The Mirror BPR returns tomorrow!
For those of you who are new here, I'm on gen 4 of my Berry Pastel Rainbowcy story, and you can find the main hub page with links to previous gens, lore page, cast page, and warnings here! The first 3 gens are located on my old blog, but gen 4 exists here :) Gen 4 has only JUST started, so you haven't missed much! If you want kind of the condensed version, tbh you can pretty much skip gen 1 and the start of gen 2, and start here instead. (You'll miss a little bit of context of who characters are/relationships, but this is the point when I actually figured out what I was doing lol (that said, gen 1, despite being a disaster, DOES have some gems, such as the Marble and Star family dinner scene. I dislike a lot of gen 1, but I'll always stand by that scene)).
#reusing an older edit that i think i only used on my old blog to be like 'oh hey were moving'#like you can also read the whole thing if you want but it is pretty long at this point so you dont HAVE to#also this is the longest ive ever stuck with something?? usually i stop and then abandon things im writing#but im just so deeply attached to these idiots and their stories

okay i wanna talk about fourlear now that ive named it. i dont think i have...maybe briefly
fourlear is the name of the biggest holiday on overmorrow. i explained alot of this in the solaria explaining post that im making but i think ill just remove that all and link this post in that..anyway
lots of text below so im putting it under a cut!!!
it starts on june 18, meant to end on the longest day of the year, june 21! this means that the second day of fourlear is on my birthday :3 this was completely unintentional and im still really happy about how that turned out lol
i dont feel like explaining the 4 angel dragons things for the thousandth time, theyll get a more in depth explanation in the solaria post, anyway, each day is dedicated to one of the dragons
all of fourlear is dedicated to being together, throughout all the days. sometimes most of the town or something comes together and people will camp to celebrate all four days together, but sometimes its just family at home. though on the last day is the day most people come out together to where their town is celebrating fourlear, usually in an open big field where people can settle down and camp for the first 3 days
i dont think i ever wrote dwon which day was on what, so im just gonna make it up here/try to remember the best i can lmao just to be clear im imagining all these activities they do on each day is in the place where people gather, like the field i mentioned!! but some things are also celebrated at home with family as well. i already said that too but thats okay. LOL
the first day is dedicated to art/creativity, which i remember being a bit stuck on. theres probbly really great ideas for this right under my nose that im not thinking of.. of course theres lots of..art making and sharing lol. aaalll forms of art
the second day i think was nature, which of course was dedicated to caring for their earth and sharing lots of food, i imagine people will set up temporary little shops where people gather most and people will sell plants and stuff too. obviously overmorrow isnt comleteply free from pollution, so this day focuses on that alot too. i think overmorrow's pollution is pretty under control though!!
the third day is dedicated to love, where people give gifts to their loved ones like christmas, and just spend time together, or meet new people if theyre not at home and camping for fourlear
the fourth day is dedicated to magic, and right where mainly everythign takes place where everyone was gathered up for the first 3 days. where everyone basically just comes together, celebrating their pure angel/the dragons, how much they love their planet and their loved ones. theres alot more to show off here, where the other days were more chill and stuff if that makes sense? lots of big eventful shows and music and stuff to look at and things. and alot of magic spell shows ofc lol, theres also fireworks at night and people stay up all throughout the night on the fourth day partying and making friends and eating and loving eachother
i always imagined, you can probabaly gues, that fourlear is HUGE to all of overmorrow. its celebrated worldwide, and i imagine its like christmas where people dont stop talking about it the moment its comiing up lmao "WHY ARE YOU PLAYING FOURLEAR MUSIC NOW?!?!?! ITS STILL MAY!!" i have no idea what fourlear music would sound like but i like this thought alot
i havent reallyl thoght of hhow people decorate for it and stuff. i imagine theres a lot of green/pink/blue/purple/white like the overmorrow flag in it
i think i need to flesh it out a bit more, especially on what activities people get up to in each day, but thats the basic idea haha i really want to draw my ocs celebrating fourlear someday. i might try to do that soon?yeeeeees. it owuld make more sense to draw fourlear art DURING fourlear but im too impatient for that..maybe..
#its funny to imagine that rory since his birthday is the same as mine#he was always grumpy as a kid because hed get his birthday gifts on the 20th instead of the 19th#because the 20th is the gift giving day lmao#thunder roars#overmorrow#fourlear

Another Year Together
Todoroki x 『GN』Reader
↬ᴡᴀʀɴɪɴɢ(s): intoxication, mentions of partying too hard, injuries and cleaning said injuries, crack (?), fluff.
↬ᴡᴄ: 2.5k [10 mins].
↬ᴀ/ɴ: ahhhh i was bummed that i dont have any sfw shouto reqs *cough cough* send some- *cough cough* anyways so i made up a scenario of my own! i have more fluff ideas i'd love to put out but this may be the birthday fic or i'll post something else tonight if i can~ every time there needs to be a party, just know either mina or kaminari threw it. also its a little rushed because i wanted to get this out tonight and this is the longest sfw piece ive ever written. ;; pffft hopefully you all will love this as much as i loved writing it, happy birthday shouto!
"Stay still." Shouto muttered to you as you squirmed away from the harsh sting the disinfectant alcohol caused your bruised skin.
"Mmmnhmm... M' sorry." You utter haltingly, your leg jerking once more from the sudden sensation. You look up at him with puppy eyes, guilt-stricken as you have already broken your promise.
He stared at you for a few seconds before his gaze softened as you stuck out your bottom lip with a sorrowful look on your face. As he smooths the cloth over your exposed thighs, he softly sighs under his breath, expertly concealing the roll of his eyes. Todoroki was relieved that your reflexes were still in shape, the abuse of the liquor not interfering much with your cognition... at least not too much.
You two shared the same birthday. He had no idea that celebrating your big day of turning 21 would've been so hectic. As many things between you and Todorooki, you guys took today as a competition. The day started with you both trying to one-up each other since Todoroki’s lucky day was yours as well. First, your day with a breakfast made by him -- with the assistance of Bakugo of course. You couldn’t help the warm swell in your heart at how much effort he had put into it but it wouldn’t top you! While you two interned at the same agency it was pretty easy to surprise him with a big B-Day lunch and an obnoxious bouquet.
“This is a little too much…”
“There is no such thing as too much for you, Sho.”
Truthfully, he felt that way because he wanted to wow you as well. He was glad that today was a calm day concerning his patrol watch, giving him time to map up his day today and think about all the other miscellaneous thoughts that roamed his head. The painting he had saved for this momentous day sat in the back of his head as he patrolled the streets, the small accessory along with it sitting next to the rest of his pee-pee pouches making him grow nervous. I had kept the small item with him in fear of losing it, the last thing he needed was it to go missing under his watch.
You on the other handheld no qualms about goofing off for the day. Now, you weren’t entirely wasting away the day, you just simply knew how to let loose. With the great news you’d be staying in the office you had more than enough time to help plan and finalize Todoroki’s surprise birthday party. You bit your lip as you checked in with your longtime friend, Kaminari, to host the momentous occasion. Your mind was mostly occupied with the thought of the party and the small but significant present that you had in your desk draw. You and Todoroki had the same mind, the only thing setting you apart is you somehow being more… airhead than him.
Impossible, right? Not at all. That’s how it explains why he was busy cleaning up your injuries.
After being sent home early you had taken him out to lunch for some soba and well, boba as a great lunch treat — simple enough. You both were full upon going back home, giving you two a few hours to snuggle up and nap to rejoice with the sleep you two had lost from over the time having part-time heroes. Holding back the excited news of the party was hard to do, the first thing you did when you woke up was jump up and usher him to get up as well.
“What -- why??” Shouto glared as he was forced to sit up, rubbing his eyes with the free hand that you didn’t use to pull him up.
“C’mooonn! I just have one more thing to show you for today!” You beam brightly. Your facial expression was as bright as ever like you hadn’t just slept for 4 hours before that. Everything in his body wanted to resist but he couldn’t as he wouldn’t bring himself to. It took but only an hour for the both of you to get ready, sending Kaminari a quick text to make sure that everything was set for sure.
“Honey, I know this might sound a little odd but I need you to put this on.” You hand him the blindfold once you find him dressed and ready. You couldn’t help but grin at his confused face when he stares at the piece of fabric.
“I thought you said we were going out?” He asks mildly confused, taking it and putting it on anyway.
You paused and gave yourself a moment to think about his response, your cheeks feeling hot at the insinuation. Todoroki’s small giggle makes you feel better about your flustered words, rolling your eyes annoyed when he teased you like that. “Just hold onto my hand okay?” You instruct, hand coming up to hold him as an example. He nods his head as he follows your lead, more excited than what he led on.
The trip from your apartment down to your car didn’t take too long, the assistance of helping him not trip over his shoes harder than you thought. It was hard to keep back your laugh as he fumbled here and there, the most highlight of your experience was helping him in his care (like he usually did with you) and even buckling in his seat (not something he did for you). You were practically buzzing in your seat in excitement as you took off as soon as you were ready, the journey to his place not too far from your own. You bobbed your head to the music of the radio as you vibed along with the beats, fingers tapping the steering wheel as you mumbled the lyrics to whatever song played. Had it not been winter time in Japan you would’ve had the windows down, but you had to settle with the subtle and gentle breeze of the heaters on your skin instead.
“We’re here.” You announced your arrival. You used the keycard Kaminari had given you as the entrance to his apartment complex and zoomed-in irresponsibly. It was easy finding a parking space on the higher levels conveniently the same as his home. You hopped out and helped Todoroki out from his seat and helped him to the elevator. “Promise me to have fun, okay?” The question was simple enough, but your level of fun always exceeded his.
The sentence made him turn in your direction with confusion heavy on the top of his head. You took out the key from your pocket and jiggled it into the lock. As soon as he was about to open his mouth you yoinked the blindfold off his eyes, the first thing his eyes seeing your cheerful grin and everyone popping up from their hiding places and throwing the decorations up that they held in their hands.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY!”
Todoroki was taken back from the whole thing. How many people were there, the familiar faces, the decorations, and just overall effort that was put into this. He couldn’t help but look over at you with the same adoration he normally did when you looked the other way. He was greeted by so many of his friends and mutuals, the overwhelming amount of gifts that sat on the table, and the arrangement of food and drinks that sat up in the spacious room. In the back of his head, he knew he would have to keep an eye on you, and he was right.
The group had gathered to get some cake to get it out the way, the bonus of ice cream filling your tummy with happiness. As soon as you had finished your dessert plate, you declared everyone should loosen up; since no one objected, you went straight for shots. First, it was one, two, then it was two at once, then it was some straight from Mina’s belly button. You held no restraint at your alcohol intake, taking the immature opportunity to drink to your heart’s content. While you were liberal with your amount, Todoroki decided to take in practically none. The verses of your habits are almost amusing to watch like your two contrasting but similar personalities.
Later in the night when the mayhem had started. You and a few friends decided to dance on a few more dangerous surfaces, guaranteeing the sacrifice of one of them being Kaminari’s glass table.
“Holy shit—” Mina quickly rushed to your side, the same drunken posture and smile on her face as she tried to help you up, careful not to get the same glass shards that scattered the floor. “Are you okay-?!”
“YO Y/N WILDING!” Denki tries helping you up too, the help of the duo helping you somewhat.
You stumbled to get up, the flashlight of other people’s phones making you weary. “I-I’m fine-” You managed to let out, standing as you tried to clear your head and drink the water handed towards you. Either the H2O in that cup gave you courage or you simply went crazy. “let’s go again!”
Todoroki was left speechless upon watching you continue to party on, knowing damn well he'd have to stop you soon. He wasn’t one to attend parties, and most times when he did they always ended up like this. It seemed after your fall that the knock had given you a sign to calm down at least, deciding to drink more beverages that didn’t hold liquor in it. After some time he had managed to get you in his lap, holding you as he monitored your well-being.
As much as your reckless behavior would have annoyed someone else, he found it almost endearing. Well… not really in the sense you were drinking yourself silly, but in the fact that you still had the spirit to keep up and party even after the effects of your last hour of madness. It wasn’t long till you had gotten comfortable in his arms you had successfully partied yourself to sleep. Todoroki was careful in lifting you, thanking everyone from attending before quietly slipping out from the apartment.
He took a deep breath as he somehow managed to find your car, maneuvering to get you into the car and hopping in on his side to drive you home. Todoroki made sure to drive carefully in hopes that you wouldn’t barf all over his car that you had used to get there. The drive back was much quicker than when you two had headed up since it was practically dead at night and the streets empty. He liked drives like these. A part of him was sad that you weren’t awake for it.
Your boyfriend repeated the same process when he had pulled into your apartment complex, picking up your body and bringing you up to your shared home. He was dedicated to getting you situated, prepared to take care of you as much as he needed to. That’s how he found himself tending to your scrapes and bruises right now.
“You know I’m never going to let you drink again.” Shouto teases you, smirking lightly at your sad expression.
“You’d never!” You argued back with the same teasing tone, moving to cross your arms, stifling the pain as you did so.
Todoroki snorts at your dedication to hold up the act, nodding his head as he finished cleaning up your legs. “You’re right. But don’t expect me not to monitor you from now on.”
A smile tugs at your lips at his words, uncrossing your arms. The lingering drunk feeling still played in how you thought and spoke but not managing to affect how effortless it was to talk to Shouto. You blushed when he picked up your hands, kissing the back of your hands as he spoke to you once again.
“I have a present for you.” He mutters against your skin, eyes trained on the fresh bandages before looking up at you. He wasn’t looking for an answer and he didn’t wait for one either. He hoped that you couldn’t tell that he was weary, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small velvet box.
Your eyes widened at the realization of what he held in his hand, your heart beating faster as you sat up in your chair. “Sh-Sho?”
“It’s not what you think.” He responds almost defensively. Shouto bites his lip in anticipation, fiddling with the little box. “... it’s a promise ring,” Todoroki concludes. He felt like he had to explain himself for the slightly expensive jewelry. “If you don’t want it-”
You had engulfed him in a hug, pulling him tight against you as you had started to sob. You couldn’t think of words for how happy you were. The only thing that had taken over your body was actions. You nuzzled your face into his neck once his arms wrapped around your shaking your body. His hands soothingly rubbed your back, letting you get out what you wanted. He couldn’t help but laugh when you pull away with the most love-filled face he’d ever seen you make.
“You okay?”
“I’m perfect!” You hastily wiped your face with the help of Shouto, shakily laughing once he leaned into pepper your face with kisses.
“I was afraid that I scared you,” Shouto admits. You shake your head as you grab his hands, placing his palms on your cheeks, appreciating his soft palms.
“No… your hands are really soft…” You mumble. Your mind went blank as you tried to remember the next line you were going to speak, pouting as you looked around for the answer. The shock of him handing you the ring has successfully shaken you into processing your brain a little better, the heavy impacts of your drinking still lingering on.
“Are you okay?” He asks, worried. You nod your head in affirmation.
“A kiss could cheer me up.” You give him the same puppy eyes that you used before, weaponizing your cuteness to your advantage. He slightly cringed at the thought, hesitating before leaning in and placing a soft kiss against yours. He prepared himself to taste the alcohol against his lips. He pulled away once he deemed it ready, wiping his mouth and getting the ring he kept in his hand the whole day.
“I think you owe me by wearing the ring for making me kiss you.” He huffs, slipping the ring on your finger, his heart beating at the sound of your giggle.
“Nah you love me without the ring~”
“Yes, but I’d prefer you with it on.” He stands up and holds his hand out for you, taking you into his arms once again for the night and carrying you to your room. “For now get some rest, okay?” He sat you down on the bed and got you changed out of your clothes, sneaking in a few playful kisses here and there to make you laugh. Shouto’s main focus was just to get you situated to sleep peacefully for the night.
“G’night, Sho…” You mutter to him as you got comfortable in the sheets. Although the returning soreness didn’t go away you had managed to close your eyes and get comfortable.
“Goodnight.” He watched you until you fell asleep before leaving the room to prepare for you the pain medication you’d need in the morning for your impending hangover.
You never needed the promise ring to let you know he loved you; his actions always told you so.

