you jumped up as three perfectly timed knocks came from your front door. like a puppy waiting for its owner to come home, you ran across your apartment, nearly slipping on the wooden floor. you opened the door hurriedly

“spence!” your eyes lit up at the image of spencer reid in front of you, hair tussled slightly and a soft smile on his lips.

“hi” he spoke quietly, deciding to stare at you for a few more seconds before enveloping you in a hug. the familiar scent of leather and espresso making you melt further into his arms.

you placed a sweet kiss on his cheek before pulling away slightly, he shut the front door with the back of his foot effortlessly.

“what’re you doing here? i mean, its not like i dont want you here, obviously i do ,but, its like 10pm?” you speak quick paced and unorganized, but spencer was, of course, very used to it.

“i left my typewriter here” he said with a smile “and also i really wanted to see you and didn’t want to wait ‘till tomorrow” the last part was said with a softer tone, looking down sheepishly.

you pouted slightly with a smile before planting gentle kisses to the bridge of his nose and his lips, before cradling his face in your hands.

“of course, baby. you can come here whenever” you said, your voice smooth and tender. you grabbed his hand and led him to the living room, where his typewriter sat on the coffee table. the night before, you had asked spencer to bring his typewriter so you could write letters thanking the team for coming to the dinner party you’d organized, and also, it was exciting to use one of those typewriter you had seen in movies. spencer obviously complied, accepting any invitation that served as an excuse to be with you.

“here it is, safe and sound” you said, lavishly pointing to the obvious bulk of a typewriter that rested on the wooden surface.

“thank you for keeping it in one piece honey” he joked, sitting onto the couch and examining the keys. he knew you had kept it secure, it was just a small habit of his. you nodded, sitting back on the couch, observing him attentively as his fingers grazed the sides of the device.

“who uses typewriters anyway?” you laugh, leaning on his shoulder playfully. he shakes his head and chuckles softly in return.

he sits back with you eventually. leaning his head to rest on your chest as you held onto him, sensing something was off.

“you wanna talk about it?” you say softly, treading on sensitive territory. you knew how difficult his job was, and how much he kept to himself. even if you insisted on him talking to you, you never pressured him into giving you any information that he knew you were better off without.

he sighed. you placed his head onto your lap, gently. delicately scratching his head, undoing any knots he had. that seemed to help.

“im sorry honey” “is there anything i can do to make you feel better” you press a kiss to his scalp, continuing to stroke his hair gently, and rubbing his back softly.

“just, be here. this is enough” his voice was tired, fragile. you did as he said, running your fingers through his hair. you felt his breathing slow down, and soon enough, soft snores filled the room. you smiled and pressed a kiss on his head, laying yours back on the sofa, eyes fluttering shut.

after weights you guys decided to have a friendly competition on the stair master

he was huffing and puffing meanwhile you were still climbing the infinite stairs effortlessly

it was at that point he considered you a fitness god and told himself that he'd always go to the gym with you

the next day he was soooo sore lol he couldn't get out of bed rip

still tho you were nice and rewarded his efforts with some cuddles

Jeonghan finds himself going to the gym occasionally but the gym def isn't a huge priority in his life

however since dating you he noticed how much you love going to the gym

so he figured he might as well try it out too

but omg

he's trying sooooo hard to focus on lifting AND THEN THERES YOU

looking hella hot in your gym clothes lifting weights effortlessly

but occasionally he'll try to purposely mess up his form to get you to help if he's extra needy

doesn't care if he's sore the next day

will use this as an excuse to cuddle with you

until you use your muscles to break free of his grasp and haul his ass out of bed

this reminds him that maybe he should continue going to the gym

one day he'll have enough muscles to cuddle you all day

or when you're stretching he'll purposely flaunt stretch his arms while you glare as you're trying to hold your stretch

he'll also flex and try to lift the heaviest weights ever to get your attention

thankfully his antics catch up to him as he's superrr sore the next day

but he'd happily use this as a reason for you to take the lead if you know what I mean ;)

Minghao:

Minghao has become quite the fitness buff within the past few years

I mean look at those guns!!

I remember Minghao once said that it is super hard for him to gain muscle and look at him now ughhh

and seeing you succeed with your fitness goals makes Minghao even more proud

going to the gym is like breathing for you guys

you two always go to the gym together

and since you're with Minghao, every occasion has to be a fashion statement

you two are always wearing the coolest, trendiest, gym clothes that still manage to be uniquely your styles

it makes Minghao's heart flutter every time he seeing you wearing the gym shoes he bought you

especially when you're wearing one of his old gym shirts omg this man can barely even focus on working out LMAO and he's like the biggest gym rat out of all these dudes

ANYWAYS kinda like Jeonghan I don't see Vernon prioritizing the gym all that much

but once he starts dating you, he notices that the gym ends up taking a lot of your time

at this point you kind of become like his personal trainer

at first he was just watching you to see what you did with your dumbbell and tried to do the same

once you began to guide him you could tell he was a lot more secure

and he really did look like he was enjoying the workout!

tbh the gym really strengthens your bond this way

our boy Lee Chan is obsessed with the gym

so when he starts dating you the gym becomes practically your second homes

he's hella impressed with your strength for sure

Practicing tickle fights | Yamaguchi, Nishinoya & Hinata

Summary: Yamaguchi is a very reserved guy, but when he finds Nishinoya and Hinata having a tickle fight (again), he can't help but feel curious - what was it the last time he got tickled?

He was tired. He never thought practicing could actually be this… painful. He was sore in places he didn't even know could be sore and he felt like dying with every step he took, however… it felt nice. Despite being tired both physically and mentally, he had never felt so energized and motivated to do something, especially something related to volleyball, but there he was, feeling like his heart wanted to explode out of his chest every time he noticed progress on his serve and when he received praise from his coaches and even Hinata.

He felt that after this camp, he could definitely be of more help to his team and that made him feel so happy, he could barely walk- yet again, he could barely walk with how sore he was. 

“It hurts, it hurts,” he whined as he dragged himself outside, even though he wanted to rest for the night right there and then. He felt motivated, but he also felt like he could sleep for three years straight. 

However, he still wanted to do a little more practicing before going to bed, he just needed a clean towel and his water bottle… his water bottle. Ah. Yamaguchi whined as it came to his mind that he had left his poor water bottle alone back in their room. Now he had to go all the way back for it… would it be better to go to sleep once and for all? He whined some more as he made his way back to the room, fighting the urge to just go to sleep and skip practice for that day. Only one day… couldn't be so bad, right? 

He sighed, giving himself mental strength, but as he neared the room he couldn't help but get distracted by so much noise coming from inside, interrupting his inner speech about how persistence was the key. It sounded like screams and Yamaguchi was immediately worried, his feet moving quickly, in a rush to get there and see what was happening; he didn't know what to expect to find when he opened the door, but what he saw really blew him away. 

“SH-SHOHOUYOU!” 

“NOHOYAHA-SAHAHAN!” 

Hinata and Nishinoya were inside the room… having a tickle fight? Yamaguchi blinked, perplexed, staring at the scene. So that was all the commotion he heard from the other side of the hallway? A tickle fight? He sighed in relief, he thought something bad had happened, but it was just his silly teammates. 

Yamaguchi was very used to this. Tickle fights were a regular thing on the Karasuno team, especially between these two. Yamaguchi could tell from their big smiles and bright eyes that they were having too much fun as they tried to pin the other. Both Hinata and Nishinoya already knew each other's weakest spots and their skillful and quick fingers did not hesitate to attack those spots that made them throw their heads back with loud, hysterical laughter. Yamaguchi couldn't help but smile as he heard their contagious laughter, they really sounded happy even though their bodies desperately tried to escape when they were under attack.

How they could engage into these types of games so effortlessly would always be a mystery for Yamaguchi. Sometimes they only needed to look at each other to know what was about to happen and it didn't matter the time, both of them were so ready for it right away. Was it really that fun? 

