Acies - Latin for Insight
a/n: Sorry for the wait and going so long without an update! Hopefully I can get through all the requests you guys sent in a while ago!
Laughing, your hair swaying in the wind as you repelled down the clock tower in London, Big Ben, you turned to look at the man clad in red next to you.
While you had a harness that secured your safety to solid ground, the Merc with a Mouth, Deadpool, had no such thing.
And after working with him for so many years, you had gotten over the initial fear and instinct to grab him and keep him safe, knowing that he would be fine after a few minutes of being a flat pancake on the ground.
His thoughts floated over to you, loud despite the rush of wind in your ears, ‘Do you think Vanessa would want to go to New York with us?’
The ground leapt up and met you, as you grunted and bent your knees to lessen the impact.
Grabbing the, now flat and broken, assassin, you ran, weaving into alleys to try and hide from the British police that were after you for stealing the gold that had been hidden in a vault inside Big Ben.
‘It’s not nice to ignore people [Y/n].’ Wade sassed in your head.
Sighing and shaking your head at him, you finally made it to the apartment you were currently renting in the city outskirts.
“I wasn’t ignoring you Wade. I was trying to run from the police while lugging a meat suit with me. Anyways, your not going to New York. It’s just me.”
Wade whined. His broken arms clicking back into place so he could remove his red hood.
His...unique...face was seen for a moment before he fell face down on the couch in your living room. His voice was muffled as he talked to you, “But [Y/n]! I wanna mess with the Sparky man!”
You snorted, flitting around the kitchen as you grabbed hand towels and ran them under hot water, “I’ll let Stark know to expect you soon then. But this mission is time sensitive. That’s why they went for the more stable of the two of us.”
Throwing the wet towel towards the whining man, you used one yourself to wipe off the dirt and broken metal from your face and arms.
Clad in a similar suit to Deadpool’s, only not red, instead [Y/f/c], you and Wade had become a team after you had discovered that he had survived and proceeded to kill Francis, the man who had also promised you a cure for your terminal brain tumor and had proceeded to torture you in another base he had. Just as Wade had awaken some sort of Mutant gene after the abuse, you had as well. Using your telepathic and seduction abilities to escape the compound and hide from Francis’s cronies until you had heard of the man named Deadpool.
While you weren’t as mentally unstable as him, you were still not all mentally there.
After saving Vanessa from a vengeful enemy of Deadpool, he had taken a liking to you and let you become his partner. Vanessa eventually become a friend to you as well, and you spent many nights in the two’s apartment drinking and getting into trouble.
Now years later, after being a bridesmaid for his and Vanessa’s wedding, dealing with the X-men and an assortment of Assassins, you and Deadpool were close friends.
So when a missive from Charles Xavier had reached you, asking for you to go to New York to help the Avengers with a mission, you and Wade had argued over who would go.
Now, standing in front of the Avenger tower with your duffel bag thrown over your shoulder, you kinda wished you had let Wade and Vanessa come with you.
Shaking away those thoughts, you steeled yourself. You were [Y/n], the one called Acies, by the media, and you were not scared of some so called superpowered beings.
Squaring your shoulders, you entered the tower and walked past the gaping receptionist into the open elevator as a man in a business suit walked out.
“Wait! You can’t just go-” The panicked receptionist’s voice abruptly shut off as the doors shut and the elevator took you up to the penthouse.
Smirking, you pulled down your mask, hiding your face completely. While you were expected, you wanted to have some fun before the serious mission talk began.
The upper floor of the tower was quiet. Staying close to the walls and shadows, you opened your mind to the thoughts around you.
‘Stacey sounded really scared.’
‘Wonder if it’s Acies.’
One thought in particular caught your attention and you zeroed in on it so that the person’s thoughts were crystal clear.
‘Why did Stark invite a crazy assassin? One associated to that lunatic. We don’t need another unstable person. Does Steve and Stark really think they can control The Winter Soldier and Acies if things go sideways on this mission?’
The Winter Soldier, also known as James Barnes, Previous War Commando under the leadership of Captain America, Turned Hydra assassin, turned Avenger.
His thoughts were a mix of self-deprecating and anger at the thought of an outsider on this mission.
Tracking the thoughts, you wound around a corner and found the man in question leaning casually against a counter, no outside indication to his inner thoughts.
“You know. Deadpool isn’t as crazy as some believe, and I can control myself thank you. But I could be persuaded to relinquish control to you given the right circumstances...like in a bedroom...” Your voice dropped into a purr as Bucky jumped and whirled around, his metal arm glinting under the lights as it was brought up in front of him.
“Acies?” Another voice cut through the tension.
Still in your casual stance, duffel bag dropping to the ground, you faced another tall man. Blonde.
Eh, you preferred brunettes. But this man was the definition of beefcake.
Steve Rogers, Captain America.
“Cap!” Straightening your posture, you saluted the man, inwardly laughing at his grimace and thoughts.
‘Why did I agree to this again?’
And then that damn velvety smooth voice once again filtered into your head, ‘Can’t see her face. Probably a good thing seeing as how ugly that Deadpool guy is from the same torture and stuff...but damn that body.’
Tilting your head, you grabbed the bottom of your mask and in one fluid motion ripped it off.
Both men stood gaping in front of you, but you kept your eyes on the Dark chocolate ones as his thoughts stuttered before resuming in a rush.
‘Oh...oh my god. This woman. I thought she would look like an expired Avocado but she is a literal goddess.’
You giggled, “Why thank you, you’re not so bad yourself Mister Prince looking Man.”
Bucky startled, as Steve laughed after a second.
“I forgot, your a Telepath!”
You grinned at Steve, “It’s literally in the name Acies. You know, when the government made everything bigger, they must of forgot the brain. But that’s okay,” Your eyes glinted as you looked down at Steve, ignoring his red face and Bucky’s look of jealousy, “There’s really only one thing that matters in size and I’m sure the men in government made sure it grew.”
Clapping hands and another body made its way into the room, “You’re just as vulgar as the media says. [Y/n].”
Flipping your hair over your shoulder, you shrugged, face going back into its stoic expression, “It’s a gift. So Sparky Man. What’s the mission that was so important that you had to call in the crazy friend of our resident merc with a mouth?”
Tony Stark was not fazed by the name calling, as he waved a hand and a hologram appeared before the four of you.
You leaned in closer and saw that it was a 3D landscape of a jungle.
“There is rumors of some members of the group that Francis, or otherwise known as Ajax, teaming up with Hydra and starting a base in this African Jungle. Several American citizens, high powered mutants, and people from Africa, have gone missing in the past months.
A Body was found by a village chief the other week, a village girl from all the way on the other side of the continent, and she had been obviously tortured and experimented on before she died.”
Fury grew, cold and raging, in your belly and mind as a picture of a young girl appeared next to a photo from a morgue, the part of the body that was visible bringing up memories you had fought hard to forget.
“[Y/n]?” The velvet voice, spoken and not heard in your head, shook you from your dark thoughts.
Turning, you saw Bucky looking at you. Your mind went immediately to Pity. That he was pitying you. But a closer second look had you understanding. He was sympathing.
Here was a man who understood. Here was a man who had gone through something very similar and shared the feelings that this mission invoked.
Taking a shaky breath, you smiled softly at the man, his eyes widening slightly before he smiled softly back at you.
