Hmm.... yes Samatoki has the right to be angry but that flattens him to a good for nothing thinks first asks questions later type of thug which is absolutely not what his character is. Especially with how the anime portrays him, it seems like there's only one emotion that he feels at any moment and that is anger. Which, fair he is an angry boy, but thats just one facet of his character. He’s also logical and not that sore of a loser, seeing that he still has room to grow (if you want an anime example, refer to the previous episode where he genuinely wonders what he could have done to treat Nemu better)

I think my biggest gripe with the adaptation is the flattening of all the characters TBH. I only really see it in Samatoki since I understand his character the most but I also see hints of it with Rio, Hifumi, and Gentaro. Most of the characters are just flattened into 2D tropes and made to act those tropes out. Which, y’know is the basis of each character but the series has built upon each character so well that its kinda jarring seeing them all so flat

good:

Glen Bateman, Tom Cullen, Nick Andros, Larry Underwood casting/rewrites/adjustments

(Jovan Adepo deserves full credit for me not only tolerating Larry but actually liking him most of the time cause hoo boy I hated his guts in the book)(also!!! he played Teenager Michael Murphy in The Leftovers and it’s TRIPPING me out because he is OLDER than me and I never would have guessed it watching that show!!!)

(also it’s SO nice to see Brad Henke playing a teddy bear of a guy bc he is shaped like a friend but I’ve literally only ever seen him play absolute monsters)(I luv Tom Cullen)

dayna jurgens best character in the book best character in the series

I wasn’t sure about Owen Teague as Harold bc book Harold is overweight and pimply and kind of greasy and off-putting and Owen is skin and bones and good-looking but he projects creepy and sus very well. he is doing my boy Justice

speaking of, odessa young REALLY sells "girl stuck with a creepy guy who has an unrequited crush on her" like you can feel the discomfort and borderline contempt streaming from her pores

appreciated the rewrites of Rita to make her whole deal not horribly sexist and weird (same goes for most of the women tbh). Heather Graham did great

updating it to 2020ish works well. Glen vaping all the time = legendary

they did a good job of trimming and conflating some of the stuff so the story stays focused. things they cut MOSTLY weren't super important

james marsden is fine (actually better than I expected in this) but he always fails to excite me. gary sinise in the OG miniseries was a better vibe for Stu and they should've gone for someone with more of the everyman energy. Marsden looks like a catalog model and doesn't seem to be able to bring an observable personality to his roles (sorry man)(on a more positive note this is why he was a perfect Scott Summers)

Whoopi Goldberg is a fine actress and apparently in contrast to a lot of critics I’m actually fine with her casting but mother abigail is SUPER under-used and way less developed than she should be-- we know literally nothing about her outside of her occasional appearance to scold and/or guide and that lack of personhood plays heavily into into the “magical negro” trope which. ugh. at least in the book she had a ton of backstory and family and stuff to do outside of “be the magical prophet for everybody else”

I love the whole Skarsgard family and am always happy to see one of them. that said, Alex lacks Randall's bouncy gleeful chaos energy and sheer malevolence. also he whispers all the time and I'm not sure what that choice is all about (no lbr that’s just an askars acting habit and outside of Eric from True Blood it’s not a great one)

bad:

not enough dayna screen time

pacing is weird and makes it really hard to get invested. starting at the free zone in Boulder and only jumping back to how they actually started/how they GOT to Boulder in pieces every episode feels really disruptive. not that it’s hard to keep track of, but it’s hard to really feel anything for anyone with such a disjointed narrative. the trip to Boulder is half the novel and it’s super important for establishing character dynamics, rivalries, motivations and personalities and if you meet these people mid-story after their arc is half finished and only get fragments of the VERY IMPORTANT ESTABLISHING STORY every now and again it feels like being robbed of setup and then payoff? idk. I hate it. I think they should have started at the beginning and gone thru chronologically, the story works way better that way

for that matter, playing all coy and mysterious with Randall and only showing Vegas for the first time in episode 5?? when the book has us there every step of the way? I don’t need a 1:1 adaptation but I do think following Vegas developments is super helpful re: understanding stakes and how much of a threat your enemy is, and with so little focus ON the enemy, it’s just not scary?

