Iona High - rising from little to a tower of strength

Named after an island in Scotland called the Isle of Iona, where it is said the missionaries who first went there burnt their ships upon arrival, pledging never to return from whence they came, the Iona High School in Tower Isle, St Mary, has established itself as a burgeoning institution, rising from humble origins.

This year the school community celebrates the 70th anniversary of the institution’s founding in 1949 by Gwendolyn Swaby and her husband, Dr Herbert Swaby.

Giving some of the school’s history, veteran teacher and member of the planning board for a year-long celebration, Joyce Williams told the Jamaica Observer that Iona High was originally called the Folk High School and was first located at Lucky Hill, otherwise known as Goshen, in the hills of western St Mary.

Williams, who first went to the school in 1955 as a Home Economics teacher, and who worked under the tutelage of the Swabys, said the school has lived up to the purpose of its founding and continues to grow.

“I think it is wonderful that the school after 70 years, has continued, and is not only continuing but is also growing and keeps adhering to what the founder, Mr Swaby intended for this school, which is to provide an education for the poor; persons who could not afford an education at the time. He wanted to see poor, people rise above where they were and prepare them to live a life that was comfortable and in the end, make a contribution to society. The school continues to do that,” Williams said.

Having started with just four students, three girls and a boy, Iona High School is now 840 students strong, with pupils who are brimming with their own potential and achievements, also aiming to overcome the challenges.

Principal Melva Humes-Johnson, who has been at the institution for 19 years, described the milestone as “a major feat”.

“According to the word of God, 70 is really significant, and the founders had such a vision that anywhere they are now, they must be feeling very good to know that we have continued and we are growing,” said Humes-Johnson, listing some of the school’s achievements over the years.

“We have seen marked academic improvement. for example, the last set of students we sent up for CSEC, we have seen 65 per cent of those students gaining certification in CSEC. In some subjects, there have been 100 per cent pass, and 80 per cent pass in other areas.

“We do extremely well in business subjects. We have also seen over 70 per cent pass in English language. We are still working on mathematics, and we have put in many things to improve it and we have made our adjustments,” Humes-Johnson said.

The school also has a thriving extra-curricular programme, offering a chess and math club as well as a debating society that has gone up against the prominent Wolmer’s Gilrs’ School, defeating them at least once in competition. The school choir also placed second in the 2015 staging of the All Together Sing competition, and was the first high school to make it to the finals of the Dancing Dynamitecompetition placing third. All this and more, despite the lack of structural support, said Humes-Johnson.

“This is against the fact that the school does not have a theatre arts teacher. In the last set of JCDC competition we were very outstanding in the dance that we submitted, and went through to nationals. We also entered Boys’ and Girls Champs, and Eastern Champs where we split the 22 schools that participated, placing 11th, and we don’t have an on-the-ground coach. We also entered volleyball for the first time and we were called upon to be in the tournament and we went right up to semi-finals. So we know that we have talents here, where if we put certain things in place and if we get the help that we need, we would go very far,” said Humes-Johnson.

As part of the Ministry of Education’s thrust to extend schooling by two years, the school also offers exit examination certification through the Centre of Occupational Studies, in collaboration with the Moneague College, as well as the CAP (Career Advancement Programme).

Vice-Principal, Joan Peart-Armstrong told the Sunday Observer that the school has it fair share of challenges, but that the close to 60 staff members, comprising academic, administrative and ancillary, along with the students and parents, all work as a family.

“We refer to ourselves as the Iona family, so we have that type of atmosphere here. Whether it’s the parents or students, we see them as part of the family and we treat them accordingly.

“We have our students who are challenging, and where you find in some other schools they are quick to get rid of them, we work with them to find ways to find out what is happening at home, working with the parents, involving the guidance counsellor and so on to see what we can do to help those students to settle down and do well.

