not long. You could search for 3+ hours in the salon for color that fades until the 4th wash. That is the nature of the vivid color – the lighter the color, the less longevity. What I always recommend to my lively customers is to use the Viral Shampoo tray at home. These shampoos are a quick and easy way to keep your color fresh between touchups.
While having hair like a unicorn, a dream has come true, many don't know that there can be a trip. For example, if you have long hair full of black box dye and want to have pastel pink hair in one day without losing any length, it's just not realistic.
To keep your hair healthy, I recommend lightening in sessions and using Olaplex treatments at home to strengthen your hair. Olaplex is a game changer for the hair industry that has helped bring a lot of hair back from the brink of extinction by repairing the damage from the inside.
Dark to hot pink ombré
How would you describe this look?
We added depth to the root with a double calibrated level 4 ash and refreshed its balayage with brightener and 20 volume activator. Then we tinted their medium length and ended with a pink poppy seed punch. I added yellow to my pink formula to give a highlighter finish. We softened their layers and rolled them in opposite directions with a flat iron to give a lived feeling. I finished adding texture to the spray volume and adding gloss to the oil and defining their ends.
Any advice for someone considering it?
A rooty balayage is a great low-maintenance option for a low-key client. I love looks like this because it initially grabs a punch, but hiding it is just as fun! But if you want to keep the pink poppin ’, I suggest scheduling a toner and treatment maintenance with your stylist every 3 weeks.
This style is about enhancing the natural texture and adding a bit of drama so my client can feel like the worst version of herself regardless of whether she spends 5 or 45 minutes on her hair.
This look requires a brightener to reach, so your hair can benefit from adding treatments to your regime to keep hair soft, shiny, and healthy. I love the TIGI Copyright Care Booster under repair – shiny and smooth once a week for 5 minutes!
Pink and white ombré
How would you describe this look?
This pink ombré shade is nothing short of a show stopper. Melting from the hottest pink to silver platinum with no transition color is one of my favorite color effects. If done correctly, it is an eye to think, "Is that balayage? Foil? Ombré? "
The real answer is bleach and root-stained clay. Not in the traditional way to shade a lightning service, but to take it to a new level and test the limits of the "norm" with a natural shadow on the scalp – we decided to use hot pink to move to the other side of the spectrum to press!
Any advice for someone considering it?
This specific color is not for weak hearts. We first had to take this customer to a seamless platinum blonde that can take up to, if not more than a year to reach some people, depending on their initial color, color history, and integrity. From there we tinted the rest of the warmth with a silver / violet platinum. The last step is to dry and then color melt the pink on your scalp.
Maintenance and care at home is high. Since your blonde is raised to the lightest level of the blonde, weekly treatments are recommended to extend and maintain the integrity of the ends.
Be on the pink too! How do you care for the pink? A direct dye is used for this fashion color. This color molecule is mainly only in the cuticle. What that means to stay away from the heat will be in your favor! Use cold water when shampooing (with a professional color-safe shampoo or cleaning rinse) and stay away from mechanical tools for styling. Of course, this is not realistic for most of us – minimal heating styling would of course be my recommendation with great heat protection. My favorite is the glowing dry diamond oil from Redken!
Fashionable colors fade easily, and bleach and tones quickly grow out. Your visit to the salon should be for maintenance every 4 weeks, no longer than every 6 weeks.
The haircut complements this style and gives the finished piece movement, body and shine. The foundation of the cut should be done before the color as the color is molded around the haircut. This avoids unwanted pink drop-offs that make a mixed haircut appear “choppy”. I do the haircut in front of many of my highlighting services for this reason.
Dark to Light Rose Petal Pink Ombré
How would you describe this look?
She had previously bleached hair from previous color services with about 3-4 inches of new growth. Of course it is very light. To avoid bleaching, we changed the silver from Keune to dark charcoal with a demi-permanent color.
The pink is blush by Pulp Riot. The way I would describe this look would be charcoal that goes in a candy pink ombré. For styling, we have just made a nice round brush with some loose curling stone waves. My favorite thing about this look is the full-blown grunge look. It gives the pretty pink a little head start!
Any advice for someone considering it?
