I really love it when characters tell me stuff late at night
I’ve been attempting to work out who and with all possibility, what Rhaegar is and in doing so, I kind of inadvertently worked out how Chaos created the world and what happened when Gaia took over and made her own. (Rhaegar told this to me as a story)
Long ago, before the concept of time and the creation of man, celestial beings strode through the stars. They were Titan creatures, able to create and destroy on a whim and they did so for countless generations. Chaos, chief among them, contained in him the ability to create life, and also - should it anger him or displease him, he could wipe it from existence. Boredom did come to the titan and through it, he breathed life into Yggdrasil, a great world tree possessing seeds which could become worlds of their own. From these seeds came Asgard, the world of golden gods and unimaginable power. The main God, Odin reached out to his master and desired adventure beyond Asgard and so Chaos gave him 3 new worlds with new creatures and exploration to be had.
Among these worlds were the Gods of Olympus who viewed Chaos as their great father and swore to him that any world he created would be protected by them. Not wanting to be overshadowed by the newer creations, Odin and his fellows did the same. The other worlds did not and preferred to stay on their own, becoming world powers of their own and scattering themselves among the stars of their individual times.
These lands amused the titans for a time before boredom again set in and Chaos grew tired of what he had created. Rather than destroy the Great Tree, however, he plucked from it a seed and took a burning ember from the nether and breathed life into them. They became Gaia, with the gift of creation and preservation of life, and Erebus (he would come to be known as Lucifer) with the curse to destroy.
Each were given access to the tree but because Erebus could only destroy, or lead to the creation of creatures that would do the same, Chaos created a world for him to inhabit with the demons and monsters he created. Erebus reviled his “sister” for her abilities and vowed that whenever she created beauty, he would find a way to corrupt it.
Gaia first began with a world of magic, elves, dwarves and dragons where each could live among the other. Of course strife would appear but through their own machinations their problems could be solved. Erebus took interest in this world and created upon it a Great Door of Night, which at some predetermined time would open and the world of magic would be destroyed and everything with it would be swallowed. Irritated by her brother but unable to wipe the Door from her creation, Gaia instead shaped the first of the race of Men, declaring that one day they would put an end to the Door themselves.
While her first creation flourished and even seemed to be leading to men and other creatures interacting with one another, Gaia turned her attention to a new world. She plucked a seed from Yggdrasil as she was allowed and created an entire planet for her race of Men. However, rather than just creating the naked beast she touched the small world and watched it. As a test to what her power could truly do. And thus the Earth was created. This world was named Midengard by Odin and his children and also became an interest to Zeus and his pantheon and both deemed it a worthy interest. These helped where they could but did little to interact with the creatures which seemingly created themselves.
Jealous of the attention Gaia’s little world was getting, Erebus lashed out and gave birth to monsters. He labeled them The Four and gave them names: Samael (the corruptor), Morpheus (the nightmare lord), Aramyis (the manipulator) and Radyr (the destructor). Each of them were given Dark gifts which they used to manipulate the creatures of the Earth though each time they did so, they were overpowered. Furious, Erebus gave rise to the 7 Sins, but still they were defeated. For every illness there was a cure, every fire, a rebirth. Erebus finally sought out help from the lesser of Odin and Zeus’ pantheons, the tricksters Loki and the God of War, Ares. With them on his side, there was hell to pay.
They were countered but the battles over the human world and the Underworld were great and many times it looked bleak. Finally Erebus and Gaia met in direct combat with one another on a plane of some half-created world and clashed. In doing so, they drew one another’s blood and something else was created. Chaos appeared to them then and, angry that two of his creations had brutalized one another he sentenced them to watch as the fruit of their anger multiplied and became something terrible. Gaia, saddened and hurt, but not willing to so easily give up on her created worlds, designated a small area on her planet where the rift caused by her and Erebus’ battle leaked onto Earth, and sealed it behind a great metal gate. Following its creation, she created the first of the Prophets. Humans who would know of the struggle to come and who would be tasked with the resealing of the gate whenever the evil behind it would begin to seep into the world.
Erebus, angered but ashamed of his attack on his sister, placed sentries near the gate who would serve as guard to keep any who ventured there away through fear or worse if the need so arose. (This place would come to be known as Serenity, and the darkness within it is waking up. The demons and later dark magicians who served as a guard over it soon forgot their mission and instead became victims of the seeping evil. The chiefest of calamities, a nightmare demon known as Appolyn [we call him Management now] rules over the dark places within and seeks to wither the gate keeping him. He nearly escaped in the mid-1800s when one of the Prophets discovered a sword, lost by Chaos himself, and attempted to wield the weapon to destroy Serenity’s evil. He failed, his soul taken and reborn as the angel Castiel. He now guards the newest prophet)
Chaos soon grew bored and tasked a few other Titans to watch over his children, one going so far as to take up residence within Gaia’s bright world of Ethereal. There, her god-like children each possessed their own abilities, fractions of hers and they were given the ability to choose how they would use it. Ahmer felt love for Gaia and decided to stay by her side. Another, taking the form of a great wizard, chose to watch the Middle Earth of dragons and magic. Most places grew and flourished, though as it goes, not all things were well.
Ares and Loki, bitter and angry in their abandonment by Chaos, began lashing out. Little things at first, bringing War and Malice to Midengard was the most amusing but always they were countered, one way or another and over time even their plans seemed to fall. They managed, later in the world, to corrupt a guardian of Ethereal, and through this they deposed Gaia and shattered the calm of the worlds she created. This fissure led to the first part of the Door of Night beginning to open on Middle Earth allowing for the entry of demonic creatures waiting within the Nether. It also sent a shiver through Serenity as the walls weakened and the Hollow beside it became corrupted. Gaia was missing for generations, her sons Anton and Aron were cursed and the good magics of the world were forever damaged. The first of many monsters escaped into the world as well, Erebus’ demonic Four gave rise to vampires and the land of massive beasts took root as well. Earth was being bled into by other worlds and because of this, Chaos was awakened from his sleep.
He threatened destruction but it fell on deaf ears and even his own creations clashed against their lord. Chaos was injured, his heart struck by his own creations’ deceit. Blood from his wound crystallized into small crystals and each of them scattered across all worlds. A tear fell from Chaos’ eye as well, falling to the realm of Earth and broke into countless pieces. While some imbedded into the hearts of the race of Men, some turned into jewels of power. (The Chaos stones) These crystals were individual drops of power, each of them capable of both great and unimaginable things. Chaos retreated, vowing that if he were ever called back into the world, he would destroy all of it, these things he created did little to deserve his love and therefore, they had lost it. Gaia sought out her father and begged for salvation, and in his sadness, Chaos granted it. He gifted her world with a being of his own fruition. It would have the power to move between all worlds and if it’s heart remained pure, it could save all worlds from destruction. If it could gather the pieces of Chaos’ broken heart and return them to him.
Loki & Ares, still bitter over the loss of their father to Gaia, decided then to seek out the pieces for themselves and hide them away. They also found the being Chaos created on Gaia’s Earth and manipulated its life, attempting to keep it from completing the task. To counter them, Zeus and even the gods of Ethereal have stepped in where they can, providing her with assistance and even bending the rules of the planet to ensure that she does not give up. If she does, all worlds are doomed.
