Hey star! I really want to get into writing, but ive never been the best at it. Do you have any tips?

hi anon! good question! ^^

since i’ve started writing, i realized that it’s a skill similar to drawing, so you have to stay consistent if you want to see improvement. if you want to improve, i recommend writing as often as you can, even if it takes you out of your comfort zone or you’re not super happy or impressed with the result. also, just like drawing, it can be really hard to write without research and references! don’t be afraid to stop and reference online sources or your books for inspiration.

here’s my method/some extra tips for writing and editing!

1 ☆ have a general plan of how you want your story to go. i make a bullet point list of every event and/or dialogue i’d like to include. this makes it easier to stay on track and keep writing when i get stuck on a certain part.

2 ☆ when i write i like to listen to ambience music that matches the scenario, so for horror i’ll listen to suspenseful music and sad scenes i’ll listen to sad music. if i write for mcd i’ll even listen to medieval ambience videos lol (if you want some recommendations lmk!)

3 ☆ dont worry too much about it being perfect as you write. a rough draft is a rough draft for a reason. still, sometimes when i’m finished with a paragraph i read it over, and reference to synonyms and replacement words from google or pinterest to do a quick edit. (i also have a pinterest board of references i use, so if you’re interested in that, lmk as well)

4 ☆ if you’re having trouble or you’re stuck on how to construct a sentence, take a break and reference how an author you like writes. if you can, taking a few laps around your room/house while imagining how you want to continue helps a lot.

5 ☆ after you’re done, take a few moments to look away from your work, watch a video or episode and then come back to it with fresh eyes. if you have a friend, ask them to read over your work and suggest edits if they want. reference back to replacement words once again, and add extra details if the story seems to have moved too quickly. sometimes i repeat myself over and over in the same sentence, and i have to completely reconstructed a paragraph hahahha

i believe in you!! good writing takes work, but i believe everyone can be a writer, and everyone can be an artist. keep at it, and if you need support or more advice feel free to dm me! ٩(ˊᗜˋ*)و

2. Is it easier to draw someone facing left or right (or forward even)

i admit its true.. i am a classic "facing left" enjoyer... that isnt really to say i find it hard to face other direction, but it is just the easiest..but sometimes i go right if it just feels right in my hand.. actually, i think i draw characters facing right more when i am drawing with pencil instead of digitally

5. Estimate of how much of your art you post online vs. the art you keep for yourself

most of my drawings i end up posting, i dont care about clout i just like putting stuff on the internet. however, this doesnt mean i post the same things on each platform.. i would say, most of my art goes here on tumblr. when i draw traditionally, it almost always goes on instagram instead. i also tend to keep oc drawings on toyhouse until the last minute for an end of month roundup of drawings to post on tumblr.

11. Do you listen to anything while drawing? If so, what

i can listent to anything..firefox video popup is an enabler.. but usually, just music. or even sometimes just nothing when i dont want headphones in my ears... u also try not to watchh videos where i would want to pay attention to whats ons creen or i will just stop drawing and watch youtube

19. Favorite inanimate objects to draw (food, nature, etc.)

im a bad artist..i dont really draw objects.. but with pen before, i like to draw the reflections of lamps from the metal parts... oh yeah also nowadays i like to draw blood and stuff. i want to do more research in drawing meat and crap, but the thing is im not really a person who can think of what i would even draw involving bloody situation like that, so i end up not doing it....

Interview with Crystal Cola

Hi, Crystal Cola! Thanks for agreeing to speak with us about your music and other stuff! Tell us please, how was your project created?

I first started this project back in late 2015 just for fun. I didn’t plan on releasing anything at that time and just wanted to challenge myself to create music influenced by my favorite artists and video games. After I recorded a few songs, I thought to release it for feedback and people seemed to really like it, so I decided to take it further and eventually made my first album, Ocean Breeze.

When someone’s talking about original city pop music, it’s mainly about Japan during the economic bubble of the second half of the 1980s and j-pop artists of that time. In your opinion, does the modern city pop have these elements which were in 1980`s music? Can modern city pop be regarded as a sort of vaporwave music?

If there was any kind of influence economically on the music from the bubble era, I don’t think the economy of today is the same as it was back then since we are in more of a recession now. I think it could be that we are looking back at a time of great prosperity and want to re-create the feeling of that era by making music that sounds like the kind from that time period. I suppose you can say it’s got elements of the vaporwave pastiche, but that also feels like it takes away from some of the truly solid efforts of musicians making new city pop.