These unnatural colors are more maintenance. You need to understand that it will take more work on your part to keep these vibrant tones and keep your hair healthy. Lively tones almost always require lightening services, and depending on how many levels of lightness a stylist needs to lift, hair can revitalize the bleaching process. Therefore, it is important to have a moisturizing and repairing shampoo and conditioner.
In my salon, we also sell weekly treatments that keep hair healthy (Olaplex Step 3 or B3 Repair Conditioner). I suggest that my clients do one of these treatments once a week and sleep in the treatment overnight.
Even with vibrant colors, it is so important not to wash or rinse your hair with hot water. I try to explain to my customers that the hair skin on a strand of hair that keeps color in is open and close similar to the pores of your skin. When you take a hot shower, the hot water opens your pores or hair skin. Cooler water keeps the hair cuticles firm in color.
For all vivid colors, they will fade over time. The lighter they are, the less they last. Regular salon tint for these colors can range anywhere from 2-6 weeks to make the colors as vivid as they are.
Pink and orange ombré
If you are thinking of trying two colors at once, give these peachy colors a go. It's a no-brainer that goes from just to breathtaking.
Dark to pastel pink ombré
Working with a color can create numerous effects like this. Dark tones and light pastel pink colors give you this wonderful ombré creation.
Dark to light rose pink ombré
Using a particular technique to create variations for a color is really an ability to get. A shiny pink ombré hairstyle this gorgeous is a rare find.
Dark to flamingo pink ombré
This is a big entrance. A flamingo pink ombré style ?! You are sure to set a trend with this hairstyle.
Blue and pink ombré
What a divine creation! As if the gods didn't bless you enough beauty to pull this blue and pink ombré combo, the next thing is in heaven.
Pink and peach ombré
What a bubbly station wagon! These cotton candy colors are about to die!
Dark to light pink ombré
Plum-peach colors in a shiny take is what a girl needs these days, isn't it?
Strawberry and pink ombré
A saturated champagne pink ombré for long hair is one thing to die for!

These unnatural colors are more maintenance. You need to understand that it will take more work on your part to keep these vibrant tones and keep your hair healthy. Entrepreneur Guide – How to Start an Online Business
Are you a budding entrepreneur wanting to start an online business? You are? Great!
Thanks to accessible and affordable technology, and a hunger for fresh products and services, there has never been a better time than now.
There are literally hundreds of thousands of websites and posts out there claiming you can start an online business for free. Is this possible? In a nutshell… no, not really.
When it comes to business, nothing is really free. Sure, you may not have to fork out too much money up front. But when it comes to your time? Expect to spend heaps of it on getting started!
In the ever competitive world of online business, time is money. You could try going the free route. But the amount of time you will need to invest can have a negative impact on your online business startup.
With that said. You don’t need to have hundreds of thousands of dollars set aside. Just look at the creator of Spanx, Sara Blakely. She started her body shape-wear business with just $5,000 USD. Today Spanks generates her an annual revenue of $400 million USD. Not a bad little earner if we say so ourselves.
To help all you budding entrepreneurs get on the fast track to online business success. Here’s our quick start guide to help you kick things off.
https://www.talkagency.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2019/04/1-Entrepreneur_Guide_How_to_Start_an_Onlin.mp4
Find a Problem, Then Fix It
Unless you have already come up with a brand spanking new product or service to take over the world, you have other business idea options you can try.
Some of the world’s most successful businesses started by piggybacking off of an already existing product. They came up with an idea to simplify or improve upon something already out there.
Don’t believe us? Just check out Skyscanner. There were already thousands of airlines out there. And every day, people were going from site to site looking for the best flight prices they could find. A time-consuming task to say the least.
Skyscanner started by creating a spreadsheet that pooled all of the most competitive flight prices into one place. This gave them the foundations for creating the world’s biggest flight comparison website. But why did it work so well? Because they provided a service that answered a million people’s questions.
Michelle Phan is another prime example of a business-savvy piggybacker. She used the idea of cosmetic sample boxes, as pioneered by Birchbox. She then turned this into an online phenomenon by leveraging her relationship with cosmetic brands and her 8 million + audience on YouTube to create her own subscription sample box service that has generated over $150 million USD in revenue.
