Unorthodox Upkeep, Epilogue
The epilogue for "Unorthodox Upkeep," an original work of fiction.
Diego's father lays down the law about his new investment.
Word count: 929 — Character count: 5,350 Drafted: April 16th – 17th, 2024 Revised: April 18th, 2024 —
The original intent of this story was actually supposed to be a straight fan-fiction story about M4RT4's character / persona. Problem being, I don't know enough about Unit M4RT4 to really write for her. I ended up just making my own characters for the purpose of the story. At the very least, if anyone "acts weird", it's entirely "in-character" for them since they're my own creations! Hah.
The story was also supposed to go a slightly different route… but never you mind~
Characters and concepts inspired by M4RT4 and created by Jo Li

"Diego, my boy!"
A voice called from the front of the antique shop. Diego had been up all night, trying to repair the antiquated robot and make it presentable. There were still a lot of things that needed fixing or looking at and, unfortunately… "Diego?" He was out of time.
"Back here, Pop!" The door to the shop's workshop opened and a shorter man with a full, white beard walked in. Diego smiled at him, nodding. "I couldn't get Romy completely fixed up," he said to his father. "She still needs a lot of work before she's ready." "'She'? Wait. 'Romy'?" Diego's father paused, looking surprised. "You named it?" Diego nodded. The older man chuckled in response. "Well," he continued, "Rome wasn't built in a day… I can't imagine 'Romy' was, either!" "Was… was that wordplay, Pop?" Diego smirked. "Nice. But, yeah. I still need to replace some wiring in her primary movement systems. Some of her plating needs repair and replacement, and I think I should take her derma-cloth to a tailor. Get that patched up." "I see…" The other man hummed. "Diego, my boy. One question." "Yeah, Pop?" He waved his cane toward the robot. "Is there any particular reason that the robot is holding onto your arm like that?" "What?" Diego turned his head, looking at Romy. Her screen was pink and her digital face looked uncertain. She was also holding onto his left arm like she was a scared child. "Oh, right…" The young man cleared his throat before asking, "Do we have to sell her? Maybe we could, I dunno… put her to work here at the store?" "This unit is highly adaptable!" Romy added with a hopeful voice. "This unit can be reprogrammed to suit any—" "Quiet," the older man said, making Romy flinch. "Son, you know I bought this robot with the intent of selling it. A small shop like ours has no use for a robotic assistant. Come to think of it, why is it even activated? Don't tell me you haven't scrubbed its data banks yet." Diego furrowed his brow. "Uh…" "Honestly, do I have to do everything myself? Fine. Lemme see your doohickey." The younger man grunted as his father nudged him aside. He then tensely stared as his father picked up his diagnostic tool from the workbench. "The newfangled devices… Look at all these adaptors! Why didn't you just use one of the older models? Oh, never mind…" He sighed as he scrolled through some menus. "Le'see… Factory reset, factory reset… Ah, here it is!"
Romy went wide-eyed. She saw what Diego's father was doing… and she didn't like it. She looked at Diego with desperation. However… he was making no effort to stop his dad. When she caught Diego's eye, her expression shifted. Sadness filled her digital eyes, followed by acceptance. She clutched onto his arm and closed her eyes, whispering only two words.
"Thank you…"
After a moment, Diego gently laid the robot back. Its screen was blank and its body was limp. The man's face twitched and his eyes became wet. "What have I done…" "What?" Diego's father asked as he stared at the diagnostic tool's progress meter. "I… N-nothing…" Diego sighed, shaking his head. "L-listen, I… I'd like to take a nap before we open for the day. I'm kinda tired from working on your 'new toy' all night. "Just what did you do with it, last night? It barely looks like you even got started!" Diego looked away, rubbing his arm. His father laughed before looking over. "Just kidding. I'm sure you fixed as much of it as you could! We'll get this antique finished and put it on display eventually! For now? Go rest." "Y-yeah… Sure."
Diego sighed deeply as he walked into a small room to the side of the workshop. He slowly dragged the pullout bed out of the wall, then he pulled his wallet out and set it on a nearby table before lying down. I… I shouldn't have let myself get so attached to that robot. He scowled, shaking his head. The first mistake was naming it. The man sighed. No, the first mistake was keeping it online… I should have never turned it on… He paused, blushing from his wording of that thought. He hadn't meant it like that… No. That was the real problem, he told himself. I shouldn't have let it… encourage me… like that… There was something wrong with that robot… Robots aren't supposed to get excited by the idea of being modified or repaired. Most robots aren't supposed to suggest… 'i-interfacing'… either. Whoever made that robot was clearly a freak. He let his mind drift a little. If her creator was a freak, though… then what does that make me? He stared at his wallet, scowling as he felt a mix of guilt and shame wash over him. God, my girlfriend is gonna kill me…
Diego deeply sighed before turning over and pulling a small pillow over his head. He felt so conflicted about the previous night's events… about how he'd handled things and what he'd done or hadn't done. The look on Romy's face as her memory got wiped… he thought. What… why… why didn't I…? What— what have I done…?
As he lay there, he knew he had to push the previous night's events out of his head and get some sleep. He also knew how hard it would be. Whether he wanted to admit it or not… he had feelings for that robot. Unfortunately for him… she was gone. Forever.

Imagine: He asks you what you'd like for Christmas and you take it up a notch since he asked.
Pairings: Human!Elijah x Human!Reader
Warnings: Smut and a sweet family moment.
A/N: Hey guys! I just wanted to apologise in advance because this ended up being a lot longer than anticipated because I got a bit carried away and added the sweetest little family moment at the end anyway no more spoilers but enjoy!!
I had just unlocked the door to Mine and Elijah's apartment, where I had just got some a sexy Christmas outfit for Elijah's Christmas present, since he said I was enough and that he didn't want anything. I thought I'd give him me.
I was just finishing my hair, when I heard the front door open and close, that meant Elijah was home and just in time. He decided to be nice this Christmas and give Klaus and lift home since he got hammered at Rousseau's for Christmas and why not.
“Beautiful ? I'm back.”
“Okay baby, just wait in the living room. I'll be out in a second.”
“Okay sweetheart.”
I smiled at the terms of endearment, it's a usual thing but I love it so very much. I get Goosebumps and start to blush whenever he says things like 'beautiful' or 'sweetheart'. I looked at myself in the mirror and smiled, I know he's going to love it. He always likes it when I dress up just for him.
I opened the bedroom door and stepped out, before walking towards Elijah and standing in front of his chair that he was sat in.
“Happy Christmas, Handsome.”
He gaped for a second and then closed his mouth regained his usual posture and smirked. His hands reached out to grab the diaphanous fabric of the lingerie I was wearing and muttered under his breath.
“Happy Christmas indeed. Wow....I feel terrible I didn't at least get dressed up for you.”
“No, it's okay. Don't worry about it.”
“No it's not. Tell me what you for christmas.”
“Santa ? Is that you ?”
He chuckled and I kept my act up and sat on his knee whilst his arm wrapped around my waist and his other hand rested on my knee.
“It is indeed. What would you like for Christmas this year ?”
“I've been thinking very hard about this Santa because I really don't want anything except one thing. So I would really appreciate it if you have it too me....”
“It better be a good thing to ask for because that was a hell of a build up...”
“I promise it is....”
“Well then, what would you like ?”
“I would like you to fuck me hard. Please.”
I looked at him lustfully and he returned the gesture. Before pulling both my legs and wrapping them around him, making my heels rest on his back. We were inches apart and very desperate to make good on my wish.
“As you wish, my beautiful.”
We grinned at eachother and kissed eachother roughly, passionately....lustfully. I'd never been so turned on as I was then in my life. He was about the rip the lingerie off of me but luckily I stopped him before he could.
“Wait, I spent too much on this for you to rip it straight away. At least let it get 2 wears in.”
“Fine.”
He left it on instead, luckily for us both, there was no bottom half to it. The lingerie was a just a transculent dress really. He pulled the cups of the dress under my breasts so they could breathe however they were immediately suffocated once again, only this time on the sweet mouth of Elijah Mikaelson. His tounge encircled each nipple, one by one and discharged a quiet moan from me.
I clutched at the nape of his neck and began to rub myself against his hard on immediately. He let out a small groan and tightened the grip he had on my nipple with his mouth, which inspired a slight screech from myself. I ripped the belt off of him and I threw it behind him to an empty space by the tree. I continued to rip his clothes off and one of the articles of clothing hit the tree and disturbed us because a bauble had smashed on the floor. We pulled away and started giggling at eachother and we're also incredibly out of breathe. He slipped his boxers off and I immediately blushed.
Everytime I saw how much I affected him, I blushed and I thought it was such an awkward thing to do. I had expressed how I felt about it before to Elijah but he reassured me that he very much adored it but I still feel that tiniest bit awkward.
I still continued to rest my body on my knees and wrap my lips around his cock, he threw is head back and groaned before he forced himself to pull me off of him and stood up and made me sit down in the chair before kneeling down and lining himself up with my entrance. The action made me bite my lip in anticipation and my lip almost flew out of my mouth as soon as he thrust into me.
My hands gripped the arms of the chair and he consistenly thrusted into me at a slow pace. I stretched around him and his hips slapped against the back of my thighs and he deepened himself further inside of me. It was a tantinisingly slow pace but I knew he was making it last though.
It's not often that we get to just have sex without arranging it. The kids were staying with Rebekah and Marcel for the night and we were going to have a quiet night alone. We often have to plan we have sex though, which makes it less special and it's not even the kids we have to arrange it around...it’s also Klaus. He's incompetent without Elijah with him, I swear he has separation anxiety. I do feel bad for him though since Hayley doesn't like him seeing Hope alone because she's worried he's constantly drunk. He just missed Camille and has just attended the wedding of the love of his life and someone he saw as a brother to him.
Elijah gripped my legs, leaving handprints embroidered in my skins. He pulled out suddenly and flipped me around on the chair. I gripped the back of the chair and my knees sunk into the fabric of the bottom cushion. His large hands stroked my hips tightly before getting down on his own knees and licking and kissing my entrance, earning a few sweet moans to erupt from my throat. Not long after, he sprung back up and stroked my clit with the tip of his cock before suddenly thrusting straight into my entrance which caused a loud moan to echo around us. One of my hands gripped the arm and one gripped the back of the chair, as his pace quickened and he created slapping sounds between our bodies. He kept rocking his hips back and force at a never ending pace. Groans emitting from his body aswell and his hands founding the best grip on my hips. I started to tighten around him and not longer, I came all around him.
He pulled me to stand up after I came and sat down himself before gently pulling my hand and prompting me to sit on his lap. He positioned himself at my entrance as I was still a bit shaky from my release. I sat down on him slowly whilst letting out a long breathy moan. His hands found my hips again and mine gripped his shoulders. I was too overstimulated to keep moving, so he moved my hips up and down on his lap so he could reach his orgasm. He started throbbing, stimulating me more and more until we both released all over eachother, making a mess. His juices were running down my thighs and dripping down his cock, falling onto his stomach. Mine, combining with his...again running down my thighs and drenching his now flaccid cock.
I carefully removed myself off of him, to grab a warm towel to clean us up with. The sheer material of my dress, tickling my legs as I walked. I walked into the bathroom and looked at myself. I knew I wasn't ugly but damn do I look good after sex. Although it never feels like just sex when it's with Elijah, it feels like pure, physical luck. I always feel like the luckiest women in the world...not forgetting the best looked after cause wow is he godly in physical act of love, for lack of more appropriate words. I walked back in after finishing cleaning myself up and handed him a cloth too, before giving him a kiss and going to run a bath.
“Hey Lijah handsome, I'm gonna run a bath do you wanna get in with me in a sec ?”
“I would love too, beautiful.”
He just finished and stopped in the doorway to our bedroom and turned to him.
“Can you b-"
He cut me off.
“Yes, I will get the wine. Give me a second sweetheart.”
I giggled and walked off. He walked into the bathroom, seeing me already in the bath. Surrounded by candles and and the sweet aroma of the Christmas candle burning, that smelt like cinnamon, hot wine, vanilla, ginger, orange, honey and chocolate. Just a warm, inviting smell to relax too on Christmas day. He got in and poured some white wine he had delivered, along with himself.
“Here we go beautiful.”
I grabbed the glass he handed me and we spent the whole bath talking about nice thing like: the kids, new years eve and complimenting eachother. After about 45 minutes, the water started to go cold so we decided to get out and get into some more comfortable clothes and tidy up a bit. We started to relax by sitting on the sofa and throwing a blanket on top of us whilst watching ‘It’s a wonderful life'...and let me tell you it most certainly is. We were just about to go make some hot cocoa when there was a knock on the door, confusing us both. We glanced at eachother in wonder and when I opened the door, Rebekah and the kids were standing there. I smiled at them as they ran in to say hi to their dad. I turned to Rebekah.
“I’m sorry, I know I promised I'd have them for the night but they wouldn't go to sleep unless Marcel read them a book or your and Elijah were there, but Marcel passed out whilst we were watching a film. I really wanted you and Elijah to have a night to yourselves and I really tried bu-”
I chuckled at her and held my hand up.
“Rebekah, it's fine we don't mind. Honestly, I was missing having the kids here anyway and we were just about to make hot cocoa anyway. Calm yourself down and go to sleep, you look exhausted.”
“Thankyou Y/N, I owe you one !”
“No you don't!”
I closed the door, to see the kids sat with their dad watching home alone. I smiled at the view, this is why I'm lucky to have Elijah.

Sunshine Boy (Hinata x Reader)
Warnings: None
Genre: Fluff
Part: 1/1
Summary: When you decided to sit in the park to think, you didn’t expect it to rain. You were soaking wet and miserable until one orange haired ray of sunshine appeared.
Author’s Note: Please let me know if my read more tab is working! For some reason, I’ve been having trouble adding it in.
•••
You had accepted your fate. Long before it had even begun to rain, you saw the signs and just decided to accept it. You sprawled out in the grass and continued wallowing in your own pity. Soon your tears became mixed with the thick downpour of rain that soaked you from head to toe.
You supposed you must have looked really weird laying in the grass and crying silently, but at this point you couldn’t really find it in you to care. Getting broken up with can do that to you. Especially when it’s your first breakup and the person used to be your best friend.
You were so lost in thought that you almost missed the way the rain had stopped coming down. You sighed, almost ready to jump back into your thoughts when you realized the rain only stopped pouring on your upper half. You cracked your eyes open and saw a black umbrella accompanied by a head of bright orange hair. Your eyes shot wide open and you finally were able to take in the details of the boy standing by your head above you. Despite him being upside down to you, you could see that he had piercing brown eyes, a fluffy head of orange hair, and your school’s uniform on.
“Hi. My name is Hinata. Are you ok?”
Normally, you would never talk to a complete stranger about your issues. Never in a million years did you imagine you would, but you were already laying down in the grass getting soaked and there was something about the boy above you that drew you in. It was like he was a glowing ball of light in all of your gloom. And so, you decided to answer.
“My boyfriend and best friend of 2 years broke up with me to date other girls, so I decided to wallow in my own self pity. Then it started raining, so...here I am.”
Instead of all the millions of things he could have asked, instead he asked, “Is it making you feel any better?”
You paused for a moment to think about it. To be honest, it did feel kind of nice. Even if your clothes were sticking to you and you would probably catch a cold later, it did feel nice.
“Yes. Actually, it does,” you answered honestly, a ghost of a smile making its way onto your face.
Hinata stayed still for a moment, as if thinking about something, before grinning widely and beginning to close his umbrella. You furrowed you’re brows as you watched him but said nothing.
“I think I’ll join you then,” he said simply, placing his stuff down and then moving to lay down by your side.
You spent the next 2 hours laying down and talking about pretty much everything under the sun. By the end of it, you had almost forgotten why you had come out here in the first place. Hinata had captivated all of your attention and it was like there wasn’t anyone else in the world but the two of you during that time. It was one of the most relaxing experiences you’d ever had.
Turning your head to look at him one last time before you had to leave, you realized for the first time just how close the two of you had gotten. His face was a mere few inches away from yours and he must have realized it as well because his face burst out into a furious blush as he laughed nervously and looked back up at the sky.
“My name is Y/N L/N, by the way. I realized I never actually introduced myself,” you said quietly, trying to calm the frantic beating of your heart from moments ago.
He cautiously turned to look back at you and smiled. It was a beautiful smile that dazzled and made something warm settle in your stomach.
“That’s a really cool name! My first name is Shoyo,” he replied, his smile never wavering.
You wished you could stay longer, but your mother would already be mad at you for staying this long.
“Well, Hinata, as much as I’d like to stay I really should be going home,” you sighed, turning to face the sky and beginning to sit up.
He followed you instantly and began reaching for the umbrella behind him. When you were finally on your feet, he was as well, holding out the umbrella for you to take.
“I can’t take that!” you argued, shoving it back towards him, “Besides, I’m already soaked so it doesn’t matter if I get more wet.”
“I ride my bike home so I can’t use it anyway,” he responded, shoving it right back towards you.
You hesitated for a moment before finally taking it and opening it above the two of you. Now that you were both standing, you realized just how short he was. You hadn’t really noticed how tall or short he was when he was standing above you and laying beside you.
“I can hear you thinking it! I know I’m short, you don’t have to tease me!” he exclaimed, pouting slightly as you smirked.
“I didn’t say anything,” you said, biting your lip to keep yourself from smiling.
Truth be told, you could care less if he was taller or shorter than you and by how much. Height was such a stupid thing to worry about when dating was involved.
You caught your train of thought and blushed slightly at the realization. Sure Hinata was definitely attractive and you got along really well, but you were just broken up with and he could be taken for all you know! You shook your head and focused back on the present moment.
“When can I give this back to you?” you asked him, gesturing to the umbrella.
“Just come by the gym! You can give it to me then. Oh! And then you can watch me play!” he exclaimed excitedly.
You heart fluttered at the invitation and you couldn’t stop yourself from smiling at his enthusiasm. You agreed to meet him after school and then parted ways. Your mother scolded you for laying in the cold, but she comforted you once hearing the reason why.
The next day, you found Hinata at the gym like promised and gave him his umbrella back. You also stuck around to watch for a little bit and were amazed at what you saw. Despite his height, he had an amazing jump. The first time you saw it, it was like the world moved in slow motion. It was as if he was flying. Even more amazing was how happy he was afterwards. The smile on his face when he jumped in the air and sent the ball flying over the net was brighter than you’d ever seen before.
It was enough to get you coming back again and again to watch. You always helped out around the court by cleaning up and keeping score during practice matches. The team had come to recognize you as one of them fairly quickly even if you didn’t hold an official position. Apparently that didn’t matter to them as long as you supported them. You had to admit that it made you happy to be there, so if they would allow you, you would continue to come.
Afterwards, Hinata always walked with you part of the way home. Kageyama, the grumpy setter who you had come to befriend as well, always split with the two of you a few blocks early. Hinata and you would always walk to the park before you finally went seperate ways.
This continued on for months. Eventually, Yachi offered for you to become the official assistant manager, to which you accepted. Hinata was beyond excited to hear the news, especially since it meant he got to spend more time with you. Knowing he cared that much sent those all too familiar butterflies off.
Watching Hinata play during practice was mesmerizing, but watching him play during a real game was something else. Especially one as important as this one. It was the rematch against Aoba Johsai that everybody had been waiting for. Your anxiety was through the room as you watched them go back and forth, neither team ever continuously having the lead. The closer down the wire it got, the more anxious you became.
After their previous loss against them, Hinata had been devastated. You two had laid down in the grass just like the first day you met and stayed there for hours as he cried. It broke your heart to see him so sad, but watching him right now he was nothing but determined. It made something swell up inside you to see him continue to give it his all. He would never give up and that was one reason you had fallen for him.
So, as you watched Hinata slam the ball down onto the other side of the court, you couldn’t stop yourself from screaming out of joy. On that walk home, Hinata was the happiest you had ever seen him. He was talking animatedly as he went, jumping up and down when he got extra excited.
“And did you see when I went WHOMP and they went WHAH. And then-,” Hinata was saying, only stopping when you interrupted.
“Hinata, we’re at the park. Aren’t you gonna start heading home?” you asked, giggling slightly as he came back to reality and began taking in his surroundings.
“Oh. Right. Well uh.... I wouldn’t mind walking you all the way today,” he suggested, blushing slightly as he rushed to add, “Only if you want to! It’s totally fine if you don’t. I get it.”
You simply laughed, putting your hand on arm to stop him from freaking out. He froze at the contact and you smiled at him.
“I wouldn’t mind if you walked me,” you said.
After that, Hinata continued walking you all the way home. You never questioned him, only thanking him and giving him a quick hug before heading inside each time. He always stuttered a response before taking off back towards the park.
Time kept passing and with each day, you realized just how gone you were for him. He had become the bright shining light that was always there for you. He inspired you to do your best at what you loved and to never give up. He cheered you up when you were sad and celebrated with you when you were happy. He was passionate and unapologetically himself. He made you forget about the what if’s and start focusing on the present. When he was with you, you felt invincible. Like you could do anything.
It didn’t even occur to you that he could feel the same. He was so obsessed with volleyball that you doubted he had time to worry about feelings and girls. Volleyball was his whole life. Everytime you thought that maybe he did like you back, Kageyama’s words came rushing back to you. It was at lunch when you were buying drinks from the vending machine with him when he made the comment in passing after turning down a confession.
“I don’t even have time to have feelings. Volleyball is all I need right now.”
The only other person who loved volleyball as much as Hinata was Kageyama, so it was an easy assumption to make that he would feel the same. It was the one topic that the two of you never discussed on your walls home. Besides the few times you talked about your ex, the two of you never talked about crushes. You didn’t think much of it, simply resigning yourself to a one sided crush.
Still, that didn’t mean your mind didn’t wander at times. Sometimes his hand would brush yours and you could almost see a blush dusting his cheeks or he would meet your eyes from across the room and just smile like he had successfully done a quick attack. It was times like those, like the one you were in right now, laying in the grass beside him, that made you think maybe he could like you back.
The only way to know for sure was to ask.
“Hey Hinata?” you asked, turning your head to look at him.
“What?”
“Do you like anyone?”
Hinata’s eyes widened in shock and he blushed a furious red color. He looked back up towards the sky and laughed nervously.
“D-Do I like anyone?” he repeated the question as if to confirm he had heard it right.
You turned to look at the sky as well, picking at your nails absently to calm your nerves. There was an awkward silence for a few moments before you spoke again.
“Yea. We’ve talked about pretty much everything but that, so I was curious,” you explained.
“R-Right. Well I... I guess I just didn’t want to talk about it in case you still like your ex,” he said, sighing slightly at the end, “I didn’t want to bring up bad memories.”
“Oh god. Definitely not,” you replied, your face scrunching up at the mere idea of it, “We both saw how that ended. I’d rather not do it again.”
Hinata was uncharacteristically quiet. You snuck a glance at him and saw that his brows were furrowed as if he was deep in thought. You were about to call out his name when he finally said something.
“I guess I do like someone.”
You looked back up at the sky, your heart sinking a bit at his response. Of course it wouldn’t be you. You swallowed your own feelings in favor of being a good friend.
“Who is it?” you asked, clenching your fists to get them to stop shaking.
“W-What? I can’t say who it is!” he exclaimed, causing you to jump slightly at the sudden outburst.
You looked at him once more. He was definitely blushing now and he was chewing on his lip as well. You took a moment to admire the way the sun made his hair seem like it was glowing. He really was like a ray of sunshine, inside and out.
“Why not? I thought we were best friends?” you asked him.
He sighed with a smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes as he let out a defeated, “Yeah. We are.”
You were slightly confused as to why he said it like that, but you let it go.
“Alright, well if you won’t tell me who she is, at least tell me about her,” you compromised.
“Fine, but first you have to tell me if there’s someone you like,” he said, causing my stomach to churn nervously.
“I do,” you said, forcing your voice to remain emotionless.
The two of you became silent, feeling the slight tension buzzing through the air around you. Neither of you made any moves to break it at first. After a minute or two went by, Hinata finally began to talk.
“She’s amazing,” he began, clearly referring to his crush, “She’s always helping me out when I need it the most and she believes in my dream to become the next Tiny Giant. She’s pretty too. Everytime I see her my stomach goes all whoosh and I don’t know what to say. But she never makes fun of me for it. She just goes with it and makes me feel like I can be myself for once.”
“She sounds really special,” you managed to say, forcing yourself to smile slightly as you looked over at him.
This time, when you did, he was already looking at you. His brown eyes stared into yours and you could see so much love in them. Whoever he did like was truly lucky.
“She is,” he whispered.
You forced a tight lipped smile to come as you fought back the sinking feeling in your stomach. Seeing how much adoration he had in his eyes for that girl made you more jealous than you’d ever felt before. It was the same look he had when he had finally learned how to do the quick attack with his eyes open. Anyone who was able to get Hinata looking that happy was truly someone to admire.
“So,” he said, clearing his throat slightly as he looked back up at the sky, “Tell me about who you like.”
“Ok, fine. But I’m gonna be vague otherwise you’ll figure it out,” you sighed, thinking for a moment before saying, “He’s someone really close to me. He’s nothing like I expected him to be, but in the best way possible. I always find myself gravitating towards him when I’m sad because his passion and drive always inspires me to do better. I’ve never met someone as determined as him. And his eyes are...beautiful. I could look at them forever and never get bored.”
Hinata sat up and turned to face you, his expression unreadable. You furrowed your brows and propped yourself up as well, cocking your head slightly out of confusion.
“I think I know who you like,” he said softly, something flashy quickly across his expression and then disappearing, “And I think I know why you didn’t want to tell me.”
“Y-You do?” you asked, your heart racing as you waited for him to turn you down.
“You like Kageyama, don’t you? You didn’t want to tell me because you thought I’d tell him,” he replied, causing you to release a breath you didn’t know you had been holding.
“Hinata, that’s-“ you began to explain as he cut you off.
“L/N it’s fine. I’m not gonna tell him. I know Kageyama is my best friend, but so are you. I’d never violate your trust like that,” he said, sounding slightly hurt at the idea that you didn’t trust him.
“No, Hinata you’ve really got the wrong idea,” you started again, only for him to laugh and shake his head.
“Everything you just told me perfectly describes Kageyama. I mean, you’re always spending time with him and he’s more passionate about volleyball than anyone I’ve ever met besides myself. And his eyes are pretty, too,” he argued, his lips pressing into a fine line as he finished.
“Hinata, listen to me,” you said, shuffling closer to him to get him to look at you, “I don’t like Kageyama. There’s nothing to be upset over.”
“I’m not upset!” he huffed, hanging his head after you gave him a look before saying, “I’m not! I just... I...”
Seeing him look so sad made you feel so guilty. It had been your idea to bring this topic up in the first place and it had clearly ticked a nerve in him somewhere. You took a deep breath and made the decision to just come clean. Anything to get the sad look off his face.
“I’ll tell you who it is, but you have to promise not to be mad at me,” you said.
He looked back up and you and nodded. It was now or never.
“Close your eyes.”
“What why?”
“Just do it! It’s embarrassing!”
“But-“
“Hinata!”
He grumbled something under his breath before shutting his eyes firmly closed. You did a precautionary wave in front of his face and were satisfied when it got no response. Taking a deep breath you brought yourself even closer to him.
You took a moment to commit him to your memory. Every strand of hair to every freckle that dotted his face. This could be the last time you’d be this close to him ever again and you never wanted to forget it.
“What’s taking so long?” he whined, causing you to jump back slightly at his words.
“Jeez, I’m going! Be patient,” you snapped lightly causing him to huff.
He didn’t say anything more. Getting close to him once more, you forced your heartbeat to calm down. You waved once more just in case before deciding to do it.
“Remember, you promised not to be mad,” you reminded him quietly.
Before he had a chance to respond, you pressed your lips onto his. They were soft and warm against yours and it made you wish you could kiss him longer. It was a short firm kiss, gone just as soon as it had appeared.
Hinata’s eyes shot open as you pulled back, already frantically grabbing your things to book it. He looked like he was short circuiting. His mouth flopped open and his cheeks burned redder than you’d ever seen them before. Your own cheeks felt like they were on fire as you finally turned to give him a nervous smile before running down the path towards your home.
“L-L/N wait!” Hinata called out.
You looked over your shoulder to see him getting up as well, no doubt preparing to run after you. Clearly you hadn’t thought this through. There’s no way that you’d be able to outrun him with all the training he did. You cursed slightly under your breath as you continuing running as fast as you could. Despite giving it your best effort, he was quicker. You heard his steps becoming louder and his desperate calls to get you to stop before he finally grabbed your wrist and yanked you back.
You stumbled slightly, causing him to have to catch you. He wrapped his arms around you as you slammed into him, causing him to squeal as you both went tumbling to the ground. With his arms still wrapped securely around your waist, you fell right on top of him. Lifting your head slightly, you caught Hinata’s pained expression and panicked.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry Hinata,” you apologized profusely, scrambling off of him and quickly helping him sit up.
Your embarrassment over kissing him had disappeared completely as the overwhelming urge to take care of him came over you instead. He took the entire force of the fall for you and if the strained expression on his face was anything to go by, he was definitely feeling it.
“I’m ok. Really,” he assured you, stumbling only slightly as he got back on his own two feet.
Wordlessly, he held out a hand to help you up, which you took without thinking about it. Once you were standing you expected him to let go, but his grip remained firm as ever.
You looked down at your feet as your shake started slowly coming back. Your face burned with embarrassment as you shuffled awkwardly, trying to figure out what to say. Luckily for you, Hinata broke the silence first.
“L/N,” he said quietly, his voice shaking slightly as if he was nervous.
You slowly raised your head to look at him, your cheeks still a furious red. You expected him to be furious or upset, but instead he had the same nervous yet determined look on his face that he wore before his matches.
Before you could say anything, he brought his free hand up to your face and kissed you. His lips were the same as before, soft and warm, but it was different than the first one. This one was passionate and sloppy and lacked any of the nervous restraint that the first kiss had had. It was long and aching, like you couldn’t get enough of eachother. When he finally pulled away, he rested his forehead on your own as you both caught your breath.
“It’s you, L/N. You’re the someone special I was describing. I just didn’t think you could ever like me that way,” he said breathlessly.
When you met his eyes, you couldn’t help but laugh. It was free and giddy and it caused Hinata to start laughing too. You took your hand out of his and pulled him into a strong hug. His arms wrapped around your waist and you wrapped your own around his neck.
“It’s always been you. You make me happier than I’ve ever been before. You’re the kindest, most passionate and caring individual I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. Ever since the day you laid down in the rain with me I knew you’d be the death of me. I like you, Hinata. Not Kageyama,” you said, hugging him tighter to you, like if you let go he would disappear.
“Shoyo,” he said, causing you to pull back slightly with a questioning look before he explained, “You should call me Shoyo.”
You grinned widely, laughing once again at the amount of joy that coursed through you. You didn’t realize until this moment what pure joy felt like. Never before in your life had you ever felt this happy.
“Alright, Shoyo. I’ll let you call me Y/N on one condition,” you said, smirking slightly.
“Anything,” he replied immediately, making you giggle as a result.
“You have to take me on a date this weekend,” you teased, watching as his smile grew before adding, “Oh, and you have to agree to be my boyfriend.”
Instead of replying, he simply kissed you once more and began jumping around and hollering out of joy. You felt the familiar warm feeling of love stir in your stomach as you watched him celebrate his newly acquired title.
“I’ve got the greatest girlfriend in the world!” he shouted out, causing some of the other passerby’s to turn and look at him.
You were laughing alongside him as you tried to calm him down, but to no avail. He insisted on screaming it out to the world the entire walk home. He held your hand the entire way and made sure that every single person walking by new just how special you were. Normally, it would have embarrassed you. You would have insisted that he shush and act like a normal person. But, seeing how happy he looked and the amount of love in his eyes as he talked about you to random people was enough to convince you to endure it.
Anything for your sunshine boy.