What is the source of your creativity? In your opinion, where’s the source of 80`s Japanese pop uniqueness and why it`s the huge source of future funk remixes?

I think like most of my peers, we like this style of music because it was popular when we were young and listening to it and writing music like this feels very nostalgic. In Japan there was city pop but in the west, there was similar music like yacht rock, jazz fusion and even music in anime, which was becoming popular and mainstream in the west, so we were all exposed to this style in one way or another. Future funk uses these songs as a source because they have this nostalgic quality and much city pop is disco influenced which lends itself to be remixed easily because of the 4/4 time signature.

Tell us your secret: how do you manage to achieve such atmospheric sounds like from 80`s retro anime or TV shows? What is the world created in your music?

The best way to achieve the sounds from the 80s is to use technology from that time period. Synthesizers and VST’s based on synthesizers from that time period are what I use. The Korg M1 is used a lot in my songs, along with the D50 and DX7. I spent a while researching equipment set ups by city pop musicians. I also watched a lot of Youtube videos of them playing live to see playing techniques and instrument rigs. Analyzing songs was very helpful to me when it came to constructing my own music. I grew up with retro anime, so it remains a big influence on my music and some of that songwriting comes naturally.

If talking about something closely connected with Japan, it`s impossible not to say about anime. Do you think old anime is better than modern? Name us your three most beloved titles!

A lot of my favourite anime is older, but there is a lot of great new anime’s now! One Punch Man, Mob Psycho 100 are excellent new anime, and my friend introduced me to an anime called Overlord which I really like. My top 3 anime however are Kimagure Orange Road, Ranma 1/2, and FLCL. I’ve heard really good things about Heart Cocktail and I want to watch that next!

Imagine that you got in 1986 in Tokyo`s center, say, through time travel. Your next steps?

Hmm, after a period of panic, probably I’d try to figure out how to get to the Air Records HQ and try to work with my favourite artists from the time period, as unlikely as that would be, haha.

Have you ever performed anywhere with your music? If not, do you have any plans to do so? What would you prefer: to play on 100% Electronicon fest or some small concert area somewhere in Japan?

I have not performed live yet, though I am not opposed to it. I would have to work out the logistics of performing it live, I’m not sure how I’d do that. I think I’d rather start with a small concert area before moving on to a bigger festival event.

I noticed that on Bandcamp fan page you have many chillwave releases and not a single one city pop album. Do you plan to close your project in future and move to chillwave?

A lot of my friends in the online music scene are in the chillwave genre. I was introduced to them after meeting my friend A.L.I.S.O.N. We both enjoyed each other’s music and began working together on some things which led us to other artists who we all talk with on the chillsynth community discord group. While I am a part of this group, I wouldn’t describe my style as chillwave. I’ve tried making music in this style, such as the song Zenith from my EP Orion, but I didn’t feel it was very successful, my style is too city pop at heart, haha. No, I don’t think I will stop my city pop style. In fact, my next album is looking to be even more city pop than my previous releases.

So the last question is: your project is anonymous and you asked me to not talk about your person and geographic location. Do you think the anonymity of an artist is an important part of the music aesthetics or it`s something else?

I dont think it’s important to the aesthetic as there has been many artists who are not anonymous and do quite well with fans. For me, I just like having my music as the centre of attention rather than myself, so I try to maintain a distance from it if I can.

“Welcome class,” the teacher greeted you all brightly, “I’m glad you could make it after school today, what with all the rain and all I assumed only two or three of you would have shown up today. Anyways, you know what to do. Best get to it.” She clapped her hands, before turning her heel and moving to write on the board, writing ‘Integrated Arts Club’ in a cursive calligraphy font. That was her contribution to the club. Calligraphy.

You sighed. This was a way for you to escape the harsh reality of the outside world. Half the students in this club were members of the community, no scratch that, the majority of students were gay. There was maybe only one or two straight people apart of this club.

You took out your paints, paintbrushes, pencils, and then got your canvas from inside the supply closet where you had left it yesterday. It was your newest project, a painting of a woman in white, with bright red lips and a black dress that blended into the black background of your canvas. You were inspired by a woman you had seen one night on the streets of Queens.

