Mama’s Girl Part 1

Summary: Chris Navigating being a single dad to a teenage girl until an unexpected visitor arrives

Warnings: Swearing, Crying, Underage drinking, Drug use (weed), Teenage pregnancy, toxic parents, talks of comas. Lmk if i’ve missed anything

A/N: THIS IS NOT A PREGNANCY TROPE. This chapter makes it seem like one but it is not. i didn’t write this Chapter, my best friend did and has asked me to continue the story because she quit tumblr. I’ll try and get the next part out asap.

PRESENT DAY

“It's okay baby come on,” Chris said as he gently moved his extremely high daughter up the stairs as she continued to bawl her eyes out.

“I’m sorry, i’m sorry, i’m sorry” She repeated over and over again as she clung onto her dads night shirt.

It broke Chris’ heart to see his little girl this upset. He forever cursed the day her mother left. He cursed it because it meant that Adira was never given a proper mother child relationship that she needed. It meant that she was subject to such heavy bullying because she never knew what the love of a mother felt like. It meant that she forever blamed herself for seeing her Father crumbling because the love of his life had vanished. It meant that when she was only 5 she had to bang on Matt’s door with her little fists in tears because she couldn't wake her dad up. It meant that at 4 she had to knock on Nick’s door and ask him to take her to school because her dads bedroom door was locked. It meant that Chris almost ruined his whole career by nearly having his own child ripped from his hands.

But after years of trying hard to fix himself up and care for his daughter, he and Adira were finally happy it had all been destroyed by one singular phone call. A phone call that brought back all those old emotions that Adira had been suppressing. Those feelings of guilt, sadness, and anger came rushing back but now she had a way to get rid of those feelings.

Weed.

Chris didn’t know where she got it from or where she got the money for it, but Chris knew weed and he knew that it would have had to be pretty damn strong to put here in this state.

“I ruined everything, dad I'm so so sorry. I've never done it before I promise, I'm just tired of feeling sad, I'm so so tired” She cried as they got to the top of the staircase.

Chris’ heart broke once again.

“It’s okay baby, this is hard on you I know it is. It’s gonna be okay.” He cooed as he helped her to her bedroom.

He very gently laid her on her bed, wiping her tears away with his thumb as he fought with himself to keep his own tears at bay. Sometimes he hated how much she looked like her because it was a constant reminder of what he had lost. Don’t get him wrong, Chris loved his daughter with every single bone in his body and thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world, but he also loved her mother. He loved her mother more than he could even fathom and  though people always said she looked like Chris he couldn’t help but see so much of her mother in her.

He gently took off her shoes, putting them in her wardrobe before sitting her up against her headboard and using a makeup wipe to wipe away the makeup she was wearing, wiping away tears that fell in the process.

“Okay baby, let's get you into bed now,” Chris said as he laid her back down on the bed and put the blanket over. Adira only cried harder at that, “What’s wrong baby?” he asked, pushing her hair away from her face.

“Please don’t leave me, I'm scared of being alone please don’t leave me alone.” Adira gripped onto Chris’ hand desperate for some sort of presence in the room with her. 

“I’m not going anywhere Bambi, I'm just gonna tuck you in and I'm gonna stay right here.” Chris whispered as he calmed his daughter down and then laid beside her, allowing her to snuggle up into his side and lay there till she fell asleep.

2 WEEKS INTO PREGNANCY

“Hey, Y/n…you okay? You look…nervous,” Justin asked as he stepped out of the way for her to enter.

“Yeah, yeah I'm fine. Urm is Chris here? I really need to talk to him.” Y/n asked, playing with the bracelets on her wrists as a way of trying to calm herself down.

“Yeah, he’s in his room,” Justin said as he pointed upstairs. Justin had always viewed Y/n as a little sister, he really did care for her deeply and seeing her this distressed really just didn’t sit right with him. He knew something was up but he also knew Y/n would simply shut down if he dared say anything so he just let her go, hoping that he would somehow get to the bottom of whatever it is that was bugging her.

Y/n didn’t bother knocking on Chris’ door, she gently opened the door and spotted him at his computer typing away at something.

“Hey Chris,” Y/n started as she gently shut and locked his door. She couldn’t afford any sort of distractions from the rest of Chris’ family. She needed this to happen and she needed it to happen now.

Chris momentarily looked up before going back to his computer screen, “Hey babe, just give me one second to finish this post and ill be right with you.” 

Y/n sat on his bed nervous as ever, trying to rehearse what she was going to say. How exactly do you tell your boyfriend he accidentally got you pregnant at 17 and your parents are just about ready to kill him? And how was she supposed to prepare for his reaction? Chris’ could decide to run. He could decide he didn’t want to be a part of this child's life, he could decide to break up with her on the spot. He could…

“What’s up mama,” Chris interrupted her thought as he crashed onto his bed next to her, a love sick smile plastered on his face. She winced at the word ‘Mama’ knowing that it was now or never.

“Chris’ i need to tell you something and it’s really important.” Y/n said quietly as tears started to well in her eyes. Chris noticed this and his mind immediately went to what he thought was the worst, 

“Did you cheat on me?” He asked, looking down.

 “What? No, why would you even think that.”

 “Are you breaking up with me?” 

“No, but I might if you don’t shut up.” Chris looked up at her confused. “Then what is it?”

Y/n took a deep breath, she needed to tell  him before it was too late.

She looked him dead in the eye, a single tear falling as she whispered

“I’m pregnant Chris.”

Present day

Half an hour later, Chris was crying in his brother's bed as he clung onto Nick. They had been in this position before, Adira asleep in one room and Chris having a breakdown in the other.

“It’s not your fault Chris,” Nick whispered as he gently moved his curls out of his face “You couldn’t have done anything to stop it. She snuck out, it's not your fault.”

“I got Y/n pregnant, I put her in that coma, i didn’t step up as a father to Adira until it was almost too late. And now she’s high as a kite in her room. All this is my fault, i fucked everything up.” Chris cried.

Nick could only attempt to comfort him the best he could, trying to be as quiet as possible not to wake Adira up.

“She’s gonna be okay Chris, everything's gonna be okay.” Nick soothes

“they said she asked for me. She asked to see me. I don't think I can do it, Nick.” Chris chuckled a bit, “It’s sort of funny, for years i begged her to wake up and now she’s finally up i can’t bring myself to see her.”

Nick knew he was only laughing as a coping mechanism but he still put a smile on his face, When he heard the news that Y/n had woken up, it was like everything in the world stopped. He didn’t even get any more news before he threw his phone on the floor, smashing it in the process. Luckily Matt just happened to be in the room with him and had taken control of the current situation, getting the information needed form the doctor and trying to calm Chris down from the panic attack he was very clearly having.

Nick tightened his grip on his crying brother and simply whispered “It’s okay Chris, everything will be okay.”

8 WEEKS INTO PREGNANCY

“What do you mean you’re leaving the school?” Chris questioned as his Girlfriend sat on his bed, watching him pace around his bedroom

“My parents want me out before anyone can notice, they said i'm starting to show and that some people were confused as to why i went from wearing tank tops to hoodies. They just want to be safe. They said homeschooling was the best option for me.” Y/n replied, struggling to keep her eyes open.

“Yeah, well what do you think?” Chris asked and Y/n stopped. Come to think of it, so far she hadn’t really been asked what she thought about much regarding the pregnancy. Her mother had forced the brand new clothes, brand new curfew, brand new extracurriculars, brand new skin appointments. She sorted out all the artificial things whereas her dad made sure that there were cameras all over the house. He installed locks that only he had the key for, he boarded up certain windows to shop for any sort of ‘unneeded attention’. She had no say in how she felt, what she wanted, what restrictions she felt were going too far. She didn't even get a say in whether she wanted to keep the pregnancy or not so she hadn’t really thought about what she thought about the whole ordeal.

