was watching a clip from tale of two stans that had vietnamese captions- and i'm not sure if this was an official translation or a mistranslation or anything- but i noticed something really interesting !!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ford consistently calls stanley "anh," while stanley calls ford "em"
in vietnamese, all of our pronouns are based upon your relationship to the person and the respect you give them.
anh translates to older brother, while em translates to younger sibling
as the older twin, ford should be given the title of "anh," but it is specifically given to stanley here. and it would be one thing if they Both called each other anh or em, or even bạn (which is a neutral 'friend' pronoun)
the rest of the translation is very accurate, so my assumption for this is: stanley has always played the role of "protector" for ford. even within this dialogue, stanley is the one worrying about ford's health and mental state, as well as being the one who is being asked for help. even though it's technically totally incorrect within our grammar rules- stanley is being given the role of "older brother," both by the narrative, and by ford who calls him "anh". meanwhile, ford is in the role of a dependent, a younger brother or friend that needs to be helped.
whether this was a conscious choice by whoever translated this, a mistranslation (probably), or if they just assumed these roles based off the dialogue snippet they were given is just a guess but. i thought this was super interesting !!