Hinata's laughter was really funny, he had to admit, it sounded so like him, if that made any sense. It was vibrant and somehow cute. Contagious and happy as his personality. Noya's laughter was also so like him: loud, boisterous and free. It escaped from his lips without restraints and without a care just like Noya. He never thought laughter could sound like one's personality. Yamaguchi was curious, but there was no way he would-

“Y-Yahahamahahuchihi,” Noya giggled, pointing at Yamaguchi by the door when he caught sight of him. Hinata, busy tickling Noya's sides, stopped and looked up to look at Yamaguchi and he grinned widely. 

“Yamaguchi! What are you doing there? Do you want to join?” He was short of breath as if he had run a marathon, but he didn't look tired at all. 

But, what did he just ask?! Yamaguchi felt his cheeks blushing and he shook his head and both his hands no. “That’s not it! I just came here for my bottle, I'm going to practice… again…”

They were not listening to him, were they? Noya was laughing so hard as Hinata tried to pin his arms above his head; so he was surprised when they called his name again. 

“Yahamaguchi! C'mon!” Noya said, cackling a little when Hinata tickled his ribs for a bit. “Y-Yohohou nehever join us in a tickle fight! Didn't even Tsukishima tickle Kageyama the other day?”

Yamaguchi chuckled. Tsukki would do anything in his power to make Kageyama feel embarrassed, of course he would even join in a tickle fight just to wreck him, but Yamaguchi? He didn't feel the need to join, really, it was fun to watch so he never thought about actually playing as well. 

“Yes! Laughing is also healthy for your lungs, Yamaguchi!” Hinata said, giggling brightly as Noya squeezed his thigh. 

“And you won't believe the workout you do in a tickle fight! So come here, quickly!” 

Yamaguchi blinked a couple of times, he looked behind him into the hallway and then looked at Hinata and Noya again. Well… it wouldn't hurt, right? If he was quick enough, he could avoid being tickled, but even so… maybe getting tickled wouldn't be that bad, he thought. 

Clearing his throat, Yamaguchi finally stepped in, his steps slow as both Hinata and Noya sat up, grinning brightly and excitedly at him as they saw him kneeling beside them. Yamaguchi felt his hands trembling a little as he was under their playful gaze.

“Our Shouyou here will be kind enough to let you tickle him,” Noya said, making Yamaguchi jump when he placed a hand on his shoulder, the libero giggled. “Lay down, Shouyou.”

“Huh?! Why me?” Hinata whined, but he did what he was told and even raised his hands above his head. “Noya-san is more ticklish than me,” he pouted and Noya was quick to have his fingers digging slightly into Hinata's ribs, making him laugh and squirm, his arms half way down already. 

“Did you see that? Shouyou is very ticklish on his ribs,” Noya explained, vibrating his fingers in between the spaces of Hinata's ribs, making him finally lower his arms. “You can try it, Yamaguchi. Don't be too rough, though. You could hurt him and we don't want that.”

Yamaguchi nodded, his lips sealed in a thin line as he approached Hinata, who had raised his arms again, but was giggling like a kid. Yamaguchi would have chuckled, listening to Hinata's giggles, but he was nervous. He couldn't say he had much experience with tickling. He was an only child, so he didn't have tickle fights with his siblings. Tsukishima and Akiteru have tickled him before, but that was when he was a kid and he didn't get to tickle them back since they always ganged up on him. He didn't get tickled in Karasuno either, even though they did have many tickle fights, he never personally joined nor they made him join before. 

So he was not surprised when he finally touched Hinata's ribs and he simply flinched slightly. His smile was bright, but no laughter came out. 

“Harder, Yamaguchi!” Hinata encouraged him and Yamaguchi clawed at his ribs a bit harder, this time Hinata did giggle, jerking slightly to the side. “I cahahan tahake mohohore than that!” 

“Don't be afraid, Yamaguchi! It's just tickling! Hinata loves it, believe me!”

“I dohohon’t, you dohoho!” 

Yamaguchi was not scared, he just didn't know how to do it! He couldn't help but tense even more as they kept telling him how to do it. No matter how hard he tried, Yamaguchi could only make Hinata giggled slightly and squirm softly, nothing compared to when Noya was doing this. 

“I think I can't,” he finally admitted, stopping his tickling and looking back at Noya. “I don't know how to- ah, wait! What-”

He was surprised when he was suddenly pushed back by Noya who hovered over him with a bright, evil grin, showing all his teeth. Yamaguchi tensed and all the alarms in his head went off as he also saw Hinata joining Nishinoya. 

“I think Shouyou and I should teach you how to do this, Yamaguchi, don't you think so, Shouyou?” Noya said, winking at Hinata.

“Yes! Don't worry, Yamaguchi! You'll learn first hand how to tickle someone!”

“W-Wait! I don't think this a good idea,” Yamaguchi said, blushing. “I just wanted to get my bottle, I have to do some practicing and- aaagh! N-Noya-san! Nohohohoyahaha-sahahan!” 

Laughter escaped from his lips at the mere contact of Noya's fingers against his sides. Yamaguchi thought he had stopped being ticklish as he grew up, but now he knew he was very wrong, if anything, he thought he felt even more ticklish now, but it could be that he was a bit too nervous at that moment, actually, why was Nishinoya so good at tickling?! 

“Nohohoho!” He laughed, squirming and trying to push Noya's hands away from his sides. 

“You see now, Yamaguchi? You have to do it firmly, but not too hard and you are just as ticklish as Shouyou!” 

Yamaguchi could barely focus on Noya's words as he was a bit overwhelmed by the tickles on his sides, but he did hear Hinata squeaking out a protest, claiming that Noya was the most ticklish between them too. Much to Yamaguchi's embarrassment, they quickly came to the conclusion that he was the most ticklish among the three. 

“Okahahahay! Okay! I gehehehet it! I'll try ahahahagain!” He pleaded, tilting his head back with laughter when Noya massaged his lower sides, thumbs digging into the sides of his stomach. 

“Hey, I want to tickle Yamaguchi too!” Hinata claimed and Yamaguchi squeaked out a cackle when he felt his hands clawing at his stomach under his shirt! “He really is so ticklish, look at him, Noya-san!” 

Noya laughed, “this is why you never join us, Yamaguchi?”

Yamaguchi shook his head, jerking this way and that, but unable to escape their hands. “NOHOHO! Stahahahap! It tihihihickles!” 

Both gremlins giggled at Yamaguchi’s words, but they didn't stop, on the contrary, Yamaguchi felt as if their fingers increased in speed and it suddenly didn't feel like just four hands, but ten climbing up and down his sides and clawing and wiggling at his tummy. Yamaguchi giggled and laughed and squeaked, his hands flailing around, trying to push their hands, to cover his stomach, to drag himself out of it, but it was all useless as they tickled him as if they knew where exactly to touch to have him losing his mind. 

And yet, Yamaguchi couldn't deny he was having fun. He was able to pinch firmly at Hinata's side or wiggle his fingers under Noya's arm, but even though they laughed, his actions only backfired and they tickled him more. 

“I'll dihihihie!” He said dramatically, stubbornly denying the fact that he was having a good time. “PLEHEHEASE! H-Hinahahataha! Don't do thahahat!”

“What! What! This?” He asked excitedly as his hand vibrated right in the center of Yamaguchi's tummy, around his belly button. 

Yamaguchi barked out a laugh, nodding his head as he sucked on his belly, but as he tried to move away, Nishinoya held his sides in place, fingers digging in also making him laugh like crazy. 

“Poor Yamaguchi, he can't stop us!” Noya teased, giggling and whining when Yamaguchi's knee hit him in the back. “Ouch? Why are you hurting your senpai, Yamaguchi? That just won't do! Do you want me to tickle your feet?” 

Yamaguchi shook his head desperately. “NOHOHO! I'M SOHOHORRY!” 

Noya grinned. “Did you hear that, Shouyou? I think Yamaguchi here is hiding something on his feet! Help me out!” 

“YES!” 

“NOHOHO!” Yamaguchi laughed nervously, quickly turning on his stomach to flee away as both Noya and Hinata stopped tickling him to move lower, but perhaps since they were so tiny and Yamaguchi  was already weak from all that laughter, they caught a leg each, pinning them down with their weight. Yamaguchi shrieked, pulling at his trapped legs. “Nohoho, Nohohoya-san, Hinata! Please, listen! Lihihisten! LIHIHISTEN! NAHAHA!” 