Taking a seat by yourself- taking up the whole table with your paints and brushes spread everywhere- you began painting. Everything was already finished, you just needed the details. You heard the door open and close, only choosing to look up when you finished an eyelash stroke.

“Yeah, this is where I go after school. That over there is Mia- the one spray painting the poster paper- and the dude over there with the guitar is Jay. That over there is (y/n), their bigender so I’d just use androgynous pronouns for them. Over there is Ms. Burningham, our club sponsor, and the dude in the corner is Max, he’s a comic book artist. You’d fit right in, Peter.”

The voice belonged to MJ, a close friend of yours. She often helped give you inspiration, letting you paint some of her sketches to life. You heard her walk behind you, leaning down so her hair was in your peripheral vision. You looked up, “Yo, MJ.” You smiled at her, then up at the newbie.

He was short, about an inch or so shorter than you, with brown eyes and hair. He wore a sweater over another shirt, jeans, and ha a camera in his hands. He was trembling, probably nervous.

“Hey, ahh, who’s this?” You asked MJ, who looked at Peter. She leaned back against the table, her palms getting paint on them from the splatters that had fallen off your plate of paint.

“Parker- Peter. Peter Parker. Nice to meet you.”

He went to shake your hand, you lifted yours up to show him you had gotten black and red all over them, “Sorry, dont wanna mess up your hands. That camera looks expensive.”

Peter made a small ‘oh’ noise, looking down to his small Canon camera. “Yeah, it- its almost completely brand new. I sold some of my old stuff to get it. Useless stuff, shirts and books and stuff.”

“Cool, cool. Uh, MJ, could you tell Jay to keep it down over there? Can’t hear my own thoughts over his wanna-be indie music,” you said, completely disregarding the boy in front of you now. It wasn’t that you were rude, you just wanted to get this painting finished hole everything was still wet, otherwise it would make problems later on. MJ rolled her eyes, but nodded. You flashed Peter a smile, before turning to you painting.

After about a minute of silence, you heard a gasp behind you, “Holy shit- that’s really good!” You looked up, seeing Peter next to you with his camera turned on. He blushed, “Sorry! It’s just you looked so calm and pleasing, I snapped a quick photo while you weren’t looking- sorry.”

You half-smiled, standing upright, “Thanks, and it’s okay. This class is freedom of expression. Just not expression, ‘kay? As in, no swearing,” you laughed and pointed to the lady at the front of the class, her hands busy grading the Latin worksheets. Peter nodded, surprise clear across his face, “Oh- sorry.”

“Can I see?”

“What?”

“The pictures, can I see? I mean, they're of me, right?”

“Oh- yeah! Totally!”

Peter pushed a few buttons on his camera, and he scrolled through some of the photos until he found yours. “Here-”

“Wow, i look hot!”

You moved closer to Peter to get a better look, gawking at the aesthetic that was put into one simple photo. You did look good in this photo. “Mind sending me this? Not just this, other stuff, too. I’d love to make a piece from these- oh, if that’s okay?”

“Uhh- yeah! Sure!”

You flopped onto the bed, curling up next to a pillow. It was cold from loneliness, making you snuggle closer to it. You looked at your nails- paint ad managed to get wedged between the nail and the skin, and no matter how hard you tried it wouldn’t wash away.

You sighed, ready to turn off the light until your phone went off. You checked it to see there was a message from MJ, asking you if it was okay to give Peter your number. You texted back, ‘Yeah. Totally.’

Three minutes later, your phone went off again and it was Peter.

“Yeah, right here,” Peter patted his jean pockets for a bit before pulling out a black and red hard drive, “It has maybe 20 or 25 pictures here. Their mostly just random pictures of places around Queens, hope that’s okay?” You nod, “Thanks Pete.”

That night, you went home and changed Peter’s ID to ‘Pete’. After that, you plugged the hard drive into your laptop, opening the file titled ‘images’ and scrolling through the photos. Most of them were taken at impossible angles, and you wondered how Peter was able to capture photos like them. One was at the top of a building and looking down onto a busy interstate. Another was of the stars, a bit of the background trees getting in the frame. They were beautiful. Another was of MJ, her back towards the camera, a backpack strap in her hand, looking to the left at the sky with a sunset background. You saved that image as ‘Michelle_jERKFACE.jpeg’ on your computer. The photo Peter took of you earlier was amongst them as well.