If You Just Realize
Part Eleven: Time to Realize
Summary: New hope is sparked for Sebastian and Y/N after their date. Pairing: Sebastian Stan x Reader Word Count: 2360 Series Warnings: Death, angst, sadness. Lots of creative licensing, I’m sure. Chapter Warnings: Night terrors, almost smut (is that a warning?). Square Filled: This entire series will fill my realized feelings square for @marvelfluffbingo. A/N: I’ve much enjoyed writing this series, and I hope all of you enjoy reading it! The tag list is open; requests to be added can be done so here. There are bits and pieces of Romanian throughout the series, mostly from Google Translate and the few things I’ve picked up as I learn the language.
Also, I don’t know why I’ve never mentioned it before, but a huge song inspiration for the title of this fic (and some chapter titles) is Realize by Colbie Caillat.

When Milena woke from her nap, Sebastian informed her that she would be going to her grandparents’ house for the evening while Sebastian and Y/N went out for a little while.
As she ate her snack of grapes and crackers, Milena frowned. “You’ll come get me later?”
Sebastian nodded. “I promise, we’ll come get you later. Unless you want to sleep at Bunica’s house?”
The little girl shook her head adamantly. “No, here! In my room!”
“In your room it is, then,” Y/N assured, kissing the top of Milena’s head. “We’ll try to hurry so that we get you before you go to sleep, but even if you fall asleep over there, you’ll wake up over here. Okay?”
Milena seemed to be appeased for the time being; she nodded and went back to her snack. Sebastian and Y/N exchanged a worried glance. Though they had an appointment the next week with the child psychologist, the terrors had seemed to be a thing of the past.
“When you’re done with your snack, why don’t you go fill up your backpack with the things you want to take over there?” Sebastian suggested.
She finished her snack quickly after that, then raced to her room to get her things together.
“Do you want me to take her over there? Or go with you?” Y/N offered.
Sebastian shook his head. “No, it’s okay, I’ll take her. I don’t mind — I’m going to see if Mom will take her earlier so we can get to dinner earlier and get back to pick her up. I don’t want to trigger another terror.”
She took his hand and squeezed. “We can pick another night, if you want?”
“No, I want us to do this, I don’t want to put it off.”
“Okay. I’m going to go make sure she’s not packing her entire room. Why don’t you call your mom and see when she’s okay with Milena coming over, call the restaurant to make sure we can get a table when we need.”
Sebastian grinned. “I will do all of that, yes.”
Y/N frowned. “Why are you grinning like that?”
“You sound like such a … wife and mom. In a good way, Y/N/N.”
She scowled at him for a moment, but a shy smile soon broke through. She swatted at him for his teasing, but he caught her arm and reached to tickle her side. Y/N shrieked and scrambled to get away, but he held tight and pulled her against his chest. His arms went around her shoulders and hers instinctively wrapped around his middle. Their laughter died down as they both realized this embrace was no friendly, playful hug; there was far more between them than friends and convenient spouses.
Y/N cleared her throat and pulled away from him. “I’m going to check on her, you make those calls.”
Sebastian nodded. He watched her go and wondered if he would ever have the courage to tell her how much he cared for her, without worrying about risking their friendship.
As Y/N padded toward Milena’s room, goosebumps rose over her skin. She had been so warm in Sebastian’s arms. He had been clear, though, that he didn’t want to lose the friendship between them, and she wouldn't allow her own feelings to overshadow what he needed just then.
The drop-off went better than they expected, so Y/N and Sebastian felt much lighter as they headed to dinner. Thanks to a reservation, their table was ready when they arrived.
“You look amazing,” Sebastian smiled over the table at her. “New dress?”
Y/N nodded, blushing. “Sort of. Had it for a while, haven’t had the chance to wear it yet. This seemed like as good an occasion as any. Thank you, for suggesting we do this.”
“Of course. I love having Milena around, but a little one-on-one time is always appreciated. What looks good on the menu?”
They mulled over their options for a few minutes before they both decided. The waiter brought back their requested bottle of wine, took their food order, then left the table. Sebastian poured wine for both of them, then held his glass up in the form of a toast.
“To us,” he smiled, “and making this crazy life work for us.”
“To us,” she returned, clinking her glass gently against his before sipping at her wine. “Mmm, that’s good.”
Sebastian nodded his agreement. “I noticed the boxes from Los Angeles seem to be slowing down.”
“Yes, thank goodness. I didn’t realize how much stuff I had! My assistant got rid of a lot for me, if you can believe that.” She chuckled and blushed a little. “Her new task is going through my mail and sending what didn’t get forwarded that may be important. That should be about it. The landlord is doing the walk through early next week, and that’ll be that.”
“You’re not keeping your place there?”
She shrugged, nervously fiddling with the linen tablecloth. “My lease was up there in a couple of months and I figure if-slash-when I move back, I’ll maybe look at buying a house or getting into a different building.”
“If?”
She cleared her throat. “Well, you know, even after all of this, I want to stay close for Milena. And it’s not like you and I are only going to be friends until this is over. We’re always going to be friends, Seb. You said yourself, you don’t want to lose us, and I don’t either.”
They were both quiet after that. Y/N realized how desperately she wanted him to make some sort of remark that yes, they would always be friends, but that there was potential for more — not even potential for more, but just plain more. That this wasn’t going to end. That she didn’t need her place in Los Angeles because her home was here, with Sebastian and Milena.
“Did I lose you?”
She snapped back to the present, chuckling an apology. “Lost in thought, I suppose. Less talk about me, more about you. How are you doing with all of this? It’s been a lot of change in a short time.”
Sebastian sipped his wine. “I’m getting through. It seems surreal a lot of the time. Milena asked when Irina was coming to get her, you know, and I realized that I’ve subconsciously been waiting for that, too. I have so much good right in front of me — Mom, Anthony, you, Milena, the new house. Life is moving on, but it’s so … so … absurd, honestly, that it’s moving on without Irina.”
“That’s understandable. You both were a big part of each other’s lives. For whatever it’s worth, I think she would be really proud of the way you’re handling this — of everything you’ve already done for Milena.”
“I couldn’t have done any of it without you here,” he said, reaching across the table to take her hand.
She held tight, but shrugged. “You would have figured it out, you know. I may have helped, but you would do anything for that little girl and for your sister. A person would be a fool not to see that.”
“I just …” Sebastian breathed in deep and let it out, his hand still holding tight to hers. “I don’t know really what I’m trying to say, maybe. You’ve always been my friend, someone I could count on without a doubt. But the way you’ve stepped up here — I won’t keep repeating thanks I’ve already offered. You go and talk about staying here with us though, and it gives me new gratitude. New hope, too.”
New hope. Y/N looked into his eyes, releasing his hand so the waiter could set their plates in front of them, and saw that the hope Sebastian was referring to was quite possibly the same hope she was holding onto that the love she felt for him may one day be mutual.
As promised, Sebastian and Y/N picked Milena up from her grandparents’ house before she was asleep. Georgeta smiled and opened the door for the couple, welcoming them into the house.
“She’s been yawning for an hour,” the grandmother sighed, “but she refused to lay down, even to watch cartoons or something. She just kept saying, ‘Uncle Seb will come, then I can sleep.’”
Sebastian sighed. The counseling appointment couldn’t come soon enough. In the meantime, he would do the only thing he could do: love that little girl more than ever, make sure she felt safe, and tell her as often as possible that as much as he could help it, he would never abandon her.
“Are you so tired?” Y/N cooed, carrying Milena into the house.
Milena nodded against her shoulder. “Do I have to take a bath?”
“We can do that in the morning,” Sebastian offered. “How about you and Y/N go pick out some jammies and I’ll be in soon with your water cup, okay?”
Another nod. Sebastian headed to the kitchen to fill a sippy cup with water — something Irina had actually started, to avoid Milena getting out of bed at all hours — then headed to join them in Milena’s room.
She was already changed into one of her favorite nightgowns, and Y/N was brushing her hair before fixing it into a short, loose braid. Sebastian carried Milena to the bathroom, insisting that she at least brush her teeth before bed. The little girl whimpered but did as she was told.
Once she was finally tucked in, Sebastian reminded her that her cup was on the nightstand, kissed her forehead, hugged her tight, and told her to sleep good.
“Y/N, will you read me a story?”
Y/N nodded. “Okay, but I get to pick out which one.”
She traded a glance with Sebastian, who winked at her before leaving to his own bedroom to change out of his dinner clothes. Maybe he would see if Y/N was up for a movie and some popcorn — it was relatively early, after all.
Only a few minutes later, she joined him in the bedroom, kicking off her shoes at the door.
“We didn’t make it halfway through the story and she was out,” Y/N smiled, “doing that soft little snore she does. Too cute.”
Sebastian grinned and sat at the food of their bed. “Yeah, I know that sound. Most perfect snore I’ve ever heard.”
“Agreed,” she smiled softly, leaning against the doorway.
He met her eyes; the look there wasn’t evoked from Milena’s snoring, he was certain. He drew his bottom lip under his tongue and tilted his head. Y/N’s smile faded, but her eyes stayed bright; God, he had always loved that about her. Obviously, since he had dubbed her nickname from the trait.
In unison and still without speaking, she pushed away from the doorframe and he stood from the bed. They met in the middle, standing without touching for only a few seconds before Sebastian pulled her arms around him, then gently pushed his fingers into her hair, using the movement to tilt her head up towards him so that he could press his lips to hers, soft but urgent.
She pressed into him, her fingers grasping the cotton t-shirt he had just put on. Sebastian kept his hands in her hair, tugging only slightly at the root. A sharp gasp pulled her mouth away from his, and Sebastian could only smile against her lips.
“So maybe I’m not the only one who’s hopeful,” he commented. His voice was low and gravelly; his desire to have her was taking over his entire body.
Y/N shook her head. “Definitely not the only one.”
His smile returned, and so did hers. With a new rush of hope and desire, Sebastian reached just far enough under the hem of her dress to grip the back of her thighs. He picked her up off the floor, still kissing her, and gently set her on the bed.
She scooted back to the pillows, waiting for him to discard his shirt before he knelt onto the mattress. He took in the sight of her, waiting for him to make the next move. He knew the nervous chewing of her bottom lip, the excited half-grin that produced a dimple at the top of her cheek. That look of love and desire wasn’t new, but it wasn’t something he had ever imagined would be directed at him. Wasn’t something he had ever wished was directed at him, honestly, until their wedding night.
“You okay?” Sebastian whispered, reaching for her hand and pulling her into his lap.
She nodded, kissing him softly. “Nervous. But good nervous.”
“Just tell me if you want to stop, okay?”
“I trust you,” she assured, softly kissing his bottom lip.
Sebastian pressed his lips firmly to hers. She reacted in kind, nipping at his bottom lip before returning to the kiss. Y/N pushed herself further into his lap so their bodies were flush against each other; the resulting friction tightened his pants and drew a soft moan from her lips. He broke the kiss to put his hands on her thighs and slowly begin pushing the skirt of her dress further up.
“May I?” he chuckled.
She grinned and nodded, claiming his lips again. Sebastian’s hands rested at her hips, his fingers splaying over the back of her lace panties.
A scream broke through the otherwise quiet house. They pushed away from each other in an instant and scrambled off the bed. Sebastian reached for his discarded shirt and pulled it over his head.
“I’ll get her, you can change if you want,” Sebastian offered, walking a few steps backwards before she could catch up with him.
Y/N sighed and turned back to the bedroom, already working the dress over her head. Milena’s cries grew louder, even after Y/N could heard Sebastian trying to soothe his niece. With a million and one thoughts in her head, she discarded her dress and her undergarments, quickly exchanging them for a cotton nightgown and fresh underwear. Knowing how the night terrors usually went, she decided to wash her face and brush her teeth, then padded through the house to join Sebastian and Milena.

