The whole Once-ler family is working full tilt!

Here's my full piece for the VK Onceler Zine! I was very lucky to get to be a part of it...🥹 I used concept art as my inspiration this time: [link] Keep reading below for my process vid and all my director's commentary!

Thank you for being curious! Here's a video of my WIPs:

Deadlines were TIGHT for this zine! We were given only 2 months (compared to the 6 months I had on the previous onceler zine), so to make sure I could finish on time, I decided to do only base colours and lighting, with almost no shading anywhere. Still, trying to balance all the colours took the longest for me, as you can see in the vid. xP

Also idk if anyone noticed, but for the face I chose to use an already existing onceler doodle: [link] Why? Well, why not! I really liked that doodle and I didn't want it to go to waste. 😆

Things that I enjoyed sneaking in:

-the golden spiral! Vaguely, at least! At the very least I hope your eyes can follow the order of thneed production, from the fallen tree at the window to the tuft harvesting to the thread spinning, to knitting the thneed and then drawing up plans for bigger and better things, and then ending with him pulling on his iconic glove to show he's going to take control now

-15 cents, a nail, and a great great great grandfather snail, as well as a tin pail since that's where you're supposed to deposit your payment

-combining things from the 2012 movie and concept art, the 1972 movie, and the 1971 book (e.g. that funny wrench he uses to fix pipes)

-Miss O'Schmunce-ler! You can see from the vid that I added the bracelet pretty late, because it was a late decision to have a Miss O'Schumunce-ler somewhere. I chose her to be the one picking up the pencil in the end, since she's pretty good with a pencil in the movie hehe. You guys can pretend the arms holding the phone is Miss Funce-ler.

-a thneed, a seed, and a (grickle grass) weed on the floor. The thneed is just the first of many that will soon create a giant pile. The seed lies forgotten in the corner. The weed is foreshadowing the future.

-hinting that Lorax and Once-ler were actually good friends, like they were in the Lorax musical stageplay. 🥺 I kept this part of the script in my mind for this piece:

This was aftermath Once-ler talking to the Lorax, reminiscing on their good times...and also being stupid and inconsiderate because the Lorax was in fact there all along as his friend, trying to warn him of what was going to happen. 😔

So in my zine piece we're witnessing a peaceful time before all the real biggering really starts. I like to think that in this scene, the Lorax had been sitting on the Once-ler's lap, holding his gloves for him and having a nice chat together with maybe some harmless bickering, but then the Once-ler gets a phone call so he cuts their convo short and rolls his chair over to the window to answer it. Putting business over friendship as usual, of course. Inspo for the lap sitting comes from this fanart by Emi that I love: [link]

What else...the parts that I'm proud of the most are the stool (I spent 2 days just drawing this stool), the curtains, the fact that I was able to include every truffula colour, and the Once-ler's pose. I was close to giving up on that pose because I had no idea how to draw it but I'm glad that I tried again. I wanted to show him at ease during a stage in his life that we never got to see much: the happier and more innocent days of his biggering when he only had a small shop. 😊

Man poor Yang's colours remind me of the life coliurs (minus the green) at this point (her brown dress in that one piece of official art 😭) but blood is deffo a close second.

Silver eyed warrior powers being doom coded is really interesting, and fitting! I just remembered how Maria also lost her eyes and almost died from that same encounter in her past because of them.

It also sorta reminds me of Mituna, weirdly? how he (and Sollux) as doom players have incredible powers that exist to burden them, and are the reason or the place they are hurt from (Sollux being blinded, Mituna and his Broken psiioniics from his mystery encounter) (man if only ruby was a troll, she is so goldblood coded 😫, to me atleast (<- biased Gemini))

Adding onto the bit about sollux's bees, similarly ruby (and Maria) are given death imagery. Maria literally being "the grim reaper" and ruby's scythe 👀.

Also yess it's insane how similar v9 feels to homestuck. The whole ascention thing feels like a more fucked up framing of what God teiring is personally.

To be completely honest, I think you should go with page or prince (or wherever you want) for ruby regardless of gendered classes! alot of the fandom has rejected the idea altogether.

Take my hand, you can do whatever you want forever. Plus ruby is the short haired protag of a magical girl esque anime, she can have a little gender fuckery, as a treat :P

SUN YESS. Idk how much you know about the og swk lore (granted my own knowledge is pretty sparce since I've yet to finish reading jttw and most my knowledge from lmk) but there is an interpretation that the six eared macaque is one of swk's clones that became him own individual person but like, the dark™ version of him. Kindaaa a littleeee reminds me of Dirk and hal! But I feel not having sentient clones deffo fits more w rwby!sun

I personally don't have any of my own ideas about his classpect (never got that far :( was also alot more focused on the villans at the time).

Also unrelated but because he sits right next to sun in my head, Neptune gives me page vibes, no idea on aspects but I just feel this boy is a page, any thought on him?

Also since SeaMonkeys live right next to THAT in my brain, possiblity of a shipping chart 🥺? Or any though into quadrants in terms of ships in general? (I am a huge quadrant lover I'm sorry XD)

Man I am just, so glad someone else has wanted to make a rwby x hs au (esp w more rwde leaning opinions on the show) I was getting zero notes on the messy posts I was making and most other posts were just art/memes, this is so fun I getchu 100%!!!

SIENNA MY BEST FRIEND SIENNA! Her as a jadeblood is such a cool idea! (Completely unrelated again but if you're interested "black horns white fang" a fanfic by @/uncaught-coolfish has really interesting themes that tie sienna to motherhood (also just, a really fun white fang dynamic between her, Adam and illia))

I feel like either death could work depending on how you wish to characterise the white fang and their motivations in general. If you go the "violent extremist that take things too far" route a just death can be the way to go. But if you wanna go " violent but well meaning freedom fighters that are just dealing what must be dealt to make progress" a heroic one could work. But obviously it doesn't have to be that black and white and I'm sure you'll know which one to go with once you know how she dies and add the why. if that makes sence?

Man I wish rwby canon was that alpha timeline :( istg rwby could be saved if it was homestuck volume 9 has already laid the groundwork. Someone give canon ruby rose a copy of sburb we can still salvage this XO!

what about Blake and Yang’s classpects? who do you think they would be?

I don’t think I could ever communicate to the kids of today how much better the internet and computers in general were when it was all new...

And I don’t mean like “back in my day” or anything okay I really don’t

But I was just playing windows solitaire at work, which is a game I LOVE and a game I’m quite fond of. I MUCH prefer the xp and earlier version because it’s got so fewer bells and whistles... But also because it’s not a money grab. 

The windows solitaire of today asks you to sign into your windows account, so they can best sell you windows products. It spams you with ads that auto play sounds and WON’T play unless your solitaire program is your top window you are currently clicked on. You can PAY for an ad free SUBSCRIPTION to the game. NOTE you don’t pay and get an ad free VERSION of the game. you can pay $2/mo or $14/year to get an ad free SUBSCRIPTION. 

The windows solitaire of yesteryear was 100% free to play, no ads, no fuss, no business angle. It didn’t require an internet connection (sometimes current solitaire freezes without an internet connection because it can’t play ads) and was much easier and quicker to play. 

The whole internet got real bad around 2009/2010 when EVERYTHING became monetized. Before then, everything was so much more free, more fair, easier to use. 

I know I sound like an old man screaming at the sky when I say “the internet’s best days were its first decade” but it’s not just the cute early youtube cat vids or the funny vids of newgrounds I’m talking about. It’s not just my own childhood nostalgia. It’s also because like..... The internet was a MUCH free-er place!