You stifled the giggle his thoughts brought forth.
‘Her smile is gorgeous. Bright, like the sun.’
“Hey James.”
His name on your tongue felt right.
Ignoring the quizzical looks from Tony Stark and Steve Rogers, you turned your full attention to the Man whose thoughts were like a medical salve to your soul, “We can get through this, together. I may be a little unstable. And I understand that,” A dark laugh and your eyes went unfocused for a moment before returning to the present, “But we have a chance to save people from what we had to go through. And I for one, am not letting them get away. Are you with me?”
A dark smile. And his thoughts once again in your head, ‘I’ll always be with you. If you want me to.’
And your heart sang for the first time since you had escaped from that small lab in
France.
Maybe preventing Deadpool from coming to New York wasn’t as bad as you first thought.
After all. If he was here, he would probably make some-
“Hey everyone! Want some sriracha sauce for all that heat that Acies and Metal Boy over here are creating!? I also brought Chimichangas!”
God Dammit Wade.

Have you ever noticed that ( ERIK LEHNSHERR ) from the ( MARVEL UNIVERSE ) looks a lot like ( MICHAEL FASSBENDER )? But ( HE ) also go/goes by ( MAGNETO ). Having the ability of ( MAGNETISM MANIPULATION & UNWAVERING LOYALTY TO HIS CAUSE ) sure makes them a force to be reckoned with. Rumour has it they are ( 44 ) and is working as a ( LEADER OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF MUTANTS )
hey there, hi there, ho there !! i’m c, and i’m bringing my babies erik lehnsherr && grant ward to you about 400 years later. life snatched me but here i am finally. i’m terrible at remembering to respond to tumblr messages so if you’d like to plot, you can hit me up @ serial killer of kisses#0440
𝖜𝖍𝖊𝖗𝖊'𝖘 𝖍𝖊 𝖋𝖗𝖔𝖒?
timeline wise, erik is pulled somewhere post days of future past and early into apocalypse. given that the x-men were constantly fucking up their timelines and futures, he’s from an alternate timeline. which one? good question. we’ll pretend we know and just smile and nod. either way, this isn’t his timeline and it definitely isn’t the world / year he left behind so he’s going to be culture-shocked by 2020.
the last thing he really remembers is his daughter’s death and apocalypse strengthening his powers to become a horseman. so suffice to say, he’s simmering with rage and is very broken. he still hates humans, maybe more-so than ever before, and he thinks they’ll always be a plague — never see them as equals — and their extinction is the only way to ensure their kind survives. he’s an extremist and his methods are questionable as hell but he’s not entirely wrong.
this quote, in my opinion, sums up erik to a t:
“ that you're wrong. you think you're right. and that makes you dangerous."
𝖇𝖆𝖈𝖐𝖌𝖗𝖔𝖚𝖓𝖉
erik lehnsherr, also known as magneto, is a canon character from the x-men. my version of him follows the x-men first class timeline. you can read more about him here on the wiki but i’ll give you a brief overview.
he was born in dusseldorf, germany, into a middle-class jewish family. his father was a decorated WWI veteran but that wasn’t enough to save them from the struggles of discrimination when the nazi’s started rising to power. the family moved to poland shortly after he was born but were separated at the auschwitz concentration camps when he was fourteen. erik’s powers first manifested when he ran towards one of the gates — trying to get to it before they closed as he was forced to watch his parents get ripped away from him. the metal warped and twisted as the soldiers grabbed him, reports of which were made to dr. schmidt. instead of being sent out with the other children, erik was taken to the medical wing. his powers were exploited and often used against him, dr. schmidt focusing in on his anger and using it to control his powers. ( his mother died because he couldn’t move a simple coin with his abilities. in grief, fury washing over him, he destroyed everything in the room and murdered all of the guards. ) he was experimented on for years, schmidt weaponizing his anger, and when he was finally free he spent years trying to track down the man responsible for his pain and suffering.
by the time he finds shaw, his intentions are clear. he’ll kill him by any means necessary, even if it means his own death. it’s charles xavier that saves him from drowning in his efforts to sink shaw’s submarine, the professor dragging him up out of the water. though erik never really trusted the CIA, he agreed to help charles with some of the other mutants they’d found — to help them hone their abilities, and give them a place they belonged. he grew to care about charles and these other mutants, respected them even, but his ambitions always came first. he also feared that a mutant holocaust was an inevitability and his fear kept him from truly trusting others. finally, when he confronted shaw, who shared a vision of a world led by mutants, he found he agreed — but he couldn’t allow the man to live. he murdered him slowly, much to charles’ horror. with the soviet union and the united states teaming up against mutants, erik was prepared to kill them all. so much for preventing the cuban missile crisis. as charles and erik were fighting, rolling around on the ground as both tried to get the upper hand, a CIA agent shot at erik and he deflected one of the bullets. a stray bullet ricocheted and hit charles’ spine, paralyzing him. unable to comprehend the pain he’d caused someone he loved — and knowing their interests no longer aligned — erik and several of the other mutants left to start the first incarnation of the brotherhood of mutants. a family was divided like after a messy divorce.
from there, we don’t know a lot about what happened with erik until days of future past picks back up. we know he was arrested and detained in the pentagon by 1973. he allegedly curved a bullet that killed JFK. they break him out of prison to help try and save the world and inadvertently meet his timeline’s version of pietro ‘peter’ maximoff. he’s erik’s son, but he never discovers this information. to this day, he doesn’t know the truth. in truth, erik had been trying to save JFK — who was a mutant — but unfortunately he wasn’t able to. trask, who created the mutant detecting machines in the future, had been killing off mutants one by one. many of their former students, people they cared about, had died as a result of it. tortured, too. so suffice to say, both erik and charles thought the other had abandoned them / failed them and it was messy. he agrees to try and help them stop the future from happening, in the interest of saving more mutant lives, but does try to kill mystique when their plans start going awry. he fails and earns more distrust both from charles and the nation. yes, he went all evil villain and did a monologue on live tv. he’s that bitch. he fully intends on killing trask but mystique, who changes her mind thanks to charles’ influence, shoots him. it grazes his neck, just enough to garner his attention, but it’s enough to give her the opportunity to knock the helmet from his head. in the end, after his abilities are used by charles to free himself, he flees. ya yeet.
at some point after this, he moves to poland and decides to live among the humans. he meets a woman named magda when he’s living as henryk gurzsky and they have a daughter named nina. he’s seemingly happy with his little family, working at the factory, until an act of kindness turns the tides against him. he uses his abilities to save a co-worker and someone reports him. police show up without any metal to confront him outside their house. nina, terrified and young much like erik was when his powers manifested, had the power to control nature and had birds attack the police. one of the officers was trying to shoot the birds and an arrow struck nina and her mother magda instead. erik, in his grief, used the metal locket around his daughter’s neck to kill every single police officer in the clearing and then dropped to his knees to mourn the loss of his family.
en sabah nur, aka apocalypse, finds erik shortly after this. he’s at the factory, about to murder all of the workers who allowed this tragedy to happen, when en sabah nur takes his revenge for him. the god then takes him to auschwitz and strengthens his mutant abilities to give him the power needed to destroy it. he agrees to be a horseman, to join en sabah nur in bringing about the apocalypse. shortly after this happens, he goes to sleep and wakes up in this timeline in 2020. he doesn’t know who’s done it, or it was something the x-men did to try and stop the apocalypse, but he’s livid and probably wants to go home. there’s nothing here for him — no revenge, no purpose, so if he can’t ... catch him starting up the brotherhood again and waging war on humankind again.
