Happy Reading Guys! ❤️
"So you won't be coming?" Meera's voice came shrill and squeaky through Ethan's phone.
"No love. There are no senior doctors here and the interns need someone with them." He waited with baited breath for her reaction on the other side.
"I am sorry, I promise I will make it up to you, Rookie," he said when he grew impatient waiting for her answer.
He heard her let out a long sigh. "Okay, Ethan. But you owe me big this time."
"I know, darling. I love you. Go get the title for Edenbrook, all the best."
"I love you too." Meera ended the call her voice so small it almost made Ethan feel bad for lying to his wife. But he couldn't help but grin while putting down his phone thinking about the amount of people he would be avoiding by paying a small price of a lie.
It was the day of the 16th Annual Crosstown Softball Game. For the majority of his work-life Ethan had religiously avoided anything and everything related to the game.
Until three years earlier, his wife waltzed through the doors of the Diagnostics office and asked him to not only come to the game but also play for Edenbrook.
Ethan still doesn't understand why he agreed to her but he did and since then he hasn't been able to get out of the game.
Ethan was very well aware of what was going on inside of Meera's brain and it was just a matter of time before she popped the question.
Two days ago as the couple ate lunch together in Ethan's office Meera said with vivid enthusiasm, "So you excited for the game?"
Ethan thought about a minute on what was the best way of approaching the question. "What game?"
"The softball game!"
"Do I have to? Rookie?"
"Of course you have to. I mean why not?"
"You know… you know…" Ethan struggled to come up with a valid reason. "I could really use a break from work. It has been quite a few tiresome days."
Meera let out a hearty chuckle. "You are the freaking chief. Just take a damn day off."
Ethan sighed, moving the risotto on his plate.
Meera put her hand on his. "Look Ethan, it's just one day, and this is the first time we are attending as a married couple. Also you know, I love seeing you inaugurating the game in all your chiefly glory."
Ethan couldn't help but smile.
"And if that's not enough," Meera continued, putting on her best bedroom eyes possible, "just think of me running around the field all sweaty and hot. Maybe I'll ditch the sports bra for you." Meera winked.
"The sweat will just lead to rashes and playing without a bra will just cause sagging of your breasts."
Meera rolled her eyes, "you are no fun Ramsey."
Ethan knew Meera wouldn't be going down without a fight. He knew he needed a better, stronger plan. With that thought he increased the speed on the treadmill, in the hospital gym.
The scalpel jockey got on the treadmill next to his flashing his megawatt smile. "Hello Ethan! Everything good?" Ethan nodded, pinching the bridge of his nose. Bryce put on his headphones and concentrated back on his run.
Ethan got down the treadmill and sat down for a small breather. His solitary gym time was no longer solitary. It had started with Lahela and Averio and then was quickly followed by Tobias and Kevin.
Ethan looked around at the four men, and that's when it occurred to him. He had to take their assistance to escape from the softball game.
He instantly hated the idea but he reckoned there was no way out. "Small price" he thought, and made his way onto the other side of the room where Kevin was doing weights and the others cheered him on.
"97, 98, 99 and 100!" Rafael finished counting as Kevin put down the weights.
"Great form man, great form," Bryce complimented.
"Thanks man," Kevin replied panting.
Ethan awkwardly cleared his throat to bring their attention towards him.
"Ethan! What's up my friend?" Tobias stepped forward.
"I um. I am actually in need of a little bit of help."
"Sure! Do you want me to spot you?" Rafael offered.
"No. I need help regarding matters outside of the gym."
The four other men looked at him suspiciously, confusion etched all over their faces.
"Wait, what?" was Bryce's first reaction.
"But why don't you want to go to the game?" Raf put a logical question forward.
"Yeah, don't you want to see us kick Mass Kenmore's ass?" Kevin added.
"Meera is going to be very very pissed if she finds out," Bryce said once he overcame the initial shock.
"I know, I know, I know. I just really want to avoid some entitled, self presumed people."
