Reflection

I took a couple long breaks from writing this year. After finishing "Submissioner Gordon" in December of 2022, I was at a pretty bad low from lack of interaction with that fic. My heart has NEVER been in something as much as it was that fic, so to have so many hits and so little interaction made me think everyone hated it. Yet I continued the story with the Kinkuary prompts, where I wrote a short fic every day for 28 days. Again, I feel like it bombed.

At the same time, I made what I thought would be my last hurrah in the Harry Potter fandom, and it didn't do so great either. I was in a BAD spot comparing myself to other writers, so I took a long hiatus.

During that break, I started watching the entire MCU with my son, start to finish. My brain grabbed onto Bruce Banner and Natasha Romanoff and would NOT let go. So in May, I began publishing the "Never Say Never" series, where I try to fix their story.

The feedback from the Marvel fandom and Brutasha readers/writers really warmed my heart and got me back in the groove. I am forever thankful to them, because it truly restored my confidence in writing.

I will always be thankful for my Wizarding World series and the Submissioner Gordon/Daddy Issues universe, and my brain loves to revisit those stories and characters. It's just bittersweet because it never really found its audience. However the feedback I got from my foray into the MCU fandom has built my confidence enough that I am able to write in HP and Dark Knight without really worrying what others think. I am just doing it for me and my love for the characters. I know my writing isn't bad--- it's just not a lot of people's cup of tea.

I also want to give a shoutout to the small but steadfast Gary Oldman fandom I have found on Tumblr and Instagram. They've become very dear to my heart, and I love that we can share random thirst posts together when so many others just don't get it.

So, this was definitely not one of my better years. I have three WIPs and while I plodded away at all three, I was never happy enough to post new chapters.

What’s really sad is I finally hit 1 million words posted on dreamwidth—and then I pretty much struck out this year. I’m mostly posting this cuz I think its good for newer writers to realize that yes, even experienced writers have years where things just go all pear-shaped.

The story that was easiest/or most fun to write? Still enjoying my MIB AU. Now if I could actually finish it…

Hardest story to write: Lead Me Through the Fire from 2022 was one of those fics where all the different pieces of the plot had to fit together just so. I spent more time than I’d like to admit second-guessing myself on how I arranged the chapters.

Your sweetest funniest story: I have a soft spot for Hawaii Five-0’s Eric Russo. The character is very funny and often wildly inappropriate. I wrote a scene in one of my WIPs where Eric is just soooo Eric

Your saddest scene: I didn’t write anything sad this year.

Most unintentionally telling story: hmmm. I can’t think of anything too revealing in my fic? Except a tendency to write too many AUs?

Are any of your fics named after/heavily inspired by music? Yes. A lot of my fics have their own playlists and that music definitely influenced those fics. I don’t usually share these songs—or name my fics after songs—because I listen to a lot of obscure stuff most people have never heard of.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? I continued to get a lot of interesting and thought-provoking comments on Care and Feeding of a Super SEAL this year. There are many amazing fix-it fics for S10xE22 written by insanely talented writers—so its crazy and humbling that people are continuing to read and comment on mine.

Fanfiction risks you took this year? sadly, none.

My favorite part of fandom this year: We had new people join our fandom!

You know, I really don’t get what has happened to fandoms these last few years. It used to be that fans just shrugged and continued to write, create, and have fun—even their fandom didn’t have any new content being made. Am I the only one who thinks its weird that most fans now book it for the nearest exit as soon as a show is canceled or a movie series is over?

Last song: Apparently it was ‘Two Time’ - Jack Stauber, according to Spotify? I’ve also been relistening to a few tracks from Falsettos all day, for some reason. ‘I’m Breaking Down’ got stuck in my head somehow. I’m not super big on musical theater, but I LOOOOVE Falsettos and especially Trina :) You can probably tell I have a certain type of favorite characters/media lol.

Currently reading: Nothing, unfortunately! I haven’t read any books/stories in an embarrassingly long time :( I am so ridiculously busy and haven’t had the time/motivation to read and get invested in new characters. I have a bunch of series I want to reread for nostalgia purposes, though. I’m also strangely tempted to read the Animorphs series? LOL. I looked it up on AO3 for the first time a few months ago while in the kids’ section of the library with my IRLS and we were assessing the popularity of kids’ books based on the amount of AO3/Wattpad fics (btw, there are a shockingly low amount of Geronimo Stilton fics in the world). I wasn’t expecting there to be an Animorphs fandom, but there IS? And the fics are really GOOD even though I don’t know the source material? Anyway. Tempted to read it because I like putting teens in situations /lh. Also I want to read more short stories! Send me recommendations, if you have any.

