#also i have so many thoughts on the golden weapons in general so id need to figure out what i want for my rewrite + how itd affect s3
I just finished rewatching s3 so I’m making a post abt s3 related hcs/rewrites bc I can use tags to sort stuff on tumblr
- Pixal and Zane are siblings :)
Zane sees Pixal at the start of the season + is like “:O!! You’re also!! You!! Are like me!! We are siblings now I don’t make the rules :)” and Pixal is confused bc they were made by 2 different people how are they siblings
As the season progresses instead of romantic feelings developing it’s sibling feelings. They are siblings real and true Pixal told me xerself
- the love triangle is not a thing Cole’s been out as gay since s1. He likes men
But idk if maybe Nya realizes she isn’t attracted to men in s3 or if she already knows..
- Kai has braces during s3
- in between s2 + s3 Lloyd visits his parents at Garmadon’s monastery on weekends + when he has the free time
- Kai has aphantasia
- Pixal + Zane are the same height. After Zane gets his titanium body post-s3 he’s 2 inches taller than he was. When Pixal rebuilds her body she makes herself 5 inches taller (taller than everyone else)
- part of why the ninja were having a hard time as teachers is bc they’re literally 15. They should be in school learning, not teaching
- since Wu’s Academy or whatever it was called had girls + boys that supports my hc that actually it’s Darkley’s Boarding School For Bad Kids and not Darkley’s Boarding School For Bad Boys
Evil people can have children of any gender just like anyone else
- in s2 the ninja didn’t lose their elemental powers, they just got new swords
Therefore in s3 they had their elemental powers the whole time. Lloyd still shares his golden power so that he’s not a target for the Overlord
- when Nya steps on the one machine + the students are like “I bet your perfect match is Jay!” it takes an odd amount of time to load + then it glitches out
The reason is bc Pixal is connected to everything in Borg Tower to at least some extent and when she notices the machine processing Nya’s true match xe makes it glitch out (bc it was gonna say Pixal + Pixal thinks there must be an error in the system bc that can’t be right)
- Zane doesn’t give Pixal half his heart, just part of it. As far as they know his power source is infinite (until they’re in space + he’s like “turns out my power source is finite bc I’m running out of power, guys”) so there’s no reason to give a whole entire half
Also he can still do spinjitzu on his own

[QZGS TL] Butterfly Blue’s interview regarding the movie For the Glory (08/15/19)
Because the movie was released (and English subbed) online fairly recently, I thought I’d go back and translate this interview that BB did about it. It’s pretty long, but quite interesting! (As always, please let me know of any errors.)

https ://www.bilibili. com/video/av63863201/
Q: As this is the first movie of TKA, how did you choose the topic?
A: We’ve already done a donghua, which already covers the plot of the main novel, so when we were picking the subject of the movie, we didn’t want to repeat a story that we’ve already told. I’d written some side stories [i.e. the prequel] earlier, which fills in a few stories of our characters during the ten years before the main story starts. So, we wanted to use the movie medium to help fill in the early stories or whatnot of our characters, so everyone can have a better understanding of these characters. Especially for people who might be curious about The King’s Avatar, or who might not have even heard of it before – if they watch our movie first, they’ll start from the very beginning and watch as these youths, with Ye Xiu as the focus, grow.
Q: When you were writing TKA, had you ever thought about Excellent Era’s Season 1 roster?
A: Of the characters, only one was mentioned in the novel, that’s Wu Xuefeng, who was a most reliable helper at Ye Xiu’s side during the first years he won those championships. As for the others, in terms of characters, I hadn’t really thought about them when I was writing the main novel, because by that time in the story they’d all retired or they weren’t relevant to our main plot. But back then, because they were a team, players on a team all had their own accounts, and everyone’s accounts had a class. The classes were actually always maintained, Excellent Era had always passed them down. So, when we were making this movie, we maintained all of this. That is, every original character in the movie, the accounts they used, you’ll find that those IDs appear in the main novel – Excellent Era’s Elementalist, Spellblade, etc, they are all these same account IDs.
Q: Why was the first user of Peaceful Hermit changed from Guo Mingyu to Lu Liang?