Basically, you don’t need to create a brand-new product or service. You can enjoy huge success by taking an already existing product or service and reworking it so that it is a new and improved version.
Five Steps to Online Business Success
While the above may be encouraging, a lot of hard work goes on behind the scenes. It doesn’t matter whether you want to start an online retail store or provide B2B or B2C services, the leg work is the same.
Find Your Niche
Before you start building your online business, you need to find the right product or service to sell. This is your niche market. Every entrepreneur needs to pick their niche carefully. But how do you pick the perfect niche? It’s all about research.
Start by compiling a list of potential business ideas. Let your head run wild. Explore crazy ideas. And don’t over analyse or overthink things too much right now. Some great questions to kick things off include:
What hobbies or experiences can you turn into a profitable online business?
What types of niche are you already a customer of yourself?
What would your dream business be?
If you could improve an existing product or service for yourself, what would you do?
Once you have finished brainstorming, it’s time to narrow things down. Take all of the ideas that you would personally enjoy turning into and running as a business. It would be easy to choose those you think are going to generate the most profit.
But remember, you will be pouring yourself into every aspect of your business. If you don’t enjoy it, you won’t give 100%. And If you don’t give 100%, your business will fail to thrive.
Of course, profit is important. So choose ideas that are going to earn you an income. As soon as you have found a niche with profit potential and that you are passionate about, you will be ready to move on to the next step.
Check Your Business Viability
Knowing where to start when it comes to checking business viability can be hard. But luckily, there are some simple ways to check if your business idea has potential.
The easiest and quickest way to start this is by doing a little bit of keyword research. High volume keywords show that there is a demand for a product or service.
Naturally, the higher the search volume is for a keyword, the more competition there will be in your business niche. Make a note of these keywords as you go. These will all come in handy when it comes to your digital marketing strategy at a later date.
The best place to check out keyword competitiveness is with Google Adwords Keyword planner. Every entrepreneur serious about starting an online business should sign up to this. It offers real insights into the amount of search is performed each month across your chosen niche or category.
Check Out the Competition
Another great way to verify that your business idea is a viable one is to check out the competition. Not only does this help you understand how similar businesses market themselves to their audience. It also gives you a chance to check out their products or services and find ways to improve on them.
It is important to remember that when you first start your online business, you will most likely not be competing with those who rank first. These companies have invested time, dedication and effort into becoming market leaders. They will have a comprehensive digital marketing strategy in place to keep them in the top spot.
While this may not be what you want to hear, it’s not all bad news. You can learn a lot about your potential online business from your competitors. Everything that makes them successful is there for the picking. From their brand identity, the layout and presentation of their website, the social media channels they use, even the keywords that work best.
That is not to say that you should create a complete clone of their business model. But if something works well, don’t be afraid to use yourself.
Know Your Customers
Here’s the thing. If you don’t know who your customers will be, you won’t know who to target. Every successful online business and entrepreneur will have a buyer persona plan in place. Why are these important? Basically, they allow you to humanise your target audience and create a personalised marketing strategy.
If you know the type of person you will be talking to, it helps you create content that speaks to them. It also gives you a better idea of the social media channels they will use and what their expectations are. Here is an example of a buyer persona:
Her name is Emily
She is 30 years old
She lives in a detached house in Sydney
She is a stay-at-home mum of two children under 5 years old
She owns a three year old beagle called Bonnie
She likes running on the beach
She wants to take part in a marathon
The buyer persona gives a human face to the data that you collect. It allows you to get into the mind of your potential customers and work out what it is that they want and need. Demographics are hugely important to tailoring and targeting your products or services to the right people.
You will use your buyer personas every time you need to make a business decision. Whether this is choosing different products or services, selecting an appropriate font or choosing the right tone of voice. You can use social media to find demographics and start building your buyer or audience personas.
Create Your Website
Once you have completed all of the steps above, you will be ready to create your website. This is where your business will live. The face of it. Where the magic happens. It is tempting to go for a generic, free website template. But if you are serious about starting a successful online business, then generic is not the way to go.