“Noya-san, Noya-san. I think we found Yamaguchi's worst spot!” 

“Aren't we lucky, Shouyou?"

“NAHAHAT THEHEHERE, STAHAHAP!” 

Blunt nails raked up and down his socked soles. Yamaguchi howled with laughter, fists banging against the floor as he tried to crawl away from them, but damn they had him pinned good. One pair of hands skittered their nails against the ball of his foot, making him cackling like mad as the other pair found that hypersensitive spot underneath his toes that not even Yamaguchi knew was ticklish.

Tears of laughter streamed down his face and his cheeks and stomach ached a little from laughing so much, he really thought it couldn't be worst, but then he felt them pulling his socks off and when they tickled him again, he was a goner. 

“STAHAHA- HINAHAHA- AHAHAHA! PLEHEHEA!” 

Half words were the only thing he could manage out as they wrecked his poor feet. Nails scritch-scratching the sides of his feet, the arches and fingers wiggling under and in between his toes as his attackers giggled happily. He certainly had never been tickled like that before and soon his laughter had started to turn wheezy and silent. 

“Noya-san, do you think Yamaguchi had learned how to properly do this?” 

Yamaguchi wanted to scream that he did, but at that moment he could only howl with nearly hysterical laughter. 

“Hmm, I wonder, shall we ask him?” 

The tickling suddenly stopped and Yamaguchi went limp against the wooden floor. He pressed his forehead against the cool surface and let out residual laughter as he heard Nishinoya and Hinata moving up from his feet.

“So, Yamaguchi? How was it? Did you learn how to do it?” 

He couldn't talk, or more like didn't want to, he felt slightly too embarrassed, even though he didn't hate it, he was still surprised about how ticklish he really was. Who would've thought? He really made a fool of himself laughing like that, right? Ugh, he wanted to disappear!

“Ah! Ahahahah, I dihihihid! I reheheally dihihid!” He giggled brightly when they tickled his ears, fingers lightly fluttering against the sensitive spot. He shook his head before covering his ears. “I knohohow how to dohoho it! I prohohomise!” 

Hinata and Nishinoya giggled, finally stopping to let Yamaguchi catch his breath completely. 

“How was it, Yamaguchi? Did you have fun?” Hinata asked as Yamaguchi sat up, face pink but breathing more stable. 

“Yeah, doesn't it feel so good to just laugh?” Noya added, their eyes sparkling with happiness. 

They were right. It was fun and it was somehow revitalizing. He liked it and he wondered how it was that he didn't join in the fun before.

He nodded shyly, “yes, it was fun. It feels weirdly nice, I think. I had never been tickled like that before. You both are brutal,” Yamaguchi said sincerely and the three laughed. 

Ah, this was nice. It had been a long time since he had felt as light and vibrant as he did in those moments. Who knew that a ridiculous tickle war was what he needed to relax? Well, a very one sided tickle fight, if he may add, but not for long.

“What- AHAHAHAHA! N-NOHOHO!” Nishinoya’s laughter echoed through the whole room as Yamaguchi launched at him, fingers wiggling their way under the libero's arms, tickling him with enthusiasm. 

“What do you think, Noya-san?” Yamaguchi teased, pinning Noya down and straddling his hips. “Do you think I learned something at all?”

“I'LL KIHIHIHILL YOHOHOU!” 

“Let me help you!” Hinata chirped excitedly and he grabbed Noya's wrists, easily pinning his arms up above his head. 

“DON'T! SH-SHOHOUYOU!”

Yamaguchi laughed brightly as he wrecked the poor libero. He never thought tickle fights could be that fun and it was even better since he knew these two silly boys enjoyed every second of it, so he let himself have fun tickling the two and letting them tickle him back. 

Either way he could keep practicing extra hard tomorrow!

The threat in Joshua's voice was impossible to ignore. As you walked away from him in the crowded hallway, his words echoed in your head: "We wouldn't want any misunderstandings." It felt as if the walls themselves were conspiring against you. The chatter of your fellow students and the slamming of locker doors only served to amplify the sense of unease. You knew too much, and Joshua knew that you knew.

You kept your head down, trying to blend into the background as you made your way through the school day. You couldn't shake the feeling that eyes were on you, watching, assessing. Every corner you turned, you expected Joshua to be there, his unnerving smile masking the intensity of his scrutiny. It felt like the entire school was his stage, and he was pulling the strings.

At lunch, you sat with Sarah, who seemed to understand the weight of the situation. "Joshua's not someone you mess with," she said, her voice low as she picked at her food. "He's got people everywhere. You never know who's watching or listening."

"I didn't mean to get into this," you replied, trying to keep your voice steady. "I was just curious. But now..." You trailed off, not wanting to say too much in public.

Sarah nodded. "I get it. But if you're not careful, you could end up in a lot of trouble. Joshua doesn't like it when people step out of line."

As you glanced around the cafeteria, you noticed how Joshua seemed to glide from table to table, talking to different groups of students. He was laughing, shaking hands, and exchanging inside jokes. But behind that charming facade, you knew he was keeping track of everyone and everything. It was like he had a mental map of the school and could navigate it effortlessly.

After lunch, you went to your locker, trying to decide your next move. You couldn't just forget what you'd seen in that secret room, but you also couldn't risk drawing more attention to yourself. As you opened your locker, you found a small note tucked inside. It was a simple piece of paper with a single word: "Careful."

Your heart skipped a beat as you looked around. Who had put the note there? Was it a warning from Joshua or someone else? Either way, it was clear that you were being watched. You quickly stuffed the note into your pocket and closed your locker, pretending like nothing had happened.

As the school day came to an end, you decided to return to the library. You needed to understand what Joshua was hiding and why he had those dossiers on his classmates. But you knew you couldn't just walk into the secret room without being seen. You'd have to be smart about it.

You waited until the library was nearly empty, then slipped through the rows of books, keeping an eye out for anyone who might be watching. When you reached the small door leading to the hidden room, you paused, listening for any sounds. It was quiet, too quiet. You pushed the door open just enough to peer inside. The room was dark, but you could make out the outlines of the papers and documents you'd seen before.

Taking a deep breath, you stepped inside, careful not to make any noise. The room felt colder than before, and the dim lighting made it difficult to see clearly. You moved to the table where you'd found the list of names, hoping to find more clues. As you shuffled through the papers, you discovered a hidden compartment in the table. Inside was a small box, locked with a key.

Before you could examine it further, you heard footsteps approaching the library. You quickly closed the compartment and slipped out of the secret room, making your way back into the library's main area. The footsteps grew louder, and you could hear voices—Joshua's voice. He was talking to someone, and you didn't want to be caught in the library after hours.

You moved quickly but quietly, weaving through the rows of books until you reached the exit. As you stepped into the hallway, you glanced back and saw Joshua entering the library. His expression was calm, but his eyes held a hint of suspicion. You knew he was checking to see if anyone had been in the secret room. If he found out you'd been there, it would only escalate the tension.

You hurried out of the school and headed home, your mind racing with questions. What was in the locked box? Why was Joshua keeping secrets? And most importantly, what was he planning to do with all that information? You needed answers, but you also needed to stay under the radar. Joshua was clearly watching, and you didn't want to provoke him.

Over the next few days, you kept a low profile, avoiding Joshua as much as possible. You noticed that his network of loyalists seemed more active, almost as if they were on high alert. They'd watch you in class, in the hallways, even during lunch. It was like they were waiting for you to make a wrong move.

One afternoon, Sarah approached you again, her expression serious. "Joshua's been asking about you," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "He's trying to find out what you know. You need to be careful."

"I don't want any trouble," you replied, feeling the weight of the situation. "But I can't just ignore what's going on."

Sarah nodded. "I get it. But you have to be smart about this. Joshua's not someone to mess with. If he thinks you're a threat, he won't hesitate to take you down."

