i have a headcanon that narinder and the fox used to fight over who got dead people, and whether the fox or nari should get custody of the souls of the people the fox eats
narinder used to win usually, bc he had a crown and the backing of his siblings if he needed it, but the first time he sees the fox without his powers hes suddenly very much hoping the fox doesnt still hold a grudge after a thousand years

2022 for the movie ask
Bestie you picked a year that happens to have produced not one, but THREE of my favorite films in recent memory :')
There truly is no placing one film over the others for me when it comes to these three. They're all masterpieces and I will NOT tolerate pitting these bad bitches against each other ✨✨✨

I just saw a post criticizing Last Wish for how it handled Puss and Kitty’s relationship along with both of their characters as a whole, and I wanted to express my feelings in a way unattached from the post.
Spoilers below!
(I wanna, of course, say everyone can have their opinions, I just wanted to indirectly respond to some critiques I saw of the movie!)
First off, the OP mentioned how the movie made Kitty a feminist and ultimately prioritized her development, actions, and strengths, over Puss’s, which I disagree with.
The scene they specifically mentioned was when they were escaping Jack Horner’s factory, and Puss got his beard stuck.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which, of course, Puss got stuck there. He was paying attention to Kitty beating people up? And he wasn’t belittled in the process of the fight. They both made it out, and Kitty was the one with the map since she has her soft paws and could easily take it from Puss. This was established with their dynamic in the first movie as something she could easily trick him with.
Tumblr media
Throughout the rest of the movie, especially after they work out their conflict about Santa Coloma, they work as equals. Kitty even plays with the idea of sharing the wish with Puss because she TRUSTS him. It’s a mutual thing, as she believes he has changed enough to earn her trust, which we see he has. The gatito blade isn’t given to Puss as an insult or as a blow to his masculinity, but it’s almost like an olive branch. Kitty sees if she can truly trust him with something of hers again, and it ends up being what saves Puss’s life.
Tumblr media
Second, OP talked about how Puss’s character was generic and that he was a Flanderization of a character obsessing over the fact they are “a legend soon to be forgotten.”
This was the take I had the most issues with, and it's kinda what pushed me to make this post 😬. Puss struggled with his identity as a legend because it was what caused him to die every single time. He had no value for his life because he believed that he was untouchable. It’s what the Fearless Hero song is about. “Puss isn’t afraid. He’s never been touched by a blade.” All of these things happen in the movie because nobody is invincible. Heroes have panic attacks and face death, and through Kitty and Perrito, Puss was able to learn that his life was valuable. While the message itself is relatable for some, it should be, because learning to value life and the people in it is SO IMPORTANT.
Anyway.
The final thing I wanna address was how OP said Puss and Kitty’s relationship changed and Kitty was OOC.
First, it only makes sense that Puss and Kitty would have a different relationship than the original Puss in Boots movie since that was YEARS prior to this one. With that much of a time difference, the characters have room to change for better or worse.
Tumblr media
As for Kitty’s attitude toward Puss, it is totally justified. To bring back Santa Coloma, when the pair first meet again, it is obvious that there is tension between them because of what happened at the church, and Kitty has every reason to poke at him because he left her there. I think it’s totally in her nature to use her one chance to make fun of Puss in its entirety.
Tumblr media
Even if their getting married could be argued as an out-of-character action for the pair (even though I think their relationship absolutely could have led there.) Kitty knew deep down that Puss was too self-absorbed with his legend status to be able to fit her in his life alongside it. Puss’s regret for leaving her also shows his ego wall coming down because he wanted to be with her and not walk alone any longer.

The art style and the animation for The Last Wish was also! Insane! I love it so much! It has been such a treat to see big companies lean into less Pixar-y styles with more texture and personality.

I just remembered, that shortly after watching the Mario movie a few days after its theatrical release, I tried so hard to not think about it, but tiktok kept pushing Bowuigi content my direction as it did in the few weeks before the movie's release, and I would think, yeah its definitely up my alley, and it works but I'm not a mario franchise fan, the sonic franchise has my heart.... well apparently the mario brand decided if my heart was taken then they'd go after my head because Bowuigi literally started infesting my dreams and now I'm in a hole so deep I'm really not even looking for an escape, I'm embracing it
(Sorry for the tag rant, this is really turning into a personal post in the tags)

no but on that note DreamWorks actually breaks this rule a LOT if you look at their older films.
In prince of Egypt they have both the river or blood scene and the scene with the Israelites painting their doorframes with lambs blood
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and yea, you can argue that since this is a religious film and the blood was a major part of the story they where given more leeway on it but DreamWorks includes blood in other movies.
In Road to El Dorado we get a close up shot of blood that's almost identical to the one in puss in boots the last wish
Tumblr media
and ON TOP OF THAT we get another scene with Tezekel Kan where they show him cutting his hand and the blood poring out of it
Tumblr media
Granted these are older movies but still, DreamWorks has done this before to great success and its really cool to see this in newer movies.
I can't fanthom to explain you in full how much of a significant moment this is in animation
Tumblr media
You don't show blood in animated films, it's like almost a taboo thing. You can show characters getting beat up and bruised but never bleeding. It defies all corporate beliefs of making it a "kids movie". Even GDT's Pinocchio which has fucking nazis in it and guns shooting people never showed blood in it. It's just that sacred of a thing in animation that studios never cross.
But Puss in Boots, they showed it. Not only that, you get a fucking close up on it. Do you know how rare that is? The people who made it probably fought every tooth and nail to get this moment approved, because this is unprecedented in this industry. You don't show actual blood bleeding I cant stress how much this is such a nono in this industry.
But for this moment it's perfect, the inevitability of death in Puss in Boot's eyes, the amount of risk the studio took to get this moment in the film approved, shows how much DreamWorks really cares and wants this movie to not just be another haha kids film but for the adults watching it, the people who have seen the world and fear death, those with anxiety, get panic attacks, unsure about life the universe, getting married, being a family. These aren't ideas catered to kids.
Everytime I've seen people be like "oh studios need to stop making boring ass animations and actually make a film about serious topics and have better animation and care about the movie" THIS IS IT FOLKS. A STUDIO LISTENED AND IT'S OUT HERE IN YOUR FACE.
So seriously go watch Puss in Boots. It's incredible and you're missing out on something beautiful if you don't.

i think im going to decide on Puss in Boots (2011) being set during puss’s 5th life (the cannon death). all the shrek movies happen during his 7th life (the oven death).
during his 1st, 3rd, and 4th lives, puss’s design is a little bit different (1st - red bandana, 3rd - green hat & cape, 4th - super buff), which rules them out as the first movie’s puss. his 2nd life would’ve been too soon, as it had been 7 years since humpty and puss last saw each other, when they were teens. i think the 5th life works well for Puss in Boots (2011).
in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, obviously we find out that kitty and puss were set to be married. now, considering that they’re both personalities that i think would take a while to commit to that, i’d say that at some point during puss’s 6th life (the shellfish death), santa coloma happened. i mean, seriously, i think kitty would’ve realized that he was having an allergic reaction sooner than he did if she’d been there. also, if they were still together, why would puss be going to a fancy restaurant all alone?
the 7th life housing the shrek films obviously makes sense - gingy is there for the death, so they have to be set before then. i think that after puss’s 6th life, puss tried to start anew and traveled to far, far away - away from spain, where he’d just left the woman he loved.
anyways, hope y’all find this useful, if you’re trying to figure out a timeline for the lives like i am!