Last thing I googled: This is so embarrassing. ‘Bathroom cruising’ LMAOOOO. I was just writing a funny bit, but I wanted to make sure it was accurate, okay? T_T Other recent searches include my voice lesson Lieder, various areas I’ve felt pain recently (because I’m a hypochondriac /lh), and a vlog I had to watch for my job… I was writing an article about it.

Sweet/spicy/savory: Savory. Every time. I love savory foods, and they’re basically the only types of food I ever crave. Then I would go with spicy, but only if it’s spicy in a flavorful way (and not just a painful way). I don’t like sweet foods except for chocolate—and, even then, I am infamous among my friends and acquaintances for only liking SUPER dark chocolate… like 70% cocoa or more. I would say my favorite flavor profile is bitter! :)

Current obsession: I think y’all already know :^) I am incapable of having more than one strong interest at once, soooo DnDads has quite literally been occupying my brain since liiiike October 2022… almost a year ago now! o_o Holy shit. I’ve been really busy with work and school in the past month or so, so I haven’t done basically anything else in my free time. I’d like to start cross stitching again because I have some projects to finish, and I got some of my late grandmother’s jewelry-making supplies recently, so I’ll toy around with that, too.

Currently working on: Like, right this second? Discussion post replies for my Writing in Digital Environments course :p In general? As far as hobbies go, the beginnings of my next longfic chapter! As far as work goes, I’m working on article about a mural. I have to drive like 30 mins to get a features image for it tomorrow ugh. At least I get to kill time on the clock :’)

If you want to read about falling in love with people who create a safe environment for Dream to re-learn who he is at core, this is your fic. Hob is so patient and kind, opens Dream up to new experiences with simple happiness, etc. I wouldn’t call it a slow burn because there are hints of sweetness and romance from the beginning, but it is a gentle slope full of all the things I love, mainly trust-building and a kind of trauma recovery. This fic also features ‘surprisingly’ cuddly!Dream as well, so I’m dead; this fic killed me 😊 This fic has been added to my favorite Sandman fics reclist on neocities.

Fortunately, their raven comes for help before it's too late. https://archiveofourown.org/works/43412199 My thoughts: One of my favorite parts of ‘Hob saves Dream from Roderick Burgess fishbowl in the basement’ fics is right at the moment Dream’s out and facing Hob, and this fic’s rendition was soooo *chef’s kiss.* Also this fic convinced me to read more fics where dreamling’s established before Dream was captured by Burgess. I don’t know why I had that mental block to begin with, but it’s gone now, yay! This fic has been added to my favorite Sandman fics reclist on neocities.

Supernatural

Beware Of The by KKBELVIS. Teen and up, Gen, 25k. Summary: Beware of the what? The Dog? The Cat? Bigfoot? A dragon? Whatever the danger is…Sammy's gotten himself into it and Dean is in full-on big brother mode https://www.fanfiction.net/s/8811600 My thoughts: the antagonist in this story was a sympathetic monster, Sam's favorite, so the Sam whump was not just excellent, it was angsty too. Dean to the rescue is always so satisfying, the angry worrying, the quippy bravado, his possessive+protective side coming out full tilt and then the soft moments. I am very happy with this fic! This fic was added to my gen casefics reclist.

To preface this, hello! My name is Chiffon or Neil, and I am a writer, currently working on writing a YA fiction novel. I have been writing for many years, and have taken a multitude of classes both in and out of school. Once I am a legal adult, I plan on publishing a poetry compilation and hopefully multiple fiction books in the future. This is technically an opinion piece, but I will be delving deep into why you cannot try to ignore this issue by just saying "thats just ur opinion let ppl believe what they wanna believe". Now, time for the "opinion piece". In this essay, when I am talking about fanfiction, I am more specifically talking about fics that are not breaking the boundaries of who it is being written about, and is 10,000 words or more. However, all writing (excluding certain circumstances) is art in my opinion.

I am very frustrated by people constantly trying to state that "fanfictions are not real books," because... it's not that simple.

