18 and 25 for the ask thingy! :)
Thank you for the ask :D
18. A memorable meal this year?
I made borsch this year for the first time since moving out of my parents' house (and I moved out... a while ago). I was always scared of making it for some reason! And it didn't turn out perfect, I need to make some improvements to the recipe next time. But it did turn out, and I did tear up a little bit when I first tried it because it tasted so much like home.
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one
Hissera time! Hissera (they/he) is my Rook - Qunari, Grey Warden, Death Caller mage.
They grew up in Seheron, and were assigned the role of karashok when they came of age. They had a good life and were content, but then their death magic manifested. This happened to them much later than most mages, at age 21.
For two years they managed to hide it, but as it grew more powerful, they knew it was a matter of time until they were discovered. They were terrified of becoming a Saarebas - but also, since they had never seen death magic like theirs, they feared the Arvaarad would just kill them.
So they ran.
In running away, they gave up everything - their name, their role, and any semblance of order in their life. They ended up in Minrathous, taking mercenary jobs and always looking over their shoulder. One day they overheard someone talking about how the Grey Wardens protect the world from the Blight, and how they accept anyone to their ranks. They set out for Weisshaupt the following week.
Even in Weisshaupt their magic wasn't well-regarded, and they didn't truly feel like they fit in. After an incident where they accidentally brushed by a rose bush and a stray magic flare made all the leaves and flowers wither and die, the other Wardens started calling them Thorn. The nickname stuck, and its spelling changed over time to become the semblance of a last name.
They went by many names in that time. Having lost the name "Karashok", they didn't feel right with anything anyone called them. Varric called them "Rook", and it stuck...
...until the eve of the final battle. Because at that point they had found friends who looked up to them; they had found a mentor for their death magic in Emmrich, and a sibling in Taash, and a lover in Davrin; and they realized that their job in this world, their new role, was to bring hope to hopeless places.
So they took the name Hissera ("hope" in Qunlat), and went to fight.
