I also think there is also this other aspect to Blaine, where he is very neutral about other people praising him? It goes as far back as the Warblers (who Blaine didnt mind leaving at moment's notice in S3) but it persists through S3 with Sebastian (who he treats with mild amusement at the very most, imo) and S4 with Tina (i felt that there was a hint of annoyance too when she got excessive with compliments) and even in S5, he's ready to sacrifice June's approval and praise to be with Kurt.

I also think it makes a lot of sense with how this seems to be a Kurt specific thing, stemming from Kurt understanding him and seeing through him in such a manner, since Blaine generally doesn't like it when other people, like Cooper, Finn, or to an extent, Sam, get a little mean. So it's not like a consistent and peculiar love language across the board, just a Kurt specific thing. No to mention that the compliments Blaine usually receives are a little generic, I've always found? Like they could be said about any attractive person with a nice voice, but Kurt's teasing usually gets so specific and undeniably about Blaine, it is somehow more personal lol. (Am I just a bit insane making this point?)

I think it's because Kurt is so emotionally perceptive (he recognizes that Burt would want a more masculine son like finn in Home, he recognizes how much Dave is hurting in PQ and Dave even breaks down shortly after, just two examples off the top of my head, but it's a consistent and recurring thing with him) and because he is able to give tough love (not just to Blaine either, the other most notable example is Rachel) Blaine knows Kurt is always genuine, even when he's teasing or being a little a mean; or when praising him.

As for OS in specific, even Blaine says that he just "pretends to know what he is doing" - I think Blaine has a bit of "fake it til you make it" mentality, so he does believe that the model student and prep dreamboat boyfriend are him, which is why he is so protective over being viewed like that instead of his real self. Like he does not want anyone to understand how the illusion works. He acts out all of these ideals and because he is not quite there yet, he does not want anyone to jinx it by getting to know him.

And then Kurt calls him out in OS and that may be the first time Blaine does feel like he wants to open up and have Kurt know him better?

And interestingly, this realization coincides where Kurt stops being hesitant of showing more of his everyday self, not just the "please fall in love with me too" self. Not that he is pretending, but "Blaine and the pips" is way more reminiscent of McKinley Kurt LOL. So Blaine and Kurt seeing through each other like that is a pretty defining beat of OS and why they could move out from the mentor/mentoree, idol/fan dynamic and be considered equals more.
