Busking Pt. 2
After a long debate I’ve decided I’m just going to go ahead with this. This is the second half of my Busking!AU. The first half is HERE These two chapters won’t actually be canon, as I have plans to slow down the pace for the actual longer story I’m planning. Anyway, more afterwards!
Pyrrha let out a muted yawn as she closed the zipper on her gym bag. She had finally finished her evening workout, but unfortunately was still feeling unsatisfied. Her mood had been rather poor since she had woken up this morning, and she had hoped to fix it, but nothing had worked that day. Normally working out managed to do the trick, nothing like a good work out to let out all your stress. But today even that failed her.
Shaking her head, she tried to disperse the negative thoughts. As far as things were going in her life, things were great. She had no reason to be feeling down. She chalked it up to just being “one of those days” as she hoisted her gym bag over her shoulder. She made her way out of the locker room, waving goodbye to her personal trainer, Nora, as she made her way out into the chilly night air.
The weather had been fair today, so she had opted to walk to the gym, meaning she had a bit of a walk left. A bit chilly, but maybe the fresh air could be the remedy she needed to salvage her night.
Making her way down the street, Pyrrha let out a content sigh. Combining the cool night air, the soft ambiance of crowds indistinctly talking, and her warm jacket, she felt her heart slowly settle in a peaceful state.
She weaved her way home, finding herself subconsciously taking a certain path with hidden hopes. Ever so slightly, her heart-rate increased as she rounded a corner. There he was. Pyrrha's heart fluttered just a beat as she saw a familiar mop of blonde hair.
Pyrrha wasn't quite sure when had been the first time she had seen that street musician, but based off her guesses it had to have been a few months by now. His schedule seemed random, but more often than not, she could find him on the corner, playing his guitar and singing his heart out. At first, she would merely pass by him as she would most street musicians. There were plenty out there in this harsh city, attempting to make their way. Not everyone could grab your attention, or you'd get nowhere. Eventually though, she had heard him sing one of her favorite songs, Shine. So she had stopped.
That had been the first time Pyrrha had really gotten a good look at the blonde. She found his lopsided smile and scraggly blonde hair surprisingly cute. His voice also had a certain warmth to it. Perhaps not one of the deep one like so many famous voices, but it resonated with something within her.
Her mom had always taught her a simple rule as she grew up. “If a street performer makes you stop and watch them, you owe them a few bucks.”
Pyrrha had offered him a tip that night and been on her way. More and more though, she found herself growing eager to see that same boy on that corner preforming, often taking the time to pause and listen to one of his songs and offering him a tip for his hard work. She hadn't worked up the courage to talk to him yet, aside from an occasional “good job” and a “thank you” in return.
Besides, Pyrrha was always a bit afraid of staying in one place for too long. Most people in the city were used to seeing Pyrrha out and about, and she wasn't stopped for an autograph too often, but it did happen occasionally. MMA seemed have been growing in popularity, and her status as one of the top female athletes certainly garnered her some attention, not all of it wanted.
The last thing she wanted was to distract from his performance if a fan recognized her. She could see how hard he worked after all. His worn hands, the emptied water bottles near the case from hours of playing, how he carefully managed all donations he received as if each one was vital to his survival. For all she knew, they could be. Even his guitar seemed to be a bit worn after what she could only guess was years of attention.
It was subtle, but Pyrrha could tell he put hard work into his performances.
Another small crowd seemed to have gathered around him as he sang one of the popular songs on the radio. Not Fall In Love With You.
Pyrrha paused, listening to the familiar voice work it's way through the song. His rendition was a bit slower, a bit more “acoustic” than the fast paced pop radio version, yet carried the same charm never the less. His gaze seemed to be fixated on her, and a smirk crept on Pyrrha's face.
Seeing his blush, and his look away Pyrrha just silently laughed to herself. He certainly did seem rather adorable.
Sure enough, a few moments later his gaze returned to hers as he entered the chorus. For the briefest moment, it felt like he was singing just to her. The goofy smirk on his face as he sung made her heart skip a beat, her mood infinitely better than when she had left the gym. She couldn't help but giggle at the boy practically confessing his love to a random person on the street as he sang the song. Pyrrha knew it wasn't an honest confession, but her poor, romance starved heart couldn't help but get just the littlest bit excited.
Feeling a strong urge creep through her, she gave in. His singing and playing had just lured her attention, and his gaze was practically calling to her.
“And like the autumn leaves, I just can't help myself. I'm falling there's no doubt. It's you and no one else. Is there any chance, for this dream romance? Should I just give up, what's a fool to do? Could you fall for me, like I fell for you?”
Pyrrha sang the refrain of the song, stepping forward slightly. Her eyes widened a moment later, realizing she had gotten ahead of herself. A fear crept into her heart as she vanished back into the crowd. Had she offended him? He was preforming and she had just interrupted it, just because she had had an urge to sing. Seeing him so often had made him feel familiar to her, but surely she was just a stranger to him. She had gotten ahead of herself, her good mood having sapped away her self control.
