In Soda’s defense — generally, okay — only maybe fifty percent of the times he pisses Darry off is it ever actually on purpose. Or maybe sixty. Definitely no more than seventy, though.

And — in Soda’s defense tonight specifically, okay, he couldn’t just leave her there. Sodapop is a good person at heart, damnit, and it’s in his blood to want to help people out whenever he can — so long as it ain’t monetarily, ‘cause he doesn’t have an extra penny to spend these days.

Still, he couldn’t leave the poor thing out in the cold. It’s late November in Tulsa, and last week was the first snowfall of the year — the roads are full of muck, and the temperatures are nearly freezing, and the bitter snow that’s blanketed their side of town ain’t nothin’ something this tiny should have to be out in.
