I was gonna add a little rant in the tags since about this but @spifflocated beat me to the punch in the replies with their beautifully cogent & empathetic response
okay someone desperately needs to fill the internet with accessible clear info on what distinguishes plant "species" "variety" etc because I'm sick and tired of seeing plants labeled so ridiculously poorly.
Yes i hate American landscaping culture but I can't exactly blame people for falling for it, when there's no way to even TELL what species of plant you are purchasing at most big box stores
Saw an article advertising something called "Diamond Marvel" Euphorbia or something like that, and I was just staring at it like...Genus Euphorbia has over 2,000 species in it. God knows what this plant is.
#like it boils down to the fact that so many of these cultivars are so crossbred and artificially selected that they may as well be#considered a different species. depending on how you want to stretch the species concept which is SO fucking malleable#like. just look up the cultivar name I swear to you it’ll give you all the information you need on your domesticated euphorbia#like broccoli cauliflower and kale are all brassica oleracea but they all have different needs bc they’re wildly different cultivars of the#same plant!!! in that case knowing the binomial name doesn’t do jack shit in its care needs!#idk. just fucking talk to your local nursery or garden center employee they’ll help you out.#also it’s not just American landscaping culture. cultivar naming is old old old old old. just look up the history of tulips and roses lol
