The Fall of the House of Usher (2023) Episode 1

A foreword, of sorts: If someone had told me in high school or even college that I would willingly sit down to watch a horror tv show, I would have laughed in their face. Who knew it would take my college professor Emma's teachings of Pym and my first foray into Critical Theory that I brought with me to law school to get to this point. I haven't even finished watching School Spirits yet so the depression has really taken me for a ride, but my boyfriend says I need a hobby, and I spent two and a half hours and 7 and a half pages of notes on just the first episode of this show, so I'm going to write about it because I miss writing.

If you're here from twitter, may the gods have mercy on your soul.

Now, let's move on to business. My recap of Episode 1 of The Fall of The House of Usher. There will be spoilers for the Poe stories as well as detailed commentary of the events within the episode, so obviously I'm going to put a SPOILER WARNING for whatever you read below. Also, since the first episode introduces the story and the characters, it will probably be long as heck and full of background that no one but me cares about because I'm a huge nerd. I don't care if you skim. Read at your own peril; stay tuned for danger.

Firstly, let's talk about the original short story and see if Wikipedia can help me write a good, short summary of the premise/plot of that story. From within the first two minutes of the show, I can tell that we are going to deviate wildly from the plot.

In the original short story, published in 1839, the tale is told by an unnamed narrator who has been called to the House of Usher at the behest of his childhood friend Roderick Usher who is ill and needs help. Roderick and his twin Madeline are the only living members of the Usher family left alive in their family mansion. One thing that high school teachers everywhere probably tried to teach their students is to pay attention to the narrator's notice of a thin crack that extends from the roof, down the house, and into the nearby lake. This may be important later, but for me right now, I view it as a double entendre. Spoiler alert, at the end of the original short story, both Roderick and Madeline die, leading to the "fall" of the House of Usher, in that the last two living descendants die and therefore end the family name, and also the literal "fall" of the house, the family mansion that they lived in.

I have to admit I watched the first two minutes, tweeted about it, then got so engrossed about halfway through the episode that I grabbed a legal pad and started the episode from the beginning.

Firstly, the opening starts with a countdown to New Year's 1980 before we see a quick image of a cawing raven and a creepy vision of Carla Gugino's smiling face. The episode is titled "A Midnight Dreary," a line from Poe's "The Raven," so at this point I'm confused because obviously this is a completely different short story, but I roll with it. Unfortunately, I didn't have the foresight last night to look ahead and see what the other episode titles were, because then I would have probably understood the plot a little better.

We cut now to a stained glass window in a church (hello Jesus symbolism, can't wait to ponder you later) and then the pastor seems to be giving a eulogy about three dead people. We cut to an older gentleman with a teen girl sitting behind him who seems to be remembering 6 different visions. Side note: I googled the eulogy, and it cobbles together various lines from Poe's poems as well as quotes that are ascribed to Poe. At this point I guess that the older man and older women in sunglasses are the twins, and wonder who the teen girls are behind each of them before seeing MARK MOTHERFUCKING HAMILL on the screen. Even in my notes I just write him down as Mark Hamill, or MH, which is a real shame because his character's name is Arthur Pym, which is the main character from the only "book" Poe ever wrote, and there's a lot of controversy around whether it was finished or not, but I spent several classes in undergrad analyzing that book in particular, so it has a very soft spot in my heart.

Roderick(?) turns back and sees a figure with a blacked out face in the rafters, but then the girl turns around, nobody is there. When she turns to him, she calls him Grampus, so I can assume this girl is his granddaughter and not his daughter. Then Roderick (?) says, "She's here." Not quite to his granddaughter, but mostly to himself. How cryptic. I'm sure we won't think about that until it jumps right into our faces. At this point, in hindsight I had assumed that the "very pale girl" behind Madeline was her granddaughter, but oh how wrong I was.

Outside the church, we see press all over, but the church itself was noticeably empty. Then, then, we cut to a cork board. This confirms Roderick and Madeline are who I thought I was, and also gives Mark Hamill the name of Arthur Pym. Then, I painstakingly went in and paused at nearly every second of the next scene to read the details on the children, their dates of death, and any bits of information I could get from the articles about cause of death (aka COD.) The death dates are clustered very closely together. I don't know quite yet if it goes from youngest to eldest, but I'm sure we shall find out.

Then, the big reveal. Well, to me at least. I saw that the Assistant U.S. Attorney was C. Auguste Dupin, and let me tell you I pumped my fist in the air and nearly woke up my sleeping boyfriend next to me. Why? You don't care but I'm going to tell you. Dupin was introduced in The Murders in the Rue Morgue (1841), my favorite Poe short story, and also the first ever piece of writing ever coined as "detective fiction." Yes, my absolute favorite genre of writing was created by Edgar Allan Poe, so as problematic as he may have been, I will always be grateful to him for this. Besides, the plot for Rue Morgue was so wild, I saw Dupin's name and had to pause and tweet about it. Specifically, I tweeted about hoping that one of the CODs would be strangulation by an escaped monkey. Mind you, like an idiot, I still haven't looked at the damn names of all of the episodes of the series. Since last night, I have been told to keep an eye out, so that's fun.

I can't believe I typed all of that up from the first like, three minutes of the show. I warned you this was going to be long.

Then, we pan out to the corkboard being a whole ass murder board. We love that. Still no clue who Pym is and why he's alive, but the random guy who walked into the office to talk to Dupin just said something about a Pym Reaper, so I got a chuckle out of that. There's emphasis here about "him" wanting to talk. Obviously, by process of elimination, this him is Roderick.

Dupin takes a taxi (oooh, vintage) to this location, and we see it is a dilapidated house. The "House" of Usher, methinks? I will say it definitely gives rise to the gothic vibe of terror and dread, but thankfully we're not going into Gothic architecture, that would have been a little too on the nose. The clothing I've seen is very modern and the death dates are all in November, so I genuinely thought it was set last year but it wasn't. Everything is apparently set to happen next month. In the future. How foreboding.

Roderick invites Dupin in and Dupin attempts to console Roderick for his losses, but Roderick seems much more focused on the drink in his hand. Henri IV Dudognon Heritage Cognac Grande Champagne. I googled it and apparently it is a real drink. I have to say, Roderick really doesn't seem to curry favor with Dupin when he suggests "a single pour is probably worth double your annual salary" but then he offers a glass to Dupin. This man is clearly going through something. By now, I can surmise it is the death of his family, but is this The House of Usher? Is this dilapidated building the same setting that we see in the original tale? Is Dupin now taking the place of the unnamed narrator of past?

Dupin still tries to apologize, but Roderick just seems...resigned to his fate. Also, Dupin asks where Mr. Pym is and we find out that Mark Hamill is playing a defense attorney. Amazing. Three years of law school and a JD later, and Mark Hamill, one of my favorite actors, is playing an attorney with the name of one of my most intriguing literary characters. All of my worlds have collided.

Roderick waives his right to an attorney and sits Dupin down across from him to talk. Dupin says Roderick got away with it, Roderick says no one really ever gets away with anything, not really. Dupin pushes back and says Madeline would beg to differ. Roderick says you can ask yourself, she's downstairs in the basement. At this point, I am convinced that Madeline is dead and buried, but this episode will not reveal that information to me. Trust me, I'm holding onto that theory because it is close in parallel to the original story, but I am soooo open at this point to being surprised because the actor for Roderick has sucked me in completely. Bruce Greenwood. I have painfully powerful facial recognition, so it delights me that I've never seen him in anything before so I can get sucked into his acting completely. Seriously, I just recently recognized the brother in Get Out from a single episode of Victorious because that one episode is my favorite. It can ruin my immersion sometimes.

Anyhow, back to the story. I'm rambling, but I have ADHD and I miss stream of consciousness writing so this is more for me than it is for you.

Roderick's phone vibrates, he says it is his granddaughter, Lenore. My eyeballs are rolling back into my head. We have a connection to The Raven, finally. She's not dead at present, so we shall see if she follows her namesake into the Great Beyond. Dupin tries to graciously allow Roderick to take that call and cites that "grandkids take priority" but Roderick calls him out!

He says "Don't lecture me about family values. You're just as shit in that department as I am."

At this point I am confused but I can't look away. Roderick says he wants to give his confession. Dupin whips out a recorder. November 20th, 2023. Roderick confirms we are in his childhood home. I am vibrating like a cat because I think my theory is correct, and I realize that based off of the death dates of his children, that much of this series will be told from this setting, in those chairs, and with flashbacks to important moments.

I was not prepared for the beginning of this story. In 1953, the house is warmer, more cheerful. R and M are just children, and Roderick speaks about "the woman who would shape every choice we would ever make." Their mother. Eliza. Aptly given the same name as Poe's mother. Personal secretary to the CEO of Fortunato Pharmaceuticals. The same company the Ushers own in modern times. Already I have questions about the lineage of the twins, but you know how it is.

"Not here. Not ever. We agreed." Very cryptic words, Mr. Longfellow. Madeline always hated him, she "always knew." Knew he was a liar? A terrible person? Or did she know he was their father?

Then we get into the religious phrases the mom uses. "Like Jesus, he loves from afar." "He's complicated, like God." I always find it very interesting but also very sad when the words a woman uses to justify a man's abuse is cloaked in a veil of religion. I won't go into detail on that, though. There just isn't time.

Jump to 1962. Nine years later, the twins look to be teenagers. Their studying is interrupted by a bell, and we cut to Eliza ringing a bell in bed. There is a plethora of crosses now hanging on the wall behind her, so that's...lovely. Both twins rush to her, and Eliza pushes a glass of water away. At first I thought it was rabies, but then Eliza seems to be suffering from pain in her pelvic region based off of how her actress was portraying her pain. Honestly, my theory is that she probably had an untreated STI which may have spread to other organs. Either way, her denial of medication or a doctor horrifies me. The screaming and the vitriol is a complete tone shift to who she was prior. But what I really find interesting is that Madeline, not Roderick, seems to be the brains of the pair. She is the one who coaches Roderick on what to say and how to say it to Longfellow, even though Roderick eventually messes up. There seems to be a double entendre in the way Madeline says "it's the least he can do." Because I have suspicions that Madeline knows he is their father, I keep autofilling this in my head. The shift in Mr. Longfellow's mood from humorous, almost mocking disbelief to anger and contemptuous pushback against the twins when Roderick tells him "she loves you" is enough for me. Even Madeline following up with "It's the least you could do. For her. For us." isn't necessary anymore for me to believe he is the father.

Longfellow's denial only seals the deal.

Cut to Eliza's...corpse. She didn't make it, but in trying to keep with her wishes, they tear apart the shed and build her a coffin and bury her in the backyard. Of course, because *spoiler alert* Madeline was accidentally buried alive, I had a hunch Eliza might climb out of her grave. I was proven right, and Eliza wakes up, tries to attack Roderick, but stops when Eliza calls her "Mommy" and grabs her arm. (Actress for teen Madeline is also fantastic, her look of horror was evocative as fuck. 10/10. No notes.) ELiza then walks out, goes into the gates of Longfellow's house and proceeds to choke him to death (with apparently superhuman strength) before finally collapsing next to his body.

What I *love* about this all is that when we cut back to the present, and Dupin asks about why Roderick is telling him all this, Roderick says it is because she's standing right behind Dupin! And you know what drives me nuts? SHE IS. SHE'S TOTALLY THERE AND HE DOESN'T TURN AROUND! Dupin does not see her and we see eliza walk out of the frame.

It is important to note that Roderick talks about the cleanup of that story to spare "his" family, the Usher family, of any embarrassment. He confirms that Longfellow was his father but doesn't claim him as family because Longfellow never claimed him, but it explains why he acknowledges all six of his children from five different mothers.Roderick wouldn't close the gates. Finally, we have confirmation, verbal confirmation from Roderick about who his father was.

Side note: Dupin has a husband, how progressive. I'm down for it. We love it when the elderly LGBTQ+ community is acknowledged.

Two weeks ago:

Then we switch to a trial against Fortunato Pharmaceuticals and the Usher "crime" family, according to Dupin's opening statement. As someone who did pretty damn well in both evidence and criminal law, I'm side-eyeing this opening statement. Let me tell you, law school ruins your ability to suspend disbelief for so many court things in television and movies. Also Fortunato? After The Cask of Amontillado? That's the short story I had to read in high school, and I enjoyed it enough. It does, however, tie in well if the company is also destroyed, locked away, hidden from society, whatever you want to call it to tie into the ending of Cask.