Tobias was surprisingly quiet throughout the entire conversation. He stopped pacing and approached Ethan. "Okay, suppose, we agree on helping you out, what would we get in return?" Tobias' smile turning into a mischievous grin.
"Ohh! I like this question," Kevin's eyes gleamed.
Ethan sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose.
The stadium buzzed with people. Doctors of both the hospitals mingled around. Smell of beer and hotdogs occupied the air. Ethan walked down the steps and into the field, his wife beside him.
"Don't you just love the softball game?" Meera pulled in a long breath and said.
"No I don't."
"Of course you don't," Meera smacked his shoulder playfully. "But I do. I wish it wasn't just one day you know? Like what if we had this kind of event around four to five times a year?" Meera looked at him," I wonder if I can implement this as the head of diagnostics."
"Not without the chief's permission."
"Imagine Ethan, this is such a sign of strength for both the hospitals and it shows such fraternity in the doctor community---"
"It's still a no Rookie."
Meera sighed, "fine! Was worth a shot though."
Meera's old roommates along with Bryce and Rafael made their way towards them.
"Hi!" Meera screamed and wrapped them in a hug as if they didn't meet each other at work everyday.
Ethan's eyes set on that of Bryce and Rafael's. Rafael gave a curt nod, whereas Bryce winked at him.
"Come on guys, let's get some beer and hotdogs before the big game."
"Yes, I am starving!" Jackie added.
Meera took a few steps with her friends towards the stalls and then stopped on realising Ethan wasn't following her. "You won't be coming babe?"
"No I am not hungry, I'll go and look into the preparations."
"Okay. Catch you on the field honey!" Meera laughed before walking away with her friends.
Ethan searched for Tobias and found him speaking to a few Kenmore doctors.
Tobias waved to him with a smile. Seconds later Ethan received a message from Tobias on the group chat that Bryce had created. "Activating Mission : Escape Ethan" it read.
Meera took another bite of her hotdog when she saw Tobias running towards her group frantically speaking with someone on the phone.
"You sure there is no way out?" she caught the last part of the conversation. "Okay I'll speak to Meera and get back to you." Tobias ended the call.
"What's wrong Tobias?" she asked as the entire group impatiently watched him regain his breath.
"It was Kevin. A new patient has been admitted under the team. She is not in a good condition so Kevin is there observing his symptoms and trying to prescribe him a treatment."
"But aren't the interns supposed to take care of everything today?" Sienna questioned.
"It's a DT patient, I don't think they can do much," Bryce replied.
Meera silently nodded her head. "So he won't come to the game?" Elijah asked.
"Good for me, I don't have to beat his ass," Aurora smirked.
"Oh bummer! He was really looking forward to face Aurora in the game," Raf sighed.
"Not to mention he was a valuable asset to the team," Bryce added.
"But ofcourse patient care comes first." Tobias reasoned.
Meera silently took in all the information thinking deeply for a couple minutes. "I'll go," she said.
"What?" The three men asked at once.
"Yeah. It's my team. I should be there. I'll go over and send Kev back---"
"I'll go Rookie," Ethan interrupted her mid sentence.
Meera was so engrossed in the conversation that she didn't notice when her husband had joined their circle.
"No!" Meera protested. "If anyone should go, it should be me."
"I know, love, but you are required here too. But I am not playing, MK can inaugurate the game and still loose---"
"Hey! I am standing right here," Aurora protested.
"The thing is I can handle the patient but I can't handle the game so let's divide and conquer?"
Speechlessly Meera buries her face in Ethan's chest.
"Besides you know I came here to see you play only," Ethan winks which makes Meera chuckle.
"The great Ethan Ramsey winking, what a time to be alive," Jackie mocked, taking a sip of her beer.
"Fine. You go. But promise to come back if the patient becomes stable."
"I promise love," Ethan leans in to kiss her on the lips.
"Such couple goals!" Sienna clutches her heart.