“Some of our students do better at the practical subjects, but because social issues and financial problems at home we from time to time, put our hands in our own pockets. We are in the tourism belt, so therefore, we try to guide them in that area so they can find jobs,” Peart-Armstrong said.

Physically, the Vice Principal also admitted that the student population has exceeded the school’s capacity, requiring at least six additional classrooms. But perhaps an interesting twist to this dilemma is the scenic beauty of the immaculate school campus. Perched on a slope overlooking the Caribbean Sea, having to sometimes host classes outside for want of classrooms offers much consolation.

“The environment in which we work, it is very pleasing to the eye and it creates that atmosphere of calm, relaxation. No matter how challenging things become, and we do have our challenges at this school, I can always step outside after dealing with a disciplinary matter. or just having work on my desk, I can step outside and I look out at the sea and I look around at the greenery and it brings some amount of calm,” said Peart-Armstrong

Student and member of the Key Club, Dejourn Lawrence shared that her school environment was something she and her peers were most proud of.

“We love our school grounds most of all. It’s always clean and during exam time or when we don’t have a classroom, we can just sit outside and enjoy the breeze.”

Long-standing groundsman, Linford Davis or “Mr Steppa” as he is called by the school community, has been awarded most outstanding worker at least three times by the Ministry of Education, and continues to serve the institution although he retired in 2016.

“From you come and see how the school look, you know that I love my job,” Davis said.

The school’s celebration kicks off today with a church service. There will also be a homecoming week in June, when a wall of fame in honour of those who have contributed to the growth of the school, will be erected. As part of the celebration, there will also be a pilgrimage to Lucky Hill.

“What we are going to do is place a plaque in Goshen in the church, which will state that the school was founded there and that continues in Tower Isle as the Iona High School,” Williams told the Sunday Observer.

The celebrations will end in November with a Founders’ Lecture.

COMM 3P18 Blog #3

Welcome to my last and final blog… at least for this class. I like to think the best for last, because these topics had me thinking about what is really going on on social media, and why? How digitization and convergence shape new media, as well as what is important to the audience in terms of both enjoyment and experience.

While reading The Influences of Sports Viewing Conditions on Enjoyment from Watching Televised Sports I could relate to multiple aspects of the perception of presence. In the article, perception of presence was defined as “the phenomenon in which an individual develops a sense of being physically present at a remote location through interaction with media”, as someone who watches a lot of mediated sports, I am able to relate to that feeling of being involved in such a way (Kim, Pg.392). Specifically, I related to immersion which is “the degree to which an individual feels involved in a particular experience and is caught up in the presentation of the media” (Kim, Pg.392). I believe that immersion can be anywhere, watching a sports game at any time. I also believe that immersion can happen at a real-life event due to the way a game is presented with media. For example, each year my friend Cassidy and I would buy each other birthday presents, as most would. During the summer I bought her Bluejays tickets because she loves baseball, and in November she bought be Raptors tickets because I love basketball. Neither of us liked the other sport, but of course, we went together to each event because we knew, either way, we would have a good time together. After reading about immersion, I couldn't help but think back to the time we went to both games, specifically the Raptors game. Screens everywhere, big flashing lights, loud announcers, all part of the experience of going to an event live. I found myself becoming more rowdy then I would watch the weekly games in my living room, and I believe this was due to all the media that was used throughout the game to create a greater audience experience. Now only was I becoming a true rowdy fan, my friend Cassidy was just as into it as I was. Thinking back to that memory, I always thought it was so strange she had so much fun cheering for a team she doesn't even follow. Although, I then thought about the atmosphere and the media that creates such a particular experience almost forcing one to become a fan. The big bright lights, large screens making you feel closer to the court than you truly are, and the loud voices of announcers heard across the stadium. These tools of media presented an experience for Cassidy that would draw her in to become a fan. I believe her immersion, was at a high degree, creating a fun experience she wasn't expecting from a basketball game.