Every successful entrepreneur knows that to stay ahead of the competition, you need to stamp your mark. If you use a generic template, standard font and a template used on a million websites, what is going to make you memorable? The most successful online businesses have websites that include:
Personalised colour schemes and fonts
A professional and a memorable business logo
An intuitive user interface for improved user experience
A mobile-optimised website
Comprehensive SEO and marketing strategies
Detailed and targeted original content
Well-presented product and service menus
An established brand identity across all platforms
A funnel designed to guide customers from potential to actual buyers
Effective SEM, that ties into the website and brand identity
These are just a few of the basic elements of a successful online business website. There is so much more that goes on behind the scenes.
Each individual component has its own benefits. But when working together, they create a website that is high-impact, memorable and builds customer trust.
Think of the first four steps as the foundation that you will build your business on. Your website is the house that you build on these foundations.
By skipping them, you will be building a house on sand. And when you build a house on sand, it’s only a matter of time before it collapses.
Our blog has lots more useful information for entrepreneurs and those looking to start a successful online business. Why not check it out today and get yourself onto the fast track to success.

Exactly what was once deemed the wild, wild west of advertising has currently end up being the mainstream approach for reaching your target market. Today, driving sales with Facebook ads is among the fastest means to earn cash. Whatever type of product or service or information you're peddling, the quickest method to go from no to hero is to structure the best ad that drives website traffic to the appropriate funnel and targets the best possibility.
Simple, right? If you've had any type of experience with Facebook ads, you recognize that it takes a Jedi attitude to conquer this field as well as to in fact churn a revenue. Not only do your advertisements need to get on point, so to speak, yet so does your entire sales funnel. But, as soon as you have actually developed out your converting offer, all you need to do is to enhance those conversions then begin scaling your service.
So just how do you go about doing that? And also that do you depend discover this details from? Amusing point is, a lot of them haven't made much cash in all on their own.
No flashy automobiles. No large residence. No. None of that. Kusmich recognizes his roots as well as understands where he came from. Yet, exactly what he does not have in flash he makes up for in method and also implementation. Collaborating with just AdBuddy Review in what he coins his Black Tag company, and taking care of a profane quantity of cash in ad invest each month that convert from 1,000 percent to 30,000 percent roi, I needed to know exactly how he does it. My concern? Exactly what makes the best project? And how do you make use of Facebook advertisements to earn cash online. The solution? Intricate, as you may think. A simple structure improved a strong foundation. The approach? You may assume it comes down to making the sale. It's, actually, not. What comes before the real pitch or the sales channel is just as crucial as exactly what takes place once they drop into the funnel. Related: 14 Ways to Enhance Your Facebook Page Involvement How you can craft your message. Everybody wishes to make money with their Facebook advertisements. That much is clear. But, many people fall short prior to they even get started. They fall short since they do not craft the ideal message. Simply puts, they don't get in touch with their audience. Kusmich tells me that there's a simple formula to doing this. If you adhere to the formula, you'll be an action ahead of the game. No expensive Facebook ads programs are necessary. All you need to do is comply with the feel-felt-found formula. Feel: The goal is to connect. Making that link, you have to develop empathy. Let the leads know that you understand exactly how they really feel. This should deal with the pain point and also beginning of the issue that they're experiencing which you're fixing with whatever it is that you're offering. Felt: The following component in the compassion bridge in crafting your message is to connect that you've really felt the same way. You understand just how they really feel because you have actually really felt this way especially. That was the catalyst for whatever services or product it is that you've developed to address the issue. Found: This is where you inform the potential customers concerning the service you found. Or, the beginnings for the solution. Something that helped you or that you've applied and has benefited others. If you look at this in the macro, you're properly claiming the complying with. "Hey, I understand exactly how you really feel ... I've felt the same way ... up until I've discovered ..." That's it. Keep in mind, you're producing a compassion bridge. Kusmich claims that a great marketing message is not when your suitable prospect comprehends you. It's when your suitable prospect is comprehended by you. That's where the connection is produced. Keep in mind that people hardly ever buy on logic. They get on AdBuddy Review. The far better you go to creating that psychological link in your message, the most likely you'll market, market, sell. Each