Chart Watch: Drake Sets 10 Records on the Billboard charts
(Ross Gilmore/Getty Images)
Drake sets enough records on this week’s Billboard charts to fill out a top 10 list of his own. Take a look:
1. Drake’s “playlist” album, More Life, sets a new record for the most streams generated by an album’s songs in a single week. In the week ending March 23, there were 384.8 million streams of tracks from the album. The old record was held by Drake’s previous release, Views, which launched with 245.1 million song streams last May.
2. It goes without saying that More Life enters the Billboard 200 in the top spot. It’s Drake’s seventh consecutive album to debut at No. 1. All have been released since 2010. Drake leads all artists for most No. 1 albums in this decade. Justin Bieber is the runner-up, having amassed six No. 1 albums since 2010.
3. Drake also pulls ahead of Bieber as the Canadian artist with the most No. 1 albums — not just in this decade but in all of chart history. Michael Buble, Celine Dion, and Neil Young are next in line, with four No. 1 albums each. (Young’s tally includes three albums he recorded with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.)
youtube
4. Drake has 24 songs on this week’s Hot 100, breaking his own record for the most simultaneous songs on the chart. Drake had 20 songs on the Hot 100 dated May 21, 2016, the week that Views debuted at No. 1.
5. Drake also breaks his own record for the most Hot 100 debuts in a week. A total of 21 Drake songs, all from More Life, debut this week. He set the old record when 16 songs from Views debuted in the same week.
6. All 22 tracks from More Life are listed on this week’s Hot 100. That sets a new record for the most simultaneously charted singles from one album. The old record of 18 was held jointly by Views and the Weeknd’s Starboy.
7. Drake has now had 154 Hot 100 hits, which blows past Lil Wayne’s old record of 135 for the most among solo acts. Impressively, Drake has been the lead artist on 103 of his chart hits.
8. Two Drake songs debut inside the top 10 on this week’s Hot 100. “Passionfruit” debuts at No. 8. “Portland” (featuring Quavo of the hip-hop trio Migos and Travis Scott) opens at No. 9. Drake is only the second artist in Hot 100 history to debut inside the top 10 with two songs in the same week. Ed Sheeran achieved the feat in January with “Shape of You” and “Castle on the Hill.”
9. More Life moved 505K “equivalent” units this week, based on Billboard’s formula which combines streaming, traditional sales and digital track sales. That’s the biggest one-week total since Views moved 1,039,000 copies in its first week.
10. More Life has now spawned three top 10 hits on the Hot 100. “Fake Love” reached No. 8 in February. More Life is Drake’s first album to spawn three top 10 hits. Take Care, Nothing Was the Same, and Views each spawned two top 10 hits.
Drake has released just four studio albums, so you might wonder how he can have amassed seven No. 1 albums. Welcome to the modern record world, where an album isn’t necessarily an album. Drake calls More Life a “playlist.” If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late (2015) and What a Time to Be Alive (also 2015, a collabo with Future) were dubbed “mixtapes.”
Top Songs
Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You” logs its ninth week at No. 1 on the Hot 100. That’s the longest run at No. 1 since The Chainsmokers’ “Closer” (featuring Halsey) had 12 weeks on top last year. “Shape of You” sold 97K copies this week, which enables it to hold at No. 1 on Top Digital Songs for the ninth week. That’s the longest run at No. 1 on that chart since “Closer” had 13 weeks on top.
“Shape of You” logs its 11th week at No. 1 on The Official U.K. Singles Chart. That’s the longest run since Drake’s “One Dance” (featuring Wizkid and Kyla) logged 15 weeks on top last year. It’s the longest run by a U.K. lead artist since Wet Wet Wet’s “Love Is All Around” had 15 weeks on top in 1994. Wet Wet Wet is from Scotland. Sheeran is from England. (I specify “lead artist” because Kyla is from the U.K.)
youtube
Sheeran’s 2015 smash “Thinking Out Loud” spent eight straight weeks at No. 2 on the Hot 100, but never reached No. 1. It got stuck behind a monster hit, Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk!” (featuring Bruno Mars), which logged 14 weeks at No. 1. Turnabout is fair play. This time around, Sheeran has the monster No. 1 hit and Mars is playing second fiddle. Mars’ “That’s What I Like” holds at No. 2 for the second week. Unless it moves up a notch, it will become Mars’ first single to peak at No. 2. (The song holds at No. 1 for the second week on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.)