You went to bed that night with a smile on your face and ideas fresh in your mind, ready for tomorrow's Club Meeting.

“Hey (y/n)! Like the pictures i sent?”

“Holy Shii-shhh! Peter! That sentence can go two ways!”

“OH! Sorry...”

“Its fine, and yes I did like them. They were really good! How come you never joined before?”

“Never thought i was good enough.”

“Not good enough?! Peter, those photos are professional level photos. They are wonderful and beautiful and deserve to be in a museum.”

“Oh, wow, thanks...” peter blushed, looking own with a small smile on his face.

You looked at the scenery before you, trees brown and crisp from the fall air. Peter sat next to you, his camera ready to snap a picture at any moment. MJ sat opposite Peter, sketchbook in hand and sketching the trees and people. Ned was posing by a fountain as Peter playfully took photos of him. You started sketching Peter into your own book, smiling when you finished and began shading.

MJ looked over at you, “Damn, you’re gay for Peter Parker.”

You looked at MJ with a shocked expression, before looking at the sketch and at Peter, who was now out of ear shot.

“Totally,” you smiled, before both of you went back to your drawings.

“Peter,” you looked at him seriously from your spot on his bed, “Ever think about kissing dudes before?”

Peter blushed, “I- ah, um...” His eyes widened, before looking down shamefully, “Y-Yeah… more than a few times...”

Peter had your hand tight in his grip, pulling you through the almost empty hallways. His voice didn’t stutter, which worried you.

Finally, you made it. Peter pulled out his camera, “Stand in front of that street art Mia did yesterday.” You did just that. Peter moved your arms to move in front of your sweater, telling you to tug at it a bit and look up at the sky. He moved some hair in front of your face to cover your eyes. He knelt down, snapping the photo.

“Cool, now stay there.”

“Do you always get like this for a photo?” You asked as Peter pressed record, moving next to you, “What do you mean?”

“Nothing, um. What are you doing?”

“Its for a project. I’m gonna screenshot part of the video later. Please, this is important.”

You watched Peter as he took control of the situation, taking your (smaller/bigger) hands in is own, intertwining them as he leant up.

“Kiss me.”

You coughed, moving back. Peter moved his arms around you again, “Please?”

“Why?”

“The project- please (y/n).”

You slowly gave in, letting Peter wrap his arms around your waist as you looked down into his eyes, your hands cupping his cheeks softly. He leant up to kiss you softly. Both of you stayed there, afraid and unsure of how to move.

“I’m sorry,” Peter said after a while, moving away. You were quick to react, taking the back of his head and slamming it back onto yours.

“Mph-!”

He was taken aback by the action, soon melting and whimpering into it.

- drinking tall glasses of milk with just a splash of 0 calorie s'mores flavouring syrup u would normally use for coffees like it's water

- waking up at 7:30-8:30am with no alarm on weekends and soaking in extra hours of alone time and letting my brain jump to what i feel like spontaneously researching

- showering every third day bc my hair has finally been producing more normal oil levels. (want to be showering everyday but my mental health tells me to refuse to wear a shower cap)

- mentally checking out of conversations if i just feel like ive lost energy to mask or hide that im tired

- at work, maximizing being myself to reduce energy draining, reacting by instincts, and can just paint it over as trying to be goofy or entertaining to the children

- when i feel like im working too hard at my minimum wage job, i just match the energy of some of my male co-workers

- i am not embarrassed or anxious to tell work when i cant come in for the next day or need to change my shifts because of school. done putting myself through life endurance tests.

- i can notice myself spending way too much time on my phone and online and on a screen on days and times im not working and i dont like it, and im trying to find a way around it that doesn't just include cleaning or eating

- when i eat, i like to feel like im in a mukhbang, and acknowledge out loud how good the food is

- why is it always easier to get numerous consecutive tasks done so long as i have my noise-cancelling over-ear headphones in and MUST have/know my specific music mood playing

- could go a week unable to watch a single video lecture when alone, gets in a call with my partner and suddenly im the productivity champion chugging through videos and typing at the speed of light for the next 3-4 hours

- my music moods are never genres anymore, but go by theme i.e. "songs with male singers that have voices as deep as i think i hear myself in my head so that when i sing along, it sounds the same" or "songs that feel like angry women being angry, justifiably so" or "songs that make me feel hyper-feminine and dainty and diabolical"

to sum it up, im still mentally ill but ive been really looking out for myself for once instead of trying to fit in and make-look like i always have it together

side note, im v envious of people and artists who i observe diving into a project i am also interested in, and yet they're not held back by the fear of not being up the exact skill level i would think it takes to do or start the thing i.e. writing a book, webtoon, character design, original concept art.