Fanfiction is a type of writing, and therefore, even if it’s unpublished or even not directly called a "book", and instead a "long-form writing" or a similar title, it falls directly in the same category.

Fanfiction typically can have hundreds of thousands, even millions of words, so that is the first box it checks; many professional, published novels can have 50,000 words or less.

Another box it checks is: if the fanfiction could be easily published professionally by just changing the characters' names and maybe their personalities a bit (see; 50 Shades of Gray), it should most definitely fall under the category of 'book'.

Before you say "well, most fanfiction is romance and smut so that makes it not a type of book," one, that is demeaning the art of writing, and two... Have you never heard of published romance novels? Have you not seen BookTok (I cannot believe I'm mentioning them) ranting and raving over books like Icebreaker? Currently, Icebreaker, written by Hannah Grace, which has multiple circumstances of sexual scenes and intimacy between the characters, has sold over a million copies. It's frequently seen in bookstores nation-wide and has thousands of five-star reviews. So, that disproves another argument.

Another issue with this opinion is, often, fanfiction is much more influential than published books (although more on the emotional and individual side of things due to less publicity than professionally-published books).

Also, the OP is not the sole decider of what is and what is not designated as an 'important' form of writing. And, from what I can tell, she has no obvious experience as a fiction writer from first glance. Admittedly, she could be an experienced writer, and if she is, I apologise for the assumption, but from my perspective, she seems to only read writings, not write them. I am writing this piece as though she is only a reader.

This is an issue because, yes, this opinion of "fanfiction isn't book" is just an opinion... But it's a harmful one, because it very clearly implies "fanfiction isn't real writing"... which is the most dreadful concept I have personally ever heard related to writing as an art form.

The OP, alongside many other Tumblr users (including me in the past) are or was a part of the DSMP fanbase (don't scroll I'm going somewhere with this). The fandom was especially popular during the years of 2020 - early 2022. A primary part of its fanbase was made up of fanfiction writers; great ones at that.

While there are thousands of well-written fanfics involving characters from the popular Minecraft server, for this specific situation, I will focus on one of the most well-known ones (no it's not heatwaves).

Passerine, by AO3 user blujamas.

Passerine is a seven-chapter fanfic that has exactly 76,373 words (for context, The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemingway has 67,707 words). It was extremely popular in the fandom for its gorgeous writing, its complex plot, and most importantly; the way it impacted readers.

While those who were a fan of the DSMP were heavily affected by it, anyone, no matter if they had or had not heard of the media it was based off of, could feel very strongly about the characters and the trials and triumphs (though triumphs may be few and far between) they go through.

The fic guided readers through a simple, yet content life between a family of royals in a happy kingdom in the distant past. It showed the children and the adults both as they grew up, though bringing a slight taste of grief to the readers, almost in preparation for what was to come.

As both parents would leave, though one was out of her control, it left the children to fend for themselves.

They stuck together, despite everything.

But as you read through the story, it consistently brings you hope, a chance for happiness, before stabbing it to death directly in front of you, leaving you almost numb with the pain you feel for these fictional protagonists.

Due to the beautiful, clever writing and the way it brought severe emotions to the reader with every word, it gained serious traction in the fandom, and it currently stands with 3,248,752 views (known as 'hits' on AO3) and 88,251 likes (known as 'kudos' on AO3).

Now, as you think about the popularity, impact, and talent within the fanfic itself; do you still think it does not count as "real" fiction? If Passerine could potentially be published just by changing characters around a bit- would you think the same?

Now, imagine a Shakespearian work; let's say... Romeo and Juliet, for example. If that never existed as a published work, and was instead a fanfic on AO3 that was exactly the same, save for it being written with modern language and terms.

Would it still count as the masterpiece the world sees it as now? Or would it be cast aside as a "wannabe-book" that only fake readers take a glance at? (also, fake readers aren't real??)

To put fanfiction, a popular outlet for writers to put their heart and soul into, into a box that reads on the outside "NOT REAL" and "NOT VALID"... well, that sounds more negative than positive, to say the least.

I believe that only those who have tried writing a fanfic or book before can give a genuine, serious opinion on this, because from the looks of it... some readers don't realise how much effort goes into the pages and the fics they read everyday.

Fanfictions are books. Trying to say otherwise is undermining and demeaning the time and effort put into those works.

