i've started the raven king and adam's little oh moment when he makes ronan smile at him like he smiles at his angelic little dream-brother or his dream-mother - unguarded and vulnerable and loose and sweet - by getting cabeswater to play his terrible awful internet song

Incorrect Order Chapter 6 (Nessian AU)
Tumblr media
A/N: I'm sooo sorry I haven't been updated in more than two weeks. I had exams :/ Also, do inform me if you wanna be added/removed from the taglist! If you happen to find my storyline similar to another fic or one of yours, I'm extremely sorry, I might've just not known. All characters belong to the author Sarah J. Mass. Enjoy!
Summary: Don't first impressions always affect the way you see someone? Well, what more with the Nesta Archeron? Nesta meets Cassian at few unexpected places and to say it didn't go well was a major understatement. Certain circumstances make them become enemies to tolerable company to friends to lovers.
Trigger Warnings: Language
1572 words | Incorrect Order Masterlist | Read on AO3 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The smile Cassian plastered on his face didn’t reach his eyes. His brothers saw that. Feyre and Elain saw that. Mor and Amren knew that. He himself did. But they didn’t say anything. If it weren’t Feyre’s anniversary, he would’ve even gone home. He couldn’t though. He wouldn’t do anything that would hurt his family. So he stayed. Smiled. Joked. Laughed. Did everything he could to keep his mind from straying to a grey-eyed masterpiece.
Az and Rhys saw, he knew. They always seemed to realise everything about each other. Even if one of them had a minor headache, the other two would know. Tonight, however, none of them pushed him. They probably thought he wanted to be alone. But did he? Truly?
He wasn’t sure. He didn’t want to be alone. That would make memories of their lunch rise. Of her shirt splattered with coffee on one day and blood on another. Of her pale form laying on his bed. Of her, enjoying his food. Of their shared jokes. He didn’t think he could take that.
He wasn’t sure he wanted to be around people either. He didn’t know if he could stay around people who laughed and teased. He didn’t know if he could laugh with them and actually mean it. He didn’t know if he could anytime soon.
Cass glanced at the clock. 3.00 a.m. He smiled. Whenever they gathered around in the living room, retiring early was totally off the table. The earliest they dispersed was four in the morning.
To his right, Rhys sighed. “It’s late,” he said, tucking Feyre close to his side. “Gotta go to bed.”
He smirked, but held back the joke on the tip of his tongue. After a chorus of goodnights, Rhys and Feyre told them they could stay here tonight if they wanted to and rose to go upstairs. Feyre laughed at something Rhys said and Cass felt a pang of sadness hit him.
Sadness… and something else. He knew he shouldn’t, but he envied the both of them. How easily they bantered and teased. How smooth their relationship was. He remembered how Feyre locked herself in the cabin after Rhys proposed. He remembered how she asked Mor not to let anyone in, especially Rhys. He sighed. He felt an amount of the jealousy dissipate. Probably Nesta would get together with him after their slight misunderstanding passed. If it did.
He got up to leave when Az stopped him. “You sure you’re going back?” Cass didn’t remember telling Az that he was going back. Then again he didn't need to. Az always saw everything. “You're not that… somber.”
Ah. Cass smiled. “I'll be fine, ” he reassured. Az still didn't let him go. “I'll send you a text once I'm home,” he tried. Az sighed.
“I'll be waiting for it.”
Cass looked at Mor, drunk and blabbering before stepping out of the house. He kept replaying that memory till he reached home, keeping his mind occupied. He was scared of what would happen if he kept his thoughts idle.
He informed Az that he reached home. He didn't know why going back home felt like preparing for a battle. It probably was a battle. Between her and his self-restraint. What was at stake here was his sanity. Cass sighed. He stepped in through the threshold and welcomed the darkness that enveloped him.
***
Stop crying like a baby, Nesta repeatedly reminded herself. Why should she cry? Nothing here was her fault. Nothing.
Not the fact that she let his charmed smiles bring her guards down. Not the fact that she felt alive when he said something stupidly funny. Certainly not the fact that she was slowly falling for him.
