Thought about this while sick in bed but even after Jecka and Nicole have lived together for years, Nicole can't deal with the newfound stability very well (despite that small part of her that's relieved to finally have it) and ends up trying to sabotage it by acting out a lot, especially towards Jecka.
Inside she hates it, but she thinks it'll make things easier if Jecka hates her and throws her out rather than outright hurting her. On the other hand, Jecka has been trying to be patient as much as she can and deals with all of Nicole's bullshit in every possible form. She yells at her? Okay. She doesn't bother doing half of her share in their living space? That can be excusable. She'll put up with it for as long as she can until Nicole gets better. After all, she says she's been trying to get better--even if Nicole still thinks therapy is bullshit.
But then one day, Jecka gets fed up with Nicole--calls her out on her bullshit and even tells her she's not "trying hard enough" to get better. Jecka immediately regrets what she says, but she's only human too. Problem is, it's what pushes Nicole to finally have the excuse to just leave.
So, she does.
Jecka tries to chase after her, but Nicole tells her to fuck off and she doesn't see her after that. All Jecka hopes for is that this is just what Nicole needs. Time to cool off. Then she'll be back in the evening. Right?
Nicole doesn't come home that night, nor the next night, and Jecka is freaking out. She's hoping that maybe Nicole just went somewhere and is squatting there now. But then she receives an unknown call from somewhere. It's the hospital. They've told her that she was listed as Nicole's emergency contact and that she's miraculously survived from an overdose (debating between various types of opioids).
When Jecka arrives at the hospital, she's afraid of what Nicole will say to her. Will she be angry for abandoning her? Will she just tell her to get out and leave her alone? Will she just see a comatose Nicole who may or may not survive and it's something that Jecka will have to live with? That it's her fault why her friend ended up this way?
In reality, Jecka is mostly mad at herself for not trying hard enough to be more patient with Nicole. And also mad at herself for not trying harder to go look for her after Nicole ran off.
So, she enters the room Nicole is in and she's not there. Well, that's what Jecka thinks until she hears vomiting sounds in the bathroom. When Nicole comes out of the bathroom, she's surprised to see Jecka there. She's surprised she even had anyone visit her in the hospital at all.
They're both silent at first. Jecka is just sitting at Nicole's bedside while tending to her, while Nicole is just letting her do her thing.
After some moments of silence, Jecka apologizes for what she said, and asks Nicole to come back to the apartment. She's expecting every possible response thrown at her--insults, blame, refusal to come back, etc. But Jecka forgot to expect Nicole to just not say anything. It's not that she doesn't want to, but after a few minutes, Nicole is struggling to say anything and she also seems to be zoning out a lot. This probably should've been expected after recently O'Ding.
Instead of making her say anything, Jecka just hugs Nicole and tells her she can always come back home. Nicole still doesn't say anything. She just hugs Jecka back, burying her face in her neck.