I will say this, Roderick fathered gorgeous children nonstop. Every one of these actors is stunning. I found it odd that the camera panned to Lenore and her mother(?) for a close up when Dupin talks about corruption ut when panned out Lenore is hidden from the view of the audience. At this point, I had not drawn any conclusions as to why that is. I kept fixating on "The Pale Girl," who we later find out is Juno, Roderick's newest wife. Let me tell you, that revelation was crazy because I thought she was Madeline's sole daughter who idolized Dita Von Teese and Dolores Umbridge in the worst hybridization of ways, but Ruth Codd's facial expressions are stunning. I'm visibly uncomfortable when I look at her, and that's fantastic. She's showing me so much with her body language, I can't stand how good she is. Anyhow, I love her. I will be following more of her.

Then, Dupin drops the bomb. The bomb. The thing that makes Madeline's face go from quiet amusement to concern. The statement that makes every Usher child react. There's an informant in the midst. And it is one of them.

Pym, in my opinion, correctly calls out the failure to disclose the identity of this informant. When counsel approaches the bench, this opening statement about the family witness is struck from the record, but it does what Dupin intends it to do. It rattles the whole family. Pym probably makes so much damn money off of these people.

Roderick calls a family dinner for everyone and their spouses. Then we cut to introductions of each family member. Frederick turns out to be the father of Lenore, and his wife's name is Morrie, I think? I had to check Wikipedia for this, but her name is Morella, she's a former actress and model, and now she makes hyper-realistic cakes. Freddie gives me Dan Levy vibes. He blames Perrie, who I assume is Prospero. Lenore calls out that the informant would "have to be pretty brave, I guess" and asks if the charges are true. At this point, there is a massive, MASSIVe red flag waving in my head. Is Lenore the informant? Or is she the red herring? It gets more juicy when she suggests that "if someone really broke the law, shouldn't they be punished?" The red flag...of justice? Morrie casually warns that breaking away from family rank would get you written out of the will, highlighting the difference in values between Lenore and the rest of the family.

Then we cut to Tamerlane and her husband, Bill T. Wilson. (Very cute reference to a short story Poe wrote called William Wilson.) She also says her money on the informant is "one of the bastards." All this does it solidify her and Freddie as the two children Roderick had "in wedlock." Bill suggests the informant is Freddie, and Tamerlane pushes back. She muses that it might be Perry, Bill suggests Juno, her "new stepmom." Tamerlane bristles at this, but also drops that Juno doesn't "know anything." If she really is so new to the family she doesn't know its secrets, then she's the most innocent one there and is also the only one who took the charges against the family seriously enough to not be able to hide it on her face. Tamerlane mentions Goldbug, a short story I have not read, and Tamerlane drops an important tidbit: She doesn't care about the world, she cares about what her dad thinks." I had to google who tf Blippi is for this conversation. Also, they do threesomes? Also, TEST MONKEYS?

Yep. We're going to have the true Rue Morgue murder. We are now introduced to Victorine. And her surgical partner/life partner. They have a successful surgery of some sort on a test monkey. Post-op the women are seen talking about struggling to get peer review because of nightshade. Whatever this nightshade powder Roderick sent over, it's working, but it is the same stuff that paralyzes South American tourists who get it blown in their face. Spooky. Victorine jokes about keeping away from Perry. That boy does not have anyone on his side for this. He's painted as young, immature, and apparently a date rapist so far. However, Victorine points the finger at Camille!

We jump to Leo, apparently on the phone with his boyfriend Julius. He convinces Julius to not come to the family dinner, but he finds out that Julius is on his way up while he's getting head from a woman. So Leo is a bisexual and he's a cheater. Love that about him. Has a black cat named Pluto.

We shift to Camille, apparently the HBIC of the family's PR. She tosses out orders to her drab little assistants hastily scribbling down notes. Her comment about Victorine is not unnoticed, but Camille puts aside her own feelings about her sister in order to push ahead of the PR disaster of the trial. When asked about Juno, Camille has a lot more frustration there for the massive age gap and lack of, idk, decorum about Juno? I'm intrigued as to what "Scraped her off the emergency room floor" means but I'm sure I will find out. Her main priority is sniffing out the informant, she also points to Perry but also claims she doesn't think he's clever enough to talk to the Feds without it ending up on Tiktok. Ouch. Give Perry a damn break. Or don't. He sounds awful. They all certainly seem awful. Like Tamerlane, Camille seems eager to please her father, emphasizing that she wants to be the one who finds the informant to deliver their head to her father.

Juno speaks! and she's Irish. I love that. Apparently she moderated an NA meeting once, so she's either a drug addict or a drug addict seriously affected her family. Tie-in to the Fortunato company? Possible motive? Possible mole? We shall wait and see. I love the comedy Roderick drops in about how the children have to love Juno because the only thing stronger than love is their fear of getting written out of the will.

Then the family doctor arrives with private news on Roderick should hear...My money is either terminal cancer or a slow poisoning. Either way, we don't know what's up before- Surprise! Prospero, aka Perrie shows up.

We see him pour Glenfiddich '96 and I find out he and I are the same age...He pitches a nightclub to Roderick and Madeline who magically shows up and Juno flicks off to Godzilla-knows-where. Apparently he had a full year to come up with a proposal for his first business venture and his idea for a super exclusive nightclub gets shut down mercilessly because the Ushers are about "changing the fucking world." Perrie walks away with his tail between his legs and Madeline checks in with Roderick before heading off to the dining room. She claims when the paperwork is passed out, she'll be able to tell. Apparently she can always tell when someone is...lying? We shall see.

Briefly, we see Carla Gugino put down a drink and say "For the road" which clearly freaks Roderick out because how did this strange woman show up in his mansion's bar?

Cut to dinner, Morrie presents a textbook and Starbucks and we have an Is It Cake momen to light applause from everyone. I can't quite tell if he's being sarcastic about him marrying Morrie, but Freddie moves on to suck up to Roerick by complimenting Juno.

Madeline passes out a new and improved NDA (thank you Pym for your tireless work, I hope you are paid handsomely for this) including details about forfeiture of inheritance, etc regarding being the informant and the consequences that ensue. Victorine's partner Alessandra tries to not sign it until her own lawyer looks it over but one look from the family makes her change her mind.

The siblings bicker before Madeline shuts it down, explains the importance of Fortunato and threatens the informant with certain death. I know it is meant to be serious but I admit I had a little giggle. Then Roderick says "Fifty million dollars." The twins have placed a bounty on the unknown informant's head, effectively pitting the family against each other.

In the present, Roderick laments that this was the last time he saw all of them together, and the last time he saw some of them alive. He claims responsibility for the deaths of all of his children. Even though Dupin claims that these bizarre deaths are all verified to not be linked, Roderick doubles down, and then finally brings up "a woman." Now things are getting juicy. Carla Gugino appears in a variety of lighting and with different hair, so that suggests we'll see here several times throughout the show.

We cut now to New Year's Eve, 1979 heading into 1980. The twins are dressed as Gatbsy and Daisy, I gag a little at the incestual implications even though I knew they were coming, and sit back and watch how the twins first meet the woman, now known as Verna. Apparently they enter a bar hoping for enough people to be around to provide them with an alibi. Whatever they came from at Fortunato Pharmaceuticals, they need witnesses. We see again that Madeline is the mastermind behind every plan. A conversation about resolutions with Verna ensues.

We pan to the present. Dupin talks about some other event that happens that night. Verna predicts their lives will take a complete change of course on that night. Roderick again tells Dupin that every piece of this story is important. We flash back to the funeral. Roderick sees the faceless woman in the back, but then the next time he looks back, he sees the mangled corpses of his six children. When he exits the church, he sees a creepy court jester, like a malevolent joker from the playing card, briefly waiting for him in the car. He starts, notices his nose is bleeding, and then suddenly falls backward. Madeline and Pym rush to him, but arthur stares ahead to *gasp* a raven, and he says "It's time. It's time. It's time." How mysterious.

The episode ends and I finally look ahead to all the episode names like I should have done before. Each episode is based off of a different Poe story, and probably relates to the cause of death for each character. I haven't read some of them, but I feel like I will before I start each next episode. Or I will let myself be surprised. We shall see. Anyhow, I have spent all morning typing this. If you've read this far, I salute you. I'm tired, but also satisfied.

I was in Twitter, which doesn’t happen really often, and I saw this:

At first I thought "Well, half of the replies to the tweets seem to think that a good female character designs is an over-sexualized one, so it’s not surprising that people think Hinata has a good design…"

But then I realized that the problem of Hinata’s design wasn’t just the fact that she was over-sexualized in the anime and official arts. The problem of her design is that it’s BLAND.

Let’s take a look at her Genin design first:

To be honest, her Genin design is okay. The pompons on her jacket accentuated her soft and childish side, it’s a nice touch to her outfit. Her hair looks good and it’s pretty original to not gave her a more "girly" hairstyle.

But SP decided to gave her a more conventionally attractive and feminine face, and to sexualize her even though she’s 12.

After the time’s skip…

Her design isn’t extraordinary. Hinata’s outfit doesn’t have pompons on her jacket anymore, which seems logical since she grew up. But her outfit is now pretty bland, it just looks like a regular sport outfit. Her haircut is really classical and doesn’t have anything special to it except the two bangs that shape Hinata’s face.

Nothing interesting to say except that Hinata’s design is generic and kinda boring.

The Last design:

With time, Hinata’s design just get more and more generic. Her round face was changed for a pointy chin, and she even completely lose her bangs in her design for The Last. We can’t really tell if she’s a ninja or not, since she doesn’t have her hitai-ate anymore, and that her outfit doesn’t look very… practical for fighting.

The worst part about her design is that it’s OOC. A comment that Kishi made in the first Databook makes us know that Hinata isn’t interested in fashion, and that she was apparently not the type to wear clothes that reveal her skin.

(Kishi even tells us that she looks bland)

But making Hinata’s clothes shorter to make her more appealing to the audience is more important than the coherence of the story I guess… The black socks she wears are similar to the ones that girls in hentai wear, but in the design Kishimoto had previously drawn of Hinata, we can see Hinata was wearing the usual fishnet socks that shinobi wear (and she still has the shape of her bangs)

At first I thought that SP decided to replace the fishnet socks by the black socks because it was easier to animate, or just because they wanted to change of art style to distance themselves from the original anime. But then I noticed that Tenten was wearing fishnet socks on her The Last design… So there’s not other explanation for this change except the fact that it makes Hinata looks even more hentai-related. Great.

And finally, the Boruto Design:

Hinata’s design in chapter 700th was… decent. Her outfit look like an "adult" outfit, and I think her tied up hair looks pretty good. Her design is still bland and forgettable, but it’s fine. But for some reasons, her design was changed for the Boruto movie:

Kishimoto designed it, so there must be a reason for the changes. So, Hinata now has shorter hair and shorter clothes. And frankly, it looks like she’s wearing the clothes she wore when she was a genin, even the pompons are back. Not only does the color palet makes it hard to look at Hinata without laughing, the shape of the outfits is also pretty weird.

I don’t know if Kishi redesigned Hinata to make her more childish in order to show us that her wedding with Naruto only accentuate the fact that she’s still a little girl in love, but if it’s the case… well played I guess??

hiiii gosh and look you even put the link on for me to make it easy! The question itself is NOT EASY though I was like BUT WHAT IF I FORGET ONE?? Like what CATEGORY of favorite?! But the timing couldn't be better, I am currently as previously mentioned in the process of moving all of my stuff around, a huge project that 1) is perfect for listening to records while I do things like move books from one shelf to another and 2) means I just today moved my record player to a far better place where I am actually using it again for the first time in ages (for one thing onto an actual properly non wobbly surface) so I listened to records today and picked a few that will do sorry to all the others I forgot and love even more I'm sure

I picked first up Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth not just because it's so good (IT IS THOUGH) but also because it's an album that having it on vinyl feels SO right and it makes me happy just to handle; the pretty Gerhard Richter painting cover, a little crackle and pop with the music, the aesthetic of it all! I mean Sonic Youth probably literally birthed the indie hipster luddite aesthetic, it seems Right™ Second is The Bonny by Gerry Cinnamon, because being able to listen to the songs The Bonny and Ghost specifically on vinyl feeds my soul in deep and important ways. Also the 4th side is blank and etched with lyrics, like the JHO single, very cool. And last the record/album I've almost certainly played the most times in my life, even though the copy I have has skips now (to be loved is to changed and all that yk) and I haven't to date been able to bring myself to buy a reissue or pay $$$ for another original: 24 Hour Revenge Therapy by Jawbreaker. It's just important in like 15 different ways okay? Tip, if anyone is like huh! I will go listen to this album I've never heard it (DO!! also then tweet it at Louis a lot, he would REALLY LIKE IT) I think the best way to do this is to skip the first song the first time, it's a whole different vibe than the rest. Also right now my fave is LTLIVE on vinyl 😭 playing records makes me want to put it on SO BAD :((( also bonus content, one of my favorite things about records for some reason is seeing who goes next to who idk I just find it fun and if I were naming a band it would totally be a big consideration... so for extra tour of the shelf, Gerry Cinnamon is between the Germs and The Gits (listen the Cs are crowded, it's my shelf I can do what I want), Sonic Youth was between The Snuts and Social Distortion- which the astute may notice is not correct, she will be going back other side of Social D- and Jawbreaker nestle cozily between Japandroids and Jerk With A Bomb. Louis, for the record, lives between very twee girl band Tiger Trap and very fast hardcore band Tragatello, lol. A weird bill, that, but they do have one thing in common- all feature queer musicians

#gosh all three of these are so MELLOW🤔#I think even though I also like a lot of very not chill music there's something about the vibe+vinyl for me #I am listenign to the tragatello record now though which is anything but and that's also a great time so hey okay #this is outrageously self indulgent forgive me innocent dash denizens who just want to talk about louis in peace #it's cam's fault for being an enabler!

