Update time...actually, why should these be titled? I mean, whats the point of writing a title to these if all I’m going to do is ramble on and on with no specific topic of discussion, just several things on my mind?

Election day 2020 happened yesterday and I voted for nobody. And if I would have voiced my polling choice I would have voted for the candidate I see as being the best option in line with my thoughts and opinions concerning the state of the world at the moment as well as the future.

You can insert whomever you want to believe that would be based off an assumption and a look at my internetting footprint, but you would be wrong, but that’s part of the fun of interpreting what I’m writing down for you in the future. Trying to figure out what I’m actually saying. While it makes complete sense to me, because you don’t have the hidden key phrase you can’t decipher what it is that I am putting to digital paper.

I get it, I’m an asshole.

And this isn’t, completely, a justification towards my actions but a direct result of your intervention within my life that has caused this behaviour. Think of it sort of like a self-fulfilling prophecy. You interpreted me, came back, and intervened in any little way imaginable. Negatively or positively, but no matter your justification, it was still an intervention that didn’t need to happen because, as Malcolm once said, “Life, finds a way.” And just like destiny, it will find a way. But enough of all that crazy talk, you’re here because you want to hear all about my political leanings and to unravel the mystery as to this anonymous random on the internet’s preferred presidential choice in the election that has already passed.

But before I do that, let’s get some shit off my chest because I tend to swear and if you don’t like it, go the hell away. I’m sick of people being sensitive over everything. As if they’re looking for any reason to complain or get offended nowadays.

And that’s why I’ve chose not to be PC in this thing, whenever I feel the urge to put pen to paper, relatively speaking.

Like, let’s see who I can offend right off the bat.

Women need to start getting punched more and treated like human beings instead of china dolls. If you’re a pro-gender equality advocate, and you’re a woman, you need to be willing to be punched in the face for doing ANYTHING a man would otherwise be punched in the face for. They also need to be held accountable for the shit they do to everyone. I am a strong supporter in believing that no matter what women say about women controlling the government and such, while women have great communication skills, they have the worst track record when it comes to not being aggressive, biologically speaking.

In the wild, whom are normally the more aggressive of the genders? Whom is usually the one more protective of the young? more willing to go out to hunt?

To be fair, I have a very limited knowledge when it comes to the animal kingdom. But, I mean, the Black Widow is normally depicted as being a deadly female, the female preying mantis devours the head of her mate after they’re done mating. There are so many, example, of females being worse than males in nature its hard to ignore. And, to add religious believers to the list of people offended, if you’re not ignorant to science and knowledge, or at least the pursuit of it, we evolved over a long period of time from apes, which, by nature, makes us, humans, not white people, black people, yellow people(to stick to the color scheme), brown people(gotta throw the other Asian people’s in there as well), animals. Highly evolved and communicative animals, but animals none the less. Was that supposed to be one word? Nonetheless?

Doesn’t matter. So, if you stick with my logic, you’ll see that women are terrible. Terrible. But, because men like to have sex with females as opposed to men for the most part in today’s society women have a stranglehold on the pelvic reason of an entire world, which means they can make anyone, for the most part, do anything they want and see things their way, even if they’re saying the sky is as green as the skies of Namek. An example of this is perfectly laid out in a clip from That 70′s Show. Kelso and Hyde prove women can’t play fight because they’ll turn it real, for whatever reason, just because they’re girls. To prove this, Kelso and Hyde play fight, and it looks bad, but they stop, laugh, and hug it out. Then Jackie and Donna play fight, starting out playfully, but then turning it into hair pulling and needing to be pulled apart. Both visibly angry.

And I get it, they’re actors, being paid to do what the script is telling them to do, but it is true. Girls are worst during puberty as well, from what I’ve heard. And I get it, I have a biased standpoint being a male, but in today's culture that shouldn’t matter, it’s about what’s being said, not my gender.

Now that women are out of the way, lets also as black people, but not specifically black people, its more of a systemic form of racism that I believe shouldn’t exist. In which, if you are not of that specific race, you are not allowed to say the n-word. What makes me giggle right now is that with just that sentence every single person reading this probably got a bit riled up. A bit ruffled in the feathers because I’m not a black person. And if you weren’t, you are now, knowing what you know now.

So let me provide you with some context so you can understand how I’m not racist at the same time as saying what I said above.

I enjoy rap music and hip-hop, as do a lot of people throughout the world, black or otherwise. Which, in this current climate, would be considered one of the forms of cultural appropriation we tend to sweep under the rug because it doesn’t fit our narrative of being offended about something. Because I like rap music I tend to learn the word to all of the songs I enjoy listening to. Because I learn the words to the songs that I enjoy listening to I sing along. But, because I’m not black, I have to ruin my flow to edit myself just because the artist chose to use nigger in their song. Which, as an artist, is their choice.

Now, why should I have to edit myself? I have tried to replace it with “wigger”, but because of the closeness of the words, I felt that would still be offensive if I was ever overheard by the wrong black person who, understandably, would be mad if they heard a pasty white boy say the word nigger without any context.

I just think, unless the person is using the word in a hateful way, directed at the person the speaker either personally knows or is conciously speaking about, as in “i hate that nigger” or “you’re a nigger”. If it’s something like that, totally beat the shit out of that racist.

But if you’re singing along to Wu-Tang, and you say:

There is more rattling around in my head right now, things that I’ve been thinking about for years, and things that have been bothering me for just about as long, but for now those were the two that fell out when I vomited all over my keyboard.

And if you’re offended. Get over it. You need to start.

