Mini-Review: Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions!
I’m so glad @littlestartopaz recommended this to me, because it was SO GOOD.
Yuta wants to start high school afresh: new school far from home, new classmates who don’t know he spent middle school acting out the fantasy of being the mysterious and magic “Dark Flame Master,” new him. But one of his classmates has delusions of her own, and after she accidentally discovers his embarrassing past, Yuta is unwillingly drawn into her life and a growing circle of friends with their own quirks.
The “chunibyo” of the title basically means “8th grade syndrome;” a phase in middle school where some kids inhabit and act out their own fantasy stories, positing themselves as dark magicians, magical girls, and other wielders of magical powers.
I had avoided this for a while, until it was specifically recommended to me, because honestly, it sounds embarrassing, right? It sounds like it’s gonna be an embarrassing manic pixie dream girl scenario. But what it actually contains is the story of how a mixed bag of students--some actively chunibyo, others not--become friends and develop very endearing close relationships, while arguing and frustrating each other because that’s what friends do.
Now, the idea of being the star of what’s essentially your own fantasy-action anime is embarrassing, but what’s notable is that the show doesn’t really hold the chunibyo characters up for mockery. Sure we might laugh at them, but hey--it’s funny to watch friends be silly together. And most viewers, just like some of the characters who have moved on from their chunibyo phases, probably easily understand the mix of soul-wrenching embarrassment and (mild?) fond sentiment that comes with remembering our middle school selves.
But let’s be real: the reactions the two former chunibyo students, Yuta and Shinka have to being reminded of middle school, are #RELATABLE
Rikka, our title chunibyo, in particular uses her fantasy in part to cope with grief, coming from an extended family that (without getting spoilery) didn’t help a young girl to deal with a very hard and life-changing time. Now that she’s in high school, her older sister blackmails Yuta (using an a voice recording of one of his chunibyo speeches) into helping deal with Rikka and things (like the cat she wants to adopt) that pop up.
One thing the show is very good at, though, is not making a single thing the reason behind a character’s chunibyo. One may have started their fantasy inspired by another person, or prompted by an event, but it’s also (while active) part of their personal narrative that influences how they spent their free time, how they see the world and keep blogs or diaries, etc.
But at the same time, they’re still teenagers, and their inner view of themselves...doesn’t always translate skills.
I said the show is primarily about friendship. A lot of that friendship is between Yuta and Rikka, but they accumulate a little group, mainly through Rikka’s attempt to start a magic club. Recruit 1: Kumin, a polite, quiet senpai with no chunibyo history or aspirations.
Kumin starts off seeming like a background character, but by the second season it’s clear she’s not just there for jokes about how she’ll take a nap anywhere. She’s perceptive, and genuinely enjoys watching the others act out their scenarios.
Compared to the other characters who are boisterous in their chunibyo activities (Rikka, Deko, Satone), or vociferously trying not to get drawn in to chunibyo activities (Yuta, Shinka), Kumin is happy to watch and offer encouragement, but she’s also willing to participate if a chunibyo scenario calls for a group.
Incidentally, the show does a really interesting thing where occasionally, we’ll be drawn “inside” the chunibyo world, seeing what Rikka/Deko/whoever see: a fantasy land, big magical weapons, anime-grade magical attacks. Occasionally we’ll also see what this “really” looks like--a couple people running around waving umbrellas at each other--but often we only get the fantasy version. It’s clear that Rikka and co. are legitimately on some level engaging in a shared imagination, and the times when a reluctant character (particularly Yuta or Shinka) willing steps in to the shared illusion are genuinely sweet.
Speaking of, Shinka (aka Morisummer) became one of my favorite characters. Like Yuta, she was chunibyo (”Morisummer the magician”); like Yuta, she chose a high school where she didn’t know anyone expressly so she could reinvent herself as a normal teen. And like Yuta, she’s getting dragged kicking and screaming into chunibyo again.
It would’ve been so easy to make her a bad character. She’s pretty, puts a lot of effort into being popular and likable at school, trying to keep up a good teen girl image, despite being fairly sarcastic at her core. And as loathe as she is to admit it, she likes her friends (even if she won’t admit they’re friends, even if half of them are actively chunibyo, even if she says she’s only hanging around so she can make sure all traces of chunibyo-Morisummer are erased from the internet).
Shinka gets drawn in to the group through Rikka’s apparently only pre-existing friend: Deko, a fellow chunibyo who follows Rikka (or “Eye of the Wicked Lord Shingan”) as her master, and is extremely devoted to the great magician Morisummer. So devoted, in fact, that she has several physical copies of Morisummer’s book containing all her wisdom...aka Shinka-Morisummer’s blog, which Shinka has tried to erase all trace of.
Needless to say, the two don’t seem to get along great.
Deko’s dedication to chunibyo and Morisummer irks Shinka; Shinka’s claim to be Morisummer irks Deko, who refuses to believe the great magician could ever be this sarcastic, mundane girl. Deko’s refusal irks Shinka, bringing out the sarcasm and bluntness Shinka tries to hide from the school at large.
Obviously, they actually become close friends, but heaven help you if you actually say so.
The entire series is an exploration of relationships, and Yuta’s developing closeness with Rikka (hey, we knew it was going to happen) is also sweet. He’s a genuinely likable boy, embarrassed by the vestiges of his former self he sees in Rikka, but often willing to meet her on her level, and both of them also learn/reaffirm the importance of doing things their way, and keeping both of them comfortable, rather than acting a certain way or performing specific acts just because their classmates think their relationship status mandates it.
Speaking of classmates--and I know this is getting long but I CAN’T HELP IT, I LIKED SO MANY ASPECTS OF THIS SERIES--the characters aren’t ridiculed at school. Sure, some people think they’re weird, but there’s no shunning, no arc involving teasing or bullies. Rikka’s often content as a loner, but when she attempts to join in a social circle, she’s welcomed. Shinka’s obsessed with reinventing herself and appearing normal and seems to think that otherwise she’ll be cast out, but multiple characters mention that others at the school notice how she behaves (oddly, on occasion) and there are no social repercussions. Truly nice for a show that has characters spending quite a lot of time in school.
Verdict
English dub? Yes, and it’s got strong performances. Rikka’s voice actor in particular does a fantastic job capturing the difference between chunibyo!Rikka’s confidence and command, and regular!Rikka’s, well, normal awkward teenageness. (Plus, I also found her lower-than animegirl-average voice enjoyable.) (Double plus, I honestly think her English voice is better than her original Japanese voice at showing the difference between her emotions and chunibyo/reality.) Deko’s VA is fantastic showing the enthusiasm of the 9th grader (and what enthusiasm, Deko is like the Energizer Bunny), and Shinka’s VA manages to show her alternating annoyance, cheerfully sweet ideal self, and organizized leader voices.
