as a lesbian talking abt it always feels like ur opening urself up to that judgement so i always immediately want to be like 'but i am personally really disgusted by men and the idea of having anything romantically or sexually to do with one is hideous to me!!!' but i always stop myself bc its like well... it wouldnt actually matter how i feel towards men though, because my autonomy is absolute on its own and if i know that i WANT to be involved with women and not with men then like.. the conversation can end there! in the mainstream imagination i feel like so many gay men's stories start w the realisation of their attraction to men, but lesbians' with the realisation of their non-attraction to men. my moment of absolute clarity was the first time a girl asked me out & i had the rapid realisation that like, oh i would ENJOY that, i WANT that, when i had been saying yes to guys who asked before just bc i was like idk...ig i dont have a reason to not. it sounds funny but like until that point i had literally never thought about what i might want, only like.. if id be able to stomach a serious relationship with a guy. so even though i kind of felt by then that the answer might be no, it hadnt really brought me any answers & it wouldnt have mattered if i had decided i could, because it was immediately obvious at that point that a heterosexual relationship with a man wasnt something i wanted for me in my life when i could have a gay relationship w a woman. i felt sooo free in that moment, not bc my feelings abt men had been conclusively revealed to me but actually bc i realised i didnt even gaf.

its kind of a double bind for us between the fact that heterosexual people need to be reassured that gay people are ontologically so in order to respect us (and not feel threatened by us😳), and the various layers of misogyny incl the expectation that we are passive participants in the equation of desire, which alienates us frm our desires & the very experience of desire itself, and also fosters the assumption that any ability to experience male desire will supersede anything else if at all possible so therefore it has to be completely ruled out to be allowed to ignore it. we need to prove that we are not CAPABLE of having a relationship with a man in order not to want one, whether right now or ever. so the fact i personally do feel genuinely unable to experience that without like genuinely wanting to kill myself feels like its basically irrelevant to anyone but me, and only self-determination matters to anyone else. i feel like im more interested in defending the right of other women to want&seek&enjoy sexual&romantic relationships with other women, regardless of why, rather than proving that i personally have done all my homework and can prove that i wouldnt be happy with a man. like wtf, women are hot and dating a woman is the most beautiful experience of my life, who wouldnt want to seek that out !! its irrelevant what the alternatives are bc none of them are preferable. the continued survival of this rhetoric in lgbt spaces only really reinforces that being gay is a bad thing to be and gay relationships are worse than heterosexual ones and no one would ever want that unless they had no other choice and i just soo strongly do not feel that!!

This got SO LONG, so I hope you meant it when you said you wanted in depth! Holy shit I sorta lost my mind on this.

In my early days as a bear-poker in this fandom, I described fanon!Klaus as that person who gets resurrected in a horror movie and comes back different. As an audience member, I can tell he's wrong, but nobody interacting with him directly seems to know this. I've also talked a little bit about Klaus and intelligence before, which plays into any discussion about fanon!Klaus, but I'll be more specific here. Before I get started, I wanna say that fandom is a fun space and I don't think anyone is *bad* for creating/enjoying fanon!Klaus, especially not for the third reason I lay out. I just think he's awful, and has some harmful roots that I doubt the people writing him even know about on a conscious level.

Okay, let's get into this. Because I'm me and Wittgenstein's early work that he later disagreed with has changed my entire way of interacting with the world, I'm gonna define my terms. Let's talk about what fanon!Klaus is LIKE before we talk about why I REALLY DON'T LIKE HIM. Fanon!Klaus is a happy, stupid, sweet, childish, bubbly, luminous free spirit. He wears bubblegum pink skirts and he cries when Diego eats his cookies. He doesn't know what numbers are, he can't count, he can't walk and chew gum, he thinks that Africa is a country, he forgets that homophobia exists, he doesn't know that drugs are bad for him, the list goes on (These are all real examples. Can you tell what part of fanon annoys me the most?). He cries at the drop of a hat, and doesn't understand his place in the family. He'd move heaven and earth to help the people around him, and he'd never be mean to anyone but Luther (and even then just barely) He constantly needs attention, supervision, etc. He makes jokes about modern memes and listens exclusively to pop music. He's really damaged but it's only because nobody Took Care Of Him and he needs someone to Rescue Him.