A: Oh, this is a bit awkward. While I was writing, I forgot, the one who I initially had – well I forget which it was but – anyway, I wrote two different first-generation users, so basically it was actually a mistake in writing, a bug. Then, in the movie, they helped me patch it up, so by using a plot point they were able to fix this mistake in the original that I could no longer go back and change myself, they were able to cover my error. So, we have two users, and between them they have a relationship of partnership and inheritance.
Q: Given that we already know that Excellent Era wins the Season 1 championship, how does the movie make matches more interesting and exciting?
A: For this, we basically started from Excellent Era’s opponents at the time, Royal Style as a team. Following the original work, Ye Xiu had met a few friends in-game, and then under the support of an internet café boss, the eventual boss of Excellent Era, Tao Xuan, they formed a team. Their team was fairly grassroots. But we considered the world background as a whole, and Glory definitely wasn’t the only game, nor the only competitive esport. So under our understanding, in this profession, there are a number of professional teams, but Ye Xiu and the others aren’t a part of all this. In contrast, Royal Style is a professional team, but at the start, Glory wasn’t one of the games they played professionally. But after the Glory Pro League was established, the professional club Royal Style decided to create this kind of team to play in the Glory Pro League. So, compared to Ye Xiu and co’s background, Royal Style is more “professional,” more advanced along the professional path, they have professional systems or training methods, that’s the kind of team they are. And then, compared to Ye Xiu and the rest of them, Royal Style might be more cohesive, more powerful, with better training and logistical support backing them up. We hope that Ye Xiu can encounter such a powerful foe, so everyone can see how Ye Xiu was able to stand upon the summit of Glory in Season 1.
Q: When Ye Qiu gave the mask to Ye Xiu, was that because something changed about his attitude?
A: From the fact that he brought the mask prepared to give to him, we can see that Ye Qiu’s attitude didn’t actually change. In their hearts, the two brothers understand each other. Ye Qiu knew that even if he came over here to find his brother, there was no way he would be able to bring his older brother back. So when he said you should go home etc etc, that was more just fulfilling his duties as the younger brother, or like this is a job the family gave me, but after he did that he immediately gave him the mask; he knew things would end up like this, there’s no way you’re coming back. But he also knew where his older brother’s qualms lay, or the things that would be inconvenient for him, so this mask demonstrates his understanding of and consideration toward Ye Xiu.
Q: What was the biggest pleasant surprise of this movie for you?
A: For me, the biggest surprise was this one scene – so after Su Muqiu died, he left his account card to Su Mucheng, and during this time Su Mucheng was feeling very downhearted, and she kind of rejected this game. But then one day, she took this account card that her brother left her, and when she logged on, Dancing Rain’s avatar appeared, and the avatar said to her, something like, “did you miss me? I’m always here.” That moment was the most moving part of the movie for me, because when we were making this movie, we were really trying to let it have more positive energy, so we tried to focus on the esports and competitive spirit side of things. But in this moment, I saw the significance that ordinary games have in our lives. It doesn’t have to do with dreams or fighting spirit, but they enter our lives and bring to you thoughts and memories.
Q: Say something to the TKA fans on Bilibili!
A: The fans on Bilibili are probably mostly those who watched the donghua, right, so I feel that, come watch our movie as well, see if you like it. Thank you everyone for your support all this time.
(reading Weibo posts)
“2019 June 16, I wrote down in my planner that on August 16 I had to go to the movie theater. 2019 July 16, I tragically received notice that my school’s military training was on August 16…”
Well, August 16 is just the release date, we’ll be in theaters for a while after, you can just go later haha
“I saw Tao Xuan in the trailer. At that time, they were all going to the pro circle for their dreams, for their own Glory!! And now, Excellent Era’s things are still here but the people are no more…”
This user is sighing emotionally about Tao Xuan. But even if Tao Xuan changed later, earning money is still a dream, we can’t think that just because of this he’s all that… it’s just that the road he took is different from Ye Xiu’s.
“Guo Mingyu, you think that just by changing your name you can get away from your debt?”
[laughing] That’s my mistake!
“Zhang Jiale perfectly avoided all chances of appearance.”
He actually does appear, everyone look closely!
“This TKA movie you speak of, is it a good watch?” [bb misspeaks at first lol: “quan zhi dian ying gao shou,” all-class movie expert]
Of course it’s good, you’ll know when you see it!
Q: Why does Ye Xiu go on morning runs in the movie?