The days that followed were tense, with Joshua's presence looming over you like a dark cloud. You couldn't shake the feeling that he was always one step ahead, always watching. But you knew you couldn't back down. You'd seen too much, and you couldn't just pretend it never happened.

Priscilla is not included in this story. I appreciate how important she is in Elvis’ life but for the purposes of this story I will not be including her. Also, I will be referring to some of the scenes from Baz Luhrmann’ Elvis movie. This is for purposes of the storyline and for context.

You sat quietly on the sofa listening intently to Elvis as he played ‘If I Can Dream’ on the piano. His experienced fingers danced along the keys so effortlessly, producing a sound that, accompanied with his sultry southern voice could only be described as heavenly. You closed your eyes and leaned back into the luxurious beige sofa and allowed yourself to be consumed in the moment; as moments like this with Elvis were rare. He always had an entourage surrounding him, whether it be members of his Memphis Mafia or a group of excited fans wanting to meet their idol. It was not so often that you got time with Elvis completely alone, so when you did, you savoured it. When Elvis got you alone, he had a way of making you feel like the most important person; because to him, you were the most important person. He had been smitten with you since your first meeting. You smiled as you thought back to the first time you met Elvis, and how he changed your life forever.

It was 1954, in the local diner in Memphis were you waitressed. You had been serving an elderly couple a few tables over when he heard it. Your laugh. It was sweet and almost innocent sounding but it caught his attention and caused him to look your way. You were having a conversation with the couple and he observed how you held you self with gracefulness and a gentleness about you as you interacted with the elderly pair. Elvis watched as you nodded your head and smiled throughout the conversation truly engrossed in what the couple had been saying to you. He could not hear what was being said but he certainly heard the laugh that escaped your lips once more. He took in how you looked in your uniform, the pale-yellow dress with the white apron that was tied around your waist hugged your body so perfectly and cascaded down your body to sit mid-thigh. His eyes drifted back up to your face and he managed to catch a glimpse of your smile and he decided right there and then that he needed to know more about you. He kept his gaze on you until- “Hey. Hey. EP! You okay man?” George asked him, snapping him out of his trance. Elvis simply nodded and gave you one last look before joining the conversation with his friends, giving you the occasional glance.

“And I’ve loved him ever since.” The lady, whose name you had learned was Grace, told you with a bright smile as her husband whose name was Gerald reached out and took hold of her hand smiling also. You responded with a light laugh and said “I hope to have a love as pure as you both one day.” “Oh, my dear. You will. One day you will meet a man who will sweep you off your feet.” You let out a light giggle and replied “I truly hope so,” with a smile. But little did you know that man was merely a few feet away. You said goodbye to the lovely couple before returning to the counter. You passed a group of boys seated in one of the booths on your travels and called to them, “I’ll be with you in a moment.” “No worries, honey. Take your time.” One called back to you. You placed the money in the register then made your way over the to the booth, lifting your notepad from the pocket of you apron. “Hey boys, what can I get you?” One by one they told you their order until you reached the last person, he sat on the left side of the booth closet to you. He was already looking up at you when you looked at him, his eyes, the bluest you had ever seen, pulled you in instantly and he offered you a smile that caused your heart to miss a beat and butterflies appear in your stomach. “I’ll have a hamburger and fries with a cola, please sweetheart.” You nodded and wrote it down. You lifted your eyes one more time to find him still looking at you. You took a moment to really look at him. His dark hair, his lips, his slim yet muscular build; this man was the definition of perfection. You pushed a piece of your hair behind your ear and gave him a small smile before walking over to the counter. Once you got there, you let out the breath you hadn’t realised you had been holding. Who is this guy? And why does he have such an effect on me?

Once you had walked away Elvis returned his eyes to his friends, who all looked at him with smirks plastered on their faces. “What? Why y’all looking at me like that?” he questioned with knowing smirk on his lips. “You know why EP. She’s real cute by the way.” George said, wiggling his eyebrows. Elvis shook his head and looked down with a smile, “Yeah, that she is,” he muttered. “Then go talk to her, she’s right over there.” Elvis’ head snapped up to look at George then over his shoulder to see standing behind the counter. He thought for a minute before clearing his throat, stood up and ran his hand over his hair before making his way over to you. He could hear his friends not so quietly cheering him on, he shook his head and turned to face them whilst giving them a stare that silently told them stop and they did but each let out a small chuckle. Elvis turned back around made his way to you.

You took a deep breath and let it go in order to centre yourself and moved to the back of the counter to retrieve the drinks you required. You bent down to the fridge and grabbed the bottles of Cola that the boys had ordered and placed them on a tray. You turned around with the tray in hand only to see the same blue-eyed boy from before. You jumped slightly but it was enough to cause the bottles to fall, luckily the boy reached out and caught two of them and placed them back on the tray. “Sorry, there darlin. I didn’t mean to scare you.” He told you with a smirk. You blushed and said “It’s alright. I just didn’t expect you to be there. These are yours; I was just about bring them over,” and as you went to round the counter the blue-eyed boy quickly spoke, “No need honey, I got’em.” He reached over and took the bottles with a wink. You felt the heat rise in cheeks as you offered him a smile which he returned before moving his gaze from your eyes down to your chest. You followed his gaze that had landed on your name tag. He grinned as he read your name aloud, “Beautiful name for a beautiful girl.” You let out a giggle and pushed the loose piece of hair behind your ear that had fallen yet again, bringing your eyes up to look at the boy. He gave you another wink and held up the bottles “Thank you, Sweetheart,” and headed back towards the booth to his awaiting friends. “Wait!” you called and he turned back around, “You know my name, but I don’t know yours…” you spoke with a smirk as you leaned on the counter. He chuckled and bit his bottom lip looking you in the eye, and replied with a smirk “Elvis.” He didn’t give the chance to saying else as he turned and walked back to his friends. You watched as he sat the bottles on the table; sending you one more glance accompanied with a smile before taking his seat.

This would be just be the beginning of your relationship with Elvis. It started as conversations in the diner, that he became a frequent visitor too. He’d wait for you to finish your shift so that he could walk you home. You two started spending more time together and your feeling grew for each other and eventually Elvis asked you to be his girlfriend. People soon learned that you were Elvis’s and he was yours.

He met your family and you met his. Your dad being an army man, was sceptical of Elvis at first but grew to like him. You worried about meeting his mother for the first time as you knew how close Elvis was to her and how protective she was of him. Elvis assured you that you had nothing to worry about and he was right. Gladys could see how much her son adored you so she did too. You became the daughter she never had.

During this time, Elvis had also started to get noticed for his music; producing a few songs with Sun Records that became a hit on the radio and being invited to play on the Louisiana Hayride. All of this led Elvis to meeting Colonel Parker, aka The Snowman. The man offered Elvis a chance to travel in a 21-day, 20 town tour with Hank Snow with a chance play in the show. At first, Gladys was reluctant to let Elvis go, as were you but you understood that this was something Elvis really wanted to do and with a little persuasion Gladys agreed.

“I’ll call you every day.” “You promise?” “I promise, Baby.” You looked up at him with watery eyes and wrapped your arms around his neck as his wrapped his arms around your waist pulling you closer to him. You hid your face in his neck and let out a small cry. “Hey. Hey. There will be none of that, Baby.” He lifted a hand to your chin and moved your face he could look at you. His heart broke as he saw the tears falling down your face. You let out another cry and said barely audible, “I’m going to miss you so much Elvis.” He moved his fingers from your chin to your cheeks and wiped away the tears. “I’m goin’ miss you too, Honey. But I’ll be back before you know it.” He reassured you. You nodded and took a deep breath and gave him a small smile through the tears that continued to fall. He wrapped his arms back around you pulling you in until you were flush against his chest. He held on to you so tightly you though you might break, but not for a second did you want him to let go. You felt him move his head so that his lips were right next your ear and he whispered the three word that made all the heartache of his leaving vanish, “I love you.” He brought his hand up to move your hair behind you ear and whispered it again as his fingers left your hair and trailed down you neck, “I love you.” His hand rested back on your hip as you lifted your head to look into the blue eyes that you fell into that day in the diner. You stood up on your tip toes, bringing your lips inches from his but not touching and whispered, “I love you.” You saw him lick his lip, his tongue merely missing you lips as he did, “Say it again, Baby,” he said with a smirk. “I love you, Elvis Aaron Presley.” Elvis let out a light chuckle before closing the gap between you, placing his lips on yours. You had kissed Elvis many times before, but this time it was different. This kiss was full of love and passion. His grip on your waist tightened and you ran your fingers through his hair. You wanted to stay in this moment forever. However, you were both interrupted but the blast of a car horn and a shout from Scotty, “Come on EP, we gotta get goin’!” Elvis groaned as he pulled away from your lips but kept his hold on you. “I’ll see you soon, Sweetheart.” You nodded at him giving him one last kiss. He let go of you and walked towards the car and got in. You felt your heart drop as the engine started and once again the tears fell. Gladys walked over to you and took you in her arms. Elvis saw this and sent you both a smile and mouthed ‘I love you’ before the car took off, taking Elvis on the adventure that would change his life and everyone lives around him forever.

