On the occasion MC likes him first, he wouldn't be able to tell or pick up on any of the hints (confusion rather than obliviousness). Even a confession would leave him too clueless to respond appropriately. He's happy that you like him, he just doesn't understand how much.

He has no idea what the 'feeling' is like, and would just assume it's another one of your quirks that he grows to like. It's also why he doesn't see you as a crush at the end of Day 2, he just couldn't pinpoint the feeling just yet.