Oh, I almost forgot. I was going to tell you whom it was I was going to vote for yesterday if I had voted for anybody. Jokingly I wanted to write-in “Obi-Wan Kenobi”. But in truth I was going to vote for Biden. Not because I thought he was the better candidate, but because there was not a good option at all, he was just the lesser of two evils. This election has made me decide I want a third option when it comes to my politicians, or at least, get rid of political parties all together. We spend so much time infighting and holding each other back instead of up no real change has happened in the past decade? Longer? And whatever change that does happen gets nitpicked apart so much it becomes a shell of its former self. But, enough about that. I have a baby demanding eggs and waffles and I still need to tag this.

Part 3 of my meandering “Maximus and Fabian team-up to kidnap Luna” fanfic, based on the brilliant ideas of @thecorteztwins.  I’m afraid I didn’t manage to get them naked in front of a crowd, but they do have another kind of clothing mishap.

Apologies for Fabian’s vague homophobia, and for the ableist insults that some of the characters throw at Max. 

There were two things wrong in this situation as far as Fabian could tell.  

           One – Fabian and Maximus were in a department store with Luna, the child they had kidnapped, just twenty minutes after said kidnapping.  Maximus was making no attempt to blend in, and their change from coveralls into casual clothing presented a flimsy disguise at best.

           Two – Fabian and Maximus were in a department store with Luna, spending Fabian’s money.

           Luna, whom Fabian had previously known as such a sweet, quiet, well-behaved child, had pouted and whined and threatened tears if she were not plied with gifts.  Obviously her time among the royals of Attilan had entirely spoiled her, despite their extremely neglectful parenting styles.  So now they were spending valuable time that they really did not have, waiting for an eleven year-old girl to decide between T-shirts emblazoned with different pastel ponies.  And because Prince Maximus of Attilan was used to having all the finer things in life but never having to pay for them, it fell to Fabian to fund their little shopping trip.  Of course. Fabian’s family was descended from royalty as well, but he didn’t walk around with impractically empty pockets.  

           It wasn’t that Fabian didn’t have the money. He had moved his family’s considerable wealth into various untouchable accounts in the Cayman Islands and Switzerland, so that the police would not seize his assets over his little hobbies. He was doing it for his sister as well – Anne-Marie was too enraptured by the Acolytes’ cause to think about money, so Fabian, as the responsible and loving brother, had accounts set aside to take care of her.  (Well, one account.  A sizable amount.  It was all she needed, really, he’d manage the rest.)

           “This is not going to work,” Fabian hissed as Maximus took his arm and pulled him in disgustingly close.  He was not at all happy having the Inhuman who specialized in mind control, and who somehow always smelled like engine grease getting so touchy-feely.  He knew Max’s powers could also work from a distance, but still.  “We should just say that I’m her father, and you’re her uncle.”

           “I am her uncle, what’s the fun in that?  C’mon Cortez, role-play.  Get into the spirit of things.”

           “They’ll never believe,” Fabian insisted.  “I don’t look gay!”

           “I wasn’t aware that there was a specific look.” Maximus looked genuinely curious, not sarcastic, although it was often hard to tell.  “They don’t look any different in Attilan.  Are there physiological differences or is it just choices of fashion?”

           “It’s….it’s complicated,” Fabian said.  It wasn’t that Fabian had anything against gay men in particular.  He wasn’t like the petty-minded fools that bristled at the thought of another man finding them attractive.  It was only right and proper that gay men find Fabian attractive, just like everyone else did.  Fabian was attractive.  There was something tragically romantic at the thought of all the men who must surely pine after Fabian, their desires forever unfulfilled. He wouldn’t hold it against them. But he couldn’t quite imagine himself in that role.  The thought of certain acts made him uncomfortable.  

           “It’s not so complicated in Attilan.  You just ask.  Until the Council assigns you a spouse, it doesn’t matter.  And it usually doesn’t matter so much afterwards, either, as long as you are discreet.”  Maximus had been the one who thought it would be ever so amusing to pose as Luna’s same-sex parents, because apparently there was no such thing in Attilan. Same-sex relationships were accepted, but procreation and child-rearing was decided entirely at the whim of a council that determined genetic compatibility.  It sounded barbaric to Fabian, who would surely be mobbed by women seeking his superior genetic material.  No amount of polite refusal would do, they would fight for his favor – he would be exhausted and utterly milked dry after even a single day in Attilan.

           A jerk on his ponytail pulled Fabian out of that extremely pleasant reverie.    

           “Do try to keep your wits about you, Cortez, we are still in the middle of a caper, here.  Though I suppose the vapid expression does make you look appropriately non-threatening.”

           Fabian gritted his teeth, but said nothing. Some people were so utterly crass and entitled, especially unstable Inhuman princes.  It would be worth it in the end, when their plan granted Fabian the power he deserved, and then he’d find a tall building to push Maximus off of. He’d let Luna live, he wasn’t a monster, after all.    

Meanwhile, Luna had abandoned the pastel pony shirts, and was pawing through T-shirts featuring a group of handsome Asian teens, with BTS floating above their heads.  Fabian had no idea what “BTS” was, but based on the group’s bland prettiness, he guessed it must be some insipid boy band.  They were allowing Luna to browse without keeping a grip on her – Maximus had suggested that some Very Bad things would happen to the sales clerk if she tried to run or even wandered out of their sight.  Said clerk breezed right up to them, cheerfully unaware that Maximus would mentally force her to bite her own tongue in half if Luna called for help.

           “Can I help you gentlemen find anything?”

           “Your assistance is greatly appreciated, dear lady,” Fabian drawled.  She was fairly attractive, for an older woman.  He resisted the urge to place an arm around her shoulders, but one hand strayed up to undo the top button on his shirt.  

           “We are just buying some clothing for our beloved daughter,”  said Maximus, putting an arm around Fabian’s own shoulders and squeezing up against him.  Fabian hoped his disgust did not show on his face.

           “Technically she’s my daughter,” Fabian blurted out. “Biologically, I mean.  I had her.  With a woman.  I’ve been with a woman before.”