SPEAKING of Vegas what the actual hell. apologies for going “but in the book!!!” so many times but literally in the book Vegas would be a very appealing prospect for just about anyone. there’s electricity, there are supplies, there’s peace, there’s structure and organization. iirc Dayna is even tripped out on her recon mission because she makes friends with people and is struck by how normal and decent everyone seems? WELL this adaptation just threw that out the window and just went full fledged hedonistic sin bin full of just deeply unpleasant people that are more caricatures than characters. everyone there sucks turds. lacks any kind of depth. HUGE swing and a miss bc it hits so much better if you’re like “these are largely decent people lured in by the promise of stability, making moral compromises because they’re scared and trying to survive and Randall’s leadership is a huge temptation” vs “every single person here would roofie my drink and not feel a twinge of conscience about it”

every single choice made with regards to Nadine. badly miscast, robbed of the kickass witch’s streak aesthetic, set up as a consummate villain from the beginning (her constant struggles with her fate are totally omitted till it’s way too late for them to be in any way believable), relationship with Larry is basically nonexistent, and the planchette incident from her childhood is revealed much too early so it’s devoid of any real sense of horror (portrayed as a catalyst for lifelong villainy rather than a late-in-story revelation that she was set on a path against her will). done right she’s complicated and sympathetic at least until her complete heel-turn, in this series she’s just 2d and dull

randall beating bobby terry to death instead of ripping him apart with TEETH was a stupid change made to spite me personally. I mean can you IMAGINE how good that scene could have been

Hello hello! Flash Fiction Friday again! I wanted to give you something a little more fun since I won’t be able to write for a while. I’m going to the land of beans on toast with my dad and I’m very excited! I’ve never been on a plane before, much less over seas! Anyways, I hope you enjoy this story! Feedback is appreciated ^u^

It’s never a good sign when your cat stares intently beyond you. You can tell they’re not daydreaming, but you don’t really want to know what they’re looking at. So, when my own furred goblin was sitting bolt upright on my chest in the middle of the night, staring at something, I did my best to ignore him and go back to staying up way too late watching videos on my phone. His persistence waivered my resolve. Usually he would flop himself against my face in a loving kind of smother. The closer to suffocation I am, the more he feels accomplished in his affection giving. But not tonight. He stared with those big green eyes into the space above my head. I figured I should at least try to assure him that the only thing silly enough to be up in the deep dark night was us.

“What are you looking at Bud? You staring at ghosties?” The last word was lost in a yawn.

His soft black fur was warm against my palms. He hunkered down, devoid of his usual purr, still staring.

“If it’s a demon, are you going to earn your rent and protect me like those animals in the hero pet compilations?” I kissed his little nose. “No, probably not. You’d leave me hanging, wouldn’t you, Basil Boy. I’d save you y’know. I mean, I probably wouldn’t be very good against a demon, but the thought is there.” Another yawn. At least my rambling was putting someone to sleep. Basil’s paw silenced my next round of spouted nonsense. The cheek of this cat! It’s hard to contain giggles at one in the morning. Harder still to contain the shriek. Long, slender fingers stretch like tendrils reached down from above. Cracked nails barely glanced my scalp when I looked up in my mirth. Fight, flight, or freeze. I froze. Burning, swirling, bottomless pits on a face of twisted fur matted with what I could only describe as ichor. The hand paused over me, deliberating. Its head tilted slowly, slowly, mechanically unwinding itself from the body while the neck grew longer and longer. Hot goats’ breath fanned my face. I sunk back as far as the twelve or so pillows allowed. It didn’t move. Basil, surprisingly, stayed hunkered on my chest. Of course he wouldn’t make things easier and just run away.

For several long seconds, we stayed like that. Me, pressed into my bed. Basil, squat on my torso. And the creature, looming above. No one moved. No one spoke. There’s an unwritten conversational rule where, if a silence stretches longer than four seconds, it becomes increasingly awkward. Not going to lie, I already don’t do well with social stuff. The more time stretched the more I hoped something would, well, happen.

“Sooo…” I began, tapping my index fingers against the mattress. “What brings ya here?”

It drew back. Not by a lot, still very much in my personal space bubble, but I’m not complaining. It was a start. Its mouth parted, tasting the thought before voicing it. (Or preparing to lunge, I’m not exactly a strange night creature psychologist.) Huh. There’s a beak under all that wiry fur. Cool.

“soOoO…” My own voice parroted back, warped. I guess the beak is just for show. The noise reverberated around us, no indication of its source. Other voices mixed in, creating a jittery, juttering kind of speech. “SsSooOO… SsssoooOoo…”

“… Cool… Are you uh.. Here to kill me maybe?”

“NnoOo.”

That’s promising. I’m sure they’re a very honest.. being…

“Are you a ghost?”

“nnNOo.”

Hmm. “Aaare you a demon?”

“YyEsS.”

K. “Are you here on business or pleasure? Not Pleasure pleasure. Fun pleasure. Like, a holiday or something.”

They pause, crinkling a long finger against their chin. A thinking pose. “PleAsUReee. NoTTt PPleaSuREE pleasure.”