OMG, you just gave me license to be so pretentious, anon. Thank you. I will try to make this DVD commentary as entertaining and insightful as possible.

These will be very long, so I will do one per post. Let's go in chronological order.

Penelope Blossom

For clarity, I will go L-R from each row, starting at the top.

I had about 5-6 glove options, but they all came off too garish. I mostly settled on this one because of the unsettling normalcy of the backdrop. While Penelope is a gothic heroine, her type of evil lurks in the most mundane of places.

I swear I have a clear image of Penelope playing a piano. If not canon, it feels right. That was the cherry on top of this sundae. I searched far and wide for the right traumacore image with this theme. Lots of options were too specific. I am so happy I found this one, which is nearly the exact quote I searched for, and had a red theme.

I hate that I chose this, and keep kicking myself for doing two wardrobe-based pictures in the same row, though a good 45% of me thinks that their existing on the same row evokes a story, and makes it look intentional. Also, this is Dolce.

This one came up while searching for an entirely different Penelope-related picture. I think it is the first one I found. It felt like such a happy coincidence I didn't bother searching for anything similar. The shoe was already red, which really makes it seem fated that it showed up in a completely unrelated search. I love that it feels distinctly 80s. Not only is that the era of Penelope's origin story, but it shows Penelope's range. Who else can effortlessly flow from 80s pulp to gothic Victorian?

I spent at least a full hour trying to find the perfect photo of old Hollywood hair to crop. It didn't even have to be red. Nothing worked. I must have searched 10 terms. I even resorted to Google. Finally, I just searched 'hair extension' in hopes of an extreme close up. I ended up falling in love with the simplicity of this image. It really enhanced the 'fox in the snow' color palette I wanted- more on that later. I'm not thrilled with the color job (it was a warm blonde originally. I just enhanced the reds to the nth degree) but it'll do. I had to put red hair in the center because it defined her entire path. Had her genes been slightly different, the Blossoms would not have adopted her with nefarious intent.

This is as literal as it is metaphorical. On a metaphorical level, the keys reflect that she is a captor (and, within that, another metaphor- most of the captivity she causes is psychological.) The keys also serve as a literal encapsulation of the aesthetic she curated. Of course, that aesthetic also largely informs the genres of her story lines. The aesthetic also shows a deep attachment to the past. She chooses nostalgia over convenience (keys over doors that lock themselves,) but not because she enjoys reminiscing. Speaking of the past, though she is a captor now, she was a captive in the past she clings to.

Probably too on-the-nose. I debated this, then told myself any other representation of her poison plants would either be too ambiguous or not aesthetically cohesive.

I love this next to the previous picture. A two frame story. What really made me go 'JACKPOT' was the layers upon layers of Penelope's story it applies to. Firstly, it's a goblet. This is an obvious nod to G&G- the blue juice, the aesthetics of her campaign and the game as a whole, and the scene with Alice in the bathroom. It also echoes of the poison challenge she made Veronica and Betty complete. That brings me to the next element- the fact the photo is a representation of being poisoned. Due to cropping, I'm not 100% sure it comes through, but the photo is someone collapsed on the floor with a spilling goblet. It's a trope we've seen a million times. We know that poison is one of Penelope's signature weapons of choice. Through which medium? Gardening. And what is spilling out of that goblet? Rose petals. Specifically, red roses. It is as if Penelope left a kiss of death for someone as a calling card (fitting, given her former profession.) The flowers are as delicate as they are unassuming, like any good femme fatale. It also serves as a stealthy nod to The Flowers in the Attic.

This is what she wants most, is it not? In some ways, she reminds me of one scene in The Killing of a Sacred Deer (if you haven't seen it, please do,) where the antagonist tells his ambiguously deserving victim "I don't know if what is happening is fair, but it's the only thing I can think of that's close to justice." Penelope, pathologically stuck on the past, can only focus on vengeance. It is not fair that she suffered, so she must make others suffer. There is no changing the past, so the people who caused her suffering must pay for it. However, Penelope is lawful evil. She does not act out of apathy or a pure love for depravity. She has a code. See: the challenges she forced the core four to do. If Penelope wanted to, she had ample opportunity to simply murder them. She didn't need to provide an antidote for the poison at the end of the game, either, but Penelope has a love for the game. While you could (and maybe should) argue this is also plot armor in action, I think it shows that Penelope has some sort of internal moral code that informs her villainous logic. Sure, Hal died, but that's because someone had to pay... and Hal committed the worse sin of all: failing to deliver what Penelope needed of him. So, yes, there is some 'honor' in her evil... but, more importantly, honor is what she hopes to achieve through the vengeance. Who will give a little orphan girl the honor she deserved? Nobody did, so she must retroactively honor that girl's suffering with revenge.

Miscellaneous/broad notes now! The second I was tasked with doing a Penelope mood board, I had an immediate color scheme in mind. I wanted a pale, fiery, striking palette that still had a dark gothic feel. Looking back, I wish I toyed with it more, but I stayed true to the image of greys, whites and reds cloaked in darkness.

I also immediately knew at least 4 of the 9 image concepts I wanted. All of the mood boards were difficult for their own reasons- for Penelope, it was narrowing down options, which is a good problem, all things considered.

I decided very early on that I wanted my mood boards to be a psychological study. They must treat every delusion as reality, because they are firmly grounded in the subjects' mind set and self image. For instance, I would not put something like 'shut up you smarmy bastard' on a Bret board. That is exterior perception. I would love to do more broad mood boards later on, where I tackle the character design, including fan reception and/or in-universe reception to the character, but I nixed that for my first round of mood boards. Instead, I told myself I need to tap into every ounce of empathy in my body and tell the story Penelope tells herself. Some things, like the set of keys, do double as an Easter egg of sorts. They apply to Penelope as both a victim and a perpetrator, but I don't think that is something Penelope is exceptionally ignorant to (see: Alice Cooper.)

I originally wanted an extreme close-up of baroque applique detailing as homage to her fashion sense (baroque, Victorian, the occasional military and circus reference.) I have no real reason for nixing this, but it was one of the first images I knew I wanted.

The reason I went with Penelope for my first mood board was: I got an ask requesting a mood board, but didn't want to decide who its subject would be. I went into the Riverdale chat and said "name a character." The first response was @serialkillerbettycooper saying Penelope. One of the intriguing early replies was Caramel the Cat, which I am high key considering.

Priscilla- a movie review by Lauren Avila

Curiosity is a strong emotion. As the saying goes, curiosity killed the cat. Who knows what drew the metaphoric cat to its demise, perhaps an irresistible scent, the thrill of the hunt, something shiny… one may never know. For me, it was the new Elvis Presley movie that just hit theaters. Of course, the online world seems to forget that it is in fact not the newest Elvis movie but rather, a movie about his seemingly controversial ex-wife, Pricilla. This movie made headlines long before its Venice Film Festival world premiere. When the news that Jacob Elordi, of “Euphoria” fame, was cast as Elvis Presley the internet was let loose conveniently at the start of the 2022 award season. The production of this film came right on the heels of Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis,” which skyrocketed its star, Austin Butler. to Hollywood’s A-list status with accompanying award nominations. Even in spite of the inevitable comparison battle, this movie has built-in hostility that it's up against. “Priscilla” is based on Priscilla Presley’s often refuted memoir, “Elvis and Me.” The book, co-written by Sandra Harmon, unveiled many shocking anecdotes pertaining to the person Elvis was behind closed doors. However, Priscilla has retracted or altered stories over the years since its release. It has also recently been revealed that prior to her unexpected passing, Elvis and Priscilla’s daughter, the late Lisa Marie, was adamantly against the making of this film because she anticipated that it would portray her father unfairly. So with all this in mind, how did the film turn out? Read ahead for my honest thoughts.