The Zayn/Taylor Swift collabo “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever (Fifty Shades Darker)” rebounds from No. 4 to No. 3 in its 15th week. It peaked at No. 2.
Migos’ “Bad and Boujee” (featuring Lil Uzi Vert) dips from No. 3 to No. 4 in its 19th week. The song logged three weeks at No. 1.
The Weeknd’s “I Feel It Coming” (featuring Daft Punk) holds at No. 5 in its 18th week. It’s the second top five hit on which the two artists have collaborated. “Starboy” reached No. 1 in January.
Kodak Black’s “Tunnel Vision” holds at No. 6 in its fifth week. “Something Just Like This” by The Chainsmokers and Coldplay jumps from No. 8 to No. 7 in its fifth week. The song has climbed as high as No. 5. The Chainsmokers’ other current hit, “Paris,” dips from No. 9 to No. 10 in its 10th week. The song has climbed as high as No. 6.
youtube
Two songs drop out of the top 10 this week. They are Rihanna’s “Love on the Brain” and KYLE’s “iSpy” (featuring Lil Yachty).
Ariana Grande’s “Side to Side” (featuring Nicki Minaj) tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. The risqué song—a “Physical” for the new millennium—reached No. 4 on the Hot 100.
Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston” tops the 2 million mark in digital sales this week. The song “bubbled under” the Hot 100 for a couple of weeks in 2007, but never charted. Which just goes to show you: Charting isn’t everything.

Top Albums
Ed Sheeran’s ÷ dips to No. 2 in its third week. It spent its first two weeks at No. 1. ÷ logs its third week at No. 1 on the Official U.K. Albums Chart.
Rick Ross lands his ninth consecutive top 10 album as Rather You than Me debuts at No. 3.
The soundtrack to the live-action reboot of Disney’s 1991 animated classic Beauty and the Beast dips from No. 3 to No. 4 in its second week. The album is No. 1 on Top Soundtracks for the second week. This equals the showing of the soundtrack from the original Beauty and the Beast, which was the highest-ranking soundtrack on The Billboard 200 for two weeks in early 1992. The reboot, which stars Emma Watson, was No. 1 at the box-office for the second weekend in a row. The original animated film peaked at No. 2 at the box-office.
Depeche Mode’s Spirit debuts at No. 5. It’s the band’s eighth consecutive studio album to reach the top 10, which is its entire output dating to 1990’s Violator. This is the fourth album titled Spirit to crack the top 10. It follows albums by John Denver (No. 7 in September 1976), Earth, Wind & Fire (No. 2 in October 1976) and Leona Lewis (No. 1 in April 2008).
youtube
Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic drops from No. 4 to No. 6 in its 18th week. The album has never ranked lower than No. 7. This surpasses Mars’ sophomore album, Unorthodox Jukebox, which spent its first 17 weeks in the top 10, but dropped out in its 18th week (though it later returned to the top 10 to fatten its total.) 24K Magic logged four weeks at No. 2.
The Moana soundtrack drops from No. 5 to No. 7 in its 18th week. The album peaked at No. 2.
Future’s Future drops from No. 6 to No. 8 in its fifth week. The album debuted at No. 1.
The Weeknd’s Starboy drops from No. 7 to No. 9 in its 17th week. The album spent five non-consecutive weeks at No. 1.
Migos’ Culture drops from No. 8 to No. 10 in its eighth week. The album debuted at No. 1.
Three albums drop out of the top 10 this week. Metallica’s Hardwired…to Self-Destruct dives from No. 2 to No. 19. Future’s HNDRXX drops from No. 9 to No. 12. The Trolls soundtrack drops from No. 10 to No. 13.
Pitbull’s Climate Change debuts at No. 29. It’s Pitbull’s second album with an ecologically-minded title. It follows 2012’s Global Warming. I don’t know if Pitbull will ever win another Grammy, but maybe he’ll get an award from Greenpeace.
youtube
Keith Urban’s Ripcord rebounds from No. 35 to No. 30 in its 46th week. The album returns to No. 1 on Top Country Albums, displacing Josh Turner’s Deep South. This is the third week on top of the country chart for Ripcord.
Chuck Berry’s 2005 compilation The Definitive Collection enters the chart at No. 33 in the wake of his death on March 18. The album is No. 1 on Top Catalog Albums, displacing Ed Sheeran’s x.