Thank cat beans. That could have been awkward. Their neck clicked as they turned to look at Basil.

“PLeAsuRe…”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa. You’re not here to steal my cat are you?”

No response. I sat up, drawing Basil closer to myself.

“I mean like, you can pat him if you don’t have that death touch thing going on, but he’s my baby. You can’t take him.”

“Ssoofftt…” They trailed a finger through his fur. The traitor started purring. “NicCee…”

Scooting up so I was sitting, I patted the bed, motioning for the demon to pop a squat beside me. They complied, creaking as they unfolded themselves joint by joint, from their ceiling perch. Basil wiggled from my grip, smacking me in the face with his tail in his haste to double cross me and sit in the demon’s lap. Somehow, I got the feeling this wasn’t their first meeting.

“So that’s Basil.”

“BaAssIiLll. LLikE BaSsIlL.”

“He’s a cool little dude. Do you have cats in the demon world, or where ever you come from?”

“CaaAnn. WaAnTtT BaaSiLLl.”

“Again, and this is super important, you can’t have Basil. He is my baby cat.” I leaned back, shoulders popping in that satisfying way. “Although, we might be able to arrange something for you.”

The demon tilted its head again. I could have sworn there was excitement in those deep, deep, deep pits. Deep, dark.. What was I saying? Oh yeah. Arrangements.

“One month. If you can show me that you are able to properly care for a cat, I’ll get you one in a months’ time. You can stay here and show me with Basil, or show me where you live and that you are able to fulfil a cats’ needs. They need more than food you know. You’ve gotta play with them, desex them, take them to the vet, make sure they have grass to munch on. It’s a big responsibility. I’ll show you some good websites though so you’re not going in blind or anything. What do you think? Sound good?”

They nodded. “SssoUnd GoOd.”

And that’s how I ended up with a demon roommate for a month. Once we got over the initial awkwardness like bathroom schedules, possible dietary issues, and the appropriateness of guests from the underworlds, it was actually pretty nice. We had long discussions about cats, obviously, but also about life. Our experiences were totally different, but we discovered new things together. They made a point of watching 2D animated movies with me and I got really into demonic card games. It was a lot of fun. We added each other on pokemon go and finally cleared some research tasks. They showed me their realm (more pokestops than you would expect) and we worked together to construct a proper cat enclosure using Ikea hacks and the Kitten Lady’s youtube videos. I even had a nice little existential… What’s the opposite of crisis? Calmness? Low-fi study music moment? Experience? Where life after death was confirmed. Damnation may be upgraded to Ikea jigsaws now. Sorry about that. That one’s on me…

It felt like no time at all had passed between that late night conversation and walking into the local animal shelter. The demon (who I should have mentioned wanted to be called Toto after the fuzzy bear dude from My Neighbour Totoro) had taken a human(ish) appearance. A totally generic stranger that was easily forgotten but that something nagged at you that it wasn’t quite right. Today was the day. We’d been approved as potential adopters and were picking out Toto’s new best friend. The lady gave us a friendly greeting and led us straight to the cat room at the back, debriefing along the way. I always forgot how loud it could be back there. Cats yowled and mewed, much to the chagrin of their quieter shelter mates. We looked at kittens and adults, fluffy cats and patchy cats, noisy cats and shy cats. Each one Toto inspected with care. I did not envy their choice. If I could, I’d take them all home. Toto stopped at the far corner. I peeked over their shoulder to see which one had caught their attention.

It was… Unfortunate. A scraggly brown cat with fur guaranteed to mat at a slight breeze. A short little thing with, what I think, was a snaggle tooth sticking out of his mouth. It was not a pageant winner. If someone took a year old loaf of bread and had it trampled by a herd of heavily concussed camels, and one buttered donkey, stuck whiskers on the rounder side and a bottle brush on the rear, it’d be in the same ball park as this ugly cat. It opened its mouth and gargled at us.

“ThHiSs OnEE iS GooOd.”

“I thought you’d say that.” I checked the info card. Not much to go on. The shelter guessed she was about 14. Ah, man. That’s… That’s not great…

“I’m, I’m not sure this is a good choice for your first cat, Bud. She’s pretty old… It’s a pretty difficult thing to go through, y’know, when your pet passes away…”

“NoO gUaRantEE FoR AnYtHiNG.”    

“That’s true… I’m definitely not saying don’t get an old cat, just don’t want you to get hurt so soon… Would she stay with you as a spirit cat?”

“If ShE WiLLs It. CaTs WaNdER.”

“Oh. Sweet. Let’s get her then.”