Probably because we still wanted to have a movie with more positive energy, let him maintain a relatively healthy physical condition. After all, by the time we see him in the main novel he’s a 25-year-old player, and by the time he wins the championship again he’s already 27-28. For an esports player, that’s extremely old, but even at such an old age he could still maintain that good of a competitive condition. If we wrote that off as natural gift, that doesn’t seem very suitable, so when we were writing this prequel, we wanted to have an explanation for why even when Ye Xiu became so old and many people had already retired, he could maintain such a high competitive skill level. It’s because he had a foundation in taking care of his body.
Q: Why was Su Muqiu so focused on self-made weapons?
A: Because he relied on gaming to raise his little sister, his family, so in my original design, the most fundamental reason he focused on Silver weapons was that it was profitable. He needed greater income or whatnot, so after he discovered that this game had these Silver weapons, his thoughts would go in that direction. Because we have a saying in-universe, “the strongest weapons are Silver weapons,” so this had the greatest utility for him, it was a very down-to-earth judgment, it was an opportunity that would provide the greatest payoff, so he put a lot of effort into this area. To be honest, I feel like his goals are almost a level above the later dreams and “for the championship,” because he was doing this for existence, for life, for his home, for his little sister. So, when he’s going all out for this, it’s closer to our real lives, closer to an ordinary person’s attitude.
Q: Why does One Autumn Leaf get long golden hair in the trailer?
A: That was his Awakening skill during the finals match. In the novel, we can use words to describe how awesome something is, but this kind of scene in an animation, we want to visually show a character transformation, something that will immediately make people know, “the One Autumn Leaf in this moment is stronger,” let everyone perceive this feeling more directly. So, we made him enter this long golden hair, cooler and more dazzling state.
Q: When Ye Xiu was still the little captain, what was his guiding principle for leading Excellent Era?
A: This is actually the story we tell in the movie, how he led the team in the beginning, and then how he established those “golden phrases” or “fundamental creeds,” of his, such as what might be his most famous “Glory isn’t a single-player game,” in the movie we can see how this statement became Ye Xiu’s core spirit. And then in the finals, we use that kind of battle to show how his teammates supported him until the very end, how he relied upon the help of every one of his teammates to defeat the opposing Royal Style, which was a powerful team with top-level pro players.
Q: What function did Wu Xuefeng serve in the team, as Excellent Era’s vice-captain?
A: Mm, to me, Wu Xuefeng this person, he’s a bit older than Ye Xiu and the others. When Ye Xiu became the little captain, he was barely an adult, only 18 years old, and in comparison, Wu Xuefeng was more mature, more stable. On the team at the time, I feel that he was in a steadier condition than Ye Xiu was. At that time, Ye Xiu was still young, he could be impulsive, he could be volatile. But Wu Xuefeng, at his side, was a very reliable character, he was the godly needle that stabilized the ocean [i.e. in Journey to the West, the pillar in the ocean that Sun Wukong took to serve as his iconic weapon]. Whenever problems appeared in the team, he would be the one mediating, he would be more rational, he would be a more balanced and steady character. I feel that he was a very good vice-captain at the time. Ye Xiu’s most reliable helper, that was how we defined him.
Q: What was the turning point for Ye Xiu when he decided he wanted to become a pro player?
A: Well, first, when he left home, he didn’t have a very clear goal in mind. His family didn’t want him to play games, so he wanted to come out and play some games. And then he met Su Muqiu and Su Mucheng, and they were together for a while. At first, I feel like his life state was pretty similar to Su Muqiu’s, he would just do some power-leveling or some other very ordinary things just to earn a living, he didn’t have a clear plan. But the turning point was when Glory this game appeared, it was like Su Muqiu discovering Silver weapons in this game. After seeing the complexity of this game, how widespread it was, the things that this game was establishing, as well as his own ability and skill with this game, I feel that it was a gradual, step-by-step process and he decided, or wanted to try, “can I become a pro player.” And he had partners beside him, partners like Su Muqiu, and his boss at the time Tao Xuan, and a few good friends in-game, and everyone began to come together on this tide, this opportunity was here, and so with everyone he successfully stepped onto this road – and never looked back.