Canon Klaus is mean, and quick, and sharp, and miserable, and hiding, and funny because you're laughing WITH him, and an old soul, and a goth, and chronically apathetic, and selfish, and so fucking smart, and acutely aware of just how much he matters to other people. He makes rape jokes, he figures out how to get info on the eye while high out of his mind, he speaks like 10 languages, he listens to Nina Simone, he uses people's inherent fear of the dead to buy himself time, he finds the perfect story within the dead to cause a rift, he tells Luther TO HIS FACE that he doesn't care if the world ends. Klaus is a fascinating study in queer trauma, and robbing him of these traits is a complete disservice to yourself AND the character.

I say this often about fanon!Klaus, but WHO IS THIS??? Like…. Okay, if I gave you this list and you didn't know it was about Klaus, would you think it was? I think he's literally unrecognizable. He's not any of the things I know or love about Klaus. He's nobody to me, except a nuisance wearing the same skin suit and clogging the tags. He is also, weirdly, the most popular character in the entire fandom. I wanna think about why, and I have 3 theories that I think can all be true separately or simultaneously instance to instance.

First, fanon!Klaus exists because of internalized homophobia, classism, and anti-addict rhetoric. I think that on some level people don't believe addicts, feminine queer men, or homeless people are capable of intelligence. I think people see Klaus's canonical positive traits and they sort of throw them out the window because they don't make sense with their world view. A queer addict is a helpless tragedy, and he's someone that needs rescuing by Kind Strong Dave. A queer addict can't be smart, because then he wouldn't be an addict. A queer addict can't be wily, or interesting, because then he wouldn't be an addict. Fandom sees a feminine queer mlm and knows he should be in a sparkly bubblegum pink skirt, and saying "dahling" or "wig" or whatever else all the time. They know he should be bashful and submissive and always falling into the arms of Kind Strong Dave who protects him from Evil. They also know he should really, really like Britney Spears, and not give a shit about Nina Simone.

Second, fanon!Klaus exists because people want to excuse negative behavior in their favorite characters. Klaus is selfish and mean and apathetic. He just is. These are flaws that haunt him, and define a lot of his interactions. These are, also, pretty tough flaws to excuse (which… Hey…. I have a solution for that). I think that fanon Klaus, who just doesn't GET that he's being mean, and is too stupid not to become an addict (I don't think addiction is a flaw, but I do think that addiction plays into this), and is too out of touch and childish to understand that he shouldn't just fucking leave, comes from a place of wanting Klaus to be a good person who does good things. I'm sorry, but he isn't. Not always. I think the impulse to make him constantly sweet and constantly stupid comes from wanting Klaus's actions to be fundamentally excusable. He can't help it! He's just too much of a useless twink to know that it's bad to lie! (also, side note, fanon!Ben comes from this side of fanon!Klaus. In canon, Klaus is self destructing on purpose and Ben's presence helps…. Maybe, possibly, twice. In fanon, Klaus is just stupid and he needs a babysitter and that is Ben, the motiveless, endlessly loving but Exhausted braincell holder. This is fucked up on many levels. Ben is an asshole, and we all need to get used to that idea quick).

The third and final reason is that fanon!Klaus is… More fun, in the traditional sense of the word. Fanon!Klaus seems like he comes from a very emotional romcom or sitcom or something. He's like a barbie. He's fun to play dress-up with. He's fun to make incorrect quotes about. He's fun to write about, especially when it's about his siblings herding him or coddling him. Good ol' useless, loveable Klaus. I think this is partially because Klaus is a pretty fucking heavy character. He's a traumatized homeless queer drug addict, and that's sort of hard to make jokey fandom content about. Not impossible, I don't think, but not easy. This isn't to say that angsty fandom content isn't guilty of fanon!Klaus, though. It absolutely is. Often when Klaus willingly shares his feelings, or cries in front of someone, or asks for help for something more intense than tying him to a chair, it's fanon!Klaus. Hell, any time he GETS rescued it's teetering into that territory. He's still completely devoid of all of the grit and intrigue of canon, but he's fun to write about, and fun to project onto, and fun to rescue. He's also EASIER to write. People know that Klaus is a funny character, they know they laugh when he's on screen, but it is WAY harder to write a character you're laughing with than it is to write a character you're laughing at. It's WAY easier to write a character who moves your angst plot on by asking for help, or necessitating rescuing, than it is to work out how these things would happen without initiation. I get it, and in spite of the length of this, I don't think it's the end of the world.