Look for Trey Songz’s Tremaine and Mike WiLL Made-It’s Ransom 2 to be next week’s top new albums.

My MatchaBlossom playlist
Here's the link to the playlist on Spotify-
Song meanings and POVs elaborated on down under.
Call it what you want- Taylor Swift
(Let's start with a TS song cause why tf not. I am and always will be a total slut for her 💜)
Okay, just the general vibe of this song is that of a person who's been through a bit and has now found a love so beautiful it's helping them heal and I feel like that ties in so well with Cherry and Joe's entire arc. I hear this song in Cherry's POV when Joe's affection is starting to restore his faith in love and life after Adam's done fucked it all up. Or even when his anxiety gets really fucking bad or whatever. It's just got big comfort vibes and I am a total whore for Cherry acknowledging and appreciating everything that Joe does for him.
All my flowers grew back as thorns,
Windows boarded up after the storm,
He built a fire just to keep me warm.
Explosion- Zolita
PINING JOE PINING JOE PINING JOE
*ahem* let me be more articulate.
TEENAGED PINING JOE
Don't call me about him I don't wanna hear
Put him out of your mind just make him disappear
Stop pretending you got nothing left to hide
My memory is slipping and it's killing me alive
Reached the bitter end
Can't pretend I'm not in love with my best friend, my best friend
Hate that you know me- BLEACHERS
Okay I think this song fits Cherry very well, especially when he is still trying to understand his dynamic with Joe. My personal headcanon is that Cherry is prone to bouts of self-hatred because of his anxiety and consequently, doesn't always consider himself deserving of Joe's love, and so, he tends to dislike it at times when Joe seems to understand him better than others and anticipate his needs so well, and I feel like this song depicts that beautifully.
Sometimes I hate that you know me so well (so well)
Sometimes I, I hate that you know me so well (and I hate ya)
Some days I, I wish that I wasn't myself (No)
No luck! (No)
And I hate that you know me so well
Heart attack- Demi Lovato
Okay, I can not be the only person who thinks of teenaged Cherry every time this song comes on. Imagine a Cherry who's flabbergasted by the strength of his feelings for Joe, and can never figure out what to do with himself.
Never break a sweat for the other guys
When you come around, I get paralyzed
And every time I try to be myself
It comes out wrong like a cry for help
It's just not fair; pain's more trouble than love is worth
I gasp for air; it feels so good, but you know it hurts
Lover- Taylor Swift
I have a very specific scene in mind when it comes to this song and that is MatchaBlossom slow-dancing in the first house they get together.
We could let our friends crash in the living room
This is our place, we make the call
And I'm highly suspicious that everyone who sees you wants you
I've loved you three summers now, honey, but I want 'em all
Make you mine- PUBLIC
You knew this song was going to end up on here lol.
Strangely enough, aware as I am of the fact that most of the fandom believes Joe was the one chasing Cherry (and I agree) this song just hits me as all Cherry's. It has all of his characteristic dogged determination and refusal to admit defeat lol
Well, I have called you darlin' and I'll say it again, again
So kiss me 'til I'm sorry, babe, that you are gone and I'm a mess
And I'll hurt you and you'll hurt me and we'll say things we can't repeat
Mess is Mine- Vance Joy
Slightly older, mellowed out MatchaBlossom, starting to realise they're in this together for the long run, that they always have been.
Further I feel like verse 1 and 2 respectively follow Joe and Cherry's POVs
First we have Joe, who is just brimming with the realisation that Cherry is his for good.
Talking like we used to do
It was always me and you
Shaken up and shipping out
Check me in and check me out
...
Hold on my darling
This mess was yours, now your mess is mine
Secondly, we have Cherry, who considers himself unbelievably lucky to have been considered worthy of Joe's love and keeps wondering if he is half as good a partner to the other man as he is to him.
See you in the market place
Walking around at 8 AM
Got two hours before my flight
Luck be on my side tonight
You're the reason that I feel so strong
The reason that I'm hanging on
You know you gave me all that time
Did I give enough of mine
More than Friends- BEKA HONNE
Baby MatchaBlossom pining. Really sweet, soft vibes. I keep thinking of shy, unsure junior high school Kaoru and Kojiro suddenly becoming blushing, stuttering messes around each other for a period of time as they both hit the realisation that they'd very much like to be kissing each other and it's very much not a Friend™ thing.
It happens after Joe has freshly realised that he is bi after all and Kaoru is exactly what he needs. Again, verse one reminds me of Joe, verse two of Cherry. They are down under respectively.