“I don’t wanna not see you or my friends throughout the day, you guys are the only thing in my life that brings me any sort of joy right now, but i also don't want to ruin my parents name. I can’t be the downfall to their success Chris… I just can't.” Y/n’s parents (Lilly and Tommy) owned a major law firm, one that was currently making insane amounts of money but even a small scandal such as a teenage pregnancy could potentially affect their number of clients and so the couple had opted to hide her pregnancy until Y/n the 2 can be passed of as  a sister or cousin.

“I hate this so much Chris. I hate that this pregnancy is ruining my senior year. I hate that I feel guilty about not wanting a child yet, I hate that I've dragged you into this, I hate that your family might view you differently now, I hate that I've strained your youtube career, I just… i just hate all of this”Y/n confessed, finally getting everything off her chest.

Chris just walked over to her and rapped his hands around her waist and whispered into her ear, “I'm gonna visit you everyday. I’ll bring Matt and Nick too, and we're gonna help you through everything. We’re gonna make sure you’re not isolated at all. We’re gonna pick out baby clothes, we’re gonna find out the gender together, we’re gonna stay up for hours talking about baby names, we’re gonna be okay. Imma get my papers straight and imma come straight to you baby, i promise. How does that sound?

No answer

“Y/n?” Chris asked as he looked down to see her asleep.

Fatigue, Chris thought to himself as he layed her down on his bed and threw a blanket over her, finally letting her sleep.

11 WEEKS INTO PREGNANCY

“Are you out of your mind?” Mary-Lou screamed at Lilly and Tommy, “How dare you even consider such a horrible thing!”

“Mary-lou, I understand this may be hard for you to understand but this is what needs to happen. Think of everything this pregnancy has put at stake. Separating Y/n and Chris may be the best option right now.”

“That child has 2 parents, one of which is Chris who is willing to care for both Y/n and the baby. How dare you try to take that from him!” Jimmy exclaimed

Chris’ grip on Y/n’s hand tightened and his other hand continued to stroke her hair as they listened to the argument that their parents were having downstairs.

“This is such bullshit!” Matt exclaimed from his seat on his couch, “I mean neither of you want to be separated and Y/n isn’t gonna want to go through a pregnancy alone so why would they even consider separating the 2 of you?”

“They’re trying to ignore the whole thing. Stop the chances of anyone finding out and I guess getting rid of Chris was the best way of doing that. I mean then I have nobody to go baby clothes shopping with or complete ultra sounds and stuff like that, reducing the chance of me wanting to do them.”

“That still doesn't make it right, or fair! I mean, i don't understand wh-”

“Christopher, Y/n! Get down here at once!” Tommy screamed

“Good luck,” Nick said to the pair as they got up and made their way downstairs. Lilly was sat on one side of the large dining table and Tommy was stood behind her and Jimmy and Mary-lou were both on the other side of the table.

“Christopher, i know this may be hard on both of you but we have decided that it would be best if you and Y/n are to be separated for a little time, then when the baby come we can schedule meeting times and-”

“No. Absolutely not. You’re not taking my child or my girlfriend from me.” Chris stated firmly. He wasn’t going to back down. He knew if he wanted this he would have to fight for it. He couldn’t back down. He needed to show them they had no right to chose his life for him.

“Oh for goodness sake child!” Tommy exclaimed, “Look at your life! You're in high school! You play lacrosse instead of focusing on your grades. Your parents aren’t the richest of them all. You have a blood youtube channel! You are in no position to raise a child. You just can’t. Boys like you always think they can do it and then they just run off leaving the girl and the child. I won't let that happen. I can’t afford a child like you to ruin my life. I can-” “Dad just shut up!” Y/n screamed back. “If Chris can’t see me I'm not going home with you. This is his child too, you can’t just take that away from, and for once in your life can you just stop about your stupid reputation and think about what you are doing.”

“What do you mean you're not coming home?” Lilly questioned, ignoring everything else her daughter had told her.

“I mean i’m not coming home.”

“Y/n if you do this we are cutting all ties with you. We are cutting you off both financially and emotionally and you are getting rid of that child's only stable grandparents. Do you really want to do that?”

If that's what it takes for Chris to stay in this child's life then so be it.”

PRESENT DAY

The next morning Adira woke up with the worst headache she had ever had. Stumbling downstairs she was met with Nick and Matt arguing over what the correct way to make frnch toast was. 

“Nick, you're such an idiot, it's painful. You can’t put nutmeg in french toast!”

“Just because you can’t cook doesn't mean I'm an idiot Bernard!” “Damn Uncle Matt, you can’t let that one slide!” Adira said, making the pair jump and turn around.

“Hey Bambi, how are you feeling?” Nick asked, walking up to her and pulling her into a hug.

“Bad, everythings a little…loud right now. Where's dad?”

“In the garden, i think you should go see him” Matt chimed in, pointing towards the back door where she could see her dad playing with Tessa, their dog. 

She slowly made her way out the house and into the garden preparing for a lecture from her dad, but when Chris saw her he simply smiled and tapped the spot of grass that was next to him, indicating that she should sit with him.

As she did so she quickly said, “I’m sorry dad, I really don’t know what happened last night.” She said looking down.

“It’s okay Adi, I know, it's okay.” He said ruffling her curls a bit  before he went back to stroking Tessa. “I do need to talk to you though.” He said looking down a bit caused Adira’s heart to drop a little.

“I think I'm going to go and see your mom. I know she’s probably confused but I just think I have to do this. For me, for you and for her. We can’t avoid this forever Adi. I just… I have to do it. I have to overcome whatever fear this is. You take your time okay. Let me know when you’re ready to see her and I'll take you,I just…I can't wait any longer.” Chris said quietly. He expected Adira to cry, maybe get mad or just walk away from him all together but instead she gently brought her dad into a hug.

“It’s okay dad, I get it. Do what you think is right.”

Chris just broke down at that. She understood. She understood.

“I love you Bambi. More than anything in the whole world, and im so proud that your my daughter.” Chris whispered as some tears dropped.

“I love you too dad. So much.”

rapunzel likes all candy, she will eat anything and everything, but she secretly likes the fruity candies more than like chocolate ans what not, but shhhh everything is still apatizeing to her(except lemon stuff, like dont give her a lemon head man). eugene likes chocolate and so does cass, i think ever since i got introduced to cass i js thought she liked chocolate, specifically dark chocolate js bcus shes not much of a sweets person yk?(she usually takes the dark chocolate hersheys & dark chocolate milkyways if no one wants them) but eugene likes all chocolates, milky ways? yes. snickers? yes. heck even an almond joy he'll eat.

lance is like raps, he'll eat whatever(usually he just eats what the girls dont want LMAO) but smth about me makes me think his fav is jelly beans... angry and catalina are both similar, but i think catalina doesnt like nuts in her candy(i dont either, i know im insane u can hate me already), but kiera probably likes snickers, though i think she likes baby ruths more. catalina is a big fan of reeses tho, like yes peanut butter & chocolate yum yum yum.

So I’m definitely the wrong person to ask this actually. I’m not really a big fan of candy tbh. I like it sometimes, but I usually prefer savory snacks. Honestly what you said is pretty much canon to me. I love these.

But I’ll try my best.

Punzie Wunzie- Like you said, prefers fruity candies to chocolate. Probably likes skittles and Starbursts, stuff like that. I feel like she’d like gummies. Esp the orange ones with sugar on them.

Gene- Chocolate all the way. And not the cheap crap, the really fancy stuff, like truffles.