           “I see,” said the saleswoman, lips pursed as if trying not to smile.

           “Yes, my partner supplied the genetic material for the surrogate to create our precious little seraph,” Maximus said, gesturing at Luna, who was still ravaging the BTS merchandise.  “We’re so happy to have her in our lives.”

           “Aww, that’ sweet,” the saleswoman cooed, possibly genuinely enchanted by them.  Also possibly turning on the charm because she worked on commission, and men rich enough to afford a surrogate were likely to drop a lot of money in the store.  

           “I’m the top,” Fabian announced suddenly, answering a question no one was asking.

           “Oh…okay.”

“I’m always the top.  And he absolutely loves the things I do to him, because I am extremely good at sex.  With my penis. Not any other way.”  The saleswoman just laughed nervously.

           “Well, naturally.”  Maximus folded his arms.  “I wouldn’t take an inferior lover.  Of course you always satisfy me in every way and do everything I ask.”

           “That’s right,” Fabian said, with just a hint of uncertainty.  He had a weird feeling that he was somehow losing this conversation.

           “Well, that’s…um….I’m glad you’re so happy together,” said the saleswoman as Luna came running up with an armful of shirts. “But maybe we should pause this conversation.  Little pitchers have big ears, you know.”

           “What does that have to do with anythi –“  

           Maximus’s question was cut off when the far wall of the store suddenly blew apart.  The saleswoman shrieked and wrapped her arms around Luna protectively as they were showered with debris.  Blinking through the dust in the air, Fabian could see the Wrecking Crew emerge through the hole in the wall.  Which would mean….oh, this wasn’t good at all.

           “See, I told you I saw them go in here,” said Piledriver, gesturing at Fabian and Maximus.

           “What are you doing here?” Maximus demanded. “You’re meant to be smashing up Times Square, and keeping the Avengers’ attention for at least another –“ Maximus checked his watch.  “12 minutes and 38 seconds.”  

           “The check bounced, Prince Deadbeat,” said Wrecker. “Pay up, or we’ll take it out of your hides.”  

           “Yeah, or you’re gonna be Prince Deadmeat,” added Bulldozer.  Thunderball groaned and shook his head, rolling his eyes.

Maximus whipped his head around to glare at Fabian.  Fabian tried to glare back, but wound up giving a half-hearted shrug.  Perhaps falsifying the account number had been an extremely minor, insignificant mistake on his part, but how was he to know that the Crew would be checking their bank accounts before the job was even finished?  

           “Can’t you even complete the simplest of tasks, Cortez?”  Maximus snarled.  

           “What, you expect me to waste my fortune on morons like that?” Fabian shot back.  “We would have been away already if you hadn’t wasted valuable time indulging the girl!”  Yes, that was right.  It was all Maximus’s fault.  

           “It was only a small amount of your supposedly enormous fortune, you dullard, which I would have gladly reimbursed after I regained my rightful-“ Maximus was interrupted as Bulldozer charged towards them, head down.  Maximus ripped Luna out of the saleswoman’s arms and dove to the right, Fabian jumped to the left.  Carried by momentum, Bulldozer ran past them, jumping harmlessly over the saleswoman who had fallen to the floor.

           “Get out of here, lady,” he yelled as he swung back around, trying to decide whether to go for Maximus or Fabian.  “Our beef’s with them, not you.”  The saleswoman hesitated, looking at Luna, clearly wanting to pull her out of harm’s way.  Luna’s eyes flashed.

           “Run,” she commanded, and the clerk turned and fled.  

           “See, this is why I always say we should insist on direct transfer.  Checks are worthless, and frankly outdated.  Everything’s digital now,” Thunderball was saying, as he advanced towards.Fabian, swinging the wrecking ball that gave him his name.  

         “Or cash.  That’s even better,” said Piledriver, heading towards Maximus. “You can always depend on cash.” Fabian held up his hands in a placating gesture.  Much as he loathed the idea of groveling in front of these men, surely he could talk his way around these simpletons.  

           “Gentleman….I believe there’s been a misunderstanding. The bank must have made an error, which can be easily remedied –“  Fabian was cut off as the wrecking ball swung at his head.  As he ducked, he could see Bulldozer out of the corner of his eye, apparently deciding that Fabian was the better target.  Just his luck.  

           “We’re not stupid, Cortez.  You’re not going to scam us out of what’s rightfully ours.” Fabian tossed himself out of the way at just the right time, and this time the wrecking ball collided with Bulldozer’s head as he charged.

           “Ow! What the hell, Franklin?!”

           “Well, don’t run right into it!”  

           Fabian was a skilled fighter and master tactician. He had been in multiple battles alongside the Acolytes, often leading the charge himself.  He had never lacked for courage or skill.  And, as an experienced and highly intelligent fighter, Fabian knew the advantage of a strategic retreat.  As Thunderball and Bulldozer sorted themselves out, Fabian took the opportunity to sprint away and hide in a utility closet.  Let Maximus handle the brutes, then he’d take Luna and continue the mission (possibly in honor of the Inhuman prince’s memory, depending on how the fight went).

           As he ran, he saw that Maximus had used his powers to turn Piledriver against Wrecker, and the two were trading blows. So clearly Maximus could handle the situation, and there was nothing wrong with him withdrawing from the battle temporarily to rethink strategy.  The utility closet was cramped, pitch black and smelled of bleach, but they were less likely to find him here than one of the fitting rooms.  He just needed a moment to think.  His powers would not work on the Wrecking Crew – their strength and durability was based in Asgardian magic, not superior genetics like mutants (or, to a lesser extent, Inhumans).  The way these humans immediately squandered their gifts through petty crime just showed the natural superiority of mutants.  Humans couldn’t be trusted with powers.