***SPOILER WARNING- the following review contains spoilers about the book and movie***

“Priscilla” opens with a noticeable reminder that Elvis Presley Enterprises did not allow his catalog of music to be used. Frankie Avalon’s “Venus” is played soon into the film to set the decade. Its instrumental is also reprised later. Other songs used throughout the movie suited the story and era in a sufficient way as to make one forget that one hasn’t heard a single Elvis song in a movie about Elvis. Well, except for one but more on that later. What else is obvious is how the budget of the director, Sofia Coppola, was used. The film, from color schemes to costumes to sets to performances, is understated and utilizes soft tones that remain throughout. I felt like the entire movie came across as a motion picture with the glitzy-Hollywood filter removed. It looked and felt very realistic, coming from a personal standpoint. Cailee Spaeny, who plays the title character, effortlessly conveys Priscilla’s youth and innocence. She is soft-spoken, apprehensive, and obedient to any and all. While based on truth, I believe that the height difference between Jacob and Cailee was really emphasized in the movie to serve as a visual symbol of the relationship. Jacob’s Elvis completely towers over Cailee’s Pricilla, which Coppola highlights often. Only minutes into the film, the audience is introduced to Jacob’s Elvis, an impressive blend of voice and mannerisms very reminiscent of the genuine article. 

The film stays very faithful to the book, bringing to life many key stories that built up and brought down Elvis and Priscilla’s union. As a whole, I felt the movie used a first-person perspective just as the book did. We, as an audience, experience the butterflies and excitement of puppy love, then the intimacy and bliss of real love, and finally the heartbreak and sadness of lost love. The film clearly shifts in acts, using pacing as a tool. The beginning is slow and steady, then the middle heats up in a whirlwind before finally coming to an abrupt end. 

While I think “Priscilla” serves as an entertaining adaptation of “Elvis and Me,” I’m not sure it acts as anything else. It didn’t bring anything new, which perhaps was its goal? If it was only made to tell a story of a girl entering an unsustainable relationship that was always a fantasy, then it did so. Now please don’t misunderstand me. There’s nothing wrong with sharing a cautionary tale of what happens when your “dreams” come true or even an angsty fairy tale. However, I feel that something was missing. This is a unique, once-in-a-lifetime love story that could have been explored a little deeper. Elvis and Priscilla had a very complex relationship that changed both of them in life and death. There’s a reason why the real Priscilla still keeps the memory of her dead ex-husband alive but a “Priscilla” audience is left wondering why. 

Nevertheless, the performances really sold this film! If I’m being honest, I feel that Jacob will be the one people leave this movie talking about. However, Cailee is not to be missed. Priscilla navigated through an unstable, unpredictable, and unbelievable life that no one could have prepared her for. Cailee brings a remarkable blend of strength and vulnerability that makes Priscilla rootable. She faces challenges but continues to be capable of surviving them over and over. 

In some ways, I think Jacob had the easier job because all he had to do was play Elvis Presley.

Not only did Jacob have to take on the role of arguably the most recognized person in history but he had to do it following Austin Butler’s highly praised performance. He had to master the  voice, the looks, and the nuances of an extremely popular yet surprisingly mysterious icon. It should’ve been impossible but I must give credit where it's due: he did it. To be fair, I think it helps that I had never seen Jacob do anything else. You may form a different opinion if you’re used to him as an Australian actor or as his characters in “The Kissing Booth” or “Euphoria.” However, I really believed him as Elvis. His physical profile is very similar which hardly needs help but I have to admit that his voice work was right on point. He’s charming, which makes it so easy to understand why Pricilla falls for him but he’s also a bit dangerous like a ticking time bomb. As the audience, you never know what to expect from him. Jacob’s Elvis is a mix of bad boy and Prince Charming, with a little druggie twist. Elvis’s drug use is highlighted so much that it begs the question: are we seeing the real Elvis or the product of medicinal influence?

Even with Cailee and Jacob succeeding in their roles individually, this movie would’ve failed if they didn’t share chemistry. Anywhere from the kissing to the yelling, these two nailed their chemistry. I believed they were in love through every stage of it. Their standout to me was the sequence when they locked themselves in their bedroom after Priscilla’s high school graduation. Cailee and Jacob sold the sizzling hot chemistry together then brilliantly crashed through the complicated emotions of two emotionally-unstable individuals in the span of less than five minutes. There are several times where emotions run high such as when Elvis throws a chair in frustration after Priscilla dislikes a song he likes, or when Elvis threatens to send Priscilla away after she accuses him of cheating, or when Elvis tries to force himself on her in Las Vegas. He threatens, manipulates, lies, and withdraws so many times that it comes somewhat as a shock when Priscilla finally decides that she’s had enough.

My biggest problem with the movie is the ways in which it did stray from the book. Granted, it was not often but when it did, it was noticeable. There were details that if not spelled out for an audience they would not understand or plot holes that they would have to fill in themselves. Book readers would recognize what happened and why, while an unknowing audience would have to assume. For example, Priscilla explained multiple times how difficult it was to maintain a closeness with Elvis when she was competing with the Memphis Mafia, Colonel Tom Parker, Vernon Presley, Larry Geller, Hollywood and its stars, and his fans for his attention. I don’t think this is stressed enough in the film. Priscilla certainly goes through her lonely times, that comes across plainly, but Elvis appears accessible when they are together. A major part of why Priscilla decides to leave in the book is because they drift too far apart, yet this appears very suddenly in the movie. The movie version of Priscilla hardly shows a concern about Elvis’s decline in physical and emotional well being but the book version noticed the changes over time. I feel these are only a few aspects that would’ve been important to incorporate. 

I also have to note a few surprises I was not expecting. There was an Elvis song featured. They managed to get “Guitar Man,” notably featured in Elvis’ 1968 Comeback Special, into this movie. Jacob “performed” as Elvis a few times in the film, including candidly playing the piano for his friends at a party and wiggling on the Vegas stage. This movie also used Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You” as part of the emotional ending scene. Fans may know that Elvis wanted to record this song but Dolly wouldn’t sell her rights to it. It is massively appropriate that this is the song that is used as Priscilla resumes her independence but takes a lifelong love for Elvis with her as she leaves. The song also has special meaning because in reality, Elvis sang it to Priscilla at the end of their marriage. Most importantly, the lyrics apply in such a way that is truly touching, tragic, and beautiful. It was a perfectly poignant way to end the movie and one of my absolute favorite decisions they made. I was sobbing at that choice. 

With all the weight that this film is carrying around, it is easy to form an opinion before even sitting down to watch it. I truly expected open season on Elvis, his reputation, and his career, but I think the film told a story in a way that did not outrageously force an opinion on its audience. Sure, it leaned a certain direction but ultimately how you choose to analyze the relationship is in your control. As an Elvis fan, I don’t know if I would recommend this film to diehards. I suppose I could best caution you by saying that this film shows the reasons we (and Priscilla) fell in love with him but it also shows why she ultimately left him too. Suffice to say, you must make the decision of watching “Priscilla” with that in mind. Jacob commented in an interview that Luhrmann’s “Elvis” and Coppola’s “Priscilla” would make a good double feature and I must say that I agree with him. Finally, it is important to remember that there is nothing wrong with liking both because they are two very different stories told in two very different ways. 

I almost forgot to mention that I want to give a huge shout out to the props department because there was ample screen time, including literal prop montages, to feature classic Elvis memorabilia such as magazines, records, photographs, etc. The attention to detail was fantastic! Well done, props department!