Lance- Same as Eugene but I think he likes Hershey chocolate and generally just candy bars. Probably likes sour and spicy candies as well. And yes absolutely he loves jelly beans. Same with Cat and Varian.

Var Bear- I think he’ll eat anything tbh but he canonically likes chocolate, so he steals Eugene’s truffles and Lance’s candy bars. And I can see him liking hard candies and suckers, because you can eat them while working.

Cassie Wassie- Again like you said, dark chocolate. She doesn’t strike me as much of a candy person. I can see her liking candy with nuts (despite being a lesbian)

Thing 1 & The Other 1- I feel like Cat prefers savory foods because wolf hehe. So yes peanut butter candies all the way. Same with Kiera, idk she just doesn’t strike me as that much of a candy person either so I think she’d eat ab anything as well. Like they like candy well enough they just don’t really have favorites. Maybe they both like sour/spicy candy.

everyone else- Quirin and Arianna like those old person candies that just materialize in your house when you turn 60. Adira also prefers fancy chocolates. Frederic, I don’t know let’s say circus peanuts. Hector doesn’t care why are you asking him this. Edmund hasn’t had candy in years, honestly he’d be happy just eating a bag of straight sugar.

My favorite is probably milky ways. Because they’re good and I gotta stick with my astronomy aesthetic I’ve got going on. Also Skittles slap.

Introducing Adira

I tried really hard to mimic the art style for Touchstarved so I could finally use these templates for my character, and I'm really proud of myself!! Her designated background is The Unnamed

Adira was left abandoned on the doorsteps of a remote temple as a baby, upon which the clergy found and took her in. They were perplexed of the appearance of her arms until they discovered her curse and the nature of it. Instead of being scared, they instead saw her as a gift from the heavens here to bestow enlightenment, so they gave her the name Zaneta di Lucia and raised her as their sacred oracle. While living her life as Zaneta, she lived her life within the walls of her temple as she wasn't permitted to leave. Her only connection to the outside world was on one special day where the temple hosted an annual ceremony in her honor that they dubbed The Rite of Illumination. During the Rite, outsiders were permitted to come in for a chance to be the lucky one bestowed with her enlightenment. Every year, the clergy would pick someone to meet with her in private, upon which she'd touch their head. She was always taken out of the room quickly after, never being allowed to see what her touch actually does to a person.

One the year of her 24th birthday, two mages arrived at the temple after hearing rumors of her powers, and they could sense the malevolent energy of her curse from a mile away. The two would proceed to get her alone at some point during the festivities to confront her on the matter, only to realize she is oblivious to what her curse does. They create a commotion which summons the guards, and in the ensuring scuffle, one of the mages touches her hand, and she finally gets to witness the madness her touch inflicts in people first hand as he then attempts to kill her. The second mage saves her and promptly gets arrested, and the ceremony is canceled as she is too shaken up to continue.

Shaken up, she would decide to meet with the mage now imprisoned beneath the temple in secret seeking answers to her questions. He would help her the best he could, pointing her in the direction of the Senobium located in Eridia.

The two would orchestrate their escape together, and he would help her forge her new identiy as Adira to escape the eye of the temple. They would travel together, only for the mage to lose his life in the soulless attack just before entering Eridia...

Adira's flower is the Hellebore, which in the research I did, can mean;

Curiosity

Serenity

Tranquility

Peace

But, from what I also found, in Greek Mythology, hellebore could cure madness, which I found very interesting in relation to the curse that the MC is afflicted with. But, in that same vein, apparently the Victorians believed that hellebore caused delirium, and as a result, the hellebore flower can also mean;

Anxiety

Scandal

Stress

So I picked from both for which traits felt the most fitting for her! I'd really like to make OC's for The Hound and The Alchemist backgrounds in the future

Babylon 5 S03E20 And the Rock Cried Out, No Hiding Place previous episode - table of contents

It's kinda wild how much b5 is exactly to my tastes. Take this (and many other!) episode titles for example. Pretentious? Maybe. Poetic? Certainly. Full of allusion? Definitely. Makes me get shivers? Absolutely.  They even give me things to complain about. I'm well settled into complaining loudly about Londo bullshit.

Last episode's beverage (for data point purposes) was straight tequila with pepsi chaser. The hangover was vile and I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't sleep for three hours. Today's beverage - Bitterroot Brewing Co "Dirt Church" ipa. It's alright for an IPA.

Yeah!! It's another Susan Ivanova personal log episode. The telepaths they've recruited are being dispersed. Sheridan is tired, and Franklin is still pacing the halls. 

All the telepaths are being accompanied by a single Narn bodyguard. Fingers crossed for some of those bodyguards to start developing some telepathy of their own after spending a long time in close quarters with a telepath!!

Londo thinks it's time to "take care of" G'Kar?? FUCK OFF.  He wants G'Kar tricked back to Narn and executed. Thanks to the previous flashbacks, I am well aware that this plot won't play out with G'Kar's actual death. But I still want to strangle Londo. Can I isekai into B5 just long enough to goddamn murder that man?? 

Religious Theo of the religious group whatevever is being highlighted this episode. In theory I appreciate how diverse B5 is, religiously speaking. In practice....ehhh. At least when it comes to people quoting the KJV and referring to "the lord" every other sentence. 

Sheridan does look rough. And there's Delenn!!! Pretty in pink. 

"[Ivanova] said you were carrying on cranky. I looked up cranky, it said grouchy. I looked up grouchy, it said crochetly. No wonder you have such an eccentric culture. None of your words have their own meaning!" 

LOL!! Delenn is so cute. Also, very seriously, I apologize to every person who needs to learn English as an adult. It's a mess. 

Once I saw a gif of Delenn propping herself up on a elbow in bed with Sheridan and I have been FERAL to see that scene ever since. Maybe today will be the episode? Delenn climbs in bed with Sheridan to make him sleep??

Na'Toth might be alive. Or her name might simply be a trap for G'Kar. I don't think Londo's plan is going to work out. If he didn't go back to Narn for literally every other Narnuan, I'm not sure he'd go back for his aide who is probably dead. Also I 100% have more faith in Vir than this. Idk where he got them, but he has a surprisingly well-developed set of morals and empathy. 

Vir: "I won't. I won't go. I won't do it."

VIR BABY. Just say you'll do it, then go and collude and G'Kar. Londo is unhinged, threatening to have Vir's family stripped naked and whipped through the streets of Centaur's capital. What a fuck. He ought to be directing his energies towards getting back Lord Whatshisface who killed Adira on behalf of the Shadows. Refa. The show reminds me in a timely manner. 

Speaking of Refa, he's giving very desperate vibes. Trying too hard to suck up, and that puts blood in the water for the sharks to scent!!

Well. Hopefully even if Vir gives into Londo's threat and tries to trick G'Kar, his obvious nerves give away that something's wrong. 

Back to Londo and the Centauri court shenanigans. Londo is, undeniably, good at putting on the type of political front that works well on Centaur. 

Susan's blowout is so good every day I have to assume it's part of the high-tech auto-dryer when you step out of the shower...or something. Because there's no way that SUSAN IVANOVA is spending twenty minutes every day achieving the most ideal blowout that has ever been hair-dried into existence. 

OK I like the religious cabal a bit better now that I know they're smuggling up-to-date information about Earth politics into Bably 5. 

GODDANG IT. G'Kar is trying to sneak back onto Narn. Well. At least I know he lives to die another day. 

Vir, I am disappointed in. 

Centaur attack on Vir!! He lives to become Emperor another day as well. Stakes drop considerably when you know certain characters' ultimate fates. 

You know who I'd love to see again? AUNT PROPHETESS! Majel!! 

Lord Refa's eyebrows deserve their own acting credit.

