So I’ve been toying around with an AU idea, one that I think is actually pretty plausible.

What if Mara Sov, instead of convincing her family to sign up to the Exodus project, instead thought the best approach to solve the human body’s fragility was the Exo program?

Hear me out. She’s a precocious nerd that is haunted by the fragility of our bodies, how easily a life can go extinct. In canon she approaches the problem collectively, thinking not of the individual but of the species: everybody dies, the best way to avoid a mass extinction event is for humanity to scatter. So she signs up for an ark ship project.

But if things were a little bit different, if she was a little bit more Clovispilled, she could have gone with the individual approach - particularly as a teenager.

Now, hear me out! Imagine the consequences of this - Mara Sov pulling a Savathûn to keep her memories after being exo-fied, stashing diaries and voice recordings and delving into these when she wakes up without memories. Bringing more Exo to a quiet rebellion before the Vex attack. Collaborating with Elsie and Banshee from the very beginning! A population of rebel Exo either staying in Europa or establishing themselves in the Reef after the Vex invasion! There are scan backups and a working assembly line in Europa still, the population can grow.

They could still have this contact with the Ahamkara and the Nine and the Ancients in the Reef, Mara could still build her throne world, just no inherent paracausality. She would have left her teenage admiration of Clovis Bray behind, after seeing the horrors in Europa. Now she can bother the head for funsies.

This has an interesting implication regarding Mara’s multiple katabases and anabases: she has an (existentially terrifying) backup plan in this AU. If she doesn’t come back in N years an older version of her can be uploaded to another machine.