Fan Expo Denver

IF YOU READ ANNIVERSARY FIRST, THIS HAPPENS BEFORE THAT CHAPTER, I HAD TO WRITE THAT ONE FIRST BECAUSE OF THE SCHEDULE

A/N: originally, this was going to be about the flashback weekend chicago, but after seeing the q&a from the fan expo in Denver i decided to change it

After leaving the set of Riverdale when the filming wrapped and the wrap party (and the production also gave you and Jack some gifts), both of you returned to LA to rest a little before going to the Fan Expo in Denver

"Tornado, hurry up!", Skeet exclaimed from the first floor, "We still need to go get Jack"

"I'm almost done!", you responded putting a few last things in your travel bag, "At least my suitcase and Tatum's carrier is already there"

"Just hurry up, our flight is at 1 pm"

"Chill dad, I was just making sure that I didn't forget anything", you said starting to get downstairs with your bag and Tatum in your arms, "I'm ready"

"Great, let's get the things to the car"

Taking the suitcases and the bags, both of you along with Tatum still in your arms went to the car parked on the entrance of the house to put the suitcases and carrier on the truck and leave towards the Champion house

"I texted your siblings to come and take care of the garden the day that they can", Skeet said the moment the car started the way

"Okay", you nodded, "And I already texted Jack to say we are on our way"

"And I need you to sleep during the flight"

"What? Why?"

"Because you spent the entire night awake watching TV"

"I was watching Shadow and Bone, and it was incredible"

"And now you have baggy eyes that I can see with all the concealer you put on, how many chapters did you watch?"

"Like half or more of the first season"

"Enough reason to you to sleep during the entire flight, and when we arrive to the hotel I'll take away your iPad during the night so you can sleep properly, understood?"

"Yes, dad", you nodded, "But, hey, at least this time was because of a series instead of hate tweets"

"That's the only good part, but you shouldn't be staying up so late, specially when we are flying, what's the series about?"

"I'm glad you asked!"

For the rest of the road, you spend it explaining everything about the series while Tatum decided to take a little nap in your lap until the car stopped in front of the Champion house where both of you and Tatum in your arms got out of the car to walk to the entrance

"Hi angel, hi Skeet", Anna greeted the moment she openned the door, "Come in, Jack is still finishing packing, he must come down in a moment"

"Can I go help him?", you asked

"Yeah, sure", Anna nodded

"Don't take too long, our flight is at 1", Skeet said

"Okay", you exclaimed already halfway of the stairs

Reaching the second floor, you with Tatum in your arms walked to the door were you knew his room was, noticing the door was open, you leaned into the entrance

"Good morning my love", you sang getting his attention, which made him turn to look at you from his bed where he was finishing his backpack, "You're ready for the convention?"

"Good morning", Jack smiled sharing a kiss with you the moment you entered the room, "Almost, I'm just making sure I don't forget anything"

"Need some help?", you asked siting in his bed letting Tatum walk on the soft surface

"Do you think I over-packed?", Jack asked you, which caused you to open his suitcase, "I feel like I put a lot of clothes only for a weekend"

"Just like what I've told you many times, it's not over-packing, it's having options just in case the outfit you pictured in your head doesn't come out as you imagined it"

"You're right", Jack nodded closing his suitcase along with his backpack, "Are you bringing Tatum's carrier?"

"Yeah, it's on the car"

"Can Butters and Tatum share it? I'm just thinking about the space, the flight and all that"

"Of course! They are going to have fun in there"

"Kids, I'll leave without you if you don't come down in the next five minutes!", Skeet exclaimed from the first floor

Gattering the things and the cats quickly, both of you went down stairs to say goodbye and go to the airport

After two hours in the airport and almost five on the plane (in which you slept almost all the time), the three of you and the cats arrived in Denver when it took an hour to arrive to the hotel, which was close to the convention center

"We're going to settle in our rooms and then we are going to have a small reunion to check the schedule for the weekend", Skeet said while the elevator went up to the right floor, "And we're also getting dinner later with the rest"

"I can't wait to bother uncle Matthew until he unblock me from insta", you joked once the elevator doors openned

"Still?", Skeet asked in shock

"Yeah, I even texted Macey and Addison to help me, but they said he doesn't regret it"

"Why did he block you again?", Skeet asked while openning the room door

"She asked him if Stu's alive", Jack laughed

"It was a joke", you exclaimed while entering the room noticing there was only one bed, "Dad, we aren't sleeping the three of us in the same bed, it's going to be weird"

"The door at the left is your room", Skeet said walking towards that door next to the TV and dresser to reveal a room exactly the same, "I couldn't get a suite with two rooms and this was the closest thing we got, go on to organize your things, we have to be on the meeting room in forty minutes"

Entering you room and leaving the suitcases and bags on the bench next to the desk and the cat carrier on the couch next to the window letting them out to explore the room, you and Jack started to got some things out of your travel bags to the bathroom and baby dragon Jake on the bed

When the hour to go to the meeting room arrived, the three of you and the cats went to the last floor to the meeting room

"Aunt Neve! Aunt Rose!", you exclaimed running towards them the moment you saw them near a table

When they heard your voice and turned in your direction, Neve and Rose inmediatly openned their arms to hug you the moment you arrived

"I swear that every time we see you, you are taller", Neve said when the hug ended

"Not only taller, she also got a tattoo", Rose added looking at your left hand

"It's the sneakers, they have a little platform", you shrugged adjusting Tatum in your arms

"I'm going to asume this little friend is Tatum", Rose said looking at the orange cat seeing everything with curiosity, "She has almost the same hair color I had in the movie"

"I know", you smiled, "Want to hold her?"

"Of course", Neve smiled taking the cat in her arms

After saying hi to the rest and introducing Jack to the ones who didn't knew him in person yet, all of you sat at the tables while someone from the expo arrived

"Goodnight to everyone, it's good to see you", the person greeted everyone, "Okay, the day starts tomorrow as soon at you arrive with the autographs and then with the photo ops, we start with Henry Winkler at 7.40 pm who's arriving early tomorrow, then Rose at 8.00, Jamie and Skeet at 8.10, a team up of Skeet and Matthew at 8.20 and Matthew at 8.30"

"On saturday we have more photo ops starting with Skeet at 3.30, Neve at 3.40, a team up again of Skeet and Matthew at the same hour, a team up of Neve, Jamie, Skeet and Matthew at 4.10, Rose at 4.40, a team up with everyone at 4.50, individual ones of Henry, Jamie and Matthew at 5.10"

"On sunday we have the photo op with everyone at 11.10, Rose at 11.20, a team up with Neve, Jamie, Skeet and Matthew at the same hour, Jamie at 11.50, a team up with Skeet and Matthew at 11.50, Skeet at 12.20, the panel with Neve, Jamie, Skeet and Matthew with surprise aparitions of Y/N and Jack at 12.45, Matthew and Neve had individual photo ops at 1.50, and that's the end of the event, by the way, there's an Avatar cosplay meet up at 2.30, Jack, would you like to attend?"

"Sure, sounds good", Jack nodded

"Perfect, the schedules were already sent to you to your emails, any questions?"

"Can we bring our cats to the panel?", you asked raising your hand

"Of course, we are pet-friendly"

Hearing that, you and Jack high-fived while the adults looked at both of you with fun

After two days of being locked in the hotel to not ruin the surprise appearence, you and Jack finally got to get out to the hotel to go to the convention

Doing a reference to the franchise you decided to wear a white short-sleeve top, high waisted jeans and black run star hike converse, with a small silver backpack were you had yours and Jack things, with some cat treats and toys; while Jack used a black tank t-shirt with an open black and red short sleeve button up, his worn out jeans and checkerboard vans

When the time to go to the convention center arrived, you and Jack stayed backstage until the time to the panel arrived

"How are you feeling?", you asked while having breakfast from one of the food stations on the convention, "About going there with the OG's and answering questions"

"Good, a bit nervous", Jack admited

"This things are usually easy and funny, like they ask the funniest question ever and then you got the most serious and emotional question, like a live interview, actually this is my first time going on stage, I usually was sitting on othe first line or something like that"

"They are going to be surprised when we apeare there"

"Totally, we should prepare something to say when we apeare"

Continuing to have breakfast and planning what to say, the time to start going to the hall arrived, joining the adults to go there

"Hey, I saw the trailer of your new movie", Neve said to Jack refering to Retribution, "It looks awesome"

"Thanks", Jack smiled, "I really appreciate it"

"Where was it filmed?", Jamie asked, "The locations looks cool"

"Berlin, I filmed it right after Avatar"

"Spends four years running around and then he gets to sit in a car the entire new movie", Matthew joked

"Give my boy a rest", Skeet spoke

"Yeah, he needed to rest for the killing spree", you said

Keeping with the chatting and small jokes, the way continued until you reached the behind the stage, when the sound of a lot of fans behind the curtains could be heard

"Okay, kids, both of you look good as well as Butters and Tatum", Skeet sighed before entering the stage, "Rose and Henry are going to appeare for a few seconds so you have to enter before them, understood?"

"Yes", both of you nodded

"Perfect, see you in a few seconds"

"Please welcome to the stage first, give it up for Jamie Kennedy! Keep that applause going as we welcome to the stage Skeet Ulrich! Alright next up Fan Expo Denver please welcome Matthew Lillard! And last but certainly not least please welcome Sidney Prescott herself, Neve Campbell!", the lead of pannel said while the four adults entered the stage and took seats in the couches, "Wow, Matthew, brought a professional camera on stage, very nice! Thank you all for being here, give it up one more time for them Fan Expo Denver"

Hearing softer applauses, both of you decided to get close to the curtain next to the stage

"We've got a lot of questions in the audience, we wanna get to them as soon as possible because that's what this is about, it's about the fans asking their questions", the lead continued, "But I just wanted to keep things off, 1996 was an amazing year for film in general, we had films like Twister, Mission Impossible, The Robbery, you might have heard of another film called The Craft that came out that year everybody, with Skeet and Neve with the reimagining of the horror franchise with everyone's favorite Scream film, there's six films and the fans are still ravenous for this franchise, I'd just love to kick things off before we go to the fans and talk go down the line and just talk a little bit of what it means to be a part of this and what it feels like to have the fans come and tell you how important this horror franchise was"

Deciding to enter right before the conversations start, both of you came out of the curtain to stand in front of the stairs

"Excuse me, is this econ?", Jack asked refering to the alibi of his character

"Best known as Ghostface 101", you added

"Everyone, please welcome Jack Champion and Y/N Ulrich!", the lead exclaimed, "They are going to be with us during the panel so you can ask them questions too"

Entering the stage between the applauses of the people, both of you stopped in the middle of the stage to held Butters and Tatum like in The Lion King, before turning and sat on the couch between Neve and Skeet taking the two left microphones

"Guys, we're so happy you're here, I'm going to go with you in a few moments, but before I want to hear everyone responses to the question", the lead said, "Jamie, we start with you"

"It's incredible", Jamie started, "I think we hit lightning in a bottle when we did the movie, we were this little movie, we just thought 'well, maybe we can do good in video' and so much to say but it is incredible and was just hit lightning in a bottle, and here we are 27 years later, it's incredible"

"It's kinda of certainly in the moment none of us could process that this would ever exist, that people would still involved, you know, into this series", Skeet continued, "We're just a bunch of kids we've got together to do what we love to do and I think that's the power of finding what it is your love to do and you never know what will happen with it, certainly I could never predict this so thank you all, thank you each and everyone"

"Oh my gosh, everyone behind the curtain is Rose McGowan", the lead exclaimed while Rose took a seat in the empty couch, "Rose thank you for joining us, Rose has a solo pannel later at 2 pm so definitely check that out, but thank you for joining us on stage"

