the truth is that a majority of these people traveling to, namely, korea and japan do so because they are in love with this version of the country that doesn’t actually fucking exist. instead of appreciating the culture, they’re turning it into a caricature of what the people and the country actually are. they think they’re getting “in touch” with their idols, or “in touch” with their anime/manga whatever, and they don’t even bother learning the damn language before they rub their fingers all over their “new home” tryna reach for shit that isn’t real

note: this is different than first gen immigrants who have no choice but to move to america w minimal eng speaking abilities, trying to protect their lives & the lives of children/family. i can also guarantee you that int’l transfer students often speak fluent/proficient english before they even bother trying to move to the states for EDUCATION, much less starting a job like some whities who don’t really even want to go into the education field 😃😃

what i want is for nonasians (but specifically white people!) to stop capitalizing off their english speaking abilities and not even bother to get in touch w the country itself, instead of the politically branded image (yes ! kpop is hugely and heavily supported by the korean government) that’s projected to the world

funny thing how most of these white youtubers say they speak little or no korean yet think they can truly live as a korean to appreciate “korean culture” (which involves pan-asian political strifes, economic downturn, financial dependence on hallyu, etc) in korea yet somehow also have a stable job 😃😃funny how they also LOVE LOVE LOVE to mock asian social customs as well, calling them ghastly/beastly, making fun of their food, their cuisine, saying it’s gross when people chew with their mouth open, spit food onto the table, talk or yell loudly while eating, see schoolgirls in their uniforms without sexualizing them or saying “wow they’re so oppressed!” .

people (but whities especially!) can’t pick and choose the good things they like about a country and say they enjoy a country’s culture.

the problem is not white people appreciating and visiting an asian country. the issue is white people settling down and refusing to acknowledge the reason why they’re here is because of fetishism while simultaneously ignoring the fact that they benefit greatly off their white privilege. they don’t go there to be part of the culture. they go there so they can continue living a comfortable english speaking lifestyle while consuming content that’s grossly inaccurate to the lives of normal asian citizens.

I wanted to write a nice thought out post about my teaching experience. To give insight and clarity for myself and I guess whoever reads this. but I’m finding it hard to find the words that describe the job i’ve had for the past 10 months. If you look back through my blog posts, you’ll notice there aren’t many about my job or the day to day things in Thailand. Mostly because after a while work and life in my small town became routine and the most exciting and picture worthy things came from my trips around Thailand and Southeast Asia.

But also because I didn’t like teaching that much. Its hard to explain how I feel about it because its the reason I live in Thailand which I love, but the teaching English, at university with its abundance of bureaucratic nonsense and challenging cultural differences is something else. Maybe I can think of it as; I wanted to live abroad somewhere, and I needed a job, so thats how I ended up teaching. It was never really a career goal of mine, but I enjoyed learning in college so I was like hmm maybe this will have a similar feeling. not quite.

My living situation was another reason my experience was a little murky. I lived in a studio dorm room, that never seemed to be clean. forever dusty and humid (I had to pay for utilities and AC can get expensive). with pale lime green walls and no sink besides the one in my bathroom, theres nothing like living in subpar dorms with your students living next door and down the hall.

I spruced it up a bit with decorations and incense but that still didn’t stop the mold from growing on my clothes or the overall caged feeling of space. sigh. a whole new found appreciation for clean and comfy spaces.

Despite my feelings toward my job, I did the best I could with everything and anything. I thankfully had an amazing group of friends who were teaching with me and we were all mostly in same boat about the experience and the feels. I spent most of my time sitting at a desk or around campus as a prop. basically for the school to advertise look we have foreign teachers! but my actual responsibilities and impact seemed pretty small.

Its interesting because, the Thai co-teachers, always complemented my teaching skills, adaptability and ability to get students to pay attention. I was asked to extend my contract and become a real faculty member but I politely declined, saying that it was time for something new. Im thankful that they were happy and satisfied with my performance, but something on my end was missing.

I also had my uphill battles with classroom management ie. teaching to students who didn’t want to be there, nor knew/understood enough english to have a native speaker as a teacher, who came in late or not at all. aka the class from hell made it really hard to see sliver linings somedays.

But not all of it was a rain cloud, along with this really difficult class, I had 2 other amazing ones, who showed up on time, with their books ( its the little things). paid attention, and did their best to engage with me, my energy and satisfaction of my job was high. Also the English camps, where we got paid extra to teach language intensive seminars was sometimes a nice change of pace.

Outside the class room, the other thai english teachers, were happy to have us, as we helped them with their english pronunciation, writing and overall understanding of western culture. I love education and learning but I can’t say that English teacher is the kind of job that I want. However I am so so so grateful for the experience, the places I’ve been able to go, the people that Ive met, and how much I really learned about myself. thank you Rajamangala University of Technology Thanyaburi for errthang.