CHAPTER FOURTEEN.
JTRM — THE “R” STANDS FOR RECOVERING!
PREVIOUSLY.
AT LONG LAST!! my hiatus is broken! i’m very happy to present ch14... after months of failed attempts to finish ;-; thank you for all the kind messages in between 🖤🖤🖤 i hope you enjoy! :]c it's time for artist things, and bad memories!
[•/•/•• :
That one guy that paid me for that BIG ASS project, apparently, really liked it, and wants to see more of my paintings. Talked about exhibiting some of my shit in one of his galleries, if he likes any of ‘em. Neat.
…
And me and Johnny… had a… moment, or whatever. Whatever.]
--
Johnny sat wide-legged on the floor with a large crate settled between his knees, thumbing through the different paintings standing inside the box like records. His tongue stuck out the side of his mouth while he inspected each one with intrigue – Devi’s work was always so fascinating.
“Why are you even looking through that old shit?” Devi asked from across the room, smiling slightly as she spoke.
“It isn’t shit, I think they’re… cool.” His lips stuck out in a soundless ‘ooh’ as he lifted up a small painting of a retching face. He bared his teeth at the agonizing expression like a mimicking chimp, then set it back down to sift through more artwork.
With the news that she may have another chance to exhibit her paintings in a gallery, Devi had started the tedious process of scrutinizing her available pieces to slap together a decent portfolio, which was fairly difficult, seeing as she was her own worst critic.
“Well ‘cool’ or not, that’s all over a year old. The likelihood I’d want to stick any of them in a portfolio is very slim.” Devi turned to look at him as she finished, but stopped with a sharp inhale when she saw which painting Johnny was holding now.
Johnny was fixated with the canvas in his hands, finding such familiarity with the large eyes and long, devilish smile of the demonic looking subject on it. The paint was very rough in texture, and made the whole piece look rather fleshy. He brought up a finger to poke at the lumpy marks while he thought.
“Is this… me?” Johnny asked absentmindedly. Devi felt a cold sweat prickle on the back of her neck, but waved off any shame she felt with a swat of her hand.
“Yeah.” She answered honestly. Her attention focused on the painting, and she tried as best she could to not feel the deep-seated anger and disappointment that resonated within her at the time she created it. “It was a vent art I did, some time after the whole… attempted-murder, thing.”
“Ah.” Johnny nodded in acknowledgment, his mouth settling into a slight frown. “Is this how you saw me? With all the blood and tentacles coming out of my head?”
Devi’s lips slanted uncomfortably. She leaned her weight onto one of the bigger canvases she had on hand, and sighed.
“No, not really.” Her eyes wandered away from Johnny as she thought. “I just kind of, went wild with it, I guess. Added gore and sharp lines and splatters wherever I felt like. It was supposed to represent a feeling, not really… a person. I mean, it is you, but it was more like the energy you gave off, not how you looked.”
Johnny nodded, his teeth poking out again as his smile returned.
“Neat…” He commented and turned the canvas sideways to inspect it further. Devi blinked in surprise at his response, then snorted after a minute.
“—‘Neat’!?” She asked with a laugh. “That’s what you think that is?”
“It is!” Johnny’s attention jumped to her again. “I don’t have any pictures of myself really, and definitely no paintings. It’s cool that it’s… symbolic. Not of a particularly great time in my life, or spurred on by any particularly great choices on my part, but still cool. I like seeing how your brains perceived me in such an inventive manner.”
“HAH! You are truly the weirdest guy I’ve ever known, Nny.” She chuckled, and returned to the pieces beside her. As she started to sort again, Devi paused, and began picking at the chipped paint on one of her canvases thoughtlessly.
“You know, um,” She turned her head ever-so-slightly in Johnny’s direction. “—originally, it was just a normal portrait of you. I’d started it before our uh, date, then altered it later…”
Her cheeks blushed faintly at the admission; it was so embarrassing to confess that she’d taken him as her muse before she’d ever even asked him out. Part of her still felt, with little room for argument, that Johnny didn’t need to know that, but in light of recent events, it also seemed stupid to hide things pertaining to her ‘feelings’ from him at this point.
Johnny’s head popped up, his neck and back straightened fully, as he turned to stare at her. Devi wasn’t looking at him, but he could tell by her meaningless fidgeting with the canvas in her hands that her attention was still on him. It brought a giddy smile to his face.
“Oh.” He hummed contently, returning his staring to the portrait. He wondered what it looked like before she riddled its face with globs of resentful paint. With a content sigh, he answered his thoughts; “I bet it looked nice.”
“Tch!” Devi held her laugh inside her throat. “I’m sure I gave you too much credit.”
“HAHAHA!” Johnny sneered a wider smile. His brain immediately imagined an overly-handsome depiction of himself, even though he knew Devi had better taste than that. So funny. He reviewed the portrait one more time, then set it off to the side.
“Hahh… I like it a lot.” He sighed, and laid down flat on the floor, legs still sprawled. “I like all your stuff a lot. Why are you so critical about your paintings?”
Devi cocked an eyebrow at him.
“Are you going to try and tell me you’re not critical of your own artwork, Nny?” Her words jabbed playfully in his direction, and he puffed his cheeks out in response.
“WELL…” Johnny huffed, making Devi laugh again. “Maybe the stuff I do now, but all my old paintings, all the stuff I don’t remember even making… no. But I guess it’s hard to be self-critical of something you don’t have any recollection of creating.”
He brought his one leg up high to lob over the crate in his lap as he rolled onto his side to face her. Devi greeted him with a look of pity, but with a degree of immense curiosity to it.
“Shit.” Devi thought a moment. “I don’t think I ever really saw your old stuff, actually.”
Johnny had described to her vaguely last year, and in much more depth this year, his style of painting that had long-since depleted into noncomplex stick figure comics. He explained it as being rough and gritty, with themes of decay, agony, and horror, and his subjects most often being flesh-like nonsense, or close-ups of distorted human faces. The oldest of the surviving pieces would dip into dark landscapes and actual silhouettes, but that was the extent of it.
“Man,” Devi sighed as she thought. “I’d love to see ‘em.”
The comment surprised him, and Johnny laid still on the floor as he watched her with large eyes. He rolled into a seat position after a moment, and moved his staring to the carpet.
“W… would you, really?” He asked tentatively. “A lot of them are still in okay-condition, they’re just… buried in my house...”
Devi replied with a few confused blinks, mostly in regard to Johnny’s sudden change in demeanor. After a moment of thought, she was delightfully suspicious that his timidness now was because of her absolute refusal to enter his house the day she assisted him with ‘moving out’. The concern he had for making her uncomfortable was as unfortunately endearing as ever.
“You wanna go pick some up?” Devi asked with a smile, and Johnny cricked his chin up to stare at her with redoubled surprise.
“Really?” He asked in disbelief as he scuttled to stand. “I mean, I don’t want to impose.”
Devi laughed at him and balanced the canvas she held against the wall.
“Yeah. I need a fucking break from looking at my own paintings.” She explained with a pop of her back. “Who knows, maybe you’ll inspire me.”
She shrugged the last of her sentence at him as she walked past, and Johnny pivoted to watch her leave the room. He always found her teasing to be so disarming, never knowing what to do when she threw the ball into his court. It was fun, in a way, but he was always nervous to banter back besides mock cynicism. It made his heart flutter all the same.
“If you’d like.” He called after her as he walked. “I just meant—you know, if you don’t want to go inside, and all.”
Johnny stopped in the living room when he caught sight of Devi at her bedroom door, already straightening a newly pulled on t-shirt.
“Your concern is appreciated.” She smiled at him, then reached around the door and grabbed one of her shorter jackets—it was just too balls-hot to be wearing her trench coat at this hour. Stupid summer weather.
Johnny grinned, though his smile melted into an awkward squiggle as Devi approached him with that accursed collar in hand. He’d grown accustomed to wearing it on outings, but he still loathed it. He would be happy to chop it up and burn the pieces, one day.
His malicious thoughts were short-lived, as Devi roped the accessory around his neck. She paid much less mind to not touching him these days, and the caressing of her fingers made him feel like his insides might liquify from the heat. She smirked coolly as she clicked the collar shut.
“Why don’t you drive?” She suggested, and Johnny was taken off-guard again. He hadn’t driven at all since he’d come to live here, what with Devi preferring to have control over just about everything. He raised an eyebrow, cautiously inspecting her expression, but was unable to determine if this was representative of anything.
“I don’t feel like navigating the suburbs to get to your place.” Devi provided for explanation as she moved to the front door, but Johnny remained unsure. Still, he went to fetch his keys from one of the art room drawers without prodding any further.
--
NOW ON THE OTHER SIDE OF TOWN:
Devi had not been to Johnny’s neighborhood more than twice, and only once during daylight hours, yet she still managed to recognize some landmarks that signaled that they were getting close. One neighbor a few streets down had an absolutely obnoxious amount of pink flamingos in their yard, and another surely teetered the worth of their fragile masculinity on the pure number of beat-up looking muscle cars that lined their curb.
The car jerked as Johnny took a sharp turn onto a different street, and Devi sucked in a breath while she watched the addresses get closer in number to ‘777’. She stubbornly refused to let the sight of the ramshackle house bring her too much anxiety, but as they slowed beside it, and then turned up the slope of the driveway, the familiar shiver of distrust climbed up her spine. Johnny spared her a nervous glance.
“You don’t have to come inside if you don’t want’a…” He reiterated, in an effort to comfort her, but Devi only scoffed and started to exit the vehicle.
“NOPE.” She replied with a quick slam of the door. “Don’t worry about it, I’m fine.”
Johnny stepped meekly out of the driver’s side, and watched Devi glare at his ‘former’ place of residence. Guilt gnawed away at his stomach, well-aware of the traumatic memories of that evening that were still sealed away inside his house.
He’d lived with them long after their infamous date; tromping over the wooden floors that had served as her route of escape, or laying like a limp sock across the couch that would have been where they shared their first kiss. When he paused to dwell on those sorts of facts, remorse filled him each time, but certainly not to the extent that it used to. It wasn’t the soul-splitting agony that those first days had brought – it didn’t drive him into hysterics to catch sight of his bedroom mirror, nor did the thought of sitting on the right-hand side of his sofa.
But, of course, Devi hadn’t.
She didn’t muddle through that house for months, learning to accept the space beyond those fleeting, horrible memories. She hadn’t had to wander through the atmospheric fog of departed, romantic dreams, with its lingering tethers warping around her person like ghostly fingers, searching for what was lost. She didn’t find herself stepping on glass fragments even weeks afterwards, and having to force herself to accept, with tearful blinking, that there was no changing this; that this was her house, and there was no escaping what happened here.
Johnny frowned to himself, and started toward the front door, fretting all the way about what Devi’s response would be.
Devi gathered herself as she followed him up the pathway, and as Johnny fiddled with the lock, she spared a moment for a little flower that was poking out from the cracks of the cement. Symbolic, or ironic, she couldn’t decide.
The sound of the worn lock’s mechanics moving in sync with the key that Johnny jammed into it brought her attention up from the ground, and she steeled herself as he pushed the door open with a throw of his fingers. He remained on the front step with her, half-way shielding her from the innards of his home, as she peeked beyond the doorframe.
Even with her expectations low, she couldn’t help but blink her eyes wide in shock.
“Did you… throw out everything?” Devi questioned as she tried to peer past him and into the living room. The décor wasn’t particularly abundant the last time she had been there, but there was more on the wall than a weird little poster that said “I WUV YOU”, and certainly a decent amount of worn furniture. Johnny shot her a confused look, and waited a beat before allowing himself to relax into a smile.
“Oh, no.” He sniffed a laugh and took a few steps inside, loosely raising his arm to gesture to the far side of the room. “The TV n’ shit is just over here now.”
Devi poked her head past the threshold to see, and slanted her mouth uneasily at the sight of the stained sofa a few steps away. It looked even more beat up than the last time she saw it, but it was definitely still the same one. She smothered a scowl under her pursed lips, and fully passed the door’s threshold with a swing of her leg. It was just a stupid, dilapidated couch, she reminded herself—nothing to be wary of!
“My house got kinda wrecked after the wall-thing sent it careening through a tear in the dimension or, something like that.” Johnny continued. “Shit got tossed around everywhere, so I just pushed it all into one of the rooms… Pulled the couch and stuff back out after I came home a couple months ago.”
“That’s…” She cocked an eyebrow. “—I mean, at this point, sure, why not.”
Johnny snickered a little at her incredulous response, and continued further into the house, explaining in greater detail his decision making for what furniture he had rearranged and where. Devi paid little mind to his babbling as she gradually trailed his steps, taking in the house’s atmosphere with as little bias as she could. It was just as dingey as she remembered, and it did help her sore memories that it was basically gutted, aside from the worn couch and beat-up television. It barely looked like a house the way it was, instead looking more like a large shed. It definitely didn’t look like the place she remembered, and that was a very good thing.
“—I don’t spend much time in my bedroom, but I still thought it was important enough to leave it usable, so I just jammed everything in here.” Johnny finished, flinging open the door to his former ‘studio’. A few random objects fell and rolled out from the mass of clutter that loomed all the way to the top of the doorframe.
“Holy Hell.” Devi said loudly, aghast at the sight of the mounds of dusty debris and overturned furniture. There appeared to be parts of doors and chunks of ceiling plaster mixed in with the heaps of furniture and belongings, giving the entire mass the look of a true junkyard.
Johnny bend his leg up and reared it back as far as he could, before springing his heel out straight, sending most of the blockade crashing backwards inside of the room with one demanding kick. With the first heap out of the way, Devi could see more clearly that there was actually quite a bit of bare space inside. Enough floorspace to walk in, at least.
Johnny led the way, and sent a chunk of splintered wood clattering with a lazy punt of his boot. Devi watched it kick up dust as it fumbled along, then fall still near a pile of damaged Christmas decorations. The room was musty, and the only light granted inside the space was from the poorly boarded up windows that failed to stop the sun’s glow outside. She looked up to the ceiling for a light, but the only spot for one had a shattered bulb still twisted into the fixture.
“My drafting table was in here.” He mentioned offhandedly as he inspected a box.
“Ah,” Devi nodded in understanding. “so that’s why it took you so damn long to drag the thing out.”
“Well, yes, and the fact that it’s heavy as fuck.” Johnny snorted and peeled back the remains of an ironing board from its resting spot against the wall. It make a cracking sound, like bark being torn from a tree, then gave way in a small flood of junk to reveal some paintings hidden in the area behind.
“AH-HAH.” He cried in triumph, and moved proudly to the side to allow Devi the opportunity to inspect them first. Devi looked at him with an unsure expression, but decided to humor him and approach the pile as invited. As she stepped toward the stack, the twisting paint gathered her full attention, and she reached a hand out for it like a gleeful child.
She gripped the corner of the first canvas, and hoisted it up from the stack with a smooth pull of her arm. The rolling swirls of brushstrokes that greeted her brought a tantalized smile to her lips, and she had to extend the artwork out with both arms to continue her appreciation of it.
It was about three-feet in height—a fairly average sized painting—and was smeared with meticulous bends and curls of dark paint that made the two grim subjects look as though they were positively radiating in fear.
Gorgeous, she thought.
Devi gleamed, and set the painting to the side, eagerly reaching for the next one in the pile. Johnny watched her with uncertain, but very delighted, eyes. A timid smile bent his mouth as Devi reviewed his art. It was a lot different than her critiquing his current work, since these could actually be on par with what Devi herself might create. He desperately wanted her to be impressed, even though he could barely take credit as the artist anymore.
The painting Devi pulled out next was too large to properly view while holding, so she set it on the floor, tilted at an angle against a box, and stepped back a few feet to study it. Her lips parted with a curious exhale at the detailed eye in the center of the canvas, surrounded by flesh-like tethers and threads that seemed to keep it upright, like a spider’s web.
“Oh,” She breathed, and squatted down to see it more clearly in the wispy light. “I love this.”
The last of her apprehension of being inside the house flittered away as she absorbed herself in Johnny’s art, appreciating fully all of the effort put into the fine lines and details of this piece in particular. This one was definitely coming back home with her—she could already see it replacing that outdated movie poster in the living room.
Devi’s reaction surprised Johnny, and he dropped his neatly folded arms out from behind his back. He felt breathless, like he often did when Devi praised him, but to a much higher degree than usual. He watched her with a look of awe—she was completely captivated by one of his creations. One of the stupid paintings he almost loathed, simply because it was a symbol of the self he lost—because it was meaningless to him; no memory behind what drove him to paint it, or how he was feeling at the time, not even an approximate date as to when he made it.
But with the way Devi reviewed his work with such adoration… now, he felt pride. Real pride in his former abilities, and a deep, desperate desire to create something now that would make her react like this. Her expression could drive him mad; looking so brilliant and excited, with that bright smile, and eyes that shimmered just as brightly. His shoulders raised up to his ears in an attempt to quell is elation.
“Do you have more like this?” She turned her attention up to him with a grin, and Johnny held in a shiver.
“Oh—yes!” He nodded, happy to offer her more of what was currently invigorating her. “I do… but most of them are very large. Like, full-wall-size large, so they’re down in the basement… Perhaps another time?”
A nervous laugh accompanied his suggestion, and Devi nodded without argument, though a soft smile remained. She already knew what horrors he’d committed down there, and wasn’t keen on venturing down into what was formerly a demon’s torture den. Maybe next time, if there was a next time, she would have the bravura to follow him into the fucking abyss.
For now, though, she would remain satisfied with her newly excavated treasures—she could already feel her own inspiration spinning in her head in response to such fantastically morbid art. Something like these but the size of a mural? Now that she wanted to see!
--
They continued rooting through Johnny’s amassed garbage for a couple more hours, spearheaded by Devi’s eagerness to rescue as many paintings as she could from the bones of the decrepit prison that had stolen their creator away from them in the first place. By the time they were packing away all of the works that Devi wanted to bring back to the apartment, it was nightfall.
“Safe travels.” Devi commented with a smile to the stack of canvases tucked away in the back of Johnny’s car, then heaved the trunk lid closed.
Johnny stood off to the side nearby, surveying the night sky with a lofty smile. It had been a very long time since he stood in this driveway, watching the clouds drift over the starlit darkness in wispy smears. It was almost surreal how strangely foreign it felt now, but after the months of his nightly backdrop being the city’s lousy view, most often from Devi’s apartment windows, he had forgotten one of the few benefits to living in an unlit, ‘quiet’ suburb.
“What a lovely evening.” He hummed absentmindedly, and Devi turned to him with a questioning look, before moving her focus up above them.
“Yeah.” She breathed with a matching smile, and crossed her arms over her chest while she took in the view.
“On nights like this—when I lived alone—I’d always like to go up to the Hill.” Johnny said, eyes still trained on the glittering sky. Devi looked to him curiously again, and whether he felt her stare, or realized the significance of that spot between the two of them, he quickly turned to meet her with wide eyes. Devi snorted a short laugh, never taking her eyes off of him.
“Do you… want to go?” She asked him with dubious smile. Johnny stiffened at the question, grimacing at his carelessness.
“Oh—no, no, not at all! I’d never! That’s not what I—” He stopped, registering her tone only after he started his denials. “Um, well… I mean I would but, I’m not saying… I guess; do you want to go?”
Devi’s smile crinkled upwards more, teasingly, then she readjusted her arms while she looked off in thought.
She had already dredged through Johnny’s shitty little house of horrors, was she really prepared to delve even further into her freshly revived emotions tonight? It wasn’t like the hilltop was particularly connected to anything bad that happened that night, but it was still connected to said night, intricately-so. She drummed her fingers on her bicep as she debated.
She was very happy to be out of residence 777, but being there had brought her a little bit of peace. It wasn’t much, but a few hours’ worth of sifting through artwork was now the most time she had spent there, and it made the fading memories of Johnny’s Pillsbury-Doughboy-influenced attempt on her life a little less predominant. It wasn’t like she had any intention of spending more time there, but Devi did not like having any lingering fear for a dirty, eldritch-demon-housing shack, and the fact she could bear even a second inside with her head held high made her very proud.
So if she could handle such vicious, lingering resentment, surely she could handle a quick visit to a place coated with softer, waxy memories, accompanied by the individual that had made them so bitter.
“Sure.” Devi said finally, prompting a surprised half-smile from her companion. “The clouds are clearing, even.”
Johnny grinned fully, and took note of the brilliant moon starting to peer out from behind the thin clouds. He tried to quell his excitement as he urged Devi to the car, and quickly hopped into the driver’s side to begin the trip farther out of town.
--
A FEW HUNDRED FEET ABOVE THE CITY:
Johnny was already regretting his request to visit his cliffside spot.
The drive out had been as casual as all their drives were now, with idle chatter about plans for the coming days and mockery over whichever handful of bad movies they’d ingested recently. The only real difference was that it was Johnny driving tonight, and with that being the case, the music droning beneath their conversation was marginally quieter.
But, as the vehicle climbed the dirt road to the top of the hill, Johnny had become more engrossed with the details that were so comfortable and pleasant.
Things were too pleasant. The mood was too kind and light, with the crunching gravel below the car’s tires, and Devi’s tittering laughter over something dumb he’d said. It reminded him far too intimately of the atmosphere that surrounded them that night, on that damned date. How stupid, he thought as the car came to a gentle stop at the peak of the mountain’s height, that it would be such airy, nice sentiments that tore and ripped the edges of his comfort zone.
After taking a moment to walk the measly fence that skirted the edge of the cliff, he and Devi both plopped down on the end of the car’s hood. Devi sat loosely, head tilted upwards as she enjoyed the first breeze the summer season had bothered to offer her. Johnny’s posture closed in tighter the longer he watched Devi relaxing.
She was so beautiful, wonderful—the same way she was before, maybe even more so. He could hardly stand to look at her, with her skin almost iridescent under the yellowing moonlight, and her sharp, blade-like hair cutting across the stars, almost dark enough to fool the eye into thinking someone had carved two pointed shapes from the shimmering sky itself. Johnny turned his gaze to the crusty earth below, and tried to steady his mind.
“Haven’t seen a view like this in a while.” Devi murmured, eyes transfixed on the flashing of some neon signs in the downtown area. Johnny only hummed in reply.
“I was actually up in the mountains maybe… half a year ago now? But it was waaay over… there.” She pointed to an adjacent set of hills further south. Johnny lifted his head and focused on the area she was pointing to with a curious look.
“I think it was that one.” Devi said half-committally, followed by a laugh. “That was the night that plane hit my apartments—y’know, the one I told you about, with the psychic fat lady downstairs and all?”
“Ah.” He replied with a nod of comprehension. “I’m sure that was quite a sight.”
“It was. Tenna and I sat up there for like an hour before the fire finally died down. A morbidly magnificent sight—even if the burnt fat lady smell permeated all the way up here.” Devi punctuated the comment with a mean laugh, and Johnny couldn’t help but join in her cackling. Dark humor was so delightful.
As their laughter quieted, Devi set her palms flat behind her and leaned back a ways to sigh out her last chuckles. Johnny watched her with a warm smile, as captivated as always by her every move.
He loved her laugh, and being the spark that set it off always filled him with immense pride and glee. He was fortunate that her sense of humor had consistently been on the same frequency as his own, and that she was sharp enough to match, and even outrun him, in verbal banter. It made it rather fun to back-and-forth, and send each other into hysterics. They did so quite frequently at the bookstore, though if Devi wasn’t on a break, they had to muffle themselves to an extent, lest a customer complain.
A gentle push of wind across his face reminded Johnny where he was, and intertwined that knowledge with his current train of thought. His heart pulsed with sinking remorse as he remembered the events that followed their first visit to the Hill.
“I wish I’d declined.” He said suddenly, voice low.
“Huh?” Devi turned to look at him, but Johnny remained slouched forward, elbows balanced on his knees.
“When you asked me to the movies,” he clarified. “I wish I had declined.”
Devi was taken off-guard by that, but shortly scoffed, rolling back into her leaning position with a slight smile.
“Why’s that?”
Johnny finally raised his head with a look of vaguely-annoyed disbelief.
“What d’you mean ‘why’s that’?” He grunted, and Devi breathed a quick laugh at his persnickety tone. He couldn’t help but smile too, though it fell away nearly as fast as it appeared.
“Because I could have spared you… all of this.” Johnny continued. “…I’d wanted to—to say ‘no’, I mean… out of habit. But I couldn’t because I just… really wanted to go. It sounded like so much fun, I thought it would be… fun.”
He hugged himself, staring out into the darkness of the road as his thoughts led him into a myriad of ‘what if’s. Devi observed his shape with a small frown; she was very much accustomed to Johnny’s habit of allowing his emotions to swallow him up, but at this point, she felt it was pointless for him to wallow in his regrets to such a pitiful degree. Their relationship had turned pretty big, fucking corner, recently, after all.
“Was it fun?” She asked him finally, smiling like she already knew. Johnny pouted at her.
“…Well, yes.” He sighed again. “If you don’t count the attempted murder, or the immense ass-beating you gave me after.”
Devi spat out another laugh at that, and looked down to Johnny with a tired smile when he tilted his head backwards to frown about it.
“—or the fact I got you infected with lose-your-creativity-and-kill-people disease!” He snarled, and laid back fully on the car’s hood to sulk. “I just—wouldn’t that have been better? If I just said ‘no, thank you’, and we kept being friends, and maybe you had found some nice person to date that wouldn’t try to kill you?”
“And you could’ve just gone on murdering for that wall-thing forever?” Devi asked him smugly. His eyes went wide at that, and he stopped to consider the idea.
He wanted to argue that no, the creature probably would have had him die at some point—he long suspected that it was the wall-thing’s desire to regain control over it’s doughy minions that had allowed him to die in the first place—but he couldn’t know that. It was very possible that he might have gone on for his whole life, or at least long enough to allow Mr. Fuck the autonomy that he so desperately desired, and who knows how detrimental to the world that could have been.
Devi observed Johnny’s uneasy, sad expression with a shake of her head.
“Look Nny, the thing is, if there’s an eldritch fucklord that births mental parasites, that target artists and-the-like, to gorge itself on until their victim is reduced to a worthless meat-husk, I want to know about it.” She gave him nod before looking off. “I don’t have to like it, but considering that it exists and it’s happening, I’m not going wish for blissful ignorance, blabbering spittle onto my bib like a fucking infant about bullshit that doesn’t matter. And if you just learned of a plague like that, wouldn’t you want the same?”
Johnny stared at her from his spot on the hood, surprised by her response. He couldn’t believe how easily her blunt take on things still sideswiped him from time to time; he really should be used to this by now.
“Heh… yeah, I guess so.” He looked off with a hesitant smile. Devi smirked with another roll of her head.
“And as absolutely horrible as it is, my… involvement meant that you died before things really got ugly… I’m still not happy about it, but I guess if you couldn’t truly ‘die’ no matter what, it’s not so bad, especially seeing as you’re free now.” She paused. “Well, mostly free.”
“GEE, THANKS.” Johnny laughed, and Devi arched into another laugh too. The pair giggled over their horrid luck for a few minutes, before Johnny’s mind settled on an old memory.
“Hey, do you remember that joke you said, after you told me you liked me?” His smile stretched wide enough to give a mischievous squint to his eyes. “About how you’d kill me?”
Devi blinked at him, mouth drawn low, before breaking into laughter again. She redoubled into hysterics when Johnny joined her, and she held her face in her hands while he gave the metal beneath them a few slaps amidst his cackling.
“WELL, YOU DID.” He reiterated the point, and Devi gave him a shove.
“Shut UP, Nny!” She laughed, and turned away from him to try and quiet herself, with limited success.
--
OFF TO A NEARBY 24/7:
Johnny winced his left eye shut as he gave the straw of his Brain-Freezy one more voracious suck, hoping to gather the last of the watery remains of sugar from the air bubbles at the bottom of his cup, but only really achieved making a repeating, cacophonous sound. Devi smacked him with the back of her hand, in a wordless way of saying ‘knock that off’.
They had stopped at the first 24/7 they saw, one on a normally unventured side of town, to pick up some snacks before returning home. The large advertisement in the window featuring disgusting gas station nachos had reminded them both that they hadn’t eaten since early that afternoon, and the lure of 2-for-1 deals on just about everything was hard to pass up.
“I think you got it all.” Devi said, flicking a crumb of tortilla chip off the corner of her mouth with her thumb. Johnny pouted at her before flinging the empty cup cleanly into the nearby garbage can.
“I’m trying not to be wasteful!” He defended himself as he started the walk back to the car. The rub of material against his neck reminded him of the goddamn collar he wore, and how the leash Devi had insisted on putting on him before they entered the store was, in fact, on him. She needed to have a little more faith! Just because they were in an even shittier part of town than normal, didn’t mean he would run off on a murderous rampage at the drop of a hat!
“Oh, you’re so frugal, my wallet thanks you.” Devi replied with a sarcastic smile, matching his stride as they made their way to the side of the building, where Johnny had parked.
Just when they thought they’d escaped humanity unscathed, a quick whistle hit their ears, and both eyerolled in the direction of God, to ask him with mixed expressions ‘why’. Devi and Johnny both turned toward the source of the sound, Devi looking somewhere between bored and irritated, and Johnny glowering just past her shoulder. She was unsurprised to see the group of men chatting idly on the other side of the small parking lot gesture in her direction.
“Heyyy, that’s kinda kinky—WOAH.” One of the men called, then stopped suddenly. He pushed himself off of the side of a car and started to approach them. “—No way!”
Just as both Devi and Johnny’s fight-or-flight responses had reached their peaks, the man spoke again.
“DEVI?” He said loudly, with an obnoxious smile. Devi blanched. The man had very few features she would find memorable; patchy dyed hair, brown eyes, tall and thin—could have been any number of guys she’d hung out with before… except for the eyepatch.
“Eddie!?” Devi replied with a horrified expression, and Johnny’s irises snapped to her, shocked that she actually knew this person. Eddie’s lip perked up further on one side, and he slapped a hand over his cheek with a laugh.
“WOW, it’s been forever, huh?” He gleamed. “But I knew it was you, cause of your face.”
Devi only stared at him with vague disgust, still too shocked to fully absorb the situation. She hadn’t hardly thought about this particular idiot since high school, the recent retelling of their failed date withstanding. Johnny scowled at their uninvited guest, but did his best to hold back the volatile feelings he already had churning in his gut.
“Who’s this little guy you’re with? Your boyfriend?” Eddie asked casually, without a braincell to stop him. He set the side of his hand against his mouth, and leaned further in Johnny’s direction, as if to whisper, only to say at a completely normal volume; “Don’t count on getting too much outta her—she’s hot, but she’s a total prude.”
Johnny stared at him with incensed disbelief at the comment, as did Devi. With thin pupils, Johnny jutted forward, still crouched, to rebuke the remark.
“NEVER speak about Devi in such a repugnant way—in fact, never speak about her at ALL, you cycloptic knuckle-dragger!” He hissed. Devi could only cringe as her mouth twitched into an uncomfortable scowl.
“Hey, don’t blame me for warning you dude, it’s true!” Eddie defended himself. “I took her out, paid for everything, and she wouldn’t even kiss me. I had to be dying before she agreed to at least sit on my face.”
“I NEVER SAT ON YOUR FACE, YOU DUMBASS.” Devi snapped, face hot. “That was the AIRBAG.”
“—See! That’s even worse. My dying wish, and she’d sooner just let me die empty-handed.”
“SHUT UP!” Johnny seethed, bowing out his stance. “Shut you fucking mouth—I’ll cut your dirty GODDAMN THROAT! You don’t deserve the privilege of speaking, you boorish ogre—I’d be doing the world a damn FAVOR redirecting your vocal chords into your ear canals! Maybe then you could hear the UNBRIDLED FILTH THAT EXPECTORATES OFF YOUR TONGUE!! I—”
While he ranted, Devi stood beside him, vibrating in insult. Eddie was her first ‘real’ date, and he was horrible one at that—she would have gladly never seen his dumb ass again. In fact, she had kind of hoped he had died in different sexually-motivated car wreck in the years since she last saw him, but obviously she had no such luck. The smarmy fucker, acting like he knew her, acting like he had any comprehension of who she was, or what drove her physically. BASTARD! Ugly, horrible bastard!
Devi bared her teeth; she wanted retribution! Her body ached, with pulsating, twitching fists, to obliterate Eddie where he stood. Her mind floated away from level-headedness, her anger coaxing her ever-closer to violence, tantalizing her with the beautiful release of emotion she’d be granted with a few kicks to his head. But, as her trembling hand squeeze the handle of Johnny’s leash, her cracking logic had a quick, hateful idea. She didn’t give herself time to reconsider, she just wanted out of this situation.
With wide, angry eyes, Devi stared at Eddie, then released her hold on Johnny and retreated to the car.
Johnny felt the tether around his neck go slack, and swiveled his head around in surprise to watch Devi’s withdrawing form.
“Aren’t you going to stop me!?” He yelled to her. Devi opened the car door and turned back to him with a glare.
“Stop you from what?” She said with a biting tone, then dipped into the car with a loud SLAM! of the door.
Johnny stared at where she had just stood, dumbfounded, then moved his attention to the loose leash dangling from his neck. After a few moments of consideration, a grim smile spread across his face. He was rather certain that Devi was, quite literally, turning a cheek to this exchange—and if she was leaving it up to him, Eddie would not be leaving unscathed for those repulsive comments.
He raised his head, and his posture, with dark shadows swallowing up his grinning face. Eddie cocked an uncertain eyebrow when he heard the creak of the vehicle’s trunk, and only looked more confused when met with the sight of the tire iron that appeared from behind Johnny’s back.
Johnny stepped closer, happy that the exchange had garnered the attention of the rest of Eddie’s little group; he hoped they would intervene, they were all just as shitty in his eyes! A set of eerily slow laughs emitted from his throat, that slowly hiccupped into something maniacal, as he brought up his weapon up above his head.
--
“That was baaad, Devi.” Johnny sung in a teasing tone while he drove, blood still smattered on his face and hands. Devi sulked in the passenger seat, glaring at the street signs as they passed them.
“Whatever.” She grumbled. Johnny giggled in reply; he rather liked when she was feeling vindictive.
“NOT TO WORRY,” He boasted earnestly. “I didn’t kill any of them—I knew you wouldn’t like that, so I only gave them all a some blunt-force trauma, just a bit of facial bludgeoning, promise!”
Devi looked to him with a grouchy frown, but rolled her eyes away after a moment, face falling into mock-boredom.
“Thank you, Nny.” She sighed. At least someone had some self-control tonight. She could only hope that her choice to let Johnny dish out the ass whooping that her wrath had so desperately craved had no adverse effects on his self-restraint—they’d both worked too hard to ruin it over Eddie of all things.
“You are ever-so welcome, Devi.” Johnny smiled, happy to exact some vengeance in the name of his dearest friend.
“Who was that moron, anyhow?” He asked casually. Devi huffed.
“Just some dick I dated in high school.” Another eyeroll. “He was the first guy to ever ask me out—I told you how it went, didn’t I? The date was bland and meaningless, but he thought it went well. The genius tried to convince me to screw him while he was driving, and when I said ‘no’ he tried to push the point and crashed the fucking car into a tree. Dumbass.”
Devi sneered at the memory, but was quickly shaken out of her thoughts when the car took a violent turn, leaving her to yelp and grasp onto the center console for balance. She snapped her head in Johnny’s direction as he drove at an increasingly fast speed.
“Nny, what the Hell!” She shouted at him, but Johnny was too focused on the road.
“WELL YOU DIDN’T SAY THAT!” He replied aggressively. “I’M GOING TO FINISH KILLING HIM.”
“NO, NNY.” Devi yelled, drastically grabbing for him, or the wheel, or both. Johnny shrugged her away, doing what he could to use his shoulder to keep her from interfering with his burning desire to murder. “Johnny!!”