           Obviously an alternative plan was necessary.  Perhaps a quick wire transfer would smooth over this little problem.  Or maybe Maximus would finally make himself useful and use his powers to subdue the whole group, which he frankly should have done in the first place.  It was also likely that the destruction at the mall would draw the Avengers, which would ruin their plans, but allow Fabian to slip away in the chaos.  He could hear the sounds of the fight continuing outside, with shouting and what sounded like heavy punches.  Off in the distance, glass shattered.  

           Then, suddenly the door to Fabian’s sanctuary was thrown open and Maximus ducked inside, rubbing his right hand and wincing with pain.  Alone, Fabian realized.

           “Where’s the girl?” He demanded.

           “The little brat bit me and ran off,” Maximus snapped.  “Too much like her mother, indeed!”

           “So you just left her out there with those thugs? She’s your niece, for God’s sake,” Fabian exclaimed, appalled at the Inhuman’s callousness and cowardice.

           “Luna is an intelligent, mature girl, and they are unlikely to hurt her.  I just needed a moment to think, and the crew is still fighting one of their own.   Thanks to me, and not you!  You abandoned us both!”

           “I was coming up with a plan!” Fabian hissed. He was no coward, his retreat into the utility closet was entirely different from what Maximus had done.

           “Well, what is your brilliant plan, then?  You’re the one who caused this problem in the first-“ A voice interrupted him, shouting through the store.

           “Heeeeeeeey, Ponytail and Prince Loon.  We’ve got the girl!  Come out and face us if you want her back alive.  Make some noise, girlie.”  There was a faint cry of pain, then Luna’s voice called out.

           “Uncle Max, help!  This isn’t fun anymore!”

           Maximus went rigid, and in the faint light, Fabian could see his face contorted with rage.  Fabian himself was outraged – he might use Luna as a pawn in his larger plans, but he wasn’t going to physically harm the girl.

           It was partially vanity that made them take a minute to throw on their respective suits.  Fighting in human casual-wear was so undignified.  It was also the fact that their costumes were made of a high-tech, extremely strong cloth that would not easily tear and partially protected them from injury.  Also, Fabian appreciated how his costume would show off every bit of his beautiful, sculpted body.  One should always look one’s best, no matter the situation.

           Crammed into the utility closet, they threw on their clothing in the dark, with muffled curses as feet were stepped on, and elbows jammed accidently (or not-so-accidentally) into sides.  After a few confusing moments of fabric and limbs going all sorts of strange places, they burst out to confront the Wrecking Crew again.  They did not expect the Wrecking Crew to laugh.

           Fabian glanced over at Maximus, who was trying to pull his long coat over Fabian’s own cape and shoulder pads.  The costume hung loose on the shorter, slighter Inhuman.  Which meant….Fabian reluctantly looked down (one of the very few times he was ever hesitant to look at his own body), and saw Maximus’s black and silver suit, stretched tight across his chest.  The shirt would not come down all the way, leaving a bare midriff that Fabian would normally enjoy showing off, if he wasn’t wearing the disgusting, unwashed suit of a greasy lunatic.  And he generally preferred baring his abs for the ladies, not ugly, brutish career criminals.

           Maximus glared over at him.  

           “Take those off, Cortez, you’re stretching them out!”

           “Oh, forgive me for actually having a body worthy of homo superior!  We can’t all be scrawny nerds that never exercise!”

           “Oh, do forgive me for spending my time in actual worthy pursuits instead of “bench-pressing” and “man-scaping” and “GTL” like on the Jersey Shore –“  Maximus gave an indignant squawk as Fabian ripped the cape off his shoulders and fastened it around his own.

           “Are you ladies done?  We’ve got business here!” yelled Wrecker.  He had Luna tucked under one arm, struggling and kicking at him with little effect.  “No need for things to get ugly.  You give us the money, we give you back the girl.”

           “Yeah, and can we wrap this up before the Avengers get here?  We dropped a cement truck on She-Hulk, but that’s barely gonna slow her down.  And she’s gonna be pissed,” said Bulldozer impatiently.  Fabian could sympathize – he couldn’t imagine trying to get cement out of his own luscious, flowing locks.

           “Fine, fine, no need for such base violence.  We’ll pay what we owe.  That’s what we intended in the first place,” Maximus said, with a meaningful glare at Fabian.

           “You’ll pay more than that,” said Wrecker.  “You tried to cheat us, so the price has gone up. We want triple the original amount.”

           “Let’s just get out of here,” said Thunderball. “We can take the girl to a safehouse and release her when they pay up.  We shouldn’t be hanging around the guy with mind control powers.” Piledriver, who had shaken off Maximus’s control when the Inhuman ran, nodded in agreement.

           “I’m still in charge here, Professor,” snapped Wrecker.  “We’re not getting any deeper into this than we have to.  We get the money now, give them the girl, and then disappear.  Let them deal with the rest of it.”

As they argued, Fabian was feeling along the outlines of the suit that was stretched too tight across his body.  Bits of metal were digging into him whenever he moved, odd lumps on the inside of the suit.  Prince Packrat must have all sorts of things stashed into hidden pockets – maybe one of them would be useful.  He pulled out a small round sphere, about the size of a ball bearing, that had been digging into his left armpit.  Maximus grinned when he saw it.

           “Flash bomb,” he whispered.  “Throw it and cover your eyes.”

           “Hey, what are you two smirking about?”  yelled Piledriver.  “We’ve got the girl, you’d better not –“

           Fabian tossed the sphere at their feet, and threw an arm across his eyes as the world suddenly got impossibly bright for an instant. He put the arm down, and saw that the Crew was momentarily blinded.  Beside him, Maximus’s eyes flashed blue, fists clenched as he used his power.

           “Toss her to me,” he commanded, and Wrecker suddenly hurled Luna across the room at them.  Fabian was the one who wound up catching her.  She appeared unharmed, but had both hands clasped across her eyes.