During class and seminar, I had quite the throwback to my elementary and early high school years. I remember being so “in love” with celebrities, trying to always see what they were up to and follow their every move. I started to think about the continuum of a fandom and realized I’ve reached each level. I truly believe most people have, as Sullivan explains “We are all fans of something in today’s media-saturated environment, which makes the cultural and sociological study of fandom all the more important for understanding media audiences” (Sullivan, pg.195). Firstly a consumer, simply put as one who consumes the media content. This could be done by watching a sports event, reading tweets, or maybe watching a movie. Specifically, I believe I am only a consumer when it comes to movies. Unlike others, I never had much of an obsession when it comes to Harry Potter, or like the example of the super fan in class Star Trek. Therefore, since I've still seen them I could classify just as a consumer. Secondly, I also believe I am an enthusiast. For example, when I go to concerts, specifically this summer at All American Rejects, I went to watch them perform. Not only this I ended up buying one or their merchandise t-shirts, even so, but I would also call myself anything more than an enthusiast because I never find myself following their every move, not even following them on twitter... I don’t think they would be very funny. To be a fan is to be a fan of one's content, following them, cheering for them. Currently, I wouldn't consider myself a fan of anyone, but in high school, I was a big fan .. yep I’m gonna say it (DONT JUDGE ME) Justin Bieber. Now I wasn’t crazy, but I definitely kept up to date with his life, would watch live performances, and follow him on all social media. Lastly, the producer, the least favorite person out of the four. I was a producer when I was MUCH younger and was obsessed One Direction (double whammy ... I know). My friends and I all had fan accounts on Twitter, which was strictly to tweet about them, and only them. I definitely would have considered my group of friends super fans, there was a point where One Direction was truly the only thing we talked about. Thus, showing even though I’m not so proud of it, in my life and I think more people than who really know it, have hit each stage of the continuum of a fandom after all “the category of ‘fan’ has dramatically expanded as a result of the even smaller niche media products and platforms available today” (Sullivan, pg.195). 

After reading about Rebecca Black’s ‘It’s Friday’ video that went viral a few years ago. I truly couldn't help but laugh, mainly because I remember when that video first went viral and circulated around the school, it seemed as though every single person knew about it. Yet, I always wondered why such a terrible video and song became so popular? Even as the texts stated critics hated it as well… Although as Sullivan stated “unknown artists can create their own cultural materials and circulate them to millions of people at a time via the web, effectively bypassing the institutional gatekeepers in the traditional media” (Sullivan, pg. 214). I found this extremely interesting because it’s true… It’s so simple nowadays to make a terrible music video or post a wild photo that critics and most of the public would utterly hate, yet it would go viral! I believe due to the user-generated content such as twitter, facebook, and youtube, it becomes so simple to widespread information at such a fast pace. On the other hand, I also believe the reason it's much easier for content to go viral is partly due to the participatory culture that youtube brings to its viewers. Youtube allows users to talk to one another about the videos, to comment on each others posts, and even respond to them. Just looking at figure 9.1 on page 221 in Sullivan, youtube’s content is 50% user-generated. For an example of my own, I constantly find myself time and time again watching videos that have little to no meaning for self. Why’s this? Well scrolling through Twitter, something has gone viral, scrolling through Facebook, videos shared over and over again. I can’t stop myself from clicking to see what the fuss is all about, and that’s exactly why I end up on Youtube in the first place. But, what makes me stay is being able to look at what others think, seeing what they comment, how many views it gets, and even related videos that pop up with it. If these factors were not part of youtube, there is absolutely no chance it would have been successful as it is. Which is also the reason Instagram and Twitter have become increasingly popular as well.