“Drake! Leave him alone...” Riley pleaded, she knew that he was only protecting his niece- but she also knew what he was like when he was angry. His temper could make the younger generation tremble.
Letting go immediately of Theo, he shook his head assuming that he had gone too far. Thank you, she whispered in his ear.
“What are you doing here?”
“Ayah invited me. I’m so sorry...”
“Mom, you can’t exactly criticise us. You was flitting between my father and Drake!” Riley’s eyes widened, she had never heard her daughter speak to her this way. Never mind calling Drake just ‘Drake’. It was always Uncle.
“Apologise to your Mom, now. That isn’t fair Ayah!”
“No! Myself and Theo are adults. Not kids as you all refer us too.”
“Ayah, shut up!” Louis shouted towards his older sister after seeing his Moms eyes begin to leak.
“Theo, please go home. Or I’ll contact your mother...” Riley began to walk back inside the cabin- knowing she needed to sort this situation out but she needed time to think.
“Mom, wait!”
****
Drake called a cab for Theo, he and Ayah decided to escort him home. The ride was mute, neither young adult wanting to annoy Drake anymore. Deep down Ayah knew that she had deceived everybody. Deep down she knew she shouldn’t have invited her boyfriend without permission. Deep down she didn’t mean to say hurtful things to upset her Mom.
“I’m sorry, I love you.”
“I love you too, Princess. I’ll text you.” Drake watched the two of them express their love, he knew that he couldn’t prevent the two of them falling in love. He knew it was none of his business- she wasn’t his daughter. Believing that he should butt out next time.
“What have you done now? Walker get off my land!”
“Fuck you, Madeleine. I don’t want to be here either. Explain to your son that he isn’t welcome on my land when not invited!”
“My son is going to be your future king! Watch your mouth, Walker!” Drake laughed, hestically out loud. Much to the annoyance of Neville and Madeleine who both provided him with the same expression- a scowl.
“Are you going to explain to the Earl, Ayah?”
“Countess Madeleine, Earl Neville- my brother is taking over the throne. Not myself.” The Vancouver’s jaws nearly dropped to the ground. They wasn’t aware of this ‘news’.
“So looks like you lost out of the crown yet again, Countess.” Drake smirked, he looked at Theo who clearly hadn’t informed his parents of Ayahs decision.
“Inside now, Theo!” Madeleine was more annoyed with the fact that Riley didn’t tell her, whenever they spoke about the social season plans- Riley explained that the suitors were all sorted and asked Madeleine to just concentrate on the event schedule. Now she realised why Riley refused to elaborate on the suitors details.
Drake and Ayah entered the cab again, as angry as he was with her still- he looked over towards her as she was crying. Holding her hand, he assumed that she would push him away- instead she snuggled into him.
“Do... do you think he loves me? Or was he only with me because they thought he would be King? Daddy told me that he is different to them. That he could see that Theo loved me....”
“Your father knew?”
“He knew for years... Mom only knew when I told her that I was abdicating. She had an inkling that I was in a relationship. She believed it was with Jackson though... but he’s seeing Elena.”
“Why didn’t he tell your Mom? You know your Mom thinks that you and Theo are just a fling or so she hopes... Jackson’s seeing Elena?”
“I begged him not to. I know how much Mom hates Madeleine and Neville hence why we kept it a secret all this time. Yeah, I thought you’d have known?”
“What is it with you lot keeping secrets? Any other secrets that I need to know about?”
“Bartie lost his virginity to Chloe...” Shrugging her shoulders it was the only thing she could think about that wouldn’t get her brother or Jackson in any kind of trouble. I’m surprised Leo hasn’t murdered Bartie. Drake couldn’t be a hypocrite towards them all- they all did irresponsible things as children/ young adults too. It’s only natural.
“Okay gossip girl, anything else?”
“You love Mom still?” First Louis, now Ayah. Why can’t they give me a break? Drake thought to himself, believing that sooner rather than later the two of them would be impersonating Cilla Black.
“I’ll always love your Mom, Ayah. Always. As I love all of you. When we get back you need to apologise to her. And next time, keep quiet- your Mom has very good hearing!”
“I will do. I’m sorry. I love you, Uncle grumpy.” Snuggling back into Drake, he held his niece tightly- hoping that Theo wasn’t going to hurt her. If so, himself and Leo wouldn’t hold back.
****
An hour had past since Theo was escorted home. Louis stayed with his mom, they remained in silence.
“Are you going to come back out? I think we’ve all sobered up due to Ayah’s drama - again.”
“I’m fine, Louis. Go back to sleep- or socialise with the others.”
“What Ayah said about you with Dad and Uncle Drake...She didn’t mean it. We all make mistakes, we all fall in love. She should know, I mean she could have had anyone and she chose a Vancouver..” Shuddering at the thought, he wasn’t usually one to pass comment on both of his sister’s relationships.
“I know she didn’t mean it. It was the heat of the moment. I’m fine honestly. Enjoy your last days of freedom.”
“Everyone loves you Mom, some more than others.” Quirking her eyebrows she assumed he meant her children.
“Mom?” Running up to her, her not so little princess pulled her in for a tight hug. “I’m so sorry. I’m a bitch. I didn’t mean what I said. I love you so much, I don’t want to lose you too.”
“You’re not going to lose me. Not yet anyway. I love you, Ayah Olivia Rys. Next time make sure that none of us see his you know what. How are you my daughter? Did I not teach you to be sneaky like I was?” Winking at her, she decided to have a laugh at her own expense. Knowing that she couldn’t change what had happened in the past.
“Difference between you and I Mother, is that I only love, Theo. I can’t blame you though, my Father and Uncle Drake are very attractive.”
“They are. I’m going to check on your Uncle Maxi. I’ll see you both in the morning. Anymore surprises before I go to sleep?”
“No. But....” Ayah looked at Louis, as if they knew what they were both thinking.
“Uncle Drake loves you. You love him.”
“Of course I love him, he’s one of my dearest friends. I love all of your uncles, Aunt Liv and Aunt Beth.” The two of them looked at each other, knowing she was hiding her true feelings. Giving the two of them a tight hug, she paused looking at them both adorably. Even though Ayah was her mini me, she could still see Liam in her as well as Louis and Ellie.
****
Drake was acting like a King’s guard. Impersonating his late father in some way. Making sure that all the young adults were all asleep- alone, with no further unexpected visitors. After his heart to heart with his goddaughter - he really didn’t trust any of them now, after Ayah’s confessions regarding them all. Walking into the cabin, he shook his head as he saw Riley and Maxwell top ‘n’ tailing on the couch. Maxwell was sprawled out- almost suffocating her.
“Hey...” whispering in her ear, she was far too deep in sleep to respond. Knowing he was about to break his back potentially- due to his age, he scooped her up in his arms and carried her into the spare bedroom. Gently placing the duvet over her, he made sure that she was comfy- before kissing her on the forehead.
“Drake?”
“Sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you. You looked so uncomfortable- and Maxwell could have potentially had a boxing fight with you in his sleep.”
“Wouldn’t be the first time... you look tired. What time is it?”
“Just gone three. I’ll leave you to it. I thought we could all go hiking tomorrow? Or fishing? That’s if you’re all up for it?”
“Sounds great!” Apart from the fishing part. “Can you stay with me? Or wake sleeping beauty up and ask him to stay with me? I know I sound pathetic but ... I can’t sleep, I always wake up. Crying.”
“It’s not pathetic, maybe Maxwell should stay with you though Brooks- because of our past.”
“We’re friends Drake. I’m not going to do a ‘Ayah’ on ya.” Gulping, she saw his Adam Apple bob up and down. Regretting what she said- she bit her lip.
“It doesn’t matter, Drake. I’ll be fine. Night.” Rolling on to her side, she sighed- regretting feeling needy. Hearing the door close, she debated whether or not to go and sleep next to Maxwell again.
“You’re back.”
“Of course I am, I can’t sleep next to the Queen butt naked. I’m always here for you, Ri.”
“I know you are. Ditto...” Slipping next to her, she immediately rest her head onto his chest.
“Thank you, goodnight Drake.”
“Night, Riley.” Holding onto her, she slowly fell asleep-wiping the tears that continued leaking from her eyes he hoped that she would sleep well.
****
A few hours later, Drake woke up spooning Riley. Before she noticed he immediately turned around- he was there to comfort her only, however Mother Nature thought otherwise. As he rolled over, his eyes widened at the figure who would now be nicknamed as Cordonia’s ‘peeping Tom’.
“Morning, Romeo!”
“Max! Get out of here now!”
“What did I tell ya about being too old to fuck. You sneaky bastards....”
“We didn’t do anything! She’s my friend.”
“You’re bedroom is next door though... ya can’t kid a kidder bestie...”
“It was you or I that was going to be sleeping next to her. You had passed out. Nothing happened. I swear, Max. She laid on my chest, fell asleep. Then she rolled on to her side. Why am I even explaining myself to you?”
“Will you both just shut the fuck up? Jesus, Max! Why do you keep insisting on waking people up?”
“Sorry, your Majesty. So besties, what are the plans for today?”
“You’re going home Beaumont!” Drake said sarcastically, already fed up of being accused of something that he hasn’t done.
“Woah, harsh Walker. So Ri, what are we doing?”
“You are leaving this room now, so I can get ready for the day.”
Pulling Drake to the side, she immediately noticed his morning glory. Pretending that she didn’t, he already knew that she had - it was too obvious not to.
“Drake... thank you for staying with me. I really appreciate it. I think it’s first night I’ve actually slept well considering how short it was.”
“No probs... erm... I better go and sort myself out. I’ll come down and make everyone something to eat...”
****
Riley walked downstairs and was immediately greeted by an audience wearing the same cheesy grin.
“What?”
“Did you sleep well, Auntie Riley?”
“Yes, thank you Jackson.” Feeling paranoid, she shot Maxwell a look- knowing that he had gossiped about her sleeping arrangements.
“Hey, don’t blame me. They all wondered where the Queen and Sir was... I couldn’t lie, Ri.”
“To put you all straight, myself and my best friend Drake slept next to each other. He comforted me. I’ve not slept well since Liam di- left...”
“Are you okay?” Feeling his hand linger on her shoulder, she wasn’t sure as to why she had to explain herself. She had slept next to Maxwell plenty of times when Liam was abroad for meetings. But because it was Drake this time, she felt paranoid that they would all criticise her from ‘moving on’ so quick.
“Maxwell, I need your help. Now!”
“What’s up buddy? What do ya need me to do?”
“Stop spreading shit. She seems uncomfortable again. We’ve just got her back slightly to her being herself. You don’t want to push her away.”
“No one is bothered if you both fucked each other. Just saying. But don’t worry- I won’t mention anything more. But if my godchildren ask me questions I’m not gonna lie to them.”
****
“Mom?”
“Yeah?”
“Are you okay? You seem quiet. We aren’t bothered that the two of you shared a bed you know...”
“I’m fine, Ellie. Honestly.”
“How about when we go back home, we all just have a big huge slumber party? Just us Rys’s.”
“That sounds great sweetheart.”
“I love you, Mom. I’ll remind Ayah, no Vancouver’s allowed! Or Beaumont’s - specifically the single middle aged Beaumont.” Ellie whispered, not wanting to cause anymore ‘Ayah Drama’.
“Here, tuck in everyone. I’ll be back in a minute.” Placing the food in the middle of the table, everybody knew that Drake was an amazing host, as well as cook. Not sitting down with everyone, he grabbed some apples from the fruit basket before making his way to the door.
“Where are you going?” Riley questioned him. Not that it was any of her business. She was just curious.
“Just to feed Starlight. Why?”
“I just wondered. That’s all. I’ll round these lot up for that hike and fishing trip.”
****
“Hey, girl... here you go.”
“I swear you love her more than you do me...” Jackson said whilst smirking.
“I swear that you love Elena more than me...”
“How do you know? Ayah....”
“Why couldn’t you tell me?”
“You’re still grieving over Mom and Uncle Liam. My love life isn’t important.” Placing his hands into his pockets, he focused his gaze to the floor. Unlike people such as Lydia Vancouver, he was selfless- his life didn’t need to be broadcasted.
“I’m still your father. I’m still here, for anything.”
“I suppose we are as bad as each other.”
“What do you mean?”
“You and Aunt Ri. I don’t know why you are both hiding your feelings. I love, Elena. I’m only half noble, I’m not sure if Leo and Beth would approve of our relationship- hence why we are keeping it hidden. Hence why I didn’t want to be a suitor for Ayah when she was the next in line. If I can admit all of that now, you need to admit it too.”
“Jackson... Leo isn’t going to criticise you for not being ‘full noble’... regarding Riley... she was the first woman that I ever loved. I still love her, but as a friend. That is it...”
“Okay.” Whatever, he thought to himself. “Come on, they will be waiting for us.”
****
After a long hike, everybody was exhausted and ready for bed. However they all promised to go fishing, one of Drakes favourite hobbies. Riley was hesitant at first- every since her accident she had grown a phobia with lakes/rivers.
The young lady that was pulled out of the Hudson River, early hours yesterday morning has now been named by NYPD as Riley Brooks, a 25year old waitress and barmaid from Manhattan. Miss Brooks is currently in an unstable condition in hospital. Two witnesses who were walking by at the time that Miss Brooks apparently entered the water, bravely jumped in the river and pulled her body to the river bank, where she received CPR after suffering a suspected cardiac arrest. There was support from other witnesses, who helped the two brave people also. Miss Brooks was then immediately rushed to hospital, as were the witnesses for a check up. No foul play is suspected at this time, however Detective David McDonald has requested if any other witnesses could come forward The previous day before this tragic incident, Miss Brooks had reported her ex partner to NYPD for domestic abuse. It is known that the well spoke about Lawyer, Nate Cooper had abused the victim for months, including hospitalising her on more than one occasion. Leo Rhys, a friend of Miss Brooks also became a victim to Mr Cooper’s violent outbursts. The man is currently in custody with the Boston Police Force.
I took my shoes off, and sat on the edge of the muddy riverbank, taking in the last memory of the beautiful scenery surrounding me. Pulling my purse out of my bag, I stared longingly at the black and white picture- my baby. Raising the picture to my mouth, I kissed it- mommy is coming to be with you angel, I’m sorry, I’ll see you soon and protect you and love you like I should have loved you in this world.
Leaving all my possessions on the side of the riverbank as if they were lost property, I timidly walked over to the water. Dipping my toes into the ice cold flowing water, sent a shock through my body. Could I do this, I thought? Having second doubts, I looked up to the beautiful sunrise, looking around making sure no one was there. I had to jump- no more second chances, no more time to doubt. It was no or never. My heart jumped out of my skin as I entered the water. I gave up. I’m sorry.
When Drake suggested fishing, he had completely forgotten how irresponsible it was of him to suggest this.
“We could do something else, we don’t need to do this..”
“It’s fine, just promise me that you and Max will hold on to me if I panic.. I’ll be fine...” I hope.
“If you change your mind, I’ll take us back. I promise, I’ll be next to you.” Drake walked into the water to hold onto the boat, and to also assist Riley safely on it.
“This is so relaxing...” Riley sighed, as she sat back on the boat. Drake provided her with a soft smile as he held on to the rod. They had been on the boat for a while now, and she seemed to be enjoying it. In Drake’s eyes he was relieved that she had overcome a fear, he was also relieved that Maxwell decided to get so drunk on the hike that he had passed out. Again. Silence is bliss.
“Hopefully we’ll catch something. I think I’m losing my touch looking over at their collection of catches...”
“It’s because you’re old now, Walker.”
“I maybe old, but I’m still talented at things Brooks...”
“Oh yeah? Like what?” Blushing, he didn’t know what to say. He assumed that she wouldn’t call him out in a response.
“I.... Erm....”
“Have I rendered you speechless?”
“Maybe?”
“Let me have a go....”
Maxwell woke up from his slumber, forgetting where they were. Forgetting exactly what they was doing. Seeing his two friends incredibly close to one an another, he wondered how long it would be until they found solace with each other. A mischievous grin formed on to his face- deciding to rock the boat. Not realising how much strength he had until both Riley and Drake fell into the lake. “Oops!”
“Riley!” Drake swam up to the surface immediately scrutinising for Riley- unable to find her location, he dove under water. Finding her, he raced over and helped her. Knowing that she was panicking, his main aim was to quickly get her to safety and back to the cabin.
Coughing as they got back to the surface, Drake wiped her damp stray pieces of hair away from her face.
“Are you okay?” Stupid fucking question. Of course she isn’t okay.
“Yeah. Fucking Maxwell...”
“I thought I’d lost you, I couldn’t see you at first.” Unable to stop crying, flashbacks roamed through her mind.
“You’d never lose me.... thank you, for saving me.” Holding on to Drake for dear life as he tread water, she eventually wrapped her legs around him. Needing to feel safe. Luckily, Drake was a strong swimmer.
“Guys, I’m so sorry.... I’m like the Hulk and didn’t realise it...”
“Pull a trick like that again Beaumont, and I swear you won’t make it to your next birthday! Help me get Ri, back onto the boat...”
****
Arriving back at the cabin, shock from the events had soon disappeared- instead along with their children they laughed about it whilst providing Maxwell with dagger eyes every so often. Both Riley and Drake sat close to the fire, both feeling as if they had pneumonia. Once they got back on their boat, Jackson took his shirt off and threw it to them for Riley as she was shivering like a shitting dog.
“Hey, blossom. So when I was looking for some clothes for ya to wear- I was debating whether or not to ‘borrow’ one of Drake’s infamous jackets... but then I came across this... I believe it is yours anyway...”
“Aww I’m so in love with her already. I can’t help but snuggle her... Congratulations to you both.” Hana said to Liam and Riley as she held a new born Ayah.
“Hana, I hope you’re going to be snuggling her until she gets too big.. myself and Liam was hoping that you and Drake would be two of her many godparents...” Hana began crying, Riley was aware as to why the over dramatic expression from her best friend.
“We’d love to be.. thank you both so much...”
“I’ve got a present for you as well Han, but I’ll need to wash them all first. I don’t want to offend you so if you don’t want them it’s fine...” Hana provided her with a perplexed expression- Riley would never offend her, they were the best of friends after all.
“My maternity dresses, the ones that you always admired. I don’t think we will be having anymore children- if so it won’t be for a while. So they are yours if you want them. Drake didn’t tell me by the way, I figured it out - he just confirmed it.”
“You are the best friend anyone could ask for! I’d be honoured to borrow your dresses. If it’s a boy, there may be wedding bells in the future.”
“It’s... its .... one of my dresses... I gave it to, Hana. She insisted on giving me it back- but I refused... she suited it so much better anyway... even after having Jackson she wore them well with her fashion sense... I’m sorry, I need some air...” Everybody jumped up, hesitating whether or not to follow her before sighing at Maxwell in unison.
“What, I didn’t think I’d upset her... I just seem to be fucking up a lot recently...”
“No shit Sherlock! I’ll go and see to her...”
“Drake, I’m sorry...”
“I’m sorry too Max, you wasn’t to know how she would react... just see if all of her clothes are dry. Don’t cause anymore calamities...”
****
Hey, handsome. You will never believe what happened yesterday- I’m sorry I didn’t ring you as I usually do. I wish that you could be here to berate our daughter. Myself and the kids, Maxwell too- decided to spend time at the cabin before the social season. Ayah decided to invite Theo without telling anyone- we caught them doing... you know what... oh, Liam. What am I going to do with her? I imagine her antics are what you had to suffer with Leo when he was that age. Maxwell nearly killed me today as well. In a fucking lake. Typical. I panicked but I didn’t want anyone to know. I know how protective you would have been. Drake was furious with him. Why'd you have to leave so soon? Why'd you have to go? Why'd you have to leave me when I needed you the most? Give me all the strength I need. To carry on. I need it, Li. I’ve just broken down because Maxwell gave me my old maternity dress to wear that I gave to Hana. You remember, that flowery one that she adored. I’ve come out of my shell a bit, I’ve got all these muppets supporting me- especially Drake. I feel guilty but I slept next to him last night. I hope you don’t mind. I love you with all my heart, Liam. I miss you every second of each day. Everything’s going to be a bit hectic from a few days time- I’m not sure if I’ll be able to ring you every night. But you will always be on my mind- guiding us all, helping Louis become King. When I see you again.
“Hey... what are you doing?” She’s just rung Liam, shit. Perfect timing Walker.
“I needed to talk to Liam. I’m also feeling embarrassed for my emotional outburst over a maternity dress.. it’s little things like that, that trigger off happy memories. If it was the other way around, Hana wouldn’t have reacted the way I did.”
“Don’t be embarrassed. I suppose Maxwell didn’t want you wearing my commoner clothes.. remember you always used to take the piss?”
“Heh, yeah that shit. You look handsome in a suit though...”
“I still managed to make you fall in love with me once upon a time, wearing that shit...”
“You did...” Pausing, she didn’t want to elaborate. Their relationship was happy memories but was overruled by negative ones. “We all love you Drake, we just take the piss because you get so arsy easily. With Maxwell he just accepts that he’s the ‘clown’ of the group and laughs at his own expense.”
“Don’t I know it... why do you think I still call you Brooks? Because it annoys the hell out of you... it’s my little revenge...”
“I don’t mind it, not really. It’s our little thing.”
“I’ll have to think back to everything that annoyed you- just to get my own back then...”
“I’ve got a long list about how you annoyed me in the past. How you hurt me. But it’s all in the past...”
“I was a jerk... I grew up a lot after everything that I put you through. I’m so fucking sorry.”
“You don’t have to apologise. You’ve made up for it a million times over. Besides, you brought me back to Liam. You found happiness with Hana. This year we’d have been celebrating our child’s twenty fifth birthday...crazy isn’t it?” Closing her eyes, a few tears leaked and fell down her cheek. Not only due to the miscarriage. But how it occurred.
“Yeah, every day I imagined what it would have been like. I didn’t like to think about it that much, especially in front of Hana and Li. It wasn’t fair to them. But I always did, Jackson is my child - but ours was my first child. I will never forget about it even if we never met it.” Hearing him say that, broke her heart. She had the same thoughts- she still had the picture of the scan in her memory box. Unknowingly to anyone, she looked at it on the anniversary of the day she lost their baby. As well as the baby’s due date. Knowing that Liam would have comforted her, if he knew that she did this- but as Drake said, it wasn’t fair on their spouses. Taking a deep breath, she decided to change the subject before she became an emotional wreck- yet again.
“Why didn’t you and Hana have anymore children?”
“We we’re blessed with Jackson. He was healthy. Obviously I’d have wanted more, but Hana didn’t after the labour. I love my wife so if she was happy I was happy. I had a vasectomy shortly after that. Besides I’ve got my godchildren who are practically like my own anyway.”
“He’s a credit to you both.... this is getting far too sentimental. I’m ready to go back if you are?” Holding his hand outwards her, she intertwined her fingers with his as they ambled back towards the cabin. Content in each other’s company.

how everything turns away quite leisurely from the disaster
Also available on AO3!
A/N: This is another commission fic for @dandelionfunky, who asked for “the FMAB ‘Edward impaled on rebar scene,’ but with MASH RNWP Hawkeye present.” I….got really carried away this time, but I’m happy with the results.
Warnings for...honestly, the canon content of that scene, but with slightly more discussion of the possibility of child death, because unlike everyone there in canon, Pierce is a real doctor who knows stomach wounds are Bad.
Small sections of the dialogue are directly from the Viz translation of the manga, so credit to the English translators and Viz.
The temptation to name this “oh look, i’ve been impaled” was strong, but I instead took the title from W. H. Auden’s “Musee de Beaux Arts.” Truly quarantine has inspired me to new levels of pretentiousness.
how everything turns away quite leisurely from the disaster
Benjamin Franklin Pierce, “Hawkeye” to friends who didn’t already have a terrifying sniper they knew by that name, woke up slowly. His head was pounding, and his throat was intolerably dry. He inhaled, and coughed on the dusty air, only to find that just coughing was enough to make his body ache. What had happened?
He remembered chasing after Ed when he ran after that Kimblee fellow, the one who’d been condemned by Amestris’s brutal military government for being too murder-happy, and failing to catch up. He’d gotten winded, and then the hallway had filled first with smoke and then with foul-smelling gas. Then he’d finally caught a flash of red and gold and—
The building had come down.
He got up, or tried to. It didn’t work so well, because he was under a pile of concrete and steel beams. He felt pretty badly bruised, but nothing seemed broken, and if he was bleeding, he couldn’t tell.
This must’ve been Kimblee--Ed could be reckless with himself, but he was obsessively careful with everyone else. He’d never bring down a building unless he was certain he could do it without killing anyone inside. And Pierce wasn’t dead, or in danger of dying, but if some of the rubble had landed a few feet over…
Electricity crackled, and stone hands shot up out of the ground, lifting the rubble away. Pierce wriggled out from underneath as quickly as he could, before the pile shifted and he got trapped again. He couldn’t help breathing a sigh of relief at the sight of a transmutation that was so obviously Ed’s. If he was awake enough to do such delicate work, he had to be in decent condition, right?
He got to his feet, shakily, as Ed transmuted the room into something resembling its original condition. His clothes were a bit torn up, and he probably needed monitoring for internal bleeding, but he didn’t see any serious wounds.
Someone on the other side of the room made a noise of surprise, and Pierce looked over to see a gorilla and a lion wearing Amestrian military uniforms. Still didn’t quite compare to, say, Envy, but it sure was a weird sight.
“So, in Kimblee’s eyes, we’re just pawns to be sacrificed, are we?” the lion muttered as his companion exclaimed in pain. “That b*stard!”
Another spot of movement caught Pierce’s eye, and he decided to ignore the animal-people in favor of Ed, who was lying on the ground, with something that looked suspiciously like metal sticking out of his back.
Not sticking out of his back, Pierce realized, as he got closer. It’s through his stomach.
Pierce wasn’t an idiot. If anything, he was a bit of a medical genius. But there were some wounds that he would be hard pressed to treat even in a fully supplied hospital, and this was one of them. As things were, he barely had the resources to make Ed comfortable before he passed.
Sh*t, is he even sixteen yet? Pierce thought, followed almost immediately by, Who the h*ll is gonna tell Mustang? What about his brother, or that mechanic of his?
He knelt down in front of Ed, who regarded him blearily.
“Hey, kid,” he said. “Thanks for cleaning up the rubble, but you can rest now.”
“He’s still alive?” one of the soldiers asked, coming over to them.
“How come you saved us, Fullmetal?” the other asked. “You’re in worse shape than we are.”
Pierce gave them both a sharp look.
“Can’t…rest…yet….” Ed rasped, startling all three of them.
“Don’t think you have a lot of choice on that one,” Pierce said, and wow, there really was a lot of dust in here; his throat was so dry that his voice was cracking.
“Need…you two…to pull this…” he put a hand around the rebar sticking out of his stomach, “out of me.”
“Ed, that’s not going to fix it,” Pierce said.
“Trust me,” Ed said.
“Which one of us went to medical school?” Pierce said.
“Yeah…but I’m…an alchemist,” Ed said, with a wavering echo of his normal cocky grin.
“What the h*ll are you planning?” Pierce said. “You’ve said before you don’t know a lot about medical alchemy.”
“Learned some…back when we were planning…human transmutation,” Ed said.
“Even then,” one of the soldiers, the one who looked like a gorilla, ventured, “I heard that the only reason Mr. Kimblee survived being impaled by Scar was because the doctors had a Philosopher’s Stone.”
“I’m gonna…use my life force,” Ed said.
“That sounds really dangerous, kid,” Pierce said.
“Yeah,” Ed said. “But I’ll die…if I don’t, right?”
“Yeah,” Pierce said softly. He looked over at the soldiers. “I’m a doctor. If we leave him like this or try to get him to a hospital as he is, he’ll absolutely die.”
The soldiers looked at one another.
“We were never actually ordered to kill him,” the gorilla-like one said.
“He saved us,” the lion-like one said. “And I’d really rather not leave a kid to die.”
“This is really gonna hurt though,” the gorilla-like one warned.
Ed’s grin stretched out. “Won’t…be the worst I’ve had.”
It was horrific to watch, and Pierce was sure it would be engraved on his memory for the rest of his life. The screaming, the squelch of blood and flesh, the flickering light of transmutation. It seemed to drag on forever.
But finally, it was over, and Ed was still and silent, the bloody rebar discarded on the ground nearby.
Mechanically, Pierce took his pulse.
“He’s still alive,” he said.
“Can’t get rid of me that easily,” Ed confirmed weakly.
“I’ll be,” the gorilla-like soldier exclaimed. “Guess alchemists don’t need doctors!”
“Nah, all I did was stop the bleeding and put the undamaged organs back together,” Ed said. “I’ll need a real surgeon soon. Any of you guys know any?”
“You are such a brat,” Pierce breathed. The blurriness in his vision was absolutely not tears.
“Gotta catch up Kimblee…” Ed added.
“Yeah, not until I make sure you reconnected your insides the right way,” Pierce said. He turned to the soldiers. “Can I trust you guys to help me get him out of here?”
“He saved our lives,” the gorilla-like one said. “We owe him.”
“I’ll carry him,” the lion-like one volunteered.
“Thanks,” Pierce said. “Name’s Dr. Benjamin Franklin Pierce,”
“I’m Heinkel, and that’s Darius,” the lion-like chimera said. “We used to work for Kimblee, but I think we’ve been fired.”
“Seems like,” Pierce said, then did a double-take as he saw Ed attempting to climb onto Heinkel’s back. “Wait, no, the piggy-back thing is adorable, but he’s gonna pass out and then we’re all gonna regret it. Just, uh….do you guys call it princess carry?”
“Not…a princess,” Ed protested.
“Yeah, but we need to be able to keep an eye on whether you start running a fever,” Pierce said. “Also, Heinkel is tall enough that if you fall off his back you’ll get a concussion, and that’s the last thing you need.”
“Not short,” Ed protested.
“Right, of course not,” Pierce groaned.
“So, uh, aren’t you gonna ask about the chimera thing?” Darius asked.
That rang a bell. “Oh, is that what you guys call being, like, part animal?” Pierce asked.
“That’s right,” Darius said. He still looked like he was waiting for Pierce to turn on him.
“I genuinely do not care if you turn out to be Douglas MacArthur’s long-lost twin brother, as long as you help me get Ed to someplace with medical supplies,” Pierce said.
“Are we supposed to know who that is?” Heinkel asked.
“My mistake, that guy’s famous back home,” Pierce said. “Point is, as long as you’re helping, I don’t care.”
Heinkel nodded and picked Ed up, as Darius carefully approached the doorway.
“Coast seems clear for now. Let’s go,” Darius said.
“What do you mean, ‘back home’?” Heinkel asked. “You Drachman?”
“Ehhhhhh, not exactly,” Pierce said, wiggling his fingers. “We’ve got a long walk ahead, so I guess I’ve got time to explain…”