"Hi everybody", Rose greeted, "Scream forever, literally this is amazing, I just wanted to come and say that Tatum lives and I love you all the fabulous, beautiful panel"

Finalizing that, Rose left the panel with everyone smiling for the cameo

"Let's not forget that Rose will be at her table all day, and also is doing solo panel so for you all Rose McGowan fans, and those Chramed fans out there in the building check it out at 2 pm right over the next door, Matt, talk about the legacy and what this franchise means to you"

Pretending to not know what to say, Matthew stayed quiet with a panic face making everyone laugh before answering the question

"First of all is very humbling that so many people showed up today, I think we are all sort of amazed and honored, we were making a horror movie with Wes Craven who hadn't made a good horror movie in a long time, God bless his soul we love him, but in the moment it was nothing special, it's not until now that you recognize that you were in the middle of something, so for us it was just one of the greatest times we've ever had working and the results are baffling to us in a way cause every single time we get these opportunities to interact it is humbling, so we are grateful you guys, thank you"

"Oh my gosh, it's principal Himbry everybody, it's Henry Winkler", the lead exclaimed at the same time Henry entered the stage causing everyone to stand up to give him a standing ovation before sitting again, "Oh my gosh, all this surprises that we didn't planned ahead of time"

"I only have two things to say", Henry spoke, "28 years ago I had lunch, sushi lunch, with Wes Craven who wore tweed and you would think you were talking to an english professor and he said 'I have this small part in my movie, would you do this' I said of course, and then turned out to be this incredible sociological event, and I wanted to say I have not seen these people for 27 years, except of course the young ones, we saw each other at another Comic-Con at it was like we've been together forever, they are everything you imagine they are, and that is just the truth, there is no hyperbole in that, and the second thing is I was there and then I was told they're not gonna put my name on the movie because I made the funds and he was going to throw the balance of the horror off, so I went 'okay' and we're not going to be on the one sheet, we will not be in the commercial poster, I won't be there either and I went 'okay' and then they previewed the movie and my character walked on screen and I got applause, and the same people who said 'go home', said 'excuse me, would you do press for the movie', and never know in our business have the greatest summer, be careful and take care of each other, and I'm so proud to be a member of your family"

The moment Henry finnished his speech, Matthew was quick to stand up and hug him followed by the rest of you to applaude him, being the next people to hug, even if he didn't know you and Jack to well

"I don't like sitting on the stage, I'm going to walk around", Matthew said taking him camera, "I'm really don't like it"

"Can we hear from Neve really quick?", the lead spoke, "You know, you're arguably the best final girl of all time, one of those characters, what it does make you feel? And Matt I'm going to let you take it away with the audience questions"

"I thought you were actually talking to Matt when you said that", Neve joked causing everyone to laugh, "I'm sorry, Henry is such a joy, I mean he's just the most magical, these movies changed my life, made my life, changed my life, you know as these guys said, we had no idea, there was no way to have an idea, you would never, how often does this happen that you get to make this many movies and have it be successful and more importantly loved, you know, I can't believe I'm sitting in front of you guys, I feel like every time we have an audience like this and whenever I see this guys and whenever anyone comes up and tells me that Sidney save them or that these movies help them in some way it's just tremendous, there's no way to really fathom the reach that it's had, and I'm so so so grateful and so grateful to you all"

"Jack, Y/N, anything to say?"

Sharing a look, Jack encouraged you to spoke first

"I've been in love with this franchise since the moment my siblings put the mask on me and later when I saw them at eight years old, even my cat is named after one character, and seeing it to keep growing and having more fans because these are classics is something amazing, like I had classmates that aproached to me saying things like 'I saw Scream the other day, can you tell your dad he was scary' was something that made me realize these movies are going to be forever, so seeing fans all over the world no matter the age is amazing"

"Yeah, this movies are athemporal, like you can see them at any year and don't think that they're old or something like that, because they have iconic characters, scenes, moments and more, you can see people of all ages talking about them, and honestly when I was younger and saw them I've never think I would be able to be a part of something this big but I'm grateful to play one of the recent ghostfaces and meeting incredible people"

"Let's give it up for the cast of Scream everybody", the lead continued causing the public to cheer, "Alright, let's go with the audience questions"

"There's a line, so why don't you do the first question?", Matthew said to someone in the audience from where he was standing next to them

"Um, do you guys have advice for young people who are trying to be in the world of acting?"

"A million things to say", Skeet responded, "Several things and I'm sure everybody could add more to it but um never quit, never quit living your dream, never quit believing in yourself, never let Hollywood be the standard for success in your mind, finding what you love to do is the success, so congratulate yourself and that and then continue to grow as a person and as an artist and express yourself, don't follow anybody else, be you and I guarantee you that you will find success in more ways that you can imagine"

"My name is Silah, and I've seen every single Scream movie", a kid started to say

"That's a baby", you exclaimed with cuteness

"It has the same age as Trinity when we started filming Avatar", Jack added without the microphone, "Maybe younger"

"Where are your parents?", Matthew asked making everyone laugh, "Child Protective Services, that child is like five"

"So, I'd like to know what's your favorite scary movie"

"I love the movie called The Changeling with George C. Scott", Neve responded

"How old are you Silah?", Jamie said

"Eleven, I know I'm short"

"Listen, there's these movies out there called Barney", Jamie joked, "Silah, I'm just going to say Showgirls, absolutely I am, don't watch that!"

"I love 'The Exorcism of Emily Rose', 'Hereditary'", Skeet said

"REC is one of my favorites", you responded, "Pearl, Jennifer's Body, Carrie, Don't Breathe"

"I'm going to go with 'The Shinning'", Jack spoke

"Matthew, do you have a favorite horror movie?"", the lead said noticing Matthew returned to the stage

"I came back to the stage because there's so many people, I usually like roaming around and trying to touch you and... I want to come back to the stage, my favorite horror movie is Scream, Silah, you did a great job asking that question", Matthew said, "To the young person that just said what do you do as an actor, can I just chime in on that? So here's what I'm going to say, wherever you are, here's the deal, there's a lot of people on this room and some people are outside the norm that don't like sort of fit in the middle of high school and don't walk the way other people walk through life, and so some of those people are actors, and artists, and singers, and dancers, and I don't know, whatever you do that's not normal those people that don't play football, the most important thing is you find your people and do your shit, that's the right way, do not ever rule it by success, just follow a passion, I don't give a shit what it is, go do your thing and you will find your way to Hollywood or wherever is going to be but find what you love to do and fly that flag, periodt, and there's to many people so I'm going to sit back in here"

"Hi guys, I'm Adam and I'm a big fan, so you guys are arguably a part of one of the biggest casts for any horror movie ever and obviously the films that have followed kind of a similar formula of following just commentary on horror movies as a whole, but in the first and sixth movie I was wondering if you guys, spoiler alert if any of you haven't seen this movies why are you here, but did you guys know that Billy Loomis, Stu Macher and Ethan Landry were going to be the killers going in or was kept in the dark for you guys as well?"

"I knew", Neve responded making everyone laugh because of the way she said it, "I didn't know, but I think some cast were kept in the dark"

"Yeah, we knew", Skeet nodded

"It is always in the dark", Matthew joked

"I love Being and I Know What You Did Last Summer", Jamie sais answering the previous question, "Um no, we knew in the first one that they were and I'll let these guys answer but the second one is where we didn't get a lot of details"

"That's right", Neve nodded

"I knew my character was going to be ghostface when suddenly Liana, who plays Quinn, and I got a new wardrobe test programmed, they show us the robes and the masks with our scripts for the final act, and I got to use the costume for the appartment attack", Jack responded

"Hi I'm Jake, and speaking of the second movie my question is pretty much for anyone, but with the second movie production was incredible quick, several script re-writes, was there ever a moment where you doubted Wes Craven or Kevin Williamson during those moments?"

"Never", Jamie said mostly looking at Neve while talking, "The script came on and the next thing we know, we were making a sub-movie called Stab and in Stab, Luke Wilson is like 'I'm going to play Skeet', and Heather Graham was in it, and it was like we had a cast within a cast within a cast and it was incredible, and like, the moment they green light, you're on the cover of Rolling Stone, remember?"

"Yeah, that was a great timing", Neve laughed

"Yeah, you guys were dead and you two weren't born at the time", Jamie joked

"Next question", Matthew said, "What's your problem, bro?"

"Shout out to Wes Craven obviously, the filmmaking genius, but shout out to Kevin Williamson the writer", the lead commented, "The movie feels fresh, you know"

"They were both incredible, you know, clever and sure, these films are complicated to get right and that doesn't mean that there wasn't doubt within them of like, you know, having to question and go over things and do rewrites and stuff, but we didn't, I certainly didn't doubt that they wouldn't, that they would get it, you know, what I mean it's just a process especially when it's a who done it, yeah it takes a minute"

"Hi, my name is Gabby, and my question is for Y/N, I know you're a swiftie, I am too, so my question is, which Taylor Swift songs would you relate to Scream?"

"That's an amazing question, Gabby, excellent music taste", you exclaimed adjusting Tatum in your lap, "Welcome to NY for this recent movie because is set there, Bad Blood for the betrayals, Vigilante Shit for the ghostfaces focusing on the line 'I don't dress for women, I don't dress for men, lately I've been dressing for revenge', No Body No Crime for when they are pointing the suspects for the phrase 'I think he did it, but I just can't prove it', I Did Something Bad for Sam, Mastermind for the ghostfaces and their plans, The Great War for Sidney, Gale, Sam, Tara and the rest of the survivors, I Knew You Were Trouble for Sidney and Billy's relationship, I think that's it, and I can't wait for Reputation Taylor's Version to be released"

"And I also wanted to give you a gift", Gabby added

"You're so sweet, I'll go with you"

Leaving Tatum in Neve arms and your microphone in your spot in the couch, you went down the small stairs to sprint towards her and share a hug, before breaking it

"I hope you like it", Gabby said giving you the gift bag

"Thank you so much", you smiled taking it in your hands, "I'm sure I will"

Returning to the stage with the gift bag, you took sit again in your spot between Neve and Jack leaving it on the floor next to you, taking Tatum in your arms again and the mic

"Open it! Open it!", Matthew started to chant followed by everyone in the room

Laughing, you picked the gift back again letting Tatum walk towards Jack and Butters to openned it, seeing first something that felt like a throw blanket in black

"It's a blanket", you said getting the blanket out of the bag to start to unfold it noticing a bundle of curly chesnut hair and a forehead which you knew perfectly, "Is this what I think it is?"

"What is it? We want to see", Jamie said

Unfolding it completely, your suspitions were correct when the photo of Jack in his Stabathon shirt was revealed as the design of the blanket

"No way!", Jack laughed covering his face with his hands

"This is amazing", you laughed letting everyone in the panel see the blanket, "I'm going to sleep in this for the rest of my lfe"

"Can I ask what was the reaction of the store when you ordered this?", Skeet asked the girl who gave you the gift

"I don't know, I ordered it online"

"You can order these things online?", Matthew asked

"You'd be surprised for all the things you can order there", Neve joked

"I feel like I hurt myself", Neve joked, "It was never other people, it was my enthusiasm, I think sometimes I would be a bit too much go-getter and I could've held back on a few things but nothing terrible"

"The scene between obviously Billy and Stu, that iconic final scene, one of the best scenes in horror movie history, am I right?", the lead added, "Where we're seeing them reveal themselves as the killers, there's a lot of stabbing going back and forth, the shooting, any sort of alterarions there"

"I know what Matt's gonna say", Skeet spoke, "The phone really hurt, you know, really hurt to be hit by the phone"

"That was totally not cool", Matthew said, "Yeah, it's funny, that whole scene I think is a testament to obviously Wes and to Kevin but I want to say that the, like, we were again young kids hurling energy at 18 pages of dialogue or 20 pages of dialogue and they were night when we would shoot, you know six pm to six in the morning enery single night for like three weeks and at some point when you're in that kind of energy for that long you start to loose your mind a little so there are moments in that thing where I had these distinct memories of the three of us sitting in like the living room against the wall and this is before cellphones just so we're clear, that's how old this movie is"

"They actually talk to each other", Neve joked

"That's super weird everyone", Matthew continued, "But all three of us had blood in our bodies and literally we would all sit there and just sticky, your fingers would be like sticking with the stickiness and I'd look at Neve and be like 'look' and then do the same to Skeet and that's a true story and, that's so really what got hurt was our minds"

"I'm Kennedy, so I love it-"