introducing bee sinclair…
⌠ SAOIRSE RONAN, 22, CISFEMALE, SHE/HER ⌡ welcome back to gallagher academy, BEATRICE “BEE” SINCLAIR! according to their records, they’re a FOURTH year, specializing in RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT; and they DID go to a spy prep high school. when i see them walking around in the halls, i usually see a flash of ( jasmine scented oils, soft fairisle knitted jumpers & a bag of peppermints being offered out ). when it’s the (gemini)’s birthday on 13/06/1997, they always request their LEMON DRIZZLE CAKE from the school’s chefs. looks like they’re well on their way to graduation. ⌿ jess, 21, she/her, gmt ⍀
beatrice sinclair was blessed with the happiest of childhoods. if you ask her about it now, she will recall long, golden days in various european cities, sprawled on the floor of one of her father’s chain of luxury hotels with a book, laughing with staff in a language she didn’t understand in the backrooms, bouncing on pristine hotel beds. she was an easy-going, friendly kid - she loved other people, new places, she loved school (even though she had temporary places at various english-language schools throughout the years, never able to stay anywhere very long). she’d never really thought too hard about her mother’s job. bee knew she worked for the european government, that she had to be away often - she never dreamed someone as unassuming as emma sinclair could be a SPY.
on her eleventh birthday, bee’s parents sat her down to explain her mother’s real job, and to offer her a place at spy prep school in london. though they insisted she didn’t have to take the place, bee could see it was what her mother wanted - so she said yes, even if she couldn’t imagine herself ever doing anything like that.
prep school was difficult - the girls weren’t always kind, the competition was fierce and the classes were difficult. bee had enjoying normal school better, but she would never admit it to her parents, who talked constantly about how proud they were of her. her mother was so excited to enrol bee at gallagher, her alma mater, that bee never had the heart to tell her about the doubts she was having.
at the end of her first year at gallagher, bee was told that she would probably never be good enough to be a field agent. for many, this might have been devastating news, but bee was completely relieved. she was clumsy, her limbs out of control. she’d been struggling to keep up with the physical side of life at gallagher since day one: accidentally injuring herself and others with weapons, crashing her first car, lagging behind in team exercises. she knew she was a liability. research & development was the only class she excelled in - and boy, did she excel.
bee has a talent for developing believable personas, which prove invaluable for field agents - her research skills are rigorous and she is brilliant at bringing together plausible disguises. she’s thorough in creating impenetrable backstories. she also great in field agent’s ears, a formidable team player, surveying threats from the control room, gathering all the information she can in the moment. most importantly, she has the ability to remain completely calm and collected in moments of crisis, to always see the clearest solution to a problem in a heartbeat. she has great instincts and can often anticipate what people need from her before they even realise it themselves. she is brilliantly observational - with a keen eye to details.
she’s a warm, generous friend, quick to offer a hand. she sees things more than most, pays more attention to others, is more patient than most people deserve. she provides refuge for lots of her classmates, both literally (a place to stay with no questions asked during the breaks) and emotionally (she’s the sort of person who you can just sit in complete silence with, or tell all of your secrets). she struggles a bit with huge crowds of people, being much better one on one.
wanted connections (inspired by bee’s fave joni mitchell album of course) :
COURT & SPARK:
It seemed like [THEY] read my mind / [THEY] saw me mistrusting [THEM] / And still acting kind / [THEY] saw how I worried sometimes / I worry sometimes ...
an unlikely new friend or potential love interest that bee is still unsure of - maybe they are Trouble, or just too cool to hang out with Bee - a “why are they even interested in talking to me?” kind of deal.
HELP ME:
And you love your lovin' / But not like you love your freedom ...
a mutual flirtationship that never goes anywhere - always on the cusp of something more - always stopped by the fact that they are such good friends. “if we haven’t found someone else in ten years lets just get married” kind of love.
FREE MAN IN PARIS:
There's a lot of people asking for my time / They're trying to get ahead / They're trying to be a good friend of mine ...
bee has a lot of skills (fake ids, code-breaking, finding people who don’t want to be found, creating disguises) that might be helpful to other students - maybe she’s doing them a favour, but what does she get in return?
PEOPLE’S PARTIES:
All the people at this party / They've got a lot of style / They've got stamps of many countries / They've got passport smiles ...
fellow awkward souls hanging out on the edge of the party/trailing behind the rest of the group, bee and this character always keep an eye out for each other
THE SAME SITUATION:
You want me to be truthful / Sometimes you turn it on me like a weapon though / And I need your approval ...
kindred souls! maybe these guys share the same major, or a similar past? either way they would bond / have bonded over shared experiences? maybe they when to the same spy prep school in london (which will have been co-ed)?