Moon Knight - "what's an avatar to a god?" - Ask game, prompt 14 PART 2

I couldn’t kill, I couldn’t be controlled by a big bird for however the hell long, I am majorly out of shape, I’m just… not worth anything, am I?" or, Y/N becomes Khonshu's avatar, and feels worthless after failling a mission and having to be saved after being attacked. I can’t do this.

My boys would reassure me, telling me that we could find a way out. “After all,” Marc said, “there was not a time limit to the minimum amount of time you have to serve Khonshu for”.  Which also meant the opposite was true, I could be serving him for up to for however long they did, maybe longer, maybe years longer, maybe I’d just be stuck like this for the rest of my-

“You alright, love?” Steven asks, taking me out of my train of thoughts.

“Yeah-!” I say, putting on my best smile, but it doesn’t look like he believes me.

“You know you can tell me anything, right?” He gives a light smile and pulls me into a hug. I give a short ‘mhm’ and he’s happy.

Truth is, I can’t get that night off my mind.. it was around a week ago now. The woman who ‘attacked’ me, didn’t mean to, she was drunk. Jealous that her boyfriend was looking at me at the store. And you know, it’s fine, it’s fine.

It’s been a week, two days, three hours, and about twenty-one minutes. Yes, I’ve counted.

I’m not home much anymore. Khonshu gave me his first mission a couple days ago. I’ve been learning the ropes, and in all honesty; failing miserably. I’ve let several people get away, and haven’t had the heart to kill yet. “It’s pathetic of me,” Khonshu told me.

I arrive home in the suit. Tired, but not questioning the loneliness of the boys’ apartment. I figured they’d be asleep, but they must be out, doing… something.

I collapse into a chair, and the suit takes itself off. Now I’m just left with my thoughts.

I still couldn’t do this.  

I couldn’t possibly be an avatar. I couldn’t kill, I couldn’t be controlled by a big bird for however the hell long, I am majorly out of shape, I’m just… not worth anything, am I?

My thoughts scatter as I hear keys rustling outside the front door, and I panic.  I run over and get in bed, wiggling myself under the covers and pretending to sleep..

One of the boys opens the door and steps in, there’s no sounds for a moment, then he gently closes the door. The floor creaks as he walks around, he sighs, “Y/N will be gone by the morning, won’t they..?”

And I lose it. I start to bawl.  “Oh, oh no, love…” I don’t even realize it’s Steven, but he steps over to my side of the bed and picks me up effortlessly, sitting me right in his arms, I hug him tight.

“I’m so sorry angel, y-you’re just never home-! I missed you so much…”

“I c-can’t… I can’t do this-! The stress! The–“

“I know..” Steven sighs, “we know.”

He turns to look in the mirror we had put in the corner of the room, “that damn bird is a real bloody bastard,” he starts to sound more angry with every word, “and I wish I could just fix everything instead of you havin’ to do this all alone-!”

“I just feel so… useless”  I admit.

“W-what? Why do you feel like that, love?”

“I can’t even complete a mission the fucking chicken gives me-! I can’t even kill. Frankly I just feel like- like…” I can’t say that to them.

“Like?”

I say it in a really faint whisper, “like I don’t deserve you anymore.” but he still hears me. Steven looks toward me, taking one hand from my waist to my face, cupping it in his hand.

“I’m the one not good enough here, Y/N. I couldn’t protect you when you needed me the most,” I see the shift in his eyes, the unease in admitting something like this to each other.

“Hey Marc..” I say.

He chuckles, “I.. uh,” sighing, holding me closer, and putting his head on my shoulder, “I’m sorry, baby.”

Me sobbing slows, and I look at him. “I love you, all of you.” I say, smiling for the what feels like the first time in ages.

He pauses for a moment, an almost scared look flashes across his eyes, then he says  “..I love you too, but, you gotta trust us. Let us help.”

“Only if you’ll let me help when you guys need it, too.”

Marc sighs, but puts his hand out in front of me, “Deal. Shake on it?”

Instead of acting like a normal person, I shake my body in his arms, which at least gets a chuckle out of him. I shake his hand. “Deal.”

The fear doesn’t go away, it never does, but we work, try, and try again.  We surprisingly work out a deal with Khonshu, he lets me go, with one condition..

“What.” Marc says, utterly dumbfounded, “He wouldn’t–“

“He would- or, is, I guess. Trust me, if I thought this was some sort of trick, I would’ve already said no.” I mention, and Marc is silent. “Baby, it’s alright” I say, suspecting he’s overthinking again.

“It’s a little too sappy, even for him.” he begins, “But.. if that’s it, and you’ll actually be free, it’s worth it. I mean… only if you’re okay with it—” I step over to kiss him.

“Of course, and I’m okay with it, baby… are you?” I ask, almost wondering if this wasn’t Khonshu’s condition, if we’d do it anyway someday.

“Yeah, I am.”

And with that, we head to the courthouse. And with a god as our witness, we get married, and I am free.

giving dungeon meshi the second highest honor i can bestow to it: complaining about it (its ending specifically):

anyways the ending felt super rushed to me, almost like the author hadnt realized how long an ending with a cast this expansive would need to be, and ended up pacing it weirdly while also rushing some parts along the way. also these opinions of mine dont take into account any post-canon supplemental material, im judging the canon ending on an as-it-is basis, so maybe some of my gripes here get better explained in a bonus comic, but im not counting any of that rn. maybe later i will look back at this ending and feel better about it, but these are the impressions this ending had left on me as of now:

- laios becoming king makes sense when u consider the prophecy that this entire series prefaced itself with (the one who defeats the mad sorcerer will inherit the golden kingdom), but like.... it still feels somewhat out of place. its not a choice that i hate entirely, but i feel like the pacing towards this decision felt very off, when, in the ending to a series like this, shouldve felt more inevitable/final. it really did feel like there were numerous other options laios couldve taken on in the ending.

^these all felt like plausible outcomes to me

and while its somewhat logically explained that the only reasonable outcome for laios was for him to become king (cant leave the island to the long lived races and needs to take responsibility for.. saving the world?), this rationale for laios becoming king felt lacking in any emotional drama that i personally think this series' ending should have, especially considering that the events during the final climax just before this were extremely satisfyingly dramatic.

- izutsumi.... i can recognize that rui did her best to integrate her into the story and serve a narrative significance (barometz chapter succubi arc etc), and this did succeed to an extent, but it also felt like a case of too little too late.. the early arcs before izutsumi had very excellent pacing, with different chapters rotating its focus on a different party member effortlessly. it was during this time that the foundations of our main characters were really set up. izutsumi's late arrival meant that her character narrative had to squeeze itself between the other main characters' further developing narratives, alongside with the steadily developing climax, which had a whole other share of new character narratives it needed to develop (mithrun kabru thistle etc). this lack of breathing room for izutsumi made her feel kinda out of place in the overall narrative, when she, as a main party member, shouldve had more solid ground.

like for example, her yaad doll was barely mentioned until it was time to serve its narrative role (leading them out of the dungeon). looking back at the story, the doll was mentioned at least one other time besides its introduction and its narrative role:

but this happens during an extremely dramatic moment (marcille is losing her fucking shit) and this yaad doll mention ends up being overshadowed by it. i feel like the story shouldve called more attention to it; it's role as the plot key that lets the party safely escape the collapsing dungeon is a big role after all, and it shouldve been mentioned at a degree similar to shuro's bell or kensuke, two other objects that play a big role in the story's ending. but as ive said, izutsumi's character has to struggle to secure a spot with the various other rapidly developing narratives. this failure to cement izutsumi's bond with the yaad doll then had this important moment fall rather flat for me;

just like many other izutsumi moments that were meant to be emotional. izutsumi's character sadly didnt have enough time to stew and leave the bigger mark that she really should have, imo

- speaking of characters who didnt feel super impactful in the ending, i was disappointed that chilchuck and senshi didnt play bigger roles in the final climax. i think they played a significant role while marcille was the dungeon lord, but after that (while laios was the dungeon lord) they didnt really do much.. i wish we saw them do more when laios had turned into a monster, the way we see marcille lead the chase after demon-laios.