I no longer miss the past me i lost in early 2020, she couldn't handle what's taking place these days heh 2 jobs, 2 finals, embracing more adult responsibility like no longer postponing my road test, i think i handle myself pretty well these days.

top five favorite fandoms

ok im going to do this based on the actual fandoms i.e. the people in them and its atmosphere

1. vocaloid: i know this fandom has a reputation for being cringey but honestly i think the “cringey” part was the outer layer of “fake fans” who only cared about the vocaloid characters and not the people who made the music and only listened to the most popular songs, and tbh most of them left by 2013ish when vocaloid stopped being as popular. this was kind of my first online experience of fandom, and i think it has a lot of really creative and cool people in it (especially since technically there is no “canon” and pretty much everything including songs are fan works)

2. pokemon: im actually surprised at how unproblematic this fandom is considering how big it is, it was really fun to play sun and moon with everyone else when the games came out because there was SO much fanart and memes and fan content in general which made my experience so much better! seriously there’s a crazy amount of really good fan content in general (a few weeks ago i legit watched an hour and a half long yt video some dude made about england hypothetically being a pokemon region and he put SO MUCH effort into researching its history and culture and writing a plot and commissioning concept art from artists, it made me disappointed that it wasn’t a real game agsjdjdk)

3. lifeline: i know it’s a smol fandom but i made a lot of friends through it, and some of yall are really good at fanart and stuff (like holly’s animatics!!), also it was fun to be super salty at lifeline universe, idk i just like the vibes of this fandom, it’s cozy but lively

4. the room: this might be the smallest fandom i’ve ever seen because it’s basically just like 5 people including me agsjhdkfkfk but i’m glad i went through the tag after i got obsessed with the games and randomly messaged someone who made fanart (alex) because we all ended up becoming friends and also we’re all REALLY into it so we’re making enough fanart and theories and headcanons for a bigger fandom tbh (ALSO IM GLAD I WASNT ALONE IN HATING THE CRAFTSMAN AGSJDJKD) (also i remember at first being paranoid that there would be exclusionists in this fandom but turns out actually 4 out of 5 of us are ace so uhhh this game is ace culture now)

5. rusty lake: OKAY EVERYONE IN THIS FANDOM IS SO SMART AND TALENTED AND I DONT KNOW HOW, like it’s a pretty small fandom but there’s people churning out super detailed fanart and embroidery and sculptures and stuff like everyday, and also sooo many fan theories. i also like how international this fandom feels, like it honestly feels like there’s fans from nearly every single country, and i think the devs are also good at cultivating the fandom because they’re really involved in it (seriously im like impressed at their social media engagement skills, also they’re SO nice which i find funny because it contrasts with their dark and grim games). i also love how extremely dedicated everyone is, like as soon as they announced their kickstarter everyone was like “HOW DO I GIVE YOU ACCESS TO MY BANK ACCOUNT” and I was like Big Mood (I bought the rusty lake paradise soundtrack literally just to give them money) (the music is HELLA good too, but i could have managed by listening to it without buying it, I specifically wanted to give them my money agsjdjfjjfkfkfk)

Open entry. Use photos, videos, to further think about global hip hop artists. Move outside of Canada and the US. Write about artists and why you think they are important for us to know about. 

I explored UK underground hip hop a few years back, starting with JayKae, a young rapper from Birmingham. The first time I ever heard him was on a youtube video from JDZmedia which was published on June 20th of 2013, and I instantly got interested in researching other rappers outside of North America, because the overall sound of his music was different from what Im personally used to, the slang is different, and his accent was obviously different. Now, Stomzy, Skepta, Giggs, Jme, and other UK based artists are more commonly heard on mainstream media stations in North America, and I feel like this only opened up this competitive industry to others culutures, merging not only the industries of global rap into North Ameican rap, but potentially may link our cultures, and acceptance once an for all as well.