𝖕𝖊𝖗𝖘𝖔𝖓𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖙𝖞
erik carries a lot of anger around with him. it’s the trauma, the grief, and the after-effects of years of abuse. he knows best how to function when he’s angry, feels it gives him direction, and thinks that happiness leads to vulnerability. he thinks now that if he cares for someone, let’s them get close, there’s a possibility he will hurt them or they will get hurt because of them. his abilities work best when he’s angry, almost like he’s been conditioned that way, so he finds he’s most effective when he gives into the anger.
at the end of the day, his hatred is directly linked to fear. he fears that mutants will be persecuted for being different, for not living up to what humans feel is normal, and that they’ll be experimented on or killed if discovered. he’s seen firsthand what a genocide looks like and because of that fears that another will happen if they’re not carefull. again, he’s not wrong.
𝖆𝖇𝖎𝖑𝖙𝖎𝖊𝖘
he’s a class 4 mutant who can generate and manipulate magnetic fields. you can read more about his abilities on the wiki here but i’ll give you some examples.
magnetogenesis: the ability to create magnetic fields. magnetokinesis: the ability to control magnetic fields. ferrokinesis: the ability to control metal. ( thanks to apocalypse, he can now control metals found in the earth. )

Across the Universes (Harry Wells x Reader)
Rating: T
Summary: In a world where you are a mutant recruiting students for Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters, an unexpected turn finds you in a whole other universe…
A/N: ~2850 words. In the beginning, the story takes place sometime after First Class, as Charles first gets his school up and running.
This boy is unstable.
You hated it when they were unstable, but it was apart of your job. Charles expected you and the others to follow through. Recruitments for his school mean everything to him. Saving these kids from society and themselves rested on your colleague’s shoulders. Bless him and his grand altruistic schemes.
You give a side glance to Raven, and then to Hank, your teammates and fellow mutants. Together, you all should be able to calm the poor mutant preteen, but he’s proving to be quite the problem. He doesn’t even register the words safe and school and others like you when you try to coax him. The boy clutches the sides of his head and shakes it, his brown hair swishing back and forth in front of his face.
Is he gonna blow? What even are the extent of his powers?
Hank takes a step toward him with an extended hand. The boy looks up, but this time with eyes glowing a pale yellow colour.
In an instant, he’s gone. Disappeared. The sound of his house’s door slams from directly behind you.
Out of anyone here, you really should have seen that coming.
“Little bastard,” Raven mutters as the three of you burst out the door and scan the quaint neighbourhood.
“Let’s split up,” you suggest. “We’ll cover more ground.” They nod in agreement.
You scour the scarily perfect-looking street of houses. Nothing out of place, nothing unusual… Except for maybe that crying shrub?
Not exactly sure how to approach the kid, you decide to slowly sneak up to the bush, fearing that if he hears you coming, he’ll vanish again. As you round the shrub, the boy is crouched down with his head between his knees and sniffling. You want to comfort him, tell him everything is going to be okay. Especially under the guidance of Charles. When your hand comes in contact with his shoulder, he lets out a chilling scream and his eyes glow brightly again. There’s an distressing feeling in the pit of your stomach.
Like your world is being turned upside down.
It takes everything you have to keep yourself from falling over, but somehow you manage to stay upright.
A new voice sneaks up on you. “Are you alright?”
“Yes, I’m fine-” you finally lose your balance and stumble, but this masked man in red is exceptionally quick to stop you from hitting the ground. Wherever that kid brought you, it has seriously done a number on your coordination. Speaking of which, where is the kid? Where are you?
“Have you seen a preteen boy with glowing eyes and totally losing his mind?” you ask desperately.
“Uhh, no, sorry,” he says. “I think I would have known about someone like that running around Central City.”
Hmm…
“Listen, I need to find this child. It’s very important. Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters is the only place he’ll be safe enough to discover the depths of his powers-”
“-School for what now? Kids with powers? You mean like a metahuman school?”
“What the hell is a metahuman? The kids are mutants.” The man in red stares at you with a blank look like he isn’t following any of this.
Suddenly, a sharp pain in your head causes you to cringe. Your hand flies to your head reflexively. You’re having a vision.
Eyes.
That’s all it is. A pair of eyes zoning in on you in observation. The bluest ones you’ve ever seen, it’s almost unsettling.
“You dont look too good,” the red runner goes on to say. “Do you need me to-”
Those are the last words you hear before toppling to the ground.
“Where am I?” you wonder aloud after noticing you’re lying on a medical cot. A woman in a white lab coat comes over to meet you.
“You’re at S.T.A.R. Labs. You had a nasty spell. I’ve been monitoring you for a couple hours and other than a major spike in brainwaves earlier, your vitals are just fine.”
You blink at her.
“Oh, I’m Caitlin.”
“(Y/N).” You look around the room and see other bodies walking around behind the glass divider. Everything starts flooding back and you feel the overpowering need to bust out of here to search for the boy. He could be anywhere by now! You rip the wires from your skin and leap off the cot.
“Wait!” Caitlin calls. Heading straight for the door, you collide into someone; a tall, lean figure.
“I’m s-” you start to say into this person’s chest. It’s when you look up and into his eyes that you lose your train of thought. There’s not a doubt in your mind these are the same ones you foresaw before you lost all consciousness.
They’re gorgeous.
And then you step back to take in the man himself.
It gets better.
Is my mouth open? Close it, dammit!
“Are you the one who fainted?” he asks point blank. Lovely, that’s how this man will always think of me. Fainty McFainterson.
“Uh, yeah.” You give him your name first, then he replies, “Harrison.”
What were you doing before you were so rudely interrupted by this man’s beautiful face?
Oh yeah, on a quest to find the poor devastated, and surely lost, child. Except, as you try to tear yourself away from the gaze of this Harrison guy, a younger man walks into the room.
“You’re awake!” he notices. More introductions are made, and this time you learn the young man’s name is Barry. “I’ve been meaning to ask, you had said something about a meta- no, what was it? A mutant school? Can you tell us more about it? We’ve not heard of such a thing.”
How much should you reveal here to these people? They don’t seem corrupt or hell-bent on world domination to you…
“Well, it’s the brainchild of my friend, Charles Xavier. It doubles as a boarding school and a safe haven for gifted kids. And by gifted, I mean mutants. What you guys are calling metahumans, I guess. We’ve recruited a decent amount of students so far and we’re well into the first year of classes…” You go on to tell them the story of how the severely troubled youngster brought you here.
And how worried you are for him out there on his own.
“I know it’s probably hard to trust us, seeing as we’re strangers to you,” Barry says, “but we will help you find him. I think I speak for all of us when I say we see the good in you and the cause you work for.”
Wow. These people are amazing.
“Thank you, everyone, really. In the meantime, and in exchange, I can help with, uh, whatever you need.” Barry smiles victoriously.
“Well then, welcome to Team Flash, (Y/N).”