Driving home and those cats eyes got me seeing you
I'm always seeing you
I don't know how to tell you that I was wrong before
I thought I needed more
I was wondering if we could talk
I think about you every day
And the mixtape you made
Is all I ever to play
And every song reminds me that
You and I
Should be more than friends
...
I never thought I would see your face at my door again
Not at 3 AM
And I don't know just why I wasn't enough before
I thought you needed more
I know you came here to talk
Can't listen to the tape I made
It brings me too much pain
Cause every song reminds me that
You and I
Should be more than friends
This song can also work if you reverse the POV orders and then see it post Adam, but the vibe is a lil too soft for that.
Night go slow- Catey Shaw
MatchaBlossom but in a chill, lo-fi aesthetic.
The cars all stop where they are
When you take my hand, there is no time
Every moment that passes by with you
I wish I could rewind
Let go of your ways
And forget today
Just follow me tonight
Do you understand why I put all my plans on hold?
Not Afraid Anymore- Halsey
Okay, this one goes a lil heavy but imagine a traumatised Cherry, ya know after Ad*m, finally learning to let himself go and feel things again, emotionally and sexually, with Kojiro.
I also feel like they are two kinky bastards so really if you only wanna interpret it like that be my guest.
I am not ashamed anymore
I want something so impure
You better impress now, watching my dress now fall to the floor
Crawling underneath my skin, sweet talk with a hint of sin
Begging you to take me
Devil underneath your grin, sweet thing
But she play to win, heaven gonna hate me
People Crying Every Night- A R I Z O N A
I hear this song as Joe trying to get through to a hesitant Cherry, trying to make him see that while they don't get a say in so many other things, things that have happened and things that will happen, they get to choose the life they have together. They get to pick out their happy ending, build one out of scratch with each other and even if they have nothing else, at least they have this.
Oh and as the day
Turns into night
The things that we can't say
The things we try to hide
Like everyone else
We can't choose the way we die
Oh but we can choose
The way we live tonight
Oh I wish I had the answers
I wish I had the time
To give you all the reasons
Why it's worth it down the line
Ready to go- NEFFEX
This song is an ✨ aesthetic ✨
Okay but imagine, young, punk! MatchaBlossom, maybe around the time when they're travelling the world together?
It's all hot and heady, and Joe is thrilled by the wild, wild force of nature Kaoru is. He can't do anything but give in.
She said stay for a minute
Play with my limits
Drink till we're sinnin'
Baby I'm ready to go
...
She said she's finally alive
When she starts losing control
I said I know what to do
Just let our bodies go
Shine a Light- BANNERS
Another Kojiro song. This one reflects his inner struggle as he feels torn between wanting to comfort and protect Cherry after Adam, and the fact that he is hopelessly in love with Cherry who inadvertently keeps hurting him with how he is lost in the huge web of feelings he can't parse through, not completely blind to how much Kojiro loves him but not fully realising it either. This song reminds me of a confused and helpless Kojiro. Loving Kaoru is such an integral part of him that it makes him, him and it is his constant in the rapidly changing world around him as he stands on the brink of adulthood. He is very nearly ready to beg for mercy and yet knows he, himself is saved by the love he has for Kaoru.
And when the night falls, oh, call on me
Just don't forget to show me some mercy
Ooh, say you're mine
Ooh, take me higher
Sleepover- Hayley Kiyoko
JOE PINING @ HOMOEROTIC SLEEPOVERS WITH YOUR B(est)F
You wanna be friends forever?
I can think of something better
I'm just feeling low, feeling low
Sleeping here right next to me
But will you ever mess with me?
No
Thank you, my twilight- the pillows
Listen, this has been my fav classic Japanese love anthem for so long and to think it is PERFECT for Matchablossom just makes my heart go 💞
The lyrics are heart-wrenchingly raw and real, which is great reflection of Joe and Cherry's relationship. I include a translation of a few verses below, the first one seems something snatched straight out of Joe's internal monologues and the second one depicts the breathless intensity and loyalty so typical of Kaoru:
If you think it looks like I'm waiting for someone
Then you're right
I've been waiting for you
...
Sometimes people will ask me
"How far will you go for her?"
BABY as far as it takes
Wings- HAERTS
Another song depicting Cherry healing from Adam and learning to accept Joe's love, but a fluffier and sweeter way to go about it.