Conspicuous, 1: standing out so as to be clearly visible. 2: attracting notice or attention.
1956
“SO, HEARD YOU’RE getting out today,” his cellmate, Vinny, piped from across their small shared cell. Ashton turned his attention away from the book he was reading, looking at the blonde man across from him.
“Seems that t’be that way,” he added quietly, not in the mood to have a conversation. Ashton Irwin was arrested for tagging and petty theft in 1953, leaving his entire life behind. He had everything he could’ve ever wanted, he was planning on finally giving the love of his life the promise ring his mother passed on to him, his family was finally opening their hearts to him, and he was surrounded with quite possibly the best people he could imagine.
He could still remember the day he was arrested; he could remember the look on his girl’s face as the cops busted into his small apartment and took him away from her, for three years.
“What are you gonna do once you’re a free man?” Vinny questioned, attempting to keep the conversation going.
“What kind of dumbass question is that, Vin?” Ashton grimaced, disgusted by such a question. He looked at Vin, who was holding a look of general wonder. He sighed, “if you must know, I’m going to get my girl. I know she’s been waiting for me all these years.”
“Irwin, she ain’t wait for you, bud.” Vinny wasn’t trying to sound like an asshole, but he felt that Ashton deserved the truth. “No girl ever waits for their fella in prison, no matter how much she loved you.”
Ashton turned his head back to the book, “she waited for me, Vin, I know she did.”
-------
“Irwin, up! You’re out,” the guard sounded as he pulled open the cell door. Ashton closed the book he was reading and stood up to finally get out and find his girl. As he was walking through the corridor, some of the inmates were cheering, the others jeering. All of the words of anything but affirmation rolled off his back, he was getting out and they weren’t. Nearing the front desk, Ashton could see his best friend, Calum, sitting in the waiting room. A smile painted across his face, happy that someone came to get him. Rounding the corner to the desk, Ashton was presented with papers that he had to sign stating that he understood his parole and he was passed a bag with his belongings.
“Hey, mate,” Calum’s thick, gruff Australian voice sounded through his ears. Calum stood up from where he was standing to envelop his best friend in a hug, which Ashton very happily returned. “I’ve missed you, man. Streets ain’t been the same without you,” Calum said. He wasn’t lying, their small group of four hadn’t been the same once their key member was jailed, considering Ashton was like their leader in a sense.
Ashton flashed a small smile, “let’s go, Hood, I got things to do.”
As they neared Calum’s car, Ashton smiled again. “Still got your old Hudson Hornet? Nice to know that things haven’t changed much,” Ashton mused. Calum cracked a smile as he unlocked the doors and the two men slid into the car.
“What’re you gonna do now that you’re out?” Calum sounded, starting the engine. Ashton was ripping open the plastic bag and grabbed out the only two things he had on his person at the time of his arrest: his leather jacket, and his wallet. After sliding on the black jacket, he opened his wallet and took out the small picture he had.
“I’m gonna go see Sweet Pea, she’s gonna be over the moon that I’m out,” Ashton said quietly. He could’ve sworn he heard Calum’s breath hitch at the mention of Sweet Pea. The smile Ashton had on his face faltered a bit, “Calum, what’s wrong?”
“Mate, no one’s heard from Sweet Pea since you got locked up. She stopped coming around,” Calum said quietly, scared that if he said it any louder that Ashton would blow up.
Ashton’s head snapped away from the picture and towards Calum. She what!? He really had no words. She always told him that they were together forever, that they would always wait for each other, no matter what. “That’s… impossible. Maybe she just didn’t wanna hang out with you three dodo birds without me, take me to her house.”
Driving down the street couldn’t have been more awkward for Calum. He’d only scraped the surface of everything that’s changed. He didn’t even tell him the worst part of Sweet Pea dropping him, and honestly, he didn’t want to.
As they pulled up to her folk’s house, Ashton swung the door open and almost flew up the stairs to the porch. Upon knocking, the sound of laughter could be heard from inside and Ashton’s heart skipped a beat, that was his girl’s laugh. Knocking on the door, his heart was pounding in his chest. The door swung open, revealing some schmuck who didn’t look like he belonged in the house. “And who are you?” this mystery guy questioned.
A grimace took over Ashton’s face, “none of your business, where’s Sweet Pea?” As soon as he said her name, she appeared from behind the man, a worried look on her face.
“It’s okay, Johnny, it’s just Ashton,” she said, grabbing onto Johnny’s bicep. “Go wait for me in the kitchen, love, I’ll only be a minute,” as soon as she muttered those words, Johnny pressed a light kiss to her lips, causing Ashton’s eyes to almost bug out of his eyes. What in the actual fuck? Why is he kissin’ my girl? My girl! “Ashton--”
“Sweet Pea? What’s goin’ on?” Ashton asked. He couldn’t believe what was going on. His girl, with another man, kissing him and calling him love. “I just got out, babe, I’m here to take you home,” Ashton said, stepping closer, attempting to pull her into him. Sweet Pea backed away from him, rejecting his gesture with a swat of her hand.
“No, Ashton.” She ran a hand through her hair, trying to formulate the words she needed to get her point across to him. “You weren’t there for me, what was I supposed to do? Johnny’s good to me, Ash. He loves me, takes care of me, and most of all, he doesn’t get into trouble,” she explained. She wanted to wait for Ashton, she really did, but she couldn’t take the pain of not knowing if he was okay or not, if he was staying alive in prison or getting killed in the courtyard.
“You don’t belong with him, darling, he’s a fuckin’ preppy. He can’t protect you like I can, you know that, Sweet Pea,” Ashton tried to reason, stepping closer to her once again. When he reached for her again, he was met with Johnny stepping in front of her.
“I can do her one better, Greaseball,” Johnny taunted. “I can provide a life for her. The only thing you can provide for her is pain and danger, whereas I can give her the life of luxury a beautiful woman like her deserves--”
“You know nothing of our fuckin’ relationship, so I’d back up if I were you, you trust fund baby,” Ashton interjected, about halfway to sending Johnny to the emergency room with a broken nose.
“I know plenty, asshole. Get back in your buddy’s little car and tag a wall or something, trash,” Johnny finished, holding his arm out so Ashton couldn’t shuffle any closer to her. “She doesn’t love you, man--”
“Johnny, plea--” Sweet Pea tried to silence them, knowing now that Johnny was trying to get a rise out of Ashton.
“Men are talking, Sweet Pea. Go to the kitchen and find your mother,” Johnny turned his head ever so slightly to give her a hardened look. “I think you should leave, Trailer Trash.”
As Ashton was starting to step down the stairs, he turned around to glance at Sweet Pea once more, a look of sadness washing over his face. “You always said you’d wait, Sweet Pea, no matter what. You lied to me,” Ashton whispered the last part, scared that if he said it any louder, he would cry, which he did not want to do. Sliding back into Calum’s car, he let out an exasperated sigh and ran his fingers through his hair.
“For what it’s worth, mate, you still have us,” Calum said, trying to lighten up the mood.
Ashton whipped his head to Calum, “shut the fuck up and drive, Hood.”
-------
“So he just showed up three years later—fresh out of jail—to… what? Try to get you back?” Rosie asked. Rosie was Sweet Pea’s long term best friend who knew every nook and cranny of Sweet Pea’s history with Ashton. It wasn’t hard to see the confusion in her eyes, this wasn’t a normal situation.
Sweet Pea swirled the tea around in her mug as they sat in the small diner on the Northside of town. Ever since Ashton was jailed, Sweet Pea steered clear of the Southside, scared that she might run into Ashton’s gang. “Yes! Then Johnny tried to pick a fight with him, calling him Trailer Trash and Greaseball, it just- it wasn’t good, Rose.”
“I can’t fucking stand Johnny.”
“Rose!”
“Well, it’s true. He needs to get off his high horse. You’ve been with him for, what, 11 months? You were with Ashton for 4 and a half years! Johnny doesn’t have shit on him,” Rosie expressed. Truth be told, Sweet Pea did feel something when she saw Ashton for the first time in three years. He was the first man she ever loved; he taught her how to be daring, showed her what true passion was. She could never forget that, no matter how much she wanted to.
She was angry at Ashton for getting himself locked up, yes, but he didn’t deserve to be dragged the way Johnny did. “I-I have to go, Rose. There’s something I need to take care of,” Sweet Pea blurted as she abruptly stood up from the booth and placed a few dollars on the table for her tea. She needed to talk to Ashton, to hear him out, without Johnny around. She didn’t know how she was going to do it, but dammit, it needed to happen soon.
-------
“I’m sorry about that, man,” said Calum to his best friend, “what happened at Sweet Pea’s house this morning was uncalled for, you didn’t deserve that.” Calum was right. What happened at Sweet Pea’s house was uncalled for, but there was nothing he could do about it. Ashton appreciated having a friend like Calum though, he was always there and although sometimes he’s a little moody, he always made sure his friends and family were taken care of.
“It’s okay, Cal,” Ashton reassured. He sighed, he didn’t know what he could do to get her back, not when she’s with that fuckboy preppy. “I just-- I need to take my mind off of her. Would you mind taking me to my parents house? I need to apologize for not talking to them for three years.”
“Ashton--”
“I don’t have time to argue about this. Just take me, please, Calum,” Ashton pleaded. Calum obliged, as the two men walked out of Calum’s small apartment.
Pulling up to Ashton’s family home, he felt the same excitement and worry he felt as when they pulled up to Sweet Pea’s house earlier that day. Ashton didn’t keep in contact with his family while he was in jail, too afraid of the disappointment and the stress he’d be putting his mother and siblings through. As Calum’s car sat on the curb, Ashton stayed staring at the house. There was a different car in the driveway, which Ashton just waved off as the possibility of his mother purchasing a new car. But then he saw it. The curtains were drawn back and he had the perfect view of the inside of the house, where he saw a little old man cross into the living room and sit in a big arm chair that he also did not recognize. Ashton was… confused, to say the least. “What in the,” he whispered to himself as he unbuckled his seat belt.
“What are you doing, Ash?” Calum questioned, ready to stop his friend from going and scaring this poor old man.
Ashton looked at Calum for a split second before directing his stare back at the house. “I need to see who that is and why the fuck he’s in my mother’s house.” As Ashton was getting ready to open the car door, Calum placed a hand on his shoulder to stop him.
“Listen, man, this is going to be hard to hear,” said Calum, “your family moved out of town about a year and a half ago, nobody knows why or where they moved to.” At this, shock took over Ashton’s body. He slowly pulled the car door closed and sat there, shell shocked. His family left him.
“Th-They left me?” Ashton said in the smallest voice. Ashton wasn’t one to cry but dammit, this was the straw that broke the camel's back.
“Ash—“
“No, Calum, they fuckin’ left me! First, the love of my life decides to replace me with some preppy asshole and now my family up and left me! I have no one, man, no one!” Wiping a few stray tears off his cheeks, Ashton sniffled and the look on his face hardened.
“Ashton, you’re not alone, mate. You have me, you know my apartment is open to you,” Calum said quietly, “why don’t we get drinks tonight, huh? Might do ya some good.”
The ride to the bar was filled with silence, neither of them knowing the correct words to say. Ashton was a little more on edge, with good reason. The ride seemed to be going on a little longer than Ashton had remembered, noticing that they entered the part of town where Luke and Michael lived. Luke and Michael lived more on the Eastside of town, whereas Calum—and now Ashton—lived on the Southside of Grand Haven. “What are we doing, man?” Ashton asked, “I thought we were going to the bar.”
“We are, Ash, we’re just doing something first,” Calum assured him.
At this point, Ashton could add skeptical to the list of emotions he was currently feeling. “I can see that, but my question was what are we doing?” Ashton emphasized the question, hoping that Calum would catch onto the hint of annoyance in his voice. Calum did not.
“Just-- you’ll see, mate,” Calum said to his best friend, “you’ll see.”
Ashton sighed. “I fucking hate surprises, Hood.”
It turns out that exactly what Ashton thought was happening, was happening. They had picked up Michael and Luke to join them at the bar for the night. He wasn’t explicitly angry, he loved Michael and Luke to pieces, he just hadn’t told them that he was released from prison, much less anything else that was currently going on.
The rest of the car ride was awkward, to say the least. It was filled with small talk, mostly from Calum and the other two, with occasional head nods from Ashton to show he was still down on Earth with them. Every once and awhile, one of the boys would attempt to converse with Ashton about how he was doing, with no prevail.
About three hours later, Ashton was feeling light on his feet. He typically wasn’t one to get drunk quickly but not having a single drink for three years really changes a person's tolerance. Although he was feeling better, his thoughts were still consumed by Sweet Pea. He wasn’t sure what possessed him to get up begin walking towards the exit of the bar, leather jacket in hand, but that’s exactly what he was doing. He didn’t get far, as one of the boys tried to grab his bicep to stop him. “Whoa, whoa, whoa where are you going, mate?” Michael asked, trying to pull his friend back to where everyone else was.
“I’m goin-- I just need a breath of fresh air, mate,” Ashton said, “I’ll be back.” Knowing that he couldn’t keep him from going outside, Michael let him. As Ashton was standing outside, it seemed as if his brain and his feet were moving on autopilot. He wasn’t sure if what he was doing was the right thing, but the alcohol in his system was telling him otherwise. The bar they were currently at was located in the central part of Grand Haven, towards the back, but Ashton has made this walk many a time. The February air was quite chilly tonight, but his leather jacket kept him warm enough, as well as the alcohol in him. Walking down the street, Ashton was all in his head. He wasn’t quite sure of what he was going to say yet, he just knew he had to go to her.
About halfway to the Northside of town, the once busy streets of Grand Haven began to quiet down, as everyone was off of work and inside their homes. It was beginning to get colder as well, as it was nearing the later part of night. The walk from the bar to Sweet Pea’s house wasn’t very far, it was just taking Ashton longer since he was intoxicated and worrying about how he was walking so he wouldn’t trip and fall. He was so caught up in his own mind, he almost didn’t register the hand slamming on his shoulder. “Cal, mate--”
“Did you not hear me, Greaseball?” Ashton turned around to be face to face with some random townie. “Go back to your dumpster.”
Ashton blinked, suddenly it seemed as if the alcohol in his veins was leaving his body. “Excuse me?” He was confused for two reasons: why this person decided to bother him, and why in the hell did this townie think it was fine putting his hands on him?
“You don’t belong here,” the townie once again repeated. Ashton felt his face heat up, who was this person to say whether or not he belonged somewhere? Why does it matter? What was Ashton doing that bothered this person so much?
“Sorry you feel that way, mate,” Ashton said, “bye.” The townie obviously wasn’t pleased with Ashton’s tone of voice, seeing as he once again grabbed his shoulder and shoved him. If Ashton wasn’t already fuming, he sure in hell was now. As he turned around, he scowled at the person behind him. “What the fu--”
Ashton’s words were met with a fist straight to his mouth. Is this piece of shit townie really trying to pick a fight? It didn’t take long for him to react, swinging at the townie himself. Ashton let the anger that had been boiling in his body all day take over, swinging relentlessly at the guy, receiving a few punches to the gut and cheek himself. Ashton wasn’t going to stop until the man was on the floor and would leave him alone. With a few more swings to the stomach and chin, the townie was sent to the ground groaning. “Fucking hell,” Ashton muttered as he turned around to leave the man on the ground.
“You’re on the wrong side of town,” the townie groaned as he stood to his feet. Shouldn’t I be saying that? Ashton thought in his head as he turned around to once again come face to face with the townie. How in the fuck did he get up? The townie snickered, “you’re gonna regret coming back.” He reached into the pocket of his blue jeans and pulled out a switchblade, smirking at Ashton.
“What the fuck?” Ashton said, stepping back. The townie stepped forwards once again, swinging the switchblade, slashing him on his stomach. Ashton doubled over in pain, hand gripping his stomach. The townie swung again, this time slitting Ashton’s cheek. Shit, if Ashton thought he was in pain now, this was excruciating.
The townie crouched down to Ashton’s level, smirking, “you’re trash,” he spat, “go back to prison where you belong.”
-------
The sound of the doorbell startled Sweet Pea from the half sleep state she was in. She glanced at the clock on the wall above the television set, 2:54 AM. She blinked a couple times, wondering who was at the door at such a late hour into the night. She flicked on the porch light, looking through the peephole. Ashton. It’s Ashton.
Sweet Pea quickly unlocked the front door and swung it open, to reveal a hurt Ashton. He half smiled upon seeing her, as that was all he could do without doubling over in pain. “Ashton,” she began, pulling her robe tighter around her as the chilly February breeze hit her unexpectedly, “are you okay? Let me take a look at you.”
Listening to her, Ashton sauntered over to Sweet Pea. She lifted her hands, running her fingers along his cheek, where the new slash made home. As her finger ran across it, Ashton hissed “Gentle, love,” he whispered, afraid that if he spoke too loud he’d scare the small, doe-eyed woman in front of him.
“Come on, let's get you cleaned up, okay?” She asked, carefully gripping his bicep so she could pull him inside her house. Sweet Pea lead him into the small kitchen and had him sit the table so she could get the first aid kit to tend to his wounds. Walking over to him ripping open an alcohol pad with his teeth, she looked into Ashton’s eyes for the first time that night. There was something in them she couldn’t exactly pinpoint; she didn’t know what she was doing. Here she was in her kitchen, cleaning up her ex-boyfriend-slash-ex-con after what seemed to be a bad fight at nearly 3 AM. “This is going to sting a little,” she warned him before bringing the alcohol wipe to his split lip to clean off the dried blood. Once again Ashton hissed, pleading Sweet Pea to be gentle, to which she replied with a small smile.
“I’m sorry,” Ashton started, “I shouldn’t have come to bother you, love.”
Sweet Pea sighed, “what happened to you?”
“I was at the bar with Calum and the boys and I needed to come see yo--”
“No, Ashton,” she said to him with her eyes shut as if she was trying to figure out what the right words were to say, “I’m not talking about tonight. I’m talking about in general. What happened to the man I once knew? My Ashton would not have gotten himself locked up.”
“Sweet Pea, please,” Ashton said. He’d been waiting to tell her why he got put into prison in the first place for the longest time, he just… he didn’t know how. How was he supposed to tell the love of his life that he was caught shoplifting when he already had a warrant on a tagging charge? “This is gonna be really hard for me to say, doll,” Ashton told the woman in front of him, looking at him with a sense of worry that Ashton could detect a mile away, “I was arrested on a petty theft charge when I already had a warrant out for tagging.”
“You… what? You had a warrant out for your arrest?” Sweet Pea was in shock, to say the least. She hung her head, pinching the bridge of her nose. Ashton had never felt more guilt for anything in his entire life and seeing Sweet Pea this incredibly disappointed in him made everything worse. “What’d you try n’ steal, Ash?”
“What?” Ashton asked, taken aback by her words.
“You heard me,” she said, “what did you try to steal?”
Ashton took a deep breath, “medication for Harry.” Little Harry Dawkins was Ashton’s youngest sibling, only twelve at the time of Ashton’s arrest. “He was-he was sick. Mum couldn’t afford the medication for him, I couldn’t afford the medication for him. I wasn’t going to let my little brother be in pain, doll, you know how much my siblings mean to me,” Ashton said quietly, lowering his head in shame. He looked at the floor and then slowly raised his head to make eye contact with Sweet Pea. “I’m angry at myself for getting arrested and leaving my family and leaving you for three years, but I’d do it again. If it meant Harry or Lauren or you were getting what you needed, then fuck, I’d steal anything.”
Sweet Pea felt her stomach tie itself into knots at his words. Ashton always has been a family man. “I understand,” she told him, “you shouldn’t have stolen, though. You could have come to me, love, my parents would’ve been more than happy to get Harry the medication, they have the money for it.”
“I was supposed to provide for you, Sweet Pea, not the other way around,” Ashton said, head hanging low once again.
As much as she would like to suppress it, Sweet Pea couldn’t ignore the feelings she still felt for Ashton in her heart. This was the man she was with for almost five years, how could she not still feel something for him? Sure, he was in jail for three years and she’s with Johnny now but she couldn’t help but think of that would happen if she gave Johnny, and possibly her family up, all for Ashton.
By that morning, Ashton was long gone. Sweet Pea offered for him to sleep on the couch, seeing as he was in no shape to be on his own, which he was thankful for, he just didn’t want her family to find him in the morning. After she cleaned him up, they spent hours catching up and laughing about old stories from when they were still together. Although he wasn’t afraid to admit it, he was scared of his feelings for Sweet Pea. He knew he still loved her, of course he did, but she was with someone new and he had to respect that. As much as he wanted to swoop her into his arms and kiss both of their pain away, he knew that’d only cause more tension.
-------
Ashton walked into the small diner that morning, he quickly caught sight of his three friends sitting in a booth towards the back. As he was walking to them, Luke looked up and smiled when he saw his friend. “Hey, fellas,” Ashton said as he slid into the booth next to Luke. Looking at the boys, Ashton could tell that Michael was nursing a hangover, as well as Luke.
“What happened to you last night?” Calum asked Ashton, “you can’t just disappear like that, man.You look horrible.” Ashton let out a huff. He knew that Calum was just looking out for his best interest, but holy shit, Ashton was a grown man who could take care of himself. Worry about yourself, Calum.
“I went to see Sweet Pea,” Ashton started. Upon hearing that, all of the boys suddenly perked up. “On my way there, some random townie stopped me, talking about how I was in the ‘wrong part of town’ and then pulled a fucking blade on me.” As soon as he said the word blade, Michael’s eyes went wide.
“Dude, are you okay?” Michael asked.
Ashton laughed, “I’m fine, mate,” he said to Michael, “Sweet Pea cleaned my wounds for me.”
“Sweet Pea? She took care of you?” Calum asked, almost as if he didn’t believe what Ashton was saying. What’s that supposed to mean? Ashton tried to hide his annoyance, but he wasn’t always the best at hiding his facial expressions.
“Yes, Calum, she took care of me. After that we talked for hours. I explained what happened to her and then we spent some time catching up,” Ashton said, “it was really nice.”
“You sound like a lovesick puppy,” Luke chuckled.
“So what if I’m in love? It’s not like my feelings for her have faded away at all,” Ashton raised his voice. Who were they to criticize him spending time with Sweet Pea? Why did it matter if he was still in love with Sweet Pea or not?
“Mate, we’re not trying to piss you off or anything,” Luke started, “but you need to take a look at the situation. She’s in a relationship with someone else, who she probably loves. I know this is hard to hear, but you need to accept the fact that maybe she’s moved on from you.”
-------
“Mom, I need your advice,” said Sweet Pea, walking into the living room where her mother was sat in her chair with a cup of tea.
“Of course,” her mother said, setting down the romance novel she’d been reading. Sweet Pea’s mother was always the one person she knew she could always count on. Her mother gave the best advice which always had her best interest in mind.
“Don’t get mad at me, mom,” Sweet Pea said to her mother who now had furrowed eyebrows, “Ashton was over last night,” As soon as she mentioned Ashton, her mother's face went to normal, her lips forming into a small smile.
“I know that, honey,” her mother said, “I could hear your guy’s quiet laughter.”
“Mom!” Sweet Pea yelled, covering her face with her hands. “I need to ask you a question.”
“Shoot,” her mother already could guess what Sweet Pea was going to ask, but didn’t want to prod at her daughter, she wanted Sweet Pea to come to those revelations herself.
“When Ashton and I were talking, I-I felt something. Something that I haven’t ever felt being with Johnny,” Sweet Pea started. She wasn’t sure how exactly how to word her feelings to her mother, or even to herself. “I think-I think--”
“You’re still in love with Ashton,” Sweet Pea’s mother finished for her. As soon as the words escaped her mom’s mouth, her eyes went wide. “Don’t worry, sweetie, I already knew. How could you not still be in love with him? You were with him for almost five years, you wanted to plan a future with the man,” her mother said, and she was right. Before Ashton was jailed, Sweet Pea had sat down with both of her parents, explaining that she was in love with the ill-tempered Greaser who she saw a complete future with.
“I don’t know what to do, Mom,” Sweet Pea whispered, hanging her head down in frustration.
“You tell him, dear,” her mother said, “love is too beautiful of a thing to let go like that. If you don’t tell Ashton how you feel and you stay with Johnny, you’re going to regret that for the rest of your life.”
Sweet Pea took a deep breath, her mother was right. I need to tell Ashton, I need to tell Ashton, I need to tell Ashton. The sentence kept repeating itself in her head over and over again until they didn’t sound like words anymore. But what about Johnny? “Mom,” Sweet Pea said, “what about Johnny? Isn’t it not fair to him for me to leave him for someone he considers ‘trailer trash’?”
“It’s more fair for you to leave the relationship now then it’d be if you stayed with him while in love with another man,” her mother said. Sweet Pea always knew her mother had great advice, but it only seems that she is purely talking from the heart right now.
“Mom, you are really passionate about this,” she laughed at her mother. Her mother smiled fondly, looking over to photo of her and her husband.
“Honey, I was in another relationship when I realized I was in love with your father. If I wouldn’t have left that other man, I wouldn’t have your father and more importantly, I wouldn’t have you,” her mother explained. Sweet Pea wasn’t in shock, as opposed to just in awe of her mother. “You need to fight for love, Sweet Pea. And let me tell you, Ashton Irwin is worth fighting for.”
-------
A little over a week later, Johnny was sat at the dinner table with Sweet Pea and her parents. She’d been acting a little out of character tonight, with good reason. She had given a lot of thought to what her mother said and yes, she was going to end things with Johnny and confess her feelings to Ashton. How could she not? It wasn’t that Johnny wasn’t good to her, she just didn’t share the same chemistry with him that she has with Ashton.
The family ate in silence, the awkward tension rising in the room. Johnny very awkwardly cleared his throat and looked at Sweet Pea’s parents. “If I could have everyone’s attention, please,” he asked as he stood up from his seat, directing his attention to a very awkward looking Sweet Pea. “Sweet Pea, I love you. I know we haven’t been together very long, but I know we’re here to stay,” Johnny began, causing Sweet Pea and her mother’s eyes to almost bulge out of their heads. This cannot be happening. Sweet Pea whipped her head over to her mother, who was staring down at her plate, pushing the pot roast around. Helpful.
“Johnny, what are you doing?” She asked him. She had a feeling of what he was going to do, but she didn’t want to believe that’s what actually was happening.
Johnny sighed. “Let me finish, Sweet Pea,” he demanded. For someone who’s confessing their love, he’s awfully rude. “As I was saying, I wanna spend the rest of my life with you,” he said, moving from his seat the kneel in front of her. Sweet Pea couldn’t contain the gasp escaping from her mouth, as well as her mother. This was not happening right now. “Please, please, please marry me, Sweet Pea.”
She looked into his eyes for the first time that evening. This wasn’t the future she saw for herself. She didn’t see her elf as being a little housewife for a man who didn’t even appreciate her; she saw herself with someone who wants better for her and someone who was okay with the fact that Sweet Pea didn’t want the stereotypical family. Sweet Pea saw herself with someone much like Ashton. “I-I… Johnny, I need to talk to you,” she looked over at her parents, “alone.”
Sweet Pea’s parents excused themselves to the backyard, while Sweet Pea stayed seated in her chair. Johnny stood up and began pacing, which made Sweet Pea even more nervous. “What are we talking about?” Johnny asked, stopping so he was standing in front of her once again.
“Johnny,” Sweet Pea started nervously, “I don’t know how to tell you this.”
Johnny furrowed his eyebrows together, “tell me what?” His tone sounded a little harsher than Sweet Pea would like, not that she was surprised.
Sweet Pea closed her eyes, taking in a deep breath. It’s now or never. Opening her eyes, she muttered, “I can’t marry you, Johnny.” As soon as the words fell past her lips, Johnny’s eyes went wide and his once blank stare was hardened.
“Oh yeah?” Johnny started, venom lacing his words. “And why is that?”
“I don’t- I don’t love you…” Sweet Pea whispered.
At that sentence, Johnny scoffed. “You don’t love me?” he shouted. “Who do you love? Hmm? I wanna know the truth.”
“Johnny, I-I--”
“No I know who, you love that fuckin’ Greaseball, don’t you?” he sneered. “That piece of shit can’t provide for you. I don’t know why you think that being with him is going to be easy, Sweet Pea,” Johnny laughed, “if you’d marry me, you wouldn’t have to work a day in your life. That Greaser can’t offer you that. You’ll be working more than he does.”
Sweet Pea stood up from her seat, blood boiling that he could ever talk about someone so amazing in such a demeaning tone. “You know what, Johnny? Yeah, I do love that ‘fuckin’ Greaseball’, who’s name is Ashton, by the way. That man has shown me more love in the four and a half years I was with them than an entire lifetime with you,” she spat. Johnny looked a little taken aback at the newfound attitude Sweet Pea has acquired. “Before you judge someone, why don’t you actually get to know them? Ashton has more kindness in his pinkie than you have in your entire body, his smile can light up a room, and fuck, you can lose yourself in that man’s eyes for hours.” She didn’t know why she was telling Johnny all of this, perhaps she was more so talking to herself at this point than to him. “I love that ill-tempered man with the sweetest heart,” she ended, looking back at Johnny’s hardened face, feeling absolutely disgusted with herself for putting up with him for as long as she did. Shaking her head, she began to walk down the hallway where her bedroom door was. Looking back one last time, she smirked, “you can leave now, Johnny.” And like that, she single handedly realized two things: Johnny was a piece of shit and that she was sure that Ashton Irwin was the love of her life.
-------
“You sure you don’t wanna go out with us, mate?” Calum asked Ashton. The boys had all been trying to convince Ashton to go to the bar with them again, but Ashton couldn’t bring himself to go.
Ashton flashed a small smile at his friends, “why don’t you guys just go? I’ll be fine here.” Not wanting to waste any more time, Calum just nodded and bid his best friend goodbye. Ashton sighed to himself, happy that he was finally alone.
Ever since the night that Sweet Pea took care of him, he couldn’t get her out of his mind. She was already always consuming his thoughts, now it was taken to the next level. He found that night at Sweet Pea’s house to be very therapeutic, knowing that it was probably time for her to know the truth.
For the next hour and a half or so, Ashton stared at the small black and white television set Calum had set up in the living room. The movie Casablanca was playing and Ashton couldn’t help but feel a sense of sadness. Sweet Pea absolutely loves this movie with her entire being, always watching it when it came on the television and of course forcing Ashton to watch it with her. Towards the end of the movie, there was a knock on the door, startling Ashton out of the relaxation he was previously feeling.
Standing up from the couch, Ashton went to the door and looked out the peephole. It can’t be. As if acting on autopilot, he swung the door open to reveal Sweet Pea. He looked her up and down, taking note of the upset look on her face. “Sweet Pea, love, why are you here?” Ashton asked her.
She looked up into his hazel eyes, and knew that it was time. “I need to talk to you, Ash,” she said to him, “it’s important.”
Upon hearing those words, Ashton’s heart rate picked up and he stood to the side, ushering Sweet Pea into Calum’s apartment. She looked around for a second, her eyes landing on the television set. “You’re watching Casablanca,” she smiled softly.
“Your favorite movie,” Ashton said to her. Sweet Pea turned her head away from the television and to Ashton once again in complete awe. He remembered.
As Ashton took a seat on the couch, Sweet Pea went over and sat down next to him. She didn’t exactly know how to tell him, but it shouldn’t be that hard, right? She had gotten over the obstacle of telling Johnny, but now she was faced with her biggest obstacle of all: telling Ashton her feelings. “So,” she awkwardly began, “Johnny proposed to me.”
Ashton’s eyes widened for a moment. She was goin’ to marry that piece of shit? “Oh-oh yeah? How’d that g--”
“I told him no, Ashton,” she interrupted him. Just then, she felt her breathing go slow. Ashton, on the other hand, swallowed one of the many lumps in his throat. “I told him no,” she repeated again, softer this time.
“You did?” Ashton asked. “Why?”
“Because he’s not the one I love,” she said, looking down at her lap. Sweet Pea looked up, looking gazes with Ashton, the confused expression very clearly painted on his face.
“He’s not the one you love…” Ashton pondered out loud, more to himself than to her.
Without thinking, Sweet Pea whispered, “I love you.” Had it not incredibly quiet in the apartment, the only noise coming from the television that was basically muted, Ashton could’ve missed the three words he’s been waiting to hear for the past three years. “You-you what? Really?” he asked.
Sweet Pea smiled, finally happy that she got what’s been eating her alive for the past week out into the open. “Of course I do, Ash,” she said, reaching her hand out to grasp his, “it’s you. It’s always been you.”
Ashton looked at her in complete and utter shock. He couldn’t believe that she actually said it to him. Sure, he knew she probably still had a little bit of love for her, but she was really good at hiding it. He closed his eyes, basking in the moment for a second. It was what Sweet Pea said next that made everything feel real.
“Ashton,” she said, catching him out of his own thoughts. “Kiss me. Kiss me as if it were the last time.” She was quoting the movie, and the line couldn’t be more fitting for the moment.
Ashton collided his lips with Sweet Pea’s in what seemed like the most desperate, romantic, lustful, and overdue kiss either one of them had ever experienced. It was rushed, but slow. Sloppy, yet beautiful. Neither of them had even realized that in all this time, this was what they needed.
They kissed each other as if their lives depended on it, and before too long, they were shedding one another of their clothing. Ashton’s head was spinning, as this was the happiest he’s felt in the last three years. Heaven. This must be what Heaven feels like.
When Sweet Pea rid herself of her top, Ashton’s pink lips attached to her chest, sucking and marking her as his, leaving a fiery trail in his wake. Sweet Pea let a moan escape her lips, which was music to Ashton’s ears. He could feel himself getting more and more excited as the minutes were passing by, the excitement building in his stomach.
When Ashton flipped the two of them, so she was now beneath him, he finally pulled down both his trousers and his boxers in one swift movement. Ashton sighed at the simple relief he found from just freeing himself from the confines of his pants. He then pulled Sweet Pea’s pants and underwear down and sat up, smiling at her. “You’re so fuckin’ beautiful,” he said to her, making the heat rise to her cheeks as she pulled Ashton by his face down to hers to catch him in a messy kiss. As their lips moved in sync, Ashton trailed his hand down her body, stopping at her heat. When he slipped his fingers through her folds, Sweet Pea let out a squeaky moan, fueling Ashton to go further. “You’re so wet for me, doll,” he rasped lowly, “just for me.”
“Just for you,” she quietly moaned. Her moans grew louder and louder and Ashton began to pump his finger in and out of her, preparing her enough to handle his length. When Ashton decided to finally stop building the anticipation, he reached over to the coffee table and pulled the condom from his wallet. Sweet Pea chuckled, “I hope that condom isn’t three years old.” Ashton chuckled back at her awkward comment, sliding the condom on and lining himself up at her entrance.
He looked down at Sweet Pea, clutching her hips and finally pushing himself into her, earning a loud moan from her, to which Ashton replied with a low growl. As Ashton began to thrust, he felt all of his problems fade away. Here he was, with the woman he loves, who loves him back, sharing one of their most romantic moments. He wouldn’t have it any other way.
They were a mess of tongue, sweat, and the sound of skin slapping skin mixed with her soft moans became the soundtrack to the moment. Sweet Pea was nearing her orgasm, Ashton chasing his own, with his thrusts becoming less rhythmic and sloppier.
As Sweet Pea reached her high, squealing a moan, Ashton wasn’t far behind her. Letting a few curse words fall past his lips, he reached his own high with a sigh of relief. When he pulled out of her, Sweet Pea let out a quiet gasp from the sudden empty feeling. Ashton pulled off his condom, throwing it into the trash bin across the living room, taking time to pull on his boxers. He once again took his place on the couch and handed Sweet Pea her panties and his t-shirt, in case the boys came back earlier than he hoped.
And as Ashton and Sweet Pea were laying on the couch, post-sex, neither one of them had ever been more in love than in this moment. He placed a sweet kiss to her forehead, which was lightly covered in sweat, to which Sweet Pea cuddled deeper into his side. “I love you,” he whispered to her, “so fuckin’ much.”
Sweet Pea smiled up at him, “I love you more.”