SHORT HORROR WRITING TIPS?
i got a couple people asking what my horror tips are bc i mentioned having what i think is a pretty good perspective on this, so here you go.
make note that i am not claiming any of these to always be better than other options, or that my way is the only way to write a good story. and also am not claiming that my own writing is phenomenal lol. these are just things to think about
the less descriptive is sometimes the better. the monster that the reader imagines in their head will always be scarier than anything you can describe, so just avoid exhaustive detail when describing the horror elements. play with describing just enough to get your point across, but not enough to limit the readers imagination too much.
this not only goes for the detail of the writing itself, but also limiting how much you explain. YOU should know whats going on, but explaining the events or providing any one obvious solution that ties everything together makes it less impactful.
heres an example of a good VERY minimal description (from search and rescue woods)
here they dont say like “before snapping in half at the waist with a sudden jerking motion, and leaping off the peak. They fell, intestines dragging behind them like streamers, and the young man didn’t see where they landed.”. while it would still be a scary scenario to imagine, it leaves you with fewer questions than the limited description does.
not everything has to be as minimalist as that and not describing Enough can cause problems too. also please dont do “my mind couldnt comprehend it” to cheat your way out of describing things lol
experiment with surreality and things that verge on humorous. a lot of the times, the scares that stay with you longest are things that would be funny in other contexts. both horror and humor often rely on a sense of wrongness, and utilizing that rather than being afraid to step outside the bounds of Exclusively Scary can make for more interesting stories.
this is a good example of a semi-humorous situation. a guy back flipping through the woods could be really funny, but the context places you in the shoes of the witness where it becomes pretty alarming. someone backflipping towards you is not an obvious and immediate threat in the way a killer holding a knife or a scary monster with sharp teeth is, but it is so utterly Wrong in this context that it is far more unsettling than either of those
(the above is also a great example of writing a person telling the story in a naturalistic way.)
if your story exists in the form of dialogue (ie one character recounting a mysterious event to another verbally), please actually write it like dialogue. the voice of this dialogue should be the characters voice, not the same level of descriptiveness as a 3rd person narration. i am strongly biased towards naturalistic dialogue in general but i think it is near-VITAL in horror, unless the point is using unnatural dialogue AS something intentionally unnatural and frightening.
like in the above, if the guy speaking instead said “There was a man approaching me, but he was back-flipping. He moved in a series of uncannily graceful whirls in one continuous motion, dancing effortlessly over every log and bush in his path” that would be fucking weird bc no one talks like that. it completely destroys the readers immersion if they consciously make note of it. it sounds especially weird being narrated (please read all your dialogue out loud lol)
dialogue has unique strengths, in the case of horror adding a lot of legitimacy to the story when used naturalistically. like an element of immersion. taking the tool of dialogue and using it in the same way you use narration is like taking a screwdriver and trying to use it as a hammer. if your INTENTION is to do that, then by all means do, but if its not then youre killing your effectiveness.
this also goes for anything else other than narration. like if you choose to include a newspaper article, WRITE IT LIKE A NEWSPAPER ARTICLE!! it adds a feeling of legitimacy and the dry and basic writing of an article can actually add to the creepy factor due to its unique formar and perspective if you choose to include a note someone wrote as fast as they could before getting kiled, WRITE IT LIKE THAT! if you want to use lots of adjectives and rich description then why the hell are you choosing to use plot vehicles entirely counterproductive to that?????
for a bonus heres tropes i hate and that always bother me and they absolutely CAN be done well but theyre usually bad and i cant stand them
-having a premise that your character is hurriedly writing this story with the threat of death closing in at any second. this kills all believability. especially if they begin with like “i dont have much time” and then the story is the most long winded purple prose-y shit ever
-fakeout endings where the story is pretty well wrapped up but then you end with “but lately.. ive been hearing scratching on my door again” implying oooooh its going to happen all over again, which like. idk it kind of nerfs any impact of the ending and tends to be frustrating instead of horrifying
-using the phrase “unnaturally wide” “unnaturally long” etc to describe your fucked up rake knockoff’s body . enough with the unnaturally wide smiles they arent scary
-the focus on smiling in of itself (even when not ‘unnaturally wide’) annoys me bc a lot of the time it ruins any tension by humanizing its monster. like if a creature has been stalking the narrator the whole time and then you describe it making an evil grin or whatever then its just like POOF all ambiguity gone its basically just an evil serial killer who likes inflicting pain. its TOO human. theres no mystery
-in general, your protagonist being stuck in a situation that can only happen from them being stupid and getting unusually involved in shit that doesnt concern them makes things less compelling for me.
like i just listened to some creepy pasa reading that starts out like “oh i wonder what would have happened if i had simply turned right and not left” and it makes you think the story is going to be about pure coincidental horror that comes from being at the wrong place at the wrong time but then the scary event happens because the narrator 1) stops to investigate a random car stopped on a dark country road 2) gets out of their car to investigate 3) goes over to the car and looks into the car and around it 4) sees a stuffed toy on the ground near the stopped car and decides that means a child must have left it there and must still be out there 5) decides its up to them to help, doesnt even attempt to call anyone about it 6) decides to go into the FUCKING WOODS
like thats not a coincidence or a “what if i had only just turned right” thing thats you going out of your way to get killed

Fic Writer Questions
i was tagged by @cherry-toxic and @gideongrace ty both 💕🥰💕
How many works do you have on AO3?
15
which is a relatively small number but sometimes im still like, holy shit i finished 15 whole fics lmao
What's your total AO3 word count?
68,299 (time to post a 701 word fic and then never post again i guess)
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
well this is about to get mildly embarrassing lmfao. ive only got harry potter & stranger things fics on my ao3 and tumblr but if you want a full list, as a teenager i posted a shitty borderlands self-insert fic on quizilla, and hiccup/jack frost fic on ff.net.
and if u count fics that never got finished or published anywhere i dabbled in teen wolf, supernatural, dragon age, star wars, left 4 dead 2, skyrim, good omens, the mcu, buffy, wynonna earp, plus like, general disney/dreamworks crossover fic. and i started writing shameless fics recently, we'll see if i actually finish any. aaaand...i think that's it?
so...15?
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
1. Wait for you, Burn for You
2. Find Our Way
3. Something to Hold
4. Room for One More Troubled Soul
5. Don't Know What I'm Gonna Do (About This Feeling Inside)
all harringrove fics except #4, which is probably only on the list because it's been on ao3 the longest lol
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
oh god, i used to. i did when i was starting out, but then i just. i get self-conscious about what to actually say & leave shit to sit for too long. and suddenly ive got like 100 comments i havent replied to and i want to respond to them so bad but ive left them so long i feel weird about it now and it's a problem 😥
i want to start responding to them again, and every time i get a new one i tell myself im gonna but i never do cuz im fuckin awkward lmao
What's the fic you've written with the angstiest ending?
i......don't really do angsty endings. like, most of my fics end with smooches and/or love confessions lmao, i don't like leaving things off sad, even if it starts depressing as hell.
maybe this one? it still ends soft but without resolving the thing billy was angsting about, so.
Do you write crossovers? If so what's the craziest one you've ever written?
hahahhha.............i don't really do them anymore, but i already said i was into the whole animation movie crossover thing, so. yeah, i did lol. it was when i was in high school so of course i did one that was like, every disney character ever and they're going to school together. which really isn't that crazy a concept, but it was a lot of movies to write in so maybe that counts
Have you ever received hate on a fic?
nahh, not rly. i don't get around enough to attract anti attention lol, tho i did get one of those "👎" comments when someone was going around doing that, which lbr, is so low effort it barely counts 😂
Do you write smut? If so what kind?
yea sometimes. i do get the occasional horny idea lmao. mostly "what if touch-starved character + tenderness" or someone having lots of feelings while they're fucking. someone is usually billy lbr. i've also got a couple "what if someone got tied up and treated right" ideas but i don't think i've actually published any of those lmao
Have you ever had a fic stolen?
don't think so?
Have you ever had a fic translated?
i have not
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
yea, kinda! a collab with a friend of mine for fun
What's your all time favourite ship?
i...don't know? i get emotionally invested in characters more than the relationships themselves lol. i don't even know what ship i've been invested in for a long time, most of the shit i shipped as a kid i don't give a fuck about anymore lol.
except fuffy, actually. i've always shipped buffy/faith
and if we wanna go with fandom i've actively stuck with the longest it'd be harringrove. cuz ive been here and writing shit for yall for over a year now when i usually would've cycled thru a couple fixations by now lol
What's a WIP that you want to finish but don't think you ever will?
that's a mean question lmao how dare you. i honestly don't know, i have a lot of wips and i want to finish all of them. i know i won't but there isn't one specifically that seems less likely than the others so idk
What are your writing strengths?
uhhhhh.....i mean i've been told that my characterization is good? like, ppl being able to picture the actual characters when they're reading n stuff, so that's nice. and i could write introspection forever, u don't even know man, i get in the zone. i love getting in a character's head and picking apart their emotional state
What are your writing weaknesses?
writing dialogue really trips me up because i get picky about word choice lmao. i can be writing uninterrupted for twenty minutes cuz it's all a character's inner monologue but the second they gotta speak out loud im sittin there like ok what words sound natural and how much would they be willing to say etc. etc. suddenly it's an hour later and i've written three lines of dialogue. plus i tend to edit as i go so i'm always stopping and going back and rewriting stuff instead of just finishing the damn story
What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?
no thoughts head empty
lmao for real tho idk? i mean there's that one trope, when someone says nice stuff in a language the other person doesn't speak because they're pining and not sure if they're allowed to say it outright, that shit's cute. im sure all the google translated dialogue has been annoyin as shit for native speakers lmfao but yeah
What was the first fandom you ever wrote for?
probably harry potter but i literally have no idea. i started writing fic in my early teens and that time of my life is a big fuckin blur lmao
What's your favourite fic you've written?
ngl i think my fav fic is one of the multi-chapter wips i haven't published lmao
BUT. if i gotta pick something yall have read, this one. just a lil guy. plant dad billy and domesticity. it's cute and i like it. maybe also this fic that i wrote for valentine's day. i wrote basically the whole thing in one day and i was really proud of myself lmao, and i just really like headcanoning backstory for billy & that fic is rly just about him growing up, so
tagging @rvspberryjvm @wingedbears @paperbodiesamongthestars @platypan
if yall wanna! 💕

A/n: remember that idea I posted a while ago? well heres the fic! Im suuuper proud of this one because its the longest thing ive written for this blog (3k! more than 3k! that makes me so happy ahhhh!) and also I just really love it! usually I don't particularly like my own writing but this one I feel like is my best work. also about half way through writing this I found this amazing drawing by @panini-byanyothername which gave me the encouragement to finish this and also deserves all of the love because its an amazing piece of art! it was drawn based on another fanfic but its super pretty and is very close to what my story is about so I thought it would be appropriate to include a link