Barry is kind enough to show you to where you’ll stay at S.T.A.R. Labs, as you had mentioned you would like to be close enough to the monitors as possible. Cisco, yet another Team Flash member you’ve met, has hacked into the city’s cameras to oversee any sign of the boy. There’s nothing more you can do at this time, so you throw yourself down onto the make-shift bed the team has provided you in a back room of the Labs.
You couldn’t help but notice Harrison unable to stop staring at you as things were put into motion, and it’s clear he was trying not to be obvious about it. You would think it would be unnerving that this practically-a-stranger was watching you, but it’s not.
Maybe because you couldn’t stop doing the same to him.
Speak of the devil, here he stands, leaning in the doorway.
“You’re not from around here.” It wasn’t a question.
You hesitate before admitting, “No. I’m not.”
Harrison merely nods. “Neither am I. Different Earth.”
“Does that mean I’m from a different Earth, too?”
“According to the rate of your body’s vibration frequency on Snow’s charts, my estimate is you’re from an entirely different universe.”
“Wow.” There’s a silence.
“So, the kid. Does he have a family?”
“Not exactly. They abandoned him when his powers became apparent. It was just him, alone, in his home. I’m really scared for him. He’s only a child. His powers were like they were eating him alive. We have to find him. I’ll feel responsible if anything happens-”
“Don’t,” he says, sitting down on a chair across from you. “You can’t do that to yourself.”
You slump forward in your seat, subconsciously towards Harrison.
“I just…” You heave a heavy sigh. Harrison’s hand finds your shoulder and you look up into his eyes, fighting back tears.
“Would you believe me if I said I know what you’re going through?”
Your voice is quiet. “How could you…?”
“My daughter, Jesse,” he explains. “There was a time when she was… taken. We didn’t know where she was. It was the worst I’ve ever felt in my life. Save for…” Harrison trails off.
You aren’t sure whether to prompt him, but your curiosity gets the better of you. “…Save for?”
“Losing my wife.”
Shit.
“I’m sorry.”
Harrison shakes his head and puts up a hand to symbolize, don’t worry about it.
“It was a long time ago.”
You bite your lip and try to avoid his gaze.
“Hey.” He tries for your attention back and sets a hand to your knee, which is now all you can think about. It feels like it will soon burn a hole through you. “We’ll find him.”
“Thank you, Harrison.”
He gets up and says, “A shame you don’t have psychic abilities. That would really speed up the process.”
“Heheh, yeah…” Now there’s an idea.
But it’s not like you can just outright tell Harrison and everyone that you’re a mutant. Not with the trauma you’ve personally suffered from admitting such a thing.
Not unlike what the boy had suffered with his parents…
You don’t like to talk about it. Especially with anyone new. No one other than Charles and the company he keeps would understand. Because people’s ideas haven’t changed. They still get afraid of what they don’t understand.
What if Harrison doesn’t understand?
You’re starting to get worked up. What happens if you don’t find the kid? It’s been weeks and nothing. Even with you slyly dropping hints to your new team with where your visions suggest the boy is doesn’t help. You’re always a little too late.
Also, why did no one tell you half this Team was mutants sooner?
You began to feel a kindred spirit with Cisco as he shared the news of his Vibe powers. Then Barry entrusted his secret to you that he is the city’s famous masked hero, the Flash, the man that you met when you happened upon this place. Barry’s a sweet guy and you very much appreciated his trust in you. Truthfully, it made you feel guilty for not admitting your secret.
But how do you share something you’re so used to hiding from others?
A wave shocks through your body and you need to hang onto the Cortex’s desk to brace an oncoming vision.
A damp sidewalk.
A sign: Hastings Street.
An underpass.
A boy huddled under some cardboard.
It’s him. I’ve got him!
“Cisco, have we the outskirts of the city?” you ask. “Around the Hastings Street area?”
“Haven’t yet,” he says dubiously. “Trying it now.” Cisco enhances the view of the street camera and sure enough, it is him.
“Barry, can you-?” you start, but faster than a speeding bullet, Barry has gone and returned with the boy. He’s a little out of sorts and dirty and wet, but he’s alive. And found.
“We should put him in the pipeline for now,” Barry suggests, “so he can’t disappear on us.”
“Good idea.” He zooms off with him and Caitlin follows, much slower of course, with blankets and food.
You are beyond relieved.
Harrison pulls you out of the Cortex and into the hallway. “How did you know?” he asks, eyes boring into you.
“How did I know what?”
“Don’t play it off. You felt something. I could tell. How?”
I guess I can’t outrun this anymore. He knows.
“I’m a mutant- a meta. I’m psychic. I have visions.”
“Why didn’t you ever mention it?”
“Would you accept ‘traumatic family event’ as an answer?” Harrison looks down at the ground at your answer. Just then, for a couple seconds, your vision goes blank, and all you can see in your head are his lips on yours. At first, you think it’s wishful thinking, as you had imagined this before.
A few times, maybe.
Harrison and the room come back into focus when the vision ends. Your heartbeat has accelerated.
“Are you okay?”
“Oh yeah. Yup. I am. Just fine.” You’re babbling. Great.
“You could have told them, you know,” he says. “You could have told me.”
“I was worried.” Yeah, worried he’d think less of me.
“There’s nothing to worry about.” Harrison bows his head down slightly and goes in for a kiss. His hand is warm on your cheek. His lips are so soft, it’s wonderful. When he pulls away, you say, “I knew you were going to do that.”
He raises an eyebrow and steals another kiss from you, a deeper kiss that takes your breath away this time around.
“Did you know I was going to do it a second time?”
“No,” you say with what little breath you have left.
“Surprise.”
That night while you slept, you dreamed of an older man. Weird? Most definitely. This man was completely bald and sat in a wheelchair. He would call your name and ask where you were repeatedly. You could never utter your answer back as much as you tried, but you willed the thought of Central City back to him.
Something about this man seems all too familiar…
In the morning and throughout most of the day, your dream goes forgotten as you check Cisco’s metahuman app for trouble. This has become a daily routine you have now grown accustomed to. An alarm goes off, one you’ve never heard in all your time of being at S.T.A.R. Labs, and everyone rushes around in a frenzy.
“What’s going on?”
“The breach in the basement has opened!” Cisco says, panicked. “Quick!”
You follow the rest of your team (now armed) to the lower levels of the Labs. A huge body appears to be emerging from the glowing matter moving around at the end of the room. It’s a man that eventually steps out.
You’d know those metal claws anywhere.
“Logan? Oh my God, what are- how are you here?”
“Charles sent me,” he says, retracting his claws. “He and Hank had been working on some machine. I dunno how it works, but we’re finally here.”
“Finally?” Out from the breach steps another three bodies. They seem familiar, but as to why, you aren’t certain yet. Wait-
Those sunglasses on the man.
The woman with short white hair and the other with hers bright red…
There’s no way.
“(Y/N)?” says the red-head.
“Scott? Ororo? Jean?” These are some of the first kids you recruited for the school. Ones you’ve guided since they stepped foot in the halls. It’s them! They’re grown! They’re freaking grown-ass adults now! “How are you guys so old?”
“How have you not aged?” Scott asks. “It’s been like, thirty years.”
You can feel the blood drain from your face. What?
“Xavier’s been trying to find you and the boy for almost thirty years,” Jean tells you. This is almost too much to handle. You’ve been gone three decades? It’s only been a month here!