None of it was her fault. So why should she cry? Why should she stop herself from attending her own sister's anniversary? When it was all his fault.
She shouldn't be crying. She should be thinking about ways of exploiting his weaknesses. She should think about how she would portray him as the weak one. She should think about how she was going to make him regret everything.
But how could she make him regret it when she never regretted a second of it? She hated that this was where her thoughts went first. To scheming and plotting. She thought she changed. Did she regret her wish to be good? No. She reveled in it. No, she vowed herself, I would not scheme to make him beg. I'm not that Nesta anymore. I'll never be.
She was proud of herself. She never realised her self restraint was this good.
But apparently not good enough. Her thoughts drifted back to him. No, not him. Cassian. Cauldron, it'll take some time to get used to calling him Cassian. Or maybe Cass. Feyre and Rhysand called him that. Probably she would too. She thought about what he called her. Nes. She flushed. That stupid name did stupid things to her. She pretended she didn't like it. In fact, she loved it. Somehow, she wasn't ready to tell him that yet.
***
Nesta blinked open her eyes against the morning light. Her eyes were closed? It was morning already? Huh.
It took her some time for her eyes to adjust. She screamed at what she saw. Nesta scrambled back from the looming figure of Tomas, leering at her face.
“Nesta, Nesta, ” he said in his eerie voice. It became scarier with his sing-song tone. “My Nesta.” He paused. “Though I suppose you aren't mine anymore. You were still mine last time, you know. When you handed me over to the police. ”
She bared her teeth, opened her mouth to say something when his hand closed around her throat.
“But now, I suppose I can't call you mine anymore, can I? That reminds me. Where is your bodyguard? Or is that brute your boyfriend?” He spat the last word. His hand tightened around her neck.
“Do you know what he did to me? Your bastard. Did you know how he threatened me? Did you know that he smashed my bones, that it took me this long to heal?”
Some sort of savage satisfaction filled her. The fact that Cassian did all this… she smirked. It didn't go unnoticed by Tomas. He growled, the sound sending icy fingers ghosting down her spine. She hoped she didn't have to hear it again.
His hand around her throat pushed her farther back on the bed. He drew back, she let loose a relieved breath. A mistake.
His hand cracked on her cheek. He came infinitely closer to her, his hot, rancid breath glancing off her cheeks. His hand kept tightening around her throat and she wondered how she wasn’t dead yet. It was certainly bruised now.
“Look at you. So vulnerable. So killable. I’ve imagined how I would slit your throat. So many ideas. If only I could kill you in all the ways I imagined. But do you know what is the best way I could kill you?”
Nesta let him talk. He loved to hear himself talk. She subtly looked around her room, searching for anything she could use as a weapon. She looked back at Tomas. He wasn’t talking. Did he ask her a question?
“Tell me, Nesta. Do you know what is the best way to kill you?” Nesta shook her head, his hand pressed around her throat. Tomas smiled. She cringed mentally.
“I think the best way to kill you and make it hurt is to kill you slowly. You know what makes it better? Having that bastard watch you die. Let him watch the life seep out of you. And then I’ll kill him too.” he said and she felt the room closing in. Panic was slowly rising in her.
“Now, now,” he said. She supposed he meant to be cajoling but the effect his voice gave was the exact opposite. “There’s no need to panic. I told you I’ll kill you only when your bodyguard is there.”
He pulled out a knife. She gasped and pain erupted around her throat. Her lungs were burning.
“But darling,” he said. She whimpered. She hated this. She hated that she was vulnerable here. She hated that she couldn’t do anything when her death was slowly nearing. “I didn’t say I wouldn’t hurt you.”
Then his knife struck. Nothing hurt at first. Then, fiery pain whipped through her, beginning at her arm. She screamed. Pain. There was so much pain. She screamed so loud she pondered how the whole neighborhood didn’t hear anything.
***
Nesta gasped. Her eyes darted through her room. Nothing. No one. She looked at her arm. No pain. No scars. No blood. She touched her throat. It wasn’t sore. It wasn’t swollen. She got out of bed and looked at her mirror. No bruises. She let out a frustrated sound. It was a dream. A fucking dream. Or she supposed it was a nightmare. Still. It wasn’t real.