           “Uncle Max, I can’t see!  I wanna go home!” she wailed.

           “Be brave, child, the affects will fade soon. You’ll be fine,” Maximus insisted, still concentrating.  Bulldozer started to stumble forward towards the sounds of their voices, but was slowed by Wrecker’s crowbar.  Maximus had the man completely in thrall, and he began to swing indiscriminately, battering the other disoriented Crew members.

           “Can I trust you to carry her, Cortez, or will you be screwing that up as well?”  

           “None of this would have happened if not for this side trip!  We should have stuck to the plan!”  Fabian wondered what other delightful gadgets Maximus had in this ridiculous suit of his. He’d palm a few when they exchanged clothing again.  There were so many ways for him to kill the Inhuman after he’d outlived his usefulness, and that thought was the only thing that kept Fabian going through this farce of a team-up.

Backpacking In The Desert

I was raised in the high desert with a thirst for adventure, so naturally, I gravitated toward the uncharted territory that backpacking could offer me. I was very fortunate that my father sparked my interest at a very young age.  He guided me on my first major backpacking trip at the age of 10.  From then on, I have loved the freedom and responsibility that backpacking guarantees. I recently moved to the East Coast and noticed some major differences between backpacking here and the desert setting where I grew up.  I have created a breakdown of things to consider if you haven’t had the opportunity to explore desert backpacking trails before.  Even if you are familiar with backpacking in arid regions, this might offer a good refresher to make sure your next backpacking adventure is a complete success.

To Tent or Not to Tent?

From my experience, on the much wetter East Coast, ditching the tent is not usually an option.  I’ve found, if there is camping involved, there must be a tent or something that serves a similar purpose. It seems like there is always a chance of rain and the bugs out here are HUGE, so wear a rain jacket. The possibility of a snake or other critter crawling into a boot or part of your wardrobe is much more likely as well. So, for most of my trips through the Eastern wilderness, I have resorted to carrying a lightweight tent.  Sometimes peace of mind is more important than shaving a pound or two off the pack weight.

The next time you happen to be trekking across the Nevada desert, however, to tent or not to tent, becomes a question with much more validity.  Looking over my past experiences, there have only been a few times when a tent was necessary for arid regions.  In the summer there are the occasional thunder bumpers, or perhaps a freak snowstorm of course, but generally, the weather is consistent from late spring into the early fall months.  So, we must ask ourselves if a tent is really all that important when there is a very slim chance of rain or snow.  For me, most of the time the answer is a hard no. A tent just isn’t worth the extra weight. Some people enjoy the feeling of security that a tent provides, but this is just an illusion; if a grizzly bear decides to eat you, it’s probably going to happen.  Tents offer very little in terms of insulation, so I generally try to resort to a lighter alternative.

What is the answer?  For me personally, I always take two cheap plastic tarps.  The main reason for my choice is the price.  I am notoriously cheap, and if it isn’t broken why would I fix it? A plastic tarp is reasonably light (although, there are lighter backpacking specific tarps available) and it is completely waterproof.  I use one as a sleeping pad to keep my bag clean and it provides a clean area to set my backpack.  The other tarp is kept handy in the off chance a thunderstorm, or blizzard decides to swing through. I’ve seen several reviews on hammock camping but I often quickly weed it out of the equation since there usually aren’t that many places to hang a hammock on desert trails. The tarp method is a somewhat backwoods way getting the job done but there are other options available to stay clean and dry. I recommend researching options available since two tarps for protection can be on the slim side of comfort.

What To Do About Water?

I try to learn as much as I can about a new area before attempting to hike into a difficult location.  I enjoy pushing into the farthest reaches of a wilderness area, where people rarely tread.  I realize this isn’t for everyone, but the further you get off the beaten path, the more prepared you need to be.  Cell phone service is often spotty or sometimes, nonexistent, meaning rescue is often not an easy thing to come by.  Preparation is your best friend, and this leads directly to the water dilemma. Where do you get water?  As I see it there are two options: pack all the water you will use during the trip or find the water as you hike. For day hikes, carrying enough water is not much of a challenge; I rarely use more than a gallon per day.  If you will be gone for multiple days though, expect at least one gallon of water per person per day.  Weighing in at 8lbs per gallon, you can see how packing water quickly loses its charm.

If I am planning on staying a night or more, I opt to find water along the way.  It has the major bonus of hugely reducing the amount of weight that needs to be carried in my pack.  Obviously, you should take water jugs for drinking between springs, but you won’t want to pack cooking water unless it is absolutely necessary. This can be dangerous if you haven’t been down the trail before and are not entirely sure where the water is located.  That is why I advocate looking online or contacting the park service for maps that show water sources.  If you end up packing into some uncharted territory, however, Google Earth is an option. Springs will show up as green spots in Google Earth and their locations can be added to your GPS.  Be very careful about trusting Google Earth because the pictures are outdated, and the conditions may have changed since the aerial photo was taken. I cannot stress enough how important it is to research and know where the water is before you pack into an area you know very little about.

Now that we have found the water, what do we need to do with it to make it safe? Since most people did not grow up drinking from mountain springs, our bodies have a chance of getting sick if we drink directly from the source.  I always plan on taking a pump style water filter with me whenever I head into the desert. It serves two purposes; the pump allows me to get the water from even the most minuscule crack in a rock and speeds up the filtration process.  I have found even though they are a little bit more expensive than the straw style filters, the pump type offers the least aggravating way to get a drink when you are high and dry on the trail. Water is a very important aspect of any great backpacking trip, be prepared to do your research because water can be hard to come by.   

Weather Conditions Can be Harsh, Prepare for them.

