Aight as someone who spent the last two days watching She-Ra let’s talk about it because it’s a great show! Absolutely enjoyable for young and old alike! (Obviously major spoiler warnings under the cut):

I’m going to get the negative stuff out of the way first so we can focus on the positives so:

Negatives

Because I a lot of hype over how gay this show would be, I was disappointed when Spinerella and Netossa were introduced quickly early on only to literally not be seen until the last (or second to last?) episode. The fact that they are always standing next to each other/linking elbows and one time Spinerella calls Netossa “darling” are all we have textually to prove they’re in a relationship. And I’d heard it was canon that Bow has two dads. Well, you wouldn’t know it by watching the show. Maybe they’ll be in later seasons.

That said in the prom scene, multiple wlw and mlm couples are seen in the background, and Adora dances with not one boy, so that’s nice. Catra’s suit is very gay. The show doesn’t suffer from the same desperate “no homo” imperative as others. However, I think Seahawk and Mermista’s relationship is uncomfortable and weird and teetering on aggressively hetero.

Perfuma’s people needing to learn to fight for themselves was confusing for me. (Plus we end up having the same arc with Entrapta’s cooking staff, and like did that need to be rehashed?) I really really don’t know what to think about them coming in a teaching others to stop being passive, but watch for yourself. Maybe you can bring some clarity where I can’t.

Catra’s betrayal of Adora in the She-Ra castle didn’t make sense to me? Like they were leading up to Catra at least running away from the Horde and then decided nah let’s not do that? I honestly thought she was a hologram for a lot of that scene because it seemed so incongruous with where the episode had been taking her up until then. I’m not mad about it, I just hope it’s part of a larger plan for her as a character.

Positive stuff!

The characters are clear from the get-go, their dynamics are interesting and fun to watch. Plus, the animation style is unique and pretty. All-in-all this is a solid first season that starts out like a good ol’ romp and continues into something more complex and dark, but at its heart remains just as optimistic and adventurous.

Catra was far and away the most interesting character in the whole series. She’s complicated and ambitious and her design is super interesting (Scorpia’s too while we’re thinking about it). I also liked her voice acting. Actually, I liked all of their voice acting, though I am confused why the Queen is British but Glimmer isn’t?

The entire prom episode was golden. And they could’ve had Glimmer’s possessiveness of Bow be romantic, but it never was! And that’s great! Girls and boys having rich friendships? Acknowledging that possessiveness is not just a problem in romantic relationships? 

The comedy is weaved into the show pretty well. I personally like when it’s all melded together instead of switching between comedy episode and serious episode.

I really adored Glimmer’s arc. I liked the obstacles they put in front of her and how she overcame them. By the end of the season she feels like she’s grown naturally and is still the same character but better/stronger/with more understanding of herself and the world around her.

Bow being a literal friendship magnet throughout the series? I love it! Also Bow’s love for crop tops. (Also, also, he’s wearing a crop-top looking thing in the bath scene and I choose to interpret that as he’s trans).

I. Love. Scorpia? Positive, friendly, kind of naive, big buff scorpion princess lady? Fantastic!

Entrapta is cool and 100% definitely neurodiverse and for once a character with hair powers doesn’t creep me the fuck out (even though I guess she’s supposed to be creepy? IDK I found her quirky and lovable).

Hopes for the future

Entrapta stops working with the Horde. It’d be best if she’d just been using them the whole time to research how to upgrade the Princess Alliance’s tech/abilities, but I’m also okay with her realizing Catra had just been manipulating her after her friends find out she’s alive and come to save her.

The queen plays a more active role in the rebellion. Supposedly she is an immortal warrior being, so I’d like to see her actually be in a battle. They had a good excuse this time for why she had Glimmer fighting in the final battle while she stayed on the sidelines, but doing that every time makes her look hypocritical and like a bad parent tbh.

We meet that witch who Adora met in the woods who first told her about Mara, and get more of their backstory (like how has she been alive for a thousand years?)

We learn more about where the Horde and the First Ones came from, because it is explicitly not from Etheria, so where?? Same place? Different place? Were there people living on Etheria before the First Ones got there, because most people seem to be very much not whatever species Light Hope is (unless Light Hope is genuinely just an A.I. and not a person?)

Spinerella and Netossa become part of the main crew and go on an adventure with Adora.

More interesting/dynamic fight scenes. I think towards the end they started hitting their stride, and I think the crew really had a feel for Catra’s movements because fight scenes with her always looked pretty good, but if I were to change/improve one thing about the art, it’d be that.