It was still five in the morning. Still quite early. She released a breath. She wouldn’t find a cab now but she could walk. It wasn’t that far. She fixed her hair and changed her clothes. She wasn’t going because she missed him. She just didn’t want to be vulnerable again. That’s all. She just wanted to know how to defend herself. Nothing else. So Nesta went to Cassian’s house, hoping that she’s making the right choice.

1- on a scale from 0 to 10 how much does thinking about Adam and the crying makes *you* cry? for me it's 28727282829828272772828281 *insert infinity symbol * (if you didn't read cdth, sorry ignore that)
2-I love all your trc takes and I agree with every single one of them, still I can't hate gansey, his controlling/possessive tendencies are one of his biggest flaws and without them I think he would be almost perfect which is something I don't like in characters....still I fucking hate how the fandom doesn't acknowledge how manipulative he is
most characters in trc are problematic even Adam and I would fucking die for him on the spot, this man is the love of my life, my favorite character, the reason I wake up and go to sleep every day still the majority of the fandom ignores it
anyway what I'm actually curious is if you actually hate gansey and/or other characters (which is fair) or not
..... have a good day, drink water and sorry for the rant 😗✌️
hey anon!!💕 this is my first trc anon methinks so im excited abt this hdhdhfh. anyways i haven't read cdth yet so what the hell does "adam and the crying" mean because this is hdhhdhd freaking me out (in a good way don't worry i need motivation to read that book anyway) so yeah... really looking forward to that scene it sound cool (im obsessed with sad scenes, books n movies so yeah hdhdh)
and the thing abt gansey is that... i would say that i just genuinely dislike him as a character and think that his manipulative behavior is by far not his only flaw (but also him consistently making sexist jokes and just attending all of his parents' conservative tea parties or whatever doesn't sit right with me either also just generally the fact that he's rich so that already was a bad start for himbdhhdh). it's not like that i absolutely hate him to bits and that it boils my blood every time they mention him like it's cool for me that he's a character that just exists i guess but i've known enough manipulative ppl to know that gansey is just the type of guy who manipulates and gaslights his friends for years because he thinks that he has good intentions... but his behavior is just harmful to the ppl around him. so yeah that's kinda my view on the whole gansey thing

Adam Parrish
send a thing!!!
How I feel about this character: adam parrish is the light of my life and i would die for him and he’s my favorite character (not even in this series, just In General). i really love him beyond words, i love the way he’s always striving for something more, i love that he’s alternately distant and empathetic and snarky and perceptive and contemptuous and ruthless and affectionate and needy, i love his determination and i love that he wants better for himself than what he was given, i love that despite wanting to be Unknowable and a One Man Army he needs other people on a fundamental level and despite wanting to be normal (for a given rich-aglionby-boy definition of normal) he fell in love with ronan lynch, i love that he’s at once the magician and (imo) the most deeply human character in the series, i love that he saved himself and wanted to save others as soon as he realized that. I LOVE HIM. he is so quiet and still and he kept thinking he came from shame and dust but he’s so alive and wonderful and real and i’m genuinely so struck by his story every time i think about it. adam parrish is singlehandedly responsible for my level of investment in this series tbh.
All the people I ship romantically with this character: ronan
My non-romantic OTP for this character: i guess blue but like, the version that exists in my head, where instead of the horrible miscommunication and failed attempt at dating it’s just a bunch of scenes of them mocking/complaining about rich assholes together
also gansey but that’s complicated
O P A L.
My unpopular opinion about this character: idk lmao maybe that adam parrish is better than everyone else. don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion but it shouldn’t be.