"I love you too." Meera ended the call, looking around at her friends that sat surrounding her on the benches.
"So any updates?" Elijah asked.
"Patient is not in a good condition but Ethan says, he can handle it for today," Meera rests her head on Sienna's shoulders.
"Don't worry Bose, it'll be fine. Let's finish off MK first," Jackie handed her a beer.
"Again, I am sitting right here," Aurora exclaimed, throwing her hands in the air.
"Meera! What's with the long face?" Harper took a seat next to her, putting down her beer bottle and taking a bite of her hot dog.
"Nothing much, what about you? Where were you all morning?"
"There was this surgery that couldn't be rescheduled at all so I had to perform it. Infact I just wrapped it up and got directly here to cheer for you all," Harper said with a big smile. "Why isn't Ethan here? Wasn't he suppose to inaugurate?" Harper looked around the field for Ethan completely oblivious of the stares the junior doctors gave her.
"So you were at the hospital just now?" Meera finally said.
"Uh huh."
"And you don't know about the new DT patient that got referred to us?"
Harper's brows knitted together as she nodded her head from left to right.
Meera turned to look at her friends, confusion painted on all their faces.
"I don't understand what's happening," Harper said, clearly clueless.
As Sienna and Aurora filled Harper in on the happenings of the morning, Meera's eyes spotted Bryce, Rafael, Tobias and Kevin laughing and joking around.
"I think something must be off because I was in the hospital and I wasn't paged when the patient came in," Harper tried to reason out.
"Maybe they didn't, because you were in a surgery," Sienna optimistically said.
"Kev sent me this selfie in the Edenbrook jersey sometime before, and the background definitely doesn't look like the EB locker room," Aurora passed her phone around.
"I think we have our suspicions but it's best to confirm it from the nurses," Elijah said.
"Already on it," Jackie said, quickly typing out a text.
The group sat in silence cautiously avoiding eye contact with Meera. Who seemed deep in thought.
The ding of Jackie's phone drawed all attention towards her.
"No DT patient, Marlene just confirmed."
Meera let out a long sigh, "this all adds up. I should have known Ethan would come up with a plan to escape."
"But Ethan is not the type of person to lie about a patient," Harper put her hand on Meera's shoulder.
"I know! It was their plan," Meera got up and stomped her way towards the boys on the field.
Tobias, Kevin, Bryce and Rafael already knew something was up from the look on Meera's face.
"Hey! Meera! What's up?" Tobias tried to ease the tension but one stony look from her made him step back.
"Where were you this morning Kevin?" Meera asked, arms crossed on her chest, eyes on his tall frame.
"At the hospital," Kevin gulped.
"And why were you there?"
"I had a patient, I had to check up on."
"What was the name of the new DT patient?"
"Geo...rge, George," Tobias not so discreetly pinched him, "...gina, Georgina."
"Hmm. What were her symptoms?"
"Umm… inconsistent breathing, rapid heartbeat---"
"Woah is a team meeting going on right now?" Bryce came to Kevin's rescue.
"Drop it meathead we know," Jackie's voice came loud and clear.
"Know? What do y'all know?" Raf tried to save the sinking ship one last time.
"All about your secret little boy's club, and how y'all went behind me," Meera's voice stunned all the four men like children caught awake past their bedtime.
"I just don't understand how y'all suddenly jumped teams? Y'all have known me longer than him."
"That kind of doesn't apply to me."
"Yeah me too," Kevin and Tobias tried protesting but quickly realised their mistake from Meera's eye roll.
"I am very sure Ramsey bribed y'all. Come on people spill," Aurora backed up Meera.
A couple minutes passed with no words from either team but only heated gazes.
"Do you guys really think this is the right time for silence?" Elijah spoke first.
"Okay fine. Ethan promised us leaves," Tobias dropped the bomb.
A series of sounds of surprise and astonishment was heard from the other team.
"Seriously guys? Just for a couple day offs?" Sienna said.
