here's a smol bit of my roll-a-trope fic that i FINALLY started tonight rip

“Sorry, is this for sale?” You turn to the elderly man poised in his chair, newspaper in one hand and teacup in the other, and point to the machine.

“That old thing? You don’t want that, dear.”

“But… is it for sale?”

He pauses, staring off between his cup and paper before flicking his eyes between you and the machine on the floor. With a trembling hand, he places down his cup and pulls himself up. You offer to help as he crouches to the floor to move the machine onto the table, but he turns you down with a firm shake of his head.

“You’re determined, aren't you? I… suppose it is for sale.”

“How much?”

“You will mind the note, yes? Please, dear, assure me you won’t reverse this handwheel.” He covers your hand with his, and you turn to face him — his calm demeanour turned to nerves, now visible in his eyes.

“What happens if… if you turn it back?”

“I’m not one for superstition, but i’ve heard bad things, dear. My memory is… not what it used to be, so I cant recall the details, but I just know that nothing good has ever come from it. Please. Tell me you won’t turn it back.”

“I won’t.” You nod and he still seems unconvinced. “I won’t, promise.”