One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon:i wish canon had given even the tiniest measure of attention to his partial deafness. it’s something that would obviously have affected him a lot but it basically goes totally unmentioned through most of the series and that’s annoying. i think it should have been shown to have a clear effect on his life – as much as (and paralleling) the cabeswater bargain, even, as both adam moving out of his home and adam making the sacrifice were huge decisions/turning points in his life that happened on the same day and had physical + mental consequences. also i really wonder why ronan didn’t just like… dream him a magical hearing aid or something but idk
my het ship:none
my fem/slash ship: pynch
my OTP: pynch
my OT3:none
my cross over ship:¯\_(ツ)_/¯
my kink: UH IDK i guess i like the idea that adam really loves ronan’s tattoo to an embarrassing degree and can’t stop staring at it/touching it (i mean, it was the first thing he wanted to see when he had access to ronan basically). ronan has no idea where this came from but loves that adam loves it and is rather surprised and pleased in general. also, adam is incredibly touch-starved and can’t keep his hands off ronan when they’re finally together and ronan’s caught off guard by that as well. (again, this is basically canon though?) other than that i don’t particularly have any lmao with pynch im vanilla and i honestly just want them to be super gentle and soft and earnest with each other and cuddle and tell each other how much they love each other sdfkhjsdkkh
a head cannon fact:so adam is bi and he figures it out pretty early on (though in the beginning there’s still that question of ‘am i attracted to this snazzy rich male magazine model or do i just want to be him’) and then he just accepts it as like, a fact about himself and doesn’t really think of it as a good or bad thing. in general his sexuality isn’t a super big deal to him bc he has more pressing things to worry about, and he does think about it sometimes but only really reflects on it later, after he gets together with ronan and they finally talk about their sexuality (which they definitely do at some point, especially since accepting it was such a huge part of ronan’s character growth). i’m not saying he couldn’t have some internalized bullshit about it but imo that would be more related to wanting to be the default Typical Rich Heterosexual Man in a Business Suit than being ashamed of liking boys in itself. i like the idea of adam knowing he’s bi without having to go through any particular angst about it, he already has enough of that.
and speaking of which (to answer one of the questions above again), i also wish that in canon adam’s bisexuality had been more clearly stated. tbh in my Ideal Fix-It of the series we would have known (or at least been able to extrapolate from clear evidence) that adam was bi by the end of trb but whatever lol
my gender bend: everyone is a girl and ava parrish meets blue sargent before aglionby bc they’re both waitresses at nino’s (replacing the factory job, though she still fixes cars at boyd’s). they become best friends and talk shit about raven girls together, even after ava becomes one. possibly they try to date for a while but they break up soon and amicably, before ava goes to aglionby, so there’s no adam(ava)-blue-gansey love triangle involved at all bc that shit is just tiring. idk how this affects everything else i just want a wholesome adam(ava)/blue friendship free of pointless drama :’) also blue is a lesbian and she and ronan eventually bond over this. ronan notices ava early on whenever gansey & co go to nino’s and develops this vague distant crush on her but ava doesn’t notice ronan (maybe?) and then once ava transfers to aglionby ronan has an entire crisis about it.
anyway in my head ava has double braids and freckles and she’s as still and elegant as ever and ronan can’t stop staring at her hands (so everything is the same lol). one thing i guess is that she hates makeup and can’t stand the feeling of it on her face – she can’t really afford it anyway but ronan lends her some of her dream makeup for the dc trip and she’s not used to it and spends the whole time feeling painted-on and wrong, and it adds to the frustration and the dissociation and cabeswater’s tugging that builds up until everything comes crashing down. this is 100% just me projecting bc i despise makeup and cant even speak normally with lipstick on and i lowkey have a complex about it lmfao she loves seeing ronan’s makeup get all mussed up (from kissing :D) though, and she likes the way ronan wears hers – it’s a statement just like the shaved head and tattoo, not to look pretty or fit a standard, but like war paint, like art, screaming out for the world’s attention.

The Raven Boys
Tumblr media
Synopsis:
"'There are only two reasons a non-seer would see a spirit on St. Mark's Eve,' Neeve said. 'Either you're his true love...or you killed him.'"
It is freezing in the churchyard, even before the dead arrive.
Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue herself never sees them — not until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks directly to her.
His name is Gansey, and Blue soon discovers that he is a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.
But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can't entirely explain. He has it all — family money, good looks, devoted friends — but he's looking for much more than that. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents all the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul who ranges from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher of the four, who notices many things but says very little.
