the fact that the albert and haydée romance was apparently added for the new count of monte cristo film is so interesting to me because it works thematically so WELL with edmond coming to a point where he realizes that if he progresses any further in that particular part of his revenge scheme that he'll be tearing apart a pair of young lovers for his own agenda like fernand de morcerf did to him and mercedes all those years ago. so tasty and thematically interesting, i can't believe it wasn't part of the original story because it's a great moment in the story.