"Great name", Jamie interrupted

"So I love horror movies and the Scream franchise but how I got into horror movies or scary stuff was Scooby-Doo and so, so it was a big impact in my life and I was wondering, for Matthew, what was it like being on the set for Scooby-Doo like for the live action, because that was a big for me when I was younger"

"First of all thank you for your question, um, so that was a very difficult journey because you're taking a two-dimensional character that everyone knows, that I grew up with and trying to make it into a three-dimensional real person and your best friend in the movie isn't there ever, he's never there, he never shows up, but I was lucky that there was a man in Australia who is the off-camera voice who is Neil Fanning, thank Good, who is the off-camera voice and he was with me the first and second movie and that movie for me, for a long time hung on me like this I was kind of embarrased about the film, the first one was great, the second one was like ah, and I didn't work-"

"The second one is the one I always watch", Kennedy interrupted causing everyone to laugh, "I wasn't a fan of the first one"

"Fair enough, fair enough", Matthew laughed, "The best part about that movie and the franchise is that the legacy of that part for me has given me purposes my career goes on as I'm waning and getting older and my time in this industry is coming relatively to an end there's-oh stop, I'm gonna die, it's gonna happen, I'm just hope I make like CNN, that's all I want, 'today that guy from that thing died'- but listen, the great thing about that for me is that this moment right here is so validating for my entire life, is that you get to hold space for a character that means something to other people, the same thing that Neve just said is that we cherish doing something that resonates with people, I have lots of movies that are really terrible that nobody gives a shit about it, but to have one that you come up and mention today is literally profoundly, gratifying in my life so thank you"

"Skeet, we're seeing this younger generation now being introduced to the films of Scream, literally in the movies we're getting the next generation, we got Jack here who is part of them, you got to return to it, what is it like seeing like the new generation and actually being part of that storytelling in the newer films", the lead asked

"First of all it's an honor to be asked to be a small part of it, to be any part of it, you know, I feel like the group that took over, Wes would be really proud and I'm sure Neve could speak to that more having to spent more time with theme on set more than I did in five"

"We were only there for one day", you commented

"Exactly, for this last one we've got to stay the entire filming", Skeet nodded, "But I feel like they were really focused on honoring Wes and the franchise as a whole and I think they did a great job and I think they brought it, there's an excitement you know, when I watched it for the first time, it's relevant and it's now and yet it's still harkens back to what the story is and what the legacy of the story is, I think they picked a great group of people to tell it, it's wild because Mason Gooding I worked with his dad Cuba Gooding a couple times so it's wild to you know be that old, my boy Jack right here was a great character and put a lot of heart in his interpretation, I think the franchise is in great hands and you know, I was very honored to be a part of it, even my youngest Y/N is now part of it, however little that was it was fun, I mean unfortunately we didn't get a lot of time on set and COVID was when we were shooting the fifth one so we didn't get to like wasn't, I got to work with Melissa and that was kind of it, and the sixth there was no one with me on set, not because of COVID it was just the green screen and all that stuff you know I was alone with it, but again, just honored to be asked to be a part of it"

"Y/N, you mentioned before that you grew up with the movies and know you are part of them, you had a cameo on this last movie, can you told us how did you end up in there"

"Yeah, I did my cinematographic cameo debut in this movie, and for those who haven't noticed me, I'm in the Halloween party at the start using a FP Jones costume, so the talks about me doing a cameo started during the filming of the fifth, I think Radio Silence saw my enthusiasm for being in the set and heard me and Melissa talking about the films and that, and also dad mentioned it that I saw the movies at a young age, so before we left the set they mentioned it and I inmediatly said yes of course, but because I was a minor at the time mom and dad had to give their permition, and when the time to film aproached, they send us our contracts and that, and later we flew to Montreal to film, but they didn't told me what my cameo will be until two or three days before filming, and I feel like my father right here needs to tell this next part of the story"

"I already know what her cameo will be because they send me an email a week before filming so the morning before our flight I entered her room while she was sleeping, went to her closet, got the serpents jacket and put it on my suitcase and she didn't know I took it until that moment"

"So, long story short, they get me on costume and make up, went to set, got a date, film my part and never returned to set to avoid being spoiled of everything"

Finishing your storytime, everyone was laughing because how you tell everything, before continuing with the next question

"Hi, I'm Lily, first of all, it's awesome to be able to talk to literal legends"

"Where are they?", Skeet joked, "Henry left"

"And also, Neve you're like my literal hero so it's nice to see you in person like this is blowing my mind right now, and then my question for all of you is what was your favorite scene or line from the movies that you did?"

"You know, it wasn't necessary, I mean for me one that I think and it's probably the one I guess get asked to sign the most but to me has seems to have the most relevant psychologically in my life and probably a lot of people's lives and is 'we all go a little mad sometimes' because we do, we do and I think you got to allow that in yourself, but that one for me"

"I don't now", Neve laughed, "I've done a lot of these"

"What's your favorite of all of theme?", Matthew asked

"My favorite line of all of them? I'm Sidney fucking Prescott, of course I have a gun"

"I like, we improv stuff in that last piece that I like so I think the one 'my mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me', you're laughing at the end of an horrific movie, so that was mine"

"I had fun saying all the dialogues of Ethan before and after reveal, but the one I like the most is 'it's not enough to just kill someone these days, you have to assassinate their character first'"

"You know, I don't say anything at all during my less than five minutes on screen so I'm just going to say a phrase of this last one that I think about everyday", you said, "Who gives a fuck about movies"

"That's a lot because we have so ones we like, I probably think mine was 'I was never so happy to be a virgin', well that rule being said it's weird because I died in the second movie tragically and I don't remember getting any sex, so something went on I don't know where, I don't know, you know what, what's amazing about you guys is that you guys teach me and all of us do stuff that we don't even remember about the films so somebody said when I was talking on the phone or with David there was a fourth rule in Scream 2 and I don't know what it is and somebody came up to me the last convention and said 'the fourth rule is never kill the voice of the audience' and I was so touched, anyways, sorry guys I'm avaliable for birthday parties"

"Hi, my name is Kyla and I have a question for Matthew, well two questions, did Skeet ever apologize to you and why did you block Y/N on instagram?"

"I'm so glad you asked that question", Matthew smiled

"I gotta go to the bathroom", Skeet joked

"I just want to say thank you so much, no, you know what you never did and I'll let her explained why I block her", Matthew said turning to give his back to you

"Uncle Matthew, I'm sorry for asking if Stu was alive, it was a joke that you didn't took well, can you forgive me?"

"I forgive you, because at least you didn't hit me with a phone, I'll unblock you after we finish this panel"

"Matt, I know it's been a while", while Skeet was talking, Matthew decided to stand up an walk a few steps far, which made Skeet do the same to get closer to him, "Matt no"

"I'm getting colder"

Finally standing by his side and thanks to Matthew having his hand streched out behind him to stop him for getting closer, Skeet took his arm, while everyone was dying of laughing

"I just would like to apologize for this something I did like 27 years ago, honey"

"I don't accept, I don't accept"

"I was upset in the moment, I was lost"

Accepting the apology, Matthew turn around to hug Skeet

"I'm sorry"

"Somebody called us the first"

"The husbands of horror", Skeet completed

"Dad and dad!", you exclaimed

"Our hugs are not sideways in private", Skeet clarified before sitting

"I'm Alex, if you can pick one character from every Scream movie and it can't be your own to save, who would you pick?"

"I would say Henry Winkler obviously", Skeet responded but then he saw Matthew's face, "Wait, wait, wait, let me apologize"

"Jamie is sitting right there, Jack is sitting right there", Matthew exclaimed, "Jamie is the voice of the audience"

"Henry had all of those great rules"

"And Henry also attended his econ classes"

"I would say Jamie Kennedy and Jack Champion", Matthew said, "I don't remember their characters names, Randy and Ethan over here, I actually think that both Jamie and Jack are gifts, Jamie in that movie is lovely, and Jack is a very talented young man and we both died with the same TV in the head"

Feeling emotional, Jamie ran to hug Matthew who was quick to stand and try to scape but it was late, because Jamie hug him and almost jump on his back

"I have a husband!, Matthew explained, "I have a husband!"

"Who I would save?", Jamie spoke once they returned to their seats, "That's hard to ask"

"I'm right here", Matthew replied, "You don't have to tell me, cause I'm still alive"

"He's still alive, how many people believe that Matthew is still alive", Jamie continued, "I think you're still alive, I would save you if you weren't alive, but if not I would say David"

"I can't say either of these two because I killed them and I wouldn't be the hero, but for me it would be Randy and then Dewey", Neve responded, "It was so painful to watch that"

"Shotout to David Arquette and Courtney Cox who are part of this big family", the lead commented

"I think I'm going to say Quinn, because she's my sister, and also Dewey"

"I have a top five of characters I would save", you said, "Tatum, Jennifer Jolie, Randy, Anika and Ethan"

"You wouldn't save your father?", Skeet asked with pretended indignation

"Billy was a walking red flag, sorry dad", you justified, "I mean, the first thing he says to Sidney on the movie is that The Exorcist reminded him of her"

"You are so right", Neve nodded

"Hi, my name is Nik and I have a question is for Jack, first of all, you were awesome in both Avatar and Scream, so I was wondering who would win a fight between Spider and Ethan?"

"First of all, thank you so much, I really apreciate it, and related to the question, I've never really thought about that, I mean they both have good qualities that can help them in fighting and that, but I think that Spider will be the absolute winner, because um he grew up in Pandora, learned how to fight like the na'vi with all the weapons and fight styles, so yeah, my final answer is Spider"

"Hello, I know you guys are like from movies where a person literally murders people, but what's your favorite Pokemon?"

"What Pokemon are you?", Matthew asked

"I'm Mimikyu"

"That's my favorite", Matthew said

"Mine too", Skeet followed

"Yes, he is a good Pokemon"

"Hi, I'm Liv, I'm a huge fan of Scream but I'm also huge fan of Riverdale, and I was wondering, Skeet, what was it like moving from a serial killer to a dad?"

"Yeah dad, how it was?", you joked

"You're obviously not a parent, it's so close, it's almost the same thing", Matthew said to the girl who asked the question

"Um, you know, yeah I became a dad in real life, well before in Riverdale, but I'm I love that cast, Y/N had the opportunity to go back and Jack got to meet them a week ago, you know, Cole Sprouse is a dear friend of mine, us, now, one of the sweetest, smartest, kindest people, yeah, I missed those guys, in terms of playing it, I don't know, I've been a dad for fifteen years at the point I started that role so I didn't feel that much of a stretch, what was a stretch was, I like to think of myself as a really good dad and he was not a good dad at all, so that was kind of fun to let those demons a little bit, but thank you, thank you so much"

"Can I just add on to that?", Jamie asked, "I think that Skeet is not a dad, he's everybody's daddy"

"Not that word", you exclaimed before covering yourself and Tatum completely with the blanket

"All I know is on Father's Day, my older daughter Naiia writes 'dear father', well you can't write 'dear daddy'", Skeet joked before pointing at Jamie, "Thanks to people like you"

"That word is forbidden in our house", you said uncovering your head

"I didn't say zaddy", Jamie continued

"This got weird", Matthew commented, "Next question"

"Please", Jack said

"My name is Juliet, and my question is if there was like anybody who's like death you would want to be, because there like a lot of cool deaths, which death would you rather have I guess"

"Favorite kill, that's always a good, hard question", Skeet commented

"Tatum", Neve said

"Yeah, I've always wondered what it'd be like to go through a garage door opener", Skeet joked

"Thank God we don't have one", you also joked

"What I was gonna say is that we've got a ton of fans out here, um three thousand plus people that have lived and brought up with you, so many young generations that are now discovering this, I'd love that each one of you just kind of went down and just said, you know how the fans mean to you and all the folks that are here to just being in your presence and you know honor the films that you created", the lead said, "Do you have any final words for the fans?"