I guess as I close this out, I would remind everyone that Klaus is smart, and mean, and over 30 years old. He's not a babe in the woods, or a damsel in distress, or a useless silly junkie twink. I promise that the real Klaus is worth the time and effort it takes to engage with him.

first of all on this valid bitch of an i hate jk rowling post, the ilvermorny houses. it’s like…. Big cultural appropriation of native american ideas and stories, twisting them to fit her narrative for harry potter and completely disrespecting their history and origins. the history she creates for north american wizards is shit too, saying that native americans would “primitively” practice magic until europeans civilized them with wands (even tho…. it’s like really impressive to do magic without wands in her universe??? like sounds like the native americans were way ahead of europeans, but ofc she twists her own narrative to make the natives primitive). her whole history or north american wizardry also apparently just follows white wizards immigrating to north america and shit……

jk rowling is also really good at speaking out about racism when she wants to on twitter and yet all of her canonical poc characters in the books are background characters. i know hermione is black in the cursed child play, but that feels a bit like the dumbledore thing to me, like they never actually talk abotu it in the books? and if she wanted hermione to be black why didn’t she have any protests about emma watson being cast? if she wanted harry to be brown why didn’t she have any protests about daniel radcliffe being cast? i don’t know if she had any say in that, but i guess she had a say in insisting that the actors had to be british, so if she cared about making a main character poc, why did she not have any qualms about the cast, even in retrospect, even respectful ones like “i love daniel and emma to death but in retrospect i wrote them as characters of color”?

like she didn’t have to push dean and cho and the very small characters of color to the side but she did. she didn’t have to stereotype cho but she did. there are no poc in fbawtft, or there aren’t in the movie at least – and if she’s so happy about johnny depp and can speak out about that relentlessly, but she wanted there to be characters of color in fantastic beasts, why can’t she speak out about that? 

like the cultural appropriation is enough to see that she’s clearly a racist asshole who doesn’t care about the cultures of people who aren’t white, but it’s also clear to see in the background of her writing that she doesn’t care about research for shit if it’ll help to respect people of color in her stories, and she certainly doesn’t care to ensure that there are important characters of color for people to look up to when they read her books or watch the movies about them

also, remus was supposed to be gay apparently, but he “changed and fell in love with tonks” like ok first of all bi people exist, second of all why would you write a straight person who’s supposed to basically have AIDS when that sounds a hell of a lot like “predatory gay man infects poor straight kid” like there’s SO MUCH wrong with that, and yeah you kind of have to dig into it a little bit to get there, but when you’re writing about risky topics and you literally admit to it, you need to be WELL-VERSED on what you’re writing about!! and to say you’re writing about AIDS is deeply mixed with gay history! and to say that the main character who is a werewolf was SUPPOSED to be gay and then pretend you’re NOT associating it with gay people is just… such cognitive dissonance, or maybe really ridiculous ignorance

i don’t actually know her role in those films, but she has said she loves depp, what he’s done with the character, and where the darkness of grindelwald is going in the first movie and its sequels, so even if her role is very little, she supports what is being done.

i don’t know where to put this bc this could be any number of things but i just thought about this so i’ll put it here: the thing that’s created in fantastic beasts, where it’s like basically a personification of anguish from suppressing magic – that’s quite blatantly a reference to any number of minorities, like gay people suppressing their sexuality, trans people suppressing their gender, the mentally ill and disabled pushing themselves too hard or trying to ignore/hide it… and credence was vilified and killed and the protags weren’t even… really sad about it?? and the ministry of magic never really THOUGHT About that they just killed him….. and that’s okay…. that’s fine… they’re just going around killing a bunch of KIDS who are inconvenient to them and who basically symbolize a whole number of oppressed groups. cool, it’s fine

most fat characters in harry potter are shitty people. the dursleys, pettigrew, and umbridge – all characters we’re supposed to find deeply wrong, the ones we’re supposed to hate the most other than, like, voldemort. like…..? a lot of the other fat characters are all “matronly” like molly weasley or stubborn and “lazy” like cornelius fudge who allowed voldemort to rise to power. like what’s that supposed to say about what she thinks the extent of fat people is? stubborn, evil, or motherly? 