Visuals: Fine, and I really liked the chunibyo designs for each character’s chunibyo phase. The contrast between chunibyo-vision (giant magic weapons; mysterious lights, fantasy landscapes) and reality (an umbrella or soup ladle; a strip of lights taped to the floor; a local park) was really well done.
Worth watching? Yessss. It’s very manageable--two 12-episode seasons--and while each season contains its own arc (you could stop after the first one, but why), together they make an excellent story. Heck, I think the second season is equal to, if not better than, the first, because the friend group is well-established and even more fun to watch.
Where to watch (USA, as of October 2020): Netflix (dub, sub); Crunchyroll (sub), HIDIVE (sub & dub, plus OVAs and film)

What would Michael, Jason, and Brahms be like with a demon s/o (I.e. horns, fangs, claws, wings, tail)?? Saw the one with an angel s/o and couldn’t help but wonder what it’d be like with a demon.
A/n: Sure thing! I’ve been meaning to do something like this after all. These got so long what the fuck? They might be a little long for headcanons, but I’ll still refer to these as such.
Warnings: Some NSFW.
. . .
Michael Myers
He’s initially quite skeptical of your existence, perhaps some hallucination or something his mentality had altered to make you appear demonic.
Of course, he eventually finds out that you are indeed real, and are most certainly dangerous. You will be considered a major threat to him for a long time, he will have trouble trusting you, regardless of how hypocritical it sounds.
Religion is not at all a factor considered in his initial mistrust of you, Michael doesn’t process Christianity— or really care the way others might, so he’s not going to throw crosses at you and give you a Jesus speech.
He is threatened by you, which is why it will not sit well with him in the beginning.
Michael grows attached to you though, his intrigue drove him to stalk you, your lack of fear in any of its forms of him drew him in and boiled his blood at the same time.
Your shadow is an interesting silhouette. Pointed horns grew from each side of your head, a tapered, forked tail worked as an extra prehensile limb. Your wings reminded him of the bats he’d read in animal books as a kid, semi-transparent skin and veins in each flap of skin and the thin bones that lined the shape and reinforced its strength.
Even the way you spoke struck his curiosity, sometimes it sounded like you were talking with two different voices at the same time. Your two-toned voice dragged out through sharp-pointed teeth that he’d watched tear into the flesh of one of his victim’s neck, and rip the arteries from their throat in attempts to protect him.
You were much like a willing pet. You were his guard dog of sorts, following him around even after he had discovered you doing it. If any of his victims somehow got the upper hand or posed a big enough threat to his well-being, he could expect you to take over the situation.
You became less of a pet once Michael began to see you more like a romantic interest rather than a safety blanket, and it did not take long for his attraction to you to form. Whether it be purely sexual or Michael’s form of caring for you is completely up to how much mutual interest you reflect back onto him.
He certainly does enjoy your biological differences, your increased strength challenges him and he liked fighting for your submission almost as much as simply receiving it. Also, your fangs brought out a lot of his kinks related to receiving pain in the bedroom, his neck is particularly sensitive, so any bites in that area will elicit vocal responses.
Michael also likes how it isn’t easy to break you, so he can be rougher with you without worrying about harming you too badly.
When you slept together there was always one of your demonic limbs wrapped around him. Your wings sometimes laid over him or you allowed him to lay on them, despite the fact that normally they remained closed. Your tail was always wrapped around his leg, even if you were just sitting close to him, your tail was quick to latch onto one of his limbs.
Your fierce protectiveness, although unnecessary and sometimes unwanted, is admittedly something he secretly enjoys, gets off of even if he’s in one of his extremely rare submissive moods.
Jason Voorhees
Jason hasn’t been in touch with anything centered around religion for a very long time, and he will be the least likely to even know the proper term for you. He’s not going to think “demon from hell”, or “spawn of Satan” when he first encounters you.
So, does he throw holy water at you? No. Does he consider you a huge threat? Oh yeah, definitely.
Jason had never come in contact with someone he couldn’t kill, you were stronger than anyone he’d hunted and faster than anyone he’d chased. And… you weren’t afraid? You were laughing— as you were running! Did you like him chasing you? It reminded him of when the other kids would play tag at camp, he was always left out but he’d always wanted to try.
The way you’d slow down on purpose, not bother to use your wings, and called his attention to you whenever he lost track of you really sold the idea that you wanted to play with him; like it was a game. Jason embraced his inner child for the first time in a long time, and when you’d started coming to visit him in the forest even after finally outrunning him, he was smitten.
You come to play games, talk to him, and even help him track down teens that managed to evade his rage. Although he doesn’t like you risking your life for him, he understands that you are very much capable of holding your own. And it really touches him, because the only other person who’d ever protected him was his beloved mother.
Your demonic attributes didn’t really have a lasting impression on him after he got used to you and your strange appearance. Sharp tapered horns, dark, curled bat’s wings, forked tail and razor-like teeth and claws that scared others barely phased him. Especially after you told him that you were discriminated and loathed for the way you looked.
Jason knows firsthand what isn’t feels like to be loathed and teased for what you look like, because of this he has an alarming amount of empathy for you. He was at least human for a short time, you were never human, and it wasn’t your fault that you were born to be what your peers called a monster.
The only thing Jason thinks is even slightly monstrous about you is the way you kill, but he does that too, and you only do it to protect him. In his eyes you can do no wrong, he puts you on a level almost equal to that of his mother, who he religiously believes can do nothing even remotely bad.
You have some tendencies that do confuse him sometimes though. Whenever you’re not out doing your own rounds or hunting for food you are practically attached to either him or someplace high, like trees, beams, and windows. You like to sit in elevated places and curl up around things much like an actual bat would.
Oftentimes times you just latch onto his back and hang there as he walks you around the woods or goes on his patrols. Your tail is almost always coiled around one of his legs, arms, or waist when you are close enough proximity, so you’re rarely not touching in some sort of way.
Jason loves the attention and practically absorbs your affection so it’s never a problem.
Jason is very inexperienced with intimacy, and it takes a lot of trust-building, reassurance, and telling him that sex isn’t always bad as long as you love each other and you want it. But once you start Jason finds himself liking that you are tough and that he never has to worry about being too rough or hurting you. More than you want him too at least.
Jason’s also naturally submissive, and actually likes you to have dominance over him in the bedroom, so your strength will become very attractive to him. Your stamina rivals even his though, sometimes he’s the one that has to tap out! Jason’s a sweetheart though, and will always make sure you’re satisfied even if he can’t be inside of you to do it.
He’s also incredibly sweet and cherishes you close to his heart, so he strongly prefers slow and sweet lovemaking. So if you can sit still long enough, and are alright with easing up on the biting, clawing— no matter how much he might actually like it sometimes, he’d be overjoyed to show you that he loves you in his way. No matter if your a demon, an angel, or a purple frog, you’re you.
Brahms Heelshire
This pussy bitch is scared. You just showed up at the Heelshire estate one night, seeking shelter from the rain long after Brahms’s episode with Greta.