CAR ON A HILL:
I've been waiting for [THEIR] car on the hill / [THEY] makes friends easy / [THEY’RE] not like me / I watch for judgement anxiously ...
more unlikely friends! kind of like ‘we go for long drives/long walks together to destress and we talk about all kinds of deep things but no one in college would think we knew each other barely at all’.
DOWN TO YOU:
Everything comes and goes / Marked by lovers and styles of clothes / Things that you held high / And told yourself were true / Lost or changing as the days come down to you ...
best friends! maybe since spy prep - maybe since your character started gallagher - these two will have become real adults together, through thick and thin, and they know everything about each other, making them the ultimate dream team!
JUST LIKE THIS TRAIN:
Dreaming of the pleasure I'm going to have / Watching your hairline recede / My vain darling...
enemies or rivals! bee would struggle with people with superiority complexes or those who look down on research & development stuff as less important than field work!
RAISED ON ROBBERY:
[THEY] was sitting in the lounge of the Empire Hotel / [THEY WERE] drinking for diversion / [THEY WERE] thinking for [THEIR] self ...
childhood friends! before this whole spy business your character’s [realistically probably rich or spy legacy] family were regulars at bee’s dad’s hotel chain or friends of her mother’s and these guys spent fun summers together back in the day!
TROUBLE CHILD:
Well some are going to knock you / And some'll try to clock you / You know it's really hard / To talk sense to you / Trouble child ...
someone younger than bee who she has taken under her wing! maybe they are Difficult and she is trying to Kill them with Kindness or maybe they are struggling like she did with the physical side of their majors!
obviously i am open to absolutely anything so drop me a message! these are just some ideas! like this and i will message you!

We get a scene with

This could’ve been a good scene about Luminara getting slapped in the face with the things she’s enabling
And
Asoka
not

The harm
in her robotic
automated

And that considering
Asoka and Anakin are both under 22
The fact that she can technically

Rebutting Civic Nationalism
Rebutting Civic Nationalism
While conservatives of yore sought to combat the very real and very significant threat of communism, they failed to notice two things: one, that its practitioners had also colonized their own countries, and two, who, exactly, was behind the introduction of these spores of communism. While the West ultimately triumphed over the USSR, it may be the ghosts of Lenin and company have the last laugh. In many ways, life in the West is worse than it was in the Eastern Bloc. Such a comparison may seem laughable—we have plenty of stuff after all—but advance just one unpopular opinion about race, sex, and the like and watch what happens to your gainful employment, your placid home life, and your ability to even cash a check. The totalitarianism is more sinister precisely because it is more covert and because it is more invasive. Don’t like it? Build your own platform.
(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10817585113717094,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-7788-6480"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//cdn2.lockerdomecdn.com/_js/ajs.js";j.id=i;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");
Whilst Baby Boomers were sold a bill of goods regarding “the content of our character,” Generation X was treated to the cognitive dissonance of merit-based race-blindness and the notice-but-disregard quirks of post-racialism; in an interesting twist, culturally, for a brief period in the 1990s, they actually almost got the formula right, but continued mass immigration and the ascendance of anti-Western ideologies continued to rush headlong toward the Barack Obama boiling point, where, quoting from Mark Point’s brilliant essay at American Thinker, “Racism on the Rise”:
Millennials were taught from childhood that the highest moral good was serving the self-esteem of non-Whites… According to the implicit demands of the experiment, Whites and by extension what could be perceived as “White culture” was selected for strategic downsizing… It’s unsurprising that when Whites were encouraged to jettison the exigencies of tradition in favor of debasing themselves, that we ended up with an entire class of people now lost in the wilderness without past or future. Over the past thirty years, conservatives were busy building an entire culture around anti-socialism while the Left was busy pushing its cultural trojan horse to unleash a whole different kind of plague.
Though there is essentially no difference between the presidencies of George W. Bush and Barack Obama in effect, the clear division is in the former’s final exhaustion of Ronald Reagan’s “moral majority” and the latter’s at-times antagonistic relationship toward Israel. Let’s be clear about something, though: they essentially served the same master as two sides of the same coin.