she actually has a character grow fatter and fatter based on how shitty she acts towards harry because of a magic mishap. she also usually describes the nice fat people as “plump” and “pleasant,” while she describes dudley as “so much like a pig” that he couldn’t even be turned furhter into a pig when it was attempted, or as a “killer whale,” or vernon dursley as “having no neck”

her fascination with abusers

My friend I am sorry to hjack your post but I have several things to say. I couldn’t help myself

Before I go off waxing poetic about this, let me say i like harringrove, like really i think it’s got an interesting dynamic but i am also very much aware of the dysfunctional relationship it can become. And also this is absolutely not a way for me to start a fight!!! I’m discussing the song lyrics choices a little. I’m very sorry because it turned into a discussion on what I wish harringrove was rather than what it is. This is long as fuck, filled with annoying literary rhetoric but i’m a literature hoe. I’m sorry. 

So let’s talk about the post. At first I was just concerned about one thing : I was commenting under your edit like “that upper right pic of the guy with a bruise all over his neck, i don't like at all... like, are those hickeys? I hope it's hickeys and at the same time i hope it's not, bc bruises that size fucking hurt like hell. honestly why would you want so many hickeys?”

But then it got me thinking (and that’s why i’m writing this much i’m so sorry), and so anyway the edit is aesthetically really cool, I’m in love with the color choices and pics but I realize I see several problems in the way harringrove is portrayed...'specially the use of the Lana song (which I actually really like), since she talks about delusional love that gives nothing but pain (”loving you was really hard”, “he hurt but it felt like true love”, etc), she takes the point of view of someone who’s blinded by love so much they don’t understand that the pain they get is not love. She literally says “And you're my cult leader” about her lover, like if that’s not enough evidence. Quick analysis : the link with religion is interesting because religion comes with worship. In theory God’s love is absolute and you should love him and love others like he loves you, right? Healthy, mutual love that doesn’t expect anything in return but love. On the other hand basically a cult leader manipulates people’s faith and feelings and uses people’s blind love to his advantage. So in that aspect, cult leader are abusive and his followers are his victims, right? So by implying that her lover is like a cult leader, she immediately shows what kind of love the character in this song is experiencing : it’s not real love (mutual love) but false love that she thinks is real love (abusive love, a love that you’re a victim of). Back to a more personal take on that stuff : the problem I have is that I’d hate Steve to fall into that kind of infatuation, and I hear you, “love happens you don’t choose to fall in love with someone” but I don’t like it because it’s not healthy, obviously. But fact is, if we were to build on what canon material we have, sadly, we’re not far from the truth. What I’m basically saying is that technically your choice of lyrics is, sadly, correct considering our material :  it technically places Billy as a potentially abusive lover   to Steve and I wish things were different, but as for now Billy is violent, abusive, and has some serious control issues, and I mean we got what we got. I’m gonna state the obvious here : that kind of love ain’t good. So I don’t like the song choice for that reason, I really dont want Steve in an abusive relationship because he deserves all the love and I also I don’t think he would fall victim to that kind of false love... Because even though he’s a hopeless romantic, when bad stuff happens in the relationship he doesn’t just accept it. When he thought Nancy was cheating he was all anger and disappointment, he wasn’t accepting it. When she said their love was bullshit, he wasn’t clingy, he tried to make things right until he understood he had to let go of her. 

tl,dr I don’t like that song choice because i think it doesn’t suit Steve but it sadly does suit the material we got from s2   