"First of all, thank you for your question, we were not like throwing that aside, thank you so much", Skeet said, "It's hard to express to be honest, you know, people outside of this world who you know or even actors who don't really necessarily know what we're doing here this weekend can't understand the energy exchange that happens between us and you, I know we all do our best to give you our undivided attention at the table to feel a part of your life for whatever brief moments we get, but the gratitude that we have for you is limitless, I mean, we talk about it all the time and I'm incredibly grateful for you guys, you, you know, we're at a time in our business right now that the future is a bit uncertain and to be honest it's always uncertain, we're in a job where we don't know how much we'll make in a year typically and sometimes is zero, so for you to come out here to take the time to spend your hard-earned money on something to be quite honest that for most of our careers we gave them give away, you know, because we're grateful as it is, it means the world to us, it does feed our families, it does more than you could imagine, so it's not taken with a grain of salt, it is deeply inside of us how grateful we are for each and every one of you"

"I'll just add to that man, I can't really add much more to that, he's one hundred percent correct and it's just the amounts of just, you guys are just voracious with your love and you believe in us and you and it's just look at this, this is 27 years later and you brought, I mean, the energy is incredible, every time I get somebody in my line from older to younger I'm absolutely amazed and I'm just lucky to be a part of it and I just wanted to say thank you and it's like, you brought us back togheter, we've become like a closer little knit family and that's because of you and now we're all one family so I want to say thank you", Jamie continued

"Yeah, I mean all of that, we don't exist without you guys, there is no art unless it's witnessed, you know when you're doing theater you get a sense of an audience and what they're getting from what you're creating and in film and television you don't get that sense unless you do something like this and when I started doing these I really got a very clear sense of the movies have had and my character has had and how much it can mean to people at a level that you know it's really really hard to comprehend and, you know for me I'm an artist because I want to touch people, I want to communicate, I want to feel you, I want you to feel me, I want to understand, I want to storytell, the world gets closer as we share our stories, we understand each other better, perhaps we can be more peaceful with understanding and, sorry I'm gonna cry", Neve said, "I love you guys"

Hearing and seeing how emotional Neve was, you were quick to hug her and rest your head on her shoulder, while Matthew also rubbed her other arm

"Don't fuck with the original!", someone from the audience exclaimed

"Honestly it's I think you can see why, um, I don't know, it's I think they were special because I think that we care deeply and I don't think that I think it's hard on Hollywood sometimes to show how much you appreciate to because there is this sense of like everything's always perfect for us, that we live in this social media world where you asume our lives are pitch perfect and they're not, we go up and go down, we have complications and I think one of the things about this cast that continually amazes me is that their ability to express honest gratitude and so I have nothing to add other than I'm grateful to be with you guys"

"I feel like I can talk in representation of this whole new generation when I say that we are so grateful for recieving us with open arms and giving us the opportunity to tell the stories of the new characters, you know, entering to a franchise who has been alive for 27 years is scary, not gonna lie, because of the generations of fans and you don't know how they are going to react, but after feeling the warm hug of the fandom once you enter so it's really gratifying and nice to be welcome, and this is something for life because of the people you know while filming, they became your friends, your family, and this is one of the great things about this kind of projects", Jack said

"I feel like they said everything so I'm going to do my best", you joked, "This franchise and fandom are still relevant to this day to you guys, because you keep passing the movies through generations, and demostrate interest and love for this movies through your videos, theories, rankings, edits, fanarts, cosplays, custom toys, tattoos, even fanfics, and more other things were you show your love for this, so I'm pretty sure that this franchise is going to last forever because the love each and everyone of you have for the movies is inconditional, so thank you so much for the love you have for every person that is part of this movies"

"You're my favorite content creator!", someone screamed from the audience

"Thank you", you responded

"Fan Expo Denver show and pass your appreciation one more time for Jamie Kennedy, Skeet Ulrich, Jack Champion, Y/N Ulrich, Matthew Lillard and Neve Campbell!"

Standing from the couches, the six of you along with the cats posed for a few photos with the fans behind before leaving to go back to the signings and other stuff programed for the day

Returning to the autograph tables, both of you shared a table the expo put during the panel where they put photos to give autographs where a line was starting to grow, leaving for a moment to go to the Avatar cosplay meet up before returning and satying there signing autographs during the rest of the day

okay buckle up because this will probably end up pretty long but:

While there are similarities in both situations there are some major differences in many aspects:

First Caitis claim was originally that she got touched under her shirt which got interpreted as in on the waist and that’s what George confirmed, later she changed it/clarified? it was her boobs?

Beaus claim is she got kissed and then the guy proceeded to start making out with her which she described as basically more kissing

Caiti in her first stream says she was “freshly eighteen” which got quickly disproven based on her birthday and when vidcon happened and she is very firm on letting people know that the guy was 8 years older than her and that he definitely knew her age. Which later George addressed and said that no he didn’t know her age and he assumed she was over 21 based on the information he had. Caiti is clearly trying to make people come to conclusions that it was predatory

Beau never tries to paint the guy as predatory, they were I think both 17 or similar age. The guys response is “omg she is trying to paint me as predatory”

George is very empathetic in his response, while he shows his perspective he is still mindful of Caitis perspective and feelings and asks people tobe supportive to her

The guy Beau confronts starts going around telling their mutual friends “she lied” and when she posted about it on twitter denied everything, didn’t think about her feelings at all and again claims she is trying to paint him as predatory and destroy his career.

Beaus main problem isn’t that the guy is bad for making her uncomfortable, it’s the way he and their friends reacted after she talked to them how it made her uncomfortable to the point of having a panic attack in his bathroom

In Georges situation bo one seems to care about his response from the beginning and immediately write him off as a terrible person that can never learn and change

obviously the brightons bastards different reactions:

- not hearing out the victim vs not hearing out the guy who got accused

- different response when the guy who is accused is their friend vs someone they disliked for a long time

- jumping to tweeting about it vs the only response publicly is maxggs priv tweet yesterday qrting a dream stan that he stopped being friends with beau for different reason obviously not further explanation and that he only laughed about her on stream few times and later let her know about it???

Caitis story having many inconsistencies, things being corrected by George with evidence

Beau telling her story and being called a liar by the guy who she accused with no evidence she is and her friends just immediately believing the guy

idk if there’s more but here are things I immediately noticed

similarities is both stories are girls getting uncomfortable but not sa. different reactions from all sides in both stories to them?

yeah I'd say this is a decently fair assessment of it all but a few quick notes for those who want to be picky with details:

george confirmed "under the shirt touching", people originally took that to mean the waist (because that was how most people interpreted her initial claim) however he never specified beyond that iirc so I just wanna make it clear in case people wanna be picky about wording lol

I will say, as soon as Beau called it sexual assault, she is accusing this guy of SA. So to say her main problem is with how her ex-friends reacted is a bit inaccurate considering she is also essentially accusing this guy of a crime. Now, how much of her friends behavior rather than the guy's behavior contributed to her trying to commit multiple times? we don't really know. So i get what you were trying to say in making that point

but overall yes there are many differences which I think is why people have been saying not to compare them (on twitter) because the details are quite nuanced in each of them for different reasons and if you don't acknowledge that, then you're not representing each situation fairly or accurately I suppose.

a/n: I’m sorry this chapter might suck a little, but I wasn’t completely inspired while I was writing it so pls bear with me😩

«What’s wrong with you?» yells the boy in front of the closed – locked – door. He stands there for another couple of minutes, then turns to look at you with a frown. «I’m sorry,» he says.

«What for?» you reply, smiling slightly, «I guess your friends had the same stupid idea as mine.»

«Did they lock you up here too?»

«Why else would I be in the boys’ toilets?» you chuckle with a shrug.

«Well, I guess my friends aren’t as original as they think they are then,» he continues, scratching the back of his head, clearly embarrassed. «I’m Shotaro, by the way.»

«I’m y/n, and I think we should either convince our friends to let us out or find a way to escape.»

He smiles at you enough to reassure you that he isn’t some creepy or dangerous guy. Once you establish that he is to be trusted – at least in the situation you find yourself in – you leave your spot at the corner and reach him in front of the door. «Any idea on how to do either of them?»

He frowns again, probably because he’s just recognized the laugh of one of his friends from the other side of the door. He then does a little pout that makes you smile unconsciously, and you find yourself thinking how cute he is and how come you have never noticed him before. “That’s because you don’t notice any boy at all,” says a voice in your head that sounds too similar to Giselle’s, and that causes you a mental facepalm. «My friends aren’t that easy to convince, above all if they’re doing this for a reason?» he says, interrupting your thoughts.

«What could be the reason for locking you in the toilets?»

«I don’t know. What could be the reason why your friends locked you up here?»

«They just seem to love pulling pranks on me. It's the second time they’ve locked me in the toilets!»

Shotaro’s eyes widen as he looks like he’s having a stroke of genius, like he’s suddenly thought about something important you can’t figure yet. «The second time, you say?»

You nod, confused.

«And what did you have to do to get out the first time?» he asks, but you still can’t understand how that will help you.

«Well, it might sound weird, but I had to text an unknown number written…»

«…on the toilet door,» he interrupts you, completing your sentence, and just like that, everything seems to make sense to you too. All the hints that were given to you, your friends’ latest weird cryptic tweets and their strange behavior… and then the way he looks at you, the words he uses, the sound of his voice… everything seems to be in place, and you can finally give a face to the unknown guy you’ve been talking to for weeks.

«No way,» you whisper, «are you… toilet number guy?»

«I guess I am, mystery girl,» he replies, and his smile becomes wider.

Your heart makes a sudden jump, and you can feel your legs shaking. You knew a lot about him, talked day and night about everything, and you couldn’t wait to meet him, imagining what it would be like to find out who he was and see him in person. Now that he’s here, right in front of you, your limbs are getting weaker and your brain blurred, something you’re sure has never happened to you before, and that scares you. «Why did I… how come… how is it possible? I mean I… I have never seen you here,» you stutter, then you have another flash of genius. «Does this mean our friends knew everything?»

«I don’t know your friends, but considering mine, that’s highly possible,» he says. You can’t obviously know this, but at this same moment, his heart is beating so fast he’s afraid you might hear it. If it weren’t for the dimmed lights of the toilets, you could have also seen his cheeks on fire. You both have so many things to tell each other, but you feel like saying nothing as if the silence is speaking for you. «Do you want to get boba after the match?» he asks you, and you can hear the distinctive sound of the door unlocking.

NMTDaily: A Wild Hero Appears

- It makes me a little sad that Bea tweets out this video with “meet the prettier version of me”. You’re beautiful in your own right, Beatrice, and I don’t think Hero would want you to compliment her by putting yourself down. This moment starts to show Beatrice’s insecurities, in a very teenage-girl way. It feels very accurate to that time of life for sure.

- What’s interesting, though, is that this tweet, where Bea thinks of herself as less pretty than Hero, is a direct parallel to and reversal of the moment in a future episode when Claudio tells Ben who he likes (Hero), and asks what Ben thinks of her, and Ben says he prefers her cousin, naming no names. These lines are adapted from the play. Now, I’m not going to say it’s good or ok for the guys to be comparing the girls to each other, even unintentionally, and of course Beatrice has to develop her own self-confidence outside of what anyone else thinks of her. But it is very sweet that at the time she makes that self-deprecating tweet, Beatrice already, unknown to her, has someone who looks at her before anyone else, who always thinks she’s the prettiest girl in the room. It’s just that even he doesn’t know it yet! Ben has thought Beatrice was gorgeous since long before he could admit it to himself, and that just makes me happy.

- I bet Hero’s “you’re not so bad looking yourself, Bea” is her answer to the tweet. She’s too sweet even to directly address it.

- Hero reading TFIOS is so incredibly 2014. (I can also tell she’s an actress and isn’t actually reading it right now because she’s that far into the book and she isn’t SOBBING. I’ll never forget how hard I cried and I’m not afraid to admit it.)

- “Hero it’s Darcy on a horse” being the thing to get her attention is hilarious and adorable and how many Jane Austen Movie Nights do we think she and Bea have had? Definitely some!

- Hero is adorable and we love her enthusiasm and many many video ideas 😆

- there are so many amazing quotes in this episode. “room tour. room tour. ROOM TOUR”; “I am very proud of the witty capabilities of 3-in-the-morning me” amazing.

- Bea is starting what’s essentially senior year in April at a new school. That has to be stressful. Good that she seems cheery about it. I’m sure she’s not at all worried about who else is in her classes…

- Now I want lemonade! Lol. But US lemonade for me. Research is telling me that NZ/Aotearoa lemonade is just basically lemon soda, like it is in the UK, as opposed to the US lemon juice + water + sugar situation. I hope Bea gets to try US lemonade on her travel year. It’s so good when it’s good.

- the Hersula origins! “She’s so lovely I catch myself wanting her to insult me” 💕

- Shoutout to the NMTD Fandom Revival Discord for catching the fact that Bea’s line “what is this cake even for” is a reference to the TARDIS cake Ursula shared on her tumblr, showing that Ursula and Hero surprised Bea with the cake for no reason at all, they’re just that sweet and lovely!

- A brief aside: Ursula’s tumblr has been lovely. She’s posted lots of desserts including one that she said is her dad’s specialty, so now I headcanon that she likes to bake because it’s something she and her dad do together. Ursula lore!

- Poor Meg. It’s tough to be an early bloomer, and you can tell the girls know they shouldn’t be making fun of her for it. I’m glad Hero told Bea to stop, but she was still going along with it and was the one who said the “Queen of Scream” line. We know they’ll learn, though.

