Grian, a walking sunrise. Pink and orange cloth draped over his sun-kissed skin. His pure white wings trailed elegantly behind him, the feather tips scraped the ground. Gold chains hung over every surface of his body with charms depicting suns, hearts, and eyes. Soft light spewed out from the sun halo behind his head, casting a heavenly glow over him.
Scott's galaxy hair flowed around him, the silver stars shimmering through the purple and blue. A purple dress hung from his body, fading into galaxy black as the ruffles spread across the floor. Stars danced around his body, forming spinning halos and circles around his body.
A silver dress clung to Pearl's form, fading to blood red on the floor. A soulmate string was wound around her arm and neck, and the string frayed at the end. A crescent moon tiara was sat on her forehead, bathing her in a silver light. Tilly, as large as a dire wolf, stood at her side, with moons for eyes and a shimmer in her fur.
Martyn was enveloped in a deep blue cloak with a large hourglass emblem on the back surrounded by purple eyes. His blond hair was done up in braids with coral and seaweed woven in. Sea foam and sand magically wrapped around his arms and body, forming his into a living ocean painting.
Scar held a bouquet of sunflowers in his hand, wrapped by a strip of parchment with hearts printed on it. A dark green cloak with embroidered sunflowers hung from his shoulders with red, yellow, and green tassels that swept the floor around his feet. Bits of moss grew from the edges of his scars and along his arms.
Cleo was bathed in a variety of colorful and patterned fabrics clinging and stitched into their skin. A hole was rotted in her chest, revealing a floating, beating heart protected by nothing but their ribcage. A hoard of little zombie minions swarmed around their ankles, grasping the pool of colorful linen.
I standing in a hall of gods, surrounded by broken stained glass. I didn't belong amongst them. Not with my ripped jacket and sports car.

LoL Chapter 55- Hellās Chosen
Masterpost
A Wizard Hermits tale (AU, designs, ideas belongs to @theguardiansofredland)
The hermits discover a dark past to their paladin knight, does this change their perspective of him, or will it save their unlikely ally?Ā
Warning: Some description of wounds (i think)
________________________________
All eyes were on Wels. Very few had a look of knowledge. TFC, for one. But Tangoās visible confusion gives way to a much softer, quieter version of the hellfire wizard. āHelsknight? You mean the marauder from years ago? But he died.āĀ
āYouāre right, he did. And I killed him. I buried him so deep inside me, and vowed to do whatever I could to be a better man. When Helsknight died, Welsknight was born.ā Welsās fingers are tight in the bloodstained fabric, knuckles turned white as heās forced to relive, to speak of his dark past.Ā
āNo no no no. Youāre joking, right?ā Doc shakes his head. Even he feared Hellās chosen knight. Wels canāt possibly be that same person. Wels, a quiet, collected paladin with the heart of gold and courage of a lion. āI mean...no one ever told the story of Helsknight with a tail.āĀ
āLess limbs to get cut off if itās protected by armor.ā Wels points out, flicking the lionesque tail. āYou want proof? What was the last time anyone ever saw Helsknight?ā
Doc cocks an eyebrow, then waves his hand. āHels and his band of bad guys attacked one of Ventusās- the God of Judgement- temples. But the attempt was failed, and Helsknight himself was left behind as he bled out...from his neckā¦ā
The entire group stares as the scar that Wels reveals, running from his collar to his clavicle. TFC doesnāt stare like the others. Heās known all of this the whole time. Tango shakes his head. āBut youāre nothing like Helsknight. He murdered and killed for fun, to cause chaos and bring hell onto Lairyon. Wels, youāreā¦āĀ
āA changed man. Just like Apatia can be- if you give him the chance. Like the woman who healed me did, like X and TFC. Tango, if you donāt let Apatia give his chance to change and rectify what he can, then you canāt let me be any different. You canāt be a hypocrite and pick and choose.ā From between Wels and Tango, Apatia groans. The blood has stopped, Renās work healing leaving a sloppy open wound behind.Ā
Apatia was pale, paler than he already was. Almost the same color as Grian, as the latter continues to recuperate from the torture he faced. But unlike Grianās shallow, soft breaths, Apatiaās runs ragged and harsh. His jaws are clenched, fighting off the pain. With the remaining bandages and healing salve, Wels wraps up the stump of Apatiaās tail fin.Ā
Tango and Doc are still quiet, trying to comprehend the news thatās been delivered to them. It all makes sense, but their eads still struggle to put the two completely different personas together. As if theyāre different people all together.Ā