Meera's lips curved into an almost devilish grin," as the head of the DT, I hereby announce no days off for both Kevin and Tobias."
Bryce sighed, which was cut by Harper, "don't you worry Lahela, I'll take care of your surgery schedule."
Everybody turned towards Raf. "I don't know about days off but I am no longer bringing my baking creations to you," Sienna's small but enraged voice surprised everyone.
"Yeah, and while we are at it, no sex for you Dr. Kevin Arnold!" Aurora rolled her eyes.
"Hey! That's not fair, what does this have to do with that?" Kevin protested.
"Okay okay guys calm down now. The game is about to start any minute now. Call Dr. Ramsey and ask him to come back right now!" Elijah spoke sense.
"On it," Bryce fished out his phone.
"No wait!" Meera exclaimed, her eyes gleaming with mischief. "I may be very angry with him right now, but I can't deny that he made a really smart plan. But if he needs to know I can be smarter."
Ethan Ramsey enjoyed his rare day off by humming to a soft opera. The medical journal which he had originally intended on reading layed untouched on his desk, he was rather busy on his laptop looking up Michelin starred restaurants to take his wife to as a "make up" for missing the game.
Setting his heart on one of the restaurants he was just about to pick up his phone to make a reservation when it started ringing. Bryce's name flashed on the screen. Confused Ethan picked up.
"Dr. Ramsey!" Bryce's panting voice came through the speaker. "Come down here fast!"
"What is happening Lahela? Breath and tell me. Did she find out?"
"No she didn't, but much worse happened! Meera got hurt, she is unconscious!"
"What?! How?! When?! Why?!"
"Come here Ethan just come here!"
"I'll be there in five!"
Bryce cut the call and everybody surrounding him burst out laughing.
"Such great acting man!" Jackie exclaimed, clutching her sides.
"Well done Bryce!" Meera said with a content smile on her face. "Now he'll know, what it's like to mess with me."
Ethan ran down the stairs towards the field, his eyes searching for a commotion, but instead he found none. Rather the field was very much the same how he had left it almost an hour ago.
He stood to catch his breath for a moment after which his blue eyes landed directly on the browns of his wife. He quickly made his way towards her.
"Meera! You are alright?! God you had me worried," Ethan proceeded to hug her. Meera expertly wriggled out of his grasp and walked away in the opposite direction.
Ethan blinked at her reatrating figure twice, when Tobias came up to him. "This is your battle Ethan, all the best!"
"Told you she'll be pissed, but if there is someone who can do this, it's you," Bryce patted his shoulder.
Ethan's first thought was of frustration which quickly changed to regret and he started following his wife.
"Meera, I am sorry. I shouldn't have lied to you. I am really sorry my love, please forgive me. I'll do anything to make it up to you." His pleas all went in vain as Meera continued to promptly ignore him.
Soon the organizers announced that the game was to begin in five minutes and Ethan was called up for the inauguration, putting a pause on his wooing plans.
The game began and Ethan was still receiving the cold shoulder. He knew he had to go big or go home.
The end of the game always grows heated. Mass Kenmore was short of five points. Meera took her place to throw the final ball. The Kenmore player hits it hard towards the third base, Bryce jumps in the air and catches it, securing Edenbrook's win!
The crowd erupts in cheers as Edenbrook supporters ran into the field wrapping the players in a hug. Ethan made his way into the crowd of doctors celebrating. Meera stood there hugging her friends and clicking pictures to treasure this moment forever.
She stopped short on seeing him. "You won't celebrate with me? I am so proud of you," Ethan said.
Meera turned to face him after which felt like an eternity.
The announcer's voice rang through the stadium, "congratulations Edenbrook on winning the 16th Annual Crosstown Softball Game! Now we have a special message from Dr. Ramsey to Dr. Bose-Ramsey."
The big screen displaying the scores throughout the entire game, now changed to show the words : "I AM SORRY".
Meera looked into her husband's blue eyes, a huge wide grin spreading across her face. She wordlessly wraps him in a hug a single tear escaping her eyes.