“Whoa…” is all you can say right now.
“We’ve come to bring you home,” Logan says, eyeing up everyone else in the room. You can tell he doesn’t consider them threats, even with their weapons. Barry runs to retrieve the boy and hands him off to Jean, who ushers him back towards the breach.
“You comin’?” Logan asks. The three former students watch you expectantly, waiting for you to follow them. Your feet won’t budge, as you turn back to see the rest of Team Flash silently observing the situation unfolding in front of them.
And Harrison…
His arms are crossed and he frowns at the possibility of you leaving. How can you leave now? After having met the one person that has the ability to make you want to stay anywhere.
“No. You go on without me.”
“Are you sure?” Ororo checks.
“I am,” you say definitively. “Take good care of the boy. Oh, and give my best to Charles.” They nod solemnly before leaving through the breach. Logan gives a salute. When their bodies disappear, you take a deep breath. You can feel someone move close to you from behind.
“So… you’re staying.” Harrison. Again, it wasn’t a question.
“Looks that way, doesn’t it?” You smile a little. “Unless you want me to go?” you tease.
“Never,” he says firmly. “But are you sure this is what you want?” Your hand slips into his like it’s the easiest thing you’ve both ever done.
“I’ve never been more sure.”

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You and the team worked tirelessly for a handful of days. You helped ease Erik’s mind when he got too upset, you helped calm Banshee before he tried to fly, giving him a bit of confidence that he needed to fly. You and Hank talked chemistry and biology, while you and Raven discussed her crush on him when he wasn’t around. Charles trained with you every day, and each time, the two of you had such chemistry and bonded so well, it nearly drove you mad.
Other than that, Charles and Hank assigned you to help train everyone. You would get inside their head, ease fears, help them see what was holding them back, and then you’d work with them. It was becoming quickly apparent that you were Charles’s right hand. Yes, he and Erik made a great team, they were pretty much your leaders of the pack, and you didn’t want to deny or invade on that. However, when it came to keeping uniform, you were the better choice.
You dealt with all sorts of obstacles of your own, dealing with the others, and even with Charles. He asked you to help him train as well, which felt incredibly foreign, but you loved to be of any service to him. You realized you had thought about your feelings around Charles numerous times, not on purpose, and you were sure he’d heard you, but you’d never admitted it out loud to him. Now wasn’t the best time. Not while everyone was gearing up to fight Shaw.
Raven had confided in you about the thing that Hank had said about being beautiful, she also told you that now she had feelings for Erik. At first, yes, you had a bit of a crush on Erik, but now, now he was just a good friend. Charles was the only man for you and he would always be, even if he didn’t return the feeling. So you let her cry on your shoulder, as you tried to explain Hank’s thoughts. You informed her that if she felt more comfortable around Erik then she should be with him. Erik was a lot stronger on the “mutant and proud” front than Hank, and that’s all Raven had ever wanted -- acceptance. So Erik would be the obvious choice for her. She told you of her plan to seduce him and it made you blush and squirm a tad, but ultimately you gathered your senses and told her she should do whatever will make her happy, whatever she won’t regret. She had kissed your cheek and bounded off to set her plan in motion.
Charles had confided in you about Erik’s personal vendetta, the one he’d seen in your mind.
“I saw it too,” you confessed. “But can you blame him, Charles? He shot his mother right in front of him.”
“I know that,” he said, pacing his bedroom as you sat on the end of his bed, watching him. “I don’t want to get there to stop Shaw and Erik is so blinded by rage and hate that he blows the whole thing. Do you know he asked me if I was naive or arrogant?” he asked, nearly rhetorically. Usually he was never this upset, but then again, his newest and closest companion was giving a stance, a hard one, against an idea that everyone felt very strongly about.
As a mutant, it wasn’t a political debate. Not one that some people felt strongly against the humans, some felt strongly with the humans, and someone was neutral.
No.
No, when it came to the stance of “Are you for or against humans?” there was only one answer to be had. A side to pick. You and Charles believed in humans like Mr. Nobody and Moira. Erik believed in humans like Shaw.
“What did he actually say?” you wondered, knowing Charles was upset.
“He said, ‘Are you really so naive, as to think that they won't battle their own extinction? Or is it arrogance?’.”
You nodded. “Charles...You won’t change his mind. He’s been through too much to believe humans can be good. It would take an act of God for him to see that they aren’t all the same.”
“That’s my fear, is that they are,” he confided.
“You think they’re like Shaw?” you questioned as he walked over to you and sat down next to you, your legs practically touching.
“No,” he stated, seeming exasperated. “No, but I know how people are. People are just like animals, when they’re hurt, they lash out. Someone like Moira might be okay today, while we’re helping them, but if something goes wrong, are we suddenly the problem? The thing that needs to be cast out?”
Your hand found his as you gave it a squeeze. “That will always be a question we have. But we have to have faith that not everyone is like that. How can they trust us if we don’t trust them?” you asked. “It has to start somewhere. It needs to start with us. No matter what happens tomorrow, or in ten years, or in twenty years, we can’t give up hope. There will always be non-mutants that will stand beside us and fight with us, not against us...We just have to get through the ones that want to fight us first.”
“How do you have so much hope? You’re upbringing was nearly has heartbreaking as Erik’s. How can you have faith after all this time?” he wondered with curiosity.
“You,” you said without much thought or hesitation. “You were my beacon for so long. I held out hope that we’d meet. You came to me in my dreams over and over, without fail. You could’ve given up on me, on meeting me, you didn’t know anything about me, but I’m willing to bet, something within you made you want to come back to me. Somehow, Charles, we’re linked, and not just because we’re telepathic. But because you somehow knew I needed you in my life. If people like you exist, mutant or not, then I have to hold out hope. You’re proof that it’s real. That having faith pays off.”
A small v formed between his brows and a wild look swirled into his eyes before he lurched at you, his lips crashing on yours, taking you by complete surprise.
The feeling of pure electricity lighting up your body, from your lips down to your toes. You’d dreamed of this moment for as long as you could remember, and now that it was here, you felt light, floating, dizzy, nearly ethereal. His lips were softer than you ever imagined, but they were firm, the feeling behind his lips determined as ever. Somewhere you were vaguely aware that his hand was resting just above your elbow. All too soon, the kiss ended, but you were far from sober from that kiss.
“I---uh--” you stammered, your mind and body not quite caught up to what was happening.
“That was…better than I ever imagined,” Charles breathed with a bit of a joyous laugh in his voice.
“You liked it?” you asked, a tad embarrassed and nervous about your lack of experience.
“I loved it. I want to do it every day for the rest of our lives,” he said in a low voice, a giant grin painted on his face as his slender hand reached towards your cheek to cup it.
“I’m in love with you,” you said, quickly as if you were ripping off a bandaid. You had to say it. You’d been putting it off, but with the impending war, you were tired of waiting. Tired of waiting to be yourself around someone. Tired of putting your feelings away for other people.
You were so afraid to look at him. To meet his eyes. You were so afraid of rejection, it wasn’t even remotely funny. You wanted to rant and say it was okay if he didn’t love you back but you kept quiet, letting him gather his thoughts.