He sees you and flips, hiding in the walls and watching you with paranoid and ever observant eyes through mirrors, cracks in the drywall, and closets. You got the image of a demonic being exactly, and since Brahms was brought up in a very religious family, he is conditioned to mistrust you.
If not for religious reasons, simply because Greta left some holes after she left him, he’s angry at what happened, angry at Greta for abandoning him. But he is also so fragile, still harboring the emotional weakness of a young child, and that you can work with.
The weather doesn’t let up for several days, so you inevitably are forced to stay in the Heelshire’s quiet, ‘empty’ house a little while longer. Brahms found out that you had been injured upon arriving, and he’d watched you tend to painful looking wounds the first night you stayed. You must’ve been attacked.
The more he watches you, the less afraid he becomes, and the more he begins to enjoy your presence.
You aren’t loud, destructive, or viciously feral like the demons and children of Satan, he’s read about. You were rather docile compared to the many ravenous interpretations of hellspawn Brahms was taught about. You seem to be lonely, cautious of every creak he might accidentally cause in the floorboards or walls.
You always appear to be sad too, sometimes you walked by mirrors and stared at your reflection like something (or everything) about it distressed you. Brahms couldn’t understand why. You were very pretty. Aside from your non-human horns, long bat-like wings that scrunched up against your back, your thin, forked tail, and sharp teeth— you looked relatively human.
Before you had the chance to leave, Brahms introduced you to the doll. He left it out in the open where he knew you would find it, your reaction was unexpected and almost a deal sealer.
You didn’t show any fear towards it, only intrigue, as your clawed fingers gently traced the doll’s porcelain features. You looked at the list of rules clipped to a clipboard at its side, and even more surprisingly, you stayed. You cared for the doll to your best ability despite the oddness of the situation.
You assumed whoever was in this house with you was offering you a place to stay as long as you followed those rules, and that you didn’t question. No one had ever tried to house your kind, you are grateful for the opportunity. But as time goes on you begin to feel like you are not the only one in this house.
You aren’t stupid. With your heightened senses, you can hear every creak, footstep, and heavy breath. Someone has been watching you since day one and you silently hope that one day they will reveal themselves so you can thank them properly.
The moment Brahms finally crawls out of the wall you are probably trying to leave, perhaps feelings cooped up or wanting to visit a friend, and he doesn’t let you go. In spite of your shock and mild mortification that this human had been watching you, you managed to assure him that you would stay and care for him.
You turn out to be the not only the perfect caretaker but also someone he starts to develop romantic feelings for, the kind he hasn’t felt since Greta gave him a run for his money.
Brahms often comes to sleep with you if he has nightmares or simply wants to snuggle up with you and your inhuman warmth. Your body heat is much warmer than the average human, so you’re practically his own personal heating system, especially during the winter months.
Brahms wonders if the books he’s read about demons being foul, heartless creatures should be re-written.

Logan and His Weird Brood of Endless Children (A Comprehensive List)
I promised to do it so here it is at last! Logan has had many children over the years (24 at least!) and all in different continuities. For the sake of this list, I’m only including the children that are canonically his own and not the people he only acted as a father/mentor for (so no Jubilee, Rogue, Kitty or Armor).
Honorary mention goes to Laura’s clones (especially Gabby) because they are technically Logan’s children but were cloned from Laura specifically instead (you’d think they’d be Laura’s kids but they canonically viewed her as their sister. The only one still alive is Gabby Kinney).
So! I’m doing this list in alphabetical order and I am going to include which Continuity they appear in. This is just a brief run-down of their origins and not the full history otherwise we’d be here for years.
1: Amiko Kobayashi (Earth 616)
Amiko’s mother (unnamed) was killed during a giant dragons rampage through Tokyo. Logan promised her dying mother that he would take care of Amiko. He also held her mother through her dying moments. Because he was a full-time X-Man Logan was unable to look after her personally, so he fostered her with his wife Mariko Yashida instead. Amiko lived with Mariko for a few years, seeing Logan on rare occasions, and enjoyed the plush life-style that Clan Yashida gave her.
She also met Kitty Pryde and went for ice-cream with her, Logan and Mariko. When Mariko was assassinated, no legal plan existed for Amiko’s care (why Marvel couldn’t have her move to the X-Mansion idk) and she ended up in the foster system. Logan thought that was fine, even sending money to help care for her, but discovered that her foster parents had been stealing the money.
Taking her away from the situation, he gave guardianship over to Yukio. Honestly Amiko got kidnapped a lot to be used against him but at least she’s still alive! She has limited martial arts and, due to her lineage, it is possible that she could develop mystical abilities though nothing has been confirmed for her.
2: Avery Connor (Earth 616)
After Logan’s skeleton was bonded to adamantium, one Dr David Connor took some of Logan’s genetic material and implanted it into the child his wife, Veronica Connor, was pregnant with (okay. Creepy.) The result of this was Avery Connor, specifically “designed” so that her powers would manifest when she hit maturity (yikes) with the hope that she would be stronger then Wolverine. By age 14 she was able to recover from a gunshot wound to the chest in about a minute. She only appeared in the 3 issue novel “Elektra and Wolverine: The Redeemer” which you can find on Comicpunch.net if you want to know her full story.
3: Brian and Mari Logan (Earth 1298)
These two are put together because they’re twins! They appear in the very last arc of Mutant X (#28 onwards). During this time, Logan is believed to be dead but is, in fact, alive and currently only has fragmented memories (basic Logan stuff really.) Instinct drives him to the house he shared with his wife, Mariko Yashida (the twins’ mom). While there, he runs into Mari who asks him if he’s her dad, because “mommy said that daddy went to heaven but Brian says he’s going to come back to us someday.”
Creed kidnaps the family, Logan tracks them down and has a heartfelt proper reunion with them, even hugging Brian. Pretty much the only thing Logan cares about during this last arc is getting his family to safety which is, you know, fair enough tbh.
4: Cameron Pryde (Earth 25158)
Cameron is the son of Kitty Pryde and Piotr Rasputin. He was born shortly before the mutant control act, which led to all surviving mutants being locked up in camps (oof.) When Kitty was taken away by sentinels, Logan took Cameron to safety and raised him as his own son, training Cameron to be a hunter in the wilds of the Sentinel Territories. Cameron was 17 when he met Kitty and his younger sister, Christina, whom ended up killing him.
5: Daken Akihiro (Earth 616)
Daken is probably the most famous of all Logan’s children, right next to Laura. Putting a trigger warning here for bullying and one suicide.
Daken is the son of Logan and Itsu. In 1946, during the last moments of her pregnancy, Itsu was murdered by Winter Soldier (yea) in an attempt to lure out Logan and return him to Madripoor. Romulus cut Daken from her womb, which Daken survived due to his healing factor. Daken was left on the doorstep of Akihira and Natsumi, who took his arrival as an answer to their prayers and raised him as their own. He was given the name “Akihiro” but the servants and other families secretly called him “Daken” (bastard dog), a slur about his mixed heritage.
