I know I REALLY need to stop beating up a dead horse but words cannot express how that first conversation between Garak and Julian annoys me at times because on one hand it makes sense that Julian as someone centered in the anglo-imperialist USAian perspective of the Federation who doesn't have a particular interest in literature before meeting Garak is there going wow, a family saga used to make a political/social/cultural point, groundbreaking. propaganda? in my fiction? it's more likely than you think.
but like if they wanted to make a thing about it they could have made a thing about it and just have Julian being like so I have been on Space Wikipedia, I think we should try out One Hundred Years of Solitude (or Radetzky's March) and this thing called socialist realism, or like maybe some Brecht?
but they never do, Julian instead throws at him some Shakespeare which tbf is a stroke of genius if it's intended as Julian going "Shakespeare is truly universal so he's gotta like something about it (which also conveniently suits my Federation sensibilities)" (whatever the fuck that means in this context) except he only throws Julius Cesar at him and like maybe I am supposed to see Julian's refusal to fling The Merchant of Venice or Othello or The Tempest at Garak as the fact that he is ultimately uncomfortable on some level with Garak's Cardassian pride which definitely has imperialistic and xenophobic connotations whether Garak personally believes in them or not
but like no one else does either and this is somehow the postcolonial show where Miles and Kira don't have ONE single conversation about how they both fought Cardassians and come from similiar colonial histories
Like girl, you want to be the postcolonial Star Trek show and then decide (correctly) that literature debates are a good way to make a point and then you can't make any points as all of human literature apparently ends in Shakespeare. "space, the final frontier" girl you don't even know where Europe is.