Sorry it took me a few days to respond I got swamped with uni work (swamped meaning I neglected my assignments in favor of reading bbh fics and being on twitter and then school caught up with me) but GOD talking with you is so nice, you're saying everything I've been thinking recently about fics T^T I know exactly what vibe of fics you're talking about, those kinds of fics stay with me and affect me for a while because of how good the writing is, "real stories" is a great way to describe it. I love those ugh I'm not kidding I've been thinking in my mind for like a year or two that I wish people would write some of those kinds of beautiful fics for bbh on here again. I pretty much gave up hope though because exo tumblr writers in general are few and far between, and exo tumblr writers who do series or longer works are pretty much non existent nowadays.. And I feel like these kinds of fics aren't usually requested, more like the authors just come up with the idea for it, at least I think? Anyway hearing you say that you're planning on doing that kind of special gorgeous/longer/ao3 type fic for baekhyun literally made my entire year ngl :') I'm definitely looking forward to whenever you post them!!!!! Like so so much!!!!!!!!!! I'm sure I'll eat it right up. Finally some good fucking food for bbh fans LOL you're doing god's work fr fr ily.. Omg I have a rule of not reading incomplete fics too because if an author discontinues a fic or goes MIA it's too much for my poor heart ahah also I try not to read long fics that end in heartbreak/angst. I get too depressed like let me be happy and end up with my kyoongie baby pls omg... I read felon two years ago by accident because I saw it had so many parts so I thought it was complete so I read it OTL it's so incredible though so I can't even mind that it's without updates. I believe the author said last fall that she wanted to finish it before the end of 2022, so maybe hopefully we'll get an update this year instead, I'm manifesting it!

Clutch Start Halfway Up the Hill - Hope this will be a series one day. It’s still new enough I don’t have much to reflect on other than I love wo describe webbedsites 

Camellias for Carmella - Fun to write, but it required a lot of bouncing between actual episodes and my fic. I like Carmelle what can i say? Hanahaki is not a trope i will write again because i think this fic would have been better without it. 

The End of Summer (Now I Know) - damn ok this fic kinda flopped but to be expected when writing from the first person perspective. Looking back, it’s not very good. I don’t think it could have been better per say, I just think that the concept was not that strong. Again, a lot of episode re-write elements here, and bouncing between episodes. I also forgot to put the quote from Robert about fireworks in the a03 release :/ 

Paul and Izzy Have an Affair (How to Prepare a Heart for Eating) - My favourite story I wrote this year, and also my only Neighbours fic not from Elle’s perspective. I loved writing this, every salacious second. I love re-reading it. Maybe even my favourite fic I’ve ever written honestly. Pizzy forever. 

Like Prometheus in the Morning I’m Bound to Come Around - It’s a bit purple, I wish I’d done another pass over the Andrew section honestly. 

Come Elle or Highwater - Written for Small Fandom Bang 2021/2022. I was so proud of it when I wrote it but I go back and fourth on some elements of it now. Ultimately I think I’m still happy with it.

Turkey Shoot - Not my only TDBM fic but damn close. Actually a repurposed WIP i bent to fit my idea. It’s okay, but not as complex or interesting as my fics for other fandoms 

A Good Old Fashioned Beat Down - Unfinished whump Challenge fic. Not much to say. It’s fine, if you like that sort of thing as much as I like to write it.

He really had zero interest in Sensate or whatever the hell its name was, but your animated gestures as you recalled every plot point and twist made him nod and gasp at all the right times like it was the most fascinating thing he’d ever heard of, just to keep you talking.

What would he have even said though? Hey, these words you’re saying mean nothing to me but I like the sound of your voice and how cute you look all nerdy and excited about this thing that I really don’t give a shit about. It was endearing to see you slowly welcome him in, to grant him the privilege of knowing you like this.

The night of your third date was also when he kissed you for the first time (not that he didn’t want to woo you breathless the first two times you hung out alone). Your hand was intertwined with his as you were strolling through a small park on the way back to your apartment. A bag of cotton candy was passed between the two of you as you walked, the confectionary barely sweeter than the contentment that filled your chest. Just as you were about to launch into another theory about the show, Jungkook snatched the bag from your hand and turned to face you. A tattooed hand cupped your cheek.

“Can I kiss you?” He asked, his eyes already locking on what they wanted. Jungkook watched your lips part in surprise, then closed when you gulped, only to open again to let an Okay slip out.