Luckily for her, it didn't seem to have derailed him too hard. He managed to continue singing and finish the song wonderfully despite her rather rude interruption of his song.
She joined the crowd in applauding his performance, still mentally reeling from her interruption. Fishing through her purse she grabbed from her bag, she pulled out a bill. Hopefully she could try and make it up to him with a slightly larger tip today. She walked up as he was counting his earnings. The read head opened her mouth to say something, but closed it. She was too embarrassed to properly apologize. She dropped the money and turned. Maybe it would be best if she avoided coming by for a while.
Pyrrha froze when she felt someone grab her hand. Normally that would trigger her “fight” instinct, but judging by the situation she knew it must have been the boy. She looked down at him, embarrassed, but mildly amused by his startled reaction. She had been expecting to be yelled at, but he looked more like a deer in the headlights at the moment.
“I'm pretty sure you grabbed the wrong bill.” He ended with, causing her to raise an eyebrow. She knew what she had donated, but what kind of street performer went out of their way to ensure that they weren't accidentally tipped too much? Surely he needed the money if he was performing out here in this weather, yet here he was more worried about her coffers.
Pyrrha just shook her head. “I think that was a lovely performance. It's the least I can do for allowing me to join you for part of it.” She added a bit sheepishly. That was a lot more of a clumsy attempt at an apology than she had been hoping for, but she hoped he understood. She gently closed his hand around the bill. “Thank you.”
Staring at his expression, Pyrrha once again felt an urge bubbling up in her chest. “But I did forget something.” She remarked as she quickly fished through her gym bag. She knew she only had a few moments before her confidence failed her so she had to act quickly.
She pulled out a piece of paper and a pen, glad that she always made sure to have materials on hand for a autograph. She quickly scribbled down her personal number, pausing for a moment to really wonder if she wanted to do this. A glance at him had made up her mind though. She saw his soft smile as he reached down into his case, carefully storing the money, practically glowing with happiness. She was glad she could have helped. It was really strange how the same bill can have such different meanings depending on who's holding it.
Reaching down, she deposited her number into the case. She had wanted to hand it to him directly, but her confidence was failing her. She looked away as he grabbed the number, unable to meet his gaze for the moment as she tried to fight the creeping warmth off her face.
“I mean... if you want to meet up again sometime. I'd love to hear you sing again.” She stammered out, cursing her shakey voice. She was a grown woman, why she was still nervous like a teenage girl. Oh, cause she had no experience with this sort of behavior at all. Right.
“I'd love to!” His eagerness had her looking back at him, a relieved sigh escaping her. Apparently luck was on her side tonight.
“Uh! I'm Jaune. Jaune Arc.” He said, stammering. Pyrrha was relieved she wasn't the only one who seemed to be nervous.
Taking his hand, she laughed slightly. “Pyrrha Nikos.” She said, barely pausing before saying her name. She watched him carefully, waiting for any sign of recognition, but he just seemed to be happy to meet her, as he repeated her name back to her.
Another breeze tore through the street, sending a shiver down Pyrrha's spine. As much as she wanted to stay, she knew she had to get home before she got a cold. Plus, he had been on his way when she had stopped him. She shouldn't take up too much of his time. Secretly as well, she knew that if they talked much longer, her heart was either going to burst, or she was going to completely ruin the opportunity by shoving her foot in her mouth.
“Well, I should be going. I look forward to hearing you sing again.” She said, offering him a genuine smile as she waved. She turned and quickly made her way back towards her home. She may be running away slightly, but she needed to escape. She couldn't help the slight bounce in her step.
I got a date! She cheered to herself eagerly. She still wasn't sure exactly why she had decided to take the leap tonight and ask him out, but she was glad she did. Her few minutes of talking with him had set her heart aflutter like never before.
Shaking her head, she tightened her grip on her gym bag. She needed to keep her head in the game. Take things slow, reasonable. Rushing into things could be a disaster.
Still...
Pyrrha couldn't wait to talk to her trainer Nora about this. She definitely needed advice, and she was the only one she could turn to.
She couldn't wait to hear from him.
Jaune Arc, huh?

Yeah! So I hope you enjoyed this. I’m going to be bouncing between this and my Band!AU. I kinda wanted to work on a more mature story as well, where all the characters a little older and more mature. These two chapters aren’t canon in that AU. I’m going to be taking a much slower pace with it and tweak some stuff. This chapter was mostly written to announce that I will be relauncing it when I posted it to my fanfiction account. But I’m excited to have the gang all together in this reallife AU.
And yes, I’m still trying to get the last chapter of my Mechanic!AU out. It’s just providing endless amounts of frustration along with a lack of motivation. But it should come out soon, I’m going to try to force myself to work through it soon enough.
Thank you for reading! I hope you have a wonderful day! :D