“I have an idea,” you announced, bouncing with excitement as you ran into the room where Felix was currently sat at your desk on his computer. Latching your arms around Felix’s neck from behind, you rested your chin gently on his shoulder.
“And what would that be?”he asked, spinning the office chair he sat in and successfully rotating within your arms.
“I want to paint on you!” you said brightly as Felix’s hands came to rest on your waist as you snuggled closer, plopping down into his lap.
“What?” Felix asked, slightly startled by your bold proposition.
“I want to paint on you,” you repeated, “like, kind of use you as a human canvas?” It came out more as a question than a statement, and you grinned awkwardly, the incredulous tone of his voice making you shy.
“I’m not opposed,” Felix mused, and you immediately brightened back up again. “Why though?”
“Well,” you said, fingers playing with the strings of his hoodie, “first of all you’re the only person I have on hand at the moment.” You giggled, and Felix raised a hand to his chest in mock offense. “But I’ve always loved painting on skin. There’s some strange appeal that comes with turning another human being into art. Unfortunately, I’ve only ever done it on myself before, but I had this really amazing idea a while ago and have held onto it forever and you are absolutely perfect for it.” You finished by pressing a sweet kiss to his nose. “So?” you asked eagerly, “what do you say? Let me paint on you?”
Felix chuckled lightly, and you could feel the deep vibrations where your hands were set on his chest. “Aren’t you going to tell me what your amazing idea is?”
“Nope!” you said cheerfully, popping the ‘p’ as you smiled happily, “You’ll just have to say yes and see what I do. It will be beautiful, I promise.”
Felix playfully narrowed his eyes at you. “You won’t do something stupid or make me look weird?”
“I would never,” you said, sticking out your littlest finger, “pinky swear. And anyway, nothing could ever make you look weird, pretty boy.” Felix’s eyes widened at your compliment, a light shade of red creeping across his cheeks as he wrapped his pinky around yours. No matter how often you complimented him he always had the sweetest flustered reactions.
“What are we waiting for then?” you practically vaulted out of his lap, tangling your fingers together and tugging on his hand to try and get him to follow you.
“What, now?” he asked, a bewildered look on his face.
“Yes, now,” you said, pulling on his hand again, “I can’t wait any longer, I’m dying to finally do this.”
“Alright,” Felix said, laughing as he stood up from the desk, whatever he was working on earlier abandoned as you enthusiastically pulled him along to the spare bedroom turned art studio.
“Here,” you said, tossing one of the already paint-stained cushions you often put to use out of the closet, “sit down while I find what I need.”
Felix grabbed the cushion and set it on the large, clear plastic mat you always kept set out over the hardwood floors. There were several places you had set up for painting, laying on the floor and the easel by the window being two of your favorites, and you rotated between them depending on how you were feeling that day. It seemed like today was a sprawled across the floor day, although that made sense, Felix reasoned, if you were going to be painting on him. He sat down and watched as you zipped back and forth across the room, picking through your jars of brushes and bins of paints to find the supplies you would be using.
Thrusting one of the mason jar mugs you used to wash out your brushes at Felix, you asked, “Could you go fill this up with water for me?” He nodded compliantly, pulling himself up off the floor and traipsing across the hall to the bathroom to fill the glass mug with water. When he came back into the room, you had set up a jar of brushes to pick through, tossed a few tubes of paint to the floor next to the two cushions, and were currently spread across a decent portion of the floor with one of the large folders you had labeled as “inspiration and references.” These were collections of anything you could possibly want to give you ideas or utilize in your art, ranging from newspaper clippings, old photographs, passages from books and poems scrawled on torn notebook paper (or on the more rare occasion, printed out), and absolutely filled to the brim with doodles and practice drawings. You were a firm believer in the idea that anything could be reused or help inspire you in the future, which ultimately lead to your large collection. Usually you tried to date the bits of paper you tucked away, but it didn’t help with your chronic lack of organization.
“What are you searching for?” Felix questioned, assuming that you wouldn’t answer but asking anyway.
“Can’t tell,” you said, eyes twinkling with a spark of mischief, “it’s supposed to be a surprise, remember?”
“Okay, okay, I’ll stop asking. What do you want me to do then?” he asked, looking around the room and wondering what you had planned for him.
“Just sit, I’ll find it in a moment.” Felix settled himself back down on the floor as you continued to rifle through the folder barely containing the papers inside it. He watched as you carefully separated a few glossy photos that had stuck together and shuffled through a stack of what appeared to be old school work. “Aha!” you shouted victoriously, startling Felix and holding a few taped together pieces of paper in the air.
“What’s that?” he asked, his curiosity over both the project itself and the haphazardly folded but carefully assembled papers in your grasp too much to handle.
To his surprise, you gave in this time. “Star chart!” you chirped, obviously too pleased with yourself to continue hiding your intentions. “I’ve always loved space, specifically stars, and I took an astronomy class in high school but never got rid of the papers that weren’t just worksheets. I always hoped that someday I would be able to use them for painting. And here we are!” Felix smiled at the happy grin lighting up your whole face, your excitement too endearing to not acknowledge.
“Cute.” Felix grinned happily as you shuffled over to where you had set up all of your supplies. All of a sudden his smile turned bashful, stammering slightly as he asked, “Should I like, take my shirt off or something then?”
You giggled, setting down the star chart and plucking a thin marker from amongst the plethora of materials. “Not this time. I want to do your face!”
“What?” Felix gasped, eyes widened in surprise.
“I want to paint on your face!” you repeated, excitement fading as you rolled the marker between your hands, suddenly nervous. “Your freckles, specifically. Only if you’ll let me though.” You fidgeted slightly, focused on the marker before looking up at Felix who still wore a slightly startled expression.
“My - my freckles?” he asked, and you nodded.
“Yeah. Finding patterns that match my constellations-” you patted the papers sitting beside you - “and then turning your face into a little galaxy.”
“Y/n,” he said softly, and you braced yourself to be turned down, “I think that’s the most amazing thing you’ve ever come up with. Why would I ever say no?”
Your eyes shot up to find Felix’s, and you could see all of the adoration that he held for you in their depths. “Really?” you asked, pulling yourself into his lap and tucking your arms around his waist.
“Really,” he confirmed, sealing a gentle kiss against your mouth. “Now, how do you want to go about this?”
You clamored off of Felix, grabbing the marker from where you had dropped it at his side and snatching the star chart into your hands before thrusting it at Felix. “Pick a few that you like, and I’ll see if what I can do to weave them out of your freckles,” you said, placing the folded chart into his hands and backing off to begin rifling through the paint tubes you had chosen. “Try not to do anything too difficult, I think the simpler ones would look better for this.”
Leaving him to pour over the constellations, you realized that you had overlooked finding a palette earlier in your scramble to find paints, so you pulled yourself up off the floor to move to the closet once again. Shoving a few bins of paints and stacks of assorted canvases to the side, you finally found the collection of palettes stored near the back of the shelf. Just barely managing to get your finger under the one on the bottom (the shelf was slightly too high, not enough to really bother you, but it could be a minor inconvenience sometimes), you dragged the precariously balanced stack towards yourself.
“What about Lyra?” Felix called from behind you.
“That would work,” you mused, shuffling through the pile in search of one not too caked in dried paint.
“Or Aquila?”
“Also fine,” you responded, selecting a mostly clean palette. “I really want to try Draco, so we’ll do that one first and then fit the others on after that. Sound good?”
"Anything you want to do is good with me," he replied, and you turned to see the pretty blush staining his cheeks.
"But you're the one making this project come to life," you said, crossing the room in a few steps and settling down in front of him. "You should have some input."
"I'm merely the final product in this situation. You, y/n, are the one bringing it to life." Now it was your turn to grow flustered by his compliments.
"Oh hush," you said, searching on the floor for the marker you had set down.
Finding your marker, you uncapped it and scooted closer to Felix. "Ready?" you asked.
He looked at the marker warily. "I thought you were painting."
"I am painting, but I have to sketch it out first," you laughed. "I always do."
"Oh," he said, looking down shyly. He always loved to watch you paint, however paying attention to the process was something else entirely. "Well go on then."
Studying his face carefully, you placed a small dot on top of a freckle close to the top of his cheek. Glancing back at the star chart, you drew another right under it, and awkwardly angled your pen to try and reach better. Pulling the papers mapping out your reference closer, you shuffled to the side and drew another dot.
"This isn't working very well," you said, taking Felix's chin in your hand and tilting his head to the side to try and reach better. "I might move you again, so try not to move and tell me if it's too uncomfortable."
Felix nodded in response just as you set the tip of the marker against his cheek, leaving a small inky streak down his face. You sighed. "Next time just say you heard me. I'm going to get the rubbing alcohol.” You stood up and headed to the bathroom, opening the cabinet and rummaging around to find the necessary bottle. Finding what you needed, you stood up and crossed the hallway once again to rejoin Felix.
"Here." Felix held out a cotton ball that he had no doubt found in the depths of one of your many bins of random art supplies.
"Thanks," you said quietly, already flipping the top of the rubbing alcohol open and soaking the cotton in liquid before scrubbing it gently across Felix's cheek. He held still for the moment, letting you remove the ink from his face and watching your movements carefully.
"Done?" he asked as you tossed the now somewhat grey cotton ball to the floor.
"Yep." you picked up your marker again. "Good to go?" He nodded again, this time making sure that the marker was nowhere near his skin.
You set back to work, switching between analyzing the star chart and making small dots where you could connect the freckles strewn across Felix's face to resemble the constellation you had picked.
After readjusting Felix's face for the nth time, you sighed. “This isn’t working,” you complained, capping your marker and letting your hand fall into your lap.
“I can tell,” Felix mused. “Any ideas?”
You tilted your head, scanning over his face, and Felix could see the imaginary lightbulb pop up above your head as a grin spread across your face. “Maybe,” you said cheekily, crawling into his lap and once again uncapping your marker. Placing the non inky end into your mouth, you cupped your hands around Felix’s cheeks, gently moving his head around until you think you’ve found the perfect angle. “Don’t move.”
Finding that your new vantage point gave you perfect access to the soft skin of your boyfriend’s cheeks, you steadily set back to work, sketching light lines between the makeshift “stars” that quickly began to fill the freckles dotted across Felix’s face.
“Alright! I’m all done.” You leaned back a bit to admire your work, already extremely happy with the way that everything was turning out. “And now -” you clambered off Felix’s lap to let him stretch while you gathered the scattered supplies necessary for the next step of your project - “we paint!”
Felix giggled at the enthusiasm spreading a happy brightness across your face, bringing you closer for a chaste kiss as soon as you had settled yourself back across him. Clasping the brush you had picked up between your teeth as you seemed prone to do, you grabbed two of the few tubes of paint selected from a small box of metallics Felix wasn’t aware you had and unscrewed the one containing silver paint. Squeezing a small amount onto the palette in your other hand, you replaced the cap and set it to the side.
You pulled the paintbrush from your mouth, and said, “This is it. No going back after I start painting,” you warned, absolutely failing to hide the playful tone in your voice.
“I have sharpie all over my face,” Felix laughed, “I’m pretty sure we reached that point a while ago.”
“Right,” you said, ducking your face a little, trying to hide your embarrassed expression. “Well then, let the painting begin!” Placing a sweet kiss to the tip of Felix’s nose, you swirled your brush through the silver paint and hesitantly hovered over the inked lines connecting his freckles.
“You’re not going to mess this up,” Felix reassured, almost as if he could immediately pick up on your thoughts, “anything you paint is always beautiful and I have complete confidence in you.”
The compliments flustered you even more, and muttering a soft, “Oh, be quiet,” you set your brush down, dragging the bristles across the lines you had laid down earlier.
Felix shuddered under the cool touch of paint stroked across his face, and you backed off for a moment, letting him adjust to the foreign feeling. “Try not to move,” you said, setting down your palette and cupping his jaw sweetly.
You painted thin, careful lines over all of the drawn out constellations, painstakingly smoothing the edges and adding a second layer to those where the black ink was still visible. While you kept all of your focus on the paintbrush in your hand, Felix lost himself in the way that you concentrated on the task you had set yourself to. He loved to watch you paint, and the experience was ten times better when you were right up close. Felix watched your expressions as you immersed yourself in your work, noticing every little forehead scrunch, loving the cute way that you would chew on your lip or poke your tongue out when you got to a particularly tricky spot. There wasn’t enough focus left to be self conscious when you truly absorbed yourself in your art, and it was times like these that Felix thought you were most true to yourself, which lead to it also being when he found you most beautiful. Not that you weren’t other times, certainly, but there was something enchanting about your little expressions and the way your hair would stick up from running your fingers through it. You would always have paint all over your hands, no matter how careful you had been, and when it was still wet the pigment often transferred to your face or hair. Of course you never noticed, and so Felix would let you know you should probably look in a mirror, but only after silently appreciating the way that the smudged paint on your forehead somehow only enhanced the glow of beauty that truly being in your element brought out.
“There we go!” you suddenly exclaimed, startling Felix out of his reverie. “I’m finished with the lines,” you told him, dropping your paintbrush into the cup of water and swishing it around a little. “Now I just have to do the stars.”
You leaned to the side and reached around Felix to grab the other tube of paint you had taken out and added some of the gold to the palette before screwing the cap back on and tossing it next to you. Balancing the palette on your knee, you grabbed the cup containing your brush and dragged it toward you. Quickly and thoroughly rinsing the paint from the bristles, you wiped off the excess water and took Felix’s face into your hand once again, gently maneuvering him back into a position where you could easily paint.
Now used to the feeling, Felix didn’t startle when you began painting again, the cool touch of the paint to his cheek calming. You worked steadily, crossing tiny strokes to form the stars connecting the constellations created by his freckles. Every now and then you would shift in his lap, or make sure that the angle his head was at wasn’t making his neck ache, but for the most part you worked silent and still.
You smoothed tiny lines into shapes, keeping them tidy and occasionally layering more paint on where it had smudged or the first coat had been too thin. After finishing one of the stars higher on his cheek, you leaned back to admire your work.
“I think I’m done,” you said softly, wiping a bit of golden paint off Felix’s forehead.
“Can I see?” he asked, plucking the paint brush out of your fingers and placing it in the paint water.
You nodded, climbing out of his lap and gesturing towards the messy desk in the corner of the room. “There should be a mirror up there. I’m going to go get my Polaroid camera.” You loved that camera, it had been a gift from a friend years ago, and you only pulled it out for special occasions. Felix knew how much it meant to you, and the fact that you wanted to capture this moment with it warmed his heart.
When you returned to the room, Felix was sitting back on the cushions you had pulled out, the small hand mirror next to him on the floor. “It’s beautiful, y/n,” he said, and you smiled at the compliment, whispering a quiet “Thanks.”
“Where do you want me?” Felix asked, nodding towards the camera in your hands.
“By the window, probably,” you said, “I think backlighting would look good for this.” It was reaching late afternoon now, and the sun was beginning to sink to the horizon quickly. The golden light would shine through his hair beautifully, and Felix always glowed in the sunlight.
The two of you moved to the other side of the room, and Felix quickly set himself up in front of the window.
“Should I pose or something?” Felix asked, and you shook your head in response.
“Just do what feels natural,” you said, squinting at him through the viewfinder on your Polaroid before lowering it to watch him adjust for the photo. He seemed to relax under your gaze, and turned his head to the side so he was looking straight into the lens as the light washed over the paint trailed across his face, illuminating the shine of the metallics you used. He stilled after a moment, and after you were sure he wasn’t going to move, you pressed the shutter. The camera began printing your photo, and after a moment you plucked it from the slot, pressing it between your lips and bringing the camera back up to your eye.
“I want to take one more,” you mumbled around the developing photo in your mouth, “close your eyes for me?” Felix complied, letting his lashes flutter against the top of his cheeks as a small smile settled across his face. You snapped your second photo, bringing the camera down and tucking the earlier in between your fingers as you waited for the second to print. Felix came to stand next to you, taking the second photo and looking over your shoulder to see how the first one turned out.
As you watched the color seep onto the glossy paper you knew that the stars across his cheeks, no matter how pretty they were, could never compare to the stars that shone in his eyes. He was truly beautiful, and standing there with your camera in hand, his hair brushing against your cheek, you were never more aware.