This harsh treatment caused him to develop a cold persona to everyone but Akihira. One night, Natsumi confessed to Akihira that she was pregnant and didn’t actually love Akihiro. Daken overheard this, and within a year of Junichiro’s birth (sometime in 1957 so Daken was 10-11), he confronted Natsumi and said he’d killed her son (this was true). Akihira disowned him, Daken said his real name wasn’t “Akihiro” and then Natsumi tried to run him through with a bayonet on the end of a rifle. This triggered Daken’s mutant powers, and he ended up accidentally slashing her down. Akihira committed suicide.
Romulus appeared and told Daken that he was what Daken would someday become. Romulus sent him to a training camp in Canada, the same one Logan had been trained in 40 years prior. Other stuff happens here but basically Romulus ends up telling Daken that Logan is his father and lies to his face, saying that Logan was the one who killed Itsu with Daken still inside her, which is why Daken hates Logan’s guts. In the following years, Romulus nurtured this hatred.
You can’t see it in the image above but Daken does have a third claw on the underside of each wrist.
6: Erista (Earth 616)
Literally Erista only appears once. His mom is Gahck of the Savage Lands Fire Tribe and the only time we see him is when Logan is leaving said Savage Lands.
7: Hudson Logan (Earth 982)
Hudson is Rina’s half-brother and was a member of the Revengers, who attacked the Avengers on more then one occasion. However, he switched sides to fight against Galactus and then asked to be an official Avenger. Though suspicious of his motives, they let him join as they needed help fighting Sylene, Loki’s daughter.
8: Hulk Jr/Bruce Banner Jr (Earth 807128)
Baby Banner was the newest addition to the Hulk Gang, and Bruce’s favourite among them. When Logan killed the entire gang (you’ll find out why in a little while), he felt it was poetic justice that Hulk Jr be the first member of his new team of heroes to help retake the country.
500 years into the future, Hulk Jr helped defeat Galactus, using him as a power source for a time machine. He and his team ended up on Earth 616 and the F4 convinced them all to go live on Nu-World instead. The last we see of him is on a rebuilt Galactus engine heading to a new world.
9: Jade and Scotty Logan (Earth 807128)
Jade and Scotty were born 50 years into the future, to Logan and Maureen. Logan owed the Hulk Gang rent money and went off to collect it. He returned 2 weeks early only to find that his family had been killed because the Hulk’s “got bored.”
10: James “Jimmy” Hudson Jr (Earth 1610)
James’ mom is Magda, who you will probably know as Magneto’s wife and the mother of Wanda and Pietro. Logan entrusted Jimmy to his war friend, James Hudson. His last name was changed from “Howlett” to “Hudson” to make the adoption official, and his mutant origins would be kept a secret until his highschool days. Jimmy grew up to be like Logan, with a taste for red-haired women (okay Marvel, sure), a reckless lifestyle and a feral personality.
Unfortunately, Logan died before Jimmy could ever meet him. When Jimmy was drag-racing at 17 his car crashed and this is when he discovered he had a healing factor. His gf was disgusted by it and left him (ouch) and the next day he got a visit from Kitty Pryde. She told him he was Wolverine’s son, and gave him some of Logan’s old things, including his canadian dog tag (and a lock of Jean’s hair because god forbid Marvel let that go).
A holographic message from Logan told Jimmy “you’re my son, dont ask about your mother, don’t focus on the past, be thankful the Hudsons raised you and learn to live with the choices you make” (paraphrasing of course). His last message to Jimmy was that he never regretted having a son.
With Kitty’s encouragment, Jimmy found he had inherited Logan’s claws and formed a metallic coating over them. He would then seek out Jean, who helped him recruit other mutants.
He ended up bonded to a Symbiote eventually and now he goes by the alias Poison. Also he got rid of that dope beard and went with mutton-chops instead which, like, worst decision by far they hella look ugly on him.
11: Kendall Logan (Earth 9811)
Kendall’s mom is Ororo! She also has an unnamed baby brother! Kendall can manipulate the weather like Ororo and possesses a healing factor like Logan. She also has her father’s temper but her mother’s good attitude. She’s highly trained as a fighter and is as stealthy as an assassin. She was born in a universe where the Secret Wars never left Battleworld.
Due to various circumstances, Kendall and a bunch of other mutant kids ended up on an alternate earth where Sentinels ruled America. The kids then decided to stay here and wipe out the Sentinels.
12: Kirika Yashida (Earth 295)
In this reality, Logan and Mariko had a romance before the ascension of apocalypse. This romance led to the birth of Kirika. Logan was unaware of her birth and, after Japan’s destruction, joined the X-Men. Mariko joined the Human High Council and Kirika ended up the property of Sinister though how this happened is never stated. Magneto found her in a containment marked “X-23″ and was surprised when she unsheated her claws.
Kirika ended up being trained by Magneto and was tasked with bringing her father back to America with her. Important note, but on this earth Logan is still going by “Weapon X”. A bunch of other shit happens, and Kirika ends up being killed by Weapon X with 616 Logan mourning her death as he holds her charred remains, right before he went feral and attacked his 295 counterpart.
13: Kouen (Earth 13119)
A teenage clone of Logan, Kouen was created by an unknown organization, who ordered him to kill Logan, who they believed was the missing link they needed to create the “perfect race.” Instead of doing that, however, Kouen chose to help Logan rather than kill him.
14: Laura Kinney (Earth 616 and Evolution/Earth 11052)
The second most well-known of Logan’s children! Her comic origins are a bit more convoluted then her origins in Evolution so I’ll talk about both. Personally, I prefer her origins in Evolution but, ya know. Prefences and all.
I’m going to talk about her comic/616 origins first because it’s. A lot to get through and condense.
When Facility (yes that’s what the organization is called) failed to find a subject capable of surviving the bonding process of adamantium to bones (because they wanted to recreate the Weapon X program that made Logan), mutant geneticist Sarah Kinney was brought in to create a clone.
After 22 failed attempts of cloning, because they couldn’t find a Y Chromosome in the only bit of damaged genetic coding they had of Logan’s, Sarah proposed they make a female clone instead. Initially rejected, Sarah went and did it anyway, using her own genetic material to complete Logan’s. Dr Sutter was impressed but Dr Zander Rice claimed insubordination and forced Sarah to be the surrogate.
Laura spends 7 years training in the facility while Sarah tries to ensure that Laura retain some semblance of humanity. Rice had her subjected to radiation poisoning to acclerate her mutant gene growth and bonded her claws to adamantium.
Other shit happens, she ends up being harshly trained (and punished) by Kimura, then 3 years later she got her first mission, was punished for not returning with Rice, ended up ordered to kill Sutter and his family and then she managed to kill Rice. Unfortunately Rice exposed her to “trigger scent” which sent her into a rage that killed Sarah. In her dying words, Sarah names her “Laura.”