Everyone knows who Helsknight is- was. He appeared as if from nowhere, like a demon spawned straight from hell. And immediately, he began reeking havoc. His band of villains attacked and raided. They were more than just some lowly bandits, or even a mafia. Helsknight was a villain, killing without mercy, without remorse, and without discretion. It wasnāt until their botched attack on that temple that ended the reign of terror that Hellās chosen knight left on Lairyon. Just as quickly as Helsknight appeared, he faded into nightmares and horror story. Kids were told to watch out for the knight with one eye, because heād pluck out their own to replace his.Ā
But Welsknight? Heās calm and collected, if a bit snarky. Even when battling even the husks, he always hesitates to strike a killing blow if thereās a potential to save the life instead. Wels is jovial, and a great baker, and tells great stories. Sure, heās a great knight, but Tango once saw Wels cry over a dead fish he found at the beach. Heās a paladin, not a barbarian.Ā
Helsknight supposedly died years ago. Welsknight joined the hermits a few years back. Though thereās a span of time in between the day Lairyon celebrated the defeat of Hels and Wels following TFC back to Eremita, it begins to all make sense. There's a reason why Wels never talks about his past. Never visits home. Never explains how he got many of his scars.
Like puzzle pieces, it all falls together and paints a picture. Docās jaw clenches. As much as he hates to say it, or even think it, Wels is right. If a monster like Hels can become the man before Doc today, then maybe, just maybe , theres hope for Apatia.Ā
So long as he lives. The hermits are so focused on Apatia, their argument on whether he should live or die, no one notices Grian rouse from the darkness that still grips him. No one noticed the sky open up, both in Grianās eyes and the sky beyond the windows. No one notices him weakly clamber out of bed, nearly falling flat on his face, and walking over to join them in the group.Ā
āWhat are we on about?ā Even when he speaks up, the other hermits are so used to his voice that it hardly registers.Ā
āWelsknight was once helsknight, and whether we should save Apatiaās life or not.ā Tango shrugs, his red eyes glaring down at Apatia with distaste. He still hates the man, but at the same timeā¦ theyāre supposed to be the heroes.Ā
āAs your resident healer, I think we should. But...Iām not sure why heās here in the first place.ā Ren looks up, realizing who is speaking, and scoops Grian into his arms. His tail wags loud and heavy, banging against the other hermits with every oscillation.Ā
āWelcome back to the land of the living, my dude!ā Ren only sets Grian down when TFC reminds him that Grian is still working towards regaining his life, his color. Heās still slightly unsaturated, his skin missing the tint of pink, the red of his robest boarding the color of dried blood. Ren sets Grian back on the bed, trying to force the angel to rest. But now that Grianās awake, heās ready to cause trouble and start his day- even though he has no clue what time it is.Ā
āWhatās going on? I...I donāt remember much. When did you guys save me? Why is Apatia here? How did you find me?ā The questions fall like rain in a storm, impossible for the hermits to catch every last drop.Ā
Itās TFC that manages to slow the downpour. āHold on, hold on Grian. Why donāt we start from the beginning? Weāll fill you in on everything, in time.ā
----------------------------------------------------
All the hermits, once again under the safe canopy of the massive oak tree in their guild hall. Grian is wrapped in a warm, soft blanket- knitted by Stress- and a mug of warm apple cider rests in between his pale hands. āI canāt believe you guys came for me.āĀ
āOf course we were gonna save you, Grian.ā Scar practically laughs at the mere idea of leaving him behind. But for Grian, whoās been kicked out of so many guilds for his troublemaking, it really shows how much they care.Ā
A rumble of agreements follow, and after a few more minutes of quiet comforting, itās Grian himself that changes the subject. āDolios is getting more powerful by the minute. I could feel all the energy flowing through those leylines, into him and that monster, Eurynomos. We canāt delay this any longer. Dolios has to go down.āĀ
āBut we donāt even know how. We can destroy as many crystals as we want, but heāll just keep making more. He has more power than a bunch of lowly mercenaries. He even beat Apatia, one of his own Councilmembers. One of the strongest guildmasters in all of Lairyon.ā BDubs points out. Everyone goes silent as they remember the man in their infirmary. The stranger- heās not a hermit, yet heās among them.Ā