BUT I have positive stuff to say, too! As for the die antwoord song, the song is cool but there are definitely better parts of the song to apply to Billy I think, which is too bad you chose the worship part... No healthy relationship starts or ends with worship, as we saw with the “cult leader” thingie. Anyway the pov in this song is that of a crazy dog who’s lunatic as fuck because it’s a cliché version of a pitbull terrier (not the sweet, cute and clever kind of pitbull we all know) and it goes : B-b-baby, here, boy Are you crazy? Down boy Look at your crass face Why you so serious?? You’re so intense Maybe why I’m so curious I’m a lost soul, save me Emotional, sway me Touch me, shake me I’m game, play me Love me, hate me Kiss me, date me Break me, make me Yours

That part is really totally Billy Hargrove for sure, don’t you think? The way i understand the song it’s all about showing that even people who learned nothing but violence all their lives seek and crave love. Pitbull terrier are really sweet, clever dogs, but they’re also notoriously used in dog fights and trained for generations to be the most violent and genetically unstable possible. But if, as an owner, you give them love and attention, they’re the sweetest dogs ever, clever, soft with kids and cuddlers (does it show that i love dogs?). Even pitbull terriers who have been trained to fight (though it takes a lot of work to build trust)!  And what do we know about Billy Hargrove? That he’s been subject to abuse and violence from his dad, his own parent, an authority figure, someone who should love him but instead tries to control him with violence. Just like a bad dog owner would do : dominating him with fear and pain and teaching him nothing but violence. So for that particular instance I think the song is a pretty good choice, because what I think Billy needs is someone to take him as he is but also not let him do the shit he’s learned, but not in a violent way : he needs a kind owner to love this crazy dog. And we know some kind kid who probably loves dog.

Now, what I don’t like with the part you chose is that it’s once again unhealthy love : the “I worship you” part is fucked up. I’m all about “worshipping” like in the Addams family, Gomez worships Morticia but he lifts her up, he considers her sublime (and there a really good post about that), but we’re talking about the Addams family : in some ways, they are otherworldy in the kind of love they have for each other. It’s an ideal, mutual love but it’s on a scale that’s probably impossible to achieve in a real relationship. However it’s something to aim for, definitely. But, the worship part of the Die Antwoord song is different, keeping the pov of the dog it’s more about fear than admiration in a very self-destructive manner : he’s loving violence as much as the person he’s fighting for. Which, ok, I guess Billy would love that way, desperately, but on the other hand of the relationship is Steve, someone who wouldn’t take advantage of that violence. He’s not the owner that makes his dog fight for personal gain, he’s the owner that cuddles his dog and calls him good. At least I’m pretty sure about that. If you don’t train a dog to fight, he probably won’t. The part about love being something that saves you and changes you is totally paradoxical considering the Lana song choice, in which she even says “loving you was never enough”.

tl;dr : the Die Antwoord song is a pretty good choice but only because another part of the song suits Billy really well in my opinion. Otherwise it’s kind of a contradiction considering the Lana song choice for Steve

In the end, I’m wondering about the future of this ship. I think there’s a good source material to work with, the possibilities are great and I’ve read some pretty good stuff that shows you can build around Billy’s character and stay true to him but also make him change for the better version of himself but I’ve seen people fantasize about the abuse that pertains to Billy’s character. Don’t get me wrong, I think that part of him is what makes him a very interesting and complex character and I’m all about dramatic storyline, violence and desperation and whatnot but not when it comes to love. And I know real life love is not perfect and it’s kind of annoying when things go perfectly well in stories, but I’m a hopeless kid : I love Steve’s character, I really like Billy’s, and I want them to grow in a way that’s for the better, positive, and not the usual, cliché route that is filled with pain and hate and violence. And honestly, that’s bothering me, because we already have a gazillion stories that romanticize abuse and we’ve pointed out the flaws and how unhealthy it is for decades.  So what I’m really asking is, do we want Billy to stop being violent or not? Do we want the better part of him or the worse? Do we, as shippers, condone the abuse or not? The answer is not. That’s what I mean.  Ithink we can do better than that, my dudes. that’s a pretty cool edit tho honestly !!! and again im so fucking sorry to hijack your post but it made me think of how complex and paradoxical harringrove can be, which is very very interesting to an overanalyzing hoe like me. also why can’t i put a read more on someone else’s post? is it possible and im actually just dumb??