January 28
Cass sat on a metal bench at JFK, legs propped up on her carry-on, eyes flitting between the departures screen and her phone. Mat walked through the sliding doors to her left, catching her eye with a quick wave and smile. If he wanted to travel incognito in Long Island, though, the suit bag and “these-are-more-expensive-than-they-look” sunglasses weren’t helping his cause. “You’ve got the tickets?” She asked. After much convincing, Cass finally agreed to let Mat buy the tickets; he said it would be easier to make sure they were seated together, and had told her to think of it as a belated Christmas present if she’d like.
Mat nodded, gesturing towards the check-in counters. “Shall we?”
Cat grabbed his hand in her own as they walked to the counter. It hadn’t even crossed her mind that they’d be travelling anything but economy — she never had, after all — so she was more than a little surprised when he steered her and their bags towards American’s first-class check-in. He looked down at her. “What? You think I’d let you go to the All-Star Game in anything but the best? Nah, we’re travelling in style, babe.” Cass flushed, handing over her bags to be weighed and taking the boarding pass from the flight attendant with a harried thanks.
“Qu-est-ce que c’est, chère?” Mat asked, brushing a kiss over the top of her head as they headed up the escalator. French had been her foreign language in high school and college; it had gotten rusty, but Mat and Tito had been more than happy to practice with her, though Beau’s Québécois accent sometimes proved a little difficult to understand.
“I’m just really excited for this weekend. I know how much it means to you to be on the team and competing in the skills competition again, and I’m lucky to be able to see you do what you love.”
After a less-than-ideal forty minutes in the security line, Cass handed her license and Mat’s passport over to the TSA agent, who gave them a cursory once-over before marking their boarding passes and letting them through the scanner.
They boarded the Delta flight some 40 minutes later, after a much-needed pit-stop at the Starbucks. The flight attendants took their coats and showed them to their seats, and before Cass knew it she was seated in a very large, very comfortable chair that had more legroom than she thought humanly possible, a glass of champagne perched on her tray table. “Is this how you live? All the time?” She whispered to Mat, stunned.
“Sometimes,” he admitted. “The team charters a plane for games and I usually don’t do first class to go back home, but this is a special occasion. It deserves it, you deserve it.” He pressed a kiss to her cheek, pulling out his Airpods. “We’ve got just enough time to get through Pirates of the Carribean before we land. What do you say?”
Their plane landed a few hours later, the two catching an Uber to the hotel about twenty minutes away. Apparently there had been “a car” coming for them, but Cass balked at the idea, insisting that the Toyota Corolla coming to pick them up was more than enough for her.
“Hi, checking in for Barzal,” Mat said, smiling at the receptionist.
“One moment,” she replied, tapping on the computer and turning around to grab two key cards. “You two will be in room 307, third floor. Elevators are that way. Enjoy your stay!” Mat took the cards, handing one to Cass as they turned towards the row of elevators. As excited as she was, Cass was also just the tiniest bit apprehensive about sharing a room with Mat for a whole weekend. She had spent the night once or twice since the Christmas party, and had officially been granted “a drawer” in his dresser, but it was still the longest (relatively) uninterrupted time she’d spend with him.
There were a few hours before the festivities kicked off with some sort of red carpet-type thing, so Cass pulled out her laptop and got to work while Mat went off to exercise in the hotel gym. None of her professors this semester recorded lectures, so she was relying on good friends and a strong Wifi connection to get the notes from the one class she was missing. Cass wasn’t one to skip out on responsibilities and she did feel bad about not being there, but she had earned a break.
Mat came back a little while later, and Cass took that as her cue to start getting ready. After he got out of the shower, she took over the bathroom, spreading her makeup, brushes, and precisely-3.4-ounce bottle of hairspray over the counter. This was the first big event she was going to as a WAG, and nerves were flying. Cass was already well aware that she didn’t fit into the typical mold, and hated the fact that she felt like she had to justify herself everywhere she went. And it didn’t help that Mat wasn’t just one of the best young players in the NHL in recent memory, but also a total smokeshow of a man who had hundreds of women falling at his feet.
But galas, parties, extravagant events were nothing new to her. She had been the president of her sorority at UConn, organizing and attending more than her fair share of her own formals and semiformals or accompanying a friend or boyfriend to theirs. And law school called for dressing up more than occasionally. She was no stranger to impressing people. The dress was light blue to coordinate with Mat’s suit, heavily beaded, and absolutely gorgeous. This was the one part of the trip that she had absolutely refused to let Mat pay for, even though he offered. The league covered the room and he had gotten the flights, and her ego needed to pick up at least a marginal part of the expenses.
She twisted her hair up into a bun, bobby pins stuck in her mouth as she pulled out a few strands of hair. Setting spray? Check. Lipstick? A deep rose shade that she’d had since her first year of law school, so, check. “You almost ready to go, chou?” She asked, leaning down to her suitcase and grabbing the strappy heels she’d picked out for the night.
“Uh, yeah,” Mat said, buttoning his suit jacket. He usually had pretty good taste even before they started dating, but the navy blue velvet suit he was wearing was really something else. “Wow, you look amazing, Cass.”
She smiled, stepping towards him. “The lipstick’s kiss-proof, you know.”
He raised one eyebrow. “You wanna try that out?”
---
It was a fifteen minute drive to the venue, the car the league had sent packed with players and their partners, or whoever else had managed to wrangle a spot. She thinks there were some cousins involved? Mat got out before her, holding the door open while he leaned down. “The reporters are usually fine, they get that most of you guys aren’t used to this,” he murmured, “but you don’t have to answer anything you don’t want to, I’ll say something if I see it getting out of line.”
She squeezed his hand in appreciation, taking a breath to steady her nerves before following him onto the red carpet. After posing for a few photos, they moved onto the reporters, Mat getting steered towards someone who Cass was pretty sure was from SportsCenter, but she couldn’t be positive in the crowd of hundreds. Cass briefly introduced herself, stepping slightly to the side as the conversation’s topics veered towards strategy and expectations, how best to manage playing with only three players and how he was feeling about his chances for fastest skater.
“And you’ve brought your lovely girlfriend Cassidy along, how did you two meet?” Cass heard her name mentioned, quickly snapping out of the daydream she had been lost in. Fluff pieces were nothing new and she knew it would come up, everyone loved getting to know the players outside of a strictly hockey context.
“Yeah, so I’m in law school, and I got an internship with the counsel’s office for the Islanders,” Cas started, “and I helped Mat with some visa stuff. He kept trying to drop hints that he was into me, but—”
“They weren’t hints. I was being as obvious as possible,” Mat deadpanned. Cass giggled.
“Well, yeah, in retrospect I was just being incredibly oblivious, but came to one day, and the rest is history.” Mat leaned down, brushing a kiss over her cheek, and Cass could see camera flashes go off in her peripherals. She’d have to track that picture down later.
The interviewer nodded, asking a few follow-ups on her exposure to hockey growing up, her dress, and one more. “So, you hardly live the typical life of a hockey girlfriend. What do you think about that?”
Cass was confused. “Pardon?”
“Law school, being a lawyer. That’s not something that you typically see WAGs pursue, especially considering the salaries NHLers make. It’s not like they have to do much.” Cass was floored. How could someone be so disrespectful, not only to her, but to every other woman in her position? She was struggling to come up with a response. As it would happen, she didn’t need to.
“Excuse me?” Mat’s response was dripping venom. “Why would you ask something like that?”
The interviewer tried to backtrack, but ended up digging himself into an ever deeper hole. “Well, I just meant that you don’t see it often, which is true—”
“Maybe you don’t, but that shouldn’t matter,” Mat said. “Being a stay-at-home mom or running charity events is awesome if that’s something that they want to do, but it’s not for everyone. And don’t you dare ever suggest that Cass hasn’t worked hard as hell to get to where she is. She’s graduating in five months from an Ivy League law school, and she’s the smartest person I’ve ever met. Don’t ever talk about her that way. Don’t ever talk about any woman that way.” He turned away, his hand on Cass’ upper back. “Don’t ever let anyone undersell you. You’ve worked too damn hard and come too damn far.”
Jan. 29 (fri)
Cass smoothed out her dress, taking a last-minute look in the mirror to make sure nothing was stuck in her teeth. “How do I look?” She asked, turning to Mat.
“You look great, babe. Stop stressing.” She had picked a floral dress and denim jacket for breakfast with Mat’s family, but couldn’t stop wringing her hands in worry. Mat crossed the room in three steps, holding her hands still and looking at her more intensely than she had ever seen. “Remember when I was losing my shit meeting your parents?” Cass gave a tearful nod. “And it all turned out okay and now I text your brother probably more than you do?”
She laughed. “Noah worships you, and my dad loves you. Thinks you’re ‘good for me,’ whatever he means by that.”
“I think,” Mat said, tapping her temple with one finger, “that sometimes you get a little stuck up here. You’re so smart, and it’s incredible, but you overthink things sometimes, pretty girl.”
She ducked her head. “That’s probably true.”
“But what I meant to say is that it turned out I had nothing to worry about. And neither do you, my parents will love you and Liana’ll just be excited to have another girl around to complain about me to. It’s going to go great,” he added with finality.
“You promise?” Cass asked.
Mat kissed her, soft and sweet and slow, the kind of kiss that wasn’t born of passion and lust but of just genuine deep trust and affection. The kind of kiss that brings your feet back to the ground when your head’s stuck off in the clouds. “I promise.”
Cass flashed a small smile, squeezing Mat’s hand in hers and heading towards the door. “Then I guess we’d better get going.” She had been up late the night before, searching on Yelp for the perfect restaurant, despite Mat’s continual claims that they’d “love wherever, they just want food.” Though, she’s not sure what she expected when asking a 20-something man what he wanted to eat. There was a cute place a ten minute drive away, with four-point-seven stars and reviews that said their quiches were the “best thing on this godforsaken planet,” according to IridescentGymRat44. Cass loved quiches.
It was a quick Uber over, Mat’s mom having texted him that they had already arrived and snagged a table in the back for privacy. It may have been a family event, but it was still All-Star Weekend and Mat was still, well, Mat. It wasn’t likely he could fly under the radar for too long. He rubbed his thumb over the back of her hand reassuringly as they turned the corner, and his face split into a wide grin at the sight of his family. Hugging each of them quickly, he stepped back to introduce Cass, one hand lightly resting on the small of her back. “This is Cass, my girlfriend.”
“Yeah, we figured,” Liana said pointedly, causing Cass to poorly cover up a snort of amusement, which in turn just caused everyone to laugh even more at their efforts trying not to laugh so hard.
As it would turn out, Mat was right. She really had nothing to worry about; his parents embraced her (literally and metaphorically) as soon as she set down and his sister immediately whipped out her phone to show his worst baby pictures. “Hey,” she said, as Mat glared at her, “you deserve to know what you’re getting yourself into.” They were interested in her work and school, and Mat gladly took the liberty of explaining how they met, earning a slap on the back of his head from his mom when he got to the part with the visa slipup. They said their goodbyes sometime around eleven; Cass would have liked to stay longer, but everyone needed to get back to their hotels and ready for the skills competitions in the afternoon.
“Excited to defend the title?” Cass said, bumping her shoulder against Mat as they walked down the hallway to their room.
“Yeah, I guess,” Mat said, shrugging slightly. “Obviously it would be great to win, but there’s still McDavid and Eichel and a ton of other guys that have just as good of a chance to run away with this thing.” After his win last year, it was no shock that Mat had been picked for the fastest skater competition again, but the hordes of fans and reporters who were expecting him to go back-to-back weren’t helping his nerves. They reached the door, Mat shoving his hand into his pocket to dig out the key card.
“Look at me,” Cass said softly, once they had gotten their shoes off and were propped up next to each other in bed. Mat’s head turned, his hand still absentmindedly tangled in her curls. “You’re going to do great. Win or lose. I believe it, your family believes it, the other guys on the team believe it. Now all we need is for you to believe it yourself.”
---
Cass was walking through the tunnels of the BB&T Center, phone pressed to her cheek as she tried to listen to her dad on the other end of the line. A few players and their families were milling about, some getting ready to compete in their skills competitions, others catching up with old friends. “Oh, and you booked the tickets to Hermosillo, yeah?” It was a family tradition for them to spend a few weeks every summer back in Mexico with her grandparents; they had split their time between San Antonio and their hometown ever since retirement. Cass always tried to make it, but the past summer she wasn’t able to wrangle the two weeks off from her job that she’d need for the trip, and it had crushed her. They weren’t getting any younger, and her abuelo had suffered a nasty stroke the year prior that made her all the more anxious to visit.
“Yep, layover in Mexico City like usual, I’ll send you the ticket when the trip gets closer,” Patrick responded.
“And you’ve got everyone’s passport info?”
She could imagine her dad rolling his eyes. “Yes, Cassidy. Everything’s booked, everything’s fine. Have fun in Florida, tell Mat good luck from us.”
“Okay, I will. Love you, dad.” Cass said, running a hand through her hair.
A voice that she didn’t quite recognize called her name, and as she turned around she was more than a little surprised to see Auston Matthews waving at her. “It is Cassidy, right?”
She nodded her head. “Cassidy, Cass, I’ll answer to both.”
The confusion on her face must have still been evident, because he followed up. “I follow Barzy on Instagram, he brags about you all the time.”
“Yeah, sounds like him,” she said, tapping her fingers on her thigh.
“Are you going to introduce me?” His mom asked from beside him.
“Oh, yeah, ‘course,” Auston said, stumbling over his words. “Mom, this is Cassidy, obviously. Cassidy — Cass?” He questioned, looking over at her. She nodded. “Cass, this is my mom Ema.” She greeted her with a warm hug, and Cass just about melted. Moms really do give the best hugs.
Ema spoke up. “Do you have family in Hermosillo? I heard you mention it on the phone.”
“Mhm!” Cass’s head almost bounced from how fast she was nodding. “My grandparents split time between there and San Antonio, we try to visit for a few weeks every summer.”
“That’s where I grew up,” she responded, beaming. “It’s wonderful, but the summers get so hot, don’t they?” Cass and Auston both nodded.
“I think it got up to 110º when I was there once? Maybe 115º? I want to lock myself in a freezer sometimes, I swear.” The whole group collapses into laughs, and spent a few minutes talking before Cass had to tear herself away and find her seats with Mat’s family for the fastest skater competition. Ema had left her with no fewer than three restaurant recommendations, making her swear to try them all. “Best tacos I’ve ever had,” she had said about one.
Cass greeted Mat’s family with a wave as they settled into their seats, one row up from the ice on the right side. The players had just come out, and it only took a few seconds to make eye contact with Mat. She was wearing his — her — jersey, and had long since abandoned trying to roll up and cuff the sleeves. It wasn’t going to happen, and she kind of liked the feeling of being buried in it. She blew him a kiss as the announcers voices echoed through the stadium, and the heat was on.
Mat was slated to go last, which was either the best or worst thing depending on how you thought about it. Cass was always someone to sign up for the first slot for speeches and presentations, and hated having late games in tournaments during her lacrosse days. She liked being able to get it over with. Mat was the opposite. He was competitive and stubborn to a fault, needing to size up the competition and get ahead of the game. Needed to know what to expect. There first few she didn’t recognize, a few first-time faces to the All-Star competition, a rookie from Winnipeg who was a favorite for the Calder. Everyone was doing well, really well — all the times but one were under 14 seconds, but nobody had broken Mat’s time yet.
Eichel got close, McDavid got closer, and then Mat was up to defend his championship. She blew a kiss to him as he stepped up to the line, murmured a prayer, and the whistle blew. Clean straightaways, tight turns, gaining speed on the curves, and in the blink of an eye it was over. Cass knew he had won, the roar of the crowd told her as much, but she didn’t realize his time. She didn’t realize until the announcer reported that with a time of 13.080 seconds, Mathew Barzal had just set the record. His face was stunned for a moment, looking up at the screen and then down at the ice and then back up at the screen again, while being hugged and congratulated from all sides, as if trying to process what had just happened.
It was the last one of the night, so Cass said her goodbyes to Mat’s family, with a promise to meet up before the game the next day, and hurried down to meet Mat. There wasn’t anything formal scheduled for the rest of the night, so he came out of the locker room in just a pair of athletic shorts and an Islanders t-shirt. Cass ran up, jumping into his arms as he dropped his bag to catch her. “Woah, babe,” he said, steadying his hands on the back of her thighs, “coulda given me a warning there.”
Cass kissed him. “Wouldn’t have been nearly as fun that way, though, huh?”
“You’re right.” Mat shrugged good-naturedly, setting Cass down and grabbing his bag and her hand.
“How does it feel having beaten the record?” Cass asked.
Mat ran his free hand through his hair, still shower-damp. “So surreal. I wasn’t even sure I’d win, not with how stacked the lineup was, let alone get anywhere near breaking the record. It’s ridiculous, but it’s amazing.”
“You’re amazing.”
Jan. 30 (sat)
Mat was busy doing media and catching up with some of the guys before the game later that day, and Cass had elected to stay in the room. Mat had offered for her to come along, “you might think it’s interesting?” he had noted, but she’d be damned if she let herself fall behind in her last semester, she was just too close. It had already been a bit of a stretch for her to take a day off and come for the whole weekend, so her afternoon was instead filled with some utterly thrilling reading on advanced contract theory and a thick-as-all-hell review book for the New York state bar. She leaned back in her chair, taking the last remaining sip of the mediocre Lipton tea she had snagged from the basket by the room’s coffee maker. She could finish it later.
Cass picked up her phone, pressing play on a voicemail from Fiona that had been left earlier in the afternoon.
Uh, hey, it’s me. Cass, I don’t know if this is what you want to hear, but I don’t think I’d be a very good friend if I didn’t say it. Uh-oh. Conversations that started like that never ended well. I’m happy about you and Mat, I know you like him a lot, but I’m worried that he’s distracting you. I know you told us you’d be gone, but we missed you at the study group, and I know you skipped your law review meeting today. The rest of the message was more of the same, but one sentence stuck out to her. Think about where your priorities are. Think about where you want them to be.
Fiona Chan had a one-track mind. And Cass loved her for it — she was one of the most dedicated people she knew and an incredible friend. But she sometimes found it hard to understand when people had priorities that extended beyond the bounds of law school, when their sole focus wasn’t on their Contracts final or clinic or clerkship they were doing for some top-tier appellate judge.
She flopped back on the bed. Think about where your priorities are. She had been spending a lot of time with Mat lately, but no more than anyone would spend with their significant other — right? And it wasn’t a sin for her to have a life outside of law school. She was still more than competent at her job, got most of the reading done, was prepared when professors would cold-call on her. She still showed up to meetings.
But even she would admit that her head wasn’t in the game all the time, if she could hazard another High School Musical reference. She’d sneak texts, meet him for lunch instead of going to office hours, and now, take weekends off to be with him. But that wasn’t a bad thing. Or was it? Her grades weren’t really suffering, and nobody else had mentioned anything. Friends notice things, though, Cass thought. And Fiona was one of the most perceptive people she knew. She groaned. Why wasn’t there ever an easy way to figure these things out? She really liked Mat — she might even love him — but Cass couldn’t help but feel like she was gambling on something that wasn’t a sure thing. And her future wasn’t something to play games with.

Meet the Writer III, IV, V, and VI
Thanks so much for the tags @whataremetaphor, @allisonaldridge, @killer-badass, and @swaynewrites!
Rules: Answer the 10 questions, write 10 questions, then tag 10 people. ** From @whataremetaphor: 1.) Who are some of your favorite authors? JK Rowling, Perry Moore, Audrey Niffenegger, Alex Sanchez, Julie Anne Peters, Nancy Garden, John Green… 2.) Pen and paper or typing? Honestly typing. My handwriting is illegible and I type really fast. 3.) What’s your character development process? I mostly have an idea for a character already in mind and I let them loose into the story. They usually figure themselves out on the way, but if I feel they need a little boost or more details to make them seem more rounded, I’ll fill out little character development questionnaires or free-write about them for a while. 4.) Favorite words? English: silly, serendipitous, onomatopoeia, plethora…(mostly coz they feel nice in the mouth to say. There’s probably way more). German: gumpendorfer, ausgezeichnet, Eichhörnchen, frühstücken 5.) Do you have a “type” for characters (either ones you write or ones you like? If so, what is it? Hmm… I guess I tend to write characters that are slowly figuring out who they are and how the world works. So characters who are coming-of-age. 6.) Music or no music while writing? If so, what kinds? Sometimes, sometimes not. If I do listen, it’s whatever YouTube spits out at me. 7.) What first got you into writing? Kindergarten. My teacher said my story of the day was good enough to “publish.” We wrapped a piece of colored construction paper around it, stapled the sides and I made a cover for it. I was ecstatic XD For those interested, my story way: “Today I walked up the driveway to the mailbox and got the mail.” A literary genius at five years old hahahaha. 8.) Vampires of werewolves? (or magical creature of your choice?) Vampires 9.) Where did you get the inspiration for your current WIP? Augh, don’t hate me. I originally started my WIP as a gay Twilight Fanfiction… 10.) Most difficult part of writing? Keeping up motivation and self-confidence.
** From @allisonaldridge: 1.) What is your favorite writing snack? I don’t eat a lot when I’m writing. If I do, it’s junk food. Pringles (sour cream and onion) Oreos or other cookies. 2.) Would you want to visit the place or world you created for your WIP? The world is basically ours with a little fantasy twist. So yeah, totally. 3.) If you were stuck in a room with one of your OCs, who would you choose? Hmm..tricky…Probably Teresa because we have the most in common. 4.) What movie would you relate closest to your WIP? Twilight, Love Simon. 5.) Do you watch any Authortubers on Youtube? I watch a bit of John Green, does that count? I gotta check out more of these Authortuber people apparently.. 6.) Traditional publishing or independent? Hopefully traditional. I might publish some things independently though. 7.) What is your main OC’s fashion sense? Basic hahaha. Jeans and a shirt. 8.) Where do you keep all your story ideas stored? In my head or on a file on the computer. 9.) Are you working on more than one WIP right now? Not currently. I want to get the first draft of this one finally finished (been working on it for years) before I write anything new. 10.) Coffee or Tea? It is very important. I have to say both, I love them both. ** From @killer-badass: 1.) What is the cutest couple in your current WIP? The only couple in my WIP: Daniel/Vaughn. This WIP has been dubbed my Daniel/Vaughn story since 2007 :P They are beautiful. 2.) Would you rather have your WIP made into a movie or a TV show? Hmm…probably a movie at this point. 3.) Who would you want to direct said movie or TV show? God, I dunno…I would like it to feel like Love, Simon so maybe Greg Berlanti? And also Chris Columbus or David Yates for the fantasy parts. 4.) What TV show character would your protagonist of your current WIP be? These questions are hard for me, I don’t know why! Maybe…Marco from Degrassi. 5.) What is your favorite song to write to? Don’t really have one…I usually put on something like “Castle on a Hill” first and just let the YouTube algorithm do its thing. 6.) What is your protagonist’s theme song? Oh jeez, I haven’t thought about any of this. Perhaps “Brave” by Sara Bareilles.
7.) What marvel character is our protagonist like the most? Spiderman 8.) Your favorite movie? The Princess Bride 9.) Your favorite TV Show? So many. Right now, Brooklyn 99. 10.) What genre is your current WIP? Realistic fiction mixed with fantasy. ** From @swaynewrites: 1.) What is your favorite book, and your favorite author? Harry Potter, JK Rowling. This series has affected me so much, how can I not still answer this question like this? 2.) What’s the longest time you’ve spent working on a WIP? hahahaha, current WIP I’ve been working on since 2007. 3.) What’s your favorite character that you have ever created? Hmm I actually have a lot of feels about Ariel from my short story “My Life with Ariel.” Strange I didn’t choose someone from my main WIP, but there you go. 4.) Have you ever based a character on someone you know? (family, friend, coworker, etc.) I always take bits and pieces of personality from people I know and add them to my characters. 5.) What is your favorite WIP you’ve written? Completed WIP that would be “My Life with Ariel.” We’ll see if I make it into a novel or try to publish as is. 6.) What’s the best response you’ve had to one of your WIPs? One person told me they literally stopped breathing during one scene they were so enraptured by what was going on. This compliment felt so good, because it’s always what I’m going for! 7.) What’s the best film/television show you’ve seen based on a book? The first two Harry Potter movies. Hmm.. Though some things were changed from Love, Simon I felt the atmosphere of the book was captured so well. 8.) Have you ever written something as a joint project with a friend or a fellow writeblr? If you haven’t, would you want to? I don’t think so…but I would absolutely love to! HIT ME UP PEOPLE, LET’S DO THIS! 9.) If you could change something about a popular book series, what series would you change and what would the change be? Twilight. I would eliminate all the abuse in her relationships with Edward and Jacob. 10.) For the Harry Potter fans out there, what is your favorite character/spell/scene? (If you haven’t read or seen Harry Potter, I’d recommend it. LUNAWRITES NOTE: I don’t just recommend it, I demand it hahahaha) Favorite character(s): Draco, Luna Favorite spell: Accio, Not a spell but also Apparition Scene: The chapter in book 6 where Harry confronts Draco in the bathroom and then later has his first kiss with Ginny in the common room. ** My questions for YOU: 1.) Who are three writeblrs you love? 2.) What book has made you cry? 3.) What’s the first book you remember being read as a child? 4.) Where do you read fiction the most? (magazines, journals, books, tumblr, archive of our own) 5.) How do you feel about new novels that remind readers of other popular books? 6.) What are three things you look for in a good novel? 7.) How much of your week do you spend writing? 8.) If you’re imagining publishing your current WIP, being accepted by a publisher, what does that feel like? 9.) What are your three greatest fears about writing? 10.) How can you fight those fears? Tagging: @theouterdark, @damnwrites, @crucioandcoffee , @jess---writes @theaberrantwritergirl, @somnambulant-directives @wondersofwriting00, @smile-everything-is-alright, @greenandwords @rainbowsaw

relationship status:
at the moment i’m single! and while being in a relationship sounds brilliant, the last two relationships i was involved in? didn’t work out to say the least, lucky i’m still young
favourite colour:
it’s been emerald green for the longest time but orange seems to be dethroning it at a steady pace
lipstick or chapstick:
i haven’t used chapstick since i was six but i probably should use it again, water is my substitute rn fdghdgh - and i haven’t ever used lipstick in any capacity? so i’d have to go with the former
last song i listened to:
the space traveller’s lullaby | kamasi washington - i’m trying to get through his second album rn (i left off on the second disk yesterday) and while everything he makes is undeniably amazing, it’s? a three hour album? i don’t have the attention span for his spiritual jazz, as great as it is
last movie:
monsters inc is playing on the television right now, i’ll go with that! the animation aged kinda badly but it’s still such a fun movie! sidenote: james p. sullivan? a childhood crush, so this gives me memories
top 3 tv shows/podcasts/comics:
i rarely, if ever, venture into these forms of media but! if i had to answer, i’d say;
unbreakable kimmy schmidt / parks & recreation / luke cage
taz / mbmbam (i havent like. watched a full episode of either but they seem cool,)
tf idw / …………. yeah that’s it, i’ve never read anything else. probably should!