Grian looks up, pale face and hollowed eyes alarming for the hermits. He hardly looks to be among the living, but less like a dead man walking like he was before. āXisuma, your brother mentioned something about the ancient ones. DO you think there could be a clue for us there? In the past?āĀ
X sighs, leaning back in his chair as he considers the question. āIf the answer to ending Doliosās dark reign truly lies in the past, then weād have better luck finding the answer ourselves. Thousands of years, eroded by time, by kingdoms and cultures rising and falling, not to mention the disappearance of the ancient ones. Thereās a reason ancient magic is dead- because none of the books teaching it survived.āĀ
āThereās one person we know who has studied the ancient ones for years.ā Joeās voice cuts through the crowd, looking around. Every other hermit is lost and confused, but Joe can see the mixed emotions raging in Xisumaās eyes. āBesides Ex can take care of the island, of Apatia while weāre searching.āĀ
āEx chose to leave Eremita. Why in godsās names would he want to come back, to help us?ā X growls.Ā
āBecause heās your brother. He helped us save Doc. Heās been helping us, helping all of Lairyon- in his own weird, Ex way. Heās not the villain here, heās your brother.āĀ
X clenches his jaw. The scar over his eye burns at the memory of their fight. The words he said to his brother, and the worst responded in kind. Xisuma still received letters from Ex, but he only opened them when Cleoās cider had clouded his better judgement. And he never responded.Ā
But he also remembers the moment, after years estranged, he laid eyes upon his twin brother, crammed into the bookstore he was running. The moment of relief, of happiness to see Ex alive and well. Their identical faces, like mirror images of one another. His hair pure white, like the bright sun in the sky. Even now Xisuma remembers how often heād complain he could always find Ex hairs on his clothes.Ā
And that Ex helped them save Doc. All these years fighting, Xisuma canāt believe heās going to be the one to concede defeat. But for the fate of Lairyon, he guesses he has to. He pulls off his mask, turning it over in his hands, running a thumb over the scratched out symbol. He swallows his pride, and stands. āIāll get the letter to Phoebe. Whatās one more stranger to the island?ā

Iām still a little salty about how few units actually got mana spirals this month, but the ones we did get were surprisingly powerful, and the new banner also introduced some surprisingly meta-changing units, like the sentient potato who just wants to be vored.
Thereās a lot to talk about so Iām gonna put my rambling under a cut, lol.
OK so first of all. Pipple. This fuckinā non-limited 4-star water wand built with defense and energy buff skills, who is LITERALLY A TALKING VEGETABLE, is somehow the actual meta-changing start of this banner. After waiting more than an entire goddamn year for our first 5-star water blade, he ends up getting overshadowed by a goddamn potato. And as much as I love Valerio as well, I wouldnāt have it any other way, lmao.
It feels insane to even say it, but with the way his kit works, he honestly feels like a lite version of Gala Cleo. He can probably do just fine on his own in a normal water team, but if you get four Pipples together and give them something like Odd Sparows, they become a group of tanks who can deal surprisingly high damage, while sustaining themselves with healing doublebuff.
When I first saw his skills I thought that he was basically just a slightly better version of Pia, and that heād basically just be a meme character, but honestly his passive abilities are enough to make him genuinely great. They give him a really unique play-style, especially with how he approaches energy.
I wasnāt sure what to make of his first ability at first since itās description is super vague, but apparently it makes it so that his basic combos are 120% or so better than those of a normal wand unit. Which is pretty insane on itās own. But then you have his third ability, which is basically just the one Yaten already has, where he gets buffs along with his energy level, up to a maximum of 40% strength and 15% crit rate when heās energized. But unlike basically any other unit in the game, who wants to dump their energy stacks into an attack skill or a heal, Pipple doesnāt do that at all. He doesnāt even have any attack skills or heals, so if you ignore weapon skills and dragon skills, he doesnāt have anything to use energy on like that. Instead, heās meant to basically stay permanently energized so that he doesnāt lose the buff that comes along with it. So once you get him energized, it basically means that he has a 40% strength and 15% crit rate buff for the entire rest of the fight. Plus he can trigger strength doublebuff with his S1 to give him even more strength.