AdBuddy choice can be helpful, relying on your target market. A lot of marketing professionals ought to focus on place, age, sex, and rate of interests. Location permits you to targets individuals in the country, state, city, or postal code that you service. Age and sex targeting ought to be based on your existing customers. If women 25-44 are the bulk of your customers, start just targeting them. If they verify to be profitable, you could then broaden your targeting. Rate of interest targeting is one of the most powerful but mistreated feature of Facebook advertisements. When producing an ad, you have two alternatives: wide classifications or specific rate of interests. Broad Group Targeting. Broad groups include topics like Gardening, Horror Movies, as well as Consumer Electronics. Just recently, Facebook has added newer targets like Engaged (1 year), Anticipating Parents, Far From Hometown, as well as Has Birthday celebration in 1 Week. Broad interests might seem like a reliable way to reach a huge target market. However, these individuals commonly set you back more and also invest much less. Stay clear of using Broad Classification targeting. Specific Rate Of Interest Targeting. Specific Interest Targeting enables you to target individuals based upon info in their profile consisting of "noted likes and also passions, the Pages they like, apps they utilize, and also other account (timeline) web content they have actually provided" (Facebook). You'll discover the very best ROI utilizing Accurate Interest targeting. Facebook has a remarkable array of interests to target from Harry Potter to undersea rugby. The hard component is picking the right ones. When targeting precise interests, Facebook gives the dimension of the audience and also other suggested sort and also rate of interests. You won't have any kind of affordable information. When you choose passions for an ad, Facebook will certainly show an accumulated recommended proposal. Lots of marketers target the biggest teams feasible. This is an error. These teams are extra pricey and also much less targeted. Rather than target wide terms for your particular niche like "yoga" or "digital photography," concentrate on details passions. Research study which publications as well as blogs your customers check out, who they follow on Twitter, and also which relevant products they acquire. If you utilize laser-focused interests like these, you'll get to the people that are most interested in your subject and also one of the most happy to spend loan on it. For example, when we added a new DJ program on Udemy, we really did not just target the rate of interest "disc jockey.". Rather, developed ads targeting DJ publications like DJ Publication and also Mixmag. Then produced one more ad targeting DJ brands like Traktor and also Vestax. Integrate smaller sized, relevant rate of interests into a team with an audience of 50,000 to 1M+. This framework will certainly develop advertisements with huge target markets that are most likely to transform.

This publication creates a scary setting that has been stolen constantly over times however never ever rather caught once again. She led her time in a lot of traits she carried out and McLain catches her interest forever within this manual, alongside her aggravation with the various challenges she came across in the process. As an example, after raising the font measurements from my book I discovered that it incorporated 20 web pages, which led to just about $0.50 much less royalties per book. The story from the first manual may be looked at merely as the long prelude or even groundwork to the remainder of the set. The year 1984 may be actually lengthy passed, however this publication is actually much more essential compared to ever before: big brother is actually enjoying us, past is actually rewritten (though that has regularly held true) as well as totally free pep talk is actually constricted (albeit often under the misused semblance from political correctness). Guide is certainly approximately a lot more in comparison to a vampire however I failed to notice all from that at first (I was a pretty clueless teenager after all).

12 Quick Editing Tips for Social Media Managers
By Curtis Foreman
JAPADOG is a wonderful little company that operates a food truck and restaurant in my hometown of Vancouver, BC with the stated mission of “making the world happy and alive through hot dogs!”
As you can imagine, some JAPADOG fans were devastated when this post appeared on Facebook:
As commenters began mourning the closing of the much-loved stores and carts and wished the owners well in their future endeavors, JAPADOG stepped in to clarify that they were just closing for the day.
This is a cute and harmless example (though the “I just had a mini heart attack” commenter might disagree) of a case where a few seconds spent editing a post for clarity could have prevented a misunderstanding. But the stakes aren’t always so low.
From accidentally tweeting images of national tragedies to unintentionally making light of domestic violence, the world of social media abounds with cautionary tales of brands reeling as slip-ups on social explode into PR disasters.
And while there have been some truly horrendous typos on social (such as Yahoo Finance’s now-legendary inadvertent racial slur), even a less cringe-worthy typo can do lasting damage to your brand. Research by Global Lingo has found that as many as 59 percent of customers won’t do business with companies that publish content with bad grammar or spelling mistakes.