- also! why did the citizens of the golden land survive??? im so confused about that. like when i think about it i.. guess????? it makes sense?? bc they were cursed by thistle to remain in the dungeon otherwise they would turn to dust, but when thistle lost his desires, that curse was lifted, and they could return to the surface... i think??? but see, thats my problem w this, to make sense of this im doing a lot of guesswork, and something this significant shouldnt be left up to guesswork. i dont expect a story to explain every single detail about itself, especially with its ending; in fact some of my favorite endings are ones that leave certain details ambiguous, but this is an instance where there really should be some sort of explanation.. and the same can be said for why tf did thistle die! if he even died that is???? like man, so much is left up in the air, and the only really concrete things that happened are 1.) laios becomes king, and 2.) falin is resurrected. but my biggest gripe, the biggest thing imo that is not thoroughly explained when i really feel that it should be explained is....

- CAN PEOPLE JUST BE RESURRECTED NOW???????????? like marcille just spelt it out for us that they needed to learn to accept death, especially after spending such a long time in a dungeon where death is merely a suggestion, and yet.... falin was able to be resurrected outside of the dungeon?? does this mean Anyone can be resurrected outside of the dungeon, since the lines between a dungeon and the surface world have now been broken???? that cant be right, can it....??? didnt we just have 97 chapters of why People Should Not Live Forever And Need Food (taking the lives of other creatures) To Be Considered Alive? but how was falin able to be resurrected then??? 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫 again, this is guesswork that I REALLY THINK should not have just been left to guesswork, man........ tho i do have an alternate explanation that kinda explains how she was able to survive, and ill hopefully post that at some point..

I love the guitars, the looks everyone is serving, the funky little twist in the song structure after the second verse, plus thinking always about lovemelovemelovemetellmetellmetellme + the chains + kihyun with a literal goddamn whip + the gunshot sound effects punctuating joohoney's verse. chefs kiss

2. Taemin - "Guilty"

god taemin is back and you can just feel the catholicity through the screen. the haunting vocals. the delicious string textures throughout (the way the arpeggios shift to pizzicato for the second verse!). the 6/4 time (the only choreo I learned this year that was not to an 8 count). the fucking through the shirt grab. the bridge which they extended in the MV specifically to squeeze in Even More Yearning™.

this is a perfect cb and I will say the rest of the album is also flawless and my favorite out of this list. honestly this probably would have been first if not for the fact that I personally just liked beautiful liar so goddamn much. thank you taemin. no notes.

3. SHINee - "HARD"

aka the song I previously described as "2 baddies, but Good" (no really, they have same key signature & near identical song structure. listen to them side by side with HARD on .95 speed if you don't believe me)

anyway, like 2 baddies this is SM-flavored af but I love the old school hip-hop vibes in HARD soooo much. I've had some people tell me they found it weird and off-putting but to me it's effortlessly cool but also earnest and just. fun? (not only the music but also the visuals? hello? the fashions in this MV) def gotta be one of my most played this year

4. Lee Gi Kwang - "Predator"

ok now for a dark horse pick. I feel like in the borderline 5th gen landscape nowadays older groups are often forgotten (even though hello! 2nd gen bgs are back from the military now and are having a Moment) so people perhaps understandably overlooked this one but god this song is a bop.

is it just criminal by taemin part 2 but less sexy and with a lower budget? yes. but the song is an absolute bop and the choreo slaps in its own right so imo it's a very worthy homage especially given it captures its exact gender of "pathetic sadboy making horny mistakes and needing to dance abt it" so so perfectly,

5. Exo - "Cream Soda"

tbh not what I was expecting from an exo comeback and I was surprised that I ended up liking this so much given I didn't really care for the prerelease tracks, but the more I listened the more this grew on me?

ofc it's an exo track so the vocals are 100 emoji but the chorus and melodies are simply addictive and the choreo for this one is also just a ton of fun (the sexy little head swipe,)

also I love the outfits in this MV (everyone keeps saying this is the Weed aesthetic but honestly? with korea's whole Thing? this is exo's macklemore-style thrift shopping and/or raiding grandma's attic for hidden midcentury treasures phase. to me.) but thank u @ the universe specifically for giving us back silver haired baekhyun. bless.

6. VIXX - "Amnesia"

another underrated release tbh! this initially gave me guilty vibes w/ the abundant use of pizzes since they were released around the same time but I also just independently love this song

I feel like it's a very mature song that takes itself seriously but not in an overly self-absorbed or cheesy way (another comparison I might make is to leo's losing game from last year), the chorus is poignant and hits hard because it's so earnest—maybe especially so since they were down to 3 with this cb—but man that melody is just so gorgeous, like it haunts me

7. Dreamcatcher - "Bon Voyage"

ok if I'm gonna be real it wasn't a great year for my faves—while I liked OOTD and reason they weren't top 10 worthy for me, mx had 1 excellent release before having most of its members yoinked by the military, and I didn't love either of oneus's cbs this year

that being said! I did still like bon voyage! while I preferred the first 2 in the trilogy it still felt like a good and fitting finale, bittersweet and full of equal parts regret and hope

in many ways it feels like a harkening back to classic dreamcatcher with the Big Anime Opening Vibes™ but more somber and grown up, an unexpected summer anthem from these queens,

8. TXT - "Sugar Rush Ride"

it's been a busy year for txt and while I'm not super familiar with them and their releases are sometimes a bit hit or miss for me, when they do hit they HIT

I actually considered chasing that feeling for this list too but despite adoring the take on me-ness of it I ended up nixing it after adjusting for recency bias

sugar rush ride though, I feel is a bop that stood the test of time with its catchiness and surprisingly dark undertones, and is also one of my favorite choreos I learned this year by far like. come on. it's the epitome of Boy Group Hot.

9. Taeyang - "Vibe"

this song lived rent-free in my head for MONTHS, god it's so catchy

I actually missed when my local studio taught this song but I liked the choreo so much I learned it on my own which, predictably since it literally features 2 main dancers, was not easy but extremely worth it bc just like the song itself it's just really fun

other than that what can I say. the MV is nothing special but otherwise it's just a really solid song with Big feel good energy.

10. Kiss of Life - "Shhh"

ok,,,,,,,I don't really follow rookie groups that closely bc generally I don't feel like I'm the target audience but. out of this year's new groups I did especially like kiss of life's debut!

the MV doesn't do much for me tbh but musically it sounds uncharacteristically mature to me, in a good way—it has a subtle confidence about it that I like plus excellent vocals, and is (possibly hot take?) what I was hoping to get from newjeans this year as a continuation of their debut last year tbh

Jungkook - "Standing Next to You"

this one just felt like cheating bc it's technically an English single and there's probably some recency bias here but I can't not mention it bc I simply love this track. I'm not even a BTS stan but it's just a jam with great vocals and instrumentals (the big band notes and MJ influence! please!) and the choreo is also SO ridiculously fun, both the chorus and the dance break

BTOB - "Wind and Wish"

this is just a wholesome song that makes you feel good, like is it a lil bit cheesy? yeah, but it's also Good Vibes Comma the Song, wearing its entire heart on its sleeve in the most endearing way. it's nostalgic and mellow and full of love for its friends and a zest for life

also special shoutout to the bridge, which in such an otherwise lowkey song did not have to go that hard and yet it Did?? that harmony gives me chills, 100% certified vocal kings would cry again

Shownu X Hyungwon - "Love Me a Little"

this is a pathetic meow meow song in the best possible way and was sadly beat out by the other slightly better pathetic meow meow songs on this list (guilty, predator, amnesia) bc it was just a really good year for them but I still think it deserves a mention bc first of all yea boi @ my mans shownu being free from the military but also the instrumental/dance break at the end is dark as hell and also SO fucking tasty

Infinite - "New Emotions"

another 2nd gen group that quietly had a renaissance this year! this song is simply a bop and while the song itself is not as memorable as some in the top 10 the choreo is actually really fun

also myungsoo looks really ridiculously fine as center in the first chorus and that's the last thing I have to say about this song,