“yeS.”

“What are you going to call her?”

He inspected her again. Human skin crinkling into a smile when she sneezed and left her tongue poking out.

Winter Anime 2019 Part 4: That’s all, folks.

Over already? This is a pretty thin season with not a lot of shows, so it’s not that surprising that there’s not many good ones either. Still, a weak showing. Oh well, let’s get it over with. There were a few decent ones in the last batch.

What: Dimwitted schoolgirl is good at some vaguely defined virtual fighting sport, changes school based on it, finds out relevant club has been abolished. Forecast says: 5 member plot incoming.

❌ I think it’s already clear this show isn’t very ambitious, and not very well written either. A game adaptation at its laziest.

❌❌ Man, this girl is STUPID. What the hell.

❌ The rest of the cast are less stupid (which isn’t hard), but that just means they’re so forgettable they might as well not exist.

❌❌ It looks cheap, and by that I mean really really cheap. The character design is ISO standard anime and it’s mostly on model, but that’s as good as it gets. The animation just sucks. That’s a death sentence for an action/sports show with terrible characters.

Bermuda Triangle - Colorful Pastrale

What: Japanese Spongebob, as in cute mermaids. Doing things optional.

❌ To make this quick, this is almost exactly Pastel Memories, only every problem is just a little less extreme. It has fewer characters, it’s looking slightly better, there’s a tiny bit more going on, the setting is mildly more interesting. That still means it is:

❌❌ 1. A boring mess in which a handful of samey girls do nothing of much interest in a location that should be unique, but isn’t.

❌❌ 2. Conspicuously cheap. It even has the same sightline problems.

❌❌ 3. Featuring a character model sheet that is “off” even under the best circumstances. This time due to the very offputting decision to give everyone blobby triangular irises.

❌❌ Unlike Pastel Memories (which was an ad for a mobile game) this is an anime original, so it really has no excuse being this lame.

�� I find it amusing that Pastel Palettes are providing the OP for an anime, and it’s not the one currently airing that they’re actually characters in.

Endro~!

What: Kiraralike comedy thing in a generic JRPG setting.

♎ Namori character designs, so it’s like Spyce in that it just seems like the Yuru Yuri cast cosplaying a genre. But hey, Namori character designs do look good.

❌ I’m not as done with generic JRPG settings as with generic isekai settings, but it’s still a real problem since the former is now a subset of the latter. Mildly making fun of it does not improve things much either.

✅ The tone is cutesy and pleasant. I find this much preferable to something like Mahoujin Guru Guru, which is pretty much the same thing but with abrasive, high-intensity slapstick instead.

✅ It’s backing that up with generally high-quality, agreeable pastel looks.

❌ Not being annoying is a start, but beyond that this seems very middle of the road and predictable. I don’t get much out of the genre “parody” and simply being cute is still not an unique selling point in anime.

Grimms Notes The Animation

What: Did someone say JRPG? This is a mobile one, vaguely based on fairy tales as the title implies.

✅ This universe runs on the idea that every NPC’s fate is controlled by a preset story they’re aware of. You could make a good story about that if you took it seriously. It even does that somewhat, but only to the degree that you’d expect from a throwaway sidequest in a moderately well-written JRPG.

❌ And the reason for that is that it has to make room for being a JRPG, of course. Read: It’s irritatingly mechanics- and combat-focused. Stuff like the characters changing form when in fights just seems overly complicated and adds nothing.

❌ Said combat looks competent, but not good enough to make up for detracting from what could have been an interesting setting. Merc Storia did this aspect far better (by usually not doing it at all).

❌ So it ends up being better than expected, but then that only amounts to a disappointment.

Kaguya-sama wa Kokurasetai / Kaguya-sama: Love Is War

What: Kaguya and Miyuki are in the student council of a prestigious school and HATE HATE HATE each other. Specifically, they hate the part where the other one won’t just finally admit their love.

✅ The joke here is that it’s operating on full intensity at all times, over the most simple matters. It’s pretty much Kaiji, only about dating - complete with hammy narrator. This is another one of those shows where I can’t say with certainty that it’s solid, but I had a blast during the first episode.

✅ Regarding Quintuplets, I made it clear that I love me some sparks in my romantic comedies. It doesn’t get much more explosive than this.

✅ The characters are comparable to Quints too: Smart scheming upstart vs. rich scheming ojou, with a simpleminded girl in the middle that ends up winning more often than not simply by not overdoing it.

✅ The visuals are just as over the top as the proceedings depicted. Occasionally a filter massacre, but mostly cool.