There are not two Americas. There is one America—ours—and the Tower of Babel-esque post-liberalist hellscape of the future that looks like the Golden Triangle in the remnants of Pittsburgh in George A. Romero’s Land of the Dead. Nevertheless, too many Americans have deluded themselves into thinking that voluntarily abasing themselves and their culture will somehow lead to unity, especially as they themselves accept the mantle of cultural and racial whipping-posts. This can only lead to contempt from the other races, for though Francis Fukuyama and his ilk decided that the fall of the USSR meant “the end of history,” it was only Western liberals who bought into such a premise fully. Unfortunately, though, conservatives, so fixated on defeating the Reds, had missed the deep rot setting in their own culture while they vicariously fought Ivan Drago. They’re now fighting ghosts. Returning to Point:
Indeed, it's nice that wrangler-wearing boomers have had their war paint ready to conserve their nest egg from the perennial specter of Soviet-style economics. Railing against socialized medicine and magazine limits is not without its merit, but for the sake of their grandchildren maybe they’d like to also counter the forces that seek to degrade Whites and for the first time in 2,000 years, permanently disconnect culture associated with them. Is it not obvious that every group on the planet both within and outside the West is encouraged to embrace the legacy of their ancestors except for Whites?... Don’t expect the Japanese or Chinese to do anything but look in amazement and take notes as Ford F150 ten-gallon hat types indignantly yell “out of my cold dead hands!” meanwhile their granddaughter is likely to spend the same twilight years in a very dangerous world because her grandfather was too worried about his bumpstock or the return of Fidel Castro to take a stand against the toppling of his ancestors and the deracination of his heirs. If conservatives were half as serious about combatting anti-White racism as they are about their guns, the wall would have been built 30 years ago and Mr. “It’s in our DNA” Obama would have never been elected to anything but a tribal warlord.
90% of Blacks, 80% of Jews, 77% of Asians, and 69% of Hispanics voted Democrat in the 2018 mid-term elections; these overwhelming percentages voted for the present radical, anti-White iteration of the Democrat Party. Using CNN’s exit polling data, 79% of the respondents who answered that electing more racial and ethnic minorities was “very important” were Democrats. 87% of respondents who felt that Whites were favored in society today were Democrats as opposed to 69% of the Republicans who felt that no group is favored. This is depressing on two fronts: one, a whole lot of Republicans, mostly Whites, either have their heads in the sand or are so deeply marinated in post-“Civil Rights” propaganda that they refused to see the reality playing itself out before them, and two, that most Democrats are just as delusional in feeling that Whites, with all of the venom and anti-White policies directed at them, are somehow a privileged group.
(function(w,d,s,i){w.ldAdInit=w.ldAdInit||[];w.ldAdInit.push({slot:10817587730962790,size:[0, 0],id:"ld-5979-7226"});if(!d.getElementById(i)){var j=d.createElement(s),p=d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0];j.async=true;j.src="//cdn2.lockerdomecdn.com/_js/ajs.js";j.id=i;p.parentNode.insertBefore(j,p);}})(window,document,"script","ld-ajs");
“All cultures are created equal except your own,” we are told, except yours. And while this is true, it is framed in the opposite. Europeans and the European Diaspora are responsible for 97% of all human achievement and innovations, notions of human rights and democracy (which are now being weaponized against us), and the eradication of many diseases as well as the minimization of the effects of famine. As election after election has proven, non-Whites do not, and will not, ever, in any appreciable numbers value the same things that we do. They do not vote Republican (and let’s be honest, it’s not like all Republicans are worth voting for), but rather hew toward the “liberal” Democrats—“liberal” in this instance meaning genocidal totalitarians who literally threaten to use nuclear weapons against their own people who refuse to turn their guns over to the federal government. This is not hyperbole: they want you dead. Eradicated. Erased. Point asks:
So where have three decades of feverish placation and encouraging our sons and daughters to take a backseat landed us? Statue toppling, knock out games, self-self-segregated graduations, implicit this, privilege that, people being fired for thought-crimes, higher taxes on struggling families to subsidized race-based transfers, racialized comic book warriors, real historical heroes defaced with graffiti, suppressed speech, our national anthem undermined, and an endless torrent of millions of new immigrants adding more complexity to a difficult situation… Your daughter’s daffy feminism, the lionization of increasingly bizarre sexual anomalies, the undying dream of economic collectivism and Christophobia are all skirmishes that need managing but America is becoming dangerously anti-White at a time when with the world’s only White-majority societies are becoming White-minority.
