Like, it's only a single line in The Golden Enclaves, but it is very much supported by everyone's attitudes throughout the series: that for indie kids, "Alliance" seems to be its own category of relationship, separate from "friendship"; "family"; or "romantic".

It's something akin to trauma bonding, and something akin to marriage, and similar to our own concept of queerplatonic, and, in the end, its own discrete category. Which makes sense, right, because "the people that saved my life from the trauma conga line of hell" would be significant people in your life.

So there's all these social rules around it. That breaking up an alliance is fine, but ditching your allies makes you a dick. That it's the kind of relationship you announce to people, and then get congratulated for. That, in the Scholomance, it is not socially acceptable to share your wealth with friends, only with your partners, and with your alliance. That the relationship is expected to continue outside school.

It is fascinating, because you see how this operates in and out of school, with El's graduation allies (specially poor Aadhya, LOL) being treated as her representatives in negotiations; or how El is welcomed to Aadhya's home like Aad's introducing her boyfriend; or how they fully expected Liu to drop her entire life and come to New York to help rescue El's boyfriend, and the only reason Liu didn't come is that a war was about to pop, and that when Liu needed space to recover after a big trauma, of course she went to stay with her ally's family, and how no one was surprised Aad was going out of her way to help El, but Liesel must be up to something.

Mmm thinking about Liesel now. She’s a very calculating character clearly and she’s the one who most blatantly suggests that El isn’t quite a person. She admits to Aadhaya that the reason she has sex with El is because El is powerful enough that she could absolutely destroy the world, probably even without meaning to, and when someone is that powerful it’s important that she has people she cares for enough that they can pull her back from the ledge. It’s this really interesting in-between of acknowledging the personhood of El, of acknowledging her as someone with feelings and desires and someone who loves and cares, and also treating her as someone who needs to be managed, which would be way more insulting if it was anyone but Liesel. I’m not sure where I’m going with this, I just can’t stop wondering at how Liesel imagines El, if it’s all a means to an end for her and El is little more than a chess piece or if there is true acknowledgement of her as a person from the person who seems to have the greatest understanding of what exactly El is

thinking again about Scholomance, spoilers for the third book behind the cut

I really loved this trilogy and it's BECAUSE I loved it that weeks later I'm still thinking about how frustrating it was that Orion was building up as this extremely fascinating and ngl to me personally super hot character and then the third book just like completely fizzles on him? like I'm not saying the big reveal about the mawmouth stuff wasn't fascinating -- it was! it was wonderfully horrifying and the whole worldbuilding of the third book was great! -- but he has basically zero presence or agency in the entire third book and it feels kind of like a let down. And I don't even necessarily think there's any specific thing to have done recently, I just feel like Orion should've been along for the ride of finding out about himself and we could see his feelings about it and everything. Also the murder feels were extremely sexy to me, personally, and the lack of murder feels in the last book was just sad because I wanted more of it 😅

Just realized that Tristian and Liesel have contrasting party roles…Tristian buffs (and heals) the party, while Liesel debuffs the enemy (and occasionally does damage. if pressed)…I’m not really sure what to do with this contrast but it’s fun!

I js finished the book thief and OMG. I did not know how much I was gonna cry until I was sobbing. It’s sad when all the characters die but when all the others die and the mc LIVES it’s on whole other level. I will not be getting over this for days. I am in mourning give me my black dress. Anyway, it’s rly good book so if you haven’t read it I highly recommend. Please come join me in my pain 😊

Perhaps Khan simply doesn't get how humans work- or, perhaps, it's just Liesel who makes him smirk ever so slightly as he turns his head away, accompanied by a roll of his blue eyes.

He's sure she'll complain again in a few minutes... and, maybe, he'll actually give in and offer her his coat. Maybe. He's not sure yet.

Now that I've finally cleaned the dust of out of my PC, I can start doing my "canon" Kingmaker run.

Meet Ainsel, the Definitely Human (mechanically musetouched aasimar, but lorewise babyswapped fey) future ruler of the Stolen Lands. They became a traveling mercenary after leaving their hometown in the River Kingdoms (under less-than-ideal circumstances) due to their magical prowess and desire to avoid putting down any sort of roots, which somehow resulted in them getting the opportunity to establish a Barony.

For my personal fun and as a resource for potential future fic-writing, I'm making a "journal" of sorts here of the most notable things that happen in each in-game day.

Day 0 and 1: 13 and 14 Gozran 4710

Since they are from the River Kingdoms, Ainsel doesn't really see much difference between a bandit lord and any other type of lord. In fact, they're slightly insulted by Aldori's claim that she can't negotiate "with bandit gangs and monster hordes," because they feel it's a very reminiscent of the way outsiders view the non-Stolen Lands River Kingdoms. Also, they're defined as a monster by a lot of definitions! Fortunately, they are an expert at Not Giving A Shit. They also do not trust that people's stated intentions are their actual intentions, but they're used to it to the point that, if the stakes weren't quite so high, they probably would not comment on it at all to Aldori.

Not much to comment on here other than that Linzi is a lesbian :). And that Ainsel, despite not being an Amazing person, genuinely wants to prevent death when possible, since they have a fairly freedom-based worldview and, in their mind, death can be the antithesis of freedom, because the dead person will never be able to make choices again (at least, not in Golarion).

Ainsel is making an :3 face internally for this bit. Get dunked on Tartuccio!

Ainsel, internally: Cool cool cool I don't have any issues with being distrusted and viewed as a potential pretender. Everything is fine.

Edit: I changed Ainsel’s name to Liesel
