🌸What do you think about the aesthetics of Lotto’s MV?

(*OED. Just so we are all on the same page, this is what I mean when I talk about an MV’s ‘aesthetics’, I mean it in the philosophical way, as in, the beautiful aspects, or the aspects that are designed to be beautiful.)

Lotto for me is a great example of that era in Kpop, and the larger aesthetic/trope of the ‘beautifully dirty’. This is an aesthetic that EXO do really well, despite them all being very pretty (and mostly quite slim) men and the aesthetic of ‘beautifully dirty’ being often, at least in western media, dominated by overtly muscular, masculine bodies. 

Instead of using it as much as they do in Monster, here in Lotto its more about dangerousness and darkness than actual dirt. You can see this in the dark styling of Soo and Baekhyun, in addition to the ‘dangerous’ clothing, makeup and attitudes (burning money/carrying baseball bats w/ nails) of Suho, Chanyeol, Sehun… 

Notice also how many freaking tilted close ups we have in this MV! It’s all about looking at them through ‘broken/altered’ lenses, like the jail bars, through glass, through mirrors…  

Lotto also deals with the elegant, and you can see this at work in Kai & Jongdae’s looks/characters (and Minseok’s…when you catch a GLIMPSE of him). Kai & Dae are exceptionally elegant in their styling and demeanour in the MV, even when Kai’s setting fire to shit he does it elegantly!

Obviously Lotto’s MV is very concerned with money and you can see the expression of money = elegance or refinement in both Dae and Kai. 

Finally, I’d be completely remiss if I didn’t mention the aesthetics at work in the choreo shots because wow isn’t that one of the best bits about Lotto?!? This section is so simply designed, (its literally just a swinging chandelier and darkness!) and it conveys so much thematically with its simplicity. You don’t need to know where you are, or what’s happening to you; all you need to focus on is them. Or at least that’s what the shot’s telling me…..
