this is also why i prefer gray ghost to amythest ocean btw. the canon interpretation of sam and danny's romantic relationship feels so much like it just comes from this. theyre the main guy and the main girl, ergo they obviously must get together. sam, for all her counter-cultural ways, seems to share this expectation too. shes the main non-related woman in danny's life, ergo he's obviously hers. BIG FAN of toxic relationships dgmw but the way canon seems to just smush them together rubbed me the wrong way right from the start in 2004.

compare to valerie and danny's relationship. we got the enemies to friends to lovers to frienemies dynamic all the way through. their relationship is explored and fleshed out (insomuch as danny phantom ever fleshes anything out), they have to work to negotiate their feelings and be with each other and separate. they're treated more like characters than dolls, with tension and drama and verve, and there's so much complexity in the emotions there. it's, again to my recollection, way less cardboard cut out smashing dolls together Just Because and more... well, just more.

this still pisses me off. they butchered her to have this. they butchered that entire plot thread to have this. Danny Phantom has a lot of 'characterization as the plot demands' right along with 'powers as the plot demands', and that's always irritated me, but this, especially.