Americans (to quote Revilo P. Oliver, “When I use that word, I mean Americans, descendants, and heirs of the creators of the Western world; I do not mean all featherless bipeds that, ‘regardless of race, color, or creed,’ happen to be on our soil at the present time”) and their Western kin must decide what kind of nation—if one at all—they want moving forward.

A Constructive Guide to Up-Skilling in 2018
For years now, I’ve spent a lot of time trying to figure out the best way to go about investing in myself.
As an individual focused and working professionally in the tech industry, up-skilling is part of the territory. In fact, it’s so essential to our careers that it’s very much a “survive or die” scenario. Everyday there are new frameworks, syntax, libraries and methodologies being introduced. This very fact requires you to be disciplined, to be strategic and to manage your time responsibly.
For some reason we tend to think that the more we work ourselves into the ground the more we will absorb
In general, people tend to think in black and white rather than shades of grey. We’re not used to thinking outside the box, being smart with our time, or equating our effort with our current energy levels. For some reason we tend to think that the more we work ourselves into the ground the more we will absorb.
In order to solve the up-skilling predicament, we need, in the famous words of Steven Hawkins: “a simple, elegant equation” in order to gain control of our most important value: Consistency.
Consistency in our modern day world is on the verge of extinction. When was the last time you had 3 days in the row that were the same? When was the last time you were distracted at the same time every day? Our bodies and lives are in a constant, relentless turmoil. The mere fact of saying to yourself: “Hey, I’m going to study Javascript for an hour a day” is a bigger commitment than we realise, and we often let ourselves down due to poor planning and over /under-estimation. That golden hour is sometimes just as unreachable and overwhelming as the thought of becoming 100% proficient in Javascript (especially when you’re just starting out).
Be Protective of Your Time
This point is a difficult one, but if you can succeed with it you will be able to gain that hour a day you need. There’s a concept of time-blocking which erupted onto the internet some time ago which is very interesting.
On your calendar, you block out everything. Be it lunch, up-skilling time, going to gym etc. With so many things fighting for our attention, protecting your time is a hard discipline, however, once you get it right you’ll learn that your time is actually yours.
Take a look at my calendar:
The blue events in my calendar are time-blocked. You’ll see that I’ve left 15 minutes on either side to adjust / cope with life. We’re not robots, so we need time on either side of our activities to be human (take the remote away from your puppy, go to the toilet etc) blocks can be replaced as you can see in my social calendar, I’m going out for dinner with friends on Thursday, from 16:00 – 17:00 is my study time, and its part of my working hours. I’ve left 17H00-18H00 completely empty to allow me some space in my day to adjust to any unforeseen.
Maybe I need to finish a piece of work or do some admin, it’s time that can be interrupted that I’m not precious about. I try lead an incredibly balanced day. You may notice that I’ve blocked off time for lunch and breakfast as well. I use this time to chill out a bit, catch up on news, or whatever I feel like doing that day.

Time Blocking — The Secret Weapon For Better Focus
Bigger isn’t Better
Our society and culture is big on big.
Great things are done by a series of smalls things brought together.
~ Vincent Van Gogh
We let go of small. Small isn’t good enough, but small is incredibly powerful for a number of reasons. It allows us a much tighter grip on consistency. The number one key point that you could take out of this article is that smaller is almost always better and more effective in achieving larger goals.
smaller is almost always better
At work, I develop large scale websites. Over the last few months, a lot of sites have moved over to using React. There was some major upskilling required in order for me to do this. I’ve spent the last 6 months, debating about what framework I should even consider learning (Vue, React, Angular, Ember, Backbone, Preact) – the list goes on for a while…
I’m relatively well-versed in JavaScript, as I work with it a ton everyday on nearly every single project I’m tasked to. React appeared as a big mountain to me. It involved some very dedicated time to understand ES6, Object-Orientated JavaScript and above all else, the framework itself, which as much as its been labelled as one of the easier frameworks to understand, its not to be taken for granted or underestimated.