While weather is often unpredictable no matter where you are, the desert presents its own set of challenges.  Since there is less moisture in the air, the highs and lows are often spread much farther apart.  Make sure to dress in layers and be prepared for sub-freezing temperatures any time of the year, especially in the higher elevations. I generally take a hoody and an over shell as a bare minimum, even in the hottest of the summer months.  The high desert wilderness is often very hot during the day, with the nights bringing cold and windy conditions. It is of the utmost importance to prepare for the extreme conditions that can happen at any time of the year.  I remember one summer; a female hiker froze to death on the mountain behind my childhood home, in July. Be ready for any type of weather. Always hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Dehydration can come much faster than you might think, even if the weather is cold outside. Make sure water is always on hand and don’t forget to drink it.  The sun can cause fatigue or heatstroke if it is not prepared properly. The UV radiation is much more intense at higher elevations, and sunburn can occur rapidly. I usually wear a long sleeve shirt to protect my arms and back from the sun, and a hat to keep my face from getting burned.  Altitude sickness might be a concern if you are unaware of how your body reacts to being at higher elevations.  Try to take it easy on your first high altitude backpacking excursion, because you never know how altitude sickness will affect you.

Fire

Depending on the time of year, a fire can be a much-needed comfort after a long day of cold hiking.  Nothing seems to pass the time more naturally than sitting beside the fire having a conversation, while you watch the flames dance before your eyes. The allure of a fire can be hard to resist but careful consideration of the possible dangers is required.  Forest fires can burn massive amounts of the wilderness you are trying to enjoy, so always treat a campfire with the respect it deserves.  When I’m packing in the summer, I use a very small fire to cook my meals with, or I use a jet boil to reduce the chance of forest fire.  Jet boils seem to offer the most practical means of cooking when you are packing into an area. The weight of the fuel is almost negligible in comparison to the amount of food it prepares on a single canister of fuel. They are also very safe compared to a campfire in terms of sparking a forest fire.

As far as meals go, I usually stick with dehydrated backpacking food, found in almost any outdoors outlet.  They work very well in tandem with a jet boil system and make cooking easier after a long strenuous hike through the high country.  Dried foods are a must for snacks along the trail, I like beef jerky or any trail mix I can get my hands on to keep the hunger at bay.  Hiking burns a tremendous number of calories, making it important to keep something in your stomach at all times, so fatigue and muscle cramps won’t set in.

Hiking and backpacking in the drier parts of the world offer many unique challenges and opportunities. Although the climate may be harsh at times, its unparalleled beauty is hard to beat.  There are few things that can compare with a long desert sunset, on a hot summer day.  The high mountain peaks offer a unique look into a world with a very short growing period. We are allowed a short glimpse into how vivacious life can be in those few months without freezing temperatures and snow.  Although I do enjoy the wetter side of nature, the dry desert air will always hold an important place in my heart.

There’s nothing like making broad claims with a headline featuring some dubious grammar, especially at the beginning of the week. But bear with me and we will slice and dice the ever-nagging issues of security in this post.

Get the Security Team On Board

In the on-premise enterprise world, IT security groups are becoming the Department of No. If you use any sort of agile release train, like frequent releases of mobile app versions for your organization, you’ll be familiar with scans, audits and the general slowdown that occurs when you enter the security orbit. Modern software is about change and yet change is the enemy of security in the on-premise environment.

This is a conundrum since you want to release software regularly but don’t want to be that executive who opened a security hole that caused the theft of all your client data. In fairness to the security folks, on-premise security is really difficult since it exists at many levels, it’s often applied as an after-thought and their job is like plugging a million microscopic holes in a dam.

In cloud there’s a better way, and it resolves the conflicting tension between needing to introduce changes in the software, and ensuring the environment is secure. There are four features that security teams will love (I’m picking from AWS here but similar magic exists elsewhere):

The security team can define the roles and rights of every user and process in the system, making it pretty much impossible to create new instances (servers) or deployments that open ports or violate security policies. Instead of policing per application, they can focus on the entire organization in an abstract, generalized way.

Automation at every level minimizes intentional damage or accidental screw-up. From machine images to auto-scaling and templating, you can guarantee that the 100,000th instance is using the same security policies as the first. This goes a long way to making sure that growing complexity in the environment doesn’t create vulnerabilities.

Security tools such as Amazon Inspector provide constant security assessments and look for weaknesses 24/7. These applications ensure that any windows left open are slammed shut asap.

Centralized automatic logging of every action, API call and event make it much easier to see what’s happening and isolate problems when they occur. This eliminates operating in stealth mode so audit trails abound for every user and process.

The TL;DR version is that cloud gives security teams a fully configurable sandbox where developers can play and get sand in their eyes but not burn down the playground in the process. This compares to on-premise, which is more like trying to keep watch over a hundred caffeinated 5-year olds in a knife store.

With proper configuration, a security team can own and monitor a bulletproof environment and not need to firefight on a per-project basis.

But really, how can my data ever be safe in the cloud?

This is a legitimate question especially for non-technical people but before I answer, let’s start with one mind-blowing fact that people often forget when discussing digital things.

For physical products, locking them up in a place where you can see them will deter thieves and usually stop them from being stolen. This works because (1) the thief may not know you have said riches (2) the riches are put in a place that’s hard to find and (3) the riches are secured with locks, safes and armed guards that make it easier for the thief to steal from other people.

Under no circumstances are the items ever totally immune from theft, it’s just that stealing the Hope Diamond is an order of magnitude more difficult than stealing cash from a gym locker. You also know when your riches are stolen because they are gone.

Hackers also freeze when a human enters the room.

For digital products and data, the same deterrents don’t work the same way. If your corporate data is stored on your CEO’s laptop on the top floor of a heavily guarded building, the thief doesn’t need to enter the lobby Matrix-style to physically reach the laptop.

Hackers will attempt to breach your network, overcome digital security safeguards and then copy the file(s) if they find them. You may never know the data has been stolen because the original file is still there. Or the boss might just use the password Password123 and accidentally leaves his PC in the back of a taxi — that’s more common than you’d think.