"Kiss! Kiss! Kiss! Kiss!" the crowd started chanting.
Meera's face turned red, kissing in front of so many people seemed absurd to her. Moreover she knew Ethan would never do it. But Ethan gently turned Meera's face to face him and closed the gap between their lips, in a kiss that was not at all chaste.
The crowd erupted in one final cheer.
"Ethan-no-PDA-Ramsey would have been very proud of this!" Jackie had to shout to make herself audible over the crowd.
"He can be both with the right person," Sienna shouted back, beaming.
Thank you so much if you have read till here, it means the world to me. Hope to see you go on other different adventures with me, Ethan and Meera, till then sending love and hugs your way! ❤️

Author's notes: I'd like to thank the following for inspiring me to do this series:
@eleanorbloom - her awesome works made me see that there’s so much more to Bryce Lahela than being a meathead and a scalpel jockey
@kat-tia801 - for the captivating AU worlds she built with her TRR series, please check her works here.
Finally, @alwaysmychoices - the same emotion you put into the stories of Charlie & Ethan is something I aspire to achieve with the characters of this fanfic series.
Without these talented writers, I wouldn't be able to get this work out to the world.
PROLOGUE
"Here's the copy of the MRI you requested for Room 502, doctor," a blonde nurse dropped an envelope on the pile already in front of her.
"Thanks Kaley," she smiled and nodded briefly from the patient charts she was finishing in the nurse's station, her brunette bangs slightly rustling at the sudden movement.
She went back to the mountain of paper work she was trying to finish, her Johns Hopkins Montblanc pen squiqqling as she went. On the bottom of the last page, she wrote her full name: Dr. Heather Song, along with her medical license number.
She opened the envelope containing the scan results, and examined the writings on the sheet of paper. No tumors - meaning that the patient's headaches were probably caused by a genetic, albeit irritating migraine. She prescribed a relaxant, and handed it to Danny, along with the rest of the clipboards.
She bit her lower lip as she tapped on her fitbit: 8:39 pm - another 14 hour shift. It was another day at work in the diagnostics team. Thankfully, she loved her job, so she has no complaints for the long hours.
Scrolling, she checked the rest of her messages. Her frown turned into a smile as she read out a text from her boyfriend:
I'm done for the day. Pick you up in 20 minutes?
She took out her phone from the pocket of her white coat and texted him back, agreeing to the said rendezvous.
With a friendly nod to the night shift nurses, she stood up and walked towards the Diagnostics office, her white sneakers squeaking along with her steps. With the door behind her hissing closed, she went to her table and retrieved her sling bag. She shoved her ID badge and her phone inside, while she shutdown her PC. She retouched her lip gloss before shrugging off her coat, revealing a blue crew neck shirt, neatly tucked into her dark jeans.
She freed her shoulder length hair from the tight bun that she usually wears at work and brushed off the few loose strands. Once she was satisfied with her appearance, she grabbed her belongings and stepped out of the empty room, making her way towards the elevator bay.
As she walked through Edenbrook's ground floor hallways, her pale skin glowed against the fluorescent lights. She crossed the atrium and bid her goodbye to Bobby, the hospital's security guard, then went outside, into the cold night air.
A green bomber jacket caught her sight, and her heart immediately skipped a beat. The tall, dark figure had a backpack slung on his left shoulder, his right foot tapping along a mental beat.
"Hey, handsome," Heather slung her arm around Rafael's, tiptoeing to plant a kiss on his cheek. "Missed me?"
Rafael chuckled, as his eyes glistened in the dark, humming in agreement. He returned the compliment with a quick peck on her lips.
He gazed down at her, "Hungry, Dr. Song?"
Heather nodded in excitement. She loved his cooking, but she missed the gelateria near his place.
Fond memories flooded her, making her smile.
A year ago, Rafael first whisked her away to the same Italian ice cream shop to decompress, seeing how stressed she was with the investigation. It was the night after she called in Travis Perry to the authorities.