So, recently I’ve noticed that there are a lot of upcoming artists originating specifically from China, Korea, the Phillapenes etc, and are making it into mainstream media outlets in North America. I find it really fascinating because these are places where Hip Hop isin’t the most common genre of music to practice, and in the Noisey interview (video #3) Keith Ape (discovered by Sean Miyashiro, founder of 88Rising media company), mentions how when people think of Korean music, immediately, you think of k-pop, and he wants to break out of that, and bring Korean rap here. He also mentions how North America has been very accepting and supportive of his music, like iLoveMakonnen. Which brings me to my next point, even in videos 3 & 4, all of the rappers reacting to both videos only say positive things, and even some mention how they would love to collaborate with these artists. In the first facebook video, the Higher Brothers (a Chinese rap group discovered by 88Rising too), Sean Miyashiro says, “You see a lot of people griping about, like, you know, the whitewaashing of Hollywood, and very little Asian representation in entertainment and stuff like that. And I think that our philosiphy is, the way to kind of break out of that is be really fucking good at what you do. Be undeniable. and do it yourself.” and then it hit me harder when  MaSiWei (马思唯), one of the 4 Higher Borther members answers a question about the hate on them being told that they ‘appropriate black culture’ negatively, “We learned its black culture. So, we studied from them. And now, its 2017. The world is more close. Black people watch Japanese cartoons. We listen [to] hip-hop. It’s same thing. Were more close” (5:18 Min). He explained something, I always couldn't explain because being a white female, I feel like some people are quick to take my words wrong, and sometimes simplistic explanations are the most effective, and I couldn’t have said it any better. In the second video, the best and funniest reaction is at 1:23 Min when Lil Yachty says, “And he’s going dumb, I dont know what he’s syaing, but it sounds like he’s going crazy”.  I laughed really hard because of the way he said it, and his face, but he made a good point ironically, we don’t need to know what they're saying to understand that they have talent, which is why North American music is interesting to people outside of that. Maybe more people will like rap music again, and stop worrying about the “youngins” that they don’t like.  It makes me happy, and its amazing that (in video 3) none of the rappers are butt hurt over “Rich Chiggas” name (he changed it to Rich Brian more recently), because they saw it as a harmless funny name, and they loved his music and looked beyond that. Rich Brian even mentions in a random interview how rap music taught him english, and who know maybe one day it will be more common to just learn other languages casually through music like these artists have.

Skills assessment

From the last skills assessment I would say that my performance skills have definitely improved a lot and my ability to do harmonies from remembering them and knowing when they’re wrong has improved not as much as my performance improvement but they have still improved nonetheless. I would say that my performance improved partly because we rehearsed different performance ideas and partly because this project gave me a lot more confidence then I had in the past two gigs. Also in this gig I watched a lot more live videos from the artists we were covering so I could get a better idea of how they would perform their songs. From this I would say that Wannabe was more like how the spice girls would perform the song then how TLC would perform No Scrubs as TLC had more set routines.