Other stuff happens but I’m skipping it so fast-forward and Laura tracks Logan down to the x-mansion where she beats him in a fight. She tells him who she is, he says he already knows cuz he got a letter from Sarah telling him the whole story (??? okay sure) but before they can have a proper talk Steve Rogers arrests her.
She gets interrogated by Steve and Matt Murdoch. Matt claims she’s innocent given her backstory, but Steve wants her to atone for her murders. Ultimately, Steve frees her so she doesn’t get exploited by SHIELD as a weapon.
Laura joins the X-Men and immediately gets protective over Logan, even following him on missions.
Now for Evolution/11052 canon which is way fucking easier to get through!
Logan learns through SHIELD that Dr Deborah Risman, working for HYDRA, managed to create a female clone of him after 22 failed attempts. Her only codename was X-23. (She doesn’t get the name Laura in the cartoon but that might be cuz it was cancelled before the last season.)
Denied a normal childhood, X23 was lonely (seriously you actually see her hugging teddy bears in Kitty’s room and getting jealous over how happy the X-Men teens are). She’d never had a companion, spending most of her time honing her skills under observation.
She breaks into the X-Mansion, defeating the other X-Men, and eventually confronts Logan. Logan refuses to fight back against her, spending his time trying to talk to her instead. X23 lashes out, screaming “everything I am is because of you!”
Logan eventually catches her wrists, telling her he’s the one person who understands what she went through, and admits he had no idea about what they did to her. When X23 breaks down in his arms, Logan hugs her back, saying he’s the closest thing she has to family.
When SHIELD shows up to take her in, Logan tells her to run for it. Laura hesitates, not wanting to leave him (you can tell by her face) but Logan repeats the order. She leaves and Logan tells Fury to leave her alone because she’s been through enough.
(Also fun note, the reason Laura is white in the comics and not brown is bc they wanted her to look “more like Logan” apparently).
15: Mongrels (Earth 616)
Led by Gunhawk (William Downing, one with the bandana), the Mongrels team consists of Fire Knives (redhead girl), Shadowstalker (purple girl), Cannon Foot (the big boy) and Saw Fist (green mask), all children of Logan’s from various different mothers. Put together by The Red Right Hand, these mercs all have a hatred for Logan though it’s never explained why, and wanted to cause him as much pain as possible. During their final fight with him, Logan manages to kill them all but is devastated to learn they were, in fact, his children.
He ends up burying them with their respective mothers.
16: Raze Darkholme (Earth 13729)
Raze’s mom is Mystique, whom he killed and replaced some time in the future. His claws are really short and he uses shapeshifting to make them longer (lol). His shape-shifting is supposedly stronger then Mystique’s. The first time we see him, he’s impersonating Kitty Pryde in order to get close to Logan and strike him down.
Raze has an older half-brother, whose father is Xavier (yes really). Raze wants to kill the entire human population, and bring all persecuted mutants from the multiverse into one place to create a mutant paradise. This plan is ultimately stopped by an alt earth’s Phoenix.
17: Reine du Rien (Earth 616)
Reine (pronounced “ren”) is a french sorceress and I think she’s also half-romani. She has Logan’s healing factor and claws, which glow a faint blue, and her clans magic. Her mother, Sylvie, had a one-night stand with Logan in the 60′s specifically to create Reine so that their clan would have an immortal child capable of killing a demon called “Truth” so they wouldn’t have to rely on Logan anymore.
As per usual, Logan didn’t know about her. In 1989 Logan tracked down her hometown but was told to fuck off by her aunt because he wasn’t needed anymore. Unfortunately, he caught Reine’s scent and, not one to let things go, kept trying to talk to her whenever he happened to see her. In 2008, Reine finally confirmed she was his daughter and said her clan didn’t think she needed a name, but began calling her Reine which meant “nothing.” (Oof.)
After explaining that it wasn’t her he was trying to hunt, but Truth, Logan and Reine crossed their claws and promised to kill Truth together, thus setting them both free.
18: Rina Logan (Earth 982)
So! Rina’s mother is Elektra! She’s a skilled martial artist and gymnast. Her claws are made of psychic energy! She used to get bullied at school for being the child of an immigrant and unemployed biker, but then opinion changed when everyone saw Logan pick her up from school and learned that her mom was a wealthy martial arts master (lol get fucked). Rina is canonically a daddy’s girl, and a lot of heroes give her a wide berth because she’s considered as dangerous as Logan is.

Just because I can't get the image out of my head with Christmas approaching, Fen and Seabrass discover a decorated Christmas tree in a vault of the Red Queen. In the end Piper finds them after whatever hilarity has ensued, because she was worried after losing contact with the pair
Okay so first off, I’m so sorry this took so long. This ended up being a lot longer than I wanted but honestly, there’s nothing wrong with a couple hundred extra words. (I had to stick most of it under a read more though, so there’s that. Sorry mobile users >_>)
The whole crew knew it well: SeaBrass was bored out of his mind. Acting as the “police”for a still-recovering society was all good and fun, sure, but taking out the lingering Scrappers and unconvinced Royalists (Who were still trying to enforce the dead Queen’s laws) were starting to grow stale. He wanted something slower for a change.
In his nightly musings he decided that having an adventure by himself was a fun idea, so he formulated a plan to raid the one of the Red Queen’s vaults, taking whatever treasures it might still hold. Caution still whispered persistent warnings in the back of his mind, though, so to shut it up he convinced Fen to tag along for the ride. Besides, they seemed oblivious enough to not realize they very well might get in trouble—nevertheless, if any danger arose, they would be a good partner to have in a fight.
He managed to convince Piper to send the two of them onto a small Scrapper ship that had been reported to be carrying Scrappers who were bugging the locals. They were decommissioned swiftly and when it came time to leave, SeaBrass directed the escape pod in the opposite direction. If everything went to plan, they’d be in and out of the vault before anyone suspected a thing.
Before long, the pod had reached the vault, sliding into the docking bay like a plug fitting into its port. They had to fight with the door on the vault’s side to get it to open, but once they did, they found it to be very dark inside.
“I’ve got this,” Fen exclaimed, turning every light on their body on,lighting them up to the brightest setting they could without overexerting themself.
Fen started forward, looking about rather eagerly for hidden treasures. SeaBrass didn’t expect Fen to move so quickly, so he had to pick up the pace, not wanting to get left behind. After a few minutes, Fen inadvertently kicked something, the item making a loud clattering sound as it scraped against the floor. Startled, they jumped a bit, their antennae standing on end.
“Aye, what is it?” SeaBrass asked, immediately striding over to it. He leaned over it, studying it with curiosity; and it wasn’t long before Fen joined him.
“It’s a hook,” observed Fen.
SeaBrass picked it up; just from an initial feel he could tell it was pretty heavy, much heavier than his own. “And a rather fancy one, it be.”It was true; fancy markings and patterns were etched into thebowl-like bottom. Whoever wore this must’ve been in a highly respectable position.