A little good old-fashioned editing can save your brand—and possibly your job.
As an editor who started working back in the days when we’d print copy decks and mark them up with actual pens, I’ve seen many things change over the years. But the value of clear, precise writing hasn’t changed at all.
Here are my best tips to help you avoid the nightmares of a media manager and make editing a quick and painless part of your publishing routine on social.
Bonus: Download our free guide that shows you how to 10X your social media performance and beat your competitors. No fluff or tired tactics—features the tools, daily routines, and advanced techniques used by three world-class industry experts.
12 editing tips for social media posts
1. Edit like a trauma surgeon
Trauma surgeons use triage as a system to prioritize patient treatment and maximize the number of survivors.
As a social media manager, you might not have time to look up whether there’s one “l” or two in “traveling” (answer: it depends), but you should really spare a few seconds to ensure you and your team aren’t promoting your competitors or depicting implied sex acts in ads for a family restaurant.
Like a trauma surgeon, learn to identify life-threatening (or in your case, career-threatening) conditions and treat them first. Maximize the number of survivors.
2. Edit like Beavis and Butthead
Before posting something, read it like a junior high school kid looking for something to snicker at. If you’re not aiming for suggestive humor, fix it before the internet gets its dirty mitts on it.
For reasons that should be obvious if you’ve ever used the internet, supermarket chain @aldiaustralia soon regretted this tweet:

3. Handle humor with care
Social media and humor make a great couple. Everyone loves a good laugh… except when they’re trying to find out how to return a defective product you sold them. Or when they can’t figure out why an error message keeps popping up in the software they bought from you.
Before cracking a joke, be aware of the emotional state of the people you’re speaking to, and of the wider context in which you’re communicating. Anyone who works in customer service will tell you that the people in the refund line are a tough crowd.
And as a social media professional, you don’t need me to tell you that it’s never a good idea to make a joke in which the punch line relates to a person’s ethnicity, gender, or economic status.
To bring this point home, here’s a now-infamous and spectacularly inappropriate #TacoTuesday tweet by Dave & Buster’s sports bar that never should have seen the light of day:
Photo from Twitter via AdAge
4. Have someone else edit your work
If I had to guess, I’d say none of the examples I’ve included so far in this article were seen by more than one pair of eyes before they were posted.
As writers, we all have our blind spots. (I’m pathologically and inexplicably incapable of remembering with confidence that gray is spelled with an “a” and have to look it up all the time. Go figure.)
Fortunately, we work with other people. Even if you’re a solo practitioner, there’s probably someone in your life with a decent sense of style and taste who wouldn’t mind glancing over your tweets before you release them into the wild. And if you’re at an agency or brand, you’ve likely got a team member (or an entire team) who will be more than happy to point out that you really should stop using commas to join independent clauses already.
5. Rewrite anything ambiguous
As the owners of JAPADOG learned, ambiguity breeds confusion. Before posting, ask yourself if what you’ve written could be misunderstood. If it could, look for a clearer way to write it.
“Biweekly” is a good example of an ambiguous term to avoid:
Biweekly: Twice a week Biweekly: Every two weeks
Sorry about that. http://bit.ly/2iZibc4
— Merriam-Webster (@MerriamWebster) August 6, 2016
When the dictionary apologizes for a definition, you know it’s time to look for another word.
6. Know the difference between good and bad compulsiveness
Yes, the rules of grammar and usage are important. No, every violation of these rules isn’t an error.
In The Elements of Editing (written in 1982, but still a good read), veteran editor Arthur Plotnik shares examples of bad compulsiveness (fussing over minor grammar and formatting rules) and good compulsiveness (obsessively rewriting a headline until it’s perfect).
Plotnik’s advice holds up today. When editing, keep your focus on making content as effective and engaging as possible, and on catching errors that actually affect readability and clarity.
Another editor whose take on this I love is Carol Saller, author of The Subversive Copy Editor and editor of the The Chicago Manual of Style Online Q&A. Her book is a worthwhile read on how editors can “resist compulsions, banish insecurities, and develop habits of carefulness, transparency, and flexibility.” If you’re a word nerd, follow her on Twitter at @SubvCopyEd.