my friends, writing (in theory), listening to video essays, learning music theory + instruments and understanding audio production software
top 3 bands / artists:
HHH okay if i had to limit my choices to just three artists, uh. lorde, the mountain goats, and sophie. i couldnt even fit janelle in i hate th is
----------------------------------
@alyonian
color(s): light colors are always nice and pleasant, though anything peachy and sandy are the best! orange (specially pastel orange) is like. the best thing
last band t-shirt i bought: usually merchandising is very expensive and i dont have the money to accommodate that, but like. i do recall having a wiggles shirt when i was five. i wore it all the time, shjdjgsksd im sure that counts
last band i saw live: i almost went to splendor in the grass last year with family, which wasn't only cool since i’ve never been out of the state since i immigrated - the festival was in queensland, which is around a two hour flight from victoria - but the lineup was pretty fuckin lit too! the xx, haim, peking duk, tash sultana, future islands, vallis alps, a.b original,, i was p excited! unfortunately my uncle fell ill and so they had to give the tickets to extended family :( otherwise, i haven't been to a single concert in my life
last song i listened to: street fighter mas | kamasi washington - up to this song on the album and i really fuckin dig this! also the video is hypnotizing
last movie i watched: monsters inc is about to finish and up next is monsters university! which like…. honestly, this is an extremely unpopular opinion but, i like it just as much as the original? my opinion might be skewed because i’m a monster [hugger], but i like everything abt the movie! except for the finale of the scare games and the last five minutes of the movie, both were just. dreadful.
last three tv shows i watched: if aggretsuko counts that’s the last series i watched of my own volition, which is a miracle in itself considering that’s legit only the second anime i’ve watched to completion (the first being shirokuma cafe, which i probably need to re-watch). otherwise, the last two shows i had beared witness to were thirteen reasons why and queer eye bc my cousin put them on! that first show i could completely do without but queer eye is iconique
last 3 characters i identified with: grimlock (legit. all of them), urdnot grunt (mass effect) and vector the crocodile (sth), i’m not sure what this says about me other than Big
book(s) i’m currently reading: i’m reading ‘maus’ by art spiegelman at the moment, for the third time i believe? i believe my classmates are supposed to be writing an essay on this next term and shit, this novel is heartbreaking, i haven't been this emotional when reading a book than… ever, really. it’s a recommendation of the highest caliber

Well, I can’t really express anything but amazement at such an accomplishment, and to be honest I’m pretty blown away that so many of you have stuck with me since the beginning of this blog, and that so many of you enjoy Professor Oak enough to stay. I’ll forever stand by the fact that this blog was the best 'joke’ I ever made, and probably one of the most fulfilling things I’ve actively kept at.
As much as I hope this blog has helped you find comfort and laughter, RPing Professor Oak has definitely changed me for the better, as well. It has given me an outlet to heal parts of myself and provide help to others, and also pushed me to practice positivity even when I know I get so low sometimes that I don’t even want to try. Another bonus is that I have met wonderful people here, most of you just strictly friends on the dash, but I’ve also gained relationships with people that have extended into discord and I’m sure it has made all the difference this past year and a half.
As usual, I’m not really a fan of long-winded gushes of emotion, so I’ll keep it short, but I would really like to have it be known that my love for Professor Oak has grown tremendously, in ways I would have never reached without taking the time to thoughtfully craft his backstory and work to develop him further. I know he’s a very nostalgic character that so many of us know and respect that I’m always very careful of how I choose to build on the image without ruining what’s already there. Out of all my many muses here, this one has seemingly ( and surprisingly ) all at once snuck its way as my primary blog; the blog I always look forward to logging into the most, where I enjoy following your activity whether it be IC or OOC, and just generally enjoy being in the presence of people so passionate about a fandom associated with my childhood. I love this little corner of a community that has welcomed me and engaged with me and unknowingly kept me going, and to look back at my experience and see that I’ve had no trouble at all makes me feel really lucky.
There will never be a way to fully and accurately express my thanks, but I will say it anyway: thank you so much, and I hope that no matter where you go, and no matter what you do, you are trying to be your best, and that you’re happy. Professor Oak will always be there to congratulate you when you reach your dreams.
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER ( because my mind is so scattered - ) special shout outs to special people:
@timecapscle - wasn’t it you that said i’d one day get 1,000 followers? : ) you’ve literally supported me since the beginning and i just wanna say that i appreciate your enthusiasm for professor oak as much as i appreciate your enthusiasm for bill. its wonderful to see someone represent an otherwise under represented character and you do it well. i care for you so much, and wish nothing but good things for your future even if you want to do bad things in the name of science
@diligentseeker / @evolutionexpert - someone i consider a cherished friend, despite how sporadic our interaction seems, i appreciate all our random long talks on discord, and i’ll never forget our very first conversation. it meant a lot to me, and i want to thank you. i dont meet a lot of ppl that i feel ‘get’ me on some unspoken level, so when it happens, its a nice surprise. anyway i won’t ramble because i take it you’re not one for praise, but im glad people like you exist. with that being said please stop making professor elm stress me out.
@undinaes - the moment you’ve been waiting for. SIKE! just kidding; its no surprise that you’re always filling my dash with testimonials from people that see you for what you are. you’re a beam of sunshine with all the qualities to match; warm, bright, and a natural source of energy that brings people together. your passion for writing is astounding and even when ppl dont deserve your kindness, you’re unbiased in giving it out. truly a mom through and through. but most importantly, ur my girlie and im glad we met :v
@ofpalletown - in my mind, you are practically ash, and ill be here to support you even during all your moments of Extra™ ... but aside from that you’re very loyal to your friends and full of something sunny that i can’t describe. ur gonna be okay, kid. so pls stop stressing out ur dear prof oak
@03redd - i probably mentioned not long ago that your blog is really good, but ill say it again in case you weren’t listening. i love your blog? its very fun to follow, and i think you’re one of my favorite reds. even with me not being game verse, its so easy to just immerse myself in whatever nonsense you have red drag professor oak into. i dig your creative energy.
@normaliium - and ofc i cant leave out my cousin. the one to be admired, the ever-successful, brilliant human being that loves me even when i take off ten years of your life each night. my life would lack such substance without you, and i will never forget all you’ve done to help me when i would otherwise be left to myself. you make me really proud to know you, you really do, and everyone i ever talk to you about can attest to that. #YOLO
@bossgiovanni - you haven’t been active in forever, but you remain one of my friends and that’s all that matters. from skype to discord, im glad we could stick together even with our blatant differences in opinion. you are always so nice to me and say the kindest things, and i just wanna say thanks. hope youve been doing well! you are capable of so much, and i believe in you, so don’t forget that.
@agentmansley - can i jsut say thank you for staying true to your muse and throwing even the purest of characters into your mess? i have loved your blog long before i made professor oak, and you’re seriously one of the funnest people i’ve rp’d with here. everything i’ve written with you is refreshing and new, and never fails to make me laugh. thank you for your love for kent, and also for writing with me. i know you’ve been MIA for a while, but you’re definitely a memorable person.
@tcssaiga - i dont have a lot of cross-fandom interactions so when they happen im usually pleased. you’ve got great characterization, and have perfect dialogue. i never watched a whole lot of inuyasha but i’ve atched enough to know that you’re pretty close to canon. thanks for the interactions even if you’re mean to prof oak on archer ; (
@askgarymfoak - MY LITTLE ACORN!!!! the dedication you have for gary honestly gives me so much life, and i love rping with you on discord and just yelling about sam / gary hcs. its always a highlight of my day and i can tell you’ve thought about gary and his life long and hard, and its so cool to see someone interested in all that makes him the Headache we all recognize and love. please never stop sharing with me the personal hcs you have for the boy, i always want to hear them.
@futureheld - we don’t even rp with each other on this muse BUT youre one of my longest tumblr rp friends that i still talk to and you’re really important to me. we have history, we go back!!!! okay? #FRIENDSHIP n all that. but tbh id follow you on any muse because your writing is just great? id write any weird crossover with you because you have a talent for making it work seamlessly anyway. thanks 4 the memories, loser.
@seviiserver - CELIO!!! we dont talk as much as we used to, or rather, we talk in bursts every now and then but i consider you one of my good friends! not only are u really talented in all things artistic, but i love your writing and it’s always enjoyable to read, even if its not one of our threads together. you made me have so much adoration for celio and like all the other ppl ive met who bring life to underrated / under-rp’d muses, i enjoy seeing everything you pour into him... AND ALSO I LOVE OUR OAK / ROWAN INTERACTIONS? i love them so much it hurts okay. even if its just silliness in discord it brightens my day. anyway perhaps one day we will cross paths in this sleepless city and i will finally teach u how to ride a bike.
@rottenrhythms - i know i dont have much to say or comment with whenever you message me on discord, but i admire how much detail you put into your characters and meta. im always impressed with all the work and thought you put into your world-building; i wish i had that much drive. also, you’ve made a lot of improvement with yourself from the time i first started talking to you on skype. be proud of your progress, and keep working at it, it’s worth it in the long run!
@lack--two NATE youre definitely a very sweet person, and perhaps a little more devious ooc than i’d imagined you would be ( at least to me, why must you poke me for reactions? ; ( u wound me ) but you’re a soothing presence to be around and im glad you were finally able to make discord work. bonus points for letting me yell about yugioh all the time. never stop being wonderful. im here for you whenever you might need a listening ear, okay?
@loyalpika / @palletbloomer - #PRIKA!!! ever since i first followed you i remembered being blown away by your extensive headcanons on pikachu and i genuinely enjoy every blog you make! we dont talk OOC but from all your ooc posts you seem like a very caring older sister and thats nice to see; with you running around all the time, i hope you do get some rest every now and then! i hope our camaraderie never falters, take care friend!
@thepkmnnurse - i cant forget all the love and support both you and your muse have for professor oak, and im happy you try to spread positivity on the dash whenever you can! we don’t talk much OOC but from what i can tell you’re just as kind and nurturing as nurse joy herself. i hope you’ve been taking it easy wherever you are, and i hope your days are bright!
@rebelracket - will there ever be a day that i dont enjoy seeing your delinquent muse causing havoc on the dash? your creativity is wonderful to witness and i enjoy clarissa so much, thank you for interacting with a pure ol’ muse like mine. i hope we can continue to keep writing together, im excited at where we might end up. p.s. your art is delightful.
@porttownprince - you’re a gentle presence on my dash but im glad that youre here and that you’ve stuck around despite all the bad things that followed you. i hope you can overcome all the trauma you’ve been through. thank you for being kind with me!
@nikkouki - i know i dont say much but i enjoy your random check ins with me on discord, and i think youre a sweet young girl. you’re gonna go far in life, just make sure you keep going! continue being a precious kiddo and don’t forget to study your japanese ; (
@viciousvainglory & @midoriyamight - i cant think of one without the other so accept this double-tag lol. you’ve both supported this blog since the beginning and i wont forget how welcome you made me feel! no matter what blogs you’re on im glad we can still be friends! you deserve the big toblerone!
@fateandfury - my long time writing parter without knowing we were long time writing partners! the work you put into professor juniper is something to behold! we haven’t seemed to interact much despite rping professor muses, but that doesn’t mean i don’t appreciate your take on such a muse!

autumn leaves (reddie) chapter one
Eddie hasn’t seen the trees change colors since he was a kid, so Richie deems that the two of them should take a road trip back to Derry and see the trees change colors. Cue lots of bad car karaoke, too much coffee, and Eddie absolutely losing his mind over the gorgeous reds, oranges, and yellows of the fall leaves.
Or the one in which Eddie hates Richie, of course, until he falls in love with him.
Words: 1506
Warnings: lots of swearing, angst, why do i use italics so muhc????
Genre: tooth-rotting fluff with angst mixed in (this chapter doesn’t have that angst but just u wait)
As he shakily placed the phone to his ear, he sighed. He knew it. He fucking knew it. Richie Tozier was sure that his oldest best friend had disconnected his phone some time ago. Richie honestly thought it was because of him. Endless four am phone calls and complaints about whatever girl he was currently dating seemed to piss Eddie Kaspbrak off so much, he would rather call his own fucking mother. His mother for god’s sake!
“Hey, Eds,” Richie would greet, which was usually followed by, “Don’t call me Eds. Don’t fucking call me at all.” Of course, Richie had always assumed that this was sarcastic, but then again, perhaps he was only hearing what he wanted to hear. Richie supposed he had had this ‘filtered hearing’ since he was a kid. (He was still a kid at a mere seventeen, but of course he didn’t consider himself one.) Whenever one of his childhood friends interjected their conversation with the phrase, “beep beep Richie”, he found himself somewhat thankful. He could hardly control what spilled out of his mouth when he was younger. His mom jokes and careless swearing were hardly his fault. He didn’t know how to steer a conversation appropriately. Thus, his speech was unfiltered. His hearing, however, was a completely different story. He had assumed that every rotten thing that was said to him by anyone, apart from his bullies, was out of love. When it was coming from his friends, most of the time, it was. However, when it came from his parents, this was not the case. Richie wanted so badly to joke around with his parents about how they were all fuck-ups and hated each other and were wastes of space, only, he never said anything of the sort to his parents. In his mind, his relationship with his parents was complicated. They routinely shouted sarcastic remarks at each other, with the intent being clear, to say ‘I love you’. In reality, the family dynamic was quite simple. Richie’s parents were neglectful and downright verbally (and sometimes physically) abusive. Richie figured that out when he was around eleven, and it didn’t bother him anymore. After all, at seventeen years old, he had much more independence as far as thinking goes. He planned to move out in a year or so, maybe to a small apartment with Bev or Bill. Eddie wasn’t in consideration because he had moved from Derry when he was fifteen, to a small, southern town that Richie couldn’t remember the name of. Richie didn’t even care to remember what state Eddie was in, for that matter. He was just too far, it was like he was no longer real.
Richie shook his head and remembered what he was doing. He dialed the number to Eddie’s house in Wherevertown, delighted when a small voice answered.
“Hello?” asked Eddie. Richie was overjoyed to hear his friend’s voice again. He hadn’t called Eddie in almost a week, which must’ve been some sort of record for him.
“Eddie Spaghetti!” he practically sang, “How’re you on this fine Tuesday evening?” Making small talk wasn’t exactly Richie’s style, and Eddie knew it.
“What do you want?” Eddie’s tone was suddenly one of disgust. Richie smiled.
“Now, now, Eds, can’t a guy call his best friend without wanting something from him?” he mewed. This is the longest they had stayed on the phone in ages. Eddie usually hung up when he found out the person on the other side was Richie, but this time he hadn’t. Richie cherished the moment while he could.
“Richie, I don’t have time for this, I was just about to call Bill anyway.” Richie felt a pang of jealousy in his chest. Eddie didn’t want to stay on the phone for more than thirty seconds with him, yet he would willingly call Bill, just to have a friendly conversation? What bullshit.
“Why Bill? I think I’m much better company than him.” Of course Richie didn’t mean it, he adored Bill, but he deserved time with Eddie more.
“Yeah, you think. I really have to go, it’s important.”
“Just tell me and I can tell Bill.”
“Fat chance, Trashmouth.” The nickname rang in Richie’s ears. Eddie hadn’t used a nickname like that in years.
“C’mon, Eds, tell me what’s up.”
“Don’t call me Eds,” and before Richie could reply, Eddie started talking again, “I was gonna ask Bill if I could stay with him this weekend, I wanna come up to Derry and see the leaves change for fall.” Richie’s heart skipped a beat.
“You can stay with me.” he suggested.
“Yeah right.” Suddenly, an idea hit Richie. He had kept Eddie talking this long, who’s to say he couldn’t try his luck for one night?
“I’m serious, Eds. I’ll come get you and we can drive back up together, watching the leaves change in all kinds of different towns.” The line was silent for a moment, and Richie sighed. “You can call Bill now.”
“No, I guess I don’t have to now.” Richie’s eyes widened. He was only half serious in making the suggestion, as he believed Eddie would be repulsed at the idea.
“Are you serious, Eds? You wanna do that?”
“Wait, now you’re backing out?”
“Duh, of course not. I just need to figure out shit now, but don’t worry, I got this,” he paused, “How’re you gonna convince your mom to let you do this?”
“Don’t worry about that,” Eddie replied, “I thought of that already. Anyway, I’m only going along with this because I want a free ride to Derry. Don’t forget that.” Richie chuckled.
“I would never.”
The next morning, Richie had booked the flight (he found out what Wherevertown was) and rental car. Thirty-six hours of driving with Eddie seemed like a dream to him, and yet, here he was.
“Just thirty-six hours,” Eddie had said, “We’re not gonna make this into a week long thing, okay?” He knew Richie too well. The boy was already planning ways to make the road trip longer. Perhaps when they stopped, they could spend a few days at bed & breakfasts or something of the sort. Eddie had always been the sight-seeing type, after all. Richie smiled to himself. Maybe bed & breakfasts weren’t quite realistic goals, but Richie would settle for a cheap motel as long as Eddie was by his side.
Eddie’s fall break was just around the corner, which is why he decided to take this silly trip in the first place. His mother had been convinced that he was going to Maine in order to look at a college campus, and the only reason she was letting her son view a college so far away from her was because she planned to relocate close to wherever he went to school. Eddie’s relationship with his mother hadn’t improved a bit since moving. She still insisted that he had some bullshit sickness, paid for bullshit prescriptions, and hardly let him out for the same bullshit reasons. Frankly, he was happy to be getting away from her for an entire week in the fall. The price, of course, being three whole days with no one but Richie, but it wasn’t all that bad, he supposed. After all, he didn’t absolutely have to visit his hometown, he could stay with his mother. He decided that was a worse fate than being stuck in a shitty rental car with Richie for three days, so he chose the lesser of the two evils.
As Richie settled in for bed that night, he looked out his window and watched the stars. He smiled for the millionth time in the past hour, knowing that the following morning he would be on a flight straight to Eddie. He counted some stars and sipped his warm milk, taking a deep, cool breath and enjoying the quiet moment.
The flight was long and boring, mostly consisting of Richie staring out the window or playing with the rips in his jeans. He bought some cheap candy at a gift shop in the airport and took his rental car to Eddie’s house. As he walked up the creaky steps to his friend’s home, he smiled. A quick ring of the doorbell and the small, clean-cut boy was in front of him.
“Eddie Spaghetti!” Richie exclaimed as he wrapped his arms around Eddie, “How have you been?” At first, Eddie’s expression was one of antipathy, but it softened when he looked Richie in the eyes.
“Don’t call me that, I hate it,” he started, “I’ve been just great. Now can we get this show on the road?” Richie’s smile never faded as he presented a bag of caramel hard candies to Eddie.
“Not so fast, Eds,” said Richie, “I got these for you.” The statement was simple enough, yet it made Eddie’s heart skip a beat. Richie had literally spent hundreds of dollars on a flight and rental car all for Eddie, yet it was a small bag of candy that ignited something within him.