It was when SeaBrass started fawning over it, saying how he’d pick up all the ladies with it that Fen grew bored and moved on, their pirate friend unaware that he was being left in the dark. They fumbled around old and dusty antiques and other uninteresting things before something green caught their “eye”.
On first glance, it almost looked like Wonky’s plant, Earnest, but this one was much taller. It lacked those “leaf” things that Earnest had, instead having these short, pin-like obtrusions on its branches. There were a weird plethora of trinkets on it, from shiny orbs to porcelain depictions of organics. Looking closer, Fen saw that a bunch of wires with unlit bulbs attached were also wrapped around the strange plant.
How does it live without light? Earnest has to be set by the window everyday. For“photosynthesis” as Wonky calls it.
Fen reached out to touch one of the pins—it warped under his touch and felt like some sort of plastic. Nothing like fleshy, durable texture of Earnest’s thick stem. Was it perhaps fake?
“Hey!Wait up… What it that?” Seabrass said as he finally caught up with Fen.
“I have reason to believe that it is an artificial plant.”
“Aren’t those wires wrapped around it though? Like those doohickeys that make ye run?”
“Yeah, they are… perhaps I could do something with them.” Fen followed the wires with their “eyes,” looking for an end to them, or more specifically, something they could interact with. Their gaze fell to the floor, where the wire finally ended with two flat, metal prongs,a small holes in both of them. He walked over and picked it up,tracing the holes with their fingers.
Fen distinctly remembered channeling power into a similar device years ago… what would happen if they did the same to this one?
“…Gabriel?Stand back, I don’t want you to get injured.” Fen had adopted Piper’s habit of calling SeaBrass by his first name, and to be frank, he hated it. No matter what he tried, however, he couldn’t convince Fen to call him by his nickname.
SeaBrass begrudgingly obeyed and took a few long strides backwards, allowing Fen to put whatever plan they had into motion.
It happened so quickly: sparks of electricity branched out everywhere(somehow not touching anything), tiny little lights appeared on the tree, Fen quite literally squeaked and accidentally tackled SeaBrass to the ground in their attempt to get away. Fen suddenly picked up SeaBrass, tucked themself underneath his back and shivered violently.
SeaBrass looked like he had just had his harpooning skills insulted, was stomped on and spat at. Not only was he being used as a hiding place for his nutty teammate, he was being used as a spot to hide from an inanimate object.
“Oh,so it lights up? You learn something new everyday, I suppose.”
Fen’s attitude did a complete one-eighty; one minute they were cowering under SeaBrass and the next they were hovering protectively over him, lightning coil charged and ready to go. Seabrass fell to the ground, landing painfully on his back again. He was sure he would have to have his back looked at later.
“Hey, it’s okay! I don’t mean any harm,” the voice said at Fen, who was growling (SeaBrass was starting to suspect that they were some sort of animal in a robot disguise).
As Fen lowered their lightning coil, withdrawing the power from it, their shoulder was used by SeaBrass for support in getting himself up. They then shared an identical confused look as they took in the bot before them.
He seemed to be some sort of Royalist, but really old, if the way he hunched over was anything to go by. He had white facial “hair”and an eye patch. He gave them a warm smile. “I sort all the old stuff around here. You won’t believe the kind of crazy thingamabobs I’ve taken in over the years, and that fake, decorative plant in the corner is no exception. The little bulbs on it was the one mystery I’ve never solved, but it seems you two have accomplished the task for me.”
They stood in awkward silence for a minute as they took the info in.
“I don’t like it,” Fen decided, and knowing Fen, SeaBrass couldn’t ask why. Fen was strange like that.
“So it is a fake plant, then. What use is a plant if it doesn’t make any o’ that stuff called oxygen?” asked Seabrass.
The old robot shrugged. “I’ve heard rumors suggesting that long before the Earth exploded, it was worshiped, organics leaving boxes wrapped with fancy paper underneath its branches. The tree would bless the boxes, leaving gifts inside them.”
Fen blurted out, “That’s ridiculous.”
“Of course it is, the organics were complete nut jobs.”
The Royalist chuckled. “But you have to admit, it is decorated very nicely, no?”
It was mere seconds later that they found out that Fen didn’t think so, because in those few seconds Fen managed to set the tree on fire with their lightning coil.
“PUT YOUR HANDS UP!” Someone shouted, and in response, all three robots in the room did so, looks of utter panic on their faces (Even Fen,who only had “eyes” for a face, managed to pull off a terrified look). The next thing they knew was that they were staring down the barrel of Piper’s rifle. Piper herself had an absolutely livid expression.
Before she decided to pull the trigger on the poor man Fen and SeaBrass quickly explained the whole thing, knowing full well that they would face punishment later. Piper put her gun down and raised her brows when they finished, clearly processing their words.
SeaBrass sighed and looked to the floor. “…Sorry, Cap’n.”
Instead of receiving an annoyed sigh and forgiveness like he hoped, SeaBrass instead earned a slap on the face. “Don’t do that again! You had me scared to death back there. Turned the whole ship into a sauna, I was steaming so much.” She sighed, her rage dissipating. “Listen, if you wanted to have some fun, I would have gladly taken you to a concert or something. Ask me instead of deciding to raid some old man’s vault. Now go wait for me in the ship.”
“Bu-But it’s not his vault, it was the Queen’s vault! Anything in here is up for grabs!” SeaBrass protested, but Piper clearly wasn’t listening. Besides that, a grumpy Fen was trying to drag him away, so he realized he wouldn’t be able to change the Captain’s mind.
“Don’t worry about it; I grabbed the hook on the way out for you,” Fen whispered. To their relief, Seabrass’s face broke into the widest grin they’ve ever seen.
“What a peculiar pair of robots,” the old robot said as he watched the pair trudge out.
Piper groaned and rubbed the spot between her photoreceptors. “You have no idea. I love them, they mean everything to me, but they can make me worry like no tomorrow.”
Suddenly, water flew over their head, arching in a beautiful curve before landing on the burning tree, dousing its flames.
“Only you can prevent forest fires!”
“DORA, FOR COG’S SAKE, GET BACK ON THE SHIP!”

I could not move when I woke up, and was so disoriented by the weird weight across my waist that I momentarily panicked. And then I remembered Jim. Jim-from-the-bar who was also Jim-my-captain who was also apparently Jim-who-had-me-pinned-in-bed. He groaned, and stretched his arm above his head before burrowing his head at the nape of my neck and making a noise that sounded a little like a purr.
"Mmm. Good morning."
"Jim, Alpha starts in forty minutes," I whispered.
"No time to revisit past sins then." He sounded genuinely disappointed as he pushed himself up to sitting. I pulled the sheet over myself and slipped off to the bathroom. I was in the sonic when I heard him step into the bathroom and run the water at the sink. I lingered in the shower, suddenly shy about him seeing me naked by the harsh light of day. I mean, there is no harsh daylight in space, it's all artificial day cycles, but the lights were on and I bore the marks of a mother. Not exactly something I wanted Jim seeing quite yet. Not as my lover, not as my captain.