I donāt think the DPS charts do justice to his true potential because of how weird and indirect his kit is, but I think heās genuinely really strong. Heāll probably work really well with the eventual water element 6-star weapons, since the skills on those are just buffs, so he can use it without losing his energy buffs.
People have already cleared expert and master HBH with 4 Pipple teams, and apparently itās not very difficult at all, and itās basically impossible to get killed with that comp. Itās probably slower than other water team comps, but it seems very tanky.
I think he does enough damage on his own to be very good in a team with other units, but Iām not as sure about that. Youād probably end up designing a team around him like you do with Patia, to make full use of strength/healing doublebuffs.
At the very least I think heās immediately better than Lily. Which probably isnāt a huge achievement, but still, lol. If he ends up being good for regular teams and not just 4-Pipple teams, I think heāll help let Gala Elly run without Chocolatiers, which could be nice.
I was thinking that, until Thaniel eventually gets a buff, I might use Xainfried for HBH now that heās gotten his own mana spiral, but once I get a HDT1 water wand, Iām kinda tempted to just play Pipple instead, lmao.
In general i really like units like this who have weird and unique play-styles, and itās really fun to get some silly and non-human adventurers like this. And since heās a non-limited 4-star, itās not a bad thing if he ends up being really meta-defining. Overall his existence is just a net positive for the game and Iām wuv him :) Iāve been kinda bitter lately about how the non-limited water roster as a whole just doesnāt stack up well against limited water units like Gala Elly and MH Sarisse, but Pipple [and Xainfried getting his mana spiral] really helps with that. I feel like Pipple might end up being a popular budget entry point into HBH.
He also might be basically the only unit in the game to make good use of The Petal Queen in order to immediately energize himself, which is fun. I like how these sorts of units who donāt use attacking skills end up benefiting from some weird and niche wyrmprints that you usually donāt use otherwise. It seems like Chocolatiers is better for HBH, but for basically any other fight I think The Petal Queen would probably be better, since the immediate jumpstart on his offensive buffs would probably be better than the immediate defense buff.
And on the topic of the mana spirals we got, Iām still super salty that Norwin didnāt get one, or even any of the other gacha 4-star shadow units, but at least the three mana spirals we got were really great.
Xainfriedās probably getting overlooked by Nefaria and OG Cleoās mana spirals, and also by Pipple being the hot new water unit everyone loves, but his mana spiral seems like itās really helped him, and I donāt regret getting him up to around 64MC immediately. I think the DPS sims put him at around the level of Victor and Kirsty, which is a pretty big deal considering how underpowered he was before this. Thereās also the fact that we donāt have a frostbite punisher wyrmprint or dragon yet, so his true damage potential probably hasnāt been reached yet. I think heās probably going to end up being readily accepted into all levels of HBH after this, which would be great. I think heās always been perfectly viable for HBH, but never āmetaā. But he seems really strong now. And once we get a frostbite punisher print, he might become a really meta unit since he and Valerio are currently the only frostbite enablers in the game, though I think Mitsuba will probably get frostbite too, and theyāll probably give it to some of the existing water units through their mana spirals. Heāll probably be one of the better frostbite enablers, though.
OG Cleo getting a buff wasnāt exactly a surprise, and it mostly went the way I expected, but her getting buff dispel was a surprise. I think sheās probably the best healer for Kai Yan, but I dunno if buff dispel will be a huge deal in HJP. But since Nefaria also got buff dispel, I think S-Verica is still gonna have a space in the Kai Yan meta. People probably wonāt want to run much with Heinwald in that fight, sadly, lol.
Nefaria, on the other hand, was a huge surprise, since it looked like theyād just skipped over her entirely. But she got a mana spiral out of the blue, and apparently itās made her extremely powerful, maybe second only to Gala Cleo herself, lol. Iām still annoyed at how their approach to fixing her was just āslap the poison meta on her existing kitā, but oh well. It did the job with making her extremely good, I guess. Iām happy that sheās finally a good unit, even if I wish they had been a bit more creative about it.