7. Choose your style authorities
A day in the life of a social media manager is far too short to waste debating whether to use the serial comma. (Want my opinion? Just use it.)
Decide on a few style authorities to use as a tiebreaker in these discussions (or better, to look up words and usage rules before you start arguing with anyone). If you work at an agency or in-house for a brand, your brand team may have sorted all this out for you already.
You’ll want a style and usage guide for general questions of style, plus a dictionary for spelling. Here at Hootsuite, we follow the Associated Press Stylebook for usage and style and Merriam-Webster for spelling (both have handy online versions, though you’ll pay a few bucks a month for the AP stylebook).
As your house style matures, you’ll likely diverge from at least some of the spellings and usage rules in your style authorities of choice—which is where your own style guide comes in.
8. Keep a house style guide
Every brand that publishes content should maintain a house style guide. A well-maintained style guide makes it easy for new writers on your team to get up to speed, and it ensures you’ll write content that’s consistent.
Established brands typically have more detailed and thorough style guides, especially if they’re in the publishing business. The Chicago Manual of Style is pretty much the gold standard for print, and the AP Stylebook is a popular one for journalism and general writing. I’ve long been a fan of the Mailchimp Content Style Guide, which perfectly strikes a balance between providing just enough guidance to write well without getting into overwhelming detail.
Your style guide doesn’t need to be beautifully designed or comprehensive, especially at first. Just create a document where you record style decisions as you make them, so you’ll never need to make the same decision twice. A cheat sheet of off-brand content or other words and phrases to ban is a helpful section to include.
If you’re ready to get started creating your house style guide, here’s where to start.
9. Know what works on your networks
Creating content that’s free of brand disasters, embarrassing typos, and inconsistent stylistic choices is a good baseline from which to start—but there’s not much point crafting perfectly edited content if it doesn’t inspire engagement and response from your audience.
Part of your job as an editor is to learn what resonates with your audience and do more of it. Learn how to measure the effectiveness of your content. Learn to use hashtags. Learn what works on Facebook, Twitter, and other social networks. Help your team create and deliver more of what works.
10. Get help from technology
An editor’s job is to help writers deliver great content. Good old-fashioned copy editing is one way you can help, but there are a growing number of software tools that can do some of the heavy lifting for you.
Check out our list of writing tools and try using some of them with your team. I’m a fan of the Hemingway App for removing unnecessary verbiage, and of Grammarly for checking grammar, spelling, and internal consistency.
While you’re checking out Grammarly, I also recommend subscribing to their blog, if just for their cheeky editor-baiting welcome email:
11. Build editing into your social workflow
If you work at an agency or in-house for a brand, you probably already use social media management software to manage multiple social networks and accounts.
An essential feature of this type of software is the ability to manage approval workflows. Hootsuite’s Team, Business, and Enterprise plans let you set up your teams and workflows to prevent innocent errors—as well as not-so-innocent rogue posts.
HMV could have benefited from workflow and approval features during their very public Twitter meltdown:

12. Write well
If you’re going to presume to improve the content a writer has agonized over, it’s a good idea to put yourself through a little of that agony yourself.
At the very least, practicing the craft of writing yourself will make you a more sympathetic editor. It will also help you continue developing a nuanced feel for the finer points of language—something that’s indispensible in both writers and editors.
If you haven’t read The Elements of Style, get it and read it now. It’s a classic and a quick read that covers the elementary rules of usage and composition every writer should master.
And for guidance on writing for social media, you need look no further than the wealth of guidance on this blog. We’ve written a wealth of advice on how to write calls to action, clickable content, and content that converts. Want to write faster? Want resources for non-writers? Inspiration from people who will help you write better? Inspired tweets? It’s all here. Enjoy.
There’s a lot more to editing than being a grammar grouch. (By the way, if you’re still using the term “grammar Nazi,” please read this piece from @grammargirl on why it’s time to stop).
From saving your brand’s reputation to helping your team grow as writers, you play a key role as a steward and champion of great content. In the words of Arthur Plotnik, “You write to communicate to the hearts and minds of others what’s burning inside you. We edit to let the fire show through the smoke.”