MY TECHNICAL SKILLS

I would say that over all my technical skills are good. Some of my main strengths and weaknesses from this area are my communication in performance with other musicians and the audience, this is a strength for me because in videos of the gig you can see me not only performing to the audience/ camera but I also look at the other girls in my group this made my stage presence good because I wasn’t just in one place I moved around a bit and made the gig not only enjoyable for the audience but for myself because it’s much more fun performing than standing still. However Hannah was good for going up to the musicians and singing to them this is something I did very rarely or not at all, this means that this is something I will work on and make sure I do in our next gig. I would also say that I have a good memory of lyrics as I didn’t forget any lyrics but I did go out of time during Torn on the Thursday and Friday gig making it look like I had forgotten the lyrics but really I had just come in at the wrong time, though on Saturday I didn’t do this so I had learnt from my mistakes of the previous two nights. Another thing I was good at was listening to songs and hearing backing parts within vocals that needed to be added. You can see in some of our No Scrubs rehearsal videos Chloe is doing an extra backing part during some of the song, though we took them out as when we were reheareing by recording the parts these backing bits weren’t heard, though looking back we still should’ve kept these parts in to make the song more althentic something I will keep in mind during the next gig. Another example of this is in Wannabe we had all vocal parts from backing vocals to two people singing and then the rest of us join in like the spice girls did, these can be seen in the chorus of the song and the second verse and then in the ‘slam your body down and wind it all around’ parts of the song. My final example of this is during Torn our acoustic song we add in the ooooo’s that can be heard in the chorus of the songs as well as a lower harmony. All these little things within each of these songs really make the song come together and sound more authentic to the original. Going back to timing during kiss from a rose sometimes the vocals would go out of time in the opening of the song making the opening sound not very good on a positive note this only happened on one of the nights. Though apart from the two times I have mentioned where my timing went slightly off the rest of my timing was good I just slipped up on these two songs so over all it’s a small strength that needs a little bit of work to becoming a big strength. In this gig I did a lot of high and low harmonies which was good as it showed off some of my range I also learnt that the melody line in No Scrubs is slightly too low for me and so it’s a good song to use as well as my parts in kiss from a rose to widen my vocal range. My breath control was good as I was never out of breath when on stage meaning that I didn’t get out of breath on stage and could hold longer notes easier because I took a breath before doing so. I can now include some song writing skills as my group did start to write an original song but however we decided as a group that it would be better for us to focus on No Scrubs which at the time we feared could get cut and we didn’t want that so we had to put what we thought was more important first.

MY MUSIC REHEARSAL SKILLS

Once again I would say that overall my rehearsal skills are good. Here are a few strengths and weaknesses from this area. One of my biggest strengths is making sure I warm up because I don’t want to damage my voice so each morning I make sure I do a vocal warm up at home so I can get the most out of my rehearsal. I would say that rehearsals went well it would just be that sometimes the band didn’t only wanted to rehearse one song of ours so the vocalists would go into a separate room and record the vocals for the other song this shows that we wanted to rehearse but the band didn’t always want to though this did begin to stop when the band would rehearse both songs with us and we would work through them. On giving and receiving feedback i would say that I would give feedback when asked but apart from that I wouldn’t this is something I feel that I need to improve upon so I can help other musicians on how to improve their pieces. However we would get feedback more because people wanted to listen to how the girl group songs were getting along we also got advice from Ant and Dave which I made sure were being listened to though we did slip up on this with Autumns guitar part in Wannabe as it wasn’t ready for when Ant wanted it to be but we got it in soon after. I would say that over all our ability to work through problems was good as we lost a member in the girl group and we just worked to replace her quickly which is good I would also say that because we had good communication with the band if someone felt like something was wrong they could just say and we would work though and improve it an example of this is in the beginning No Scrubs was too slow making sound less authentic but after a few rehearsals it got to then speed it’s meant to be. As for teaching other people parts I wouldn’t say that I did very much of this so that’s something I need to work on to improve. However people did help me with parts mainly harmonies that I would forget or the timing issue I had with torn, i am very greatful for the people who work with me on these. The only point I really helped someone was when I helped Chloe while we were recording our parts for No Scrubs as she would sometimes slip into the melody line so I would help to show her where she was doing so.

MY PERSONAL MANAGEMENT SKILLS

I would say this is one of my best areas. Some strengths and weaknesses in this area are- One big strength for me is attendance as I’m never late and i only had one day off because I physically couldn’t go into college but I spent the day getting better so I could go in the next day. As for independent practice I would say I’m very good at this because I spent time at home learning the lower harmony in torn because I kept not being able to get it properly at college but after a few times at home I got it and felt confident to perform it. This is also evident in that I learnt all my parts to songs very quickly and I would re learn anything that had been changed within a song. For time management I would say that I’m good at this because I would work out with some of the band when we could work on the girl groups stuff and then when they would work on the grunge stuff it’s good to have this communication because it means we’re aware of how the day is going to go which makes you ready to work because you know when you’re going to be working.

MY TUMBLR BOLG/ WIX SKILLS

My wix work is always up to date with rehearsal blogs being done and action plans being done weekly. It’s good to have this organisation because it means you don’t have to catch up and spend ages on your work trying to remember what you did on a certain day. I also did a lot more research this project and applied it to my work and have stated how i used it and how it has helped me. Foe nearly all videos of our rehearsals i was responsible for posting the clips which i always did. I need to work on looking at problems we faced because i think that i dont always look at the problems we had during some rehearsals.