Request - Edward Kenway x Reader
Ask:
Fandom: Assassin’s Creed IV - Black Flag
Pairing: Edward Kenway x Reader
Words: 4431 (What’s with me and big fics, god damnit...)
Warnings: OOC af, probably... it’s been a long time
Notes:
I’m sorry I took so long anon! I’ve been working on other projects and the problem I had on my laptop didn’t help. On top of it all, I was hit by writer’s block along the way (ugh... why does such a thing exist...)
Anyway, I hope you enjoy it!
Requests are open!
The best way she found of being truly free, was being a pirate captain. She could do what she wanted, and the dangers only spiced it up. Boarding ships was a favorite of hers, the adrenaline spike during the battle and the reward of gold after it finished made it the most invigorating experience of all. So after a long time without any fighting, she and her crew grew bored and decided to attack one last ship before heading to port. Their target was a brig, and ignoring her instinct, which told her to not engage it, she jumped head first into the battle.
She should have known better. Now that the battle was over, she realized she should have heard her instincts. After the blur of battle, from which she could only remember gunshots, cannon fire and the sound of clashing swords and ships, all she could focus on was the burning remains of the brigantine that slowly disappeared between the waves.
The loud cheers of the enemy crew grew in volume when a part of the brigantine that was still above the water exploded, probably from some gunpowder barrel that was there. Small pieces of wood, cloth and rope rained over the sea and the brig. As the eyes of the captain of the brigantine followed the falling debris, she took a look at the small loot that they had taken from her ship.
"My ship...!" She murmured. Her voice was strained and only the few men of her crew that were tied to the mast along her did hear her.
"We can get another one..." Her quartermaster whispered beside her. His body moved against her side as he turned his head to take a look at the current ship they were on. "This one could be a good replacement."
Someone on the other side of him told him to "keep dreaming...", and their fellow captain couldn't help but agree. With ropes around her wrists and torso, tied to one of the masts of the ship, she knew it would be useless. These pirates would do the same thing she did to others: torture, then kill.
"What do we do with them?" She heard someone unknown ask.
"I don't know... Throw them out into the sea?" Another man replied. She could recognize of the Welsh accent, and she didn't know if she should be happy or feel betrayed that she would be killed by one of her own.
"We could throw them out when we pass by the next port."
A dark skinned man appeared from one side of the mast. He seemed to be circling her crew, observing them and taking a look. He passed by her, only sparing her a glance. Before he could pass on to her quartermaster, though, he did a double take and stepped back to stand in front of her. He looked her up and down with surprise, and she glared at the man.
"Edward, there's a woman here." He told someone at the side of the mast, out of her field of vision. A couple of fast steps were heard and she could finally see the other man. He had a small, scruffy beard and his blond hair was in disarray, as most pirates usually were. Contrasting against his sun-kissed skin, were the bluest eyes she had ever seen, piercing and hypnotizing. Was it another situation, she might have flirted with him, but at the moment all she wanted to do was stab him and all of his damn crew.
"Well, well, what do we have here?" He asked in that Welsh accent. A smirk spread over his lips, barely masking the surprise. The (ex)captain could see that the blond man was as surprised and confused by her presence as his fellow dark-skinned friend.
"What kind of man would let such a pretty thing in a pirate ship?" He stepped closer to her, which along with his mocking tone made the woman glare even harder at him and let out a slight growl. She felt the shoulders of her fellow quartermaster tense beside her, and she knew he was holding back a chuckle.
"Are you the captain?" The Welsh pirate asked her quartermaster, noticing his reaction. "Why would you have such a pretty woman on your ship?" She felt her crew member shake harder against her side.
"I don't know, why don't you ask the captain?" Her quartermaster replied with amusement, pointing at her. She heard chuckles and snickers leave the few men of her crew that had survived the battle.
The dark-skinned man and the Welsh looked at her questioningly.
"Captain (f/n), at your service. I would bow, but I believe the ropes don't allow me such thing." She almost had to bit back a laugh when the two pirates exchanged looks of surprise and the enemy crew whispered between themselves. And then the blonde guy laughed.
"Sure, and I'm supposed to believe that a woman such as yourself is captain of a pirate ship?"
"Being a woman doesn't stop me from being able to cut off your balls if I need to." She replied, offended at his reaction. The men tied to the mast squirmed, probably reminiscing on a past memory.
"What why would you become a pirate?" He asked, pretending to ignore the reaction of her men.
"It was either that or live unhappily with a pig that pretended to be a man. Also, it's fun." She felt like she was giving too much information, but she didn't believe they would let her and her men go, so she didn't care.
"You know, you remind me of someone... Have we met?" He asked after a moment of silence.
"Let me guess, you ask that every woman don't you?"
"No, not all, just the interesting ones." He smirked at her and started passing back and forth in front of her. "But this time, I really think we've met before."
"If we had met and you had that attitude, I would have broken one of your bones, so I don't think we did."
"You are a feisty little thing, aren't ya?" The man's smirk grew. He didn't even let her reply. Instead he turned to his partner. "Adéwalé, make sure our guests feel comfortable."
After that, he turned around and left them. The girl turned to the dark skinned man with a big, innocent looking smile.
"So, Adéwalé, how're you doing?"
It was going to be a long trip, so the least she could do was entertain herself.
---___---___---___---___---___---
She and her men could easily have died of boredom tied to the mast, and among themselves they wondered if that was how they planned to kill them. But the crew of the Jackdaw never did anything to harm them, although some appeared to want to.
After a few days, they started to create games among themselves. One they preferred was the game we nowadays call the telephone game, which would lead to a lot of chuckles and giggles among the prisoners. Eventually, even the Jackdaw crew started to join in when bored.
Along the way, (f/n) had been able to exchange a few words with Adéwalé and a few of the nicer men of the crew, sometimes even holding long conversations at night. Occasionaly, Edward would pass by (Adéwalé had confirmed her suspicion that the man was indeed the captain), but he wouldn't stop for more than a few couple of words, or he would only spare a glance. The longest conversation he had with her or her men was when someone asked them why they were stuck to the mast and not in some sort of cell. Edward just laughed and told them the treasure he had taken from their ship was taking up the place.
A week and half had passed when Adéwalé cut off the rope that tied them to the mast and took the woman to the captain's quarters, where Edward was waiting, sitting at a chair with his feet over a table with maps and charts.
"Why am I here?" She asked, looking around the cabin after Adewalé left. One thing she could say was that it was a lot more messy than her own used to be.
"You know, I have been thinking, I never asked you where you were from." He asked her directly. She looked at him from across the table, while he patiently awaited her answer.
"And why are you so interested?"
"You're welsh too aren't, you?"
"Takes one to know one, I guess..." She replied with a shrug.
"I knew it!" He laughed. He got up from his seat and dragged another chair from a corner of the room, which he put in front of her and motioned her to seat down, before going back to his own.
"So where are you from, exactly?" She asked him before he could ask her the same thing to her.
"I come from Bristol, but I was born in Wales and lived there for a few years. What about you?"
"Born and raised in Swansea! Funny, I had a friend as a kid that moved to Bristol..." She said, while Edward grabbed a nearby bottle and took a swing, before replying:
"Really?! I was born on Swansea as well!"
The two captains (if she could even call herself that) remained in silence for a while. A shock seemed to pass through them before they looked at each other in surprise.
"No way! Kenway?" Edward's lips widened in a smile, while she remained with wide eyes and an open mouth.
"(L/n)?! So I do know you!"
Edward got up from his seat and, after pulling her tied form from her chair, hugged her tightly.
"Hmm... I'm just... hugging you back in my mind, since my arms can't do it."
"Oh! About that..."
Edwards broke from the hug and pulled out his hidden blade, making her jump at the sudden sight of it. Once she recovered from the surprise, the ropes that were once binding her arms fell to the floor.
Moving her arms was painful with all the cramps that assaulted her muscles.
"Aren't you afraid I attack you or something?" She asked Edward. He moved back to his seat once more with a laugh.
"What did I do for you to hate me so much to the point you would attack me?"
"I don't know, why don't you ask my ship? Oh, wait! He's at the bottom of the ocean." A nervous laugh escaped the man. He grabbed an empty glass that was nearby and handed it to her after pouring some of the drink into it.
"Anyway..." He started, trying to change the subject "...how exactly did you become a pirate?"
Reluctantly, the woman accepted the change of subject. The two spoke for hours exchanging stories of their lives after Edward's departure. They got so into it, they couldn't talk about everything that day, so they continued the next day, and the other day after that...
After the first visit to his cabin, the ex-captain and her previous crew weren't tied to the mast anymore, instead they received the option of helping the Jackdaw's crew with navigation, and they could either leave on the next port, join the crew, or steal another ship and sail on their own.
The woman decided to leave on the next port, much to Edward's disappointment.
"Are you sure you don't want to stay here with me?" He had asked her, reminding her of a kicked puppy.
"I've been under the command of others, not very exciting." Had been her reply.
"What about this? Next time we port, I have some business to take care of. You can accompany me, and if you find it interesting, I'll train you."
She didn't know what he meant, but she accepted the condition just to amuse him, having her mind already set up.
Or so she thought. The same way she thought her old friend had told her everything about his life.
The following time her foot touched land was when Edward told her about the Templars and Assassins, after she had to help his ass when his assassination went wrong.
And apparently that was enough excitement to make her stay.
---___---___---___---___---___---___---
"Again!" Edward quietly observed the woman from the upper deck. She stumbled, almost falling to the floor again, when a wave hit the ship. One of the four men she was sparing with tried to help her up, but she refused. She got into an attack position, the stick stuck to her wrist (which she used in the place of a Hidden Blade for sparing) pointing towards her sparing partners.
Edward seemed hypnotized, watching her spar with his crewmembers. Adéwale was the one ordering around the ship at the moment, considering Edward being on the ship pretty much made no difference because of how distracted he was.
He couldn't help but stare at the woman as she seemed to dance around her sparing partners, her “blade” nothing more but an extension of her body. She dodged, blocked, attacked almost perfectly...
...until she left her back open and found herself on the floor again.
"Again!" She screamed once more, showing everyone on the deck of how stubborn she was. Edward called her and she looked at him.
"Always watch your back!" He yelled at her. She nodded, determination taking over her.
Another sparing started, and he watched her carefully, paying attention to the smallest movement of her body: her flowing hair, her cloak dancing around her legs or flying around her hips when she rotated suddenly to defend an attack (She had gotten an Assassin's cloak identical to Edwards, only darken and smaller), the way the corners of her lips twitched up into a smirk when she blocked successfully... He wasn't just hypnotized, he was downright smitten by her. The crew knew it, he knew it, hell, probably the ship itself knew it, but he would never admit that. Last time he was with someone, it didn't end well, and considering they were both pirates and assassins, he knew the relationship would, most likely, end terribly bad. So why bother?
Finally, after countless tries, she was able to dodge an attack from someone behind her. Her lips got stuck in a smile for the rest of the match, and Edward couldn't help but feel proud of her. Once the men were all on the floor, Edward climbed down to the main deck.
"Thought you'd never do it!" He admitted with a laugh.
"Yeah, me too. Still need some training, but I'm getting there! One day even I will be able to beat you!"
"Why don't we try it now?" He asked throwing her the Hidden Blade she had left on top of a barrel during the sparing match. Her demeanor turned serious and she looked at him, worried.
"With the real blades, are you sure?" He nodded at her before replying:
"I believe you'll be careful enough."
After a moment of hesitation, she threw the stick on her wrist away and put the Hidden Blade where it belonged.
The two stepped away from each other. She stuck out her hidden blade, as Edward pulled out his sword, both of them in battle stances. Most of the crew's attention turned to them, those who had work to do spared only a few amused glances. Their captain versus the woman, that would be interesting. The few who had worked under her and stayed were even more interested that the rest.
Edward lunged at her and she blocked successfully. The two then exchanged blows, always countering and blocking the other. It seemed that they couldn't decide on a winner.
But then she blocked one of his blows by twisting her arm and shoving his sword away from her with the help of her blade. She then spun in the other direction and hit him right in the face with her elbow.
Edward stumbled back with a hand over his nose and she turned to him again, smug look on her face. And when he saw it, his complain got stuck in his throat. Her smug look did things to him... He smiled at her, sheathed the blade and chuckled.
"That was a nice hit!". Edward wrapped his arm around her shoulders and squeezed her against him in a "friendly" manner. She glanced at him sideways. Weren't they continuing? That was it? "Tonight we'll celebrate your progress once we reach land! What do you say?"
He dragged her for a while as he awaited her answer. Once she weakly accepted it, he released her, with a pat in the back, and made a beeline for his quarters, leaving her disappointed that they didn't keep sparing.
"Hey, Adewalé!" She called, noticing said man watching her from the upper deck. "Would you mind sparing with me?!"
"Sure." He replied, walking down towards her.
As they were both getting into fighting stances, he amusedly wondered if she had noticed Edward "fix" the front of his pants before leaving.
---___---___---___---___---___---___---
Edward didn't know if the weakness at his knees was due to the landing, the giggle, or the small hand he was pulling through the streets of Havana. The female pirate looked behind her occasionally to check the guards right behind them. Edward turned a sharp right, but she had different plans.
"Meet you at the ship!" She yelled at him, before releasing herself from his grasp and running in the opposite direction, calling the attention of most of the guards away from him. Edward tried to call her back, but the few guards that were chasing him had a slightly higher priority on his to-do list.
After luring them to a hidden corner and killing them or knocking them out (a faster option than outrunning then, in Edward's opinion), he tried to find her, worried that something might happen to her.
He could have headed back to the Jackdaw, but he wanted to make sure she was alright. He knew she could defend herself, but he didn't know if she could handle all the guards that followed her.
The longer he spent running through the rooftops of Havana without finding her, the more worried he got, all kinds of bad scenarios running through his head. Only after about an hour did he give up and return to the ship, so the crew could help him on his search. When he was nearing the port, the Jackdaw already on sight, he noticed another figure jumping a few building away.
A sigh of relief left him when he recognized her robes. She waved at him when she noticed him, big grin on her face. The distraction made her trip and almost fall from the roof, much to his horror, but she held on to the edge, and pulled herself up with a sheepish smile. She sat on the same spot for a while, recovering from the fright, and Edward headed towards her, angry and ready to scold her for her recklessness.
"Edward! That was so fun, we have to do that again!" She said, excited, when he landed on the roof she was in.
"Are you insane?! What were you thinking, running off on your own?!" He scolded, arms crossed as her gave her a stern glare.
"Edward, relax, there was no problem, I lost them easily, I just figured I could lose them better by blending with the crowd, and you could run faster without dragging me round." She explained, before adding with a giggle "And it was fun!" Edward pinched the bridge of his nose.
" 'twas stupid! I was worried."
"Aw~! Big captain Kenway was worried with wee old me~!" She joked. She tried to get up, but she winced when her weight landed on her feet.
"What is it?" Edward's demeanor went from stern to worried immediately. "Are you hurt?"
"My ankles hurt, I did a weird landing earlier. I'll be fine soon..." She reassured him.
"Is any of that blood yours?" She shook her head, while he searched her body for any wounds.
"No, one of the guards just caught up to me and I had to deal with it. I'm fine." She got away from him and slowly walked to a nearby ladder. "Let's get back to the ship."
"What you did was stupid. " He said, and she stopped before the ladder.
"Which part?" She asked with a light smirk.
"All, but mostly the part where you attacked our target as if there were no guards." He replied, crossing his arms and returning with the stern look.
"Well, you were being all stealthy and you almost lost him, so I had to use a different tactic."
"And you had to jump from the roof while everyone was watching?" She stepped closer to him, to the point where she was right in his face.
"I got the job done. You were being too careful."
"Because I didn't want to put you in danger." She blushed at his confession "You were not ready yet."
"Well, being a coward won't do us any good if we lose sight of our target. And you can't complain much, you got some nice rewards too!" She slapped the pouch on the side of his waist, which had a lot more money than it had when they ported in Havana. A smirk grew on his face.
"When I see an opportunity, I take it." She released a clear laugh, and Edward swore his heart stopped.
"Opportunity? I didn't know that's what they called money these days."
They stared at each other in comfortable silence. Edward felt his pouch heavy on his side, but it wasn't because it was heavy, but because of what was inside. Was it a good time?
The sky was gaining an orange tint and the wind picked up, dragging to land the smell of the sea and the sound of the waves crashing into the piers a couple hundred feet away. Some strands of her hair got into her mouth and she spewed them out, making Edward laugh at her. She laughed too, once the strands were away from her lips.
Edward decided to throw caution at the wind and pulled a silver necklace from his pouch.
"Here, I got this for you." He said. She gasped in surprise "I noticed you were eyeing it earlier, so I stole it in the middle of the mess."
"I wasn't eyeing it, I just happened to glance at the woman wearing it."
"No, you were eyeing it!"
"...Okay, maybe I was eyeing it, but you didn't need to steal it for me!" She admitted with a chuckle.
"If you don't want it, we could always sell it."
"No! I'll keep it!" She slowly took the necklace from his hands and checked the little details on the teardrop-shaped pendent, with a (Favorite Gem) in the middle. "You really didn't have to steal it, though. You don't own me anything."
"Don't I own you a ship?" He asked jokingly.
"Yes, you do, but a single necklace won't pay for it." She joked. "You'll have to try harde-!"
Next thing she knew, his lips were crashing into hers. Edward's kiss was slow and passionate, spontaneous. She wasted no time kissing him back, heart soaring high with happiness. She wrapped her arms around his neck, one hand clutching the necklace and the other running through his hair. His were on her hips. Their lips were locked for a while, and when they split up, it felt like they had awoken from a dream.
She could see the moment he regretted his actions, while she remained stunned, trying to process the fact that her best friend just kissed her. He turned away from her and rubbed the back of his neck nervously.
"I'm sorry, (F/n), I don't know what came over me. Let's just forget it happened and get back to the Jackdaw." He apologized as he walked to the edge of the roof, preparing to jump off it.
"I like you!" She blurted in a panic, not wanting to let go of the chance. "I know I shouldn't, we're friends, but I do! And if you feel the same way, I'd like you to tell me!" He stopped a the edge and released a bittersweet chuckle.
"You can do better than me."
"I know I can, but I don't want better! Because a 'better' man would make me be stuck at home, while with you I can be myself and not be judged for it!" She exclaimed. "I... I love you, and if that kiss meant something, then you feel the same for me... right?..."
He finally looked at her, and once she looked into his eyes, she knew she had the same expression: hopeful, praying that their feeling were reciprocated.
"Of course!" He smiled. "I'd have to be blind not to love you too."
In a burst of happiness, she ran to him and hugged him with a giggle, before repaying his previous kiss with one of her own.
“I’m so glad we met again.” He admitted with a whisper, after they broke off the kiss.
“Yeah, me too...”
Adewalé watched them arrive at the ship, hands intertwined and big smiles, while she rambled to Edward of new things she had to train. The quartermaster muttered a "finally", happy his friend and superior, until a new, disturbing thought came to mind.
Knowing those two, he wondered how many nights of sleep he and the crew would lose.