- I also notice the link to Ursula’s first video in the description of this episode is now broken and goes to a page that says the video doesn’t exist. Fortunately VOX POPS is alive, well, and next in the playlist. Interesting how links break over time.

- This episode is apparently from before the characters start answering YouTube comments, I checked the comment section. That’s something I’m interested to see whether the NMTDaily emails will highlight, because I remember the characters’ comments being very fun to read! Good for immersion too!

- I’m embarrassed to even admit this, and I blame growing up without cable tv or video games, but I’m just now realizing this title is a Pokémon reference. This show was always even nerdier and more full of pop culture references than I realized! Excited to see if I find anything else I didn’t get before!

A few weeks ago I made a post about some ideas I had for my multi-fandom crossover (though mostly Danganronpa) fic idea The Fog Cutters (which I had started at one point on AO3 but I wasn't happy with how it was going so it's on indefinite hiatus and I hope to restart it from scratch eventually), but I deleted it because I didn't like how I worded the post (I felt like it came off kinda fanpol-y at some points which wasn't my intention, and also there was at least one hot take that I felt I could've worded better), and also I said that these ideas were things I was considering headcanoning for Danganronpa as a whole when in hindsight I don't think I'm invested in these ideas enough to consider them actual headcanons that I have for the series, and also-also... no one seemed to notice it anyway. But I'd like to give it another go because I do still want to share these ideas and maybe share some more ideas that I didn't mention before as well? I'll put them under the cut so if you don't care, or if you are interested in the fic idea but don't want to get spoiled in case any of this stuff ends up in the fic, you can just skip it.

First thing's first: I'm actually making bios for the characters appearing in the fic, mostly to help keep things consistent because of how much thought I'm putting in this one fic idea, but also because it's fun. And I'm wondering if I should post these somewhere? Either on AO3 or on here? And if I post it on here, should I make a sideblog for that (and for The Fog Cutters stuff in general)? If anyone would like to see that, let me know!

But for now, I'll first start with the ideas I mentioned in that original post:

Chihiro and Chiaki are cousins.

This one is actually a fairly common headcanon I've been seeing lately, and I'm kinda on the fence on it for Danganronpa in general, but I like the idea enough that I would like to go that route for at least The Fog Cutters. And part of the reason why I'm interested in going this direction with the fic is because of this next idea:

Chihiro and Chiaki's mothers are identical twins.

This idea mostly came from the fact that, before Chiaki was retconned into being a real person and was still just an AI Chihiro created, there was concept art from Ultra Despair Girls that suggested that Chiaki's design in-universe might have been based on Chihiro's mother. (Basically Chihiro's mother looks like Chiaki when her hair is down and her glasses are removed, in case you haven't seen the concept art for her.) And personally I think this is a better idea than an earlier idea I had where Chiaki was a clone of Chihiro's mother. Don't ask me how that would work or why that would have been a thing.

I even came up with names for Chihiro and Chiaki's mothers, which is something that I deliberately avoided doing in Despair Imitator because I figured the moment I gave Chihiro's mother a name (which, for the record, I've never been super confident in, coming up with names for characters I'm happy with) Kodaka would make a tweet saying "By the way, Chihiro's mom's name is Blahblahblah." Well, fuck it. I'm doing it now. So I figured I'd continue the theme naming with the whole "Chi"/"Thousand" thing, so I gave them the names Chiharu and Chinatsu respectively. Not only do their names kinda work with their respective families ("Chiharu" and "Chihiro" sounding similar, and "Chinatsu" and "Nanami" both having "na" in the names), but also it's a little funny because Chihiro actually kinda breaks the theme naming here. Like for some reason Chiharu decided to stick with the theme naming just enough to keep the "Chi" thing going, but not enough to go with the name "Chifuyu." Is there a story there? Could there be more world and character building that can come out of this? (The answer is yes; I'm considering having Chiaki be named in honor of a sibling the twins had that died young, and they have a still living sibling named Chifuyu. In other words, Chiharu and Chinatsu's parents were super into the "thousand seasons" theme naming, and the twins just kept the "thousand" part.)

The Fujisaki family line (and possibly Chihiro's mother's family line as well) were originally from Nagasaki.

This is where it gets a little crazy. I wasn't expecting to come up with ideas for a character's full-on ancestral history, but then again this is Chihiro and I've been a Chihiro stan for pretty much as long as I've been a Danganronpa fan, so this isn't really all that surprising.

Anyway, the idea largely stemmed from both the Fujisakis being an incredibly intelligent family, and the fact that Chihiro's old high school had "St." in the name, suggesting it's a Christian (likely Catholic) school (which could also explain Chihiro's dialogues about the concept of souls and Chihiro's discomfort with the idea of an always present, all-knowing god). Nagasaki has historically played a big role in the presence of Christianity in Japan, as well as its persecution during the Edo period. Also during the Edo period, Nagasaki was one of the few places in Japan that traded with other countries, and the only place that traded with China and the Dutch, which resulted in Japanese scholars of the time moving to that area to learn more about the outside world (basically during that time if you were Japanese and for whatever reason you wanted to know just what in the fuck was going on in Europe at that time, Nagasaki was where you had to go). A Christian heritage could also potentially explain why the Fujisaki family writes their name as "two unblooming (flowers)"; it could have been a show of humility. Granted, the out-of-universe explanation for this is probably just a joke about how Chihiro has no tits and it really isn't all that deep, but fuck it. It's fun coming up with in-universe reasons for this stuff.

Since (at least as far as I'm aware) Chihiro and Taichi don't have speech patterns or mannerisms that suggest they are from the Nagasaki region, presumably at some point their ancestors moved to somewhere near Tokyo. Given what would unfortunately eventually happen to Nagasaki, I have a pretty good idea of when that likely would have happened too.

Hina had/has unrequited feelings for Sakura.

Taking a break from the Fujisakis for now, this was the last thing I mentioned in the old post. In fact this was the hot take I was concerned about, particularly the part where I suggested making Sakura *le gasp* straight??? Which is a hill I'm not willing to die on, especially during pride month, so we'll just leave Sakura's sexuality ambiguous (though given that pretty much everyone in my fic is bisexual unless stated otherwise, making Sakura straight would, funny enough, actually make the cast more diverse; plus, think about all the stereotypes we'd be dismantling if Sakura was the one confirmed cishet person in the cast). But in case you're wondering, this idea largely stemmed from the following observations:

Hina seems way more into Sakura than Sakura is into Hina. Ignoring for a moment that Sakura has a boyfriend (something the fandom already does on a regular basis anyway), the way Sakura speaks to and talks about Hina is way different from how Hina speaks to and talks about Sakura. Even looking at chapter four, Hina is going to all these lengths to help or defend Sakura, and even tries to commit murder-suicide to avenge her, and yet Sakura in her suicide note is just like "You are my best friend," like talk about friendzoned, fuck. Also, in School Mode, if Makoto asks Sakura about Hina, Sakura basically immediately accuses Makoto of being a nastly little lesbian porn addicted gooner bitch. ...Okay, I'm exaggerating for comedic effect, but she does basically accuse him of having some kind of girl-on-girl fantasy about them. But if Makoto asks Hina about Sakura, Hina immediately glows up and is like "Isn't Sakura the best? She's the fucking best!" Like she was just waiting to hype Sakura up to somebody. Honestly starting to feel a little bad for Hina here, not gonna lie.

I mentioned this already in the first bullet point but... yeah, Sakura has a boyfriend. I mean granted he's basically dying and would probably be dead by the time my fic takes place (most of the DR cast is 23-25 years old in my fic), but still, we tend to forget this a lot. Again, she could be bisexual (and no, I'm not convinced it's a comphet situation either; he was literally her Captive), so this point isn't nearly as important as the other two. But I think it's still worth mentioning.

I don't think I've ever seen this dynamic for Hina and Sakura... ever. Either they're both inexplicably straight (which... no, I don't care how many hoops you have to jump through, there is no fucking way Hina is straight) or they're already fucking. It's always one or the other. There is no in-between. Well I reject this reality. There is untapped potential here. Some good old fashioned quality angst just waiting to be written.

This next idea was briefly alluded to in the original post, but it wasn't really a major point and I didn't really go into much detail on it in the original post, so I'm viewing this as the first new idea on the list:

Makoto's (Un?)Lucky Love Life Registered Trademark

Heavy emphasis on the "Un" being in parentheses and having a question mark after it because can you really consider yourself unlucky if you're dating Hina?

All joking aside, I put a hilarious amount of thought into Makoto's love life just to explain why he's dating Hina in the story, because for some reason I had a feeling someone would question it at some point because some fans are like that. So here's a list for that too:

Makoto and Sayaka reunited at Hope's Peak Academy, and things play out largely the same as their FTEs in the game. But then reality sets in and Sayaka, being an idol who will do anything to keep that dream alive, basically can't date Makoto because idol industry bullshit. So yeah, she likes him, but her career comes first. They part on good terms.

Haven't decided yet if Mukuro (and Junko for that matter) ever went to Hope's Peak in this universe, so we'll gloss over that for now. But even if they did, I don't think Mukuro would have acted on her crush.

Mutual feelings between Makoto and Hina and Chihiro were had at some point during their time at Hope's Peak but a constant string of insecurities, other crushes, and that whole "not wanting to ruin their friendships" thing kept them from knowing that the other two felt the same way, so nothing really happens there... at least not between these three. Sometimes foreshadowing is relatively obvious

Kyoko sees potential in Makoto as a detective and also he reminds her of Yui and he's also kinda cute so there's that and the two end up working together as detective and apprentice, and they eventually start dating. This relationship actually continues past Hope's Peak for some time, but sadly it doesn't last, as Kyoko hasn't fully gotten over what happened to Yui and is genuinely afraid of that happening all over again with Makoto. So they are basically left with two options: stay in a relationship but be separated for long periods of time as Kyoko does regular detective work while Makoto stays out of the picture alone, or break up and save them both the potential heartache of losing their romantic partner while on a case. They end up choosing option two, and they continue to work together.

Sometime after this breakup, Makoto reconnects with Hina (preferably at the Olympics when Hina wins the gold, because I just think that would be a neat scene), they hit it off, and they start dating.

Makoto moving into Chihiro's apartment also happens after Makoto and Kyoko break up, but that's probably not going to be relevant. ...Maybe. ...Depends on if I go the poly route.

Here on out are ideas I'd like to share that I haven't fully fleshed out yet, so they will just be in bullet points.

As mentioned briefly earlier, Kyoko never got over Yui's death. Out of literally everything else in this post, this one is guaranteed to be in the fic the most. It will come up. That's not a threat; it's a promise.

Kyoko's maternal grandfather never liked Jin and was complicit in backing up Fuhito's lie that Jin abandoned Kyoko (likely canon as well, considering how the guy posing as him in DRK acts).

Byakuya comes out as trans and goes by the Polaris P. Polanski identity (though this is partially to make up for me portraying Chihiro and Persona 4's Naoto as cisgender because I know that can be a sore spot for some fans of these two series, I also think the Polaris identity is kinda interesting and in general the idea makes me want to actually write something for Byakuya, so I consider this a net positive).

I also plan to include Deadman Wonderland's resident trans queen and best girl candidate (when your competition includes Makina, Kasuga, and Karako it's hard to choose a best girl) Chaplin Sukegawa at some point. And unlike the Polaris idea, this one is not here to make up for cis Chihiro and Naoto whatsoever, but instead because I've always wanted to write something for one of the best characters in the Deadman Wonderland manga, who, for the record, totally should've been in the anime, goddammit! We were robbed! Robbed, I say! ...And yes, this will be ending!Chaplin too: looking good and directing plays and shit. Living her dreams and being happy, hell yeah.

If anyone reading this is still concerned about Chihiro and Naoto, they are both trans allies and I want to make that clear in the fic too. I'm even considering slightly tweaking Chihiro's backstory a bit to suggest that Chihiro presenting as a girl was partially due to Chihiro considering the possibility he might be a trans girl, though the bullying will still factor in and presenting as a girl ends up giving Chihiro dysphoria. But effectively walking a mile in trans people's shoes gives Chihiro a better understanding of their struggles and plays a big role in him becoming an open trans ally. As for Naoto, she doesn't need a backstory, she's just cool like that.

Despite all the crazy claims and shit talking that Miu says, Chihiro is the only one in their group chat (which, if you haven't read my first attempt at this fic, includes Pidge from Voltron: Legendary Defender and Futaba from Persona 5, both of whom are 21 in the fic, though this age lift is mostly to portray them as being legally allowed to drink) who is not a virgin. He doesn't like to talk about it. Spoilers, especially for those of you who are worried about this: he lost it to Mondo during their Hope's Peak days. It was consensual; it's more what happens to their relationship afterwards that's the issue for Chihiro. But that's a story for another time.