During the reading Framing News in 140 Characters, I was really intrigued by the basis of the frames from both generic and issue-specific frames. Generic frames meaning they “are broad and structural themes and are limited to conflict, human interest, economic impact, responsibility and morality” (Wasike, pg.9). Issue-specific frames meaning they “are flexible and vary depending on the content being analyzed and they change based on the topic under study and the prevailing context” (Wasike, pg. 9). I mostly found it interesting when the author spoke about studies not specifically using the framing theory, but still found that it does exist in its findings. It truly made me think about what was circulating on twitter now, what news was at the top of the feed due to importance. Currently, the California fires had been circulating, not only on the news but it was literally all over my twitter! I thought for a second that this was odd but it certainly brought me in to read more about it. As I was reading I saw celebrity house after celebrity house after celebrity house, and no wonder, most celebrity issues are the ones that circulate most on twitter. It then made a lot more sense. The generic frames used in the theory that were favored were conflict, human interest, technology, and economic consequence. Why does this matter?… well, what sparks more human interest than a celebrity who is in distress over their house being burnt down?  It circulated twitter so much because it was someone who was famous, who tweeted photos and it thus, sparked human interest rather than some random person who would have tweeted about it. At the end after all who would want to read about someone who is really suffering and truly lost everything and probably has no place to go? Or even dying animals losing their homes? NO, what’s important is the celebrities who have hundreds of fans waiting for something ever so tragic to happen to them, so they can then tweet back and let them know the support they are giving.

Chapter 9, had a lot of important aspects of how new media shapes and differs every time something changes. Yet, I believe the more important topics that were talked about were the convergence of such media technologies and the digitization of all media. As said in class, we as an audience have a massive power when it comes to media now, just as the magazine Time also knew when putting the person of the year as ‘us’. Not only this But audiences have gained so much power that we overwhelm the producers. Considering we have such niche markets, there is so many smaller groups that ask for so much at the same time, and how could anyone keep up with that? I found it interesting that quite a few YouTubers are one by one taking time away from posting videos for subscribers due to being overwhelmed. So I got to thinking during class (weird, I know), but, when Jenn asked “are you happy? Does digital technology make you feel good? And who has the power?”  I really questioned a lot of media technologies that I use. What uses do I get from them? Are they keeping me entertained... Well yes, of course. But, am I happy with how I’m spending my time, watching things I don't even want to watch, not really. But in the end, I do believe that the audience holds the power, they have shut down corporations, and even taken away the middleman.

Hi, I am interested in people's views of the following: A friends daughter is 17 and last Friday passed her driving test to much family celebration. She went out driving to see her friends, grandparents, and to get some experience. On the Monday the family tried to get insurance quotes but hadn't made a decision on which one to go with until Tuesday. Tuesday lunch she went out with three girlfriends and lost control of her car. No-one was seriously hurt but there are some stiff necks, bumps and bruises. She rolled the car after losing control over a hump back bridge. No other vehicles were involved but her own car is written off. The Police were called and paramedics. She is still on Provisional Insurance as the call hadn't been made to change the insurance, mum and dad were just moving money about so they can pay. The Police say she wasn't speeding just lacked experience and was taken by surprise on the road in question in the rain. So the questions for them are: 1. What is the legal position? Neither parent is concerned about making an insurance claim or anything like that. It was one of those awful moments in life and they are not interested in the value of the car just the welfare of the girls. 2. What does she have to present to the Police - I think they said that she would have to present her licence? 3. Do the parents have to tell the insurance company if they don't intend to claim? They are very honest people but don't want to do anything that would unnecessarily impact their daughters ability to move forward. 4. What should they do going forward with her? Problem with car insurance?

From Joni Mitchell to Laura Marling: how female troubadours changed music

Singing about drugs, politics and disappointment was once seen as a male pursuit and almost half a century after female artists began to defy convention, many are still trying break the mould

In the summer of 1969, Newsweek published an articleunder the headline The Girls Letting Go, charting the burgeoning careers of a group of young musicians it termed a new school of talented female troubadours. They sang about politics, love affairs, the urban landscape, drugs, disappointment, and the life and loneliness of the itinerant performer subjects that, hitherto, had largely been the preserve of male musicians. What is common to them to Joni Mitchell and Lotti Golden, to Laura Nyro, Melanie, and to Elyse Weinberg, the writer, Hubert Saal, observed, are the personalised songs they write, like voyages of self-discovery what they celebrate is the natural, preferring the simple joy to the complex, the artless to the artful and, rather than the holding back, the letting go.