After a moment, Charles suddenly said, “Y/N, I love you too. Look at me,” he gently commanded and you obeyed. “I have loved you from the moment we met. And not because I could read your mind, although that was part of it, but because you’re good and pure and compassionate and wise and smart and kind...You’re so many things, Y/N. You’re everything anyone could ever want in their life. More importantly, you’re everything I want. I know we’ve only known each other for a handful of weeks, technically, but I feel so connected to you. I want to spend a lifetime with you, getting to know you, getting to help you, having you help me with mutants.”
“But...we hardly know each other,” you prompted. Yes, you loved Charles. Yes, you wanted to spend your life by his side. Yes, you knew you’d never tire or fall out of love. Yes, you knew it sounded crazy. But you knew how you felt. Charles could just be infatuated.
“Read my mind and tell me I’m not serious,” he challenged with determined eyes. “I know it’s highly unorthodox, but when has anything about our relationship been normal?” he questioned with a bit of humor in his features.
“Never, I suppose,” you admitted.
“Right. And it doesn’t have to be now. I know I want you, I know I love you. I don’t need to know your favorite color or favorite band to know that I loved the girl whose dreams I visited for three years,” he assured, his eyes searching yours. “So if you’re willing to be something more...so am I.”
“I am. I’m more than willing.”
“Good,” he breathed before planting a lingering, soft kiss to your lips. “Me too. I think this is a good path for us.”
“I know it’s the right path,” you assured, your hands resting on his arms, staring into his eyes, finally happy with your life. Finding where you fit in, and with whom, with a perfect man by your side. You could take on the world.
Lily’s questions:
What is your favorite part of the day? (This can be a time, like the morning, or an action, like seeing your pet)
That moment when I’m about to fall asleep, and I’m just lying in bed with absolutely no thoughts.
What is something you’ve always wanted someone to do for you, but never told them?
I don’t know ?? I like when people create, but I don’t necessarily want them to create for me, you know?
If you could do something for the rest of your life without fear of going broke/getting hurt, what would it be?
I was about to say “swim with the manatees”, but then I noticed it said “for the rest of your life” not just “something you want to do”. Maybe just… explore.
Can you describe the color blue without using the word? (I’m so ready to hear these responses aye)
No.
(Imagine for a second that you’re not afraid of a fish trying to eat your foot, and step deeper into the water. At first, it’s murky, and all you can see is the mud you’ve brought up by dragging your feet along the rocky bottom. Careful! The rocks are sharp, and you need to know better, you need to make sure that your feet don’t start to bleed, so you don’t bring out the sharks. Go further, and start to pretend like you can float. Watch the water in front of you, take in a deep breath, and go under. Hold your breath until –
Now keep going, letting the scales wrap around your legs and letting yourself go deeper and deeper. Explore, see the fish, the coral, but then come up. You’re in the wide open see, and as you float on your back, you see the same echoed above you in color – the sky, with the sun still shining bright, though setting more and more by the second. The clouds are a soft floating cotton against the color, and it brings peace.
You go upright in the water, simple strokes of tail and arms keeping you afloat. All around you is a vast expanse of softly ripping waves, and as you stop for a moment, just floating there, you look, and you see.
And then you dive back under, met with the darker shade of the same color. It’s home, and even as you swim back to the shore the next day, you know to seek it. You can’t avoid the sea, and you see it everywhere. In the sky, in your friend’s eyes, in the too-revealing bikini of the teenager who arrived on the sand, diving into the waves.
You may blend in with the rest, but the color of the sea surrounds, inescapable.)
Best compliment you ever received?
I’m gonna go with when @thebookofsands drew me as a manatee mermaid. Like I don’t know if that’s necessarily a compliment in the strictest sense, but I still smile when I see it.
What is your favorite au trope?
Mistaken identity/wrong number aus. I love them.
What is your favorite memory?
One of them is my last time in orchestra for a musical in high school, we had professionals play with us every year because enough people never signed up. And one of the professionals, who played saxophone, and so sat next to me every year, told me that he’d really appreciated that I did orchestra and that he’d miss me next year and I was just… very thankful, because orchestra was a struggle sometimes since I was often alone and forgotten.
What is something you’ve always secretly wanted people to compliment you on?
I’d usually say my writing, but people do compliment that a lot. I feel like… people genuinely compliment me a lot, and that’s not even me bragging, I’m just ?? people are very sweet to me, and I appreciate it so much.
Hogwarts house?
Ravenclaw.
What is your favorite song at the moment? (Or your #1 played song on your phone if you don’t have one)
Honestly, idk. I don’t listen to that much music that isn’t the Jurassic Park soundtrack rn so if that counts, the Jurassic Park theme. Like, the main theme. The one that makes you feel really pumped up to get eaten by some dinosaurs.
Do you cry during movies/tv shows/while reading books/fanfics?
Not usually.
n3rdlif343va’s questions:
What super power would you most like to have and why?
Telepathy. It’s a risk, because there are good thoughts and there are bad thoughts that you’d pick up on, but it’d be very interesting to be able to pick up on what people are actually thinking. How often have you been in a situation where you just wanted to know, for better or for worse. Plus, I mean, I’ve already got the wheelchair. What else do I need to become Charles Xavier?
If you could cuddle with any fandom character, who would you pick?
Oh god. That’s a hard one. I’m gonna say Viktor Nikiforov right now.
Which Ninja Turtle are you?
Tbh I know very little about the Ninja Turtles but I googled and Donatello is the purple one, so that’s me. I like purple.
How much wood could a wood chuck chuck if a wood chuck could chuck wood?
At least 1.
Which one horrible fashion trend would you rock (in public) for a full 24 hours?
Bro, I have picked them all up already. I wore some mad hair feathers. What even is fashion right now? I dislike croptops, and that’s all I can think of.
What is your least favorite trope?
A/B/O. I just dislike mpreg, so that’s why. I have read a couple to support friends, though.
What is your favorite movie soundtrack?
JURASSIC PARK or star wars. But. Jurassic Park.
Who is your favorite ship of all time?
Oooh that’s a hard one, oh man. Han/Leia, probably.
What color are your socks?
I am not wearing socks today. My shoes were black!
Plane, train or automobile?
Train. I’ve never been on one before and I’d love to. :)
Do you like you like Green Eggs and Ham?
Well, I like eggs, and I like ham, so how bad can they be?
(I may just like them, Sam I am.)
Kasumi’s questions:
First letter of your real name
C!
Age/birthday
I just nearly said 18, I am a mess. I’m twenty, and my birthday is January 26th.
Favourite season (weather if you don’t get it)
Fall
Favourite fruit
Raspberries!!!
Do you have short, medium or long hair?
Long. It’s basically down to my butt.
Hanahaki or soulmate?
Soulmate <3
Angst or Fluff?
Ahhh there’s a hard one. I’m gonna go with angst even though all I’ve written lately is fluff.
Soundboard (help the writer with ideas) or beta (help the writer with wording/grammar)?
You know the answer to this one ;) But soundboard. I don’t pick up on grammar while I’m reading.
Do you still have an active ff.net? If yes, link
Oh god no. But here’s my old one if yu want to cringe at my Vampirates fic: https://www.fanfiction.net/u/2275402/manateesandmishacollins
Would you trade one of Phichit’s hamsters to bring Vicchan back to life?