Summary: Eraserhead is an underground hero who is constantly busy and doesn’t have time to be dealing with new villains - even if they aren’t all that villainous and make the night interesting.
Present Mic is the latest up-and-coming villain in the world and he has a point to prove to everyone out there - as long as he doesn’t keep getting distracted by Eraserhead.
Aizawa Shota is someone who soon learns that there is more to someone than the mask they show to the world - especially when it comes to playing heroes and villains.
Yamada Hizashi learns that there is more to heroics and villainy than he could have ever thought - especially in a world where some heroes still care about those lost in the shadows.

Chapter Twenty (End)
“How is it fair that I now get my ass kicked by both of you in training? It’s not fair that Mic still trains with us, too, now. Like, okay, maybe at first that was fine because of the whole quirk thing, but isn’t he already licensed? This is bullshit and you know it, Sensei! Training is supposed to be easier the stronger I get, isn’t it?”
“Hey, hey, language,” Hizashi chided, kneeling over Hitoshi and inspecting the teen to make sure he was actually alright and not too badly hurt. It would be just like him to claim he was fine even with a broken bone. Hizashi knew that much and he had only been training with Shouta and Hitoshi for a couple of months.
Shouta, instead of being worried and fretting, only yawned and looked bored. Honestly, Eraserhead may have been an amazing hero, but Shouta was so lazy, mumbling a bored, “If you have enough breath to complain, then you have enough left to go another round.”
Hitoshi groaned the exact same way Shouta did when he didn’t want to leave the bed in the morning, and it took a moment for Hizashi to stop himself from letting out a laugh. Instead he focused on pulling Hitoshi up to at least be sitting, the teen giving him a quick, tired smile before pulling himself up the rest of the way.
“Do we really have to go another round?” Hitoshi whined, tired and bored and entire body tensed and ready to move at the slightest threat. Hizashi was more proud than he could say, so instead he settled for stepping back and watching the gleam of pride in Shouta’s eyes as he charged and Hitoshi neatly dodged to the side. “Aw, come on, it’s rude not to answer a question, Sensei.”
“You used to be a lot more respectful, you know,” Shouta shot back along with a nasty kick, Hitoshi blocking it with crossed arms before the two were going all out. Honestly, neither of them knew what it meant to take it easy.
Leaning against the wall of the empty gym on U.A. grounds, Hizashi sat down on the ground and watched the two spar as he let his thoughts drift once again to all that had happened since he had walked into U.A. four months ago without a voice and with little to no hope. It had certainly been a busy few months, Hizashi would say that.
Not only had he taken all his exams and been approved for a hero license, a teaching license, and a license to build support gear, but he had also regained the use of his quirk; even if it was weaker than it used to be. That part hadn’t been easy, but it had been easier with Shouta staying by his side throughout every moment of the frustrating process.
Shouta… He had stayed with Hizashi even when it looked like Hizashi might not regain the use of his quirk or all of his words. He had stayed and he had essentially kidnapped Hizashi and dragged him and Snowball to his much nicer apartment, and then Hitoshi had squirmed his way into his heart and honestly it was just…
Hizashi couldn’t believe this was his life. He was a hero. He was a pro hero and he had his own radio show, even, and he was a teacher and he had this amazing man who loved him, this great kid who was a delightful little shit, and these students who all seemed to care about him so much and it was just overwhelming.
“Hey.” Jumping at the sudden voice, Hizashi blinked to see Shouta was kneeling in front of him and holding out a half-empty bottle of water, expression edging towards concern. “You alright?”
“Oh- Yeah! Of course! Just lost in my thoughts.” Hizashi took the water with a kiss to Shouta’s cheek, grinning as the pink flush from his sparring match grew just a touch darker. “You two finally done beating the crap out of each other?”
“He was taking it easy on me,” Hitoshi complained loudly, Hizashi hiding behind the water bottle as he watched Shouta roll his eyes and stand back up.
“That’s because last week you had a fever and the last thing I need is another problem child who doesn’t understand how to take care of himself.”
Shaking his head as the two argued, Hizashi stood up and breathed out a soft sigh as he let his thoughts settle. His new life was overwhelming, sure, but he knew he wouldn’t change it for anything in the world.
“Alright, alright, stop arguing, you two. We have dinner reservations to get to, after all!” Hizashi clapped his hands together, pausing when he saw Hitoshi’s confused expression. “Shouta, you told him, didn’t you?”
“Of course,” Shouta nodded, looking to Hitoshi. “Hey, kid, we’re all having dinner together, tonight.” Hitoshi, at least, found it funny. “Don’t worry. It’s at the cat cafe.” And Hizashi found it funny how crazy these two were about cats. “At least, it will be if you can promise that there won’t be any more incidents.”
“That guy deserved it for kicking Mocha and you know it,” Hitoshi argued back at once, Hizashi shaking his head as he gathered their bags and made sure they had everything together. “Besides, it was just some water.”
Yes, ‘just some water.’ Hitoshi seemed to forget the part where he had brainwashed that nasty man into dumping the pitcher of water on his own head, though. Then again, Hizashi wasn’t much better. He had been contemplating blowing out the man’s eardrums.
“You have to admit it was pretty funny,” Hizashi added on, watching Hitoshi perk up at having someone on his side. Shouta’s expression, though, made it clear what he thought of their humor. “It was!”
“I can and will punish both of you,” Shouta glowered, Hitoshi halfway through laughing before Shouta’s gaze was on him. “If you use your quirk like that in public again, I will use our training sessions for the next month to focus solely on meditation and study time.” Ah. Hitoshi wasn’t laughing anymore. “As for you.”
“First of all, I wasn’t the cause of that incident! I only encouraged him after it happened,” Hizashi pointed out quickly, handing Hitoshi his bag and then ruffling his hair. “Second of all, what would you even make my punishment?” Because Shouta was so soft and Hizashi honestly couldn’t see Shouta following through on any sort of real punishment.
Shouta paused before a slow smirk grew on his face, Hizashi feeling a shiver crawl up his spine at the quiet words of, “Do you want one that badly?”
“Right, that’s my cue to get out of here, then,” Hitoshi spoke up loudly, Hizashi almost jumping as the teen shook his head and headed for the door. “I’ll meet you two by the gates.”
“Don’t get distracted by idiots this time,” Shouta called after him, Hizashi smothering a laugh as he saw Hitoshi’s ears turn red before the teen was quickening his pace and leaving the gym as fast as possible.
“There’s no need to be so mean to him, Shou-chan,” Hizashi chided, wrapping his arms around Shouta’s shoulders as soon as the man was close and drawing him into a soft, now familiar kiss. Hizashi was never sure if he enjoyed the closeness of their kisses the most or the fact that Shouta always, always pulled him closer.
Hizashi was thoroughly distracted by the time Shouta pulled back to kiss at his cheek, lips quirked up into a smile against his skin, “Maybe not, but it is fun. Are you really okay?” Hizashi wasn’t sure why he wouldn’t be okay until he realized Shouta was probably referring to when he had gotten lost in his thoughts.
“I’m okay, Shouta,” Hizashi whispered quietly, the words for Shouta and Shouta alone as he hugged the man close, burying a smile against him as he felt the hug returned just as tightly. “Thanks to you.”
Over the last four months when everything was happening all at once, Hizashi had often found himself thinking on what might have happened if it hadn’t been Eraserhead to find him on the night of his villainous debut.
“You know what I think, Shouta?” Hizashi asked quietly, feeling more than hearing Shouta’s soft hum against him. “I think we always would have wound up like this. One way or another, I think it all would have led here.”
Maybe there was a world out there where Shouta had been the villain and Hizashi had been the hero to get him to see that the world wasn’t so bad.
Or perhaps the both of them met as villains and had decided that something needed to change and slowly, so slowly, but so surely, saw that they could bring that change together.
It was possible there was even a world where they were both heroes and they had been friends from the start and had grown to be so much closer.
No matter what, though, Hizashi knew that it all led back to this. No matter the universe, he had a feeling that it always led back to Yamada Hizashi and Aizawa Shouta.
“Yeah… I think you’re right.” Shouta, as always, knew exactly what Hizashi was thinking. When he pulled back, he had on one of his small, genuine smiles, pressing another kiss to Hizashi’s cheek. “And what’s that smile about?”
“Mm, nothing.” It was all so busy and overwhelming and hectic, but Hizashi couldn’t help but to laugh as he hung onto Shouta tightly. “I just have a good feeling about the future, is all.”
Shouta laughed, low and rough and sweet, and pulled back to drag Hizashi along with a soft, “Come on, hero.”
Hero… It had a nice ring to it.

Appreciated - Erick Brian Colon
Soo.. I got inspired by @your-gall-bladder-is-hot-af and his post about Erick being under appreciated and I figured why not write something? It’s also almost Erick’s birthday over here sooo yeah.
Also I haven’t written something in a little while so bear with me haha. Enough talking let’s get to the story shall we?
The days leading up to Erick’s birthday were for some reason very stressful. Maybe organising that surprise party for him was taking it’s toll on you. You wanted Erick to feel special on his birthday because you knew that lately he had been feeling a little neglected. Erick had a tendency to read comments and surf through the band’s tag on social media.
On the morning of his birthday Erick was nowhere to be found. You expected him to be all bouncy and bubbly today, because that’s how Erick was, full of energy and goofiness. However, when he didn’t answer your happy birthday text and call you grew a little concerned and decided to text the other guys. Christopher was the first to answer and he was surprised to. Erick was usually really excited around his birthday, asking about his presents and a party. When Joel, Richard and Zabdiel told you Erick didn’t know what was going on either you grew more concerned. You decided to call his mom and even she hadn’t seen him all morning.
You and the guys headed over to Erick’s family’s house anyway to prepare for the party and distract him. His mother opened the door and you greeted her before stepping inside. “Have you heard anything from Erick?” You asked her. “No, he’s still in his room, he hasn’t come out yet.” She said slightly shaking her head. “He’s been quiet for the past few days and he doesn’t want to talk to me about it.” She confessed. “Maybe I can go upstairs and see what’s going on?” Christopher offered. Everyone agreed. Erick saw Christopher as a big brother and maybe a little brotherly advice was exactly what he needed.
Christopher was back within minutes, he shook his head. “Nothing?” you asked. “Nothing.” He answered. “Have you guys noticed how Erick has been scrolling through his social media a lot lately?” Joel asked. “Yeah, but not nothing more than usual.” Richard added. “Well… I have noticed that his mood changes whenever he does that.” Zabdiel spoke calmly. You listened carefully to the four boys who were now having a discussion about social media. After a little while it clicked. Watching the four bandmembers you realised something. Erick doesn’t get as much attention and you honestly had no idea why. In your eyes Erick was the funniest, cutest, most talented guy out there. And that didn’t even come close to describing how incredible Erick really is. As Christopher, Richard, Zabdiel and Joel kept talking about what to do you decided to go onto different kinds of social media to check out the situation.
You were right, Erick was truly so under appreciated on every platform so you decided to give the fandom a little nudge and wrote multiple Erick appreciation posts to see how the fans would react. Not soon after little threads were forming about people who agreed and started making their own appreciation posts. You smiled at the sight but hid it from the guys for now. You wanted to show Erick first. While you were busy with social media Joel had gone up to Erick’s room and he had gotten back too. “He’s asking for you Y/n” Joel said with a small smile. “Me?” Joel nodded and you headed upstairs.
You knocked on the door and waited for Erick’s answer. You heard a soft “Y/n” coming from inside the room. “Yes, it’s me. Can I come in?” You asked and Erick quickly answered with “Sí.” Before you headed in. “Erick?” You asked as you looked around in the room. “Over here.” Erick said softly as his head popped up from under the covers. You looked at him, his eyes were red and puffy, he had been crying. “Scoot.” You said before you slid in under the covers to lie down next to him. “What’s going on?” you asked him as you cupped his face and wiped away a single tear from his left cheek with your thumb. “It’s so stupid and I feel so stupid for feeling like this..” Erick began. “Erick.. you can tell me, I won’t judge, you know I’ll never judge you.” You reassured him as you smiled softly. “It’s just.. I have noticed lately that you know, all the other guys get written stories about and they get a lot of people praising them for their looks and talent and I don’t know. Maybe it’s just me, but they’re not saying those things about me. It’s like I’m not even part of this band.” He whispered, opening up to you about something that had been bugging him for a little while now. You nodded as you listened to him. “Erick.. You are incredibly talented and CNCO is not the same without you. You are appreciated, you really are. There are so many people out there who realise how incredible you are. Trust me, you are loved and respected and appreciated.” You told him. You hated seeing him like this.
Erick looked up. “How do you know? Everyone is always talking about how good looking Christopher is, how incredible Zabdiel’s vocals are, how good Richard looks when he’s dancing on stage, how great Joel sounds even though he had a cold. There’s nothing out there about me.” He sniffed. You shook your head. “Hand me your phone.” You told him. He looked a little confused but handed his phone to you because he trusted you. You unlocked his phone because you were so close that he trusted you with his password and you went to twitter first, showing him all the appreciation tweets that had been created in the past few minutes. You went on to other social media, facebook, Instagram and eventually tumblr. Everywhere people were sharing their favourite Erick Brian Colon moments, photo’s, jokes, video’s, vocals. Suddenly there was so much love for Erick everywhere. It broke your heart a little to know that people needed a little nudge, but that bright smile on Erick’s face made everything okay. “Thank you!” Erick exclaimed as he hugged you to him. “You are so appreciated Erick not just by fans.. Come on down, we have a little surprise for you.”

his parents where visibly influential and his father was a rumored kingpin, but it went only as far as a rumor, there was no evidence that proved that the notorious businessman was involved in the underground world of south-korea. if he was or wasn’t, jinwoo did not know, you see, he was always the outsider in his family, but while other outsiders stood out and rebelled loudly against their family, jinwoo was almost unsettlingly obedient. there was a peculiar distance about him, he appeared to be uncaring, uninterested - quite a bit discontent, but it had all grown from traditions he was expected to follow, yet also was shut away from. his family wanted him to always do what was best for the family, but also isolated him from his legacy. he was never the heir to take over the family business. the only part he had was carrying through with the demand of being present during dinners out with business partners and acquaintances, during in which he appeared to be so impersonal yet still so alluring. family portraits spoke of the same manner - throughout his life he was so set apart that when others saw the family photographs in the news, they wondered who he was. but it was always the curious kind of wonderment.
it was his mother who loved him the most, while her older sons were the mirror image of their father, it was jinwoo who resembled her mellow soul and carried that endearing personality of every mama’s favorite boy. he never objected when his mother dressed him in cashmere and gentle silk, the expensive designer only to be ruined when he spilled red wine over his clothes after innocently getting drunk from a box of liquored chocolates - resulting for his nannies to be fired. he grew up immensely spoiled, but while his brothers were out wreaking havoc outside the horizon of the gated community he lived in, he spends his time with a cigarette between his cupid lips and a creative tool in his hand - whether it was the violin, a paintbrush, or he was sitting behind the piano where his father’s dirty money was hidden inside the instrument. he craved the distraction.
at twenty he found himself to be living in a cage and the only time he could find any sort of freedom was when he went behind the backs of everyone close to him. it’s the sneaking out at midnight and meeting in shady dark corners with shady companions that he knows to be associates of his family. shutting them up with a map of hickeys on their throat. drinks, sex, parties with a sense of anonymity. his family was too preoccupied and never suspected that anything was off, he was adaptable at hiding his rebellious side.
his family had no idea that their ways of shutting him out have led him to a path of danger. they thought they had done well and hidden him from the actual violence, but there are moments he remembers, distant memories vague enough to be dreams. he remembers peeking through the slightly ajar door of his father’s office. his father in a pristine suit and in front of him a man kneeling on the floor pleading, whimpering in pain until he goes quiet and so does his own heart at the sound of a deafening gunshot. its the night that jinwoo runs away for the first time. lost, panicked, and with everything falling apart, it was then he met ( to be plotted ) and later while he shared a cigarette with the stranger between the conversations and moonlight lighting up his pale complexion, he had asked “ do you think there would be sex at the end of the world? ” #iconic. in their love, where he followed them into the shady underground bars, where they made out under flickering neon-lit bathroom stalls the taste of whiskey on his lips ; the bustlings clubs where he partied with drugs, and gambled with his life. he felt found. around ( to be added ) he didn’t have to be an heir. and so he chose the stranger over his family and followed them to yongsa.
tldr; attention-loving boy finds out the rumors are true and his father is a kingpin and runs away from home with the first person he falls in love with
WANTED CONNECTIONS
x CLOSE FRIEND & CONFIDANT: their bond was instantly sibling-like and jinwoo considers ( MUSE A ) to be trustworthy and dependable. they see the terrified boy underneath the mask, knows why jinwoo acts out in the way he does ; the parties, the drugs, the easy sex, knows because jinwoo has always been able to share things with ( MUSE A ), and now in the latest fit of frustration of having enough, jinwoo has revealed his unstable dangerous family life and since then the two of them have only grown closer.
x FRIENDS ( with benefits ) & RECENT UNEXPECTED FRUSTRATION: despite initial reservations and the closed-off ness that jinwoo showed upon first meeting them, in a matter of time getting to know one another better they have developed a soft-version of a ride and die friendship. the pair of them know how to always have a good time, and it’s not unlikely to find jinwoo on the nights that he has no one to share the bed with crashing into ( MUSE B ) bed. which could have brought the recent shiftiness and tension in their friendship or there could be something more. whatever it is jinwoo has never been able to wholly identify it.
x EX-PARTY FRIEND & BAD INFLUENCE: at one point they had been friends of the worst kind, a friendship that started and blossomed after frequently running into each other at parties and ending up talking and hanging out the entire night. they partied together, they occasionally slept together, and often ( MUSE C ) was the wilder of the two, pushing jinwoo into hedonistic and reckless actions. however, after one specific night, their friendship was broken and now the pair can’t stand to be even in the same room together. something bad happened there and they are both holding onto a secret.
x CURIOSITY & MUSE: recently ( MUSE D ) has been showing up more and more at his performances and jinwoo has noticed them in the crowd. what he doesn’t know is that ( MUSE D ) recognizes him and has seen him with his family in the news. for jinwoo they have become a recent unexpected muse that he has been writing songs about and always the first person he looks for, wanting to make sure that ( MUSE D ) is at the bar on the night that he performs.
x * chemistry * ON & OFF & INFATUATION: based on the last part of his biography. ( MUSE E ) appeared in his life when it was falling apart, he ran away for them to yongsa. since then, ( MUSE E ) interest seems to be shifting with the wind. jinwoo craves their affection and lives for the nights when all their attention is on him, but when ( MUSE E ) doesn’t give it to him enough .. he will find minute lovers, distractions in someone else.