♎ The long-term viability of this show depend entirely on whether they can consistently come up with scenarios that work, which isn’t a given. Also, this is so intense it might become tiresome - I already felt some fatigue towards the end of the first episode. We’ll see, I guess.

Kakegurui ××

What: Some weirdos think they can crash the party at Hyakkaou with an intent to scare the daylights out of Yumeko and Midari, of all people. Let’s just say they were not as prepared as they thought.

✅ As you might have guessed by me watching the sequel, I liked Kakegurui. It has its problems, but if you’re down for some crazypants madness, this show delivers.

✅ This is one of the better episodes of it too, because it gets right into it and the game they play is dead simple. Kakegurui was never about smart moves or strong characters, so not having anything detract from our girls deriving the entirely wrong sort of pleasure from danger is a plus.

♎ Sadly, the OP is a step down (though still great) and the ED is simply an inferior, overcomplicated version of the magnificent original one. They seem to know this too, because they play the OP cut of Deal with the Devil in its entirety for a montage. The rest of the production is on par with the original though, so it’s fiiiine. Oh well.

❌ It got Netflix’d again and the subs situation is dire. Since this is one I actually like, I might have to wait for the official release.

Kouya no Kotobuki Hikoutai / The Magnificent Kotobuki

What: Piston-engined fighter plane pornography.

✅ This delivers where Girly Air Force failed: Close to zero exposition, the majority of the episode is just planes dogfighting with barely any talking either. And that part is executed really well. I think the plane startup sequence alone is as long as the total of Girly’s airtime.

✅ Guess what, it’s Tsutomu Mizushima, previously known for unbridled panzer (und girls) pornography, and boy can you tell. However, this cuts out a lot of GuP’s bullshit: A plane doesn’t have the cast of K-ON in it, it’s not over-the-top zany, and whatever this universe is, it can’t be as insipid as GuP’s. The classy milwank exists you guys, we found it.

✅✅ The music really helps here, sky pirates vs zeppelins just wouldn’t work without some classic swashbuckling orchestra background. Fat sound mixing on the dakka too. It’s great.

♎ Can’t really say much about the narrative because we kinda skipped that in this episode aside from the obvious, but Mizushima’s Shirobako collaborator Michiko Yokote is writing it, and that’s a good sign.

❌ Now we’re getting to the elephant in the room though: There’s no way the planes wouldn’t be CG in 2019, but the characters are CG too, and their animation is mediocre. Also, they did the KADO thing where they 2D-animated the side characters that aren’t important enough to model. This has the funny side effect that you can tell who’s going to die real soon by them looking better. It’s far from great, but probably a worthy tradeoff if the mechanical side is this extensive and also delivers.

✅ This is definitely not for everyone, since you have to have more than a casual appreciation for those magnificent girls in their flying machines. I do, though.

What: A chunk of Shibuya gets teleported to the dystopian future, local doomsday prepper gets handed a large robot because he’s special.

❌ A Goro Taniguchi joint being a poorly conceived scifi mess? Say it ain’t so! I especially dig the tryhard English jargon (mecha: “String Puppet”, monsters faction: “Revisions”, particular monster, I think?: “Civilian”, tacticool operetah: “Balancer”).

❌ Works very hard to characterize the main character, to the detriment of everyone else. A for effort, but you made an unlikeable asshole though.

❌ This is another full CG show, with the quality of the animation being curiously variable. Sometimes it’s well above average and sometimes it’s painful. There doesn’t seem to be much method to it.

✅ Tries to establish stakes by being mondo edgy and graphically murderizing some poor bystanders. It’s adorable.

❌ If you’re really jonesing for some mecha, you can watch all of this on Netflix right now. It’s not like you have any alte- wait, Egao no Daika has mecha too. Well there you go then. That’s a better show.

Asking Kodaka Kazutaka about 7 Years of Dangan Ronpa

It’s been about 7 years since Dangan Ronpa 1 came out in 2010. Since then that new IP has grown to include anime, stage shows, manga, and other media and become a beloved series. While the series has been spreading since the release of the first game, the man who birthed it, Kodaka Kazutaka, has become a name that echoes throughout the industry. For Kodaka, who has said he is taking a break from Dangan Ronpa, he looks back over the seven years he has continued the franchise and what he plans to do in the future.

No direct spoilers, just really goddamn long.

Having Had a Rich Experience, He is Taking a Break

Interviewer: So despite that with the re-release of Zettai Zetsubou Shoujou the entire Dangan Ronpa series is now on the PS4, you plan to take a break from the series?

Kodaka: Since I’ve been working nonstop without pause this entire time, I’d like to take a break to rest. I’m going to have to recharge before I make my next move.