For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She never thought this would be a problem. But now, as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.
From Maggie Stiefvater, the bestselling and acclaimed author of the Shiver trilogy and The Scorpio Races, comes a spellbinding new series where the inevitability of death and the nature of love lead us to a place we've never been before.
Title: The Raven Boys Series: The Raven Cycle Author: Maggie Stiefvater ISBN: 0545424933 (ISBN13: 9780545424936) Pages: 408 pages (Paperback) Published: July 30th 2013 by Scholastic Inc. (first published September 18th 2012) Characters: Blue Sargent, Richard "Dick" Campbell Gansey III, Adam Parrish, Ronan Lynch, Noah (The Raven Cycle) Setting: Henrietta, Virginia (United States) Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance, Paranormal, Magic
First off let me address the things that I was expecting this book to be all about:
Poor girl meets rich boy and falls in love (kind of a forbidden love trope)
Insta-love ( I mean the description straight up says he’s her true love before they meet)
A very plot-centered romance overall
Yes, the description made me think this book was all about true love, kissing, and romance.
But….
It most certainly is the opposite.
This book is in fact more about psychics, spirits, ley lines, magical trees, and the search for an ancient Welsh king who waits to be woken. Now doesn’t all of that sound so much more appealing than the kissing? I know I found it to be, I couldn’t resist turning pages to find out what would happen with all of these things next! Maggie Stiefvater intricately weaves the paranormal with the fantastical, sure there are supernatural things happening but yet you still get the very distinct impression of magic. How could you not love a blending of the paranormal and the magical?
The atmosphere that was created, it was eerie and also suspenseful, I loved everything from Blue’s family demonstrating their psychic abilities to Gansey and boy’s quest for Glendower (you know…that ancient Welsh king I mentioned earlier). There are definitely a lot of things happening within the plot of this book, lots of different plot lines to be followed. It may come off confusing right away to some people but the mystery and anticipation is half the fun, trust me! There is also a bit of POV jumping, which I know can confuse some readers or at least annoy, so you’ve been warned about that now.
As far as all of the romance goes though there still is some but it really does take a backseat in the story which I appreciated very much. However, I don’t think any of you romance fans will be too disappointed with it. It’s a very slow-burn romance and it doesn’t completely take over the plot and the romance isn’t exactly between the characters you would expect…..
The pacing did get a little slow at times and it would really go up and down a lot, however, I didn’t mind since my thirst for answers concerning our many plot lines far out-weighed any slow pacing.
Overall I think my favorite part about this story and its plot is how original it feels, which is something I wasn’t expecting at all. I was actually expecting a book full of the same old tropes but I have definitely never read or heard of anything like this before.
Honestly I think the characters are the best part of this whole book, the story is kind of character driven overall. There wasn’t a single character I disliked which is quite the feat on its own. Everyone is complex, developed, and interesting. Emphasis on the interesting. They’re also all very likable in general but most of all they’re realistic.
Blue Sargent is one of our MCs don’t let the description fool you into thinking this is a 1st Person POV told only by Blue because it isn’t. Blue and The Raven Boys themselves are on equal footing as far as the POVs go. I digress, I actually really liked Blue’s character she’s sensible (as she so often calls herself) and quirky and she doesn’t really take shit from anybody. Qualities I love in a heroine. She’s also a kind of the opposite of a special snowflake seeing as how she’s the only member of her family that doesn’t have psychic abilities which I like because it makes her just a bit more relatable as a character. However, Blue does make things “louder” for other psychics but I still don’t view this as special snowflake status.
Then we have our Raven Boys and they really are the stars of the show in my opinion and Blue pales in comparison,  I could sit and sing their praises all damn day. Gansey, Adam, Ronan, and Noah are just complete and utter perfection as far as characters go; they’re flawed, complex, and actually quite….swoon-worthy. I also really love how strong their friendship is and how realistically it’s portrayed. It’s also a nice change of pace to have interesting male main characters in a YA book.
Gansey is very determined in his quest for Glendower and he’s clever and a loyal friend. He’s also not my favorite character I just found something a little lacking with him, don’t get me wrong he’s still a great character and I like him but he just isn’t my favorite. Something just didn’t quite spark my interest enough with Gansey’s character.
