Honestly I was considering nostalgia as an aspect of popularity. Like I was considering Ohshc and utena in what I thought of as a popular anime even though it’s not really mainstream now. That’s why I don’t think it’s fair to exclude popular anime (whether it is because of current popularity or bc we loved it a decade ago.) bc it’s kind of subjective in a way. I was never going to bar any anime from the competition like that was never something I considered.

I don’t think voting for something because you’re nostalgic about it is a bad thing, as long as you’re separating the ed from the anime. I’m extremely nostalgic for “I’m alive” as an ending I still listen to it very often, even though I honestly kind of hate black butler now. And I’ve seen a few times people voting /against/ an ending just because they think the anime is trash. This isn’t about the anime. But when some people are only talking about the anime and don’t mention the ed you can’t blame me for thinking it’s definitely a factor in how some people are voting.

I never said LOTS of eds won bc they were popular. I only said I was squinting at some. Most of them I can see why they won. Like I literally said that I don’t know how much of it is popularity (including nostalgia) and how much of it is because people watched the videos. Like good on you for actually watching all the videos and stuff. thank you, you’re the kind of voter I really appreciate. but you are one data point and it says nothing about what other people do.

And sorry if you want to know which ones I’m talking about (and there are like. Only a couple I can think of rn btw) dm me I don’t want to make it sound like I’m attacking people who voted for endings that /I personally/ don’t think should have won. Obviously I have my own opinions like anyone else but I’m not going to risk accidentally sounding bitter at people on the poll blog bc I feel like that would be rude as a poll runner. And there’s no way to make a tournament completely unbiased.

(Also I should have been more clear about this last night but when I said some of the results are kinda sus that was actually partly on me bc the more I’m thinking about it the more I think the polls should be a week long even tho I don’t really like week long polls. Just bc the sample size was kinda small for some of them you know? Maybe for like suuuuper popular tourneys day long polls would be fine, but for everyone else a week might be better. And in the first day of polls I’ve noticed that it’s very easy for the results to flip even if it looks like there’s a very big difference in votes, depending on who reblogs the polls and when, that kinda stuff)

It's so sad to see so many good endings from more obscure series go down to more ones from more popular ones, especially when it's clear people didn't even bother to listen to the more obscure one... someone should run an OP/ED tournament where all the Big Shonen Anime are automatically disqualified.

lowkey agree. Some of these results have been kind of -_- . Sus. Like I’m not gonna elaborate bc I’m the poll runner and I feel like I should be Professional(tm) on this blog and I’m not saying every ending that won which was from a big anime won bc the anime was popular. There are many mainstream anime that have endings that absolutely deserve to go far. Some of the popular winners I agree with and some I might have chosen differently but I get why they won, even when taking the anime itself out of the equation. And then there are some that I’m like. This absolutely only won bc it was popular. I just have no way of knowing how much of the results are because of the anime and how much is because of the music/video. But I’m also fully aware that endings from big anime have an unfair advantage over those from smaller anime I just don’t have a way to stop people from voting for their fave/familiar anime instead of the ED itself. Except for automatically disqualifying popular anime but I wouldn’t want to do that bc some of my personal favorite EDs are from popular anime and also I wouldn’t know how to determine the cutoff between Big and small anime. Also considering my biased perception of what is popular or not based on the tumblr circles I’m in. Make a cut off based on Viewership I guess?

my main dilemma right now is deciding if I should continue making the polls 1 day long or if I should make them a week long. Like I feel like a week is objectively the better choice but I’m just so impatient and like things to be streamlined. Like I’m gonna get bored if I have wait so long and stressed out over polls that are in limbo for so long (I have neuroses ok don’t look at me -_-) but it’s also more time to watch the videos and get a larger sample size would work better maybe?