I: So the Kibougamine series has continued up through 3, with V3 being a separate story about Saishuu Gakuen. Since things were pretty handily wrapped up, everything up through V3 gives the impression of being a kind of “season 1″. 

K: The Kibougamine series can be summed up as such, including everything before V3, but I don’t think of them as “what comes before” and “what comes after”. Back when the second game had just come out, I got a chance to speak with someone from TYPE-MOON, who told me that Back to the Future was a famous series that included three installments, so at that moment I thought that if I were to take a break I would do so after making a third installment.

I: If you think about how the series has progressed to the third main installment, it really has become increasingly impressive as it goes. V3 had particularly rich direction.

K: There are many different kinds of adventure games, including 2D ones we used as a base and titles that used motion similar to the Ace Attorney series, but aside from Ace Attorney, I think the techniques in V3 show off the pinnacle of direction. I feel like I’ve made something that could be called the pinnacle of text-based adventure games. I think it would be difficult to make a text based adventure game better than this. This was another reason I decided to take a hiatus. I figured I couldn’t do more than I had to cause a fuss on the net with the final developments of V3.

I: True, the series always causes some kind of stir, but it never would have reached this point if it hadn’t been such a great new IP.

K: Because of that, I want people who have never played to start from the first game.

I: The first game is the easiest to play, huh.

K: If someone who knows nothing about the series plays it, I think their expectations will definitely be undercut. I want them to play. I wonder how many Famitsu readers have played Dangan Ronpa. I mean, 100% of readers have played Nier Automata, right?

I: It’s pretty popular, but I doubt the rate of people who have played is 100%…

K: Speaking of Nier, Yokoo-san (Yokoo Tarou, director of the Nier series) said that Nier fans are Dangan Ronpa fans. That means that fans of the popular Nier Automata should also be Dangan Ronpa fans, so Nier fans, please play Dangan Ronpa. Let’s make this small, insignificant thing make big headlines!

I: So people who bought Nier should buy Dangan Ronpa, haha.

K: That’s what was said before Nier Automata came out. It’s too late to take it back now, haha. Please write “Yokoo Tarou Guranteed It.” In nice, thick lettering.

I: Got it, haha. Dangan Ronpa 1 came out in 2010, which means that it will be about 7 years old this November. Do you feel that things have changed greatly in your life from before the series?

K: Plenty of things have changed. Looking back it’s probably been about nine years since development began, and I was at the end of my twenties back then, meaning I’ve spent most of my thirties on this series. I mean they say that a man changes most in his thirties, right? So much so that I think you could say that I’ve changed completely.

I: This has been the period that has defined you, huh Kodaka-san. This rich time that you’ve spent.

K: It went by in a flash. When I finish a work, it’s not that I completely separate myself from it, I still remember the content, it’s just that I don’t really look back or mull over regrets. While making the anime, I replayed 1 and 2, and looking back they really were well-made.

I: When you replayed, did you complete both games?

K: I played to the very end. Particularly when making DR3, the anime staff looked over the previous installments to start making the plot, but there were some tough parts. Parts where we really had to look for the best route to join things up well. “If things are said this way, it will match up nicely, huh” was the kind of the thing I thought while I replayed. They gave off more of the feeling of works produced individually, rather than as part of a series. It was as if 1 had been put aside while developing 2. There was no feeling of unity.

I: So to what extent did you foresee Dangan Ronpa becoming a series?

K: I didn’t at all. I didn’t plan on making 2 a continuation of 1. At the end of the first game I put in a part where Monokuma gets up, but I only really intended it to make the player feel like there was room for some other big bad to exist somewhere. But after the game went on sale, the players took that as a sign that there’d be a continuation, and I was pretty surprised that they took it that way.

I: So when 2 was released, you didn’t have any plans for 3.

K: None. There were anime and stage shows, but I didn’t think of it as a project, just that things were being made by animation and drama studios. It was like Dangan Ronpa became a series while I was working on all the different parts. I think the moment when I realized it was a series was while working on the first game’s anime adaptation. “So this has become a series,” I thought. Yet that didn’t change how installments got made. It just meant I met a lot of new people.

I: Ah, so it was personal growth then, haha.

K: I haven’t changed much on the inside. I’ve just grown up a bit. Though I guess that makes sense since I’m getting older, haha. That means my salary has gone up, too!

I: Oh ho ho, I’m interested to know by how much.

K: Compared to when I started at the company, my salary has gone up to an overwhelming degree. Typically, how much does a person’s salary go up over the course of ten years?

I: It depends on the company and the person, but about 1.5 times…?

K: Well then, I’ve gone up quite a bit then, haha.