This is all for now. Probably more than I should be sharing, honestly, but I don't even know how much of this will end up in the fic, so... maybe not spoilers? But hopefully spoilers. Hopefully as in hopefully I don't pull a World of Remnant and leave this all in outside material and also hopefully I actually feel confident enough to write this someday. But for now, this is it. I hope somebody out there likes it. I hope it doesn't result in any discourse because I'm terrible at it and also not in the mood. Lots of hoping in this post, I hope Monokuma doesn't notice.

about the wmmap side stories, do you think there is any chance of seeing some scenes from the novel? For example Athy and Claude going to the city, Lucas giving Athy a dragon or maybe something about lp universe?

As a personal taste I would really like if spoon made a reference to the other wmmap universes, where athy marries ijekiel and in which she has a daughter with Lucas, also that Lucas and Athy meet in korea (I'll die if a only panel hinting at that) I'm so excited for the side stories, every day that passes I feel like I'm dying (yes, very dramatic)

The other thing that excites me to think is that when the side stories come out, the entire manhwa community is going to lose it and so am I, i want to see my whole social media just about them again, I miss my girl Athy 🤧

Spoon has said that the side stories will be, at the very least, about:

Claude and Athy visiting Anastasius and Jennette

Claude and Diana's romance story

Lily and Felix's stories (people took this as it being the story of their -so far, fanon- romance but in the way it was worded, it seemed to me that it was just about their individual backstories? There could be some ship fuel there, sure, but I don't think it will be all romance)

Claude and Ana's youth feat. young Roger

The daily life of the maids at the Emerald Palace (This is unconfirmed information, so don't quote me on it but: a good friend told me the chinese notice about the side stories changed "a maid's daily life" to "Athy's daily life" after people got mad over the former being boring. Again, this is unconfirmed, but I wonder what's up with that, because yeah, the daily life of a maid does kind of sound boring. But the text of the chapter itself does say it's about the maids)

The way it was worded, it's not clear to me if these will be 5 chapters, if the stories could span for more than one chapter, nor if those will be all the side stories. So, there's a possibility they will include more than just those summaries. Which leaves room for speculation!

As for what I want: I really want Nox to be included in some way. Even a single throwaway panel about Lucas gifting him to Athy. Please. The dragon extra is amazing as well, so I would love to see it. Claude and Athy visiting the market would be so funny, but it could be kind of included on their visit to Mietta. Oh, I'm actually dying to get more backstory about Lily and Felix as individual characters. Lily's meeting with Diana, what her family situation is like, Felix's early relationship with Claude, are our fan theories about Felix being an illegitimate child true? There is a good chance some of these questions will be answered, so I'm very much looking forward to it. Also, please more worldbuilding in general!

The LP side stories... I think we probably won't get them. Mainly for two reasons: They were insanely long (over 20 chapters if I recall correctly); and also, it would ruin the fandom's opinion of... like 70% of the cast. Comparing both the novel and the manhwa, I think it's pretty obvious that Spoon tried to make everyone way nicer and soften up their ugly flaws, so I doubt she would end WMMAP with Athy suffering at the hands of... kind of everyone except Lily and Lucas. Though I would love to see my edgy boy LP! Lucas.

Spoon actually does include a lot of the novel's material even after deviating from the original plot, so I think we could get some scenes or references to the novel, but probably not LP?

Also, yes, it does feel painfully boring without any WMMAP news on the horizon. Someone said manhwa fandom died with WMMAP's ending, and while that's a little dramatic and maybe biased, I kind of agree lmao. Like, there's no flood of excited tweets every 10 days when 12 AM KRW hits the clock. There's no manhwa characters trending on Twitter. No "every single one of my followers changed their pfps to the new Lucas panels and now I can't tell them apart, help".

Ah, those were the golden days... -> sounding like an old woman.

I need to know your feelings about love live 2 global

SIF2 was a mistake.

God I have a lot of feelings about it. This is probably going to get rambly as hell.

Even if SIF2 kinda sucked I had still planned on getting EN just because I want to play a LL game again (i don't really understand linklike's gameplay so I'm hoping someone makes a guide now that SIF is dead in a ditch). I'm... probably not going to bother now. Maybe I'll get it to play some charts, maybe not now i've just remembered how much storage it takes as well.

Announcing your game's EOS date in the same tweet as announcing the launch month (not even a date) is insane. What the hell even. Like, this is genuinely such a PR disaster that it broke containment so badly. LL became talked about worldwide and... relevant, i guess, for the first time in years. We got on saved you a click. We got on gamesradar. Head in hands.

Like, I get why they're still launching it. Obviously staff have worked their asses off for over a year on this to the point they already had to push it back, and suddenly scrapping that plus telling fans who'd waited a year for this that they weren't even getting it is a bit shit. You can tell the only reason they're releasing it is because of this, because there's no reason for it to outlive the JP server.

I have no doubt that this was dumped on EN staff last minute. They retweeted the JP shutdown notice to the EN account for crying out loud. This wasn't meant to happen it clearly was JP staff deciding the game was failing and pulling the plug.

Even from the JP side of things it was a very last minute decision LIKE COME ON. Wien and Tomari were added last month and their only UR cards are their fucking birthday cards. That's it the event schedules have been released ahead of time they aren't getting more URs. They're having to release Shizuku, Kinako, You and Maki's URs early bc the game didn't even live to their birthdays. This wasn't meant to happen.

Not even just on EN side but SIF as a series dying is a massive thing. Like sure we still have Paradise and SIFAC wai wai, but Paradise is. well... and Waiwai is actually decent but outdated and doesn't receive updates because there's nothing to port bc they don't do SIFAC anymore. SIF dying also means u's is actually proper dead now. Like. yeah no more u's aside from the occasional LLdays illustration and annual new years stream (we don't even get thanksgiving fes anymore god). We're not gonna get N girl content anymore either bro it's so over for LL.

SIF1 was outdated and probably should've had a sequel game released that was still a similar enough game (aka not sifas) just updated to get with the times. Honestly to this day I still think SIF had the best F2P accessibility out of any game, as well as the best team building system (bc. well it actually had one like you actually had to strategically build your teams). If SIF2 wanted to be good all it had to do was add L2D (and like ACTUAL L2D not what they did in SIF2 where they slightly animated the sprites), update the gacha animation, give us cards closer to the quality of SIFAS (or even better bandori or proseka), and add 3DMV or something. Literally just make SIF1 with proseka/bandori features. You don't even have to make the story better because it isn't even canon. And what we got was SIF1 with better UI and card art, and everything else was worse including the gameplay because they broke sliders.

The fact they shut down the original game for this, and possibly even SIFAS. It's insane how poorly this was managed. Saw a tweet earlier about how fucked up it is how Nijigaku have several songs based on in-game stories from both SIFAS and SIF2 and both of them are just. Lost media ig now. Even SIF1 stories are lost media because no where archived them. God that's so fucked actually like so much content just gone forever. EVEN OFFICIAL NOVEL TRANSLATIONS WERE IN SIF1 AND THEY'RE JUST GONE.

It's insane to think that the best LL rhythm game now is an outdated PS4 arcade port (the best game is actually linklike but it's not really much a rhythm game). Other than that there's * checks notes * Tokimeki RunRuns, Blaze in the Deep Blue, Numazu in the Mirage, and the upcoming Niji game. None of which are rhythm games.

I saw some people discussing that maybe that cross-unit live that's bringing back saint snow will have a new game announcement and while I doubt SIF3 i honestly kinda hope there's something coming with that concert. So I found it on Reddit scrolling through the acotar sub but this was like a year ago now, a girl on there was replying to another user who noticed the parallels between twilight & acotar & the user who replied still had the fanfic downloaded & she basically did a side by side of SJM’s twilight fanfic & ACOTAR & it’s pretty much the same just obviously fae instead of vampires & werewolves & a magic system, I have no idea if the conversation is still up on there so you’ll have to check it out

She also had a load of old tweets from Sarah that mentioned that Tamlin & Feyre were endgame up to book 3 because that was were the series was originally meant to end & Rhysand was gonna stay the villain in the trilogy

KINDA UNFORTUNATE THAT I FINALLY GOT TO MAKE MINOR EDITS THAT MAKES THE ART LOOK BETTER TO ME AFTER I ALREADY POSTED THE INITIAL SKETCH ON MAIN...

Oh well. Whenever I get to refine the drawing more, I'll just post that on main again

I enjoy my art style but I also feel insecure about my sketches so the feeling of posting something that will be reblogged only for me to make minor edits/improvements/adjustments later is DAKLSKLSDKLDSKL to me

Though I also get that this is a sketch (and my art will go through many different iterations) as I continue to refine it (and as my art style improves)

Basically, I adjusted the tilt of the head, moved the eyes down and slightly redrew it, adjusted the placement of the nose and mouth by a few pixels, shortened the length of the nose

Cuz with the whole pose in mind, I feel like having the head tilted sm messes with the flow of the pose (especially since the pose is so neutral) so I adjusted the head tilt

The proportions just look better to me now, so I fixed what was bothering me

Judar's expression is really nice in this... I love the expression here

I wanna doodle JuAli again soon so I'll probably doodle something quick sometime this week!

The other thing I have to say in response to this is that Judar's "threats" towards Alibaba on the Dark Continent are really so empty lmao. As Cinna said, he's the type where he'll try to kill you (due to his bratty, spoiled, childish, violent tendencies) but it's usually not genuine, vehement hate

On the Dark Continent he doesn't even do anything violent to him. Lmaoooo.

Judar who threatens Alibaba like "How does he act so unfazed, I want to kill him!" And Alibaba is just like "I can hear you, you know…" And Alibaba is actually patient and understanding and humble, so he works incredibly well with someone like Judar

C: Judar comes off as an immature tantrum throwing baby but with severely violent tendencies so I can imagine Alibaba learns to be like "Ok I love you too" about it LMAO

Yeah I agree with this like Judar acts spoiled and bratty and violent and aggressive, so I think Alibaba will come to accept and get used to Judar's shenanigans LMAO

And yea Alibaba being the calm sort of protag makes him more shippable, especially since he actually has a personality despite representing the typically flattest type of shonen protag

Like most shounen protags (and calm personality shounen protags) are bland af but Alibaba is actually really good and well-written

And that makes him more shippable (See: how I have issues with Tsuna (KHR)'s character flaws affecting his ships in unsexy ways, even if I casually like the ships)

So I just focus on my KHR AU ships with my Canon/OC ships instead

Me: I could ramble about this but JuAli genuinely fixed issues that my previous (other) fandom ships like EnNetsu (Enzan/Netto) (Mega Man Battle Network) and HoroRen (Horohoro/Ren) (Shaman King)

Like with EnNetsu and HoroRen, BOTH charas are stubborn and unyielding and would constantly butt heads with each other

But JuAli as a ship has more warmth and companionship imo so this one's the best to me (and Alibaba's calm and kind, patient, humble personality balances out Judar's personality and makes them work well together as a ship)

With how Mukuro (KHR) wanted to possess and control and take over Tsuna's body to hyperkill the mafia in response to his traumas (He was used as a labrat experiment by his own mafia family)

Me: Well I'm gonna show the EN fan-TL cuz I prefer the prose and get more context (including of individual characters' speech styles/quirks) from the lines imo

Cuz Istg Viz absolutely butchers individual characters' speech styles in their TLs and makes everyone sound the same

And it doesn't help that English sounds so samey compared to other languages. EA/SEA languages have such huge variations in speaking styles

Like in JP, characters' speech patterns automatically give you the vibe of someone who talks more curt~ish/rough/masc (like Judar) or uses more polite speech, or is formal/humble, etc.

God guys just know that I usually HATE the shounen protag trope

Like I always prefer antagonists and deuteragonists (protag's side allies and secondary charas) but my and my friend circle's love for Alibaba is just a testament to how good (well-written) he is

Alibaba you're one of the few only shounen protags I'll defend with my life

Most shounen protags piss me off, so I always prefer deuteragonists and antagonists lmao

Something about their moral hypocrisy, their nepotism, their naive self-righteousness that fails to account for others, the way they're never (or hardly ever) challenged in meaningful ways in the narrative, how they always win fights and get what they want without any struggle, etc. It's all so. Boring.

One of the worst examples I can think of with this is Shaman King

Also, DBZ, Bleach, Naruto, etc.

Lumen said this, but, Alibaba is so goated as a protag BECAUSE he's so challenged.

His character development/growth, his big heart and empathy, and his humbleness (his humbleness is especially evident like in the scenes with Judar, post-Kou Empire arc fights)