Disasterous Diet
Part two of the Cath fic for Zelthur weekend. Also dedicated to @thestarrynightgazer and @maybeishouldwait - thank you to Tyler the cat for inspiration for this instalment.
Part one can be found here.
***
“We can’t do this to him! Look at that face…”
Arthur felt the protest die on his lips as Gelda regarded him, her violet eyes hard and cold. “I have been saying ever since that cat came into this house that he has a problem with food. Well, now we know that he does.
“The vet was quite clear,” Gelda continued sternly as she poured a small quantity of biscuits into a cup marked with measurements along the sides. “He has to lose two kilos.” The biscuits clattered like falling hailstones into Cath’s food bowl, barely covering the bottom of the dish and Arthur smelled the unappealing odour of dry, dusty meat. “He is allowed this much, three times a day,” she added as she placed the bowl deliberately on the floor. “Do not give him any more.”
As if on cue, Cath toddled over to the dish, looking over his shoulder at Gelda with a mournful expression and Arthur could swear he saw the animal scrunch up his nose in disgust. Nonetheless, thirty seconds later all of the biscuits were gone, the cat mewling pitifully up at Arthur, his wails more than enough to tug on the heartstrings.
“But he’s hungry,” Arthur moaned as he crouched down to stroke Cath’s fur, the feline pressing his head sorrowfully into his hand. “That was barely anything! Surely we can give him a bit more than that…”
“No we can’t,” Gelda snapped as she started unpacking more bags of the offending diet biscuits, placing them neatly in one of the kitchen cabinets. “The vet was very specific. At present he is at significant risk of diabetes and liver disease. Do you want him to get sick?”
Arthur rested his hand on the cat’s soft fur, ruffling the patch behind his ears. “No, of course not,” he said quietly, “but I don’t want him to be miserable! This just seems like nowhere near enough food.”
“I asked the vet the same thing,” Gelda replied with a sigh. “But she promised it would be sufficient for his needs. And if we help him exercise he can come off the diet more quickly.” At this Gelda removed a plastic ball from the bag. “I bought him this,” she added, a hopeful edge to her tone as she held the object out for Arthur’s inspection.
Arthur examined the ball, trying to work out what it was for. Whatever it was, he sincerely doubted it would be enough to get Cath moving. In a fit of extravagance, Zeldris had bought their pet an enormous multi-tiered scratching post on Amazon, lovingly putting the complicated contraption together late one Tuesday evening after staggering in from work. Cath had taken one disdainful look at it, then sprung up onto the sofa, falling asleep on Arthur’s chest. The look Zeldris had given the animal was enough to freeze rivers, but the post had sat untouched ever since.
As if reading his mind, Gelda flashed him a mischievous smile, opening a hatch in the ball and placing a few diet biscuits inside. “This will get him moving,” she promised as she placed the ball on the floor. Cath stepped up to it cautiously, sniffing with some trepidation before pushing the ball all over the kitchen floor with something approaching enthusiasm. Arthur stared in surprise: it was the most he had seen the feline move since the day the cat had demolished his birthday cake.
“That should help,” Gelda said and Arthur was sure he could detect relief in her tone. “The vet was quite sharp with me,” she explained as he took a step towards her, pulling her into a close embrace. “I had to tell her we got him like that from the rescue centre to avoid the lecture.”
They stayed locked together for several minutes, Arthur feeling her breathing grow steady as he held her. “He’ll lose the weight, I promise,” he said with finality. “I won’t cheat. Next time he goes to the vet she’ll be really pleased.” Gelda flashed him a smile before finally pulling back, stowing the empty shopping bag in a drawer before checking her watch.
“I’ve got to go pack. Work want me to present at a conference in Dubai and I’ve got to leave soon,” Gelda said, unable to keep the hint of pride from her voice. “It’s only for a week,” she said bracingly as she caught Arthur’s slightly crestfallen expression.
“What’s this?” a voice called from the kitchen door and both the others looked round to see Zeldris, looking completely worn out. His hair and suit were as immaculate as usual, but the dark bags under his eyes betrayed his exhaustion. He always looked like this on Friday evenings. “You’re going away?”
“I found out this evening. Work just emailed the tickets to me,” Gelda explained. “Charles has a stomach bug and can’t go.”
“He’s always letting you down,” Zeldris said crossly as he folded his arms across his chest.
Gelda sighed, pressing a hand to her temple and Arthur was unsurprised to see Zeldris move towards her to rest a hand on her arm. “It’s not his fault,” Gelda murmured, “His kid has just started nursery and is bringing back every disease under the sun. And I’m happy to go. This will be good for my career.”
“When’s your flight?” Zeldris asked, and Arthur saw him stifle a yawn.
“I’m taking her, Zel. You get some sleep,” Arthur declared as he grabbed the car keys off the hook on the wall. “I’m not working til Sunday, okay?” he said, cutting off the other’s obvious protest. “Now go pack,” he added as he gave Gelda a kiss on the forehead. She looked at him gratefully before leaving the kitchen, the sound of her feet padding up the steps reaching them a few moments later.
Zeldris rubbed his eyes, his shoulders collapsing and Arthur stepped to the fridge, grabbing a Tupperware container and shoving the pasta he had cooked earlier into the microwave, the smell of tomato sauce percolating through the room. Zeldris looked at him gratefully before wolfing down the meal, barely pausing for breath as he ate.
“You didn’t get lunch again,” Arthur said reproachfully. “Honestly you have to start looking after yourself. It’s not like you’re on a diet.”
“What do you mean?” Zeldris asked, his voice muffled with food. Arthur looked around, noting with some misgiving that Cath had given up on his ball, which lay abandoned next to the skirting board, the cat himself now curled up fast asleep in his basket. Zeldris followed his gaze and gave a snort of derision.
“Gelda took him to the vet today,” Arthur explained as Zeldris chuckled. “Cath has to lose two kilos. I don’t know what to do, Zel. I mean… he can’t go thirty minutes without eating. What are we going to do.”
Zeldris stared up at him, a gleeful look in his eyes. “I’m sure we’ll manage,” he said with a smile.
***
His boyfriend was not so sanguine the following day. After they had been woken up at five in the morning, then interrupted twice by Cath’s incessant scratching on the door, Zeldris had lost it completely and banished the cat to the garden, securing the cat flap with an echoing bang. The words ‘I never want to see that thing again’ had been used several times and Arthur did not dare let Cath back into the house. The poor feline stared at him forlornly from his spot under a tree, looking every bit as miserable as Arthur felt.
“He’s just hungry,” Arthur pleaded. “It’s not his fault…”
“Then whose is it exactly?” Zeldris snapped back, his hands on his hips as he too glowered at the animal. “Ours for refusing to feed him, in direct contravention of medical advice? No, I thought not,” he huffed as Arthur stuttered incoherently. “If he’s so hungry he can damn well learn how to hunt.”
Before Arthur could respond, Zeldris strode from the room, no doubt intending to take out his anger on the dust that had settled on the bookcases and shelves. With some annoyance, Arthur looked out at the garden, deciding that he would let Cath back inside no matter the consequences. His hand was opening the French windows before it fully sunk in: Cath was nowhere to be seen.
In something of a panic, Arthur ran out of the house, feeling the rough stone tiles under his bare feet. “Cath? Cath! Where are you?” he called, his eyes darting frantically under bushes and shrubs for a telltale sign of ginger. “I’m sorry!” he added as he stepped onto the lawn. The cat couldn’t possibly have scaled the high fence, could he?
The tremendous and utterly unexpected noise bursting like a machine gun behind him made him jump out of his skin: a horrifying mixture of wailing and squealing and hissing that practically made his blood run cold. Heart beating uncomfortably fast in his chest Arthur turned round, his eyes squeezed shut, forcing himself to open them as he looked at the house.
He was just in time to see Cath practically flying through the open doors, something small and fast skittering in ahead of him. Arthur groaned, cold dread dropping to the pit of his stomach. Forcing his unresponsive legs to move, he made his way back into the kitchen, stealing himself for whatever might lie within.
As it turned out his preparations were nowhere near enough. In the few minutes that had passed between Cath returning to the house and his own entrance the kitchen had been transformed into absolute chaos. The expensive, glass fruit bowl that Gelda has brought back from Venice was lying in shining shards all over the floor along with a multitude of upturned apples and grapefruits. The utensils which were usually carefully placed on the countertop were all upended, covering the granite surface in a jumbled mess. Arthur took several deep breaths, trying to calm the hammering in his chest, an exercise which was ruined by the appearance of a vicious squirrel, hissing and squeaking from the top of a wall cabinet as Cath mewled at it angrily from below.
“What the hell!” Zeldris shouted as he ran into the kitchen, his face drained of blood as he regarded the room. “Arthur! If that cat has done this…”
Pointing towards the intruder, Arthur interjected, “I think Cath took your advice about hunting.” He was amused to see Zeldris splutter, his eyes growing wide as he looked at the squirrel in utter astonishment.
“Get that thing out of here!” he yelled as Arthur gave way to the chuckle bubbling up in his throat. “Just look at the state of this place! I can’t… I… what…”
Laughing to himself, Arthur lifted a chair and placed it directly below the furious squirrel. Then, donning oven gloves, he took his position, reaching up to grab the offending rodent. He was surprised to find his effort was successful, and that he was able to grab the grey furball without much difficulty.
“Aw, it’s only a baby,” he exclaimed as he climbed down from the chair, Zeldris visibly flinching as he walked towards him.
“Just… just get it out of here,” his boyfriend gasped as he shrank backwards towards the wall. Arthur guffawed as he let the squirrel go in the garden, the annoyed animal shooting off into the trees at the first opportunity. When Arthur returned, he found Zeldris muttering angrily to himself as he picked up the larger splinters of glass from the floor.
Arthur grinned as he made a start on the countertops, placing the utensils into the dishwasher and wiping down the surfaces. Having finished his task, Arthur moved to the floor, picking up the fruit as Zeldris hoovered. It was only when the they had finished clattering and bustling about that Arthur noticed the rustling sound coming from within one of the cupboards. Experimentally, he opened a few doors, his face breaking into a grin as he found the source of the noise.
Cath was face-first in a pile of biscuits; the container had obviously been upturned in the ruckus allowing the cat to eat his fill. The crunching sound, along with the appreciative miaows, suggested that Cath was thoroughly enjoying himself. A few moments later, Zeldris joined him and together they watched as Cath gorged on the food.
“Let’s… leave him like that. He can start his diet tomorrow,” Zeldris murmured quietly as he leant against Arthur, who wrapped an arm quickly round him in response.
“Okay. And after we finish up in here, let’s take a shower,” Arthur suggested, not needing to look into the other’s face to sense his agreement. “I don’t know about you, this work has made me break out in a sweat…”
A pause, followed by a hand moving around his waist. “Ten minutes,” came the reply and Arthur smiled.

Find yourself and grow - bnha
this has nothing to do with the prompt but it inspired this s oooooooooo yup
Kirishima stared at the ceiling. An uncertain sort of energy thrummed through him, his eyes exhausted and bones like jelly but unable to close his eyes, his mind active but muted like a frizzled television.
He didn’t have the energy to get up but he didn’t have the ability to sleep, so Kirishima leaned over and grabbed his phone. Turning it on started a small headache right behind his eyes but Kirishima didn’t know what else to do, so he scrolled through a few social media sites, staring but not seeing.
A snapchat notification appeared at the top of his screen. [BROCCOLI BOI is typing…]
Kirishima narrowed his eyes and waited for the consecutive “BROCCOLI BOI has sent you a snap!”, but it never came.
He went to snapchat anyway, hovering over Izuku’s name for only a second before clicking.
[you] hey i saw u typing u up
Kirishima waited, hoping that Izuku was actually up and that snapchat didn’t glitch on him. Izuku’s profile bubbled, indicating that he was typing, and Kirishima let out a breath of relief.

“Oh my god,” Kirishima said aloud, running a hand down his face. “Oh man.”
Not a minute later he heard knocking before his door swung open, Midoriya genuinely standing in his threshold with All Might pajama pants and a plain red t-shirt.
Kirishima started sitting up, the fatigue receding for a moment as he laughed in shock. “I can’t believe you’re here, Midori– ah!” Kirishima yelped in surprise as Midoriya strode forwards and leaned down, placing his arms under Kirishima’s knees and behind his shoulders, picking him up effortlessly.
“Midoriya!” Kirishima threw his arms around Midoriya’s shoulders in shock, his body tensing instinctively.
A dusting of pink was brushed on Midoriya’s cheeks, but he said, “You aren’t that heavy, you know.”
Kirishima stared at him.
Midoriya shifted, then, looking more and more awkward. “I’m… I’m sorry? Uh. I didn’t mean to make you uncomfortable. Uh.”
“This is the most incredible thing that has ever happened to me,” Kirishima said, in awe. And wow, this was not great for his mini crush, honestly.
Mini. Yeah, okay.
Midoriya’s flush grew deeper but he didn’t set Kirishima down, instead positioning him into a more comfortable hold and stepping away from the bed. “So, uh, to the commons?”
“Let’s go to the rec room,” Kirishima said. The commons was always colder than the rec room, being so close to the entrance.
“The rec room…?” Midoriya said slowly. “There’s…?”
“Holy– okay, Midoriya, prepare to have your mind blown,” Kirishima said, gesturing with one hand for emphasis. “It’s like the commons but with like, way more pillows, and a way better TV, it’s hidden though, and there’s a code, you gotta follow it, okay?”
“Alright,” Midoriya said, laughter in his voice. “Lead the way, then?”
Kirishima flushed and wrapped his arms around Midoriya’s shoulders and neck again. He could probably walk, especially after Midoriya hyping him up about the rec room, but who was he to turn down such a rare experience?
Kirishima led him through the hallways, Midoriya giving him strange looks when he told him to go through the boiler room to get there. They eventually reached a door with a wooden sign. Which, in reality, was more of a wooden slab pinned to the door. Burnt into the wood said “enter if you dare”.
Kirishima exuberantly gestured to the door. “Here it is! All your hopes and dreams behind these hallowed doors!”
Midoriya glanced at him, then turned his gaze pointedly at the wood, a blush creeping up his neck as he muttered, “doubt it.”
“Hey dude, okay, I gotta–” Kirishima struggled out of Midoriya’s arms, now wide-awake and excited. “Initiation. So. You are about to enter the former abode of the hero squad known as Burnout.”
Midoriya hide his smile at Kirishima’s grave expression and jazz hands.
“Burnout found this abandoned room years ago and renovated it. They’re inspirations, really, and there’s rules pinned around the room that we have to follow or the room will reject us,” Kirishima said, nodding seriously. “A main one: no telling teachers. Legend says a member attempted to inform a teacher and they were never seen again…” Kirishima said lowly, then added, “just kidding! They were unable to use their quirk for a few hours. And they lost the trust of everyone else, obviously.”
“That sounds easy enough,” Midoriya said, mind already running through the possible quirks with such a power. It would have to encompass the room, but also be able to effect any who knew about it – including technically him as well, unless the rules weren’t enacted until he entered the room itself. Then the quirk had to be able to cause losing another quirk for a select amount of time by spoken word, maybe? These rules sounded awfully hard to enforce, and –
“’Doriya, my dude,” Kirishima punched him lightly in the shoulder. “Stay with me my man, that was only one.”
“Ah, sorry!” Midoriya blushed and rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.
“Rule number two,” Kirishima said, holding up two fingers. “No fighting. Real fighting, since it can tell the difference, somehow. Quirk usage is okay, but once it gets too… real, you gotta take it outside. That one makes you really tired, I know from experience.”
“…okay,” Midoriya said, deciding life would be easier the less questions he asked. Less time spent talking, the sooner they’d actually go in.
“Those are the most important ones I guess,” Kirishima mused, shrugging. “Alright, Midoriya, initiation over!”
Kirishima pushed the door open and beckoned Midoriya in, letting the door fall shut after Midoriya had entered.
“Welcome to the rec room!” Kirishima said proudly, like he was presenting a personal accomplishment.
The room could hold a decent amount of people while retaining that cozy size, with two couches, two recliners, and an uncountable amount of varying sizes and kinds of beanbags thrown about. Just as Kirishima promised, a large flat-screen sat on one wall, but a minifridge ran softly in the back of the room with a shaded window nearby.
“Wow,” Midoriya breathed. The walls were covered in old boards, giving the room a rustic feel.
Kirishima breezed by him and plopped onto one of the couches, sighing deeply. “Ah, it’s been too long.”
“When were you here last?” Midoriya asked.
“Two days ago,” Kirishima said. “Kaminari found it first, of course, so he told me and Sero, then Ashido because she beat him at arm wrestling, and Bakugou – I think Bakugou found it before all of us, honestly. Todoroki has totally been here before, too, the ice box in the mini fridge is always stocked – and maybe like, Tokoyami? Because that dude knows like, everything.”
Kirishima seemed to melt into the couch as he spoke, movements becoming more and more sluggish until he yawned. Midoriya took a step, hesitation pouring through his veins, because he didn’t want to intrude on Kirishima’s… on Kirishima.
Kirishima looked soft and pliable in a way Midoriya had never seen before, and the normally loud and expressive teen was… quiet, and tired, and yawning.
“Hey dude, wanna play like… video games or something?” Kirishima said.
“Maybe a movie,” Midoriya suggested, eyeing Kirishima’s drooping eyes as he finally made it to the couch and sat down gingerly.
“Dude let’s watch Pacific Rim,” Kirishima said. “You haven’t seen it, right?”
“I haven’t,” Midoriya said.
“Awesome.” Summoning energy from some deep energy source within him, Kirishima lurched from the couch and picked through a stack of movies next to the TV. While Kirishima was getting the movie ready, Midoriya glanced around the room.
Small post-its nailed – yes, nailed – to the wall littered the wood in pale yellow, pink, green, and the occasional green or orange pieces of paper. He read the nearest one to him: “Rule 31: if one of you little shits sticks ONE more piece of bubblegum to the ceiling you’re evicted”.
“Oh, yeah,” Kirishima said, noticing Midoriya’s gaze. “They added rules as time went on.”
Midoriya glanced at another one – a dark purple one with silver sharpie writing, sharp and jagged, with the words “Rule 12: NO SEX IN THIS ROOM YA NASTIES -from your neighborhood ace”.
Midoriya blinked, in surprise, shock, or embarrassment, or possibly a mixture of all three.
“I think the original three uh,” Kirishima cleared his throat. “Made a later member mad.”
“Oh my god,” Midoriya breathed, soft laughter falling from his lips.
Kirishima gazed at him for another second or two before flopping back onto the couch, pressing play. He was notably closer to Midoriya than when Midoriya had initially sat down, their arms almost (almost) brushing.
A few minutes in, Kirishima’s head dropped onto Midoriya’s shoulder.
By the fifteen minute mark, Kirishima was asleep.
Midoriya wasn’t sure how Kirishima managed to sleep through one of the most action-packed movies he’d ever seen, counting the All Might saga, without stirring once.
By the time the movie ended, Midoriya’s shoulder was asleep, but he didn’t dare move Kirishima – he looked softer, relaxed, while he slept, and Midoriya didn’t want to disrupt that.
However, after sitting in complete silence for a few minutes, TV black, Midoriya realized he’d have to move.
“Okay, Kiri,” Midoriya murmured mostly to himself, since Kirishima was sleeping. “Let’s get you back to your room.”
He propped Kirishima against the back of the couch and stood, cracking his back and rotating his shoulders, then leaned down and picked Kirishima up, throwing him over his shoulder. While the princess-hold had been great for dramatic effect and great because Midoriya got to see Kirishima’s expression, he wanted to have an open hand.
The halls were eerily quiet, as it was around three or four in the morning, but Midoriya’s stride was confident. He’d walked these halls at early times before.
Entering Kirishima’s room, Midoriya gently lay the teen on his obnoxiously colored sheets, pulling the comforter over his body and, unable to resist the temptation, gave him a soft kiss on the cheek.
He was almost out the door when a quiet, “Midoriya?” sounded from the bed.
He paused, door in hand, and tilted his head. “Yeah?”
“I really…” a yawn, then, “I really like you.”
Midoriya’s cheeks inflamed and he tensed, throat suddenly dry. He turned around completely, to craft a probably embarrassing babble of a response, but Kirishima was already sleeping again.
Midoriya shut the door as silently as he could, then sped-walked back to his room, having a mini-crisis.
He definitely wasn’t getting any more sleep tonight.

