Devastated to hear about Tina Turner’s passing, today. Beyond being a monolith of an artist who survived so much and created so much, she’s also single-handedly the reason why everyone in Australia knows at least one line dance—the Nutbush City Limits.

I have bounced my way through that song through primary school; through high-school, with my then best-friend, the both of us trying not to laugh because the boy we both had a crush on was in front of us; I’ve bounced my way through it at every major milestone birthday party so far and at my friend’s wedding, drunkenly, where I kicked off my heel into one of the groomsmen’s face.

You guys don’t understand—we all know this dance. We’re taught it in school and then we just keep dancing it at random events. My friend had it on the Do Not Play list at his wedding because he didn’t want to see his family line dancing and it still got played. My best friend and I did it beginning-to-end at the last birthday party she had before moving countries—just the two of us, while her husband did the dishes, LOL.

It should literally be a National Day of Mourning. RIP Tina—thank-you for the music (but mostly thank you for Nutbush City Limits).
