It’s massively violating for both of them, and I wish we’d had more exploration of the aftermath.

However, OP is absolutely right with how wonderful it is that Tom respects her boundaries so completely.

By the point he’s openly into her and has repeatedly asked her out, but he immediately realised she’s not in her right mind and backs away. There would be so many writers who’d use it to get them together under the guise of ‘she was hiding her feelings all this time’, and I’m so glad Voyager didn’t.

The emphasis on consent with the way he keeps repeating that it’s not about how he feels, or how attracted to her he is, but that it’s about the fact that she has made it clear she’s not interested and ‘I have to respect that’ is not only really hot, but also a very important message.

Voyager has a lot of flaws, but I cannot overstate how important it was for me growing up to see a couple that I idolised on screen where the man was so completely respectful of her boundaries and emphasised the importance of her consenting.