He must have sensed my shyness because he didn't wait around in the bathroom, and was dressed by the time I reemerged. He was waiting for me. I raised an eyebrow in question.
"Don't do that, you look too much like Spock," he laughed. "It felt awkward to just dress and run. I don't want this to be awkward."
“This?” I was a little dumbfounded.
“This.” He gestured to the room, the bed, him and me. “I don’t want whatever we are doing to be weird.”
“Right. Okay,” I paused. “Yeah. Okay.” I wasn’t sure what else I should say. He smiled and leaned forward, brushing his lips across mine.
“I will see you later,” he breathed across my cheek and it gave me shivers.
“I would like for this to not be really overt, Jim.” I didn’t want people thinking the new kid was getting preferential treatment because she was banging the captain. Actually, I just didn’t want people thinking I’d fallen into the captain’s bed within the first month of our cruise.
“I wouldn’t dream of making it public knowledge,” he reassured me, smooth and smiling. “After all, I’m the captain.”
“As long as we’re clear,” I nodded. “Now if you’ll excuse me, Leo is a hardass and if I am late, I will hear about it.”
“He adores you.”
“He’ll still take it out of me,” I laughed, breezing through the door. I just made it into medbay with enough time to make Leonard his coffee. Mine was still in the replicator when he entered. He looked at me and smirked, taking his coffee from me with the cheesiest grin on his face that I’d ever seen. He looked completely ridiculous, and I realized that he’d spent years cultivating his cranky face just so he wouldn’t look like a complete dork.
The grin didn’t budge during report. It didn’t move when he led me into his office. It didn’t so much as twitch when I spilled my coffee out of nerves. I sat down, feeling defeated. How he could have known that Kirk and I had wound up together was beyond me.
“I was pretty sure when you handed me your orders that you’d been the morning after the night before girl,” he commented. “But I was absolutely sure when I saw you without your glasses.”
“And you didn’t think to warn me?” I gasped.
“Jim is my closest friend, kid,” he started. “Why would I warn you?”
“To spare me the mortification of how I’d discovered I’d had a one-nighter with my captain before I even knew he was my captain?” I blurted. He laughed outright.
“No,” he shook his head. “You both needed to figure it out on your own. If I’d been worried Jim would be upset, I would have warned you. But he seemed pretty pleased with how things turned out when he left the cantina last night.”
“Oh?”
“Don’t act like you’re innocent, darling. You look more tired than usual, and,” he pulled down the edge of my undershirt at my neck and smirked again, “a little bit of bruising. I have a salve for that.”
“Have I mentioned how much I hate you, Leo?” I asked. He laughed again, and this time his smile was more natural, not the idiotic shit-eating grin from before. He was such a handsome man when he smiled.
“I must be doing my job right,” he winked. “Now let’s get your labs drawn.”
I pursed my lips and sighed. “Really? You knew just by looking at me what was wrong. Why do you need labs?”
“Because I’m your doctor, damnit, not a magician. You know I need diagnostics to confirm any treatment plan,” he snapped, drawing my blood with confidence. I followed him through all the steps to check his initial diagnosis, and when he clenched his jaw, I felt a small tingle of worry.
“What’s wrong?”
“Something isn’t adding up here,” he murmured. “Climb onto the imager, kid.”
I followed his direction with some nervousness. He watched the scanner as it ran the length of my body and squinted at the readout like he didn’t like what he’d seen. I started to feel a little panicky when he pulled the curtain around us and sighed. “Can you take your uniform off? Just the top,” he asked. I flushed. It didn’t matter that I had fallen into bed with Jim a second time, I’d been developing a weird crush on Leonard since the first day I’d been on the Enterprise. Thankfully I was pretty sure his feelings stopped at the mentor level. I tried to act cool as I pulled my shirt over my head, but I’d never learned a way to prevent blushing.
“Good god, woman, I’m your doctor. Relax,” he snapped. I laughed.
“I’m weird about anyone seeing me unclothed,” I admitted, lying back on the table.
“You’re clothed enough that no one would look sideways at a beach, other than to think you had too much on,” he growled, and began palpating my abdomen. The man had a repertoire of unhappy facial expressions that defied description, and he cycled through a number of them slowly as his fingers pressed and dug into my flesh. He sighed and crossed his arms, looking thoughtfully at me. “You’re what? 28? 29?”
“27,” I corrected, pulling my undershirt back on.
“I didn’t see anything in your personnel file about children,” he started.
“Because there isn’t anything in my personnel file about children,” I confirmed. I hoped it was enough that he would drop it, but even if he did, I didn’t think it would be because he believed me, but because he recognized it was a no-go topic.
“Bryn, if I’m your doctor, I expect honesty from you about your medical history.” His tone was gruffer than usual, and I sighed. “Was there a pregnancy?”
I paused, and adjusted my undershirt. When I couldn’t justify not answering or not looking at him, I met his gaze with my own. “Yes.”
“You have a huge amount of scar tissue around your uterus,” he offered, ostensibly as justification for wanting to know about my reproductive history.
“The endometriosis is in my history,” I countered, raising an eyebrow.
“It usually resolves with pregnancy, and doesn’t recur. Your abdominal scans show new scar tissue development over the resolved scar tissue. I’m going to do a further investigation of your hormones to rule anything else out,” he nodded. “I’m not interested in your medical history for anything other than the medical relevance, Bryn. If there’s anything else you’ve withheld in your Starfleet admission, I’d like to know about it.”
“That’s the big one. Anything else I left out was accidental,” I replied honestly.
“If anything else comes up, just go ahead and toss it in your file,” he recommended. “I won’t write you up for this one. You must have had a reason to hide this. Do you require any other follow-up as a result of it?” I realized he assumed I’d either lost or terminated the pregnancy, and he was trying to dance around whether I needed counselling.
“Nothing that is unresolved.” Except for the existence of my daughter, I thought.
We’d discovered a new planet. I tried to be cool about it because everyone else was acting like it was no big deal, and I guess they were right. We were just filling mission parametres. But it was so cool. There was life on the planet. Life, I was reminded, that we couldn’t interact with because it violated the Prime Directive. So Chekov plotted its location, an away team investigated as much of the planet as was reasonable, and we continued on our way toward Proxima B to drop off a crate of vaccinations.
Proxima B had been the first Earth colony. When the warp drive was first successfully tested, the thought of a similar planet so close to earth but in a different solar system was too enticing to ignore. So after a number of trial missions to Mars, which was an inhabitable, unrelenting planet, sights were set on Proxima B. Was there life there? It was in the goldilocks belt, a term used to describe planets that are at an optimal distance from their sun - not too hot, not too cold, likely having liquid water. It turned out there wasn’t much in the way of intelligent life on the planet, but it was abundant in all the things an Earth colony would need.
