Honestly I feel like the best way to describe it would be that fandom got her main character trait wrong. Like, sure, Caitlyn is compassionate, but that is not her defining characteristic. Her main trait is her drive, her determination.

During season 1, that meant her trying to make a name for herself, her keeping in contact with Jayce despite what her parents thought, her going on a one-woman hunt against Silco and his empire. It meant that when she met Vi ans saw all the corruption and the suffering going on, she wanted to help as much as she could.

But it also meant that when the target of her drive changed, then her priorities did too. It's why it was so easy for her, after getting tunnel visioned about Jinx, to commit all the atrocities. It's not that she no longer cared about the people, it's that she cared about hurting Jinx more.

I guess it all goes back to the question "What are you shooting for, young Kiramman?". She's a sniper, she looks through the visor and shoots. But there is a whole world beyond that scope.