When he pressed his lips against yours, you tasted like sugar. And when his tongue slipped into your mouth, you tasted even sweeter. It wasn’t needy and rushed like he was used to. He felt you thread your fingers through his hair as your lips moved in tandem with his. This is nice, Jungkook thought.

The cotton candy dropped to the ground as his other hand came up to wrap around your waist, pulling you into him. He was tonguing you in the middle of an empty park but it felt more intimate than dirty. For the first time—or really, the third time—Jungkook just wanted you. To be in your comforting presence, to hear you talk about nerdy shit you were into, to feel your lips on his. For a split second, he wondered what it would be like to call you his and found that he rather liked the idea of that.

I think it's so endearing that First gets emotional/cries so easily and will sometimes put a stop to sentimental things before he ends up crying.

My longass thread of Khao taking care of or helping First because of his injured arm. It’s sooo important and pleasant to me when people just casually are helpful and attentive to someone’s needs T.T An NCT J/J fic made me realize it and wow I’ve not been the same since because Jeno quietly looks after Jaemin and just... so arrow to the heart fr (the spring i've been waiting by forlilcrickee). Anyway, Khao helping First with everything is adorable.

I started writing for Bruno because at the time, it was the only Bruno fic that existed outside of a few 300-word oneshots. I wanted to read one, so I wrote one. And it went nuts.

I started writing for Ciaran based on a prompt, and because I adore writing shy, flustered men. But also because I knew there weren’t many fics of him. And I love to help.

It is so intimidating to come into a fandom late like I did (only started playing in Feb 2022). I look at the Bobby tag on AO3 (our fic recs for him are here by the way) and I am terrified by the quality of works in that tag. Like, holy shit. The villa fics. The AUs. The people in that tag are like celebrities to me. Like seriously. Christy_sparkle. Daisybarks. Longbobmckenzie. Ariendiel. I-boop-you. Becangle. Crimswnred. ThatWheelchairChick. Throughthejunobush. Margotmuses. A stupid amount of others whose handles I can’t think of right now.

They’re actually celebrities to me. I can’t believe I call them mates now. They’re all so stupidly talented. And they’ve all written for Bobby.

What could I possibly say about Bobby’s eyes that hasn’t been said before? How do I write a smut scene that feels new and exciting? How do I write about his freckles in a way that doesn’t make me feel like I’m plagiarising?

I would love to write for Bobby. I really would. I adore him as a character, I think he’s one of the most interesting characters I’ve read in years. His background. His personality. But others have done it far better than I ever could. So until I come up with something truly phenomenal, something really unique and new to the character… I don’t see it happening.

I am SUPER proud of this au! I love Greek mythology so I had a lot of fun adapting the myth to the Mando lore and making something very different and creative. It’s a little bit different and I took creative liberties, but I think they worked well. Plus, the moodboard I made for this is one of my all time favorites! And I also have to say that people have been rediscovering this mini series lately and it makes me so happy!! oh, so many. i've got a bunch of fic ideas for a handful of fandoms that i've been circulating in my head for a while now (some for even more than a year) and i hope this is the year i actually get to share them with you all <3

beyond fic though, i also have several ideas for original work that i hope to share more about on my writeblr (@anagnorvices), which you might be seeing more of shortly if all goes well—read: if i can knock my brain into gear

🥳 What writing accomplishment made you most proud?

i don't talk about my personal life much on tumblr, but this past year i've attended a couple writing programs and i truly feel that they were some of the best experiences of my life and have been pretty transformative for me as a writer (not to mention i made some amazing friends <3)

in related news, i've been branching out into poetry a lot more and honestly, i'm pretty happy with a lot of the things i came up with, even if they're not perfect

soooo i guess what i'm trying to say is, i'm most proud of myself for expanding my horizons as a writer :) not necessarily a quantifiable writing accomplishment but eh i think it counts anyways

📈 Were there any recurring trends in your writing? Common themes, tropes, etc.

hmmm, i think just the fact that i wrote a lot of poetry this year counts as a trend haha

i suppose i've been trying to write more about identity, and how that intersects with the Self—what it means to be this or that, or to not be an identity that maybe you feel you should be, or that space of the In-Between; a lot of it's pretty personal to me and centers around family and idk i just think it's neat :]