I’m allergic to dogs, so my gut instinct says no, but I also want my son to be happy, so I’ll say yes. But also, Phichit.
Should Victor and Yuuri both wear white at their wedding?
Wear whatever they want! White, pink, blue, orange, black, yellow? Do whatever! Wear a dress! Wear a suit! Just get married, and do it quick.
--
As you can tell, I was tagged by too many people, and they tagged like everyone else I’d attack, and I don’t want to come up with my own question, so here you go. If I did have questions, I’d tag @somehcpe @thetiniestkotorfan and @maximumhetalia at least but questions are effort so I’m letting y’all off easy.
Deadpool 2: Who is Cable?
Now that we've met Josh Brolin as Cable in Deadpool 2, the bigger question is...who the hell is Cable?
With Cable making his film debut in Deadpool 2, where he's played by Josh Brolin (you know, the guy in a little indie movie called Avengers: Infinity War), it’s been a common refrain amongst casual comics fans lately to ask those of us steeped in the folklore “Who is Cable and why should I care?”
Five hours later, when our response ends with a pile of X-Men comics being used to light an effigy of Bob Harras while we chant “NO MORE RETCONS! NO MORE RETCONS!” many of those casual fans are often scared away from the X-Men, comics in general, and our homes.
I’m here today to give you a clear, concise rundown of the history of Nathan Christopher Charles Summers...ha! Almost got it out with a straight face. The reality is Cable is a continuity black hole, but there’s a reason why he’s enduringly popular and I’m going to explain it to you in one sentence:
He’s a badass soldier from the future.
That’s the core of his appeal. There are layers (and layers and layers and layers...sweet Jesus are there layers) added over that, but at his core, he’s always just been a badass soldier from the future trying to build a badass army to prevent his awful future from coming to pass.
Deadpool 2: Who is Domino?
Deadpool 2: Who Are X-Force? A Brief History
Deadpool 2: Who is Shatterstar?
Cable was introduced in 1990 to be a new mentor to the second generation of X-students, the New Mutants. He was more militaristic than his predecessors: Charles Xavier, the secretly monstrous founder of the Xavier school, and Magneto, the surprisingly incompetent reformed nemesis. He also showed up packing heat - he was covered in giant guns to the point where he eventually became a parody/poster child for the excesses of '90s comics. But at the same time, he was placed at the center of the third age of X-Men comics, one defined by Apocalypse and soapy family relationships.
Cable was eventually revealed to be Nathan Christopher Summers, the child of Cyclops and Madelyne Pryor, taken into the future to save his life after he was infected with a virus that caused his body to morph into a pile of loose technology. While there, he discovered that he was destined to take down Apocalypse, the nigh-immortal mutant who eventually takes over the world and turns it into a Darwinist shitscape. He jumps back in time and takes control of the New Mutants to help further that goal.
He becomes an interesting case study in comics storytelling - almost a decade after his first introduction, he actually succeeds in destroying Apocalypse and averting his terrible future (don’t worry, it’s comics: Apocalypse gets better). That set him adrift for a little while, but his core stayed the same. He was a badass soldier from the future, and he stayed that way whether he was fighting brushfire wars in eastern Europe, protecting a mutant messiah as they’re chased through the future like it’s Lone Wolf and X-Cub, or saving the world with his omega level telepathy and telekinesis after his techno-organic virus was completely cured.
His link to Deadpool comes mostly from two things: they were both created by Rob Liefeld around the same time, and they shared the headlining role in one of Marvel’s better mainline hero books of the aughts, Cable and Deadpool. In that, Nate was mostly just the straight man in a straightforward superhero action/humor comic. Deadpool would do his thing (Bugs Bunny with an arsenal) while Cable did his (overpowered messiah saving the world with over-the-top action). It was a solid examination of some of Cable’s more absurd character elements, while also being a good, epic X-Men comic.
Most recently, Cable had a new series announced at Marvel. In it, he’ll be (wait for it) a badass soldier from the future, jumping through time to protect the timestream. So it looks like they see what we’ve been enjoying, too.
ALTERNATE VERSIONS
- In the Age of Apocalypse, Nate Grey was a clone made by Mr. Sinister to eventually challenge Apocalypse’s dominance. He was shunted to the 616 reality at the end of that mini-event and served no purpose in the main universe for a little while, until he was later reimagined as a weird mutant shaman and continued to serve no purpose but without being a direct rip on Cable.
- Ultimate Cable is genuinely funny. The Ultimate Universe was a stripped down version of the main Marvel universe, a direct response to '90s excesses in convoluted continuity and overused guest appearances. With that in mind, Ultimate Cable was actually a future version of Wolverine.
- Cable also appeared as a playable character in Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. He had a giant gun beam spam move, and anyone who chose him was of loose morals.
Read the latest Den of Geek Special Edition Magazine Here!
KEY STORIES
New Mutants #87 - Cable’s first appearance. It’s easy to see why he got so many people pumped. Rob Liefeld’s art, while not everyone's cup of tea, was also full of energy and enthusiasm and a lot of fun to look at.
X-Cutioner’s Song - This 1992 X-Men crossover is almost entirely gibberish. This is where the Summers connection was revealed, and it was all about Cable, Stryfe, Cyclops, Jean, and Apocalypse. The art, however, is actually pretty good. It’s got early Jae Lee, Greg Capullo, Andy Kubert ,and Brandon Peterson, and they do a great job of giving the reader something to do besides get a headache trying to chart a family tree.
The Twelve - Again, this is not a good comic, but it’s the pivot point of Cable’s story: here is where he stopped being Apocalypse’s nemesis and started being an ex-messiah.
Cable & Deadpool - This is where people started taking Cable seriously again. It was a fun, fairly uncomplicated superhero book that had great Deadpool moments, and did a lot of good character work on Nate.
Messiah Complex, Cable (vol. 2), Messiah War, and X-Men: Second Coming - This is my personal favorite era of X-Men comics. The three big crossovers are all very good, and focused on Cable and Hope. Cable’s solo book is also excellent, and you get some really good Badass Nathan Summers stuff in all of these.
X-Force vol. 4 - Simon Spurrier is a madman. This series is like if Grant Morrison played with Transformers as a kid: it’s got a vivid ‘80s feel to it, but it’s just weird and good. This series prominently features a character whose mutant power is you forget about him if you’re not looking directly at him. And it has Dr. Nemesis, who is hilarious.
Uncanny Avengers - Gerry Duggan’s latest version of the X-Men/Avengers hybrid team has actually morphed into a follow up to Cable & Deadpool. It’s a straightforward superhero action book, but it’s got good character bits and is almost Busiek-like in its appreciation of Avengers and X-Men continuity.
Deadpool 2 opens on May 18.
Sweet 16 roundtable: Intriguing matchups, predictions for NCAA tournament regionals
yahoo
With a wild first weekend of the 2018 NCAA tournament in the books, the ensuing mid-week lull coming to a close, and the Sweet 16 approaching, Yahoo Sports convened a few of its college basketball writers for a roundtable.