Ed Farrugia was just one of those patients her team took in to increase Edenbrook's struggling funds. He was Massachusetts' most popular Senator, and the media mileage he gave the hospital prevented it from going under.
But what they first thought as just another day in the job took a turn when Heather diagnosed the politician's illness as lead poisoning. By midday, she was able to confirm that the chemical element was not coming from his newly-purchased house. A quick search engine lookup returned a suspicious article about Travis, his aide. Not wanting to make conclusions without concrete evidence, she raised her own suspicions with her mentors, Dr. Ramsey and Chief Banerji. Collectively, they decided that the best course of action was to quietly alert the authorities.
That day was the first time Rafael walked into the hospital's hallways. He got assigned to the case once Dr. Naveen called the FBI Boston field office. Rafael's discreet but valiant efforts foiled the perpetrator's sinister plans - of releasing a deadly airborne poison into the hospital room of the unknowing Senator.
He was able to stop the attack and prevented deaths, including Heather's. They later found out that the attacker wanted to take revenge on her due to her earlier attempts to treat the senator. Travis Perry admitted to sprinkling lead in the politician's assorted drinks over the years.
With the criminal charges filed and the case handed over to the district attorney's office, they were able to focus on the budding attraction between them. Several dates and a couple of samba lessons later, it bloomed into a full-on romance.
Heather easily fell for him. He was an easy guy to love. His ways are simple, uncomplicated.
He was a welcome reverie from the chaos of her first year as a junior fellow of Edenbrook's premier Diagnostics Team. It was Rafael's sweet charms that made the unbearable, bearable. His tenacity to crack the cases he was assigned to matched her own. But his motive - of always being more than willing to serve others and his community, regardless of danger, never failed to amaze her.
When they became an item, his whole community took her in. It was a sincere group of people consisted of his grandmother, his colleagues, and the elderly at the senior center where he volunteered. Rafael also frequently hung out with Heather's friends. Sienna, Elijah, Aurora and even Jackie were nothing but supportive of their relationship.
Snapping out of her head space with a gentle nudge from Rafael, they began to leave the front steps of Edenbrook. They hadn't walked far when a familiar voice calling her name stopped them in their tracks.
'Heather. Dr. Heather Song!"
Both turning around, they saw a tall man approaching them hurriedly. She had to raise her head to gaze at him as he neared.
"ADA Lahela," she saluted him in a greeting. She gave him a polite smile, letting Rafael go briefly to shake the hand of the man in the gray suit. "To what do we owe the pleasure of your company?"
"Something very urgent. I wouldn't spoil your RnR, but this really can't wait until tomorrow." Bryce Lahela, the rising star of the Boston's District Attorney's office, nodded back at Raf, catching his breathe. "Ah, Agent Aveiro, hi. I believe this also very much concerns you." he also waved at Rafael, a hint of unsteadiness in his voice.
She tried to recall the last time she saw Bryce. It was 3 months ago, on the last day of the trial of Travis Perry. The fierce young lawyer eagerly took on the case of Senator Farrugia, who single-handedly put Perry behind bars for the rest of his life.
Her head perked a little, sensing the quick falter in the young prosecutor's greeting. She waved off his apology, expressing she didn't mind the intrusion. She trusted him enough to make the judgment that this couldn't wait. They were friends after all.
"There's been a new development in the Ed Farrugia case," the assistant district attorney clutched his leather shoulder bag and pulled out a peculiar looking paper. "Someone sent a blank message to my office email address an hour ago, it included this file attachment," he handed the page to Heather, a look of concern crossing his face.
Beside her, Raf tensed.
The black and white printout, with words spelled from cutouts of magazines, knotted Heather's stomach in a million ways.
It's not over, Dr. Song.
The sinister note made her skin crawl, unleashing a wave of terror within her.
She immediately knew right then that the mirage of her quiet life threatened to crumble. She just didn't know how much.