Poor Vir. If only he had been able to keep his position on Minbar. He looked less stressed-out when he was spending most of his time surrounded by a tranquil environment. 

The Baptist pastor is hanging out with Sheridan, who is struggling to relax enough to fall asleep while also doing paperwork. Maybe. don't do paperwork while getting ready for bed. Which the pastor is also bringing up, more delicately than I would.

G'Kar made it to Narn. There's climate change from the orbital bombardment. Constant wind, particulate coming down from the upper atmosphere, poor air quality. And I doubt they had recovered from the previous Centauri occupation, and possibly not even the Shadows' occupation before that! 

Emperor Cartagia is going to be traveling to B5: that seems like a significant security risk! Maybe he'll get nerfed and we'll see the glorious ascension on Emperor Londo. 

Refa's plot is to capture G'Kar instead of letting Londo do it. Fingers crossed for neither of them getting that glory. 

Delenn says there's no pattern to the Shadows' attacks. The lack of pattern is probably the point - all over the place and unpredictable so the united forces are spread as thin and widely as possible. And the tactical data sorta supports that! They haven't attacked anything in the center of the sector, so refugees are going there. And Sheridan is picking this up now, too. They could nail all the refugees at once. 

"I think this is as much about terror as it is about territory." 

Yeah. 

Hm, Delenn is horrified by Sheridan saying he needs to think like them to beat them. Unless she has a really compelling argument against it, I'm going to have to disagree. How can you counter a tactic unless you understand it? 

Londo just knocked out a Centauri guard with a punch to rescue Vir. He gets no points from me, because he put Vir in that position. 

Unfortunately G'Kar won't get to kill Londo for quite a few years, but maybe he and the resistance will get to kill Refa and his goon squad instead. 

Damn it, Londo was two steps ahead of Refa this whole time. f.ucking annoying. Well. all Centauri warmongering genocidal politics are annoying. Refa being personally in charge of the bombardment of Narn is backfiring on his right now. 

Oh so this means that Vir was an unwitting stooge in the plot all along, and that's extra scummy, considering it resulted in Vir being mindraped and made to believe he'd just given up his mentor and employer. Very very cutthroat politics. No wonder Londo didn't name the embarassment he was planning to remove on behalf of the emperor to prove House Mollari's value. 

Baptist Pastor brought a gospel singer along with him, lol. That's very on brand. And super fucking amusing juxtaposition between her music and Refa being pursued and killed. "There's no hiding place down here." Refa being beaten to death. 

Buuuut as much as I dislike Londo, I am a fan of the person responsible for untold suffering and death getting a tiny fraction of that delivered back to them. So...annoyingly... *sigh* go Londo...

It's so fucking funny that Londo had the ability to slip refa the other half of the two-part poison all along but instead he had him beaten to death for political purposes. 

Vir is angry, but probably not enough to make him break from Londo entirely. 

Delenn has a surprise for Sheridan - "the White Star was never intended to be one of a kind, only the first..." and now there's a whole fleet. 

Hm. As far as first kisses on screen go, that one was pretty dated. I'm happy for them, but the "smear your face against the other person's face" is a style I'm glad has mostly gone away. It doesn't look very pleasant, hahah.

Sorry for being vague, I meant more of the character arcs part but I'd love to hear your thoughts on all of the bullet points you listed below.

This can't happen in real life: I feel this is pretty self-explanatory. The magic. All of the magic. Completely unrealistic for the world we live in. But also, the fact that it's not even well-defined within the world is frustrating as hell. It feels so much like there aren't really rules to any of it. The Sundrop and Moonstone can do whatever's convenient for the plot (or visuals).

That's not how science works: You can't just create a new element, sorry Varian. Throwing sand into a centrifuge will make glass. Cassandrium is glass. Fun times! I will accept that he mixes chemicals with different results and finds new compounds, but not actual, literal elements.

As for the bearcats/binturongs, that's not what those critters are like at all. The ones in the series are far too large and vicious.

They're just adorable, playful, arboreal babies.

And the Dark Castle? Like... the magma flow is so close to the foundation of the castle that like... I can't. That place would be sweltering, if not outright falling apart. (Also the group wouldn't have been able to travel casually that close to and over the flow, but all cartoons are guilty of that.) But the good news is that, if the Dark Kingdom is volcanic, once the black rocks are gone and the Brotherhood goes back to rebuild, it should have such fertile ground that life there will spring back in no time!

Adira's story arc makes no sense: It's no secret that Adira was inconsistent because they didn't know what to do with her, so they created a really cool character, then barely used her. But at her introduction, she tells us that she went off to find the Sundrop in order to bring it back to the Dark Kingdom and neutralize the Moonstone. Then, after Cassandra stole the Moonstone and took off, Adira said her path lied elsewhere (as in, not hanging out with Rapunzel and co). It seemed obvious to me that she was going to track Cassandra, keep an eye on the Moonstone, be able to give more intel to Rapunzel when their paths crossed again. But nope! She just... goes off to meditate or whatever, until the Mind Trap is activated.

The threads that seem set up to go a certain way never go that way: Sugracha got sucked into the same dimension where Zhan Tiri was being kept. So, it seemed, did Tromus. But, when the side cast gets sucked into the portal and put there, too, it's just weirdness. No sign of the demons they could and should have had to fight. They decided to just lock those characters out of the way instead of giving them something genuinely important to do.

Also, I've made posts about it before, but it really, really seemed like Tromus was being set up for another attack. Several of the side stories in season three had ties back to him and the House of Yesterday's Tomorrow. But it all went nowhere.

Can I hear about Adira? 👀 who is she?

SO since it's past midnight here, I'll give you the brief version, and you can ask for details if you want. xD

So there's a book I read in late 2016 that I looked at and went 'I love the concept but it seems unrealistic'. That book was 'In Search of Life', by Anna Tikvah. With the hubris of a teenager I decided I could do better. Anyway, to cut a very long story short, I wrote multiple drafts of this thing, and each draft it's got bigger...

It's a series, but the first book or so (it's shaping up to be Big unless I cut multiple side plots or figure out a way to make them their own stories... I've certainly thought about either excising them, or actually trying to split the first book, but that's a decision for later me) is about my girl Adira, who - being extremely bright and also a nepo baby* - is in an accelerated program for school that essentially gives her free rein to read lots and lots of books that are prohibited to the general public, but which also comes with a side of brainwashing (regular psychologist sessions that she doesn't realise until during the book are basically ways to indoctrinate the children).

During this time, she stumbles on a certain Book that is so suppressed as to be not recognised by the archivists until it gets higher up the chain. It's not supposed to be there. But she reads it, and is deeply confused. Things happen, she's introduced to a Bible believer who helps her to understand what she's reading, and there's a whole thing about psychology and learning truth and hard decisions and how to make trade offs that involve others. In the mean time she is also making various friends, there's a whole thing with her parents' relationship (which ends up essentially breaking down when her father chooses to keep his job rather than protect his daughter), and it's way more complicated than that all, really. And about hiding things and when hiding may be right actually and might not be and my girl just Goes Through It rather. Oh, and secret or mistaken identities, too. And what identity really is, and what you tie to your identity. It's all those things. And mental health. And when the obvious answer isn't the right one. And what you can depend on.

Star Trek Parents Just Don’t Understand (Part 2)

Last week, you’ll remember we covered a whole lot of parents from the classic Star Trek series and just how much they tended to ruin their kids’ lives. Well, this week A Star to Steer Her By is finishing out the topic with parental units from currently running Trek series and the Kelvin movies. Expect this one to not be nearly as far reaching, partly because SPOILERS WILL ABOUND below the cut and partly because we’ve not covered much of this on the podcast yet, so frankly I don’t remember a good deal of it.

