The thing is about the idea that James changed even if he hexed Snape behind Lily’s back is that I agree we’re supposed to accept he changed despite this. But I don’t accept it. James is Head Boy in 7th year. James has power and authority and a direct line to the staff as a result. In short, he has the means and the connections to find a way to de-escalate. He has means of self defence that don’t involve violence. The fact that it is his victim of the previous 6 years who is now fighting back against him makes it *worse* that he retaliates instead of de-escalating. I have to pretend JKR didn’t make him Head Boy to make it work in my head (to be fair, I think it’s genuinely possible that she retroactively changed this. It’s never mentioned again after the first book and you’d think Remus would bring it up to defend him in the fifth book)
"I have to pretend that the contents of this book is entirely different than what it is in order for my opinions to make sense to me." I hope that works out for you haha but it's got nothing to do with me, frankly. Like you can certainly choose to "not accept" it but I can also choose to not accept that Draco isn't a Hungarian ballerina who only speaks in riddles. I don't want to be rude but if your position is based on changing or ignoring the elements of canon that don't fit your preferred narrative I don't think we have a lot to discuss tbh.
#genuinely how is this different than marauders stans pretending every death eater except snape was a poor little victim#also its so funny how ppl expect james to be the most emotionally mature judicious 17 year old of all time#but sev joining the death eaters at the same age is fine and excusable ig.#james is not going to be some perfect paragon of virtue at 17-18 lmaooo#replies