In which, Cherry decides to separate all of the sweeter moments of his and Joe's days with Adam from all of the bitterness, and carry that in his heart after they part ways and he finally moves on.
I will never let you go
I know you want it, know you want it
Learning love means not to know
I'll learn to take it,
Would you mind- PRETTYMUCH
Ending this post with a fluffy, flirty rec that could be Joe's anthem. See for yourselves.
Say you don't catch feelings, you say you ain't the love type
I'ma have to work, then, uh the whole night
Nothing like your ex, no, this ain't what you used to
Just give me that chance, girl, uh, won't lose you
See it? ;) Also, I feel like Joe had typical frat boy taste in music at some point so

Katy Perry, Desiigner & More Are Spotify Editors' Picks for New Music Friday
Katy Perry, Desiigner & More Are Spotify Editors' Picks for New Music Friday
Every week, Spotify updates their “New Music Friday” playlist, featuring 50 of the freshest new tracks hitting the service that week.
On the heels of Billboard‘s partnership with the streaming giant, we’ll be tapping Spotify’s editors to sift through the soon-to-be-hits and highlight the best of the bunch.
Check out the picks and listen to the entire “New Music Friday” playlist below.
Katy Perry – “Chained To The Rhythm” ft. Skip Marley
At this point, Katy Perry knows us all too well. With today’s release of the superstar singer’s new single, “Chained to the Rhythm,” the 32-year-old not only makes her overdue return to the top of our playlists but humbly reminds us that she’s long been a fan-favorite for a valid reason, singing, “Turn it up, it’s your favorite song / Dance, dance, dance to the distortion.” While that foreshadowing line may be a safe bet given Perry’s impeccable past success, even in the song’s first initial run-throughs, its potential to be the next major earworm is undeniable. While Perry is warming up for a 2017 takeover, starting with her recently confirmed performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards this weekend, she chose to debut the song in an epic fashion, literally scattering speakers masquerading as disco balls all over the world, inviting fans to participate in a scavenger hunt to seek out her latest tune. “Chained to the Rhythm” enlists a guest feature from Bob Marley‘s grandson, Skip, who made his debut on our #SpotifyNMF playlist just last week. Much like his new single “Lions,” the collaborative track holds a strong-but-subtle political message woven into it, simultaneously inspiring us all to do better and rise above what is looking to tear us down. As Perry readies her first studio album since 2013’s Prism, it’s clear she’s not holding anything back this year, proudly declaring, “We gonna call this era Purposeful Pop.”
Migos – Spotify Singles
While Atlanta may have had the upset of the year with last weekend’s unpredictably theatrical Super Bowl outcome, Migos is here to save the day. As the rap group continues to hold it down as ambassadors of the culture enjoying the recent fruits of their labor, recently releasing their second studio album, the reigning champs stopped by Spotify’s New York headquarters to bless the studio with their signature lavish trap sound and have some fun in the process. Although their album, Culture, debuted at the number one slot on the Billboard charts, the group stays on their grind, even creating a brand new single that doubles as an ode to their recent collaboration with hip-hop’s favorite snack food company, Rap Snacks. For their own special edition bags of potato chips, the group went with a sour cream flavor, aptly naming their catchy new track, “Dab of Ranch,” after their own Rap Snacks’ branding. After the group posted a viral video of themselves freestyling about the fact they now have their own chip, the next logical step naturally was to lay it down in the studio. During the Spotify session, the group’s members go back and forth creating what feels like an unlikely love story, with the lyrics playing into the theme brilliantly, with lines such as “Money like bags of chips / hunnits of bags I flip / finger-licking with the ranch / leaving crumbs on your lips,” and “Get your rap snacks with a dab of ranch / If there ain’t no more call the ambulance” the song is surprisingly (or not-so-surprisingly) incredibly well-written and full of personality, not straying far from Migos’ traditional bangers. In fact, this one can arguably hold its own weight in the club, proving not everyone can pull off a potato chip tribute quite like the Migos can. Rounding out their session with a unique rendition of their track, “T-Shirt,” the Atlanta heavyweights continue to secure their sky’s-the-limit legacy.