But some of our major players have or are noteworthy parents to talk about in this period of wide-screen Trek (seriously, everything looks like a movie now and it’s impacting my screengrab game). Give your parents a hug for us as you see them listed below and also in probably the most spoilery episode of the podcast we’ve ever recorded (discussion starts at 59:37). They only raised you from tadpoles.

(Again, some mega spoilers for Star Trek 2009, Discovery, Lower Decks, Prodigy, Strange New Worlds, and especially [seriously!] Picard are below.)

Kelvin George Kirk

George Kirk was a parent to literally newborn James for all of thirty seconds before saving his life, Winona’s life, and the lives of the crewmembers of the USS Kelvin. While we have no idea if he’d have been any good at raising the youngster had he lived (apparently so since this alternate Kirk ended up being quite the ruffian compared to that walking stack of books from The Original Series), we know what he valued by his actions, his sacrifice, and his refusal to name him Tiberius.

Kelvin Sarek

In pretty much all timelines, Sarek is a bit of a hypocrite when it comes to raising a half-Vulcan, half-human son like Spock. Why he can’t get it through that Vulcan bowlcut of his that having a child with a human will dilute that cherished green blood of theirs is absolutely beyond me. I thought you hobgoblins were supposed to be logical, after all. Maybe if Amanda hadn’t blown up, things would have gone better for Quinto-Spock.

Discovery Sarek

Speaking of Sarek, in Discovery we actually see that he very much seems to prefer raising his ward Michael Burnham to raising either of his natural sons. Go figure. Apparently all his progenies had to do was follow in his footsteps, join the Vulcan Academy, and literally have a chunk of his katra from a past mindmerge-thing for daddy to love them.

Gabrielle Burnham

Michael’s relationship with her birth parents is something much more complicated. This is Discovery, after all; “It’s complicated” is the subtitle of the series! When we learn that Gabrielle is still alive, having saved Michael by becoming the Red Angel, it’s a bittersweet reunion that can only be made stranger by their second reunion in the 32nd century when momma has become a space nun of some kind. As if Michael didn’t have enough of this Vulcan stuff growing up!

Voq and L’Rell

On the subject of space nuns, we learn that Voq and L’Rell’s child Tenavik got to be raised by some time monks in the Boreth Monastery. Which, frankly, is probably the best that kid could ask for! The combative Klingon Empire was no place to raise a baby, and good on his parents for finding a child-rearing solution that, at the very least, kept him alive. Ya know, after just a little bit of faking his death. Q'apla, I guess!

Stamets and Culber

What is sweeter and purer than two gay space dads mentoring a nonbinary sorta-Trill sorta-not adolescent? I didn’t realize that Adira is supposed to be 16 when we meet them (probably because the actor was like 23), but regardless of age, they are struggling with their identity in enough ways to make a Vulcan weep, and having the support of a nurturing queer family is just what they need.

Ephaim

An easy example of a good parent from the Discovery era comes in one of the Short Treks, “Ephaim and DOT.” Sure, she’s a tardigrade and mostly just following that biological impulse to keep one’s seed alive, but she does better than a lot of other Trek parents. Go, tardigrades, go!

Raffi Musiker

Moving on to Star Trek: Picard, we see another negligent parent in the conspiracy theory–obsessed Raffi Musiker. She might rival Worf as a parent whose absence has screwed up their kid the most, as we see that Gabriel is downright hostile to her when she tries to reconnect. And then in season 3, she yet again chooses Starfleet over her family. Perhaps we’re lucky we haven’t seen Alexander in Picard, since he and Gabriel could have some stories to tell.

Troi and Riker

Say what you will about the Troi-Riker relationship, but they seem to be doing pretty okay raising their daughter Kestra. She’s a nifty kid with her head on straight, so they must be doing something right. Also, it’s very clear throughout their appearances in Picard that these parents did everything they could to save their son Thaddeus from his mendaxic neurosclerosis, and his loss affected them in the way only losing a beloved child could.

Maurice and Yvette Picard

We were teased a bit in TNG with just enough information about Jean-Luc’s upbringing to let us know his relationship with his father was strained and that with his mother was loving, but then the second season of Picard had to go spelling things out for us in ways we didn’t really need. Maurice becomes that much more terrible because he evidently did nothing when Yvette was going down a dark path. And Yvette… what the hell were the writers trying to say about Yvette? Freakin’ yikes. 

Adam Soong

Also in season two of Picard, we get YET ANOTHER Soong ancestor for Brent Spiner to play, ya know, for reasons. Evidently all the Soongs except Data (see last week’s inclusion!) are just terrible parents because they’re effectively just trying to prolong their own legacy instead of actually caring for the needs and wants of the child. Kore, in this case, lives a life so sheltered she can’t even go outside without bursting into flames. Much like that whole damn season…

Teresa Ramirez

We do, however, get one solid parent in season two of Picard, and that’s Teresa Ramirez, the divorced mother who Rios is totally thirsty for. Actually, we don’t see a lot of children of divorce in Star Trek, do we? As we established last week, it’s far more likely to have one parent get killed off than it is to have people amicably separate because, of course, that makes for more drama. There’s Torres’s parents, and Rom and Prinadora but that’s just their Ferengi contract, and that might just be about it? Anyway, Teresa’s cool.

Jean-Luc Picard and Bev Crusher

Season three, however, is just a straight up family reunion show with lots more literal family members that get introduced to boot! Somewhere after Nemesis, evidently Bev and JL got down to clown and then Bev ran away and hid the pregnancy from him for however many years this boy is old. Sure, we all agree Picard would make a father that might rival Worf’s awkward sense of child neglect, but is Bev any better never telling him? Discuss amongst yourselves.

Geordi La Forge

Geordi’s been busy too, cranking out at least two daughters. Like Sarek’s relationship with his various kids, it seems much easier for Geordi to play favorites. Alandra is the favored daughter because she followed in his footsteps and seems like she was generally passive, while Sidney is the black sheep of the family and La Forge has trouble connecting with her because she can’t just be controlled like certain holoprograms I could name.

Carol Freeman

Let’s get out of Picard and into some animated stuff. The relationship between Captain Freeman and her daughter Beckett Mariner is at the core of Lower Decks, so much so that it’s kept secret from the rest of the crew for the drama of it all. Most of the show treats their relationship like ones we’ve seen before in which the child lashes out because they don’t want to follow in their parent’s footsteps. There is love there, but their failure to communicate does dominate.

The Diviner

In our other animated Trek, The Diviner definitely falls into that category of just the worst kind of parent because he will sacrifice Gwyn a hundred times over to get his way. He never listens to what she wants, chooses the Protostar over her, and leaves her to nearly get killed on vine planet. All this and the only reason he created her in the first place was to continue his work. Rude, bro.

