@catrin-sara and i went to see the Sonic movie and i’ve got a LOT to say (and I’m gonna post it now because the movie came out ages ago and this has been collecting dust in my drafts)

* backstory’s a bit interesting…we get to meet a new bird lady

* there’re ECHIDNAS there. like, Knuckles clan echidnas. but NO KNUCKLES (which is vv valid)

* okay turns out WE GET TO SEE A YOUNG KNUCKLES AT THE START WOWOWOWOW

* Sonic most definitely has ADHD i don’t know what else to tell you

* Ben Schwartz as Sonic was really well done – good blend of Roger Craig Smith’s type of banter, Jason Griffith’s empathy and compassion, and Ryan Drummond’s overall immaturity/youth. Obviously props to the writers for writing a Sonic that actually has a decent, developed personality – Sega of America PLEASE take notes

* The story overall was pretty good, not cheesy or cringy but still lighthearted enough to be a kids film. Does go against the canon but as we all know, Sonic Team (and affiliates) manipulate the canon as they please.

* Sonic’s pretty much a crytid for the first 15 minutes of the film

* SANIC IS IN THE FILM. LIKE, THE SANIC DRAWING

* Tom and Maddie are the only valid heterosexual couple in film. they love each other so much and there’s no toxicity, which I absolutely love

* Speaking of Tom, the way Sonic initially talks about him makes it sound like a crush, which is…something

* Sonic STILL says “Uhh…Meow?” and it’s weird seeing the new Sonic design say that (as opposed to the old design)

* My singular complaint is (and people are gonna HATE me for this), Doctor Robotnik, or rather, Carey’s portrayal of Robotnik – it doesn’t feel like Robotnik, but rather Jim Carey’s been written into the movie. Or rather, a Jim Carey-type villain has been written into the movie. Not exactly Robotnik, in essence.

* There’s some sort of weird, slightly sexual tension between Robotnik and his right hand man

* The Robotnik dancing is very, very strange, and quite possibly the most in-character moment of the film

* Lots of slow motion and time stopping

* There are three (?) pop culture references in the film that I can remember – the Quicksilver slowmo scenes, Tom and Maddie watch Speed and Sonic called Keanu Reeves a “National Treasure”

* Sonic just wants a friend, which is SO valid of him

* Sonic says “Gotta Go Fast” and its Not Cringy!! What he doesn’t say however, is “I’m Sonic, Sonic The Hedgehog,” and I was a tad upset by that

* They say “Hell” once, and Robotnik nearly gets called a son of a bitch

* Robotnik has these “egg shaped” robots, which leads to Robotnik BEING CALLED EGGMAN IN THE FILM!!! vv excited about that

* sorry i’m skipping all the big actiony bits because i can’t remember them all. there’s A Lot

* Eggman says “Look what came out of my Eggsack” and that’s truly the most cursed part of dialogue in the whole film

* The friendship between Sonic + all the humans (especially the wee girl) is so so good. I loved the characters and character interactions in the film

* SPEAKING OF CHARACTERS, one of the side characters police officers has my absolute heart. He’s definitely a himbo, and Catrin said he had “Big Knuckles Energy.”

* I think they should integrate some of the film into the canon, like Sonic’s personality and his electricity/energy power thing. The energy thing would be a good plot for a game, and the personality would be a long-awaited change from Roger Craig Smith’s overtly cocky and douchebaggy Sonic that he Keeps Getting Made To Work With

* Sonic’s energy surges (like the super big ones) are emotional responses and I don’t want to spoil it too much but there’s a scene where Tom triggers the energy surge by saying something and, if you’ve seen the movie you’ll understand what I mean, I wish that that was how the Sonic 2006 “death” scene played out (instead of the Elise kiss thing).

* Eggman’s eventual fate freaked me out a bit but besides that the ending was really really good!!

* Sonic was not hugged ONCE. Catrin’s said she’d adopt Sonic and amend this

* Overall I really enjoyed the Sonic The Hedgehog movie and I’m very glad I got to see it!! Also the mood for the whole film was Catrin periodically whispering “i love him” throughout

* At the start of the second post credits scene, Catrin said “Tails is gonna show up” as a joke AND HE DID!! we were thrilled by this