I: I’m going to write that down, haha.

K: Please write “Spike Chunsoft hands out raises like crazy!” Well, I don’t know about anyone else’s salary, but hey.

Dangan Ronpa, Creator Approved

K: Ah, I remember how Dangan Ronpa got recommended. It was because various famous creators called it interesting and it got spread via word of mouth.

I: Ah, because Narita Ryougo started it, it left this impression that it was being recommended by writers.

K: Nasu Kinoko from TYPE-MOON, Urobuchi Gen from Nitro Plus, and the writer Sanda Makoto all said that it was interesting. The truth is I signed up for Twitter just to see what they were saying about it. Kanda Sayaka also blogged about her thoughts on the game as well.

I: Both the game and entertainment industries received the first game well, didn’t they.

K: The first game carried this sense of being inferior. Probably also because it was from Spike, haha. Since it was a genre that resembled the adventure genre but wasn’t so easily categorized, and it involved Ooyama Nobuyo yet had all of these weird characters. I guess it might have really been a landmine.*

(*Translator’s Note: Kodaka uses the phrase 地雷臭 which means that something gives off the sense of being inferior, but it literally means to “reek of being a landmine”)

I: It certainly gives off the sense of being a kind of niche act, haha.

K: I think that creators are the kind of people to thrust themselves into landmine properties. It’s a thing like, “Even if it’s bad, I can get some content out of it!” Then, when they actually played, they were shocked: “Huh, this is actually pretty good?” So that’s why the game got such good reviews, haha.

I: I think for people in the industry, what made it was the various developments in Dangan Ronpa. Because of this idea that Dangan Ronpa = Kodaka, everyone accepts it as testament to your abilities.

K: I don’t think anyone really recognizes me as skilled though.

I: Oh, you don’t think so?

K: It’s the same with fans, but I always feel like there’s a sense of “It’s just a text adventure, you know?” going on. Yokoo-san really is making a fool of me, huh, haha.

I: No, no. That’s not true at all, haha.

K: Yokoo-san would say the same thing. But Uchikoshi-san is definitely making a fool of me!

I: Even though he also makes text adventure games, haha.

K: So if he tries to make fun of me I’ll just come back with “You make games in the same genre” haha. Other people may praise me, but I always feel like in their heart of hearts they’re thinking “You don’t make games, you make reading material.”

I: Kodaka-san, is that how you feel deep down?

K: A bit, yeah. Because I like games myself. I definitely can’t make something like Ueda Fumito or Sakurai Masahiro’s work, or the Legend of Zelda. I look up to that. And even as I admire them, I can’t help but think “Shit! All I can do is words!”

I: I see. But I think that many creators feel like they can’t write scenarios the way you can.

K: They might also be thinking that it’d be nice to make a game with a small number of people.

Big Text: I was able to hit my peak with V3. Having done that, I’m going to take a hiatus.

After Taking a Break, What Does Kodaka Plan to Make Next?

Top Text: Dangan Ronpa is like the daughter my wife has borne.

I: When you give interviews, it seems that your team is always raising the bar higher with each new installment. Was that intentional?

K: To start, we wanted to make a game that was exciting to us, and so we were able to make the first one, but then after that we wanted to get the same reaction out of our customers. So when we decided to make the second game, we decided that it had to be exciting. I wouldn’t say moreso than 1, but we were thinking that we could change tracks and really get it out into the world, so we were able to make something we were proud of. Before the player even got their hands on it, we knew that if the game didn’t excite us, it wouldn’t be very interesting. So I suppose you could say that that was raising the bar.

I: So until you got something that excited you, you wouldn’t give the go ahead?

K: It was more like we’d fix it. If something wasn’t exciting, we’d do it over. Later, when talking about it in an interview, we could be cool about it, but then that article wouldn’t be very interesting. Instead, words overflowing with emotion would be better. There were things we worried about during development, especially with 2 and V3 right before the endgame. Things like “this isn’t finished at all” or “this has no direction” got said. Despite that, we believed that if we were to bring the original idea to life, the player would be excited by it. We simply thought that if we didn’t find it exciting, the consumers wouldn’t buy it. We didn’t want to be badmouthed later, so we told ourselves “that probably isn’t the case” as a kind of defense mechanism. For that reason, it's better not to do interviews. Since we’re always working to create the best masterpiece we can, obviously it’s not easy to talk big about it.

I: Well said. If the Dangan Ronpa series were to continue from here, how would you want it to continue?

K: I’d want to try making a fighting game.

I: Where you could enjoy both story and competition?

K: I don’t think it’d need a story. I want a fighting game with all the characters from 1, 2, 3, and V3. I don’t need to be involved with it, I just want to play it.