Joseph M’Benga

Finally, we have Dr. M’Benga in Strange New Worlds, whose dedication to caring for his sick daughter Rukiya is admirable and incredibly sweet. Every time he reads fairy tales to her in sickbay is a beautiful little scene, and the end of “The Elysian Kingdom” is a tear jerker that we were honestly surprised to get so early in the run of the show. I kinda hope we see more from Rukiya in future, but who knows what’s written in these fantastical pages?

thoughts about my oc/canon stuff under the cut.

so. aurellio and refa. aurellio was essentially born as a joke, saying "what if i made a centauri oc lmfao" and also, "what if, as a parallel to londo and adira, refa had his own dancer in a pre-canon timeline back home on centauri prime and they were both boys!" since yknow. refa is such an effective foil to londo i figured it would be a fun, kinda cute idea.

i also think it does narratively fit in well with b5. take londo, who isnt the best example but we see him commit all these horrible acts but we know about his love for adira, before we even see him start to reform or even start to really commit atrocities we know he has a heart. we find this out in the third episode. spectacularly done.

a better example of this would actually be bester, one of my other absolute favorite side villains. bester was never redeemed. bester, however, is given opportunities for the audience to see his heart. irt his family, his expectant lover, and his somewhat emotional reactions to the telepaths dying in season 5, though caused by him. we still hate him, he never gets redeemed, his love for the people in his life does still exist and doesnt excuse or justify his actions. it gives him a lot of depth that i also really enjoyed!

that is kind of what i'm trying to do with refa. aurellio is a late 20 something year old centauri who is majorly unaware of what refa is doing or does or will do in relation to his schemes to rise to power. i also think that in this pre-canon timeline (around 2253-2257) is when refa is doing little things to slowly climb to where we see him in the show. he always had a lot of power being the lord of his house so he didnt need to do much, but i think the ten or so years leading up to his appearance in the show was a slow, hands-off rise to power. so aurellio, who has no real relation to House Refa aside from being a patron, isnt involved or knowledgeable about house refa's politics.

i would get into the "refa is a good family man" headcanon i have but tldr: celes was his last wife because he chose her. he chose her because he genuinely loved her and he chose to have senna. his other wives and his other children operate moreso like londos wives and him did where there was no love and only obligation. so senna and celes get favored. senna cared enough about her father to throw rocks at londos head years later about it, so i think that they did have a good relationship. refa spoiled her, would do anything for her, which was strange for a noble centauri man to be so obsessed with his youngest daughter. maybe he knew she was always destined for greatness. weh. and well, when this baby is like "dad, i wanna be a ballerina" like most 3 year old girls want to be, he says "of course my love, let me find you the best teacher possible": enter aurellio. who he chooses. who senna also chooses.

so yknow. refa gets a boy toy as a treat. aurellio is almost a part of his family as a treat. they kinda sorta love each other, as a treat, and it also works with aurellio's unconventional relationships he has with his lesbian wife bestie and her twin, the actual love of his life. so like yay centauri polyamory.

i just feel like sometimes i have to justify doing what i'm doing with my oc/canon stuff bc 1. it's refa🤢 and 2. ive been in fandoms before that were hostile to me about liking villains And trying to expand on them and make them more than what the show gives us. im VERY satisfied with refa's character in the show. these headcanons arent filling a void that was missing because i dont think they needed to be expanded on in canon, i just like refa/the centauri/my centauri oc and expanding on centauri lore is fun. so 🤷‍♂️

Carn

Between Ghost hills and The Tor, lay Carn with a small castle and a small army of nine thousand men who would ride to the King’s defense straight for Kings landing, if the opportunity arises. Lord Firenze Odarys and his predecessors were known for being supporters of whoever sat the throne.

Many frowned upon the Lord’s views, some even titling him Lord no Backbone. Not to his face of course, for fear of retaliation.

Whilst many disliked Lord Firenze, those same people adored his children and his late wife, Lady Seraphis Hightower. They were blessed with a son and two beautiful daughters. Mars Odarys and his sisters Adira and Ophilia Odarys.

Mars Odarys, the eldest, never wanted to marry and wanted to take the white cloak and serve the king. He claimed he did not want to be burdened by a wife and children and lived for the fight.

Thankfully for Lord Firenze, his youngest Ophilia only dreamed of marriage and children running around giggling. She even confessed to her septa that she wanted to be in a constant state of pregnancy because she wanted babies. Pour foul, the septa mused in her head.

And then there was Adira.

She was special and everyone knew she was the favorite child, even if lord Firenze does not wish to comment on that.

From her first breath, during a solar eclipse, Adira was special, healing her mother’s tears miraculously. Her parents could not explain what had happened. Seraphis only knew that she was in immense pain at first and close to dying then she couldn’t feel the pain and only heard her daughter’s cries.

Maesters, septas, priests, red priestesses, all gathered to find out what was wrong with the babe, but none could come to a conclusion.

And so, the child grew and blossomed into a young girl who wanted nothing to do with marriage or war. She wanted to be a healer.

That only strengthened when the lady of House Odarys, passed.

‘Maldición de sangre.’

The dornish priest said. A blood curse.

Everyone tried to understand who would curse her own father, but answers were found.

And so, Adira determined to heal her father, placed her hand near his heart and started to heal him. Unfortunately, she did not tell anyone what she was doing, and her mother walked into the room.

The curse attached itself to Lady Seraphis killing her without pity. Adira tried to save her mother, but the girl of ten and four did not have a grasp on her powers yet and failed.

Everyday Adira thinks back to this moment and every day she sheds a tear for her mother. The woman who loved making flower crowns even for her son and husband.

To her memory Adira and Ophilia always kept their hair down and would wear flower crowns.

Adira was walking in the gardens and as always, she was thinking of her mother, looking at the flowers. She was rudely shaken out of her reverie when heavy footsteps could be heard behind her.

Turning around she sees her older brother walking towards her, his shoulders looking heavy. She could see that he was carrying something and came straight to her during his combat training.

He stops in front of her and lets out a puff.

“You are lucky I came all this way. Exel even had a fit over it and I was in the middle of winning, but the raven would not leave me alone.” Mars says a little bit out of breath.

“What are you on about?” Adira replies smiling connivingly.

“A raven came for you.”

“Another Lord asking for my hand? Send it back.” Adira replies coldly.

“Surprisingly not. It is from a Dothraki herd. Who knew these savages could write…” Adira was also baffled, not about them being able to write but why would Dothrakis want to address her?

“What does it say?” She rapidly says.

“I thought you were clever… can’t read Dothraki can you?” Mars says smirking mischievously.

“Obviously not! Father did not wish me to learn it. Now, can you translate it please?” Adira did not find her brother’s words amusing.

Mars giggled slightly but started to read the letter not wanting to antagonize his sister more.

“It says something about their Khal. Their king.” He begins.

“I know what Khal means! I am not stupid. “Adira replies offended.

“Gods, I feel like you are going to flower soon... so angry...” Mars mumbles under his breath. Adira slaps him on the arm and so Mars continues reading and translating.

“This is a direct line from the letter. ‘a witch, a witch has cursed the Khal, the Khaleesi is gone. We cannot find her. She left the stones. Save our Khal’” Mars finishes the letter and simply discards it to the left of him.

Adira quickly bends down and grabs the letter before the wind blows it away…

“A curse?”

“You heard what I said” Mars says dismissively.

“Who was the Khaleesi?” Adira replies frowning.

“You do not know? “Mars exclaims, surprised. Adira shakes her head. She was trying to stay away from any marriage talk. Hers or others.

“Daenerys Targaryen. The mad king’s daughter. She and her brother apparently went into hiding in Essos. Robert Baratheon and his posse are looking high and low for them. Even sending assassins after them. One of those assassins probably gut her…” Mars was rambling now.

“Is the raven still here?” Adira cuts him off.

“Yes! Did you not here me say the raven would not-” Adira cut him off.

“I will go and heal the Khal. Would you send them a raven and tell them that?”

“What? Are you out of your mind? Father will never let you go heal that brute. Whispers in the brothel say that they fuck their horse when their women cannot satisfy them anymore… and they kill every minute.” Mars says outrageously, almost whispering the last part.

Adira crunches her nose in slight disgust. She knew her brother frequented the brothels. She remembers finding him after a banquet with three of the pleasure girls naked. A sight she wished to forget.

Adira decides not to believe him. If the Dothrakis are civil enough to write to House Odarys then they do not sleep with their horses.

“Good thing you are not father, then. I will heal the Khal and father will agree with me.” She huffs and walks away towards the small castle mentally planning what she would bring to Essos.

