I love your headers!! Would you be willing to show your previous ones? I like how they evolve as you find new interests :D
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ASKING OH MY GOD.
For a bit of context, for a few fucking YEARS my tumblr header was a userbox that just read "This user's special interest is Steven Universe". I kept wanting to change it, but I didn't have anything else to change it to, and I was always hesitant because it was always still too accurate. So I pulled this psychological experiment on myself and I succeeded and I got SUUUUUUPER hyperfixated on Good Omens and decided to make THIS!!!!!!
Tumblr media
I still love this!! It's my second favorite iteration of the header because look at these colors they're so damn nice! I made this header with the express purpose of changing it as I get new super big hyperfixations, also I just felt the need to add a disclaimer to my blog LMAO I was reblogging SO DAMN MUCH FANART. That's basically all I reblogged 😭 The plan was always to watch the header have leftovers of whatever other interests I got. Along the way new things will come and occupy most of the space in my head, but there will still be remnants of the other things I love and have loved. This header is and will continue to be a visual representation of that and it's beautiful
Tumblr media
Now here comes S\herlock & Co., which at the time was actually maybe my most intense hyperfixation ever. Like I mean I was thinking about this shit all day. I haven't shared as much art in AGES. I thought it'd be really fun to just cover up Good Omens with cardboard, but it really didn't look like cardboard, and the tape would be like disproportionately huge lmao. My fave part about this then was how the tape had little air bubbles. My favorite part about it now is probably that you can still see the "G" from the original header, and that the L in Sherlock is capital by accident. I have this real habit of accidentally writing uppercase letters at random when I get too excited. Usually it's in the start of words though lmao :P Also you can see how I specifically didn't plan out the spacing because of the large gap after "Co." that I filled with a smiley. During this time I also had my FIRST EVER profile picture change on tumblr. I'd had the same profile picture since I JOINED. My discord friends, especially those who see me using PK, know damn well we're indicisive with our PFPs lmao so changing a pfp we'd had for a long time was a big thing for us
I also changed the background color on this. In my head this is in like 5 different layers. The unaffected arch around my PFP, the color changing background (that still remains in the same kind of gradient, though), the color changing "I just have AuDHD", the permanent "This isn't a Good Omens themed blog I swear", and then everything else I can put on top. This totally isn't how it works, but I'm imagining the background as like an LED kind of thing hehehe :3c
Tumblr media
Oh boy. Iden part 2. I was NOT in a good space during this time. I didn't know what to do with myself, what kind of fandoms to turn to instead and whatnot, and I wasn't ready to let go of this thing that had been so good to me before. That's why I just scribbled red marker over the "& Co." part and changed the smiley to a frowny. Because I was NOT feeling :). I also really liked how the marker went onto the background. It was an accident but I kept it.
Tumblr media
Aaaaand away with Sherlock!! I. Got. So. Fucking. Hyperfixated. On. Paper Mario Origami King. Oh my god. I played it so much it hurt. That's the first Mario game I ever finished, as far as I remember as well omg asgsjghaf
Mario has been a special interest before, and it made a grand return!!! My faves are Peach and Bowser and they always will be. And I LOVE Mario Kart ok?
I also started to listen to Find Us Alive here :D I was working over summer and it took me an hour to take the bus home, so I'd listen to FUA as I played Paper Mario :P it was BEAUTIFUL ✨
I also changed my pfp back to the one I had for years at that point I couldn't stand having the previous one anymore
Oh and look at Super Mario. It says SuPer Mario. With a capital P. I did NOT do that on purpose ashgsajask
Tumblr media
Derpy Hooves. Derpy Hooves. DERPY HOOOOOVES!!!!
I've loved My Little Pony for AGES and Derpy's always been one of my faves. This is when I tipped over the edge though heahgshdjsf
I drew the hearts because this is when I changed to my Derpy Hooves pfp :D
Oh and see how the "E" in Derpy is capital?? Told you I had a thing lmao
This wasn't all that intense of a hyperfixation, so I knew it wouldn't last long. I didn't have anything to replace it with, though. UNTIIIIIIIIL...
Tumblr media
Oh my GOD, look at this beauty. It's my favorite so far. I'm trying to make the gradients match the colors I associate my current Biggest Thing with, and right now it's a beautiful black white and red combo. I didn't make it all black though, because the header would be entirely unreadable. Look at this, it's a mess. It's painted over all willy nilly. There's marker still visible. That one piece of tape is STILL there. There's HOLES in it for heaven's sake! And... Is that the spray paint from the Mario iteration?!!! Good fucking lord this is a mess. Look at how horribly spaced all that text is. Did I even plan for this?! Those flowers look so silly! Dumptruck is here...? He's not even IN this podcast!!! I fucking love it so much you have no idea. "Glass explodes ok?" is one of my fave references. Glass explosion chamber 2024
I'M SO EXCITED TO SEE HOW IT WILL CHANGE EVEN FURTHER I LOVE MY HEADER SO MUCH THANK YOU SO SO MUCH FOR THIS ASK!!