Romance head canon ❤️ in all the fan fiction I read its Valkyrie initiating the relationship/kiss👄 , her flirting. I read this piece and it was like from ghastly POV and he picked up on the way skul 💀look at her. Want some head canons of skulls POV. 👀
oho do i have some shit for you
seriously anon i think this might be the longest fucking post ive ever made
the way i read the books, skul starts to realise he’s in the process of falling for val when she’s 17-18. which is dodgy in some parts of the world, and idk where you’re from anon, but in my country the age of consent is 16 so i’m cool with interpreting it like that
the first instances of like, gentle flirting, from him are in death bringer and kotw.
1. “You’re late.”
“I’m beautiful.”
“You’re always beautiful.”
“I’m always late, too.”
skulduggery is from the 1600s, and flirting back then was not as obvious as it is today. this is roughly the time where he starts complimenting her regularly on her appearance. “you’re always beautiful” is a pretty safe compliment to give any girl, especially a girl like val who’s fairly vain and aware that she’s beautiful. i think here he’s kind of. testing the water? like not openly flirting with her, but more seeing whether she’s receptive to that kind of comment coming from him? whether he should bother to keep them coming? because if she’d responded here with an immediate awkward or disgust reaction, or if she’d kind of gone “that’s a little weird, skulduggery” i bet you none of the other semi-flirty stuff in the books would’ve gone down. he would’ve backed off, immediately
but she doesn’t. she just accepts it - we don’t get a physical reaction from her, but he keeps the compliments coming so there was probably some vaguely positive physical cue, i.e. she smiled at him or something, and says, “I’m always late, too.” The ‘too’ acknowledging that she knows she’s always beautiful. Thank you. Which let’s be real, is a response to half-flirty compliments that he’s probably used to from china. She’s not told him to fuck off, so that’s a positive.
And then he’s treated her to a gorgeous dress.
2. “The dress was long and slinky, strapless, silk and chiffon. Her shoes were gorgeous”
I’m sorry, but if you see someone as a surrogate child, you don’t buy them a sexy dress. You just don’t, it’s inappropriate and wrong. And yeah, you might buy a dress like that for your platonic friend if you know that’s your friend’s style, but val isn’t a regular dress-wearer. so chances are, he bought her something he’d like to see her in, and hoped she’d like it. It’s not mentioned in the book, but it’s also possible he had to actually buy her underwear at this point. “Long, slinky, strapless” dresses usually require panties that don’t leave underwear lines, and strapless bras. Since val isn’t a regular wearer of slinky clothing or dresses, chances are she doesn’t actually own any suitable underwear for this dress. So either she went without, which would’ve been kind of uncomfortable for her during the whole nonsense with melancholia that went down at the requiem ball, or skulduggery bought her underwear to wear with the dress.
how does he even know what size she is? either he asked ghastly, or he paid a lot of attention to that naked reflection.
“I thought I’d spoil you,” he says. We know skulduggery spends a lot of money on the important woman in his life. China says he used to bring her priceless books and artifacts which would’ve cost him an arm and a leg, and it’s probably safe to say he bought her outfits, too, while they were together. He doesn’t seem to spend his money on people who don’t matter to him (as much). You don’t see him splashing out to get tanith a set of protective clothes, and he doesn’t so much as take elsie through the burger king drive-thru. Yet, I googled how much it costs to remodel a house and the answers I’m getting are all in like the £40,000 to £75,000 bracket, which might be out, but since I know nothing about house renovation, I’m gonna run with that. So he spent over £40,000 on doing up his house so val could essentially live there and spend more time with him. You don’t spend that kind of money on someone you’re not planning on having there long-term.
He also implies that he would’ve gone to Ghastly to get val’s requiem ball dress if he hadn’t been so busy. ghastly’s clothes are implied to be expensive. it’s one thing for skul to buy val protective clothes - she’s his responsibility, and he wants to keep her safe, it’s an understandable expense. but splashing out just to buy her a fuckin expensive dress tailor-made by ghastly just to spoil her? dude got feelings
i mean let’s also take into account that that was what dudes did in ye olde days, right? they were the primary source of income. in 1600-whatever, the girl would’ve moved in with the guy, put her own touch on the home, and it would’ve been her husband’s responsibility to “keep” her; to pay for her clothes, her food, her entertainment, etc
What’s val done in the past few years?
“Moved into” skul’s house - not full-time, but it’s implied she spends a lot of time there, put her own touch on it via having it entirely fucking remodeled to suit her, what with having the bathroom, kitchen and bedroom put in, and spent a whole lot of skul’s money. he spoils her. in exchange, she makes his house into a home - probably just by being there, bc lets face it this is val and she’s no domestic goddess. but it mimics, i like to think, the way he would’ve treated his wife. money no object to make her happy
if you look at it like this, he’s basically treating her as though they’re in a relationship already. i doubt he’s actually taking that seriously and deluding himself that they’re a thing, but again, he’s testing it out. how does she react to him treating her like this? does she have issues with it? is she comfortable? and she’s totally chill with it, so another positive
There’s also this:
3. “Now she had her own bedroom, there was a bathroom with a huge shower and a kitchen with a fully-stocked fridge.”
So not only did he refurbish for her, but he refurbished with quality. Which, yeah, it’s skulduggery, he’s got expensive tastes, but tbh i think he let her pick out everything. which means she picked all this expensive shit that looks great but cost him a mint and he doesn’t care, bc this is how he shows affection
4. “sometimes she wondered how much money she’d cost him with her insistence on refurbishment”
So refurbishing was val’s idea. The fact that she wanted skul’s house changed for her probably came across as like. not flirty, exactly? but to him, she’s saying that she wants to spend more time here. more time with him. she wants his home to be her home. he probably saw that as encouragement, tbh, he was so happy about it?
then in kotw, we have this:
5. “Remember that sorcerer who went missing?”
Valkyrie raised her head off the pillow even as she woke. For a moment she didn’t know where she was, then she recognised the house on Cemetery Road…
“Patrick Xebec,” Skulduggery said, standing in the morning sunlight that streamed in through the window.
he’s. in her room. while she’s asleep. at this point, they have no boundaries. skulduggery would’ve been raised that to come into a young lady’s room while she is abed is just. not done. the only woman it would’ve been appropriate for him to do that with would be his wife, or a lover - women he’d essentially share a room with anyway (don’t quote me on this, but i think a lot of couples in his era had separate bedrooms as standard? and then just slept together when they wanted to? because a lot of marriages were out of convenience and not love?). but im pretty sure there’s also another scene of him doing it again - coming into her room before she’s up and waking her up by talking at her - so either he’s just utterly lost his sense of propriety over the years or he’s so comfortable with her and she with him that they no longer have that boundary
6. “She took a quick shower, dressed, and Skulduggery had a bowl of cereal waiting for her when she emerged.”
so not only is he a-ok with coming into her room while she’s still in it, they’ve also got into a morning routine with each other. he makes her breakfast. it’s wonderfully domestic, a little gesture of affection in his very understated way. skulduggery is an over-the-top personality who doesn’t do emotions very well, and val has no subtlety. he’s treating her like he’d treat his significant other, but because he hasn’t actually smacked her in the face with a brick stamped with “I LIKE YOU” in big letters, she’s not picking up what he’s throwing out there
it’s also worth mentioning that like. in death bringer and kotw, he starts touching her a lot more. hugging her, or letting her hug him. that scene where he pushes her up against a wall and kinda feels her up to check if she was shot, even though she’s wearing protective clothes and so he knows none of the bullets would’ve hurt her. that bit in kotw(?) where she gets stuck in the hole and he has to pull her out. it’s pointed out on the skulduggery forums in the valdug thread that if you pull someone out by their underarms, like he tries to, you’re gonna touch boob. you just are. it’d be shockingly difficult not to. and again, no negative reaction from her, not even an awkward joke
again, for the most part of skul’s life, male-female physical contact was very limited. he didnt touch her very often for the first half of the series, and i think that had a lot to do with the fact that in his mind, it would’ve been inappropriate. touching is something you do with the girl you’re courting. so like, he’ll hug her if she needs to be hugged, or comfort her if she needs it or whatever, but there’s no casual touching. but in the last four books, he touches her an awful lot. because he is kinda courting her
kotw i think is the point where skul stops dodging around on the edge of flirting, and starts actually flirting. and tries to let her know he’s got feelings for her, because he’s a whole lot less subtle in this book. there’s this whole exchange:
7. “It’s just, if you were feeling somehow…unattractive…”
“Sorry?”
“I don’t mean unattractive,” he said quickly. “I mean, if you were thinking that maybe you’ll always be alone -”
“You think I’ll always be alone?”
“That’s not what I meant.”
We know that when skulduggery was alive, he had a stutter. this isn’t a stutter, but he’s definitely nervous, and you can tell? i can count the number of times skulduggery was visibly nervous in the books on one hand. he’s a very confident, very self-assured man. but this is the first time he’s kind of made it obvious to val that he likes her. this is him kind of going, i’m an available romantic prospect, valkyrie. but she doesn’t let him get it out, she won’t let him finish. he phrases it wrong and loses his chance.
8. “I was only trying to be sensitive.”
she’s hurt him. she won’t let him talk, won’t let him tell her how he feels. she “doesn’t need him sensitive”. she’s kind of. pretty much completely dismissed that he’s also a person with feelings, and she’s hurt him.
9. “you can’t run from your feelings!”
“i can walk from them.”
he doesn’t deny that there are feelings to walk from. by now he’s picked up that valkyrie is dense as a fucking wall, so the flirting is getting a little bit more obvious. and even though she just hurt him, and he’s now kinda pissed at her as a result, he still acknowledges that he has feelings
and then, in lsodm, we get this absolute fucking gem
10 “tight trousers don’t count.”
he’s given up, everyone. this is outright flirting, it even sounds flirty on the audiobook, he knows he’s not fucking getting anywhere and now he’s just not even bothering to be subtle
and then, going totally outside of canon, i like to think that the Big Reveal is essentially skulduggery says something even more obvious than the tight trousers comment, and val kind of pauses and goes, “are you flirting with me?” and skulduggery is just like
HAVE BEEN FOR THREE YEARS NOW BUT THANKS FOR NOTICING