3 characters that inspire you Molly Grue (The Last Unicorn) is my hero. Even though she followed her fantasies and they left her with nothing, she is willing to fight for what she believes in and selfishly help the main characters out of love for them. The world has shoved her aside and it hurts, and she's so ordinary compared to everyone around her. But her greatest power is love and compassion and selflessness. And by that, she enters into more meaningful adventures.

Ahsoka Tano (Star Wars). I grew up loving the Jedi, but none of them--even Master Yoda--were able to follow through on the real morality they claimed to follow. Ahsoka to me is the one true Jedi...even though she'd be the first to tell you she's not one.

Lady Brienne (Game of Thrones). Yes, yes, I have a huge crush on her, and she has a real fatal flaw with following her honor and all. I love everything about this!!! I totally agree that having Varian along the journey to the dark kingdom would’ve made so much sense and greatly enhanced the story as well as flesh out the characters more. He has a direct connection to the brotherhood and dark kingdom and has an important motivation to travel there to potentially find a way to free his father from the Amber.

When we found out that Quirin was once a member of the brotherhood, I really thought they were going to expand on that and forge a connection between Varian and the brotherhood/dark kingdom. I think it would be been cool if maybe Adira had kept tabs on Quirin and Varian over the years, maybe she tried to reconnect with her brother when Varian was a baby and Quirin told her to leave them alone. So she secretly watched over them whenever her travels took her near Corona.

The concept of Adira and Hector being mentor figures to Varian is soooo good, there’s so much potential there for character development. Plus your idea of Varian essentially being the connection between Adira and Hector works so well, they both relate to him in different ways and I would’ve adored seeing them start to repair their relationship through their mutual affection for Varian.

Seeing Hector slowly warm up to Varian would’ve been really nice to see, I love seeing normally intimidating characters begrudgingly show their softer side. I definitely think their relationship would be antagonistic to start with, Hector wouldn’t underestimate Varian as an opponent. I feel like that would slowly turn into a genuine appreciation for his inventiveness and creativity, especially considering his age. I wonder if Hector may see a bit of his younger self in Varian which might contribute to him eventually developing some affection for him.

Adira also definitely would’ve helped Varian to be more confident in himself and his skills so he can better help his friends. Having someone as impressive as her pay attention to him would probably make Varian over the moon happy lol Plus I feel like he’d constantly be peppering her with questions about his dads history with the brotherhood which she’d be more than happy to regale him with (she’d definitely throw in her own stories of badassery as well lol)

I also don’t get why the hell HOOKFOOT got to be part of the main cast when Varian had already been established as a fundamental character. I honestly doubt anyone was clamouring for more Hookfoot character development 🙄 just such a wasted opportunity to further develop a beloved character instead of shoehorning in a rando comic relief side character.

So theres rumours that Varian was supposed to be a bit more involved in s2 regarding the brotherhood before Chris got salty and removed it, and since you're THE brotherhood enjoyer, what are your thoughts? How do you think Varian could've played into the brotherhood lore? Also, thoughts on brotherhood Varian aus, if any? (since I know some arent the biggest fans of that au lol). Personally I think overall the brotherhood had TONS of potential, and as an avid varian fan (the kind chris would hate) I ponder what significance he could've had to the brotherhood.

I've also heard those rumors, and I believe that Varian would've been a much more effective and entertaining member of the Hairavan Squad than Hookfoot was. Varian's character has built-in connections to the Dark Kingdom, and his goal to rescue Quirin from the amber was the perfect motivation for him to join the quest for answers about the black rocks. His presence in S2 would've been the perfect tool to explore and engage with lore about the Brotherhood, Dark Kingdom, and the Moonstone. And having a whole season where he was forced to be around Rapunzel and co would've also provided a great opportunity to work through their interpersonal conflicts properly, instead of making him speedrun an unsatisfactory redemption arc in the beginning of S3 (while ignoring Rapunzel's poor choices that contributed to his suffering). Adira revealed that she knew who Varian was in canon, and I think it's safe to say she knew about him before witnessing Rapunzel harness the black rocks while fighting his automatons. Sadly we never got confirmation that she knew what happened to Quirin, or if she wanted to try to free him as well. (Personally, I think it would be completely in-character for her to be distressed about Quirin getting ambered, and planning to free him in some way after uniting the Celestial Drops.)

If Varian was traveling with the squad in S2, I can totally see him being a sort of connection point between Adira and the Coronan characters. Like, he'd be the only one she's willing to spend time talking with about the Dark Kingdom's history and culture and relationship with the Moonstone, and Varian would pass any info he thought was important on to the rest of the gang. Adira could also provide more humanizing details about Quirin via memories of their time serving in the Brotherhood together, and probably would've ended up mentioning Hector a lot sooner. Also seeing Varian and Adira bond over their creativity/inventiveness would've been so cool and fun and adorable! 🥰🥰🥰 (Maybe Adira would've been able to help Varian develop safety measures to prevent his experiments from ending in mass destruction in the future?)

I think Hector's reaction to Varian would be more complicated. On the one hand, he's a living reminder that Quirin left the Brotherhood and essentially abandoned Hector. He's also trying to get to the Moonstone, which makes him an enemy and a threat. (Plus his alchemy/inventions would make him a more formidable and unpredictable fighter, so Hector would probably focus on taking Varian and Adira down before attacking the rest of the group.) On the other hand, we know from canon that members of the Brotherhood have a supremely important place in Hector's heart, and Varian would still be a young teenager in S2. At the end of the day, I don't see Hector committing to killing Varian because he sees the kid as his brother's son above everything else - just like he sees Adira as his sister in spite of her treason and 25-year absence. But it would definitely take him some time to warm up to Varian and develop a relationship, especially if he chased after the Hairavan and continued trying to stop/kill them.

Giving Varian, Hector, and Adira the opportunity to bond during S2 would provide some really interesting opportunities to explore all three of their inner worlds/round out their character developments. Adira's influence could help Varian reconnect with the inventive and optimistic parts of himself - the side that wants to use his scientific talents to help everyone around him. Hector's influence could help Varian address and process the dark descent into madness that he suffered in S1, while also modeling forgiveness and commitment to doing what's right. And Varian could serve as a connection point between Hector and Adira, providing tangible common ground that they can use as a starting point to work through the rift in their own relationship.

As far as Brotherhood!Varian aus go, I think they're a ton of fun to play with! I'm not totally convinced that his canon self would be interested in becoming a soldier, but I definitely think he'd be motivated to find ways of preventing the amber and black rocks from victimizing anyone else like they did to his father and destroyed Old Corona. The two fanfics that do the best job at exploring Brotherhood!Varian (in my opinion) are the Blood Oaths Series by Amax76 (currently has 2 main fics and a couple related one-shots), and Chemiluminescence by @scottfreed. Losing My Religion by @oonajaeadira This series is, hands down, my favorite. For all the subjective reasons a person may connect with a story. I love Adira's take on the inner life of Din, and Little Bird feels like "me" in ways many "readers" don't (again that is one of the subjectives that no one can plan, it just happens or not) The things that hit with me personally aside,  the writing is gorgeous and expressive. The unfolding of the story is unhurried and exciting and the world building exquisite. It’s full of sincere love of the source material with deep dives into lore. It also is full of fluffy goodness and when it gets to sexy times, the writing is breathtakingly poetic, based in emotion. (great cameos from beloved characters too!)

Vencuyanir by @oloreaa

This is another story that takes its time, focusing on Elana (OC caretaker).  Following faithfully the episodes but inserting the Elena's story quite seamlessly, doing a great job at adding more dimension to characters we know, while keeping them in character. (Including Omera! who is wonderfully written and in her glory!) Excellent world building as well. 