We put six questions to them – three looking back on rounds one and two, and three looking ahead to the regionals, which begin Thursday. Here’s how they responded …
1. Other than Virginia, what pre-tournament opinion are you willing to admit you were wrong about?
Jeff Eisenberg: I was most wrong about Michigan State. I thought the Spartans were a national title threat if they got past Duke in the Sweet 16. They instead didn’t even make it to that game, falling to Syracuse amid a hail of turnovers and rushed 3-pointers. In retrospect, while the Spartans boasted two lottery picks and considerable talent around them, they only beat three NCAA tournament teams all season — Purdue, North Carolina and Bucknell. Perhaps the pieces didn’t quite fit together well enough for Michigan State to meet expectations.
Syracuse flummoxed Michigan State’s offense in the round of 32. Can it do the same to Duke in the Sweet 16?
Henry Bushnell: I’ll second everything Jeff just wrote about Sparty, then raise him North Carolina. I thought the Tar Heels’ newfound inside-outside balance and stretchiness, with Luke Maye and Cam Johnson, would get them back to the Final Four. Instead, those were the principle causes of their downfall when they turned into 3-pointer dependence and interior inferiority against Texas A&M.
Zach Pereles: I was really high on St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies boasted a terrific senior-led backcourt, shot it well from 3 and defended the 3 well on the other end. I had them in the Sweet 16. But Jaylen Adams and backcourt mate Matt Mobley struggled mightily against Florida, combining to shoot 5 for 19 (and just 1 of 12 from 3). Adams and Mobley were thoroughly outmatched by Florida’s talented backcourt.
2. What else – team, player, trend, anything – really surprised you from the first two rounds? Again, non-UMBC-Virginia division.
Eisenberg: Buffalo emptying its bench in a 20-point blowout of Arizona was not something I saw coming. Yes, Arizona was flawed defensively all season. Yes, Arizona had a lot of off-court baggage. But getting run off the court in the first round at the hands of the MAC champion? That surprised me.
Bushnell: Florida State came out of a nowhere for me. An early Xavier loss didn’t, but there was nothing about the Seminoles that screamed upset potential. We’ll see how legitimate or fluky their run is against Gonzaga on Thursday.
I also didn’t see Nevada coming at all. It had looked pretty ordinary in March prior to the NCAA tournament, losing twice to San Diego State and struggling with UNLV. (Frankly, it looked pretty ordinary for about 60 of the 85 minutes it played last weekend, too.) But I suppose this is a lesson in not letting recency bias cloud out an entire season. The Wolf Pack have a top-10 offense nationally, and when they get hot, they get hot.
Pereles: How about the Texas A&M Aggies? I’m not necessarily surprised at the level at which they’ve played — the Aggies can be about as good as anyone when they want to be — but they’ve had serious mental lapses and issues with giving effort throughout the regular season. They then lost their first game at the SEC Tournament. It’s a testament to Billy Kennedy’s coaching that he has Robert Williams III playing like the potential lottery pick he can be, Tyler Davis dominating inside and a host of skilled players around those two playing high-level basketball. It’s a pleasant surprise to see Texas A&M finally putting it together.
3. If there were a first weekend MOP award, who’d be at the top of your ballot?
Eisenberg: While Gonzaga’s Zach Norvell, Texas A&M’s Tyler Davis and Kentucky’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander belong squarely in the conversation, I’ll go with West Virginia guard Jevon Carter. You know him for his ferocious perimeter defense, but he averaged 24.5 points and 6.5 assists in the first two rounds while leading the Mountaineers to blowout wins over Murray State and Charleston.
Bushnell: With honorable mentions to Carter, Norvell and Cody Martin – and to Rob Gray despite Houston’s heartbreak – I’m going with Gilgeous-Alexander. Every time 3-pointer-less Kentucky needed a play against Davidson, the smooth freshman combo guard stepped up. He then put up a cool 27-6-6 line on 12 shots against Buffalo like it was no big deal. He averaged 23 points, 7 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game over the first weekend, and continues to do it all for John Calipari.
Pereles: Nevada’s Cody Martin takes home the MOP award so far. While twin brother Caleb was the Mountain West Player of the Year, Cody has been terrific in the tournament. He’s averaging 20 points per game on over 55 percent shooting. In the final 11 minutes of Nevada’s historic comeback against Cincinnati, he registered 11 points, three rebounds, two assists and a steal. He had two traditional three-point plays and hit a shot from behind the arc, too. Eric Musselman’s ability to transform two former highly-touted yet inconsistent NC State players into the cornerstones of a Sweet 16 team has been magnificent.
4. Which individual matchup are you most looking forward to on Thursday or Friday night?
Bushnell: I can’t wait to watch Villanova’s guards, led by Jalen Brunson, against two-time Big 12 defensive player of the year Jevon Carter, shot-blocker extraordinaire Sagaba Konate and the West Virginia Mountaineers’ defense. Statistically, this is actually Press Virginia’s worst defensive unit in four years. But it’s still disruptive and tough as nails. Nova takes care of the ball – enabling it, on paper, to neutralize West Virginia’s strength – and kills opponents from beyond the 3-point arc – enabling it to perhaps exploit West Virginia’s weakness – but its top-ranked offense will be tested.
yahoo
Pereles: Michigan’s Mo Wagner versus the Texas A&M frontcourt of Robert Williams III and Tyler Davis. It took three halves before the Wolverines’ big man got going, but he scored 10 big points over the final 20 minutes of Michigan’s win over Houston. And he’s a matchup nightmare for the Aggies.
Williams III and Davis could, of course, overpower Wagner on one end. But neither defends well in space. Wagner shoots it at over 40 percent from deep, and can put the ball on the deck to get to the basket. Even if Wagner isn’t getting the ball on the perimeter, he draws a shot-blocker away from the rim. In a similar matchup during the regular season against Michigan State’s Nick Ward, Wagner scored 27 points on 13 shots. He’ll need a similar performance Thursday night.
5. Which of the following teams is most likely to make the Final Four: Kansas State, Loyola Chicago, Nevada, Florida State, Clemson or Syracuse?
Eisenberg: They don’t have the friendliest draw among the underdogs mentioned above, but Clemson is the best team of the bunch. They have three guards who can score, they defend the paint and they’re peaking at the right time. Clemson is not a team who can exploit Kansas’ thin frontcourt, but the Jayhawks will have to play better than they did in previous rounds to move on to the Elite Eight.
Bushnell: This is going to sound crazy, but I’m going with Loyola. The Sweet 16 game could go either way, but if the Ramblers win it, their defense is capable of giving Kentucky fits. They have the shooting Davidson had in a tight first-round battle with the Wildcats, and they have the athleticism and switchable defense Davidson didn’t have.
yahoo
Pereles: Nevada. The Wolf Pack have length all over, the Martin twins can really score, and Kendall Stephens is one of the tournament’s most under-appreciated players. Eric Musselman’s squad should be able to overwhelm Loyola with its size, athleticism and skill, then compete with Kentucky for similar reasons. Plus, couldn’t we all go for more shirt-ripping and f-bombs?
6. Give us your “second chance bracket.”
Eisenberg: Kentucky over Nevada; Gonzaga over Michigan; Duke over Kansas; Villanova over Texas Tech. Duke over Gonzaga.
Bushnell: Kentucky over Loyola; Gonzaga over Texas A&M; Villanova over Texas Tech; Duke over Kansas. Villanova over Gonzaga.
Pereles: Nevada over Kentucky; Michigan over Florida State; Duke over Kansas; Villanova over Purdue. Villanova over Michigan.