Part 1
February 22, 2016 (366 days before) Catching a cab three streets up from the warehouse, Lin rode to the hospital, his heart racing a mile a minute. God if what that man, Crowley, had said was true, you’d be alive, but he’d also have a timer on his life. If what Crowley said was true, in precisely a year. He’d be gone.
As they arrived, his heart in his throat, he pictured you awake, hell even you being alive would be good enough for him. Pulling out his wallet he paid the driver and tipped him generously before walking back into the place he had raced out of earlier. “Mr. Miranda!” The lady at the front desk called him over, “We’ve been trying to get in contact with you for the past hour. Something happened. She’s awake and asking for you. Room 372.” The race down the hallway seemed quicker than last time he had completed it, and he realized that it because he knew you were okay, that you and the baby were okay. God, there was a little human he had created that was going to eventually live, and he would only be around to see it for four months. Four months that he would treasure his daughter or son. The door of the hospital room was ajar, and he could hear the humming of various machines. You might be alive, but you were still hurt. It wasn't even your fault. You had the right of way, and so you attempted to cross the street, but a cab had hit a patch of ice and couldn't stop in time before it plowed right into you.
Lin pushed the door open the rest of the way, and suddenly he was by your side. “I can’t believe you're okay,” he whispered, crying into his hands. “Last time I was here I thought you were dead.”
“I’m okay, just a little banged up.” He grabbed your hand, trying to be careful around the IV set in your arm.
“Is there something you want to tell me?” he asked rubbing his thumb on the skin on the back of your hand, his red eyes staring into yours like he was looking for an answer.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”
“The doctor found something interesting in one of your tests that I thought you might already know.” Seeing the confused look in your eye, taking the hand he was holding he gently set it on your lower abdomen.
May 28th, 2016 (270 days before) The vows Lin had written felt like a weight in his pocket as he fumbled with tying his tie. The room he was getting ready in seemed smaller than when he had entered it.
“Woah, Lin. Take it, steady man.” Suddenly Chris’s fingers were at his neck, retying the tie that Lin’s nervous fingers had mangled. “I don’t understand why you’re so nervous. It’s not like you haven’t been planning this for months.”
“I just- What if she doesn’t want to marry me.”
“Are you being serious right now? Because honestly if it’s even possible that girl loves you almost more than you love her.”
In the room you were getting ready in, you didn't have the same doubts. You knew Lin loved you. Lin had been so great with helping to plan the wedding and dealing with you being pregnant that obviously, he did.
And so as you walked out of the room to walk down the aisle, you weren’t worried about Lin being at the end of it; you were terrified of falling on your face. You only stumbled once, but thankfully it was right into the arms of the love of your life and knew that life your life was going to be fine if Lin was in it.
June 12th, 2016 (255 days before) Trying to find a dress for the Tony's while five months pregnant was about as difficult as you would have imagined but knowing you had to be there to support your husband and his act of creation, but you powered through.
You might have been cutting it a little close, but the dress you had decided on with Pippa and Jasmine's help was worth it.
When Lin finally saw you in your dress the night of the awards, he gasped before moving over to you and swinging you around. “Careful,” you warned.
“You look beautiful,”
During the limo ride, Lin must have been nervous, his leg bouncing and his hands balled into fists.
“Hey,” you whispered, pulling one of his hands into both of yours. “Hamilton's nominated sixteen times. If you don't win something, it must have been rigged.”
The limo was pulling onto the road, and suddenly Lin was opening the door into the chaos and pulling you across the seat and into the craziness.
You wished you could avoid the red carpet, but Lin's hand on your arm kept you steady and sure that you would be okay, while he chatted with the press.
You watched later as the ‘little musical’ your husband had written won awards for almost every category it was nominated in. You weren’t surprised when your husband even ended up taking home 2 of the awards for himself.
July 9th, 2016 (228 days before) Lin’s last night as Hamilton started out as most days in the Miranda household do, with Lin waking you up by singing whatever song was stuck in his head. Today it was Helpless, and as soon as he saw that you were up, he pulled you out of bed and swung you around the apartment.
After making a breakfast fit for an entire royal family, you were eating for two, after all, you and Lin took the A-line farther into the city and parted ways close to the Richard Rodgers where you took a turn that led you deeper into the city towards work. “I’ll see you at the show,” Lin whispered, kissing the hand he was holding before letting you go.
Throughout the day as Lin was saying not goodbye but so long for now to some of his coworkers, some of his best friends. He tried to picture himself anywhere other than where he was, and he couldn’t even imagine it.
He felt more energized during the night’s performance almost as though him knowing you were in the crowd watching him made him two hundred times better than the perfect he already was, and when he was making his final bow he sought out your eyes in the crowd.
As you waded through the crowd of people in the lobby of the Richard Rodgers after the show, you made your way backstage. Stopping into the girl’s dressing room, you watched Pippa’s teary goodbye with the girls who played her sisters, and you almost began crying when she turned her attention to you in the doorway.
“There you are!” A breathless Daveed exclaimed almost pulling you out of your embrace with Pippa, “Lin’s been looking for you everywhere, and he was too scared of being mobbed to go out into the lobby.
“Bye Pippa! I’ll see you for pie in a couple of days. Right?” She nodded and let you go. Knocking at the door to his dressing room, you heard a muffled, “Come in,” before you pushed open the door. You almost burst out laughing when you did. Lin was stuck. One of his arms out of the top of his Hamilton costume, but his other arm and his head were hopelessly tangled in the fabric.
“Geez Lin, What am I going to do with you?”
October 12th, 2016 (133 days before) The day his daughter was born, Lin was very busy. He had been writing the intro for a talk show he was appearing in the next week while you slept in the next room. Little did he know that within his next few hours his whole life was going to change or that you would end up breaking his hand in the process.
Aria Grace Miranda was born on a partly cloudy Wednesday in the middle of October kicking and screaming with all ten fingers and all ten toes. But later as friends and family stopped by to see the new little one they would remark on how she was the sweetest, most well-behaved baby they had ever seen, her parents would smile at each other and know that they were possibly never going to get a full night’s sleep ever again. November 2, 2016 (112 days before) Lin walked briskly, his coat flapping in the cold winter’s breeze. Ducking inside the open door of a nearby bookstore he decided to roam through the sections, as usual, when he came to the children’s section, he ran his fingers across the spines, picturing his baby girl hopefully asleep in her crib. He would only ever know her as a baby, but you would be there for everything, her first word when she started walking.
In 10 years, his little princess wouldn’t be able to determine his voice from the next guy’s. Taking out his phone, he grabbed the closest book on the shelf, “Goodnight Moon,” and flipping to the audio recorder, started reading.
After he had done 3 or 4 books, an employee of the bookstore came over and just watched him for a couple of minutes. “Is there a reason why you’re reading children’s books into your phone, sir?”
“I’m-” how was he going to explain that he was reading children’s books into his phone because in a little under four months he’d be dead. “-I’m sick and I only have a few months to live, and I want my daughter to be able to hear my voice reading a bedtime story to her every night for as long as she wants one.”
“We actually have better recording equipment in the back, if you'd like to use it. I could talk to my boss and see if she'd let you.”
Lin ended up recording almost every children's book in the store in the 3 and a half months that he had left, keeping them on DVDs that he kept hidden in a box in the back of the closet that you shared.
When he got home that night though he kissed you on the cheek and set the baby on his lap to watch the Little Mermaid, wishing that he'd have forever, he snuggled closer to your side, hoping for a miracle but knowing it probably wasn't going to come.
December 25th, 2016 (59 days before) When you were little, you remembered waking up as early as you could to open your presents, but as you grew older, it became nicer and nicer to sleep in as late as possible. Usually, you could, Lin was someone who liked his sleep, but this Christmas, Ari had kept you both awake all night with a fever and a cough and since you were already up you decided to do Christmas early before the rest of the world was awake.
For hours it was just you, Lin, and the baby, watching Christmas movies together on the couch while outside the sun began to rise over the George Washington Bridge.
Later when your house was filled with rowdy nephews and both pairs of parents, the opening of the actual presents began while everyone munched on the cookies that were made with loving care by Abuela the night before.
And as everyone sat around the Christmas tree Lin realized that this might be the last time his whole family was together like this before what was probably his death. Lin hugged the nephew sitting on his lap a little tighter, and as everyone was leaving, he made sure to let them know how much he loved them.
December 31st, 2016 (53 days before) The clock ticked steadily closer to midnight on New Year's Eve, and for the first time in years, Lin wasn’t drunk out of his mind. Instead of the loud music and dancing, the tone was decidedly quieter, but the apartment was still filled with some of your closest friends. Lin, Chris, and Tommy were out on the balcony watching the sky for the fireworks that were sure to come later, while you and Chris’s wife were trying to get the baby back to sleep because the noise of the ‘party’ had woken her up. Javi, Anthony, and Lac were just talking in the kitchen with a couple of beers, while “the Schuyler sisters” were playing a card game at the folding table a couple of feet away from you.
When you finally got the baby to sleep you placed her back to sleep in the crib, kissing her forehead before turning off the lights and shutting the door.
“Did you finally get her to sleep?” Lin asked out on the balcony after you walked out to join him. Staring up at the night sky, he tried not to imagine what New Years next year would be like. Last year he had enjoyed making resolutions for what his life would be like in this new year. He would never have imagined it would lead to 2 Tonys and a Grammy and his marriage to you and a baby. This year he just wanted to live longer than the time he was given.
As the time ticked closer to midnight, everyone from inside filtered out onto the balcony. Counting down the seconds, he pulled you closer to him and as the clock struck midnight he pressed a kiss to your lips.
February 20th, 2016 (2 days before) “You haven’t been to your parent’s house in ages, y/n,” Lin spoke, coming up behind you and wrapping his arms around you. “I’m sure they miss you and the last time they saw Aria was Thanksgiving. She has a tooth now, and she can roll over. When they were here last, she couldn’t really do much.” “What’s brought this on honey? Are you trying to get rid of us.”
“Your mom called me and told me she missed you. She was so used to getting to see you all the time before we got married. Now she says she sees you maybe once a month.” He smiled at you before leading you over to the couch and taking your hands in his. “I won’t mind if you go, you know. I know you miss her too. Plus Chris and I were going to have a guy’s night out, so you wouldn’t be missing anything.” In Lin’s mind, he was torn between begging you not to go, because he didn’t want to die alone, and hoping that you would leave because he didn’t think he could live with the fact that you would watch him die.
Picking up the baby off the floor where she was lying on her back, he smiled at her as she reached over and tried to grab a handful of your hair. “Hi Ari,” you cooed at her.
“What if we leave tomorrow, early, and then maybe Ari and I will stay there for another day or two so that you and Chris can have that man day you’ve been talking about lately.”
Lin gave a sad smile, that ‘man day,’ you were talking about would probably just be him and Chris eating dinner and him trying to let Chris know how much he thought of him as a brother.
That night Lin held you as you slept, trying not to think of it as being the last time he would see you sleeping. One of the last times he would see you ever.
February 21st, 2016 (1 day before) Lin may have been the one who was trying to send away his wife and infant daughter away before what may as well be his death, but that doesn’t mean saying goodbye to them didn’t hurt. It was so very painful.
Your bags were packed and in front of the door before Lin had gotten out of bed in the morning, which wasn’t surprising. Lin hadn’t been sleeping very well as the months got closer to the end of his deal.
Before you left, he made sure to kiss both of you, you on the lips, Ari on the forehead, and told you exactly how much he loved you. “More than from here to the end of the universe and back.”
The rest of the day Lin spent getting his affairs in order. He took the box of DVDS that he'd hidden in the back of the closet and placed them on the dining room table along with his will and a note that as Lin had written, he’d burst into tears.
Y/N, I feel like knowing this was going to happen beforehand should have prepared me for the thought of never seeing you again. After all, I did this for you and Ari without this the both of you would have been in a grave and I just couldn’t live with that. My heart doesn't want to believe it's true, but no matter what my heart believes, know that I love you with every fiber of my being and that as my time grows closer that it's the only thing keeping me from falling apart. I love you from the end of the universe and back. Lin
Lin tried as hard as he could to be the person who no matter the circumstance was always smiling, but eating lunch with his best friend hours before was something that he couldn’t quite shake.
Chris noticed that Lin was acting strange around halfway through lunch and started watching him, making mental notes on how he was acting to talk to you about later. Something was wrong with Lin and although it was probably due to what happened to you last year he needed to know what was wrong with him so the both of you could fix it. Lin telling him that he loved him like a brother as they were leaving the restaurant made alarm bells go off in his brain but by the time he had processed what he’d said Lin was too far away to go after.
As the day went on Lin grew more and more fidgety, and if someone on the street had happened to bump into him, he probably would have snapped.
He found himself in Central Perk in the minutes before midnight, the howls of dogs close by. Taking out his phone as the sound moved closer, he called you, but it went straight to voicemail. “I love you and Ari more than anything in this life. Please. Please don’t do anything stupid.”
As the clock ticked over to midnight, the howls increased all of a sudden and then there was the pain. So much more than he would’ve imagined before and then he felt nothing.
February 22nd, 2016 You got the call telling you something had happened at 3 in the morning, and before you knew it you were on the way to the hospital though when you arrived and spotted Chris you knew something had happened.
"No." you whispered, hanging onto Chris because at this point he was the only thing keeping you upright.
"What happened?" you heard Chris ask as you dissolved into sobs.
"It looks to be some sort of animal attack, certainly something we've never seen before this far into the city."
Of course, it would be Lin's luck that the week you were visiting your parents would be the week that there'd be a pack of wild animals roaming the city.
As the minutes passed the tightness in your chest refused to let up. It would probably never let up. For the rest of your life, you'd be dealing with the grief of your husband dying.
Your mother called a couple of minutes later having heard you rush out the door in a frenzy after you had gotten the call. You couldn't talk to her, so Chris took over. He guided you to a chair and then explained what had happened to your parents trying to stop himself from crying in the process. When he was done, he took you home, neither of you noticing the box or papers on the dining room table.
Curling up in bed with one of Lin's shirts you cried until you fell asleep and then cried some more, barely eating.
February 27th, 2016 (5 days after) It had been almost a week since what had happened to Lin, and it was as if a fog had descended on your life and your daughter was the only thing that let you breathe. Even at four months her smile and personality was so much like her fathers, and you knew that eventually the two of you would heal together.

im not on here enough to do one every day. so im just gonna do all of them right now.
1. ive been self harming for almost 4 years. i had first started because of bullying and self-esteem problems. i developed depression and anxiety. and i thought it was the only thing that could help
2. my left, lower, arm. thats where i had first started also...
3.i honestly have no motivation. ive tried to recover. but everytime i start to go crazy and i relapse it never lasts long.
4.yes...because of the fact, i cant last a full week without doing it. if someone takes my razor i freak out and start throwing things around my room trying to find it. id do anything to have it back. or to get a new one...i hate that im like this. but i cant stop it.
5. the pain after doing it. going into the shower, it stings and it hurts. but i always just remind myself of why i did it.
6. i love the release i feel while doing it. it calms me. it helps me...but then i lose control and soon my whole arm or leg is covered in cuts and blood.
7. i dont think i have 10. but ill list what i do. i color, sing, draw, read, watch youtube, write, and take pictures of things, and sometimes go for long walks.
8. honestly no one has ever said something supportive to help me stop. other then the basic. “everything will be fine” and “stay strong”
9. yea...sometimes. im not even sure why i do it. i have pictures on my laptop of some. sometimes if i ever tell anyone they ask to see it. so i take a picture. i just forget to delete them.
10. at one point i wasnt ashamed about them...but now thats a whole new story. i hate my scars. i usually dont want anyone to see them. but i cant always hide them with certain shirts. i dont wear shorts so my legs stay fully hidden.
11. my friends bathroom... it was a sleepover. i think it was around 2 in the morning. they were sleeping. i wasnt, i was thinking too much. i went to the bathroom and found something sharp and did it, and got rid of what i used. i didnt get caught.
12. no one ever goes in my room so most of the time they are on my little stool next to my bed. if not its in my drawer or in my colored pencil kit. (it came with a pencil sharpener. so i took that out. and just put it back after.
13. that it is a horrible addiction. and that i dont think ill ever be able to stop...
14. i think at one point, there was a youtuber that inspired me. but then 1 week later i relapsed. and i couldnt keep trying anymore.
15. youtube, and google....sometimes i look at peoples scars. comparing mine to theirs....but then i just call myself a pussy because theirs is worse. i dont know why im like this....
16. please. im begging you....dont make that first cut....you will regret it so much....you will become addicted and you will hate yourself so much for that tiny little scrape. that soon becomes open bleeding wounds. just please. dont do it....people will be hurt by your actions. just dont be like me...
17. yea...a few of my friends either have or still are self harming.
18. im so proud of you...you did it. right now, it feels like im never going to get better...but if you are reading this right now. that means...we made it...we really did. or maybe, we are still struggling, but guess what, we are still alive. maybe we will never be ok...but at least we are keeping others happy by this...
19. 1, no more scars and cuts to hide. 2, family wont be disappointing. and honestly other then that i dont really know anything else.
20. the time that i had the worse episode of my life so far. both arms and legs cut up. i was so close to suicide. i had so many cuts....i think i still have a picture from that....that picture is stuck in my head forever anyways...
21. ive tried many times...and im honestly not trying anymore, because everytime i try, i fail, so whats the point of trying.
22. at the park with the big pond, theres a table under a little roof thing looking over the whole pond and park. i sit there and think, and write.
23. F.E.A.R, has two meanings. Forget everything and run. and Face everything and rise. the choice is yours.
24. yelling, because of my father, and then my step father. any kind of negative talk towards me, because of bullying. and people joking about depression/suicide/selfharm. for obvious reasons.
25. i try to ignore them. i just dont want to be reminded about all that crap.
26. when someone tells me they love me. and i can tell they really mean it. or just the simple things...like sitting on the top of a parking garage watching the sun set.
27. i think the longest i went without self harming was 2 and a half weeks.
28. i dont know, just try to last longer without self harming, but so far that isnt going to well.
29. yea i think so.
30.i cant add anymore pictures in this. plus everytime i look at a picture of myself i just pick out every small little flaw possible...