Adam Friedman – “What If”
Adam Friedman has been wisely preparing for the very stage his career in music has now arrived to for ages. While many artists are eager to release their music into the world the exact second an engineer sends back the master, this emerging singer-songwriter has opted to forge his own path. After graduating from the Berklee College of Music in 2014, Friedman headed straight to the studio, where he worked on Mike Posner‘s second studio album At Night, Alone, while also creating the original song score for an animated feature film Rock Dog, going on to become the singing voice of the main character, who was played by Luke Wilson. After staying busy with these endeavors, Friedman released his debut single into the wild, with “Pretty Things” going on to debut at #10 on Spotify’s Global Viral Chart. Now that he’s gotten his feet wet, it’s just the beginning, with the LA-based musician today releasing his debut EP, Green. While the 5-track collection features two singles that may sound familiar, his celebrated collaboration with Mike Posner “Lemonade,” a track that has since impressively racked up over 6 million streams as well as his lead single, “Sad,” the other tracks on the project serve as an exciting reminder that Friedman is slowly and steadily making his way onto everyone’s radar. With “What If,” Friedman’s opening vocals are perfect for a pensive reflection, as he wonders what would have happened if things with someone who had caught his eye went a little bit differently. The ambience of the song then erupts into warm electronic production full of pan flute-esque synths and a delectable variety of drums, swirling with inevitable sing-along moments proving that Friedman’s ability to borrow elements from pop and dance music alike continues to work in his favor.
Desiigner – “Outlet”
While 2016 put Desiigner on the map in a permanent way with the release of his platinum singles “Panda” and “Timmy Turner,” this year finds the rapper on a whole new level but chasing after the same goals. The 19-year-old is wasting no time getting back down to business after enjoying the breakout success he’s now received his first heavy heaping of, recently announcing a six-week U.S. tour to kick off in April. Not only that but he also followed up the exciting news with a fresh new single, “Outlet,” a song that shares the same name as the 25-city tour run and gives fans a taste of the new material the G.O.O.D. music emcee has been cooking up for his highly anticipated Def Jam debut, The Life of Desiigner. On the new track, the Brooklyn native navigates less-familiar territory, straying a bit from the patterns used in his previous singles, while tactfully weaving in his signature chirps, buttery rhyme-singing and braggadocios battle cries. While the song interestingly enough doesn’t feature the word “outlet,” the song doubles as a reminder that the reputedly high energy Desiigner is still charged up and ready to go. While discussing the new single, Desiigner naturally is already looking toward the bigger picture, using his new music as fuel to get him to where he wants to go next, even thinking as ambitiously as an astronaut. “I got millions and trillions, I’m here to entertain,” he recently declared. “If I gotta get to the next planet and it’s the first ship going up there and it’s a performance, I want to do that. You feel me? So I’m trying to just be everywhere man, just be everywhere.” With “Outlet” the first reveal of what Desiigner has on deck, it’s without a doubt that while the rapper may have a long ways to go until he reaches his out-of-this-world aspiration, he certainly is heading in the right direction.
Fifty Shades Darker – Official Soundtrack
With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, today’s timely release of the second installment of the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise is making sure that regardless of how one may feel about the hallmark holiday, the film’s soundtrack is here for the die-hard romantics and the reluctant population alike. As the best-selling book series went on to takeover the big screen, with Fifty Shades of Grey and now Fifty Shades Darker, it’s only fitting that the accompanying soundtrack is full of major players, unlikely collaborations and as much sex appeal as the erotic romance tale itself exudes. While the film’s first soundtrack birthed some of 2015’s most sultry anthems, including The Weeknd‘s “Earned It” and Ellie Goulding‘s “Love Me Like You Do,” this year’s collection appears to hold just as much promise as its predecessor. As recently featured on #SpotifyNMF, Taylor Swift and Zayn‘s collaboration “I Don’t Wanna Live Forever,” has already racked up an impressive 175M plays on Spotify, with Halsey‘s offering “Not Afraid Anymore,” gliding past 6M, building anticipation to see what else the star-studded collection has in store. With songs from John Legend, Tove Lo, Sia, Kygo, The-Dream, Nick Jonas, Nicki Minaj and more, Fifty Shades Darker covers a lot of ground, both in both the lyrical sense and genre-wise. With songs ranging from tropical house-tinged tracks to piano-led ballads to sinister pop, the soundtrack explores an overall theme of lust, with each track tackling a new interpretation of the complicated emotion and experience. While the film’s at-times controversial plot is a bit more dark than the content of its soundtrack may be, Fifty Shades Darker is poised to dominate theaters and the airwaves alike this weekend and then some, with the conversations surrounding the cultural phenomenon destined to continue well past its debut opening.