If anyone wants to do something like this, go ahead!! ^w^

I'm bad at explaining broad processes, so this is going to be very... stream of consciousness. that being said, I'll try to explain a little bit of it!
also for disclosure's sake, this alt was actually earlier in the process than the final monochrome version, and I tend to destructively edit as I go without remembering to save different project files, so what I'm gonna explain here bounces around a bit
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
okay so, unfortunately, going through my layers raises more questions than answers without context lmao
when I'm doing inkwork-heavy pieces like this one, I usually work entirely in black and white, smearing the shapes together with a bleed-heavy pen and a slightly less bleedy brush
in general, I'm a firm believer in not fighting the texture of the brush you're using. if you need to a lot to get wispy shapes from your brush, you need to use a wispier brush
if it seems weird that I use a bleed-heavy pen but not a bleed-heavy brush, I think that's weird, too! the best way I can explain it is that I've always found it frustrating when my paints bled in unexpected ways, but associated an overbleeding pen with one that wasn't running out of ink
... not entirely rational, I'll concede.
but anyway, why black and white? why not use a slightly tinted dark tone, like shows up a lot in my finished pieces?
there's a lot of reasons I can make up for why I do that, but the most straightforward and (unfortunately) revealing one is that I do it because, if I'm drawing entirely in black and white, I never have to layer-hunt to erase
... I just make a new layer on top and paint white over the old one
Tumblr media
this is also why I like using mspaint when I'm not really up for doing anything particularly advanced. layers are great and I love them dearly, but sometimes it feels like they're more annoying than helpful
so in general, my method for actually blocking things out can be roughly described as "start drawing it and don't stop until it's done, and if you don't like it, your wip is now a reference layer and it's time to use it to redraw the entire piece"
not... entirely good as advice
in fact, I'd strongly advise you don't internalise that. looks pretty cool, though, sometimes. maybe explaining myself here is a bad idea, because it's going to give other people my deeply unwell habits.
anyway.
when framing a piece, I'm usually just fucking with things by eye until they look about interesting enough to me. in general, I'm a big proponent of leaving tools around that can be generally described by "things you can fuck around with"
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
effects like this are achieved mostly by duplicating the image, filtering the duplicated layer, possibly gradient mapping it to get some colours, and then using that as a mask of some kind. this often entails deleting chunks of the new layer when things start overlapping in unpleasant ways
if you're willing to keep a folder of textures around, you can actually use posterisation + gradient mapping + blending modes to work your textures into some really weird setups
if I'm planning on using a really colourful background or frame for whatever reason, I find that one way to create a pseudo-depth effect is to duplicate the linework, mosaic it, layer the mosaic below your actual lines, and then erase all of the chunky pixels inside of the subject proper
in the process of making the final version of a piece I post, it's really not uncommon for me to have up to nine versions of the linework layered on top of each other, set to darkening different portions of the art
as for framing proper... sometimes it's literally just throwing things on the edge of the image until it looks balanced to my eye, then ctrl+a, then shrink selection [X] pixels until I get a border that looks nice
hope there was at least something of value in that! admittedly, it seems like it was mostly just a reveal of how messy my desk is

Hey there, love your comic and your blog! Big new vegas boy here also and I'm trying my darndest to make my first OC in this world I love so much, do you have any tips on how to get started? Also, any tips on getting started with digital art? Assuming you use a tablet, any recommendations? Do I even need one? Sorry if these questions are silly or whatever, ty in advance :)
Hi! Thanks for being a fan and writing in! I’ll take them in the order you gave me. I’ve answered questions about developing characters and writing before here and here so you may interested in my commentary there.
As far as getting started on digital art...lmao, anon, I’m sorry but I’m absolutely not the right person to ask about this. My journey into digital art is very unorthodox. I do all of my art in pencils on paper first and then scan it; I do not own or use a tablet, and hell I didn’t even own a scanner until eight or so issues into my comic and before that I’d just try to take very clear pictures of my art with my phone.
All of my digital art is made by taking my scanned pencils or inks and then fucking around with them in GIMP - a freeware image editing software that I have used for ten years but no sane artist would recommend over something like CSP today. “Fucking around” usually entails converting my inks (if I inked my art) to two-tone black and white, which is very friendly for area-select or paint-bucket style coloring. Coloring my comics or other art is a slow process of coloring individual areas one at a time. I use gradients, brushes, and collage to add specific texture or background or lighting effects when necessary. As you can see with my recent art, I’ve been experimenting with skipping the inks and embracing the roughness of my pencils by combining them with high-contrast colors, to very pleasing effect, I think. I’m hoping to incorporate some of this experimentation into IKROAH.