I: Would you give it to a studio good at developing fighting games…

K: Contract work and collaborations are mostly handled by producers, but my personal desire is to see a collab effort in a different genre. I also would like to see Dangan Ronpa as made by someone who isn’t me. I think it’s possible that my personal touch is fettered to being a big hit. If I were to make it, I think that it would end up having a bunch of betrayal, wild content, parody, or dirty jokes, haha. Dangan Ronpa would probably sell better without all of those things. That is to say, if it won’t sell, I don’t want it to be made. I don’t want it to ruin the reputation of the previous installments….haha.

I: I think what would make it sell would be the quality of the content.

K: If it were to end up being like Persona, where the first and second games were good, but its reputation really took off with the third game…I would want to surrender my hopes for it to someone else. If that were to happen with Dangan Ronpa, I could say “Once, long ago, I used to make that.”

I: You’re talking like the parent of a popular franchise, haha.

K: Seems like people will say things like “How long is he going to go on about that?” or “He’s always still got his flagship work Dangan Ronpa” haha. But for better or for worse, V3 was my limit to making DR.

I: Well then, if Dangan Ronpa exists in the future, you want it to be something you couldn’t make yourself.

K: It’s less that I want it to get sharper and more that I want it to be accepted by countless people. I think as a series goes on, it will continue to get more of an edge, but I think it would be difficult to get sharper than V3. More than that, rather than a grand work, I want something that lots of people will love. You probably don’t need Monokuma either.

I: Have you thought about what you want to do next, Kodaka-san?

K: I have. The genre would be similar to the adventure game one. The details aren’t decided yet, but an action game or RPG or something would be good too. I definitely want to make those three some day. Though I don’t think I’ll be making an RPG at present.

I: So then, it wouldn’t be Dangan Ronpa, since as we said at the start, you’re stepping away from the series. 

K: Right now, I haven’t thought about continuing it, but even though I don’t know if I’ll ever return to it, I feel as though I’ve already made the best Dangan Ronpa I can. I don’t have any proof though, haha.

I: So the next game you make may be an adventure game, or it may be some other genre.

K: That’s right. I already have something I want to make, so while I’m honing that, I’m getting absorbed in various forms of entertainment. I get the feeling they’re going to tell me to get back to work soon though, *pained smile*.

I: Final question. What exactly is Dangan Ronpa to you, Kodaka-san?

K: It’d be pretty boring if I said it was something good, huh. Uhhhh, it’s a source of revenue!

I: What a waste!

K: If I were to answer seriously, the best answer would be “it’s like the daughter my wife bore.” The moment it went on sale it wasn’t mine anymore, but because it went on to become popular, I provided cover fire. Though I suppose it’s possible that I might be thought of as getting in the way, with my daughter telling me “stand back, I can make it on my own” haha.

I: Well you’re being an overprotective dad, haha.

K: My creation and my fans are probably sick of me, but it’s still my self-made treasure. If I were to include everything, it really is as if the series is my daughter borne by my wife. So if my daughter were to get more popular, like the father who has raised a famous sports star, I might give a speech as the parent of the series, haha.

- wish we got to see more of Keith and Lance’s internal conflicts, because they come up (e3 when Keith is just getting mad and then abruptly flips his switch -- we didn’t see much emotional progression there, and then e6 when Lance comes in to talk to Keith about the Lions and whether he really is the 6th wheel and Keith just?? brushes him off?? like saying “Let Pidge handle the math” is in any way making it better?????? poor lance is going through so much inferiority complex, what with Allura piloting Blue and Shiro being back and it just NEVER G E T S  R  E  S  O  L  V  E  D?????)

alekah, because once she sets her mind on something she won’t let you down :O also bc she just so happens to be at the top of the hemospectrum so shes stronger than anyone else and less likely to bleed out but those are just perks

okay um if we include EG in this I’M PICKING THAT ONE i wanna be a selkie :V i definitely would rather live in this world than the trolls’ world tho because of all the violence and murder and slavery etc.

not well he keeps getting his horns caught on doorways and he tries to ride on the top of cars for fun and he keeps playing really inappropriate pop songs on full volume while we ride around town to embarrass me. i try but can’t keep him contained. he won’t stop eating the chocolate muffins in our refrigerator.

WELL i will probably never do this but i feel like any of my fantroll works would have to be in a mimic-style comic to homestuck it just wouldn’t feel right to do anything else. 

i’m planning on making EG a novel which would be my DREAM but i’ve thought about making it into a webcomic a couple times. it would be awesome to have a classic 2D-disney style animated movie based on the novel tho!!