So how did I tackle it? As I’ll explain in the next section the act of learning, is not just about writing code. Reading (technical documents as well as opinion pieces) and asking questions to people who know more than me, is where the real learning happens. It’s kind of like learning to drive. When you get your license, we all know you can drive a car, but when you’re actually driving by yourself around your city, that’s when you truly learn to drive. It’s the same with technology. We need to spend a lot of time understanding, absorbing and clearing up misconceptions before we can be allowed to build by ourselves.
Some days I’d spend an hour reading Medium articles about React. That’s where you find the golden bits, you learn from people who have already made the mistakes you will probably make. Sometimes I read the documentation of React. Technically it’s great and gives you a good high level understanding of the framework. Other days I’d dive into code, get a feel for the framework, the errors I encountered, I would ask when I didn’t understand and repeated the same functionality in multiple ways until I felt like I had produced something of standard.
When did I do this? Well, I blocked my hour off in my calendar. I turned off my cellphone, closed my email, my Slack, my browser tabs, put on some classical music on Spotify with some noise cancelling headphones and got into the mode. For me, an hour was just right, it was manageable and even movable around my day and I protected it with all that I could with just one mantra: “After this hour, I want to have learnt one, constructive, useful thing, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant”. Whether that was from reading an article about React architecture or developing my own component with ES6. It didn’t matter.
Bite sized chunks is all you need.
As I build up this picture you may begin to start to understand that I’m not trying to assimilate the entire React framework in a week.
Bite sized chunks is all you need.
Learn How To Learn
“Learning” is a word that has become very meaningless of late. You can’t learn with Facebook open, or with WhatsApp pinging you about plans for the weekend. Your mind is not good at staying focused and the 21st century doesn’t help. I struggle to stay focused just as much as the next person. That being said, you can adjust your behaviour and habits to benefit your learning.
We’ve spoken about protecting your time, for an hour a day, but what about protecting your mind? You need an incognito mode for your brain sometimes.
It requires a little bit of growing up on your part. Leave your phone alone, close Facebook, this is the time you are protecting to get something worthwhile. You don’t need to be connected with everyone in your life while you do it, you just need to focus on the website, IDE or tutorial you are viewing, using or attempting. You’d be surprised and quite possibly horrified the first time you put your mind to this. You’ll start to see just how productive you are with a little self-discipline instead of procrastinating about it. The time you spent distracted trying to understand Redux may take you half the time when you’re focused on absorbing what other people are trying to get through to you.
Iterate, Iterate, Iterate
Most of our giant failures in life is due to the fact that we give up. We take on tasks that are too big to iterate on, in order to achieve some misguided sense of success. Iteration is key. Some people are naturally gifted learners, others need it drilled into them a few times before the coin drops.
If we go back to our React example, React State is really something that I’ve been trying to understand in its entirety. When you read the documentation on the React website its a seemingly simple concept to grasp. However, when you jump into the code it becomes more elusive than it originally lead on. It’s a far fetch to be able to state (no pun intended) that I would/could have fully understood State just by reading the docs. I needed to spend many hours iterating over the concept. Reading, asking, trying, reading, trying, failing, succeeding, failing some more and reading again.
Our learning behaviour patterns aren’t linear, in other words, they don’t look like this:
They look like this:
Iterating over smaller tasks becomes manageable but also rewarding as your chances of ascertaining that knowledge becomes a lot more in your favor compared to trying to understand the Go programming language in a week.
Building Our Equation
So what does our equation look like? Lets consider:
Our productivity at the end of the day is going to be a combination of how our focus compounds the small tasks that we want to perform as well as how we perform them, multiplied by our iterations. In other words, we can iterate a 100 times over, with small, achievable tasks that we can focus on and perform in the correct way. This will eventually build up to a large goal, like being proficient in React, or whatever that may be for you. By performing this process, an hour becomes incredibly useful each day. It does require some planning beforehand so make sure to factor that in.
Here’s a look at my schedule for a week in January for self-investment:
As you can see, my goal is to become more proficient at React. I’ve dedicated myself to achievable tasks that I know with my current energy levels, obedience and discipline I can achieve if I put my mind to it. The great thing about this? Not only does your mind respond so well to the way that you are approaching your up-skilling it simultaneously sustains confidence, reward and gratification. Even better, because this technique is so scalable, in 12 months you’d be incredibly surprised at how easy it becomes for you to pick up concepts and apply them. Not to mention your new found knowledge of web technologies.