Since they have basically the same kit, and wind also has itās own poison meta, theyāre probably just going to give Hawk the exact same buff [maybe without the buff dispel, though], and hopefully thatād also lead to him being extremely strong.Ā
The Kai Yan fight also came out, which is itās own whole thing. Iām currently just grinding standard to get the materials to max out the shadow tree, but from what I can gather, both difficulties are apparently a lot easier than Volk, which is . . . kinda surprising. Maybe itās just because the shadow roster is stupidly powerful, but it sounds like the requirements to get by in Expert arenāt very high at all. Which probably means that the meta surrounding it will probably be more accepting of a variety of units. But probably with a preference for the 70MC ones.
I was worried that theyād tune the fight too much around Gala Cleo and just make it super punishing and impenetrable, but it feels more like they just didnāt even bother putting effort into designing the fight in a way that shut her down. Which is probably a good thing in the long run, since it makes the fight more accessible. I thought theyād at least make the satellite things absorb some of Gala Cleoās S1 hits, but apparently not, lol.
Iāll see how expert goes when I get to it, but I wonder if in the long run, itāll be easier to break into Kai Yan and get a MUB 6-star shadow weapon to take into HJP, instead of doing HZD first to get a shadow HDT weapon. Thatād be interesting.
The shadow 6-star weapons also seem to have some interesting effects. I thought that all the 6-star weapons might just get alternating strength and regen buffs, but the shadow ones have attack rate and defense. I guess itās probably designed with each Agito fight in mind, since healing is important to Volk, while Kai Yan has more unavoidable damage.
I have no idea what theyāll do with the other element types, but one way or another I think, as I said, Pippleās gonna really benefit from a water Agito weapon, since it wonāt have an attack or a heal [hopefully] for him to waste his energy stacks on.
I kinda hope the wind one gives a crit rate buff, since wind needs more of that in general.
Oh yeah, and Valerio also exists, lmao. I still really want him, but I can live without him at this point, especially with how much Iāve come to love Pipple as a character. I do like how unique and interesting Valerioās kit is, though, and Iām glad that he seems to be pretty strong overall. I wish theyād stop designing blade units that are dependent on high combo counts, though. Itās just not a good weapon type for that, lol.
I donāt think Nimis is particularly amazing at the moment since thereās not many water units who can reliably get high crit chance in the first place, but since Pipple can pretty easily get a more or less permanent 15% crit rate buff, Nimis might be pretty good on him. Basically water needs a unit like Ezelith to really make use of him. And thus far we donāt really have that, but I still feel like Laranoa might end up getting basically the exact same buff that Ezelith got when she gets her mana spiral, in which case sheād probably use Nimis. I wouldnāt be surprised if Mitsuba ends up being based around crits when she comes out, as well.
And on that note, the second part of the current banner should be starting in the next few days, and itāll almost certainly give us Mitsuba as a 5-star water dagger, and Picaro as . . . some sort of 4-star. Unless they invent an entirely new dragon for the banner, I think theyāll just have Nimis on rate-up for it again, or feature an existing water dragon like Leviathan. In general Iām just not very interested in the idea of the part two banner at the moment. Mitsubaās a fun character, but I like both Pipple and Valerio more, and in terms of burn res water daggers I think I like Orsem more, too. I also just kinda hate Picaro so I have no real interest in the idea of getting him as a playable adventurer, lol. Iām not even sure what type of unit heāll be, honestly. I think heāll be a flame 4-star, going by his character design, but Iāve got no clue about his weapon type. He doesnāt really seem to be holding a weapon in his art like Valerio and Mitsuba are, so itās hard to guess. Iām also not even sure if the flame roster has any notable gaps that can be filled by a new 4-star. I guess it might be neat if heās a sleep res healer that has sleep cleanse, but I guess weāll see.
I still think Pippleās gonna end up being the real star of his banner as a whole, lol.
Anyway, for the time being, Iām gonna keep grinding Kai Yan, and Iāll probably do a few runs of HMC to get Pipple his HDT water wand. After that Iāll see if thatās enough investment to let me break into eHBH with him. Iāll probably end up having to max augment Odd Sparrows first, but Iāve at least started on that already. I at least have Xainfried as a good alternative option to get into that fight, but I just really really like the idea of taking a sentient potato creature to fight a flame dragon :v