Leonard had informed me that we would take a transport to the surface and give some much needed education and inservicing to the Proxima B doctors. I was nervous about that. As a brand new doctor, what could I possibly be teaching these experienced colonial doctors?
“That’s exactly it, kid,” Leonard reassured me. “You are brand new. You have all the latest techniques, and are aware of all the newest innovations in treatment and medication.”
“I feel sick.”
“Not quite so easy,” he laughed. “Besides, it was only last week when you showed me that new technique for dissolving kidney and gallstones. You’ll be a real benefit to the medical away team.”
“I have my doubts, but you are the boss,” I laughed.
“I would have thought by now you’d trust me,” he teased. Three times a week he was dragging me into anti-gravity drills, and I hadn’t died yet, as he was so fond of pointing out. I trusted him with my safety, without question. I said as much, and he laughed again, walking back to his office. He was obviously done with boosting my ego for the day.
I tried to suppress my anxiety about teaching and went to check charts. We had two inpatients in medbay. One was an ensign who had presented with a cardiac arrhythmia that the tricorder couldn’t diagnose. On further investigation, we discovered that he actually had a birth defect that hadn’t been seen in over a hundred years on earth, and had been missed during every physical and assessment while he was at the Academy. Leonard had given him a pill that started the regeneration of the mitral valve, but we’d kept him just to keep an eye on him. It was one of those cases that required reading about techniques from hundreds of years ago.
“Ensign Blackwater, how are you feeling this morning?” I asked as I looked over the reading from the tricorder. Everything looked to be good. I checked the scans, and saw the mitral valve had finished reforming and looked exactly as it should.
“Good,” he smiled. “Last night was the first time I’ve slept well in ages.”
“On a medbay bed? That’s unheard of!” I laughed. “You’re looking good, Ensign. Did you know that back in the old days, they would use the mitral valve of a pig to fix this defect?”
“They didn’t!” He exclaimed. “That seems barbaric!”
“You know, if there’s anything I learned in my med history classes it’s that everything old becomes new again at some point. Hopefully I’ll never need to slaughter a pig so I can replace your mitral valve, but there’s a lot of general wound treatments that have been going in and out of favour since the medieval times,” I laughed. “Anyhow, I’m sure you’d like to get back to your own room. We’ll leave a monitor probe on you, but I think you can be released on your own recognisance. Two more days of rest, then a few days of light duty and you should be perfectly fit.”
“I’m sure Scotty will appreciate hearing that,” Blackwater smiled. “I can go?”
“Get out of here before I change my mind.” I nodded. I proceeded on to my next patient and checked her overnight scans. She’d been working in the botany labs and somehow managed to ingest Borgia plant. We’d had to analyse the toxin in the plant to come up with an antidote, and she’d come dangerously close to dying before we finally synthesized a treatment. She was still weak and needed assistance with day to day activities like mobilization and bathing. But I was beginning to wonder if she wasn’t malingering, as I’d caught her up when I’d popped back into medbay after forgetting my PADD the previous night. Any time Leonard assessed her though, he seemed to think she was just barely managing.
“Lieutenant Graves, how are you feeling this morning?” I asked as I walked into her room. She was laying on her side, head propped up with one hand, other hand placed provocatively on her hip. When she saw it was me, she scrambled to lay back in a more neutral position. I hadn’t missed that the way she’d positioned herself had offered and uninhibited view of her cleavage, and more of her upper thigh than I cared to see.
“I’m so tired this morning,” she began. “I never should have tried walking to the toilet last night.”
“You seemed to be doing quite well when I found you,” I commented as I flipped through her scans. Everything was normal, as it had been the previous two days. Her muscles weren’t showing any sign of fatigue, according to the tricorder. And with a quick glance at her, I was able to tell she’d styled her hair and put on makeup before I’d entered the room.
“I pushed too hard, Doctor Erikssen,” she shook her head. “I was so hoping to impress Leon- uh, Doctor McCoy this morning.” She barely caught herself in the familiarity. I fought the urge to raise my eyebrow and nodded.
“Doctor McCoy is busy this morning arranging an educational opportunity for doctors on Proxima B,” I explained. “I’m afraid you’re stuck with me.”
“That’s too bad,” she said. Her eyes widened when she realized what she’d said and she scrambled to find words. “I mean, it’s too bad he’s so busy taken away from patients. Leaving you on your own like this.”
I smiled. “I think we’ll get the physiotherapist to help you ambulate this morning, Lieutenant. You should be ready for discharge by this afternoon.”
“But I’m Doctor McCoy’s patient,” she protested. “Shouldn’t he be making that decision?”
I laughed. “Like you said, he’s left me in charge of medbay while he fulfils the duties of the CMO today.”
I noted my orders, and checked in with nursing as to whether anything had come up while I’d been with my two patients.
“Your slate is open,” Nurse Chapel handed me the appointment PADD. Sure enough, there was nothing on it.
“Surely we aren’t done all those crew physicals?” I asked. She nodded.
“Your last one was yesterday. From here on out, it’s actual medical needs. And there’s no one in need right now,” she confirmed.
“Well, in that case, I guess I should check in with Doctor McCoy.”
Leonard was poring over his PADD, his brow furrowed in what looked to be combination of frustration and concentration. “You didn’t tell me we’d finished the physicals,” I accused.
“Didn’t think it would be that exciting to you,” he commented without looking up.
“Are you kidding? I would have gone on a tear last night,” I laughed. “Well, in as much as I can on this ship. I would have rolled in this morning with a pair of sunglasses and begged for a potassium hypo.”
Leonard stopped scowling at his PADD and looked up, scowling at me. “That reminds me, we need to fix your eyes.”
“Not today, we don’t,” I refused. I was nervous about the procedure. Nervous enough I’d seen the ship’s optometrist to see if I could be fitted for a different pair of contact lenses. Leonard shook his head.
“You may be under the impression that this is a democracy, kid, but the buck stops with me. I approved that procedure at least two weeks ago and you’ve been stalling ever since. It takes less than fifteen minutes,” he snapped. My jaw tensed.
“I’ve got new contacts on order,” I protested. He shook his head.
“You don’t, I cancelled that requisition when I saw it,” he replied. “You’ll need to be monitored for the duration of Alpha and part of Beta, but if you would just allow me to do it now, you’d be back in your bunk before dinner.”
“If I allow you?” I cocked an eyebrow in question.
“You can allow me, or I can order you,” he explained. “I like the working relationship we’ve developed, Bryn, and I don’t want to order you to do anything. But I will.”
“Fine,” I conceded. “On one condition.”
“That is?”
“Discharge Lieutenant Graves before she starts planning your wedding,” I begged. Leonard’s eyes widened.
“She’s what?”
“She’s malingering because she’s got the hots for you, Leo. She wasn’t happy with my discharge orders. I think you need to go discharge her,” I explained.