Adam makes me heart bleed, I came close to tears every time we switched to his POV. He’s got the whole “rags to riches” thing going on but it doesn’t come without its costs and he’s had to work very hard to get where he’s at. Honestly I just wanted to give him a hug the whole time and he deserves one!
Ronan is by far my favorite character he’s the “bad boy” and I feel cliched for having him be my favorite but he’s so awesome I don’t even care. There’s actually a lot going on with Ronan and he has his fair share of secrets that keeps his character intriguing. Plus everyone loves a sarcastic little shit, right?
Noah is probably one of the single most adorable characters I’ve ever come across in a book, he puts fluffy kittens to shame. He’s quiet and very much in the background but that doesn’t make him any less important. I think the most significant thing I can even say about Noah is that he’s adorable, seriously that’s probably all you need to know.
There are also many secondary characters that are equally complex and play equally important parts in the plot. Mostly Blue’s family. They’re just as quirky and eccentric as Blue and they’re just overall a fun set of characters. Blue’s mom is definitely one of my favorite literary mothers of all time now.
The Raven Boys is a great, original tale that blends the paranormal with the mystical and has amazing characters that are easy to connect with.
I’m giving this a rating of 4.5 because I don’t quite feel it’s a full 5 star book but I’m also giving it that extra 0.5 star just because I can’t stop thinking about this book!
Overall I can say that the hype was worth it and I’m so glad to have finally read it.

The Raven Cycle Review
Tumblr media
Seelie’s Review
I don’t know how to accurately describe how wonderful this series is. I’m not going to review just the book, but make a quick review on the series as a whole, since I devoured them all in a matter of days.
The first time I read The Raven Boys was in 2013. I had expectations, they were not met. I was disappointed. Let me be clear that it wasn’t the book that was disappointing, but the fact that it didn’t fulfill the expectations I had for it. I get in these moods where I want to read a specific genre and I sometimes want it to follow the standard formula that goes with that genre. You expect that to be pretty standard. You read the synopsis on Goodreads:
“Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them–until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her.
His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.”
and you think this story is going to be a love story. A YA about a girl and a boy meeting and their ill-fated love.
That’s not what this is. It’s not a love story at all. I mean, there’s love in it. Obviously she will kiss Gansey at some point, doi, but this is more of an adventure story to appeal to your inner Goonie! We know love is a part of the deal, but it’s a minor character in what is an amazingly well-fleshed out and original story. At its core, It’s about four kids discovering themselves, not just the supernatural sides of themselves (this is a book about dreams, magical woods, ley lines, fortune tellers and magicians), but also who they are as people. Gansey is so rich, his friends can’t see who he is past his affluent, affected persona to the boy who is scared he is going to die and frightened he won’t solve his mystery before he does. Ronan hides a strange magic inside himself, both frightening and awesome, the same magic his father had before he was murdered for misusing it. Adam, who lives in a trailer park with his abusive family, is so self-conscious that he is the only poor one of the group that he doesn’t love himself enough to except love from others. And Noah, well, I can’t say much about him because I don’t want to reveal too much, but he’s just as multi=dimensional as the rest.
And Blue. Blue is trapped in their world by a prophecy that she desperately hopes to stop. Never expecting to find love and family in a group of boys she thought she’d never relate to on any level.
This character development is woven into a tale about their search for a dead Welsh king in a magical wood in the mountains and the story starts off a little strange, but is so beautifully written and so lyrical that you can picture it perfectly. It comes around full circle at the end. You can tell, unlike so many interesting stories that end poorly because the author really didn’t know where they were going or what they were saying, that Steifvater knew exactly what she wanted to say, beginning, middle and end, and it’s clear how seamless her story is.
I listened to it on audio tape at work. I do a lot of data entry and it fills the empty space while I type. I found myself laughing out loud, smiling and even crying. Each character felt like they were my friends. Like I was part of Richard Gansey III’s court and these Raven boys were just as important to me as they were to Blue. It’s an awesome series!