There have been many new female troubadours in the years since fromPatti Smith to Lucinda Williams, Emmylou Harris and Carole King all of them writing and singing across aperiod in which womens liberation made great strides. Today, almost 50 years since Saals article, womens lives are markedly different from the way they were in 1969, but has the world of women in song evolved as markedly?

We are at a peculiar point in the music industry: female artists such as Taylor Swift, Beyonc and Katy Perry have been among the industrystop earners in recent years, yet womens presence elsewhere in the industry is sparse, and female performers are thin on the ground at the summer music festivals. While this has generated much media discussion, how have female songwriters responded?

This early stretch of the year brings releases by several songwriters who might fall into that troubadour category. Artists such as Laura Marling, Courtney Marie Andrews, Julie Byrne and Nadia Reid are writing songs that capture the pulls of both domesticity and the road, and what it means to be living a life that does not entirely tally with convention.

Marlings sixth album, Semper Femina, follows last years Reversal ofthe Muse podcast series, in which she spoke to musicians such as Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Marika Hackman, as well as women elsewhere in the industry, such as guitar shop owner Pamela Cole and recording engineer Olga FitzRoy, to explore femininity in creativity from the challenges of writing, recording and touring, to the masculine design of guitars and the fact that women hear differently from men.

I would say that feminine creativity is inherently different from the masculine, says Marling. Even at its beginnings, she suspects that womens musical impulses have different motivations from those of their male counterparts. I had a lot of chats with Blake [Mills, Semper Feminas producer] when we were making the record, about how we started playing guitar, she says. And he was like: I started playing because I wanted to impress girls. And that was obviously so different from why I started playing guitar that was never in my brain, toimpress boys. So even that crucial difference makes for a different musician. For me, playing guitar has always been tied up with my identity rather than enticing people in, its always been involved in myself.

This album emerged after a time inwhich Marling felt that she had become increasingly masculine determinedly touring alone, lugging her own gear, stepping away from ideas of feminine dress. While this stretch was not long-lived, she believes it gave her an ability to look at women in a different way and consider how Id been looked at. She is resistant to being pigeonholed. I think, when Iwas a teenager, in my head you were either this delicate tragedy or you were a muse, she says. And theyre both such horrifyingly subjugated roles.

She was struck, too, by an old edition of Desert Island Discs in which Marianne Faithfull was the castaway. The presenter said: So, tell me, you must have felt very hard done by that all the Rolling Stones deserted you? And she said: Can you stop trying to make a tragedy of me? Im not a tragedy! Ive lived my life. Obviously, I was a drug addict, but I was always going to be a drug addict. I had an amazing time! And its true, by any other masculine name, all those experiences would be clocked up as experiences and nothing more.

But ideas of what women in music should be are hard to shake. There is animpulse to make an easy tragedy of female musicians who have spent their lives on the road. There is something, too, that expects women to be static, indoor, domesticated and confessional songwriters. As the late John Berger put it: Men act, women appear.

Crucial to this is the idea of women and movement women stepping outside the safe confines of the home and domesticity. For Julie Byrne, the compulsion to keep moving has run intandem with her career as a songwriter. I was always fascinated by thatlifestyle, she recalls. When I was living in Buffalo, New York, where Im from, there was a huge contingency of freight-train hoppers. There was a pretty legendary house in Buffalo called the Birdhouse that was well known in that network. So there was this huge influx of travellers in the summertime, and thered be really glorious parties with music until the early hours I think this was probably where this sense of wonderment camefrom.