The Stowaway by @sprout-fics

I am a fan of the slow burns I guess, another story that builds patiently, with 3 arcs. Beautifully written, excellent action sequences and fantastic world building like the other two.  Particular highlight, the Rishii children kidnapping arc! Activate Protective Din! 

The Caretaker Series by @firstofficerwiggles Wonderfully descriptive and great dynamics, tons of fluff, angst and yearning, and the Chapters on Angel One, is a highlight! Less of a slow burn, through probably only by comparison and it becomes explicit  at chapter 6, then the sexy times just keep coming... um... yeah, you know what I mean. 

Everything & More by @dincrypt​ Okay, so out of the gate, Sugar Daddy/Baby is not my thing. I’m personally uncomfortable with it. BUT here in the capable hands of Lynx, this fic goes at it in a way that is wonderful without being unrealistic. Acknowledging how the dynamic can be problematic and uncomfortable and then showing how it doesn't have to be. The writing is excellent. Shocker it’s slow burn despite of the stated dynamic, they are a couple of idiots who are truly growing all sorts of feelings and haven’t done a thing about it yet!

Honestly? I think what tangled failed to do was make sure characters had good chemistry as friends. Seriously Cass and Rapunzel where like crude oil and the ocean. One single match from destruction. Season one is bottom barrel because it goes out of it's way to excuse Frederick for his shit. Season two was actually really good because Rapunzel was still herself and was making tough choices left and right. Season 3? Ohhhh boy. Season 3 was a half good half bad because while I do applaud her trying to bring her friend back into the fold? Cassandra wasn't wrong when she said "this has to stop now. This thing where you THINK you've been my friend". Cuz as far as I could tell? They were never friends. Hell even when being a slow burn villain, Varian had better friend chemistry with Rapunzel. When the show expects me to swallow "Cass and I are besties.and sisters!" whole sale? I'm not buying it.

Oooooh boy! This ask is just dripping with potential rant power. Sorry in advance for how long this answer is destinied to be!

First things first. I absolutely agree with you on how badly TTS handles chemistry amongst the main characters. Cass gets the worst of it because she is shoehorned as Rapunzel’s BFF off screen and suddenly she has equal sway on Rapunzel as Eugene? Her character can’t even be allowed to breathe most of the time because the show is obsessed with sticking her next to Rapunzel to the point that she can’t grow any further away from her. At least other show original characters like Lance and Varian have an actual introduction and a place in the world outside of Rapunzel, but even then they suffer because Rapunzel is upfront and center and there is very little wiggle room for interactions that don’t have at least have some involvement with her. It’s here where our opinions differ however.

I would make the bold claim by sayin that S1 of TTS is by far and away the best out of the three. Yes it has the glaring flaw of bias for Frederic and against Varian that makes me question whether or not it should be considered “good” but it’s much better balanced than the other two seasons that follow it. In S1 we actually get character who aren’t Rapunzel more chances to shine without her stealing the spotlight away at the last moment. In S1 we actually have an actual conflict that drives the story forward and at least pretends to care about developing the characters. Even the obnoxious bias could have still worked out in the shows favor if they were ever properly addressed in story and not swept under the rug like they were in later seasons. Heck, I would go as far as to argue that the worst parts of S1 is the fact that S2 and S3 make it worse retroactively.

S2 in my opinion is the dullest of the three, by a wide margin. With them never addressing what the mains left behind in S1 as well as taking the threat of the rocks away WAY too early, the conflict is particularly nonexistent. Not only that, but it does what I think is the worst thing a show can do during a season long journey. They never actually develop the world outside of Corona. They established that there are 6 other kingdoms in the alliance with Corona, but the most we get of any of them is the one throwaway line about them being close to the mountains of Koto in Freebird. Other than that we overstay in three separate places that end up being worthless to the plot as a whole. After spending three episodes in Vardaros right out the bat, we never return or what’s become of them afterwards. Them mains stranded on the Island is pretty dull and is only memorable to me because they had the guts of mentioning Varian again and established that Rapunzel STILL has an unhealthily delusional bias for Frederic despite of everything. The House of Yesterday’s tomorrow is just an excuse of shoehorning a bunch of magical hijink cliches that aren’t done very interesting. Heck, despite them spending a whole season getting to the Dark Kingdom, they only spend an episode and a half there and only a single night in universe. The rest of S2 is just filler that don’t even develop the characters or tell any interesting stories. Like, an enchanted forest episode even though the mid season finale takes place in another enchanted forest? A repeat of the first part of Tangled the movie with Cass replacing Eugene? Whatever the heck “Curses” was supposed to accomplish? The only thing interesting that S2 introduces is the Brotherhood, and we all know how little they are used afterwards.

I would also like to point out that at the start of S2, the mains just…. Stop developing almost entirely? Cass and Eugene never have any meaningful moments together like they do in S1, and are reduced to just taking potshots at each other to remind us that they have some sort of relationship. Lance is reduced strictly to comedic relief and in my opinion is just there to give Eugene something to do when he is removed from the plot because once again, the show is obsessed with making Rapunzel and Cass’ friendship be a thing that only matters. Hookfoot is just there to give his stand up routine about how marriage is terrible in the first episode of the season and just to exist afterwards, yet he SOMEHOW gets actual episodes focused on him while Lance suffers. Even characters properly introduced this season are cursed to never flesh out because Adira keeps pulling a vanishing act for no established reason, Hector is only gets any lines in his debut episode and never given any real focus again, and Edmund gets the same treatment as the other dads (except maybe Captain) by getting his entire character reduced to one trope later on in S3. Speaking of…

S3…. Ooooh boy S3. It’s not as boring as S2 for me, but that’s only because it’s a media equivalent of a train wreck that I couldn’t look away from. It’s like they took the two major issues of the past two seasons (the clear bias and shallow filler) and mashed them together while trying to savage it by inserting what worked in S1, (actual conflict) but completely missed the point why it worked in the first place. All pretense of caring about any other character other than Rapunzel and Cass is gone in this season. Even episodes that focus on anyone outside of Rapunzel, ends up ending with Rapunzel saving the day because she is the only one allowed to be heroic anymore.

They try to make Cass’ villain arc as complex as Varian’s but for some reason they think her blaming a literal baby for being kidnapped is enough grounds to go on a murder streak without one episode of hesitation. Lance is just there for bottom barrel dumb humor, yet the show thinks he is responsible enough to raise two kids on his own. Varian falls into the pigeon hole of just being the “kid character that hangs with the grown up mains” trope that he managed to avoid in S1 while also being just a plot device to not only give the mains access to tech, but also get shoehorned into scenes to keep the audience somewhat invested. Eugene is literal retconned in universe to be just a bland supportive boyfriend. Rapunzel, my gosh Rapunzel…. She treated is so painfully “perfect” to the point that she is completely unrelated. I’m not calling her a Mary Sue because they only ACT like she is perfect. She is still a hugely flawed human being, but the other characters just applaud her because she is “the magical, wonderous sundrop” and very little else. Also yes, Rapunzel being obsessed over Cass while playing off all the horrible actions her BFF as her being lost is the most frustrating thing ever. It’s as if she became Frederic from S1 and abandoned everyone else well being in favor of one person who doesn’t even want her attention, only worse because it’s made into a good thing. Again, S1 is made retroactively worse because of the seasons that follow it.

There is much more things wrong with S3 than S2, but honestly I find myself changing my mind a lot whether which one is objectively worse. Like making a show boring is arguably the worst thing you can do, but the choices, morals, and all around writing of S3 is just bad. Then again the writing in S2 is honestly pretty on par with S3 at times, so again, it’s a toss up.