So why is cloud safer than on-premise attempts to protect data? Well, the cloud was born in a public space so consequently has security baked into every layer of its design from the get-go:

When set up properly, cloud encrypts data at rest (i.e. when it’s stored somewhere) and in flight (i.e. when it’s moving around). I’m simplifying but essentially just stealing the data isn’t enough to get you very far — you have to do an unreasonable amount of work to read it because the math makes A Beautiful Mind look like he was just typing “Hello” upside-down on a calculator.

Amazon’s Snowball lets you ship corporate data from your armed guards direct to their data centers using UPS. So hijackers could presumably hit the UPS truck and steal all your corporate data, right? Unfortunately not — the encryption’s so tight that even if you have access to the hard disks with the data, you’ll still need a few hundred years to figure out the contents because of the method used.

Access controls and auditing are granular and very robust. Since most hackers are actually disgruntled employees on the way out of the building (or well-meaning workers accidentally doing damage), a well-designed set of policies will prevent 99% of all typical data loss events. And recovering from snapshots in the cloud is elegantly simple.

Major cloud providers have a slew of secrets, proprietary tools, potions and tricks up their sleeves to catch bad guys before you even know about it. Since you’re already in the secure area of their environment, you benefit from the multiple levels of threat detection they use non-stop. It’s like having an invisible Secret Service watching your back all the time.

Encryption and hacking aside, much corporate data loss happens because backups fail or, more likely, were never made in the first place. Automation in the cloud makes it much easier to create policies where every byte of data is held somewhere forever and you don’t have a server farm that somehow got forgotten when the network guy was on vacation in Hawaii.

What about Google and Amazon reading your data?

That’s what you really want to know about, right? There are rumors that Jeff Bezos and Larry Page get together at the weekends, laughing at their customer’s funniest emails and selling their corporate secrets to Russian mercenaries. They really only invented cloud services just to lure you into sharing your secrets with them.

Yeah, none of that is even remotely true and they have built billion dollars clouds precisely because they don’t do this. If this sounds nuts, let me add this — one Chief Operating Officer I met at a very large retail company told me that he would never, ever allow cloud in his business because Google and Amazon would steal all their point of sale transaction data and learn about their margins. Okaaay…

Security is the number one priority for all cloud platforms. They are all very, very secure.

But really, is my data safe?

Alright, here are some random thoughts to make you feel a bit safer:

Files stored in AWS are really held on multiple seal-healing hard disks which means they survive natural failure. This makes durability so impressive (99.999999999% — 11 9s, count ‘em!) that for 10,000 files stored, you would expect to lose a single file every 10 million years. If that’s not good enough, you can automate replication to other regions or other cloud providers and get so close to 100% that Extinction Level Events on a planetary level will be your biggest worry.

Encryption is a complex subject but in many of the key management systems, if you lose your own keys, nobody can read the data — not you, me, Amazon, Google or the NSA. There is no backdoor. Your key was the only way in.

The US government stores a ton of sensitive data in AWS (GovCloud) so Jeff Bezos risks the wrath of people trained in waterboarding if the security isn’t great. I’d hazard a guess that plenty of foreign governments have thrown their best minds into breaking in.

Often, we’re just trying to guard against stupidity

Finally, in my twenty glorious years in this industry, security failures are usually typified not by Homeland-style hacking squads bent on stealing your information, but the mundane stupid things that happen.

We once lost a team’s entire codebase because the lead developer kept it on his laptop and never checked it into source control — that was expensive.

A helpful intern once ‘cleaned up’ the shared drive at a company and wiped out all their marketing collateral for the last five years.

A client’s office kept their triply-backed up files all in the same building and it was washed away by floods.

And a receptionist installed viruses on an entire network by plugging in a USB stick to help out a sales rep off the street. He said just wanted to print a file.

Cloud providers give you the best processes, tools and practices to truly beef up your security game and, with the correct configuration, become world-class. Nothing in the on-premise world even comes close.

Backpacking In The Desert

I was raised in the high desert with a thirst for adventure, so naturally, I gravitated toward the uncharted territory that backpacking could offer me. I was very fortunate that my father sparked my interest at a very young age.  He guided me on my first major backpacking trip at the age of 10.  From then on, I have loved the freedom and responsibility that backpacking guarantees. I recently moved to the East Coast and noticed some major differences between backpacking here and the desert setting where I grew up.  I have created a breakdown of things to consider if you haven’t had the opportunity to explore desert backpacking trails before.  Even if you are familiar with backpacking in arid regions, this might offer a good refresher to make sure your next backpacking adventure is a complete success.

To Tent or Not to Tent?

From my experience, on the much wetter East Coast, ditching the tent is not usually an option.  I’ve found, if there is camping involved, there must be a tent or something that serves a similar purpose. It seems like there is always a chance of rain and the bugs out here are HUGE, so wear a rain jacket. The possibility of a snake or other critter crawling into a boot or part of your wardrobe is much more likely as well. So, for most of my trips through the Eastern wilderness, I have resorted to carrying a lightweight tent.  Sometimes peace of mind is more important than shaving a pound or two off the pack weight.

The next time you happen to be trekking across the Nevada desert, however, to tent or not to tent, becomes a question with much more validity.  Looking over my past experiences, there have only been a few times when a tent was necessary for arid regions.  In the summer there are the occasional thunder bumpers, or perhaps a freak snowstorm of course, but generally, the weather is consistent from late spring into the early fall months.  So, we must ask ourselves if a tent is really all that important when there is a very slim chance of rain or snow.  For me, most of the time the answer is a hard no. A tent just isn’t worth the extra weight. Some people enjoy the feeling of security that a tent provides, but this is just an illusion; if a grizzly bear decides to eat you, it’s probably going to happen.  Tents offer very little in terms of insulation, so I generally try to resort to a lighter alternative.