In her teens, a year after she began playing music, Byrne toured with some friends, travelling through Pennsylvania, Ohio, Tennessee and South Carolina. She remembers the joy of that time the new landscapes, playing live, trying to navigate their way to the next city in the days before Google Maps and smartphones. I think it just strengthened all the curiosity I had, she says. I wanted to continue to learn through my experiences that way.

This is not to suggest it was without problems. We were in my friends old Volvo that had a leak in the gas tank, she says. We ended up running out of gas and were stranded on the highway somewhere outside Memphis. That was my first experience of being outside New York state and everything was enchanted. Breaking down, all of it. There was poetry in everything for me then, and I think a lot about that time, how moving just the most mundane aspects were for me when I was younger.

Her experience of the touring life has changed with the years while she retains some of that early wonderment, she also sees its limitations. Her most recent album, Not Even Happiness, was written largely in the time that Byrne was touring its predecessor, Rooms With Walls and Windows, when she gave up the place she had in Seattle, along with her furniture and most of her belongings, because I couldnt afford to maintain a room somewhere while I was on the road constantly.

That weightlessness brought a new quality to her music. A lot of these songs come from the power and the beauty of travel and of relying on the generosity of other people, she says. But also the pain of not having any privacy and not having anywhere to goto weep for the condition of the world or the condition of my own heart, so that was a time of extreme vulnerability. But I think that brought on some meaningful realisations in my life that you carry your burdens wherever you go, and they dont just fall away just because youre across the country or in a different setting. They stay with you until theyre resolved in some way.

Courtney Marie Andrews left her home in Phoenix, Arizona, when she was 16 and began busking along the west coast of America. I just fell in love with the lifestyle, she says. At that time I was so young and so ready to get out of Phoenix I just felt trapped there, and I realised there was so much more to the world. I loved making music with my friends every day, and being in different cities. I thrive on change, and I really felt drawn to the constant movement.

She soon found work, first as a backing singer for other artists, then playing lead guitar for Damien Jurado, and her life on the road ran on. It was only more recently, after the end of aserious relationship, that she began to consider the drawbacks of a rootless lifestyle. It is a subject she addresses on her latest album, Honest Life, setting all the nights of travelling, playing, eating alone in diners and sleeping in vans against the pleasures of a home and community.

I wrote those songs because Irealised Id spent pretty much my entire later adolescence and early 20s on the road, she says. Id come home and people had cultivated these really in-depth relationships, and I started topine for that. Id be home just for amonth and that would be it. The pluses are playing your songs every night with your friends you cant really complain. But the thing you missis the human connection. That canbecome really hard. You say: Hi, my names Courtney! 500 times on atour.

The trials of life on the road is not an unfamiliar subject for songwriters, but for female musicians there are additional weights: centuries of women being expected to stay at home, as well as the constrictions of time and biology; the music industry is not set up to accommodate parenthood, let alone the physical demands of motherhood. There is also the suspicion that greets women who dont quite conform.

For Byrne, life in freefall is something that can grant womens songwriting extra force and insight. Ithink that women living lifestyles with no fixed home and really having to be at the mercy of that experience will probably transcend that [more traditional] mould, she says. I think women have a certain vision that is so deeply connected to their interior lives, and I think women are inherently willing to be very vulnerable, and have an honesty that theyre willing to share with other people. And thats the most powerful thing there is.

Andrews is similarly hopeful that these songs of the road will still have the capacity to affect their listeners. Its so funny, I always thought, Well, this is just how it is, she says. But its very true [traditionally] men touch on this life in their songs and women talk about domestic issues or their husbands. But I hope that women, or just people in general, can empathise with those stories coming from a woman. Because anybody can live that kind of lifestyle.

Nearly half a century after that first wave of new female troubadours, it seems women songwriters are still muddling out a way to be. But however gradual, what we are witness to is stillan evolution, a slow bucking of convention, women singing songs that tell of a new life and its possibilities; 50 years on they are still letting go.