I know my explanation of my process wasn’t very good, but like I said, I am the last person on the planet who should be teaching anybody anything about digital art. But my process is the way it is because I wanted to make digital art, and I made use of what I knew and what I had. I taught myself how to convert and color my own pencils, and despite my limitations I really am proud of the style I’ve developed, especially my recent pieces. I hope that if nothing else, you can take that ethos to heart as you figure it out yourself.

誕生日おめでとう!! (part 2)
a continuation of collab w @polar-stars
10:30 AM EST, February 14th
“How does one art?” asked the tenchou with a depressed groan.
Lea glanced over at the tenchou’s screen. Thirty-three shots of espresso and half a latte macchiato later, they were done writing the fic and the tenchou was now staring down what vaguely resembled a chaotic slew of random lines and squiggles.
“Are you doing abstract art?” Lea asked curiously.
Reina gave her a look. “This is just the first layer.”
It took all her self control and then some not to laugh, but Lea managed to clear her throat and resume working on her masterpiece.
“I need a break,” the tenchou announced. “I’m going to buy food. Do you want anything?”
Lea shook her head. “I had breakfast on the plane. Thanks for putting me in business class, by the way.”
“Of course! I have a shit ton of mileage.”
It was no surprise when the store manager returned bearing five shots of espresso. “I’m setting a deadline,” Reina explained when Lea raised a concerned eyebrow. “I’ll be done with the art before I finish the coffee.”
“I thought you were getting food?”
Reina waved it off and sat down. “Brain food.” She cracked her knuckles and rolled her neck. “Crunch time.”
Intrigued at the sudden life in the tenchou’s eyes, Lea gave a smirk. “See you on the flip side.”
under the cut :}
4:00 PM EST, February 14th
“How does… one… gradient?”
It had been approximately five and a half hours of radio silence between the two in the cafe. The New York afternoon was flitting by but neither registered the time nor the passersby making the most of their Valentine’s Day; every single one of their senses was honed in on their screens and the food (because Lea insisted that no, the tenchou could not in fact survive solely off caffeine).
“What program are you using?” Lea asked without looking up from Kuvira’s left eyebrow.
“I invested in Clip Studio recently. Fuck! That clears the canvas.”
Lea pointed at the left dock while simultaneously contouring Kuvira’s eyelid. “The gradient is under the brush.”
“Oh! Thank you.” Reina messed around with the background gradient for what had to be at least twenty years. Then she sat back with a relieved sigh and said, “I’m done.”
Lea examined Reina’s screen and the gradient—or rather, lack thereof.
“Where’s the gradient?”
Reina blinked. “That is the gradient. Jujutsu Kaisen but pastel.”
Gradient, my ass, Lea thought with a pronounced eyeroll, and the tenchou laughed as if she knew what Lea was thinking.
“My handwriting is giving me an aneurism,” she continued, “and I seriously don’t know what Akane is sitting on, but it is how it is. Are you done yet?”
“Just about,” Lea said, adding final touches to Baatar’s glasses. “Should I call the birthday girl now?”
The tenchou nodded and saved the Krita file—to lose progress now would be tragic indeed. “Tell her to be here tomorrow morning at nine and ask her what her favorite coffee is. I’ll get the fic printed in 52 point font when I go back to Jyard tonight. Care to get dinner?”
For what must’ve been the first time since they’d sat down that morning, Lea took the opportunity to absorb how gorgeous New York City actually was, the sunset an idyllic canvas streaked with pastels. “Have we seriously been sitting in this cafe for six hours? Do you even know how many couples should’ve been enjoying the cityscape from this table?”
Reina shrugged and Lea wondered if she should admire or chastise how emotionally dead the tenchou was. “You’re my interim Valentine’s date. Let them deal with it.”
[ok ok listen i have no clue what kind of restaurants are in nyc so we’re just ~casually~ skipping that scene]
9:00 AM EST, February 15th
The birthday girl had just sat down in the otherwise empty cafe when a waitress approached her. [also do wait staff approach you in cafes or are you supposed to order of your own volition bc i have 0 memory of pre covid]
“One cappuccino, please,” she requested, and she swore she saw a flicker of recognition in the waitress’ eyes.
In a few minutes the waitress returned with the cappuccino… and a latte macchiato and ten iced americanos.
The birthday girl’s eyes bugged out. “Um… I don’t think this is the right order?”
“It’s the right order,” said the conservatory student with a knowing grin.
Just as the birthday girl opened her mouth to courteously question just what kind of caffeine-addicted dumbass one would have to be to drink a dozen coffees in one sitting, Lea appeared out of nowhere and added, “It is most definitely the right order.”
“Nah,” corrected the tenchou. “There were supposed to be twelve of mine but Lea made me cut two.” And then they dumped all seventy-two pages of heavyweight paper on the birthday girl lmao ok yeah that is not good for the environment but hey it’s yo birthday! hope your 2021 is completely crammed with joy and fortune and lots of good food. you are an amazing writer and human being with some litass electromagnetic oscillations, so keep living life as always :}