What is the answer?  For me personally, I always take two cheap plastic tarps.  The main reason for my choice is the price.  I am notoriously cheap, and if it isn’t broken why would I fix it? A plastic tarp is reasonably light (although, there are lighter backpacking specific tarps available) and it is completely waterproof.  I use one as a sleeping pad to keep my bag clean and it provides a clean area to set my backpack.  The other tarp is kept handy in the off chance a thunderstorm, or blizzard decides to swing through. I’ve seen several reviews on hammock camping but I often quickly weed it out of the equation since there usually aren’t that many places to hang a hammock on desert trails. The tarp method is a somewhat backwoods way getting the job done but there are other options available to stay clean and dry. I recommend researching options available since two tarps for protection can be on the slim side of comfort.

What To Do About Water?

I try to learn as much as I can about a new area before attempting to hike into a difficult location.  I enjoy pushing into the farthest reaches of a wilderness area, where people rarely tread.  I realize this isn’t for everyone, but the further you get off the beaten path, the more prepared you need to be.  Cell phone service is often spotty or sometimes, nonexistent, meaning rescue is often not an easy thing to come by.  Preparation is your best friend, and this leads directly to the water dilemma. Where do you get water?  As I see it there are two options: pack all the water you will use during the trip or find the water as you hike. For day hikes, carrying enough water is not much of a challenge; I rarely use more than a gallon per day.  If you will be gone for multiple days though, expect at least one gallon of water per person per day.  Weighing in at 8lbs per gallon, you can see how packing water quickly loses its charm.

If I am planning on staying a night or more, I opt to find water along the way.  It has the major bonus of hugely reducing the amount of weight that needs to be carried in my pack.  Obviously, you should take water jugs for drinking between springs, but you won’t want to pack cooking water unless it is absolutely necessary. This can be dangerous if you haven’t been down the trail before and are not entirely sure where the water is located.  That is why I advocate looking online or contacting the park service for maps that show water sources.  If you end up packing into some uncharted territory, however, Google Earth is an option. Springs will show up as green spots in Google Earth and their locations can be added to your GPS.  Be very careful about trusting Google Earth because the pictures are outdated, and the conditions may have changed since the aerial photo was taken. I cannot stress enough how important it is to research and know where the water is before you pack into an area you know very little about.

Now that we have found the water, what do we need to do with it to make it safe? Since most people did not grow up drinking from mountain springs, our bodies have a chance of getting sick if we drink directly from the source.  I always plan on taking a pump style water filter with me whenever I head into the desert. It serves two purposes; the pump allows me to get the water from even the most minuscule crack in a rock and speeds up the filtration process.  I have found even though they are a little bit more expensive than the straw style filters, the pump type offers the least aggravating way to get a drink when you are high and dry on the trail. Water is a very important aspect of any great backpacking trip, be prepared to do your research because water can be hard to come by.   

Weather Conditions Can be Harsh, Prepare for them.

While weather is often unpredictable no matter where you are, the desert presents its own set of challenges.  Since there is less moisture in the air, the highs and lows are often spread much farther apart.  Make sure to dress in layers and be prepared for sub-freezing temperatures any time of the year, especially in the higher elevations. I generally take a hoody and an over shell as a bare minimum, even in the hottest of the summer months.  The high desert wilderness is often very hot during the day, with the nights bringing cold and windy conditions. It is of the utmost importance to prepare for the extreme conditions that can happen at any time of the year.  I remember one summer; a female hiker froze to death on the mountain behind my childhood home, in July. Be ready for any type of weather. Always hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

Dehydration can come much faster than you might think, even if the weather is cold outside. Make sure water is always on hand and don’t forget to drink it.  The sun can cause fatigue or heatstroke if it is not prepared properly. The UV radiation is much more intense at higher elevations, and sunburn can occur rapidly. I usually wear a long sleeve shirt to protect my arms and back from the sun, and a hat to keep my face from getting burned.  Altitude sickness might be a concern if you are unaware of how your body reacts to being at higher elevations.  Try to take it easy on your first high altitude backpacking excursion, because you never know how altitude sickness will affect you.

Fire

Depending on the time of year, a fire can be a much-needed comfort after a long day of cold hiking.  Nothing seems to pass the time more naturally than sitting beside the fire having a conversation, while you watch the flames dance before your eyes. The allure of a fire can be hard to resist but careful consideration of the possible dangers is required.  Forest fires can burn massive amounts of the wilderness you are trying to enjoy, so always treat a campfire with the respect it deserves.  When I’m packing in the summer, I use a very small fire to cook my meals with, or I use a jet boil to reduce the chance of forest fire.  Jet boils seem to offer the most practical means of cooking when you are packing into an area. The weight of the fuel is almost negligible in comparison to the amount of food it prepares on a single canister of fuel. They are also very safe compared to a campfire in terms of sparking a forest fire.

As far as meals go, I usually stick with dehydrated backpacking food, found in almost any outdoors outlet.  They work very well in tandem with a jet boil system and make cooking easier after a long strenuous hike through the high country.  Dried foods are a must for snacks along the trail, I like beef jerky or any trail mix I can get my hands on to keep the hunger at bay.  Hiking burns a tremendous number of calories, making it important to keep something in your stomach at all times, so fatigue and muscle cramps won’t set in.

Hiking and backpacking in the drier parts of the world offer many unique challenges and opportunities. Although the climate may be harsh at times, its unparalleled beauty is hard to beat.  There are few things that can compare with a long desert sunset, on a hot summer day.  The high mountain peaks offer a unique look into a world with a very short growing period. We are allowed a short glimpse into how vivacious life can be in those few months without freezing temperatures and snow.  Although I do enjoy the wetter side of nature, the dry desert air will always hold an important place in my heart.