The One With The Prom Video
⇻ For twenty years, you had always viewed Jung Hoseok as your best friend’s cousin, who you could also probably call a close friend considering all he had done for you. It takes you one night and a home video to realize just how much he has done, and just how much you truly feel for each other.
Pairing: Hoseok x reader Genre: Fluff, mild angst (if you squint really hard?) Words: 5k Inspired by: Friends Season 2 episode 14, “The One With The Prom Video” Warnings: Mild language, mentioning of alcohol, mentioning of drugs
You were ten years old when you first met Jung Hoseok.
You don’t remember anything special about the details of the day. What you were wearing, what he was wearing, what you said to each other. You assumed you were wearing something along the lines of Bermuda shorts with a camisole over t-shirt combo from the department store you always shopped in with some obnoxious neon jewelry that you seemed to always wear in the fourth grade. He was probably in something like basketball shorts and a t-shirt, like most other boys his age wore. None of it really seemed to be that important at the time.
Jung Hoseok was always just your best friend, Hana’s, older cousin. He was constantly hanging around at her house since the two of them were stuck together more than glue itself. His family lived right next door so it was uncommon to find the two of them separate. This, unsurprisingly, meant that you saw quite a bit of him as well.
You never attended school with him. Aside from him being two years older than you and Hana, you also both attended an all-girls private school until high school, while he attended a co-ed public one. Once you hit high school, you both finally convinced your parents to let you attend a co-ed private school instead.
In your elementary and even middle school years, you loved being able to have Hana all to yourself at school, since you knew once she went home, she would practically be at Hoseok’s beck and call.
Even though Hana and Hoseok were close, when they were younger it was less of a friendship/close family relationship. More like Hana following Hoseok around trying to do everything he did, since he was older and in association, cooler. It took until she finally hit her moody teenage years to grow a backbone and stop doing everything Hoseok asked her to.
For a while, you didn’t see much of Hoseok. He was around age sixteen, and you and Hana were fourteen. Hana had said that his parents had shipped him away to some dance camp for the summer. It was in hopes that his semi-“rebellious” phase – that honestly was the worst way to define Hoseok getting detention twice for being late to school – would dwindle down.
When he had returned at the beginning of the school year and you saw him again, he had changed. He was a lot friendlier towards both you and Hana, and had grown about three inches. His jawline had slimmed down and he looked a lot older than he had in June when you last saw him. Even though he looked different and was a bit kinder, he was still the same Hoseok you knew before the summer had started. This was proven when you went to pour sugar in your cereal one morning after sleeping over and the top fell off, making all of the sugar in the container dump into your Rice Krispies.
Yep, the same, annoying Hoseok.
To be fair though, you had changed as well. You turned fifteen over the summer and one of your birthday presents from Mother Nature was boobs! Yep, that’s right. Boobs. You had gone up two whole cup sizes and had grown an inch as well. You and Hana had also spent the summer learning how to properly do makeup – no more of that too dark foundation and blue eye shadow from the local drug store. You spent almost all of your birthday money at Sephora and stayed up all night watching tutorials on YouTube in preparation for the start of high school in September.
Looking back on that summer now, fifteen years later, you find yourself laughing. You cared so much about how others would perceive you as you entered what you thought would be the most important years of your life. It’s comical now, at age thirty, that you really thought high school would be the prime of your life.
Now, at age thirty, you had already been engaged once. That lasted for a hot second before you realized you had more attraction to a closet door than you did to the guy and broke it off after a month. You had also gone to college and gotten your degree in secondary mathematics education and had a full-time, paying job as a geometry teacher at the local high school. You were still wallowing in student loans, especially since a teacher’s pay is pretty much shit. The kids could be assholes sometimes too, but when you’ve had a rough day, you still had Hoseok and Hana to cheer you up after all these years. Except now the cheering up included a bottle or two of wine.
That’s how you ended up here, sitting on the couch in Hana’s living room on a Friday night. Your group had expanded over the years, now including a girl named Yeona that Hana met in her first college class, and two boys named Namjoon and Jimin. Hoseok and Namjoon were roommates all throughout college and stayed in touch even when Namjoon moved in with Jimin, who had posted an ad online about needing a roommate. The six of you had been there for each other throughout the good, the bad, and the ugly over the course of the past decade.
It was finally time for Hana to join the club: the “I’m in my 30’s and still don’t know what the fuck I’m doing” club. Her birthday was on Sunday and in preparation for the huge party you would all have to tolerate tomorrow, you decided to pre-game with some alcohol and old home videos from the comfort of Hana’s living room. She had found a huge box of unlabeled DVDs at her parents house the previous week and decided that in celebration of her thirtieth time around the sun, she wanted to spend her Friday night watching the lot of them. The sixth movie of the night was playing on her flat screen, where a video of Hoseok and Hana playing his dad’s drum set at ages three and five could be seen by the six pairs of eyes glued to it.
“Hoseok, why the hell are you holding the sticks like that?” Yeona choked out through her laughs.
“I could barely hold a pencil at age five, how the hell was I supposed to know how to properly hold drum sticks back then?” he retorted back, taking a swig of his IPA.
“I bet you still wouldn’t be able to hold them correctly now,” you giggle in response from your seat on the floor.
“Hey! I’m very musically inclined!”
“With your voice and your dance steps you might have called yourself as J-Hope, but when it comes to instruments you’re J-Hopeless,” Hana retorts.
“Wow, very original, never heard that one before,” Hoseok mutters, lips touching the beer bottle but not taking another sip. “I thought we agreed to not bring up that nickname ever again?”
“Oh come on Hoseok, this is a night of reminiscing. I for one, would love to reminisce on how you insisted we call you J-Hope the first summer after you went to dance camp because you thought you were some hot shot with every ounce of swag you could have,” you say, trying desperately to hold back a string of laughs.
The rest of the group let out laughs of disbelief at the mention of Hoseok’s short-lived teenage nickname.
“Okay that’s enough, onto the next one,” Hoseok announced, trying to ignore the comments Hana was making about no doubt more embarrassing things from his adolescence. He stood up from his spot on the armchair and placed his beer on the side table before walking over to the DVD player. He ejected the disc and without looking placed another one in the slot and pressed play.
The laughter had finally died down by the time Hoseok had sat back down on the blue armchair placed next to the couch.
Everyone focused on the TV, waiting to see what memories would appear next.
When the screen finally loaded, you were met with the image of your parents standing with Hana’s mom in her kitchen. Hana’s dad’s voice could be heard from behind the video camera. Your dad had a regular camera in his hands, and they all seemed to be excited about something.
“Are they coming downstairs soon?” your mom asked Hana’s, looking excited.
“Yes, mom, we are,” you heard your own voice from behind the camera. It panned around and you’re all met with the image of you and Hana, dressed in gowns with hair and makeup done, ready for your senior prom.
You smile faintly, remembering how much effort you had put into looking nice that night.
You shopped for months for the perfect dress before deciding on a champagne colored mermaid dress with beading up the bodice. Hana had done your hair in a half-up, half-down look and you had done a dramatic smokey eye to compliment your bronzed skin. You remember tanning outside with Hana for two weeks straight trying to get enough color to look good in the dress.
Hana had spent just as much time on her appearance, wearing a silver dress that was also beaded from head to toe. Her hair was completely up with loose curls framing her face and even though she had done formal makeup, it looked minimal on her but it worked. She never needed to wear much anyways.
You heard saw Hoseok shuffling in his chair from the corner of your eye. Turning to look at him, he stutters out, “Oh, we don’t have to watch this.”
Complaints came from the others, insisting that they all wanted to continue watching. Hoseok continued to shift uncomfortably in his seat as his attention shifted across numerous objects in the room. You stared at him confused, but returned your attention to the screen again.
“Oh you look so great! So beautiful!” you hear from your parents behind the camera.
“Dad! Turn the camera off!” Hana whines, attempting to push the camera away from her face.
“This is a momentous occasion sweetheart! You only go to senior prom once!” he chuckles.
“Unless you’re Hoseok, then you don’t go at all,” she snickers.
“Oh you hush,” Hana’s mom scolds.
“Damn, you guys got THAT dressed up for prom? I went in a dress I found at JCPenney for $50, straightened my hair and called it a day,” Yeona states, shoveling a handful of popcorn in her mouth.
“I didn’t even go to my prom. My friends and I skipped and went to the beach that weekend instead. Smoked a fuck ton of weed,” Namjoon laughed.
“It was important to us!” you exclaim. “We happened to have been asked by some of the cutest guys in our school!”
“Guys from a private school? I don’t trust it, those guys are always dickbags,” Jimin replies.
“Shush, you’ll see! When we were eighteen they were peak cute.”
“How about now? Still peaking?” Jimin chuckles.
“Shut up, Jimin.”
Chuckles emit from the group as you all turn back to the TV.
“Now that you mention him, where is Hoseok?” you hear Hana’s dad ask, turning the camera around to inspect the room. Hoseok is now visible, leaning against the kitchen counter, staring at the two girls as they walk towards him.
“Oh, there you are,” he says, moving the camera to be more in Hoseok’s face.
“Seriously Uncle Jihun?” Hoseok mutters before pushing the camera out of his face.
“Alright, alright, I’ll turn it off.”
The screen turns black for a few seconds before transitioning into the next clip. The screen is mostly black, like the clip was filmed secretly. The top halves of both Hoseok and you are visible to the screen. You’re pulling up the top of your dress.
“You uh, look really pretty tonight,” Hoseok murmurs, his arms crossed over his chest as he looks at the ground.
“Oh, thanks,” you reply back, awkwardly playing with your earring. “So, any plans this summer?”
“Not really, probably just going to the studio with Jungkook to create choreography for next year’s fall showcase. Kid practically idolizes me,” he shrugged.
You, Hana and Namjoon all laugh at that.
During his sophomore year of college Hoseok met this kid named Jungkook after he joined the same dance troop as Hoseok. Hoseok treated Jungkook like a little brother and mentored him, always allowing him to stay with him later to practice the choreography for their showcases. He would find out the next year that Jungkook had a crush on him and that was why he followed him around all the time. Hoseok was shocked to say the least and had a hard time believing that 1: Jungkook was gay and 2: that Jungkook had a crush on him. He had to let him down as easy as he could and Jungkook was so embarrassed that he stopped talking to Hoseok for a few months. They finally reconciled after Jungkook met a boy named Taehyung, who became his boyfriend and later fiancé.
“Was this pre or post confession, Hobi?” Yeona chuckled.
Hoseok shrunk even further into the chair.
“Oh, that’s cool,” you reply back, still awkwardly lifting up the top of your dress. “Hey, is this thing hooked all the way? It keeps falling down.”
You turned around to have Hoseok take a look and attempt to aid you if necessary. What the camera captures that you didn’t see is Hoseok looking startled as your back practically meets his front. He stutters out a “let me check” before his fingers stumble over the clasp on the back of your dress.
“L-looks good to me, you look go-“ The doorbell interrupts him.
“Oh my God, they’re here!” you squeal in excitement with Hana, running away from Hoseok before he can finish his sentence. His hands fall to his sides and his gaze continues to follow yours as you run out of the camera’s range.
The next clip cuts to you standing in the hallway while Hana’s date, a boy with dyed blonde hair named Min Yoongi, gets his red rose boutonniere pinned to his tuxedo lapel. Flashes from your dad’s camera are seen against the two of them.
You lean over from your spot hidden from the camera’s flashes to ask him, “Where’s Seokjin? I thought you guys were coming together?”
“He’s on his way, relax,” Yoongi smoothly replies. “Had to pick up the bouquet or something, I don’t remember what exactly.”
You sigh, starting to wring your hands together in anxiety. Yoongi had arrived nearly ten minutes ago and your date, Kim Seokjin, still had yet to show.
“Damn, did you get stood up to your own prom?” Jimin asks from behind you on the couch.
“Just keep watching,” you murmur, eyes focused on the TV.
The next clip cuts to about thirty minutes later, when Seokjin still had yet to arrive to Hana’s house. You are starting to panic.
“I texted him but he hasn’t replied. He can’t be standing me up,” you say, looking at Hana sadly. “I can’t go without a date to prom, I can’t, its too embarrassing.”
Hana grabs a tissue from the box behind you on the countertop and dabs it under your eyes. “Don’t cry, your makeup will run. And hey, if you don’t go, I won’t go either.”
Yoongi walks closer to the two of you, seething out, “I’ll kick his ass, I swear,” before walking away.
The group chuckles at that, seeing how heated Yoongi had gotten over the possibility of not being able to attend prom too.
The camera had followed Yoongi down the hall to the staircase, where Hoseok was apparently in a conversation with Hana’s mom.
“Hobi, I have a great idea. Why don’t you take Y/N to the prom?” she asks in a hushed tone as Hoseok is looking at his phone.
He chuckles before sarcastically replying, “Yeah, okay Aunt Jisoo. Like that’ll happen.”
From behind the camera, you can hear Jihun chime in.
“Your Aunt is right, Hoseok. You should take her. You can wear my tux, we’re practically the same size.”
“She wouldn’t want to go with me anyways, even if I did offer to take her,” Hoseok retorts dejectedly.
“Oh come on Hoseok, you’re a college man! Who gives a shit about some high school guy; you’re the real deal! Even if you weren’t in college, she would still be lucky to go with you,” you hear Jisun argue.
Your eyes are practically glued to the screen at this point. You had no idea that this conversation ever happened. Apparently, Hana is the same way as she can’t seem to look away either.
Hoseok locks his phone before shoving it in his pocket and meeting Jihun’s eyes. “I don’t know, she just sees me as Hana’s cousin that’s a pain in her ass all the time.”
“Oh come on, Hobi, look at her. She’s devastated,” he says, turning the camera back towards you and Hana standing by the counter.
You’re trying so hard to hold back your tears, as you whimper, “I can’t believe I’m not going to get to go to my own prom. I’ve literally dreamed of this since I was thirteen, Hana. We’ve dreamed of this since we were thirteen. Why is the universe playing this cruel joke on me?”
Hana continues to comfort you as the camera pans back to Hoseok talking with his aunt and uncle.
“…Okay,” he finally agrees. “Show me where the tux is.”
“Guys, I think we’ve seen enough,” Hoseok’s voice chimes in from your side. “Let’s change it to something else now.”
A chorus of denials comes from the group behind you, but you’re still in shock, eyes never once leaving the TV.
“Fine, but I’m not going to watch anymore,” Hoseok states, standing up from his chair and walking behind the group into the kitchen.
“Alright Hoseok, let’s see!” Aunt Jisoo says, now the one behind the camera. Uncle Jihun walks out of their bedroom first, followed by Hoseok. He is clad in a classic black tuxedo with a white shirt and a black tie. His hair has some product in it and is styled in a sexy kind of messy way, courtesy of Jihun.
“Oh, don’t you look handsome!” she exclaims. “Let’s go show the girls!”
Aunt Jisoo begins to walk backwards down the stairs, camera still on Hoseok as he closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, muttering to himself. What sounds like ‘be cool, it’ll all be fine,” appear to come from his mouth a few times before he reaches the top of the steps. He grabs some flowers from their vase in the hallway before beginning his descent down the steps.
“Y/N! Wait until you see who-“ you hear Jihun begin, before he stops himself at the bottom of the steps.
“Oh.”
“Look who finally showed up!” you exclaim excitedly, in the process of taking pictures in front of the fireplace with your date, Seokjin. Hana and Yoongi are standing on the other side of you, looking equally as happy with his arrival.
“Oh dear,” you hear Aunt Jisoo whisper from behind the camera. Hoseok had stopped at the top of the stairs at the sound of your voice, the words from your mouth halting him in his place before he could be visible to anyone else.
“Jihun, how do I turn this off?” you hear her ask. Hoseok’s face is still in the frame. You can see him visibly swallow before looking at the camera and turning around to walk back into the bedroom he just came from, slamming the door behind him.
The screen then cuts to black.
The tension in the room couldn’t even be cut with a sword if anyone tried.
So that’s where he had gone when he disappeared? You assumed he got bored of all of the prom stuff and dipped without saying goodbye in true Hoseok fashion. Never in your life would you have guessed he was getting ready to take you to prom since your date had assumingly stood you up.
Everyone turns to look behind the couches to the kitchen where Hoseok stood. His one hand is on the counter, the other fidgeting with the bottom of his old Supreme t-shirt.
“I can’t believe you did that,” Hana breathes out.
Hoseok remains silent for a few seconds before responding with, “Yeah.”
You can hardly manage to look at Hoseok, still overcome with so many thoughts and emotions.
Why on Earth would he do that for you? For years Hoseok had always just been your best friend’s annoying cousin that always made you feel like the odd guy out in their friendship. That only changed once you went to college and could finally be seen as a somewhat equal to him, you assumed.
“You’ve liked her for THAT long?” Hana asks. “I thought it was just a recent thing.”
That breaks you from your trance. “What are you talking about?”
“I’ve been noticing something was up with him recently, I figured maybe it was stress from work but I realized that he only acted that way whenever you were around or even just mentioned. I just assumed.”
“Oh no, it’s been going on way longer than you think,” Namjoon chimed in.
“I’ll fucking rip your hair out of your head if you say another word, Namjoon,” Hoseok threatens from the kitchen.
Namjoon ignores the blatant threat of violence to his scalp and continues. “Freshman year he wouldn’t shut up about how much he missed this girl from back home. Told us all about how she had one of the worst temperaments out of anyone he knew, but it was charming. After every vacation we would come back to school and he would say that she just keeps getting more beautiful every time he sees her. Super corny if you ask me, but the dude was clearly in love so hey, who was I to judge? Imagine my surprise now to find out that it was Y/N after all this time.”
Your eyes are glued to Hoseok and his eyes are glued to the floor. His knuckles are white from gripping the counter so hard.
You slowly stand up, before softly asking, “Hoseok, how long have you felt that way about me?”
His gaze doesn’t lift from the floor as he awkwardly chuckles. “Do you remember after your first day of high school, where you came home so excited because some guy asked you for your number?”
You stare at him in astonishment. “Hoseok, that was over fifteen years ago.”
He nods. “Embarrassing, right? To be in love with your cousin’s best friend for nearly two decades, with absolutely no expectation of reciprocation? Trust me, I tried to get over you. I dated other girls, I slept with other girls; you know that. At the end of the day though, I could be cuddling someone else and still be disappointed that it wasn’t you instead.”
His eyes lift from the floor to finally meet your wide ones. Your jaw drops a bit unexpectedly.
Of course you had always considered the fact that maybe one day you and Hoseok would end up together. It made sense, you had grown up together and he was that kind of friend where at 16 you make the agreement to marry each other if you aren’t already married by 30, but never actually take it seriously because you both know that it’ll never happen.
You had never suspected that he had felt this strongly about you for this long.
You rack your brain trying to think of any signs that you could have missed.
There was that one time when you were a junior in high school and you had just broken up with your first boyfriend after finding out that he had been texting other girls behind your back. Hoseok and Hana comforted you the whole day Saturday, watching reruns of That 70’s Show with you and stuffing your faces with cheesy breadsticks from the local pizza place. The following Monday at school, your ex-boyfriend showed up with a black eye. You were surprised but never questioned what had happened.
There was also the time when you were a senior in college doing your student teaching, and you were convinced that you had chosen the wrong major because the students you had to teach were so awful and rude to you. Hoseok had listened to you ramble on in tears about how you had screwed up your whole life and credit report for a profession that wasn’t right for you. He had calmed you down and talked some sense into you, and even helped you to develop a new lesson plan and teaching approach that might work better with the students, even though he knew close to nothing about math education or making lesson plans.
Then there was the time that you were all out at Yeona’s birthday dinner when you got the call from your mom that your grandfather had died. Hoseok was the one to drive you home and hold you all night as you sobbed over the loss of the man you had looked up to for so many years.
Then of course, the memory you didn’t even know was a memory until three minutes ago. Hoseok had dressed in his uncle’s tuxedo to take you to your prom, knowing how much you had gushed over going to prom since he had practically met you.
More memories came into play and hit you like a ton of bricks. You fell forward a bit, catching yourself on the arm of the chair previously occupied by Hoseok.
“Oh my God,” you whisper. You finally met his eyes and slowly began to walk over to him, a disbelieving pout on your face.
As you come closer to him, you’re hit with a new wave of emotions. This time, reminding you of all of the things he has done that have made your own heart flutter that you continuously pushed away.
The time that you first saw him after dance camp, and you noticed the way that his arms were a bit more toned than they were in the spring and you felt you heart rate increase, but blamed it on the frappucino you were drinking.
The time that you watched him in his first college dance showcase and you could see the passion in his face. The fluidity of his moves was enthralling, and continues to be to this day. You remember not being able to look away and getting a fluttery feeling in your stomach, but blamed it on the cold you were still getting over.
The time that you attended your first college party with him and he made sure that you didn’t get too out of control. He was dressed in an all black outfit that didn’t seem to suit his personality, but he still made it work and you felt your heart flutter again. When he pushed away the creepy guy that attempted to feel you up on the couch and your heart dropped into your stomach at the protectiveness you thought was coming from a big brother perspective.
The time that you got the offer for your full time job and he hugged you so tightly you thought he might snap you in half, and you got that same fluttery feeling in your stomach that you had all those times before.
How had you been so blind for so long?
Standing in front of him now, you look up at his face and graze his chin with your fingers, gingerly tilting his head up to look at yours.
Looking into his eyes briefly, you know instantly that you will not regret what you are about to do.
So you kiss him, and dear God it was like you had done it a million times before.
The way that you fall into each other so effortlessly, his hands grabbing at your sides as yours cupped his cheeks.
“I told you it would fucking happen! I knew she felt the same way!” Yeona yelled from behind you.
You break away from the kiss and immediately pull him into a hug, your head resting on his shoulder.
“You should have told me sooner,” you whisper.
“I couldn’t. I didn’t want to risk losing you completely,” he whispered back.
“Jung Hoseok,” you say in disbelief, pulling back a bit to look at his face. “Did you really think that little of me that you think I would cut you, someone that has stuck by my side for over twenty years, off in the blink of an eye because you have feelings for me that you thought I didn’t reciprocate?”
He simply stared at you, not knowing what to say.
You leaned your forehead against his, before whispering onto his lips, “You’re even stupider than I thought you were,” and kissing him again.
“Eh-hem,” you hear a throat clear from behind you again. Breaking away, you meet the eyes of Hana, arms crossed and giving you a smirk.
“Hana, if you’re not okay with this, we don’t have to-“
“Save it, I’ve been waiting for Hoseok to make a move for months. I’m glad you finally did. Just please keep the PDA to a minimum. I don’t need to see my cousin and my best friend sucking face and groping each other in front of me,” she shudders.
You laugh before turning back to Hoseok.
“Does this mean you’ll give me a chance?” Hoseok asks breathlessly.
“Of course it does, you idiot. Now kiss me again before I change my mind.”

Valentine (Izuku Midoriya x Reader)
So this is actually #7 from the Valentine’s Prompt List I reblogged, I just honestly couldn’t resist writing it!
“Oh, wait, wait, wait!” You gasped before rushing over to Izuku who had stopped dead in his tracks and looked up at you with surprised eyes. You carefully worked the stick of butter that he was about to drop into the mixing bowl out of his hands and placed it down on the counter.
“Sorry, this recipe just needs half butter and half margarine, so you need to grab margarine instead!” You said happily before putting the butter back into the fridge and searching around the kitchen for the margarine you knew you had taken out to soften before handing it over to him once you found it.
After a lot of persistent pleading, you got Aizawa to agree to let you use the kitchen at the dorms for a little bit while it wasn’t being used on the condition that you cleaned up and used your own ingredients. Valentine’s day was coming up in a few days and while you still planned to get a few small gifts for your boyfriend, you also wanted to make something up for the rest of your classmates and Izuku was more than happy to help. Well, half of it was because he loved how adorable you looked with that polka-dotted apron wrapped around your waist, but he didn’t really have to tell anyone that little fact.
“Ah sorry, my bad..I guess I’m still not as good with this sort of thing as you are!” He spoke with a sheepish smile on his face, though you waved of the little mistake and continued on with what you had been doing.
“It’s fiiine, I guess it wouldn’t have made that big of a difference, but I don’t trust myself enough to stray from the recipe.” You laughed while scooching him over a bit with your hip and cracking a few eggs into the same bowl he was using.
“Can you add the sugar and then start the mixer? I’m gonna finish up with the icing!”
The two of you had actually cooked and baked a few times together before this, either you going over to his home or him coming to yours before you had moved into the dorms. In your eyes, neither of you were really all that great of bakers and you would never be on the same level as his mother with cooking, considering the delicious meals she had allowed you to join in on whenever you were over studying with Izuku. Regardless, you liked spending time with him, plus if you and your friends got some homemade cookies out of it, it was a win-win situation.
With a nod and a confident thumbs up he poured in the sugar you had set aside and started the mixer on low. You began with sifting some powdered sugar into a bowl before adding both milk and butter. Once you finished you picked up the bowl and cradled it into your arms and made your way over to Izuku while mixing the ingredients together to check up on how the cookie batter was coming along.
“Does it look okay? I added all the ingredients how the recipe said to, but I’m still not sure..” He mumbled before looking up to you for answers while tilting the bowl a bit so you could see. He had come so far since middle school, yet he still seemed to lose confidence in himself dealing with the smallest of things.
“Looks great to me!” You exclaimed, leaning in to give him a quick appreciative peck on the cheek before taking the bowl out from under him. The smile on his face spoke hundreds of words he was always too afraid to say whenever the two of you had even the slightest of intimate moments, but you seemed too lost in your thoughts to notice the look he was giving you. He simply stood there and watched as you sprinkled flour out onto the tabletop followed by the cookie dough being plopped down on top. He liked to take in little moments like this when the faintest of smiles tugged at the corners of your lips, your happiness about whatever you were doing showing even if you didn't mean it to. He loved it because of that, because that’s when he was really sure that you were content and in a good mood.
“Oh hey can you roll this out for me?” You questioned, turning to him while holding up your fingers about a quarter inch apart from each other. “It needs about this thick.”
“Yeah, of course.” He responded while making his way over to you and getting to work with the rolling pin. You gave him another small smile before picking up the bag of Valentine’s shaped cookie cutters and opening and closing a few drawers on the hunt for some scissors to use to open them. Once you had them opened you put them next to where Izuku was working and started lining the two sheet trays you had placed out on the counter with parchment paper. After checking to make sure the oven had been heated to the right temperature, you wiped your hands together to get off any flour or anything before leaning up on your toes and resting your chin on Izuku’s shoulder to watch him finish up.
The close contact along with your watchful eyes made his cheeks turn a bit pink, but that didn’t stop him from finishing with what he was doing. When he was done, you moved to his side and pointed to the cookie cutters before picking out one for yourself.
“Now all we’ve got to do is cut ‘em out and stick ‘em in the oven.” You said, already beginning to cut out a few of your own and carefully place them on the tray. Izuku laughed at your enthusiasm before following in your footsteps and taking a cookie cutter of his own before cutting some out from the rolled out dough.
The two of you carried on with cutting out a few different shapes, rolling out the leftover dough, and cutting out more until you had used up all that you could. It didn’t take long for the cookies to bake once you had gotten all the trays in the oven and before you knew it you were onto what you thought was the most fun part.
“Well what color do I use?”
“You can use whatever colors you want, there isn’t any rules for cookie decorating y’know.”
You couldn’t help but laugh at how serious he seemed about the whole ordeal. He was constantly asking what should go where and what color looks best with what other color. It was a bit strange, but it was also incredibly cute and you were always inspired by how much passion he put into things that others might not think all that much about. Decorating took a bit longer than you had intended because of your fascination with your sweetheart of a boyfriend, Izuku having to constantly ask if you were okay when you had stopped to stare at him for too long.
When you finally had finished though, Izuku was kind enough to offer getting started on the dishes while you began boxing up the cookies despite you saying multiple times that you could handle both if he wanted to go relax or something. You tried your best to place the cookies away in an orderly manner, but they sort of ended up just being stacked up at random angles. By the time you were almost done, Izuku had actually finished with the dishes just in time to gasp and quickly step in front of you when you were just about to reach over for the last cookie.
“H-Hold on just a second! I can put that one away!” He sort of shouted in your face, his nervousness obviously shown in his wavering voice.
“Well I already have the rest all in the box here, it’s fine I can take care o-”
“Thi-This one isn’t going in there! It’s...different.” He sputters, quickly grabbing the cookie in his hand while still facing you.
Unbeknownst to you, during one of the few times you began spacing out while the two of you were decorating, he took the time to make one up especially for you. He knew it was a bit selfish since the cookies were supposed to be for your friends and with Valentine’s Day so close he had already gotten you some gifts anyways, but he just couldn’t help himself. You of course just assumed maybe he had messed one up or something and was afraid you’d be disappointed, so you just laughed and rolled your eyes at what you thought was a little game before gently taking his hand and coaxing it from behind his back.
You were surprised to see the large, pink heart shaped cookie with ‘I Love You (Name)’ piped onto the top of it in wobbly, mismatched writing. Izuku’s jaw set and his eyes looked down a bit when he saw the surprise on your face. He always got so nervous when he couldn’t decipher what you were thinking. After a moment of looking over what was honestly one of the sweetest gifts you had ever gotten, you couldn’t help the smile that spread from ear to ear on your face as a few happy tears pricked at the corners of your eyes. Maybe you were being a bit dramatic, but it was just so adorable and seeing that look on his face made your heart pound like it was your first date all over again.
You quickly placed the cookie down onto the counter, hugging him tightly and impulsively squishing his cheeks together in your hands before smothering his face with kisses only to be interrupted by words of thanks. That was enough for him to realize you didn’t hate the small present and he wrapped his arms around you tightly, trying his best not to laugh too hard as his cheeks burned red in response to the overflow of affection.
“I know it’s sort of...well, not great..but I just really wanted to make you one and it’s..the thought that counts? I guess that’s a bit-”
“Amazing! I love it, seriously! It’s not bad at all, I almost don’t want to eat it! It’s so cute too, I love the colors!” You gushed, unintentionally cutting him off while detaching yourself from him in order to pull out your phone and take a few pictures. He was about to continue his rant, but he stopped himself short when he saw that pure, honest smile radiating on your face. He felt embarrassed that he couldn’t give you something that looked more professional, sure, but he practically lived for that sunny smile regardless.
“Thank you so much Izuku, really. I seriously love it, almost as much as I love you.”
His smile softened at that statement, you always made those three words sound so casual yet they meant the world to him and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to keep hearing them every single day.
“Well, as long as you don’t love it more than me, then I’m happy with it.”
